FFXV Fic Recommendations

Hello! I thought I’d share some of my favorite fics from my most favorite game. Will update with more when I read more. Thank you!

Set Thy Hidden Stars On Fire by MYuzuki (16k words)

This time, when Prompto wakes up to start a new loop, it’s raining.

Normally, this wouldn’t be a cause for concern (or even a blip on his radar, really) but this time he wakes up outside for some reason, which means he’s in the rain.

And as his luck would have it, it’s something of a downpour.

If you love Prompto, you’ll love this fic. It’s relatively short, but managed to have me still think about it nearly a year after reading. MYuzuki is a great author!

Salvation by cassisluna (11k words)

Nyx Ulric lives and accompanies Lunafreya across Lucis to wake the six. Written for the 2021 FFXV Reverse Bang.

As she travels to wake Titan and Ramuh, Luna is grateful for the time given to her to see the land of Lucis with her own eyes and feet.

Nyx promised the King that he would see Princess Lunafreya to Altissia, and it seems easy enough—until he learns the Oracle's price for forging the covenants. After that, it's just a matter of... maybe going off-route for a while to let the princess sight-see for a bit.

I love anything that expands upon Lunafreya’s character or Kingsglaive. This fic did not disappoint with that at all.

Worth The Risk by Asidian (6k words)

It's captivating. Prompto's probably going to have thirty-eight photos of it for them to relive the experience, in vivid detail, later on.

But Prompto's not taking pictures anymore, Noct realizes. The camera's stopped.

And when Noctis looks over to see what the matter is, Prompto's just staring through the view-finder, head angled up. He's gone absolutely sheet-white – looks like he might pass out. He says, "Noct," very softly, like it's a plea.

Then the world explodes, and something slams into Noctis with the force of a subway train, and everything goes dark.

I adore Asidian’s writing, especially for Prompto. This, and any of their other fics you should absolutely check out!

Honor Bound by The_Asset6 (125k words)

It’s still hard for Ignis, Gladio, and Prompto to believe that Noctis has been gone for a year. However, when an old ally appears to tell them that what is gone might not be lost after all, that spark of hope they kept alive during their ten years apart is rekindled. Their only question: what will they have to sacrifice this time in order to bring their brother back alive?

This fic focuses more on the bros rather than Noctis himself, and it was really nice to see from their POV how far they’d go to get Noct back. A longer read but didn’t drag, great fic!

Somnus Ultima by The_Asset6 (349k words)

King Regis and Queen Aulea’s desire for a child has finally been fulfilled, as well as their kingdom’s need for an heir to the throne. However, when a dark mage with a vendetta against Lucis blesses the young prince with a deadly curse, they realize that no sacrifice is too much when it comes to someone you love.

But too much, it turns out, is never enough.

A sleeping beauty AU! I won’t lie, this one is long, but it’s so worth it. I don’t typically like AU fics, preferring canon-compliant work, but I gave this one a chance and didn’t regret it. The author made great use of the characters and created a lengthy but not hard to read story that was very enjoyable.

Noct. Voice controlled, each word precise and even. In other words, pissed off to the point of seething. Prompto had obviously screwed up. Again. Seemed about all he was capable of doing lately when it came to Noct—and just about everything else.

Hair: Inky black with blue highlights. As he gets older, his highlights turn blue-gray. Eyes: Ice blue. Right eye is serpentine and glows slightly. Colloquially, people refer to it as a "Demon Eye." Skin: Tan. Tattoos/Scars: Following the events of Pandaemonium, Etienne was gifted "tattoos" by his Azem, Selene. These aren't actually tattoos, but serve as conduits for him to channel Ancient magics for brief periods of time. Eti didn't acquire many scars during his time as a WoL. It was only during his final confrontation in Ultima Thule that this changed, having received a pretty dire stab wound on his stomach (thanks Zenos.)

Parents: Chihaya no Yatsurugi (F) [Deceased] Born to the noble family of Yatsurugi. Chihaya was reclusive and quiet by nature, preferring to remain hidden from the public eye. She was known to suffer from severe bouts of melancholia which progressively got worse as she aged. Chihaya loved her son dearly, and Etienne was all but attached to her at the hip as a child. Sadly, she grew more and more apathetic until she withdrew from Etienne completely. Gyokusei no Kaifu (M) [Deceased] Head of the Kaifu clan. Etienne's relationship with his father was resentful at best. Gyokusei saw potential in him, but believed he suffered from the same "laziness" his sister had in abundance. He hated how timid and sensitive Etienne was, and would often push his son to the very brink in order to mold him into someone deserving of his birthright. Despite everything, Etienne still loves both his parents. He just doesn't enjoy talking about them. Siblings: None Grandparents: To be continued.... In-Laws & Others: In-laws are deceased, but if Noelle and Hemlock (Vrai's Moms) were still alive they would like him <3 Etienne's only surviving family member is his aunt on his father's side - Sayo no Kaifu. Etienne visits her once a year and they have a good relationship.

While he can't alter the flow of time itself, he can perceive it differently, allowing him to move at speeds that should be impossible. Hobbies: LOVES FISHING. Most Positive: His honesty. Etienne will never, ever lie to you. He would rather count every grain of sand in the sea than resort to deception. Need an honest opinion? He's your man. Need a straight answer? He will give it to you. (He's not book smart at all, but for good friends he's emotionally intelligent and highly empathetic. He speaks so little because he listens veeerrry intently, and he considers every. single. word he says before it leaves his mouth.) Most Negative: Destructive and cruel. When his melancholia is at his worse, he gets EXTREMELY cold and ices people out. Impossible to read, he shutters his emotions until he inevitably explodes on the battlefield or in his room.

final fantasy 15 thoughts (replay)

just as a psa, spoilers of course but also this is not in chronological order, not by a long shot as these are thoughts / feelings i’ve been holding onto for almost ten years. (also, i’ll add to this once i’ve finished dawn of the future.)

this is easily the most tense, creepy and downright freighting final fantasy game. say what you will about chapter thirteen but they really know how to build momentum in such an eery way in gralea (you can literally find the clothes of npc’s you’ve encountered like dino’s, in other words they’ve been taken and turned into daemons by the niffs). also, arguably the most bittersweet ending. as, pretty much everyone dies. everyone in kingsglaive, apart from libertus dies.

i used to think ray chase went a bit over the top in the early game in-terms of acting but upon revisit, he absolutely smashes it. that section as the boys look over insomnia is heart-wrenching. final fantasy to me has always been a bit wishy-washy in-terms of voice acting. characters were passable but the voice direction is a little messy at best and sometimes downright flat (which some of the terrible sound mixing doesn’t help) but when it comes to modern final fantasy games? they’re incredible and i couldn’t go back. ray, cody and ben were perfect in their roles (i low-key think cody got snubbed at TGA’s this year but maybe it’s just one actor per game).

on this scene though, i remember there being discourse about iris phoning noctis first, over gladio but it makes total sense to me. gladiolus’ role as the shield is to take a bullet for the king, if noctis is dead according to the press then how do you think that happened? we quite literally see it played out with their fathers.

fifteen’s soundtrack will always be my favourite overall, seven is up there too with ‘seven seconds till the end’, ‘one last date’, ‘tifa’s theme’ and ‘on our way’ but taking the entire soundtrack into account i’d have to say fifteen is just perfect, it’s one of the few things at launch that simply couldn’t be critiqued. also, considering it’s yoko shimomura ‘scala ad caelum’ from kh3 sounds like it could be ripped right from endgame ffxv. its sounds like a more darker version of ‘somnus ultima’. like ‘true love’ is basically luna’s theme + ‘somnus’ as one. ‘home sweet home’, ‘lightless journey’ and ‘dewdrops at dawn’ are perfect in every way (can you tell i like a good piano and violin number? also, if you like ffxv, go listen to professor layton’s, ‘london streets 3’)

speaking of kh3, i have zero interest in anything but the versus thirteen stuff and whilst i don’t know if i’ll play it. i am seated for kh4 to see where nomura’s magnum opus goes, if anything i just want more of yoko’s ‘not, not ffxv’ music.

i truly wish there was more of the kings as they are without a doubt my favourite aspect in the lore with them obviously being this game’s version of ‘knights of the round’ and they way they wove this into an arthurian-inspired story. like, they basically beat you over the head that the ‘sword of the father’ is excalibur. yeah, we don’t have the physical summon but that’s not to say we can’t summon them, which we technically do as noctis is summoning their weapons and the way they’re depicted impaling noct and killing ardyn is basically how their actual summon is.

i’ve been writing this whilst waiting for my game to fully upload, so i only had a the option to play a new game with no royal additions yesterday and now that’s it’s downloaded, my almost two-hundered hour save file is gone, so looks like i really will be replaying this because i don’t have playstation plus. like cheers sony telling me i’ve got 187 hours in a game to only show me three saves that were created less than a day ago.

apparently there were cut lines of the npc’s mentioning what happened with the glaive. which is so disappointing because the kingsglaive themselves are such a big deal but i always felt this weird disconnect between the film and the game outside of regis and luna, like there’s not even a moment of iris and gladio talking about how their father was killed, like do they even learn how regis died?! if i’m right in thinking, the only reference to kingsglaive is when ignis mentions nyx putting on the ring, but we don’t ever learn of them hearing about it. pretty sure noctis would have some choice words, he doesn’t even mention ravus doing the same. also, luna was supposed to join the party with a bahamut summon?! which is kinda weird, because to me bahamut is as much the bad guy in the story as ardyn, somnus and nifflheim. if we wanna compare, it’s basically sephiroth, jenova and hojo.

i don’t hate kingsglaive i was just disappointed. the main thing the game got right was my main grievance with kingsglaive. these are comrades, friends brought together to fight for a city not technically their own and we never get to see how their relationships fall apart. we never see luche grappling with that fact he murdered crowe, especially when he comes across pretty ambivalent to the treaty, a close friend of hers and comes back to save nyx! you don’t properly understand why crowe was specifically chosen unless you get ‘big-brain’ about it. they also could’ve done much better with the foreshadowing and as much as i like nyx and his hero-complex is basically the only arc that works, i don’t think he should’ve won. luna has the ring, insomnia was destined to fall (as much as the kings pretend it won’t) and instead of ravus, considering what ardyn is putting them through emotionally in chapter thirteen, glauca should’ve been fought by the party or better yet, have glauca be fought just before facing ardyn in the throne room.

also, i saw a theory nyx was turned into the daemon that you eventually fight to get his weapons but his body literally turns to dust so…

again, with the glaive (sorry, i will get to the game itself!) the lack of foreshadowing and contradiction with luche bothers me so much, he wrote the damn treason letter. the glaive don’t need to know his intensions but the audience should! we don’t get to see their relationships outside of nyx. the only way i can justify luche coming back to save nyx, other than the recapture of luna is maybe a part of him still wanted to get his friend on board with the cause, but the way he goes about shooting him completely lacks any familiarity. drautos had crowe killed because he thought she was the one person that would turn nyx against regis. it worked on libertus and luche was enough of a suck-up to do it himself.

the cut content thing it’s just so ‘ugh’ like the main things i wanted was an explorable insomnia (as noctis) and gralea (cause it was inspired by the uk, which is certainly loaded) and noctis’ jpn va confirmed that the boys were present during insomnia’s fall and that would’ve been so fucking cool (and the perfect opportunity to give us one actual noctis and luna scene, like a fleeting moment of them promising to reunite that wasn’t as children). knowing that, i don’t even think that’s what kingsglaive was intentionally about because nyx came into the picture when they couldn’t use noctis, so chances are the film was supposed to be about the boys sneaking out of the invasion, which makes a hell of a lot more sense as the set-up of a game which ‘opens’ on them finally out of the capital. also, as great at the scene is, regis knows exactly who the “imperial chancellor” is.

i will never forgive square for having ignis be stuck with that jedward quiff, like give me yummy hair-down ignis!

cor’s apologising for not being there to save regis, just reminded me that he’s weirdly absent from the film and of all characters in the game, he should’ve had relevance

i beat one of the niff bases severely under levelled. i was a level thirty-two, the recommended is fourty-seven with two level fifty-two bosses, after two previous waves. got my ass handed to me the first time but, think think smarter not harder and the second time wiped the floor with them because thank go for the turret as a i really wanted to boost my level early.

wally west you cannot escape my ears, not even as a niff.

call me a purist, but i don’t think you should be able to access verse two in chapter thirteen until you’ve beaten the game. you miss out on an insanely key moment playing as gladio, like the whole damn reason for this journey, luna, nyx and regis’ death’s and insomnia’s fall were collateral for noctis to put on the ring and i know people complained there was no reason, but there was. players and noctis were too comfortable with the party and their weapon load-out. ardyn forces noctis and the players to put on that ring and prove himself that he and he alone is the true king. also, noctis taking on his own legacy but also his father’s which reads to me that even throughout all of this, regis will always be there when his son needs him most. you get none of that as gladio.

comrades “ending” actively contradicts the ending of the game, like noct leaves the rock alone but in comrades a group of glaives go to retrieve him.

work with me here but i think crowe should’ve been an insomnia native. like, to say, look what the king would do to his own people.

i remember the qte being a lot shorter my first time, so i’m assuming you get as many of the royal arms as you have collected pre-ardyn. which i think i got ten? including the five you get during the story. (i’m still bitter about my save disappearance because i worked damn hard to collect all the royal arms, cause fuck costlemark tower).

i know it’s the in-game lighting but noctis’ final cgi scene shouldn’t be as bright as it is before he brings back the light.

originally (baring in mind, i played base-base ffxv, like no updates whatsoever) considered ardyn being related to noct to be really lazy purely because they didn’t properly explain it until after you get sucked into the crystal and even then i wasn’t fully convinced until we got the gentiana update and episode ardyn.

i need to know the track that plays when noctis gets oracle’s trident, like after the cosmology one.

i’ve mentioned this before but if you know seven and get ‘big brained’ about fifteen’s plot then you can potentially have the caelum’s legacy spoiled by the time gang head to cape caem. you get the blade of the mystic whilst fighting the archaean and again, like i said, if you haven’t properly looked at that thing and know seven then ya probably should. to the game’s credit, you don’t get a proper look at the sword until episode ardyn and by that point you vaguely know what somnus did, or you’re about to find out.

i find it hilarious that the guy who voices wyv, also voices bahamut.

the way the game treats iris is rancid, she is fifteen-years-old square! i don’t care if she’s got a crush on noct, but don’t force me as him to play along it’s gross. also, luna being four years older that noctis is kinda janky too, especially when so much of their romance is shown as children. he’s like nine and she’s thirteen if i’m right in thinking.

visually, endgame cgi noctis and kingsglaive luna? damn that is one hot couple. they look too anime-fied in their final scene but i would’ve killed to see her kingsglaive rendition and older!noctis in its cgi glory.

aranea alludes to the fact that the emperor couldn’t go near the crystal and that ardyn was the only one who could (and that’s why ardyn insisted on being brought to insomnia because it wouldn’t have shifted without him) when you’re in tenebrae which should’ve set off alarms bells.

i don’t personally think luna was fated to die, at least not as soon as she did and had there been no imperial involvement her and noct’s journey likely wouldn’t have begun as early as it did (both she and noctis were clearly unprepared, noct more-so). to me, ardyn’s fate and personal vendetta merged in the killing of luna. to toy with noctis, push him over the edge but also taking his anger with aera (and somnus) out on luna and above all ending the remaining liability in the one cause he has control over. noct is the one true king who can end him, but that still means the caelum line could live on, even without noct. so what do? ensure the caelum line dies with luna. let’s face it, had ardyn not stepped in luna would’ve been free to join the gang and who’s to say she doesn’t end up with a caelum sprog? taking out the caelum line is ardyn’s one solstice.

i was gonna do the regalia side missions but then i remembered the glitched out sewer that gave me motion sickness.

noctis and luna are like really distant relatives, right?

on the previous comment of seven, like noctis and luna is just a shittier re-telling of cloud and aerith, even down to specifics.

noctis dies a fucking virgin, oh my god take this game off me.

the english localisation changing the “i love you” to the ‘#nohomo’ version still pisses me off. yes square, this man loves these men who are basically his brothers.

ardyn’s hatred of noctis probably isn’t helped by the fact he’s the spitting image of somnus and bahamut (which is obviously intentional because bahamut has a severe case of main character syndrome).

ffxvi verse.

ardyn caelum was born into the beginning of it all. where towns and kingdoms were to be established , where the blessing of the mothercrystals were almighty. his story begins with three: an oracle , a leader , and a healer. he was a man led by faith , blessed by the crystal to heal the blight which had began to creep among the edge of their new yet unnamed kingdom. the more he healed , the more blight he would absorb into his once empty vessel. maintenance of the lands was day around , traveling long distances over weeks and months to restore farms to their former glory & comfort the towns which had suffered for way too long in his eyes. the blight would take his strength , stone beginning to form starting from his chest and spreading out.

it would not take long for ardyn and his brother to start to have differing opinions , ardyn pledging to his people that he would heal the lands from the blight while somnus saw his healing as only preventing the inevitable. for ardyn can only heal so much , & his blessing was a curse itself by offering the false hope that one man could protect them all from it. for the mothercrystal would protect them , & it would only be a matter of time before they must protect their land from those far past their own. somnus was envious of his brother for he was able to use magic without the use of crystals entirely , he was convinced that it was unfair that only he would have access to this power while the rest of population could not have it at their beck & call. the eve of the proclamation of their kingdom slowly had gotten closer , each brother backed by their own groups of supporters , as they stood in front of the mothercrystal.

the oracle had been in contact with the mothercrystal , that one was to be proclaimed rightful king , & would have the right to name their land & lead them to prosperity. yet , what led was betrayal. somnus proclaimed himself as the chosen king , as the mothercrystal had told the oracle. for it would not be long until ardyn would encompass the blight , that he would become their downfall. it was his mission to slay this would-be monster ⸺ but the blade did not strike ardyn , & instead struck his beloved oracle , aera. it did not take long for her to pass , & struck by grief , it is only then that the blight he had held for so long began to seep from his features. his brother's blade struck true & deep into his heart. it was then , he had turned to stone. unmoving & presumed dead, he was buried underneath an unmarked grave far , far from the newly named kingdom , sidus.

but one day , thousands of years past his time , the stone had cracked away. he is alive , & there is a voice which entices him. there is rage , there is betrayal , & it is only then he knows the truth. he was meant to be king , & somnus' kingdom will fall.

this is heavily influenced by @royalarms's ffxvi verse! some more notes:

just for funsies i'm marking ardyn down as the first bearer. as the years go by , more and more are born. yet he would be the first recorded one in history , at least , before he was erased by it. knowing how bearers are treated in the current age , it brings him another motivating factor to simply destroy it all. bearer's are cursed to die , so why did he not ? how dare these kingdoms treat their own people as such ? is it all even worth it ? (correct answer 4 ardyn: absolutely not, burn it all to the ground.)

ardyn is able to now release the blight he had absorbed from the land. since blight is a side effect of aether , it is unknown if this was meant to happen since ardyn was only meant to be kind of the clean up crew & he was the beta version of it. it didn't work , so ultima did not have more humans have this power. it works out in the end , however , as ultima may find ardyn alive & need him to wipe out noctis since he is activity attempting to purify the land. ultima is just waiting for the game over screen , so it would be easier to just spread blight , have everything disappear , & start over , than to have noctis continue expelling the aether he had been collecting via mothercrystals.

he might have or might have not been an influence behind the downfall of sidus , for it was the first thing off his checklist. it is only after a few years that he notices that the blight has given him a sort of immunity to dying , just as the blight cannot just be erased. he cannot use epic shadow teleportation , however , he is able to disguise himself as those who had been killed & decayed by blight or by his own hand. a few years after that , somehow ardyn gets whereabouts of a living royal from sidus. he begins to search the lands for this royal , creeping ever closer with a few encounters. it seems he is always able to slip away.

voici donc ci-dessus la suite de l'univers alternatif mettant en scène les aventures de Somnus après l'enfermement du pauvre ardyn sur angelgard. il s'agit de la partie 5/5

Il y a beaucoup de variantes car il suffit de modifier l'ordre des gifs et on obtient une toute autre version, je vous en propose une assez jolie ici :

Il s'agit donc de Somnus parvenant à devenir visiblement un "big spectre en armure" avant la fin du compte à rebours. était-ce qu'il fallait faire ? Je l'ignore moi même ! Bref, il s'y produit ce qu'il se passe à chaque fois, c'est à dire Insomnia en feu et la citadelle recouverte d'une barrière rouge. Peut être que l'apparition des astraux ne se produisent pas à toutes les boucles temporelles, peut être manque-t-il Bahamut pour aider Somnus à accomplir sa tache ? (la vérité, c'est que j'ai pas assez de place pour rajouter les gifs de Bahamut hihihi) Bref, ici, les astraux interviennent mais pas Bahamut donc, et Somnus! bigspectre utilise "ultima sword flash". Cela a visiblement mieux fonctionné que les précédentes fois, il est de retour dans une insomnia avec celle-ci au ciel ensoleillé, Ardyn en est pas content du tout. Somnus regrette cependant, il doit aller jusqu'au bout de sa tache. Il se retransforme alors en "big spectre en armure" mais ... nope, il perd contre Ifrit, quelque chose manque toujours...

So I’ve edited Somnus Ultima, another piece of Yoko Shimomura, on Riku’s sacrifice and… I cried found it beautiful and really fitting, so I wanted to share it

So I finished the pitioss dungeon around 5 in the morning. Oh my gosh that was so HARD! I was constantly sweating like crazy as I attempted restraining myself from throwing my controller while Noctis kept falling off the teeny tiny platforms he had to jump on (I made sure to save that before I took off in my crash-prone regalia). But then it got me thinking: if many people don't enjoy this dungeon, how did Regis and his company feel about it when they went there?

THAT. DUNGEON. I rarely had trouble with falling, I’ll admit, but my claim to fame was slipping off a ledge straight into those red thorns. That room with the moving ball where you have to jump down through it? >_

…..so tumblr ate the rest of my message. WHAT I WAS SAYING was that in Somnus, Ardyn definitely had booby traps set up but abandoned them when he was found out by that messenger. He knew he wouldn’t be coming back, so by the time Regis and company checked the place out, it was more normal. (Like when you finish and all the doors are open.) If it had been like in the game, I doubt anyone would have made it out alive! That’s the short version of the super long reply I originally wrote...
