Spoilers for Sarah's personal quest!

It's bad enough you can't actually give Cora books, not even the one she specifically requests, repeatedly. But on top of that to not give us any opportunity to throw a little nerd tween slumber party for her and Sona, or even just let them hang out and interact at all!??!? BEYOND CRUEL.

Dear Creator. You gave us these two lovely young girls and yet so little interaction with them. I really wish they are more then just background filler. (also why the need to make them near identical?)

Cora. She keep asking for books, and yes I can find so many on my journey, yet I can't give her any. A small inventory for books, max 20 limit would be so ideal. Also she ask if I read any book lately and I have zero chance to say yes or reason, I don't b/c you know mission after mission. If I can't respond, then these lines from her just empty time wasting moments. Would I like to take her on the survey task on planet with air and safe condition? Yes I would. Hoping a dlc or something. ( Cora get lost and need rescue or pirate captive need to free her. Something like that. I could keep going on how many missed opportunity. I know this game is not about raising kids but would add so much volume to the story of my oc and theirs.

Sona. We (Sara and I) 'rescued' her from her own home. Ripped from the nest of memories she made with her parents. We offered and she took the chance for city life. Again near zero interaction. Again, max 20 inventory the must. I would bring all the toys back to her to cheer her up. Digi frame with her own memory frames to fall asleep on. Yes pls. I would love to take her to shopping. She wears a same clothes. I wish to upgrade her gear. She jokes about take her on the ship but she is a child so not yet. (but Cora can. hmmm) To a surveying task for Constellation, she should come with me. She need to see and learn not just from books. The Constellation members ignoring her. Sara totally ignoring her. We brought Sona back because Sara wanted it. It is wise, I would want it too. Sara a good word makes wonders to a young soul. Doit! Sona is like a living ghost. Not a nice words when they pass her. A few words she stops me and I am happy for that. But that is it.

Now both girl. Both in the lodge. Why they have actually zero interaction. I wish to catch them giggle an gossip. Share knowledge or heck drag the grown up life and they pinky swear never grow up. I want them to get into little trouble. We can hear Sam tells Cora to clean her room, so it is possible to add small teaching of good behaviors to the girls. Or give me regularly drawings to take with me on my journey for 'mood support'. It is coded in game already. The girl on Cydonia can draw and she can give it to me to put them up to places. I want Cora's drawing on my home settlement on the kitchen wall. Domestic wish? maybe. After all she is my step daughter. Why not. I wish Sona draw me her happy moments as she grew up. I wish they are under my feet when I am back at the lodge. They are young full of curiosity and eager to learn. I wish they say something when I am crafting. Would I wish I can recruit or send Sona to an outpost? Yes I would. She would get the best of all. Sleep over party with Cora under grown up 'watch' Sam and I would have a crack out of it mingle with the girls. Adopt Sona? absolutely.

These things just a small part how I feel about these young girls. So much let down. Don't get me wrong, I love the game just wish these things would be in for my personal flavor.

Kit and Sarah: Their story

The first time they met was... a blur. Kit was still shook from extracting their first artifact and rarely remembers anything. What they do remember is Sarah's kind eyes that had this spark of adventure awaiting in them.

While Sarah did not even allow herself to think about the new rookie in this way, Kit on the other hand fell in love on the first sight. Not very professional considering she was their "boss" now. This was followed by the very drastic hair change, a typical queer move in my books. Try to treat falling for seemingly emotionally unavailable girl by dyeing your hair, that will work for sure!

Just when Kit was giving up on ever getting to love Sarah as more than friends, the emotional dam she was holding broke in front of their eyes. There was no time to waste, in the rush of their newest discovery, Kit wanted to spend every waking moment of their lives in this universe together and Sarah very much agreed. Completely skipping over the dating step, straight up asking Sarah to marry them.

Of course she said yes... They got married soon after, privately on a beach in Paradiso. Constellation members still tease them about not being invited to it, but deep down they all understand. It did not stop them from throwing the newly-weds a party as soon as Noel noticed the rings.

Space exploration does not wait though, the now married couple got straight back to it. Too eager to figure out where this mystery leads. Sarah says she will probably never get used to the way her wife drives, but Kit thinks she secretly enjoys the thrill.

During all this, Kit was on their way back to the UC Army to serve as a SYSDEF member by sheer coincidence. They never forced or begged Sarah to get back into uniform, but Sarah knew it made Kit happy when she attended all their initial promotions in her old UC Navy uniform. It may have even helped her make further peace with everything. Kit always made sure to take her for some coffee as a treat for pulling out that uniform.

These days, they live happily and keep exploring together during the week and spend the weekends recharging in New Atlantis. Taking yearly anniversary trips back to Paradiso and not rushing to the Unity. Maybe one day, when they are both elderly.

For now they have each other and Sona. They plan to savor every moment of the next tens of years together as a little family. Both Sarah and Kit enjoying the domesticity... partially for Sona, but also for themselves. They just wont admit how much they needed this change of pace.

Closing notes: Yes I am coming in HOT again with my Starfield OC and I am not sorry- I hope you had fun reading it though!

Starfield Rant

My ONE big splurge of the year (I allow myself one splurge a year because of all our debt we're trying to pay off)--bought before I got so sick and realized we were going to have to return to the US--and it turns out to be the most poorly-written game I have ever played.

I could have gotten Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption, The Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, or a couple or three of those put together for what it cost to pre-order Starfield.

Starfield has so much going for it in so many ways, and I was so excited, because I'd been waiting for YEARS for it to release. And I do enjoy certain aspects of it, but oh, my Sagan the writing is SO BAD! It'll probably be the last Bethesda game I purchase--at least until they get a competent head writer.

Look, I'm pretty generous with hand-waving stuff away, but how do you make a space game without even knowing the difference between a planetary system and a galaxy? How do you write ANYTHING without any attention at all to verisimilitude? How can you not know the difference between a transcript and a recording? How do you write a world with equipment that can do detailed genetic and cellular tissue analysis in seconds, but not have a single biologist figure out that the most ubiquitous in-game pest and the most-feared hostile creature are the same species?

How do you accidentally make a supposedly sympathetic character into a monster who abandons their crew on a hostile world for twenty years (resulting in the deaths of all crash survivors and the orphaning of the daughter of two survivors), when said character knows exactly how to find them--because the character "just can't face their past?" (She indicates she knew there might be survivors, but even if she thought they all died, you always MAKE SURE. The UC Navy is complicit here, as well.)

It goes beyond that, too. Sarah's entire quest is written in a way that makes her seem like a villain. First, if the real issue was "facing her past," all she had to do was tell someone, "Hey, the location of the other shuttle is on the computer in the shuttle I crashed in. Go rescue them or recover their remains." But she didn't tell anyone.

Then also notice that Sona talks about how excited she was to leave with the Crimson Fleet pirates and how she cried when they left without her, but goes into a screaming tirade when Sarah offers to take her away, although she is adamant--but not convincing--when she goes out of her way to declare her parents' admiration for Sarah and how Sarah did nothing wrong.

Conclusion: Sarah did something awful, was willing to sacrifice her crew to keep anyone from finding out, and was only willing to be pushed into checking on them twenty years later because she assumed they'd all be dead by then. This entire quest is written exactly the way I'd write it if I wanted to make clear (without directly stating it), that Sarah was an evil person who was, perhaps not willing to kill to keep her secret, but was perfectly willing to ALLOW multiple people she could have saved by speaking a single sentence to die rather than have that secret revealed.

And all you'd have to do to fix it is make it so Sarah was found AWAY from her campsite, and her own shuttle wasn't found until just now, and she was offered a chance to be the one to check on it. Or make it so the data isn't on her computer, but somehow now, after twenty years, Sona accidentally tripped and emergency beacon that her parents never activated because they didn't know the war was over. There are other solutions; I'm just saying it would be easy for any halfway competent writer to not fuck this up.

There's other stuff just in that one quest that is way off, and outside of that quest, I could easily give a hundred or more other examples off the top of my head of just lazy, objectively bad writing that any creative writing teacher (or any competent editor) would circle in red with some polite variation of, "WTF?" The ONLY good thing about the writing is the punched-up dialogue. That's it.

I mean, Skyrim has a lot of basic mistakes, too (like not knowing the difference between seep and steep), but with Starfield, it appears that Bethesda has just completely given up on any semblance of decent writing. I'd put the writing on the level of, say, the old Power Rangers shows, except that would be an insult to those who wrote for those shows.

Then again, Emil Pagliorulo (Bethesda's "writing director") has zero qualifications as a writer. I personally know at least a dozen authors (some critically-acclaimed, award-winning, and best-selling) who could do a better job, but who have to keep non-writing day jobs to make ends meet while this jackass gets paid for a job he's nowhere remotely qualified for. Hell, Pagliorulo has publicly declared his disdain for the very idea of trying to write well, saying that if you give the players a book, they will just "tear out the pages and make paper airplanes."

Like, dude, that just means you need to get some chops and write a better book.

Starfield spoiler for Unity

I realised that the Sona story you can tell her about the two people lost at sea, crossing each other, can be interpreted as you and the other starborn through the unity, wandering the same endless sea, with so very few chances of ever seeing each other again. Endlessly missing each other, seeking the eyes of those you used to love, but only meeting the echo of your favorite song.

But you'll savor each note just the same. Melancholy makes for one hell of an orchestra.
