I can't sleep so I'm just laying here in the dark thinking about how at least 3 different sets of "older brother raised younger brother and so the older one is both brother and parental guardian" sets of fictional characters have given be brainrot at different periods in my life.

Jet had landed with a painful thud, hands raising to grasp at his ruined beak. Agony was burning from his mouth outwards, causing him to cry out as Storm dashed forth to try to punch Harmony straight out of the tower. However, as the kid moved to stop him- easily catching his would-be punch with one hand...he could only stare in mute shock. For that brief moment, he'd seen rage and grief in those eyes- unable to process alongside the power that coursed through them. Purple danced around the edges of the teen's frame, not quite catching his attention- but definitely catching Jet's as terror flooded his mind.

At least Harmony had been flung away from him- smashing into the metal of the nearest wall thanks to a mech's hit. He stared at where Harmony had been flung. There were very few who could survive crashing through metal, himself amongst them- but with her strength, there was no way---

The albatross' eyes dilated. Harmony was making her way out from the hole she'd formed in the metal, like a demon from the darkest depths. Seeing the afterimage of Harmony suddenly rushing across the floor- hearing the robot behind him getting crushed into flattened scrap- it sent a shiver down his spine.

"BOSS-!!!" Storm fled, picking up Jet and Wave, not daring a look back. Panic had gripped the trio's mind. Storm's hand had begun to pulse from the pain of Harmony catching his hit, but he didn't dare utter a word outside of his frenzied cries. The Rogues' boards were still malfunctioning, so it was up to Storm to try his best to run away with his siblings- all while squawking in terror.

"Yeah, I'm-- okay. Are you?" Inari hadn't been fast enough- not by a long shot. Despite his ability to keep a (decent) pace when Bless was going slow enough, she hadn't been able to get Harmony out of the way of Storm's attack... Though, it would seem there hadn't been a need to. The teen had caught his fist- and then gotten flung straight through the factory wall. The sparks that exploded and whizzed from the hole foretold that she'd busted through several walls in a row- several layers of metallic armor that should have broken bones...but she was fine.

He took it in stride to the best of his ability- though she was tempted to ask Harmony just how tough the fluffhog actually was. A question best suited for other times- even if his mind locked on it, trying to ignore the thought that plagued the minds of the team. He shook himself, readying for a fight as his nanobots slowly began to whir back to life.

"Looks like they're waking up..." Focus on that..focus on the robots before her, and not the bloodied body nearby. He could see Volt out of the corner of her eye- and that was all the mobian needed as reassurance. All she could accept for now, as she launched with Harmony back into the thick of the fight- intent on defeating the robots before they could get near the trio nearby. "Time for some fun!" Though Inari's voice was anything but cheery.

Bless' power was going haywire. Electricity splashed through the plants, burning some from the inside out- while those that had naturally grown on Chemical Island only grew stronger, purple electricity dancing up and down the stalks. Plants shot through some of the robots, firing higher into the air- several moved to encompass Volt and Node, protecting them from any blast that may come their way. Only when the power began to flicker did Bless finally return to a hint of his senses- dashing towards the downed body, towards his partner that had temporarily caused a power outage through the entire tower.

In other circumstances, he might have laughed.- In other circumstances. But now? Now, he only dashed closer- spinning once he was close enough. If nothing else, he was going to keep the two safe- he just-- they couldn't be dead. They WEREN'T. That thought blazed across him, stubborn to what he'd seen- refusing to consider...even as the very concept of what he denied had him fighting harder, teeth and nails slashing through anything that dared come anywhere close.

He couldn't heal, like Volt...but he could defend.

Node's warning, their scared voice...those hazel eyes flickering, the soft assurance that he'd keep them safe...those memories blazed through his head like a wildfire, tears burning down his face.

"STAY BACK!!!" His grief was his battery, even as the glow around his body began to flicker and falter.

They were barely there. The glow of that ring in their chest was dim, but still flickering- beating in time to their heart. Node's body twitched as Volt's energy slowly began to burn through their veins. A weak wheeze escaped them, a hand twitching. Fire-- so much burning...their chest was killing them...but as the moments ticked by, the pain grew lesser as Node dragged their way back to consciousness.

Hazel eyes managed to open, dulled from the pain that suffused their nerves. As they realized what was happening- as their eyes found the hand pressed against their ruined tank top, feeling as bones tried to knit together- they managed to raise their own. Their scarred left hand rested atop Volt's arm, eyes drifting.

"....V-...olt...?" The pain in their chest was exquisite- radiating outwards from their lungs, each breath like acid. The dull throb of a burn, which would probably turn into a raging inferno across their nerves, alerted them to the smoky mess that was their side. "....Volt...." It was hard to focus- but they were still making their way back. "...what..." What happened. They weren't sure what was going on- but it didn't take a genius to know something had gone down. The flickering lights, the towering plant life, the tears and fear in their partner's expression. The raging screams of Bless, finally stilling- blue fur parting the plant life around the two as the werehog all but leapt inside.

Their tail curled almost protectively around them, the tip brushing against Volt's leg.- An attempt to calm the hybrid down, though the movement was stuttered at best.

"How're they d-..." He went quiet upon seeing those familiar orbs, once more opened- alive.

Jet had only gotten a sliver of the power behind the teen. The one who, if she had really wanted, could have done far worse to his skull. But a shattered beak with a missing chunk would be a good reminder of who he was messing with. Emerald eyes remained narrow as Jet went flying, Chip’s bracelet pulsing quickly on her wrist as something flashed just behind her eyes.

Something Storm would get to see clearly when she easily caught his fist and held it firmly within her grasp. Those haunting sclera tinted the corners of her eyes while the tears continued to fall. His blow had done nothing but earn the teen’s attention as she held his fist in place, glowing purple tendrils rising from her back in a position to strike right then and there.

If only she hadn’t been hyper-focused on the Albatross, she might have seen the mech that had managed to reboot its system in time to hit her. The force sent Harmony flying through a wall, the metal crumpling like paper from the force in which she hit.

The echoing thud of her body damaging metal paneling caught her father’s attention briefly. But, be it his subconscious thought or just knowing his daughter, his focus remained on Node’s still form. The wall creaked and groaned, echoing a growl that could have been mistaken for an eldritch horror. All before Harmony launched back out on her feet and rolled her shoulders.

“That the best ya got?” With a crack of her neck and one more shoulder roll, an afterimage was all that robot would see before it was speared in the torso and slammed into the floor. Interlocked hands were raised and brought down on the mech’s head, embedding what was left into the metal under them.

It was at that point that she noticed Inari joining her. “Ya alright?”

Despite having punched Jet in the face and knocked through a wall (or several), Harmony was perfectly fine physically.

Mentally, she was in the same boat as her father, worried for Node. But she’d focus on the robots and helping Inari so that Volt could focus on what he needed to once he got close.

His body acted on instinct alone to dodge and avoid the obstacles in his way. The growing plant life offered openings for him to reach their partner and drop to his knees beside their blood-riddled body.

“Node… please… n-not again…” Images of long ago, long suppressed, flared to life.

The golden curls framed that bright white smile. Beige fur stepped into his line of sight, obscuring the massive form of Omega looming over him.

The gunshots, the blood…

“No. Not again… I.. can't... We won’t lose you.” Violet eyes, bloodshot and brimming with more shedding tears focused on their partner’s chest. Organic fingers spread as electricity stuttered to life from his palm. He had to focus, draw from the remaining energy he had left after his surge, praying it was enough.

“Please… Node…. Come on…”

Between the Sea and the Sky!

Hi everybody! Meet the TWO new guys I made between last night and today! Their names are Tarmac (an Aeromorph dog) and Soda (a pooltoy fox), and they've filled a desire for these two specific kinds of OCs I've had in mind for MONTHS lol. They were super fun to design and draw and I'm super excited to do more with them soon!! This piece is relatively simple but more so serves as their introduction hehe

Tarmac is an aeromorph, although a bit more towards the furry side of things rather than the plane side lol. His design is influenced primarily by the Concorde and the Space Shuttle! I couldn't decide for the life of me which of those two things I wanted to use so I thought "why not use both?" and here we are lol. I'm super happy with his design, with the black/dark gray markings mean to emulate the look of the Space Shuttle's thermal insulation tiles and then I really like how the red and blue stand out against the gray. I really like his icon too! I wanted to make it look like a stylized depiction of a plane (mainly a Concorde hehe) breaking through the sound barrier with a sonic boon! In terms of personality, I don't have a whole lot in mind yet. Mostly that he'd be the brave, adventurous type and since he can fly both in the air and through space, he's gonna be friends with Astro too :3

Soda is a pooltoy fox! I have wanted to make a pooltoy OC FOREVER (blame my mutuals for always posting/reblogging so many cool pooltoy OCs hehe). I finally got brave enough to actually give it a shot, and I love how he came out! I was mainly just thinking about summery themes and as I was just trying out different colors and stuff, I thought about orange soda, and that's the direction I ended up going! He's got a big stupid tail [affectionate] and can have either rounded bappy hands or have actual fingers, you're free to stylize that either way! I've only ever drawn a pooltoy character once ever before, so this was something way out of my realm of familiarity, but I'm so happy with how he came out! He's so shaped I love him so much already <33

So those are my two new guys! Making two new OCs at the same time is already a rarity for me lol. The only time it's happened before was when I made Rye and Pumpernickel back in August of 2021. And then making these guys when I had only gotten Astro about two and a half weeks ago means this is an exceedingly rare event for me lmao. My friends know how infrequently I make/get new OCs, so this just goes to show how much these guys have been bouncing around in my brain lately lol.

They are definitely gonna have some sort of connection to each other, but I'm not sure how I wanna go about that yet. Since I made them back to back, they are already connected in my brain, but I'm not sure how I wanna express that in a meaningful way. I don't wanna make them siblings bc, well, they're obv very different from each other lol, but they're kinda parallels (with one being in the sky and the other being in the water yknow), so as of right now they're definitely good friends with each other. I might upgrade that to bfs at some point in the future, but we'll see how things go hehe.

Anyways huge braindump of a post lmao, thank u for reading if u did! I'd love to hear your thoughts on these guys since they're so different from all my other characters! Also if anyone may wanna do an art trade of either of these guys (or Astro as well! I'd like to get more art of him too!) let me know hehe

“Alright, let's get started.” Amy said, clasping her hands together. She was standing in front of the large consoles that controlled the wall of monitors Tails had built.

“What’s the point in doing this?” A soldier, a brown raccoon, asked with a deep frown. “With Sonic dead there's no hope in us winning.”

“Sonic isn't dead.” Tails mumbled, his gaze locked onto the map sat atop the table everyone was gathered around.

“Then where is he?” The soldier asked, rolling his eyes. “You gotta grow up and accept that Sonic's–”

“Leave him alone.” Knuckles turned to the soldier to glare at him.

“I'm just saying!” The raccoon raised his paws defensively. “He needs to–”

“You've said enough, Ranger.” Amy frowned at him before sighing. “We're going to find Sonic, but right now we have to focus on pushing Eggman back.”

“Good luck with that.” Another soldier, a light blue lion huffed. “The closest thing we have to Sonic can't go outside without having a panic attack.” She made a point to look towards the little fox, rolling her eyes when he didn't move to argue with her.

Silver frowned at her, “He's going through a lot. Give him a break.”

“We're all going through a lot, Silver.” The lion said, crossing her arms. “But at least we're pulling our weight.”

“Come on, Quinn.” A gray cat sighed, “That's not fair.”

“Who cares about being fair, Hazy?” Ranger asked, frowning. “He's dealt with Eggman longer than any of us! He watched Sonic die, the least he could do is help out in the fights!”

“Hey!” Amy shouted, glaring at the raccoon and lion. “Both of you, stop it.” She scolded.

“You know we're right, Commander.” Quinn grumbled. “He's practically useless right now.”

More arguments broke out after that. Some defending Tails, but most berating him.

Silver went to join the conversation, but stopped when he felt a head push itself into his neck.

Looking down to his right, he found Tails trying to hide himself against the gray hedgehog. He was trembling slightly, ears pressed against his head as his paws clung to his tails that were twirled around each other.

Silver frowned, “Knuckles–” He looked up, stopping himself when he realized the echidna was standing now. He was arguing with Quinn, baring his teeth at her.

“Amy?” He turned to the pink hedgehog next, but she was busy trying to get everyone to stop yelling.

“Guys!–” Silver tried to raise his voice, but everyone else only got louder.

He groaned and looked around the room as he hugged the fox, trying to find a way to get everyone's attention.

His eyes eventually landed on the light switch beside the door.

Using his telekinesis, he flipped the switch down. The room went dark, causing the arguments to end in gasps as people looked around to figure out what happened.

Once it was just quiet mumbling, Silver flicked the lights back on. “Guys.” He called, watching as everyone finally turned to look at him. “You're scaring him.”

Knuckles and Amy immediately looked down at Tails, the latter's ears wilting at the sight of her brother.

Ranger scoffed and went to say something, but the pink hedgehog quickly beat him to it, “Silver, Knuckles, please go take him to his room and try to calm him down.” She ordered, looking at the two.

Silver nodded and shifted the little fox so he could pick him up as he stood from his chair. Knuckles walked ahead, opening the door for the hedgehog.

Amy smiled at them before turning back to the other mobians, specifically Ranger and Quinn, “We're gonna have a talk.” She decided, her smile dropping into a glare.

Silver could feel a shiver go down his spine at the sight.

He's just glad her anger isn't directed at him.

ngl lowkey feel like fandoms have an issue with categorazing familial relationships as strictly "parent and child" or "siblings" etc. and like-

friends can be family too. you don't have to categorize them as siblings or whatever everytime. there can be an age gap in friendship and it doesn't have to make it a parental relationship. altho usually i ignore it, it just kinda frustrates me sometimes.

pulling from fandoms i'm in:

-dsmp is really good at not falling into that. think i saw a post once abt how it's prolly bc the characters are so similar to their actors, so while early l'manburg is often seen as a found family, not everyone falls into a specific role of an "child", "parent", "aunt/uncle" etc. (tho there are exceptions purely based on how characters call each other in the rp)

-sonic fandom has a big problem with it, like first thing that comes to mind: people often call team dark siblings and i'm like... but they're friends and that makes their bond so strong, they don't have to be siblings for them being a family to be valid. and it feels lowkey so out of character to them seeing eachother as a sibling but that's for another discussion.

-another example from sth: silver and blaze. i'll be honest, i ship them based on au's and hc following '06 so that may be a big reason why i don't buy them being siblings. but also like.. i'd still buy them more as friends if i ignore the ship aspect? people go "younger brother silver" and "older sister blaze" and there they are - the same age (lowkey feels infantalizing towards silver too).

-or! vector with charmy and espio! i've seen people calling vector "the dad" and like.. he's not even that much older. like just bc he's oldest doesn't mean his interactions with the rest of chaotix are that of a father.

i feel like maybe people are afraid of shipping? like if they assign a character a sibling relationship they'll be more justified in not liking a ship or smth. like i've seen ppl saying that shipping shadouge is wierd cos they have sibling relationship and i'm like.. i don't ship that but no?? not saying it's always the case obv just smth i noticed

ofc you do you, like for me tails and sonic are brothers 100%, for you they may be a parent and child or just two besties. imma not jump into smns comments bc they called characters siblings or parent and child or whatever (i may even like the post) but i felt the need to rant.

Some spoilers to the Knuckles show too

Knuckles still has Iblis' powers from the Knuckle show! I don't have much to add onto this one just that I'm happy the concept of the power wasn't thrown away :)

Sonic and Donut lord might visit the cave that Sonic used to live in. This is also followed by Thomas saying that even if Sonic went through some tough times he's still the same in his heart (or his lungs). Perhaps Sonic felt like he changed a lot due to what has been happening and misses his old life back in green hills.

Shadow mourning Marias death right after the incident occured along with Eggmans dad who we don't know much about for now.

The majority of the story might take place in Japan (The sign in the background says "Tokyo Souvenirs).

But they also go to the London bridge at some point.

Thomas isn't wearing a police uniform but what seems to be a more military type uniform with the Lieutenant/Vice admiral rank on it and as far as I know his police precinct doesn't have red hologramic tables, ergo, he might be with the gun agency because he is directly associated to Sonic, Tails and Knuckles who are helping catch Shadow. Maybe he is also incorporated into whole catching Shadow thing, just maybe more backstage. Although he is also being tackles and does call out to Sonic as well, I only have slight ideas as to why but none big enough to really grasp onto any leads.

The trailer doesn't show Shadow the chaos emeralds at all (and also in the movie lore they're all fused into the chaos emerald), but shadow has all the powers as if he was using one. This could maybe mean that Project Shadow was all about using the Master Emerald to give powers to Shadow or he was just generally made with those abilities

Maria :D (with brown hair :o ). Also want to say that the water he is placed in is green, possibly something to do with the master emerald and or it's powers/energy? (Probably looking way to deep into this)

first part: a close shot of sonic and tails at the front of a car, which they'd popped open the hood of. sonic has a confident smile on his face as he raises one hand and wiggles his fingers, peering under the hood. "I know EXACTLY how to fix this," he says. tails, who is holding jumper cables, looks very alarmed, his tails bristling. he cries, "wait Sonic don't-"

second part: sonic sticks his hand directly inside the engine area and is immediately electrocuted. his quills cartoonishly stand on end, all spiky, and sparks go flying everywhere, both off him and from under the car hood. tails, dropping the jumper cables in surprise, turns away, shielding his face from the sparks.

final part: the camera shot pulls out so the entire car, sonic, and tails are all in full view. the car has actually started working again, rumbling and going "vrrrrmm." tails, looking pleasantly surprised, puts his hands on his hips and goes, "well huh!" sonic looks a little worse for wear, his quills ruffled and smoke drifting off him; he gives a big awkward grin like he mildly regrets doing that, but he still gives tails a thumbs up anyway. end id]

Hi, it’s been awhile. Idk if this is unpopular but I feel the reason to exclude Knuckles from the rest of the main cast because he’s the guardian of the Master Emerald rubs me the wrong way. Silver and Blaze I get, but Knuckles has always been that character whose development is slowly opening up and joining others. It’s subtle but it’s there. While Tails and Amy look up to Sonic, Knuckles is more of a peer and it adds something different to Sonic’s close circle.

P.S.: I gave up on IDW awhile ago but seeing that Riders comic without him stung 😣

Long time no see! You're not the only one who feels that way :P

Personally, I think the choice to exclude Knuckles is due to multiple factors:

the most obvious one, that he's supposed to guard the ME. Even though by the end of Frontiers, he seems to have accepted (again...) that he's afforded to live a little. You know, I think that by this point, if they wanted Frontiers to be relevant to the comics, they had time to reference it (the game came out one and a half year ago), but this is proof that IDW is running in its own parallel timeline.

Amy is more popular than Knuckles. This is undeniable. Her dynamic with Sonic is much much more popular, and this is even more undeniable. Let's be real here: If Knuckles had been the one struck by a malfunctioning gear, would Sonic have yelled in big pink font? :P Especially IDW Sonic, who is not above throwing mean jabs at him when he's not there.

I don't think the writers know how to write Knuckles, and they quietely phased him out like they did with Shadow - we just don't hear much of it because, again, Knuckles is not as popular. When he has appeared, he was reduced to a grumpy boomer who couldn't wait to yeet people off "his" island, to the point that it was his main concern during the MV crisis. He was better in #62, but still, I don't trust like that anymore.

Funny that you mention Silver and Blaze, because guess what? They're chilling with the Restoration. They could have participated if they wanted to. Obv they aren't needed for this plot (Silver has done more than enough...), but I just want to point out that the time traveller and the dimension hopper have had more screentime than the dude who is just living a few miles in the air :P see what I mean when I say he was phased out?

Haha, so I did a thing.

Story time!: I had a rough go of it this month and I've been over hyperfixating on Sonic to help cope. Working on my personal project was getting too much because I didn't have the energy to put thought and care into the thing. One thing I'd do is listen to to sonic related videos while I drew- y'know, keep it relevant and keep the mood going. One thing led to another, I listen to a Sonichu comic reading and a Project SNT Sonichu redesign video and here we are.

My brain pretty much went "wow, drawing is relaxing, and redesigning character's I have no attachment to and need literally no brain cells to use for it. A perfect combo!" So in a stress induced haze, I knocked out like 13 Sonichu characters as a distraction from everything around me. I figured I'd share them all here cause they'd just be abandoned in one of my folders otherwise- and I won't lie, I actually had quite a bit of fun working on these redesigns

<note: obv. I own none of these characters. This also is not intended to make fun of or offend anyone. I saw other artists doing this and thought it would be a silly little pass time, so no griping in the notes please>

Literally this one- this b*tch is the one that started it all. These were fun to draw mainly because I could just go crazy with the designs and the results often gave me a good little giggle.

She made me need to think a little bit because I could not figure out a satisfying color palette.

THIS- THIS A**HOLE. The fact I had to redraw this guy four times. Still not happy with how he looks but I’m not going through that again.

This drawing was interesting to figure out because it made me realize that Punchy is literally just Knuckles but… y’know. Also I want everyone to see the little tail I gave him. It’s so important to me you see his silly little Pikachu tail. It was a spur of the moment idea and I love it.

And this is the last one tumblr will let me post due to the max photo limit. I'll have a few more posts with the rest. (Also she came out really cute and I'm very happy with the results).

Last night I had the weirdest dream but it would make a really good fic if I'm fr. The only part I remember vividly is the part where Tails fell into a cave, I guess it's more like the ground opened under him and swallowed him whole lol. So obvs his friends start looking for him after he doesn't make it to where they're all supposed to meet up at.

Kitsunami (who was very much not part of the search party) ends up accidentally finding him after finding a different entrance to the cave, except instead the ground opening up under him he finds the actual entrance. The ground ends up being super slippery so instead of just having a normal time, he falls, and ends up somehow tumbling all the way to the bottom of the cave.

Now from this part of the dream on I only had access to whatever Kit was seeing for whatever reason. He finds Tails pretty quickly, even tho he didn't know he was even lost and they end up having to work together to get out. This cave system was super weird too, it was a bottom layer that had water up to their knees, a higher layer that was essentially an ocean, an upper layer that was desolate but an actual maze, and then there was ground level. Maybe that's just how caves work but I don't think it is.

So this whole dream is dark, Tails had a flashlight that helped a little. They escaped the bottom layer by chipping into the ice above them to get into the ocean layer. (Unrealistic note, the water did not flood in, it just stayed at the top and they had to jump to get up there lol) How did they breathe here? I don't remember ! I do remember there being little bits of land they could walk on tho, and the only reason I remember that is bc at one point Tails had this scary ass look on his face that I can literally only describe as fear incarnate, but he wouldn't let me(kit) turn around to look at what made him look like that, so I have no clue what he saw and he acted completely off for the rest of the dream too. (<- this is common for me when I have nightmares, people in dreams tend to direct me away from the scary things and not let me look at them, but I suppose after having only nightmares for 4 years your brain has to protect itself somehow lol)

After the water layer they got to the dry layer, I don't really remember a lot from this. My most vivid memory is Tails pulling Kit out of the water with a queasy look on his face, there's a few moments of walking I remember, but nothing really interesting.

Then they were out of the cave, once again from a completely different entrance, then I don't know lol. I know Sonic and Amy show up but past that I have no clue, after that I started dreaming about school.

Bottom layer

But instead of just rock, imagine a mix of solid white ice, crystal, and rock, and also it's really really REALLY dark lol. It's over all just a confined, claustrophobic space. There's barely enough room for the two to fit in there standing up, im sure if Sonic was there he would have to crouch

Middle layer

if i were to indulge in a scenario i'd want to see sonic generations style is how there the modern and classic sonic and tails and if we take modern to start from SA and such and assume that classic interpretations could have some OVA influence [ as in, in the scenario, not in canon, obvs classic came before the ova]

then i'd love for an instance where we get to see younger sonic have no patience for taking care of entertraining a 4 year old, i dont blame him hes 11 afterall. like how in the ova sonic screams at tails to shut up lmao

Sonic Movie 3 trailer thoughts, don't read beyond this point if you haven't seen it or otherwise don't want to be spoiled

Pros:

-I'm excited for the fights in this movie but that's not a surprise

-VERY curious as to how they'll handle Shadow and his backstory since Gerald is still in the picture

-I do like Keanu as Shadow although I feel like I need to hear more of the voice to decide if I'm really sold on it

-THE MOTORBIKE i was hoping it'd get used. I Was wondering if the one that's been on tour irl is a prop from the movie but it doesn't look like it? Plus they used it as a movie 3 ad at gamescom even though the backdrop for it used Movie 2 assets just with the 3 logo because like. We had gotten NOTHING yet. No trailer, no posters, just the logo for it.

Cons:

-H a t e that Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are being called on by the government now. I know this is the most copaganda Sonic of them all just by having Tom be a cop, and Wade being a protagonist too since he got his own show and all (lol. Lmao)

But I didnt expect them to go full in given that in the first 2 movies the military is the secondary bad guy. The story this movie is based on (SA2, obv) is the most anti-military thing ever and it could've easily still been the case for the movie too. Shadow gets out, overconfident military idiots think they can get him back on their own AND get Sonic too in one fell swoop by framing him for Shadow's bad deeds. It's even easier here than in the games because they could just go 'Well we only know one too fast for the naked eye hedgehog alien so its clearly you doing this'

-I've been against Jim Carrey putting on a fat suit from the start. Because I knew that if movie Eggman didn't start out fat (which he didn't) and gets fat later then they'd go for the fatphobic angle of 'ewww hes fat now ewww hes a slob because being fat and a slob go hand in hand guys right am I funny yet huh guys haha do you get my joke yet' and that's EXACTLY what happened in this first trailer alone

Extra notes: I dont know why they think Eggman getting zapped by the quill is so funny that they had to do it 3 times, however I was watching a Sam stream just today where he was like 'if he licks that quill again im gonna fight someone' so I do think it's funny from the aspect of 'oh man theyre gonna get him in the trailer alone' HSDHSHDS

gonna drop a silly little happy auau idea i had since its prob gonna be a while until i feel pog enough to actually draw it- ujhhhhh ok so like, metal is an active threat in Happy Auau, swearing vengeance on Sonic and Co (Shadow, Silver, Tails, and ghost Knuckles) after they whooped his ass back to mobius (he has completely dominated the Sol until they arrived, also omg hi blaze!!) So obv Metal is a lil pissy about having all his work ripped out from under him by his horrible flesh counterpart, after he HAD ALREADY WON. So hes trying to fucking kill the shit out of them, for real this time. Hes causing so much terror that sonics the one to put forward the notion that they need to shut him down for good, which is how u know its serious sdbhfhjds. its been a long time since sonics had a real rival challenge him like metal, and part of him wants to keep the adrenaline and fight- but as a wise(r) old man he knows that metal is too much of a greater danger to a kingdom hes trying to protect. I never realized you had a tumblr. I started reading your Lost Prince fic last year after rewatching the old sonic cartoons for nostalgia and have been low key obsessed since.

The suspense of it all! You look at the sonic underground tag on ao3 and look at the ones that have characters from the games and they’re mostly one shots. You especially don’t get to see much, if any, drama between Sonic’s bio and adoptive family.

Speaking of! Are you willing to ramble about the situation between Tails, Sonia, and Manic?

Yeah, I've had this thing for a while, but I don't post much (obvs) because A) I'm more of a lurker, B) as you can tell from my long-form posts that don't make for hilarious reblog chains, it's not really my style, and C) I don't know what I'm doing.

But I do enjoy rambling about characters, so WHY YES!

To talk about Tails and Sonia and Manic, I think I first have to rant a bit about Sonia and Manic and their respective relationships with Sonic, because it matters.

Something I'm really noticing on this rewatch is that the ONLY thing Sonia and Manic seem to connect about is how much they resent Sonic's arrogance. When he's not around, they tend to bicker, unless they're focussed on how much Sonic annoys them. And I think that's a pretty telling keystone of the Sonic Underground: it falls apart without Sonic. He is their focus point, and he matters to their ability to function both with each other and the resistance as a whole.

Despite bickering constantly because Sonia's a girly-girl and Sonic's a gross, arrogant, BOY, Sonia and Sonic have a fairly decent working relationship, and they actually seem to bond over that when they're not trading off irresponsibility. They fight well together, they rely on each other to get intel or materials, they are usually the field agents to Manic's technician. They might argue near constantly, but it really does start to come across more like stress relief, because when it MATTERS, they're usually on the same page.

Manic, on the other hand, has much more of a little brother vibe with Sonic. They hang out, they goof off, Sonic knows how to do almost everything Manic does (and is usually better at it), and he's very much guiding Manic to being a responsible member of the Resistance. Manic is super dependent on Sonic physically (because he always needs rescuing), emotionally (Sonia just doesn't trust him, and she makes that clear fairly regularly), and morally (Sonic curbs Manic's thievery while still accepting it and his underworld contacts as valuable).

So they have different relationships with Sonic, but the one thing they have in common (at least at the start of the fic) is that they also feel a real sense of OWNERSHIP over him. He's THEIR brother, by blood and bone. And as I mentioned in the post about Aleena, this family has some real idealised concepts of unconditional familial love. It's made worse for the triplets because they have been trauma bonded, and they do seem to spend the vast majority of every single day with their hands in each other's pockets. For the purposes of my fic, they spent an entire year living, fighting, and bonding together.

Sonic never quite connects with the other two the way they seem to depend on him. He goes off on his own, he's capable, he's (generally) responsible, but he doesn't rely on them.

And then, in the fic, he leaves.

The Sonic Underground touchstone left. And they heard nothing but their mother reassuring them it was fine.

The siblings are not okay at this point. So they do what they always do when left alone - they connect over their shared feelings about Sonic. And so that compounds the feelings they already had for him: Sonia doesn't feel like she can work effectively without him, and Manic doesn't feel like he can be a good human mobian without him.

MEANWHILE, Tails.

Prior to meeting Sonic, Tails was not on a good path. He was bullied, and he was ANGRY about it. Tails is dangerous, and I think people often forget that. He was building bombs and guns and devices long before he started fighting Robotnik/Eggman. But he met Sonic, who didn't bully him, but instead made him feel good about himself and his skills. Through Sonic, he met Amy, and Knuckles, and everyone, and they all respected him, and liked him, and our adorable fox-boy learned to stand proudly on his own as a hero.

In a lot of ways (even ignoring the fact Manic is definitely supposed to be another world's Tails), he and Manic are very similar. They were raised out of what they can now recognise as bad paths by their relationships with Sonic.

And I don't think anyone can deny that Sonic and Tails have a legitimately brotherly relationship (unless you're a shipper, but whatever). But the important difference is that it was a natural one. It evolved on its own, with no prophecy or Oracle or necklace saying "you two must be together" - they just legitimately grew close.

And another--I would argue--more important fact: Sonic absolutely relies on Tails. For inventions, for emotional support, for fun, Tails is Sonic's brick, and he (and Knuckles) can get through to Sonic when nothing and no one else can. And Tails KNOWS it.

But he doesn't think he deserves it. Tails' whole deal is about self-confidence, and his struggle with it. It doesn't matter that he's a genius, it doesn't matter that he's a hero. He's a victim of bullying, and so a huge part of his psyche is never going to get past the idea that he is a freak and a weirdo and not deserving of any affection.

So a big part of him clings to Sonic for validation. Because Sonic cares. Sonic will always care about him.

And then these two STRANGERS come out of NOWHERE, claiming ownership of HIS BROTHER FIGURE. Ownership forged in blood and bone and prophecy. And so all his insecurities, all his fears that he's not good enough, they are all coming back SO HARD, no matter how much Sonic tells him he's got nothing to worry about. You can't just tell a victim of bullying that they're loved and worthy, they won't believe you even if they want to. That's not how that kind of scarring works. So Tails is going to get jealous, and he's going to be an idiot.

With Sonia, it's easy, because she's A) female, and B) treats Sonic more like a colleague. And Tails can roll with that, because Rouge, Knuckles, Shadow - he's had experience with other people taking bits of Sonic's attention like this. And Sonia, in turn, just sees Tails as a friend of Sonic's with skills they can use. He's basically a very young Cyrus, cool.

But Manic... he's just as insecure as Tails. And unlike Tails, who has experience of being a hero in his own right, often without Sonic anywhere in sight, Manic has--not ONCE--stood entirely on his own as something worthy. He has ALWAYS relied on his siblings, and specifically Sonic. He's got nothing to combat his issues.

AND Tails is a better mechanic than him (a skill Manic only picked up because Sonic introduced him to the skill through the Resistance), AND he knew Sonic first, AND he claims to know MANIC'S ONLY BROTHER better than Manic himself.

AND Tails has realised that the whole medallion thing (which Manic is clinging to as proof of his connection and ownership over his brother) is slowly destroying Sonic. And Manic is pushing it, giving Sonic reasons to wear it, giving Sonic reasons to stay in this place that's hurting him. So that's got Tails' ruff up, too.

I'm just saying there have been smaller sparks to start catastrophic bushfires.
