My top ten bl dramas (with kissing scenes but no sex scenes)

Not in any particular order.

Sometimes I want a romance but I don’t need the sex scenes. Sometimes I just like the kissing and the plot. So here are my top ten.

- 2G ether. Season 1&2.

A adorable fake dating story with entertaining side couples and a well written plot. It is an easy watch with a comedic story line. Any problems in season 1 and any questions left unanswered are covered in season 2. The main couple have great chemistry and the side couples seem to match it well.

It is one of my favourites because it is such a chill drama to watch and rewatch. It is one I tend to go for when I’m tired or needing serotonin.

- Minato Shouji coin laundry. Season 1.

A romantic comedy with a strangers to lovers trope. The plot revolves around a 17 yr old in love with a 27 yr old man. That put me off at first but the age gap is really well covered. The whole plot revolves around the age gap and how it affects them. It is both light hearted while dealing with the honest dynamic of their relationship. Both characters go through a wholesome journey of development, with Shin growing more mature and Akira learning to let himself be loved.

There is hints of a side couple but those characters go through development rather than have their relationship end romantically, which I really enjoyed.

The dialogue is very well written and the actors have really good chemistry together. Despite the age gap, it became one of my favourites in a very short amount of time. It is all so well done and they handled the dynamic wonderfully.

Though I did not like season 2 cause the writing was terrible. Still acted well but bad plot writing.

- We Best Love, N1 for you & Fighting Mr second.

Ignoring the two different titles, this is season 1 and 2 of the same drama.

It is a enemies to lover dynamic in season 1 with a enemies to lovers dynamic once again in season 2.

While the plot is overly dramatic at times and cliche, it is very well acted and the actors really work with their lines and make the cliche parts fit so well. They have amazing chemistry (especially in season 2) and I love their dynamics. The side couples don’t get much screen time but they fit very well with the plot and the dynamics of the main characters.

When it comes to pure chemistry, this couple is one of my all time favourites. They speak so much with their actions. It’s a drama that will entertain throughout. I didn’t get bored at all.

- Semantic Error.

Another Enemies to lovers trope between two opposing characters. Opposites attract between a digital media student and a computing student. The plot is well paced and the actors spark off each other very well. The character development is explored well and the filming style adds such a tension and uniqueness to the scenes. One of the reasons why it is a favourite is how the filming style works with the characters and highlights their personalities. Everything just flows.

There are no side couples in this drama however the side characters are well portrayed and fully dimensional. I enjoyed how each character’s dynamics worked with those around them.

- Sotus The series.

A real slow burn between a new student and his head hazer. Although the hazing put me off at first the show went to explain all viewpoints really well. It explained why the Hazers continued the tradition of hazing as well as the students who were experiencing it. The relationship is a real slow burn but it’s done so well and scenes had me laughing and crying.

It includes other lgbt side characters and a straight side couple who are cute and go through their own personal growth.

An old bl (2016) but a good one. It was one of my first ones and I will never get over it.

- Takara’s Treasure.

A more recently released drama, this show was so wholesome and cute. It dealt with a character’s journey as he joins a university in Tokyo after living in a small town his whole life. His slow burn relationship with his senior is very cute and green flag.

I sort of wish that there were more kiss scenes but I did enjoy the ones we go.

- Love for Love’s sake.

Another more recent drama. This one had me sobbing and giggling. For what seemed to be an intriguing plot about a boy seemingly playing out a video game where the goal is to make another boy happy turned into a really deep portrayal of depression and the loneliness of being lgbt. The romance and the relationships as they develop in this drama was all well paced and wholesome. The main character is iconic and he fights for what he wants which is great to watch. The drama itself was very well filmed. The cinematography didn’t distract too much from the plot but also made itself known and memorable. The pace was good though it could have done with maybe another episode towards the end, but with the time they had the pacing was pretty good.

This drama leads itself towards theory and not all the questions are answered but that is a good thing as an ending is provided but there is still enough to make one curious.

- Why R U? (Korean version).

While I enjoyed the original Thai version, the Korean version out paced it for me. While the Thai one had many side couples and confusing plot lines the Korean one keeps it just to two main couples. It deletes the cheating element of the second couple and made it more wholesome rather than dramatic. The first couple actually starts as enemies to lovers and their dynamic is very funny. They fight all the time and swear at each other before slowly starting to admire and appreciate each other before falling for each other. The show was well paced and very lighthearted. The cinematography wasn’t bad but could have been more fun.

Though it’s from the same books as the Thai one, it feel almost like a completely different drama. This one had me laughing much more.

- Stay With Me.

This is a Chinese drama based off a pervious BL drama called Addicted Heroin. Compared to the previous adaptation, the toxicity is taken out. Stay with me is mostly found family vibes between two step brothers, who don’t know that they’re stepbrothers for a long time, and how their relationship develops from friends to family. Whether this be family in a romantic sense between them or not, the show leaves that up to the viewer.

For a Chinese bl we do get kisses on the cheeks! Although I would like them to kiss properly. The show focuses on them growing as people and not just their relationship, which I enjoyed.

However, the show does end on a sob inducing cliffhanger and there has been no news about a season 2 yet. So watch at your peril. The show itself was well paced and very well acted.

- Unintentional Love story.

This drama is of a young man who was wrongly fired from his job finding a reclusive ceramicist. He is told that if he can get the famous artist to sign with his old company, then he will get his job back. What follows is a slow burn romance with misunderstandings and great character development. Since the characters are all adults in their late twenties to early thirties, the show has a different feel compared to a lot of other shows where the characters are teenagers or young adults. These characters are running businesses and having to deal with issues such as money problems and loans. It’s nice to see such realistic things playing a big part in a character’s motivation. Yet they still have moments fuelled by their feelings and impulses. But they grow and learn and that’s what makes this drama really wholesome and lovely to watch.

The side couple in this is left unresolved but with a hopeful note. However there is a history between them that is not fully explained. There has been a movie based on their backstory that has come out recently, yet I do not know if it resolves their relationship in the show.

One of the things I love in this show is the costumes. As the sunshine character takes on more depth and grows as a person, his clothing colour palette gets darker. While for the grumpy character who learns to open himself up again, his palette gets lighter and by the end of the show their outfits have swapped colours. That is a detail which I loved when watching.

Here you go. These are my top ten dramas with no sex scenes. While some of them may have making out scenes that fade to black, they are not explicit and the drama plots focus more on the storylines or the character growth.

So for anyone who doesn’t like watching sex scenes, I recommend the dramas above.

ROSS: A 16 year old girl and pansexual, she’s also part of the bullies (along with Roxer, Abigail, and more ocs that are part of the bullies that are friends with me). She’s in a relationship with Zip (OC x canon real!!) and is related to Mars as they are cousins. Ross works for Kyle as she was tricked by him. As there are ups, there are downs about her. She has done SH! on herself because of her depression, but she’s getting better as she is healing.

MARS: A 17 year old who is bisexual, he’s a junior and maybe the only surviving junior in this school for all he knows. He’s a dog shark that’s is very welcoming and friendly. He is in a relationship with Ember (side oc), I mean he’s a good doggie so yeah I can see why Ember be smooching his doggie ahh-

KYLE: A 19 year old shark boy whose attitude is not welcoming. There is a reason why he’s like that, his parents were killed by scientists that wanted to test on him, and he saw the whole thing at the age of 7-9 years old. Kyle escaped at the age 12-14 after learning a way out. He lived in the forest throughout his teenage years. He’s now a killer/assassin that forces Ross to help him out with his dirty work to kill the remaining scientists. But he’s in a relationship with Divine (side oc that will be part of the mains).

VUNET: The son of the sun that was placed on earth to protect it from any harm. He has befriended the main crew, including Kyle. (The sun father told Vunet to not always befriend everyone because they can hide secrets…) But Kyle treats him harshly like they are rivals. Vunet is not stronger than Kyle as Kyle is way more experienced in combat.

KAT: A 15-16 year old bisexual dinosaur girl who has the perfect grades as she always aces them! She’s in a relationship with Skull. (I just realized that Vunet got no beaches, that’s a fat L) Anyways she is very kind and sweet to everyone so don’t be shy to talk to her!

GAAAAHHH Alright so you first may be thinking “Why is it a traditional drawing? All of Pots drawings have been digital??” Hah! I have an answer for you, my friend! So if you see my blog, you’ll see I said something about not being able to draw in one of my posts. I mean…yeah. The device that I usually draw on is currently unavailable to me at the moment 😭😭😭 so I haven’t been able to work on any of the art I have on my device 🥺🥺 After a good while of being bored and sad I couldn’t draw on my device…I soon realized…I can literally just draw on paper!!!! I probably should’ve realized it sooner but 😵‍💫😵‍💫 This actually hadn’t been my idea for my post though. I was going to do something really dumb and not at ALL OW related but I decided against it as the urge to draw Orlam overcame me pffft!

I actually didn’t want to draw Orlam because I wanted the first drawing that I share of Orlam to be a bit more special…but hey I hope this is special enough pfffft!! I have drawn Orlam before, I’ve just never really shared the drawing. The thing is, said drawing isn’t fully completed yet. I had an idea that I’m still working on and I wanted to wait until AFTER Art Fight to actually share it 😵‍💫 it’s nothing special but for some reason I sometimes convince myself that I can be humorous so I guess my little project is to test if other people think I am 😆😆 I’m going to try to note down every first I do on Tumblr so technically…this is my first time sharing a drawing of Orlam in his doodle form!!! I thought of this Amazing Digital Circus OC, I call him Gallahad.

He's based off of traditional classic video games, like ocarina of time, final fantasy, stuff like that with quests, monsters, heroes and whatnot.

He regards himself as the self proclaimed "hero" of the circus, defender of the helpless, (because no one is crazy enough to take that gig.) and to be fair, he DOES have the power to back it up, using video game moves like sword fighting, items, magic, stuff like that, he bends to the laws of video games where he can keep insane stuff in a inventory space, never ACTUALLY die and just reload back to a save (he can get abstracted though..) and special moves to help him do stuff, he does have the cons though, like clipping into stuff, he can save whenever he wants, but it doesn't effect time, for instance, if he dies, and something happens, that will STILL happen while he isn't present, loading really just loads himself back to the last place he was, he has to deal with an annoying beeping sound when at low health, funny little stuff like that.

Pomni: ..I'm sorry, who are you again?

Gallahad: I..am GALLAHAD! At your service!

Gallahad is male (he/him), sexuality: straight.

Gallahad is one for the dramatics, getting in the character of a great hero of a legend that he made up, sometimes it can be kinda annoying to the others though, but he is a nice guy, usually checking on the others, and willing to do "quests" as he calls it for them, which is usually just little errands.

Gallahad: Kinger, are you injured!?

Kinger: Uhhh..a bit broken, yeah...

Gallahad: waitasecond.. Here, it's an ultra elixr.

-Kinger drinks it and is fully healed!-

Kinger: Woo, thanks!

Pomni: You..just have those on you?

Gallahad: ..Uh, yeah. And?

Zooble: Why didn't you use one when your arm broke earlier?

Gallahad: BeCAUSE, they don't sell ultra elixrs at SHOPS, and I only have 99999 of them! THINK, man! Ugh...

His character design has some low poly to it like a PS1 character, with a similar style to this:

He has a vintage 1990's video game filter to his voice, which he can turn off at will.

Gallahad sometimes wears a dark purple hero tunic, something like Link's, often he wears a full suit of bulky knight armor in a very dark navy like blue

He has short blond hair and striking silver eyes (not blind, just cool), and he has a skin tone like Link's.

He likes wearing masks sometimes without armor, cuz he can get nervous and bashful or scared, and he doesn't like people seeing that (even if it is obvious through how he talks) but he can go around with his face usually

He can get upset when his adventures don't go as he invisioned, not upset in a "this dude has issues" way, but in a comical "haha he's upset" way

Even when some might be annoyed by his heroic role he gives himself, Ragatha finds it charming, plus it makes him happy.

Speaking of which, he showed up in the circus a while after Ragatha did and got the hang of her life there.

His hobbies include grinding for expirence points doing "quests", earning achivements, having epic duels, laughing triumpantly, solving traditional game puzzles, training Pomni... (when she's up for it, which is rare)

And just chilling in his room playing video games for hours.

He gets along relatively with everyone.

Jax and him butt heads on occasion, but neither of them hate one another, just a fun getting on each other's nerves thing.

Gangle is a friend of his, cuz she can kinda get his whole thing, he introduces her to games based off of her animes sometimes.

His relationship with Zooble is

Gallahad: -bursts into Zooble's room as his epic theme plays- ZOOBLE! JOIN ME FOR A GLORIOUS QUEST!!!

Zooble: Get out.

Gallahad: ok. -leaves-

They appreciate that he doesn't pry though

He tries to offer advice and encouragement to Pomni, even if he doesn't really get her situation sometimes, Gallahad sees more potential in Pomni than she does in herself!

He's genuinely impressed by Kinger and thinks he's cool for surviving for so long.

He's the closest to Ragatha, cuz she's fully accepting of his whole hero thing, and she seriously helped him through some rough problems he had in the past.

Gallahad genuinely found Kaufmo to be a funny and cool guy, so...you can imagine him getting abstracted being hard on him, even if he didn't show it.

Gallahad's fine with Caine, sometimes comes to him about funny little bugs he has with his skills for him to fix, usually the most excited to do a new thing, but he doesn't entirely agree with him

Like seeing Gummigoo just get poofed away would piss him off.

Gallahad is like your typical 100% game player, meaning he's VERY powerful, he's straight up like a character in a video game with every collectible and maxed out stats.

Though his OPness is more of a detriment to him sometimes, like wanting to enjoy a boss battle but beating the boss in one hit.

He doesn't get most moments to show off his power properly anyways, and he can't even DAMAGE abstracted people.

His backstory...

Gary was an average man. With an average, boring life, in his 20s.

He always regretted not doing more crazy shit in his life, but never had the opportunity.

One day, he found his chance, to escape his boring life, and well...

He awoke a new man in The Amazing Digital Circus.

It was a long while after Ragatha joined when he arrived there.

The moment he realized the world he was in, he ran through it like CRAZY, doing extraordinary things, completing quests, defeating foes, getting stronger and stronger, having fun...

...All alone.

He never bothered interracting with anyone that wasn't an NPC, he never felt a need to.

But...at the height of his lonely glory, he...felt deprived of something.

He could never figure out what it was...

...What could it be?

To any normal person, it would have been obvious.

But Gallahad..he had no idea.

Desperately, DESPERATELY he tried to figure it out, trying to figure out just what it was, what he lacked..

It gnawed at his soul..until it began to hurt.

His hand became black as soot, it felt numb weightless, shapeless, and this black numbness was slowly rising up his body.

He did not know at the time, but...

He was getting abstracted.

He frantically went out, searching for anyone, calling for help.

And, someone answered.

It was Ragatha.

He didn't show her what was happening, because he didn't want to scare anyone, it was in a moment of weakness that he called out, but..

They started talking, he found himself opening his heart to her, finally..interacting with someone that wasn't some npc he talked to for a reward.

And before he knew it, the darkness on his body was gone.

Since then he realized what it meant to be around people, so he often tried to make sure that everyone was okay.

He was always doing his knight thing but by then he started embodying the spirit of a hero, caring about his fellow members of the circus, wanting to help them and be their friend.

Gallahad long since decided that, were he to ever escape the circus, he would STILL be the way he is now, execpt not, you know, video game like, but he would be adventurous, caring, helpful, and MAKE the life he wants to live, even changing his name to Gallahad, within the circus, he found himself.

If anyone wants to draw him, i'd be honored, just give me proper credit, okay?

Having art block sucks.

Here's some things I do to help myself work through it while still being creative:

● Play with a different brush/program then your used to. Just start doodling with it. See how it feels, see how it might influence how you handle certain lines in your work. Don't focus on mastering it, just play with it.

● Play with Colors. Google "Color Palletes" pick one that catches your eye and challenge yourself to draw with it. You could also set your work space into B/W mode and challenge yourself that way! Which could be good for working on values. Ultimately though, just focus on using the colors given in a way that feels most right for em. You don't have to have a fully rendered piece at the end. Just the specific colors.

● Play Dress Up. This ones for my oc artist! Take a character of yours and just draw up a new outfit for em. Use a base for their body if you need to, do whatever. Maybe try drawing them in something they wouldn't normally wear, or challenge yourself to include more little details then normal. Just dress em up.

● Play with Symmetry. I tend to mix this one with the dress up because it's easier to draw a fully body and outfit when you're not focusing so hard on each side being perfect. If your program has a Symmetry tool, click it on and go to town. When it's too overwhelming to draw a full face/body..draw half!

● Try a different Medium. If you normally do digital, try traditional. Or buy some cheap paints and try that. Maybe dabble in animation or clay! Sometimes your brain gets tired of doing the same old same old. So do something different for a bit to give it a small recharge. Even if it's something you've never done before. Or something you're not as good at. Any act of creation is valuable in your journey. You learn regaurdless.

● Play with a Story. Get a friend, doodle a little creature, and then pass them the canvas and ask them to give the creature a gift. After that, expand. What if you have this creature a hat? Perhaps it's at a party and needs a friend. Maybe a jealous ex appears?? Go back and forth and keep doodling on more and more of the story. Have fun with it.

● Remember, It's okay to be imperfect. Alot of artist will hammer it into you that you shouldn't have any mistakes in your work. And often times this leads to unsatisfaction, which contributes to art block. It's important to sometimes just create for the sake of creation. Let yourself doodle imperfect shapes. Let a few eyes look kinda wonky. Allow yourself and your art to not be perfect. You don't have to focus on every little detail all of the time. Breath. And just let the lines happen.

Lastly, remember that struggling with this doesn't make you less of an artist. And there will be times where the best option for you IS to step away and take a break from art all together. Again, your brain gets tired. That's not a fault in you and it doesn't make you less of an artist. Treating yourself and your creative journey with compassion is important. You're a person. And that's okay.

The World-building of Wakanda: Black Panther and Afrofuturism

I've been revisiting the Wakanda Syllabus that an educator associate of mine Dr. Walter Greason put together when the first Black Panther movie came out, and also reviewing old discussions about the significance of that era as a cultural moment and movement at the same time.

The fact that I still write Black Panther fanfics is a testement to the love I have for that fandom and its importance to Afrofuturism and Black Diaspora Futurism. I'm always happy when I see other Black writers out here still churning out plots and series fics because it is a digital archive for how we perceive a fictional future where as Killmonger once annouced "We're on top."

These works are important and specifically center the Black experience. And we don't have to fit our characters inside of white story spaces where we are usually the sidekick or fetish characters. I had an interesting talk with a friend of a friend and she wanted to argue that Black characters in the MCU who were not in the Black Panther/Wakanda Forever films should be included in the discussions of Afrofuturism, and I said they didn't belong in it fully because those characters are not centering Black people's futures. They center the non-Black white leads and their American/American adjacent interests (I'm talking about War Machine, Nick Fury, Sam Wilson, Valkyrie etc). It was a good back and forth because I am always questioning how Black people can build Black solidarity/communities by always working in white spaces in the service of white global agendas.

Writing Killmonger's journey (and his parents) for over six years (Lawd six years!!!!) with numerous books has taught me a lot about my role in preserving our fandom legacy as Black fanfiction writers and as readers. Afrofuturism has allowed me to explore not only Black Liberation, but Black Queerness, ATR's (African Traditional Religions), Black Matriarchy and Black Patriarchy. I've written about things I love and participate in, and also got to play pretend like I'm a kid again playing with my Barbie dolls and action figures. Black sex. Black music. Black art. Black philosophy. Blackety Black and unapologetic.

All this to say that I hope others out there like me keep writing and reading and reblogging these free little digital seeds we are planting that will truly blossom in the future when others discover our work. I know many Black writers lament that we don't get the same traction or BNF notoriety that white writers do. However, there is joy and divine calling when one simply sits and writes a Black Panther tale to give to other Black people for free all over the world. It still boggles my mind that there are people who have read my stories for years and they live on the other side of the world. People I will probably never meet, but they read and sometimes leave sweet comments that feed me to keep going.

any advice for starting sketches? once i have a coherent foundation it's easier for me to work on the drawing but i struggle SO BAD with actually making my initial sketch something that makes sense. when i try to start the sketch it feels like im just trying to get lucky with something i can actually work on. it's like i cant transfer what i want to see in my head to the actual work and it's insanely frustrating. it's like i can only know what i want to do when it's already there, not when nothing is there. ive been drawing for over 10 years and this is something I've never been able to change no matter how many different ways I've tried to go about this and it's why ive gone everywhere from drawing multiple times a week to not doing it at all for months/years at a time. i never want to try because the process of attempting a new sketch is so frustrating a majority of the time and i wish i could enjoy it or know why i cant get my sketches started. it's fine when i do get lucky, it's just the blank page that torments me

hmmm this is a really good question. it's something i have an easier time with digitally than traditionally, somehow -- like, i can't tell you how many stacks of paper i have sitting around that are full of, like, 20% of a floating head because i keep getting that far on starting something and then deciding i hate it, vs with digital sketches i do still often scrap/give up on sketches very early but somehow there's less friction irt just making a new layer and trying again, over and over pretty quickly. maybe it's that digital feels faster + more ephemeral, vs w traditional i'm faced more confrontationally with the paper i'm "wasting," etc

also i think just like. "what's in my head will not show up on the paper" is just the universal problem forever, it's the tide we're always swimming against and we'll go through waves where it feels more or less true depending on the current development of our technical skill vs our critical eye, but i don't think it ever fully goes away

this is just what's true for me but if it always feels like you're just trying to get lucky, the fastest brute force solution for that is leaning into quantity, imo. draw a LOT, draw FAST, and -- easier said than done, but -- try your best not to CARE if they look bad. even in the shittiest drawing there is often something you can salvage for later. i can't remember where i saw it but i once saw it said that drawing is like a clogged pipe -- there's a bunch of shitty drawings stuck in there and you have to get those all OUT before you can expect the real stuff behind it to start flowing

lower the stakes, in whatever way you can. in my experience, it's not that drawing itself is really that hard or taxing -- it's that the emotional toll of doing drawings and then not being happy with them is hard, it's disappointment and being down on yourself that's hard. if we do our best to strip away all the emotional baggage, that's that part that can actually make art so grueling and difficult to keep up with imo. so try the best u can to just make it, like... not that serious. remind yourself over and over again that there's nothing actually wrong with making drawings you're not satisfied with. it's not doing anything bad to anyone. i literally mumble it to myself sometimes -- when a drawing is coming out shitty or i just can't get where i want to be on an illustration i say to myself "it's okay, that's fine" and try to pump the brakes on the negative thoughts before "ugh, that's not what i wanted" somehow internally transforms into "you SUCK and you're a HACK and there's no point to ANY OF THIS!!!!" lol

in terms of more concrete stuff to try -- one of my fav exercises to loosen up is song sketches. i put a huge playlist (usually like literally all my music, i have it all in a folder on spotify) on shuffle and then draw a bunch of quick sketches only for the duration of each song, and usually trying to match the drawing to whatever the song makes me think of -- so if it's a 2 minute song, i literally only have 2 minutes. if i hit some 7 minute club edit, then great, i have 7 minutes to bang out something slightly more polished. depending on how fast you're used to working, you may find that at first you struggle to get ANYTHING coherent down in 2-3 minutes -- that's OKAY!!! another point of this exercise is to acclimate yourself to making unfinished, incoherent, dogshit drawings without it being a big deal. the point is that if you're limiting yourself this much (in terms of actual drawing time AND in terms of not being able to overthink/plan, you have to hear the start of the song and decide what ur gonna draw IMMEDIATELY), you will end up churning out a lot more drawings without individually agonizing over each one as much, and there WILL be something salvageable in the pile.

Smudge Happiness Chapter 2

Authors Note: so basically I started this fan fiction years ago, but stopped writing due to everyday stresses. I still never fully let go of this story though, and I always wanted to do it. It’s a darker take on the classical high school trope.

I feel like the true gen z high school experience never got shown truly accurate in media. They either went way over board, like Euphoria, or they were this kinda cringe middle ground, like Ginny and Georgia. Although it’s just a silly fan fiction with gross exagerations, I truly want to show an accurate portrayal about what it was like growing up as teenager in the later 2010s. At least for a suburban middle class.

Lucy is mostly the main character, but a lot of this story is told through the point of view of many different characters. Simultaneous stories happen at the same time, and sometimes a scene is told twice from different povs. All discrepancies are intentional as everyone is an unreliable narrator.

Natsu was not having the best night. While all his friends spent the summer relaxing, building their resumes, and traveling abroad, Natsu worked twelve hour shifts lifting heavy concrete to help make ends meet. His father, Igneel, could never hold a job, the damn drunk that he was. Natsu cursed at the thought of his name. It was almost a yearly tradition, right before school let out, his father conveniently loses his job, leaving Natsu and his older brother Zeref to provide for their twelve year old sister, Wendy. While Natsu spent his time lifting concrete at a construction site, genius Zeref made double his pay tutoring kids for the SAT.

It was the night before the start of his freshman year and he was wide awake seething with anger. Igneel had come home again from the bar drunk and raging. Natsu had come home from his last day of exhausting work to see Wendy crying in a corner and Zeref screaming at his father while Mavis sat there, quietly looking down. God the things that girl know about my family Natsu thought.

After realizing he would get sleep until he calmed his fury, Natsu sat up in his old creaky bed he had since he was a toddler. He grabbed his phone and texted Lucy:

Ready for school tomorrow?

He looked at the red number on his old digital clock. Lucy definitely was not awake. Natsu tossed his phone on his bed and creaked open his door. He approached an old wooden door that was cracked slightly, as Igneel had slammed it and broken it in his rage. He heard quiet sobs coming from the room.

"Wendy?"

Wendy looked up at Natsu and quickly wiped her tears.

"Ah Natsu! Ready for school tomorrow? I already have my outfit picked out!" she said smiling.

Wendy had picked out a light purple top she clearly carefully ironed. There was stitching on the top from where Wendy had patched a hole. She also had picked out a white skirt that had a not so noticeable stain on it. He remembered what Lucy had told him, the only thing on a middle school girl's mind is their appearance.

"Cmon Wendy I got some extra change, lets go get you a new outfit"

"Natsu, it's two in the morning, nowhere is open. Besides, it's fine. Putting food on the table is more important than a new outfit, ya know?"

Natsu sighed and nodded. It pained him how mature and fast she grew up. Sometimes it almost felt like she was more mature than him.

"Good night Wendy, have Zeref drive you tomorrow," Natsu said leaving her room.

So one of the coolest bits of animanga ephemera that I own is probably these two volumes of the Epic Comics printing of AKIRA.

In 1988, American comics publishers were starting to take notice of the growing popularity of Japanese animation, and Marvel wanted a slice of the pie. A few years earlier, they had made the Epic Comics imprint to run more adult stories free of Comics Code censorship, including both standalone titles and non-canonical spinoffs of their more popular characters. The fledgling imprint seemed like the perfect place for a slice of that cool, weird Japanamation pie. They set their sights on Katsuhiro Otomo's AKIRA, which had done well in Japan and was set to get film adaptation that year. The editor of Epic at the time felt that the disaffected youth, psychic powers, and post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting would be familiar enough touch points to make the series resonate with American readers.

However, Epic didn't think that American comics readers would be as drawn to something that read "backwards" and was black and white. So, they did what would become the standard for many years- they flipped the pages to read left-to-right. They then enlisted colorist Steve Oliff to create a full-color version of AKIRA. While it's easy to jump to thinking of this as a butchering of the original work, Otomo was actually fully on board, as he wanted his work to reach as many people as possible. Otomo collaborated with Oliff directly at first, flying out to meet with him and share some of his personal desires for the coloring. He had some initial color guides, stills from the as-of-yet unreleased movie, and a deep passion and desire for his work to do well in the west. For the first five or six issues, Oliff sent all of his colorings off to Otomo for approval, but after that, Otomo was pleased enough that he gave Oliff free reign to go with his instincts for the rest of the comic's run. The colored version was even re-licensed, flipped back to the Japanese order, and released in Japan! I've never seen any copies of that, but I bet it's cool as hell!

I got these as a Christmas present sometime in the mid '00s from my Aunt Ing and Uncle David, who knew I liked anime and manga, but knew absolutely nothing about the stuff. They picked them up at a garage sale in DC for pocket change, and gave them to me along with a second hand copy of the DEVILMAN live action movie from 2004. I clearly remember them saying something along the lines of "Here, I hope you like this! We know you like that manga stuff. Hopefully 'Akira' isn't Japanese for like hardcore donkey porn or something, hahaha!" ...As if you couldn't flip the book open and see what was in it for yourself, Uncle David?

(Also worth noting that I had already seen the Akira movie at this point, so it's not like I didn't know what I was getting into!)

The manga (and the not-long-after release of the anime) made AKIRA a hit in the states. The Epic Comics run split the series into 38 issues that ran from 1988 to 1994. However, the legacy of Epic's colored run has an influence outside of just helping to introduce this iconic series to American readers.

It was also one of the first digitally colored comics.

Oliff and his company, Olyopitcs, were pioneers in using digital coloring methods. While he made initial color guides on paper versions of the pages using traditional methods like pantone films and paint, the finalized versions were all colored digitally, allowing for a wide, rich range of colors. This style of coloring incentivized Marvel to print it on slightly higher quality paper, and the series' success made Marvel more interested in looking to computers as a way to enhance their art and workflow. Perhaps he overstates it a bit, but Oliff credits his Eisner award-winning run as the colorist for AKIRA as the turning point for digital art's acceptance in comics.

It's unlikely that the colored version of AKIRA will ever be re-released, as the rights that Marvel held have LONG since traded hands, first to Dark Horse and then back to Kodansha. Copies of the colored version of AKIRA are hard to come by and pricy now, ranging from $10-100 for a single issue on eBay depending on condition and what particular issue it is (climactic issues are obviously more expensive than more laid back ones). It's not completely out of the question that it'll see the light of day again, however; Oliff still has all the digital files of the colored version of AKIRA, and he has expressed that he would be more than happy to have them reprinted if Kodansha wished to.

If not, though, I still have my two issues, and a very cool piece of anime localization history.

Oh my gosh thank you, you're so sweet! I can answer all of that in a convoluted little tutorial I shall give now without anyone asking~

I use Autodesk Sketchbook for Windows, as it is free and versatile enough for a digital art babychild like me to adapt. Here's a basic run-through of my work process:

Sketching:

As a self-employed rule, lineart is fucking dead to me and I'll never use it because it'll always show off my shaky hand and blase drawing style as less of a quirk and more of a deficiency. Sketching however is my best friend in the whole world and I'll usually use a thin rough pencil brush (see above) to keep a traditional look about it. I'm oldschool what can I say.

Colouring:

Although for the example work I actually dove right into building tones without adhering to my usual system, I always use the stock paintbrush to fill in the form. Call me a troglodyte because I certainly am one, but hey it gets the job done, and I can always have fun later with the groovier brushes.

Now this is my favourite part, making the form look less like an unevolved slime worm was here, by utilizing the super ultra groovy brushes, like my favourite two shown here (and usually the only two I'll bother with). The Synthetic flat bristle brush I use as a substitute for the blending tool (another one I heavily depend on in the stock brush phase), because it makes the work look less manufactured and more real, like a real life human did it. Typically, I use it for hair and clothes, but sometimes skin too, when I want it looking raw.

And the rake brush! Not a single work of mine will be without it, I'm fully obsessed, and I'll use it wherever I can get away with. It looks fantastic with hair and using it as a soft highlight.

Editing:

Actually I lied, THIS is my favourite phase. Editing baby!

Although a brush isn't involved in this stage I'll mention it anyway to shout out Photopea, which is a free online photoshop substitute with nearly all of the same features, without that hefty pricetag. I use it to enhance or muck around with colours and tones, or sometimes just for ideas. It's goddamn brilliant and I couldn't recommend it enough.

Finalising:

After playing around with values and tones, I can go back to sketchbook and finalise my work, adding anything it needs before I put my pen down and say enough. Sometimes the process is helpful because I can take a break, look back, and see elements I need to fix and improve that I didn't see before, and huzzah! She's complete!

Anywho I hope you found my drabble helpful, and someone please help me find the torrent to procreate for windows because goddamn I wanna try it so fucking bad. But not enough to let the fly out of my wallet, it's currently the only thing in it XD.

To answer your first question; tbh it can take anywhere from two hours to a week (and a half) to complete a fully rendered piece, it really depends if I have the motivation or if life gets in the way!

The most frustration for me personally has got to be the sketching/concept part of the process. My mind tends to jump from idea to the next pretty fast, and sometimes choosing a pose or a color scheme for a final piece is horrible for my psyche😭 (on the contraire, sometimes pieces appear in my mind with horrifying clarity like an eldritch being trying to send me visions, and spoiler alter: those are usually the pieces I get done in 2-4 hours) 

How I deal with art block? Hehe. Hehehee. Uhmm. Idk really either sometimes :D

Usually when I’m struggling with digital art, I’ll switch myself over to doing art on paper or canvas (I do transitional art too! I just never post it) and the flip-flopping of mediums usually gets my brain in the flow again! (Ill also do the vice-versa for when I’m struggling with traditional too!!)

Also for art block, usually when I find that my mind is tripping over itself trying to get back into the flow, or stuck stagnant and feeing like a can’t form a proper thought: I’ll usually just do something that exercises a different part of my brain, like listening to music, watching a show/movie, or (for me personally) cooking seems to get me in the artist mood! (I also get a tasty treat ouf of it too hehe)

Also don’t ever apologize for questions! I love having people be curious, and I love answering them, I just hope I haven’t ranted too much😅

Additionally- I don’t think I will be doing artfight this year sadly :( I have a lot going on at the moment, and I have done any of the preparations needed😭 though I hope for next year!

Smart Classroom? Digital Classroom? 1980 Vs Now

What is a Smart Classroom / Digital Classroom?

When technology is introduced in the classroom it is called technology-enabled education or education using digital Aids.

I am an 80’s Kid. I grew up in a traditional chalk and blackboard environment and being a topper of class, I was forced to sit in the first lane taking all the chalk dust onto my face and uniform. Of course, this does not have to do with this context, just I wanted you to remember that I grew up in the traditional education system.

English and Telugu were okay, but when biology, physics, and chemistry were taught it was a fun time for us. Because our teacher used to draw a diagram and she used to take 15 minutes and our class was 40 minutes duration. After drawing she could get only 25 minutes times to explain.

While the teacher was drawing on the board, we were busy with our in-door and on-bench games. Similarly, the same scene for physics and chemistry classes. Ample time used to go waste in the drawing.

Visual Learning’s Challenges in Traditional Education

Many times, we could not visualize what the teacher explained. Sometimes it was very difficult to remember too. Somehow we passed out and if you ask me, I don’t remember anything I learnt that time as it was never registered in my brain.

But, I can tell the story of Nagarjuna’s Shiva or Chiranjeevi's Gang Leader Movie story, fully even though I saw it almost 25 years back.

So, is this because I lack interest in education? and interest in movies?

The answer is NO. Even though I had an interest in education, my brain did not register the subject. My brain registered only English or Telugu subjects as I didn’t need to visualize anything. In the case of biology, and physical science, I need a lot of visuals to register which was missing in those days.

This was not the latest statement; it was discovered 50 years ago. However, due to the non-availability of technology, our teachers used to physically draw the maps.

Also ik you're probably very busy but have you detailed the process for turning your traditional art into a format you can edit and post digitally anywhere? How do you do that :0

Hi!! doin ok today <3 ty for asking :)

I actually haven't tried explaining that before but I'm gonna try now!

(The fun part is how I never know what the final layouts gonna be like until the very end, its like a mysterious puzzle )

For starters I always do this process on procreate on my iPad, its just the most convenient to me.

1) Photograph your drawings! Aim for even lighting and get close enough to the drawings so that you wont have to crop in and lower the quality.

2) I then import all the photos of my drawings that I plan to compile into the procreate document - take this guy, here's what his base photo looks like:

3) Then - one at at time using the selection tool : automatic I select the outer page color and drag back and forth till the selection is something that preserves my lines but also retains some of the paper too ! Because i have a lot of broken lines in my work its really fun to see what happens with this.

4) Then! if the lighting was not the most ideal in my original photo, (if the papers too dark or the lines aren't dark enough) I go into curves and mess around a little bit until I like the contrast. :)

Then! i just play around and see if the drawings I wanna include fit together - sometimes to make sure they flow I might digitally draw in something like an arm.

Bonus: Occasionally I might wanna spice up the composition a little further so ... On a new layer fully filled with the paintbucket tool, ill then mess around with blending modes, often landing on either Overlay or Vivid Light to tint everything.

Final touch: just in my own preference, I like to add a little border :)
