For those who don't believe this is true, I can absolutely promise you it is. You might think, "Oh it'll never happen to me! I'm a safe driver!"

But if you're on your fucking phone while driving, you're not a safe driver. If it's an emergency, pull over and do shit while the vehicle is parked. If it's not an emergency it can and will wait until you're parked.

Don't be a fucking idiot and use your phone while you drive.

When I was a teen, my aunt hired a girl of 20 years old to work on her farm in rural Pennsylvania. That girl was driving one day while texting, and got into a horrible accident that left her needing countless surgeries, all her teeth removed, pins put in both arms, and she, as far as I'm aware all these years later, is still recovering. It's been a decade, and last I heard the girl was living on disability in a wheelchair, unable to work. And because of disability laws she cannot ever marry if she wants to, and she cannot ever live with someone who isn't her caretaker or else she'll have her disability pay revoked.

My childhood friend was riding a motorcycle out in Pennsylvania. Some fucker was on their phone and hit him. He was 21 years old, and left paralyzed and in a near-vegetative state for a while. He was perfectly fine, bright, happy, and loving for so many years. And now he's stuck for life unable to walk ever again, and had to be in rehab for months so he could gain movement in his hands enough to use an electric wheelchair.

I went to school with a guy, sweetest dude, and I knew him from choir classes. He was also riding a motorcycle shortly after graduating. He was 19 years old. The dude who hit him was on a cell phone, and killed my choir buddy. He's fucking dead. At 19. And it's been years and I'm still not over it.

I can go ON about these stories. People who've both been on phones and caused the accident, or those who were victims of folks that used their phones and hit them. But these people were young. They're literal children some of them. And because folks used cell phones while driving, they're either fucked for life or they're dead.

It doesn't matter how old or young you are, it doesn't matter how long you've been driving, and it doesn't fucking matter what you think about your multitasking skills or your ability to text and drive.

DON'T! FUCKING! USE! A! PHONE! AND! DRIVE!!!!!

Death has no discrimination. It will claim you and others regardless of age. Don't get yourself and others killed young.

It just kinda hit me that Mika’s story comes full circle at the end. First episode, he was sent out to die while his shitty commanders can retreat (before Orga uno-reverse betrays them), only to die while fighting when the rest of Tekkadan retreats. But you look at what Tekkadan has become.

Orga ousted the old management of CGS in order to prevent them from sending the kids under his command into high risk scenarios, only for Orga himself putting them into those scenarios as time went on. Orga would join forces with McGillis in order to become “king of Mars” without even knowing what the plan was, and just before he died he realized he should have focused on getting his men to their happy ending SAFELY rather than ASAP.It was this same “get there quick” attitude that alienated Tekkadan from the rest of the mafia organization they joined and got Naze killed. Orga also keep recruiting kids, telling them they could leave if they wanted to while ignoring that most of them are escaping crushing poverty just like Orga did. The reasons why kids say they join up is a list of push factors for child soldier recruitment, why the UN views it as an act of exploitation rather than the benevolence IBO paints it as. 

Combine this with Mikazuki’s own arc. The kid had his own dreams and ambitions, and in the first season would take the initiative into pursuing them when offered. Pay attention to him in the second season and he’s stopped doing that. His studies have fallen behind despite not having anything else to do on base due to his disabilities, and is less enthusiastic about going to the Sakura farm. When he’s unable to pursue them anymore, he’s happy because he viewed them as an unwanted distraction from helping Orga. Meanwhile, Barbatos becomes more monstrous looking while Mikazuki focuses on something else he finds enjoyment in. Killing.

Combine this with Akihiro’s arc where he tosses aside mercy and begins killing kids. Combine this with Shino going from calling out hail Mary’s as suicide and questioning who would do such a thing to him doing such a thing and dying. Add Eugene going from someone who is antagonistic to Orga and his leadership to saying he goes along with what Orga says because it makes things easier for Orga. Or Biscuit, originally joining CGS to provide for his family only to put Tekkadan above them. Twice, and each time his sisters lost a brother.

Mikazuki holding the line stops being this heroic last stand because of what he’s trying to protect. He and his friends lived long enough to se themselves become the villains, and he’s just following the last orders Orga gave him.

Your gaze was perpetually on the man in front of your desk, intently watching as he was staring almost blankly at his desk as if the most interesting thing in the world was there, and even though Dwight would normally act in a very strange way around you, God knows why, you couldn't help but worry because earlier that morning he had been in an accident with his car when he had gone to pick Michael up from his house after burning his foot.

Speaking of the king of Rome.

Since he had arrived at the office it had been almost a martyrdom for everyone to have to be working under the watchful eye of Michael so that they would pay attention to him and thus appear that he was disabled when he only had a couple of blisters that with proper treatment they would eventually be taken away from him but, having Pam behind him all the time because of his childish way of acting, made the job even more boring for you and Jim as you usually spent part of your breaks with her although you had heard from the receptionist how it seemed that Dwight had become more calm and friendly by offering to do certain things that he usually wouldn't do.

"Yeah, baby! I am feeling better," Michael spoke, leaving his office on one leg with two crutches that helped him hold on correctly, "my body's literally healing himself. It's amazing what the human body is capable of when you have a powerful brain," he commented, trying to look superior or exaggerate his situation even more. "Oh, I finally feel the blood coursing through my foot veins."

Suddenly, a thud made everyone turn their eyes towards Dwight, who had his head resting on the side of the desk, so you and Jim suddenly got up from your seats to be able to put him upright.

"Okay, I think we need to take him to the hospital," Jim murmured, "I'm pretty sure he has a concussion."

"Oh, now you feel some compassion for him," Michael complained as he saw everyone's concern in someone who wasn't him.

"He's got a concussion. Do you think we're not going to worry about him?" You asked, almost surprised by the stupidity he had just said. "Also, you should take him. You're his emergency contact number."

"And why don't you go? You're his girlfriend," your boss said, making you sigh.

As much as it hurts you, and even though you had been together for more than three years, Dwight had kept some aspects of his life away from you, such as working on the farm, going to the doctor or going to Christmas parties and, even though it bothered you many times, you knew you couldn't do anything to change it.

He didn't want to burden you with farm work, getting up at dawn to milk a goat? He did it. Collect the eggs from the chickens? That's what he and Mose were for; you didn't have to get involved in those matters. He didn't want to burden you with something that I didn't suppose interested you at all.

The Christmas parties were another matter because the whole Schrute family would gather at the farm to celebrate their traditions and if he took you, it was more than clear that in a very short time, they would want to make you Mrs Dwight. They would want a wedding as soon as possible and he didn't want to submit to the pressure of being married to him.

Finally, the doctors. It is not that he went to the consultation many times, even sometimes he avoided the annual ones, but since he did not want to worry you if something was wrong with him, so he didn't tell you anything about his check-ups or consultations when he had to go, hence Michael was his emergency contact and not you.

Of course, he hadn't told you all this, and you couldn't imagine it either, you just thought that maybe it was too soon or that maybe he wasn't at the same level of the relationship as you.

He did everything for you, he already knew your parents and all your medical history, you just didn't understand why you couldn't know anything about him.

"I want Michael to take me, please?" Dwight asked, looking desperately at his boss.

"I can't take you, I don't have my car and yours is with the vomity," the man excused himself.

Meredith kindly offered her van and, at request, you asked Jim to take the three of you to the hospital since if you went alone with those two men you might have an accident on the way.

Michael was too childish, he would want to ride in the passenger seat no matter what, and Dwight with his shock was quite clear that it would be like taking care of a small child.

Jim very kindly agreed to help you get to the hospital.

"Come on, Dwight, we're leaving," you murmured once Halpert had led him to the sofa in the office, gently taking his arm before slowly lifting him so he wouldn't get dizzy.

"It smells like chicken soup," Dwight whispered as he walked past you toward the office door. "I have to go to the hospital."

"Here we go, honey," you said as you crossed the threshold. "We'll just go away for a bit and in no time we'll be back in the office together and everything will be back to normal, okay?"

"But I'll be back," he murmured looking at you, to which you smiled sweetly at him.

"Yes, but it won't be the same without you," you affirmed, seeing how he separated a little with a slight frown. "This office only has its spark if you are in it, you are the light that illuminates it every day."

"Oh, sweetheart, you're adorable," he murmured fondly as he gently touched the tip of your nose.

You quickly kissed his lips, barely a touch, before making your way to the elevator where Michael and Jim were waiting for you.

You, somewhat reluctantly and with Jim's help, kept Dwight on his feet in the elevator and then carried him to the parking lot where all the office staff cars were, seeing Meredith's van right out of the building, so it didn't take too long to get to the car and get Dwight into one of the back seats.

Lucky that you had asked Jim to go with you, to drive more specifically, because Michael didn't care about your partner's situation when he said "shotgun!" to be the co-driver and got in the front seat. You had no problem going in the back with Dwight, but you knew very well that he would listen to Michael more than you.

Although, to your surprise, it was not.

He was pretty quiet while you were next to him, to the point where he stayed up having a conversation with you that didn't even make sense, but he was hugely entertaining.

Goofing off with a "sick" Dwight was too much fun.

"I do it well? I'm behaving well?" he asked as he rested his chin on your shoulder, staring at you.

"You're behaving wonderfully, honey," you replied with a small smile as you turned your head so you could look him in the eye. "You're the best."

"No, you," he denied giggling, stealing a kiss, listening to Michael's complaints in the background. "Why does he make that noise?"

"Because he's jealous that you have a girlfriend," you answered, placing your right hand on his neck, giving him soft caresses that made him turn his attention to you.

It wasn't to throw you flowers, far from it, but Dwight couldn't ask for a better girlfriend than you.

Although the trip was calm, your concern persisted even in the clinic, more specifically in the emergency room, because Schrute stopped looking at you the moment he stepped into the waiting room to start looking in different directions for no apparent reason as if he were gone from the real world, while Michael spoke to him sometimes, Jim tried to keep him awake by pouring a little water on his face and you were in charge of filling out the form that they had offered you once the four of you had entered together.

Little did you know what happened once you had turned in the form and Michael, being Dwight's emergency contact, allowed him to go in to do the first check and find out how serious the blow had been while you stayed in the waiting room with Jim, who watched you carefully while your leg bounced over and over again because of the nerves you were going through and not being able to be there for him.

Your anxiety increased by the minute and it didn't help that you had to wait outside.

"You know he's going to be fine, right?" Jim questioned placing his hand on your knee to try to calm you down.

"Neither you nor I know, he hit his head very hard, I should have noticed it before," you murmured, biting your lower lip later.

"You didn't know, (Y/N), it's not your fault," your partner calmed you down. "You don't have to keep an eye on him all day, he probably didn't want to worry you."

"He never lets me help out on his farm, I haven't met his family yet except for Mose, and he never lets me know about the doctors," you commented. "I'm not saying that he must tell me everything about his life, but I feel like he's not on the same page as me. For God's sake, he has Michael as his emergency contact instead of me."

Jim, seeing you as bad as you seemed to be, didn't know exactly what to say, but the fact that Michael showed up half an hour later in the waiting room with his two crutches made you even more upset with the fear that something might happen to Dwight or that whatever was on his mind that had made him feel so bad was something much worse than it could have been in the first place.

"It's fine? Is something wrong?" You asked quickly, being followed by Jim once he saw you get up from your seat and take several steps towards your boss.

"They'll just do a cat scan," Michael spoke, taking a seat in the chair next to yours.

"And you won't be there with him?" You questioned a little more upset, it could be said that even pissed off.

"I can't go in with him if he wants you to go."

You glanced at Jim momentarily before running to the door Michael had exited earlier, only to find one of the many nurses standing in a section of the hallway next to Dwight, who was sitting in a wheelchair to not fall to the floor as long as he couldn't stand up from the shock.

Dwight looked at you with a small smile that widened by the moment as he watched you walk towards him, listening in the background to the nurse who accompanied him saying that you couldn't wear any kind of metal object while they were going to do the tests, so you looked to the camera crew while removing the various devices that were hooked to your clothing to pick up your voice and handing them back, later entering the room with Dwight where they would test him.

The nurse, with the help of a second worker, placed Schrute on the stretcher that had the machine, leaving the two of you alone once they were going to prepare the hulk for the test.

"How come you changed your mind so quickly?" You asked looking at him, smiling slightly in his direction. "Had Michael refused to go in with you?"

"I needed you," he murmured, "you're my emergency contact after all and you're my girlfriend."

Suddenly you felt your heart pumping hard and fast, while your cheeks gradually turned red until you almost looked like a small tomato.

With that statement all doubt you had regarding the relationship you had suddenly disappeared.

"Well, here I am and in no time we'll be back home, you'll see," you encouraged him by holding his hand once you heard the nurse say through the loudspeakers that they were going to start. "Everything will be fine, Dwight."

"I know, I'm with you."

The man's hand came up slightly to take yours, allowing him to hold it so that he would be calmer and relaxed, and although he couldn't see it, you had a bright smile that showed how you were the happiest woman in the whole world.

I need to share with you all an Ask a Manager letter from a person working at what seems to be a costume/prop store and is irritated by what horror nerds their coworkers are. I am actually sympathetic to a certain extent (everyone endlessly repeating movie quotes would get old even if I like the movies) but it raises many questions.

I live in a small city which doesn’t have many employment opportunities. The city has a high unemployment rate, and it’s rare to find work that isn’t in shops, farming, etc. Six years ago, the city council launched a project to fund start-up business ideas for marginalized individuals, including those with disabilities.

One of these ideas has become extremely successful. It’s essentially four neurodivergent eccentrics who live every day like it’s Halloween. They are commissioned by various organizations around the state to create bespoke services and goods. They’ve attracted something of a following with projects coming in all year in preparation for October. Jobs include making props for a small amusement park, making decor for a children’s hospital, local authorities hiring them to run haunted houses, etc. Because it has council funding, the start-up needs a couple of additional employees for administration. I accepted one of these admin roles as there are so few office-based jobs in the area.

I have worked there for two years and I feel like I’m in some sort of alternative reality. The office is filled with robotics, costumes, and prop projects. I’ve kept my complaints to what I thought was minimal, but the number of official logged complaints about the four people is in double digits. As an example, one was about a ruined handbag that had been seized as a prop and filled with jelly and rubber eyeballs. The other admin worker isn’t helpful — he has multiple Halloween-themed tattoos and named his kids in obvious tribute (think names like Casper, Salem etc.).

The entire city sees the team as underdog heroes and they really are involved in worthwhile projects. I appreciate that they probably have been excluded through their lives and have finally found an opportunity to form a community and work in a field they love. But my nerves are in shreds with the constant screams and cackles emitted from every corner of a small office. The latest is a wildlife charity wanting to put nesting boxes for actual BATS! in the office. They’re paying for it as a promotional/marketing service, with the resident ghouls blogging about and videoing the bats. Am I nuts, or is this completely bizarre?

After I submitted a complaint about the plans to move bats in, the local newspaper ran a massive double spread about the Halloween grinch trying to destroy this deeply loved community enterprise. They took the stance that I am some stuffy busybody ruining disabled people’s opportunities to shine and create joy and community spirit. I wasn’t named in the article but it was obvious to locals who the villain was.

Quitting means I’d be signing up for many years in a manual or service job in a city where everyone hates me. My son is counting down the days until he can legally change his name so he won’t be recognized. I had minor surgery last year and the week off felt like the first time in two years I could breathe.

As I’m writing this to you, my coworkers are bellowing out lines from films at each other repetitively, then identifying them. Here’s a sample:

A : What an excellent day for an exorcism! J: The Exorcist, 1973!

T: Listen to them, children of the night! J : Dracula, 1931!

The advice given is basically “If you work at a Halloween place they’re going to be into Halloween, you just have to decide if you can stand it or not.” But questions people in the comments are raising are:

1. Was that “ruined purse” something that belonged to someone and coworkers filled with jelly, or was it a discarded item that they repurposed into a prop?

2. Putting bats in the office? Really? A real charity wants to do that? Or is this hyperbole for putting bat boxes outside?

3. Were those “double digits” of complaints from different people, or all from the letter writer?

4. Are all these details just changed to avoid identifying anyone, and is this really a Christmas prop place?

I live 600 metres away from my grocery store. Is that a bus stop? I don't live in a city, but that's about a bus stop, probably, right?

If I need to buy water (because I refuse to drink our tap water, small town, rural area, don't drink yellow water) or potatoes or laundry soap or anything heavy, really, I pay someone to drive me from the grocery store to my house. I can't carry any of that 600 metres. I don't even carry it from the grocery store. I put it in the cart and push it out and generally have a person helping with that.

Are they gonna let me take a cart to the bus stop? Who's taking it back? Do I have to buy my own? I can't lift it on and off of the bus myself if it's heavy which would be the point - does that mean the bus driver has to? What if they're disabled? Do we not allow bus drivers with bad backs now?

Like I would love to have public transport (again, small town, rural area, we don't really have that). I would THRIVE in a city, honestly. And I'm not on the same track as OP but like.

Some of you really don't think about disabled people much.

Also like, we have a place that's like 15km away. It has about 700 people living there. There's like 3 businesses. That's not enough to have jobs for 700 people. Not of them drive. You know what some of them do? Walk. Do you know how long a 15km walk takes? About 3 hours, generally. On a highway. There's nothing between us but highway and fields from farms.

3 hours. One way. Even when it's -40C.

What bus is gonna work for that? Are they gonna drive one person every hour because not everyone work at the same time? That's just a big, inefficient car at that point.

What's the public transport solution for that?

The anti-car culture on this website is so fucking annoying. Like, sorry I want to be able to get around without having to spend two hours taking three buses. Sorry I want to be able to go grocery shopping in the winter without having to lug heavy bags home through the snow on a fucking bike

People get genuinely shocked that I know so much about Capitalism in an "Inside Business" kind of way. Since I'm a rabid communist and all...

Let me break this down: the white side of my family were high ranking members of the VoC and the subsequent government of the Dutch East Indies, which is arguably the first literal "Mega-Corporate Government" (Whose neo-colonialist descendants would in no uncertain terms, put me in the ground if they could get away with it.)

Meanwhile, I was a fucking child farm-labourer breaking my body for less than minimum wage. I was watching as farm-after-farm got bought out by corporate agriculture, while my Agro-Economics classes in middle school claimed being a small-time farmer was a viable career choice!

I watched mainstreets dry up, the local grocery store go under because a WalMart opened up 20 some miles away! Then I saw rich Californians swoop in and buy up those failed buisinesses for their yoga studios, while refusing to interact with the former residents of the region.

Then I watched those hipster-businesses die every year because THE ENTIRE THING CAME DOWN TO TAX BULLSHIT. An entire mainstreet turned into unviable boutiques for the singular purpose of keeping prices too high for the local community and ultimately serving as nothing more than tax write-offs.

I read analysis of capialism and it's contradictions in my spare time. Literally the reason it's called "Das Kapital" is because it's an analysis of Capitalism which comes to the conclusion it's dogshit.

My first proper job after high school was in capital gains tax, where I was also an accountant in charge of payroll. A job which had me regularly doing straight up illegal shit (On both sides of my job) because THAT WAS THE NORM.

I watched people in that company go weeks with delayed pay, people getting their hours rounded down for being 5 minutes late or early. I watched people working without adaquate water, a guy with autism in IT getting a low wage despite being the single force keeping the entire company running! I WAS PUNISHED FOR FOLLOWING THE LAWS AND GETTING PEOPLE THEIR PAY ON TIME.

I was a disabled homeless person living on the street in an unfamiliar town, learning firsthand how it's impossible to get ANYTHING without an address. You can't even get a P.O. Box to use as a temporary address while you apply for aid!

Years later I watched a homeless man cry because I handed him a $100 because I KNEW what it was like to be on the streets. And to this day whenever I give homeless people what I can, I get lectured about how #TheyAreJustGoingToBuyDrugs.

Even people who considered themselve charitable, religious people who would preach about that, you can still see any empathy they have for other people vanish from their eyes the moment they spot someone on the street. (And if the person is black, you get to watch well-to-do white women literally run away sometimes!)

Immersion in a hyper-capitalist context only proved to me - from direct personal experience - that this system is fucking evil and the nemesis of life itself. You don't survive in Business if you have a heart.

Anyone who comes to the conclusion I just #DontUnderstandCapitalism can get stuffed.

Mostly I've listed attitudes/mindsets you may want to adopt to a certain degree, depending on your circumstances and beliefs. Anyone can add if they have good advice, but essentially 'get rid of animal ag' ain't it.

Don't generalize and try to look for nuance, especially coming from the locals/experts. Influencers aren't experts. It'd be lovely if more of us try to let rural communities make their own decisions and don't talk over them. That includes online posts.

Instead of always looking for new answers, look for older ones as well. There is a reason many traditions have become traditions. As you lose them through modernization you lose generational knowledge. Not a call for bigotry in case that's not clear.

Agriculture is different in each case. Don't try to make one solution fit every case or judge them if they don't. Hating animal agriculture is one thing, but when you want to get rid of it you include indigenous people, poor people, etc. There is a reason these people continue to do it that way and they know better than you why.

If you have the time/opportunity try to help out on a farm for a while, especially during harvest, feel free to do so. It's a great way to learn, get into conversation with farmers and the community (think about all the people you meet on the way, those working in the small shops you might need to go into to grab a snack etc), and make connections.

Look up CSA farms in your area. Community Supported Agriculture. I don't know how it works elsewhere but where I live we come together as a group, pick a farm, and get into an agreement with them to have an exclusive relationship as consumers with that farm. That means we as a community are their sole customers, but we agree to financially back the farm on a yearly basis (or 6 months and so on, each agreement can be different). So we agree on a price and pay that even if there is no produce/products yet. We don't have to pay every single time we get food, can make requests to grow certain cultures or apply certain practices, and can also frequently visit the farm. If the harvest is extra good that year, we don't have to pay more. In return the farmer is financially insured against stuff like a few years of bad harvest or issues with livestock, can get additional funding for expanding their operation etc. It's oversimplified here, and there are varieties so if you like to learn more about the german model you can look for SoLaWi (Solidarische Landwirtschaft). In my case farmers drive their stuff into the city for us on specific days and in locations close to your neighbourhood and hand you a box with what you want.

Don't talk over people in their own field. Don't go into the field with the intentions of a missionairy. You wouldn't try to teach a virologist about Covid. I hope. Even if you have reason to believe that person is wrong about the point they make, don't try to disprove it, that's the job of other people of the field. And they already make sure to disprove what's wrong.

Don't direct indigenous quotes at me to discredit my indigenous experiences for example, especially if you aren't indigenous yourself. That's a conversation for us. Also each tribe/scientific field is different (look Point 1).

Look outside the western world and if you have the means to travel pls visit not just the popular tourist sites. The villages/towns can tell you so much more than I can in a post. Try to have a local host you if it's not too difficult for them.

Don't dismiss rural folks as dumb/naive/racist. Doesn't mean bigotry isn't a problem, but try to pick out what they are saying about rural communities and ag in particular, bc they're still locals and still know more about local circumstances. Stay on topic.

Be suspicious about feel-good-uwu-stuff. It doesn't always have to be bad, but if what you're looking at primarily adresses your emotions you wanna be suspicious. Like cute animal videos, anthropomorphism especially, tech that seems to magically solve an issue, that stuff.

But also, even if you feel suspicious about tech/agriculture/etc keep it mind it might help others out. I highly criticized lab grown meat from an ag engineering perspective, but also mentioned it is probably amazing for healthcare. Some gadgets we might call lazy, but they can be incredibly helpful to disabled people and so on. Let's try to keep a door open with the benefits other people in mind

I'll add constantly seek education to this list BUT I don't recommend specific documentaries or books, bc they can be misleading especially if one misses out on pre-info that those forms of media built on. There can be a lot of emotional manipulation, weird framing, and so on and even with factual statements it's easy to frame smth wrong, check out the entire dehydrogenmonoxid=water project a student tried out.

Not to say there isn't good stuff out there, but pls don't get caught in echo chambers. If you have access to academic sources try to use them, even if they're more 'boring'.

TL;DR: don't get polarized, use nuance and talk to a variety of people and leave the job of 'correcting' experts to other experts.

Coming Out

I don’t really know where to pour my heart out other then Tumblr. Considering this site has the most random stuff i think it’s the right place to get this off my chest. It’s gonna be a long post so i will be pouring my heart out under the ‘keep reading’ line. Basically it boils down to the fact that I just came out as Non-Binary to the people i work with. Which leaves me in a whirlpool of emotions. I’ve already bawled my eyes out and i might do it again. Because i’m scared as hell, relieved as all hell and i feel like i can fucking breathe for the first time since forever. Everything is just overwhelming right now. But i need to get this off my chest. And i have literally no where else to post this. Just a heads up, i will be talking about my own experience, which brushes the subject of depression, anxiety and suicide. So if you’re sensitive to these subjects, i completely understand if you decide not to read. 

Onto my story:

First up, I’m Non-Binary. (He/Him Pronouns) And it may be a strange opening line but you have to understand that i haven’t been able to say this out loud, with pride, for years. I have been going through a really rough childhood and up until highschool i thought that it was because there was something wrong with me. As highschool progressed, things didn’t get any better, except for the fact that i started to understand something wasn’t necessarily wrong with me. I was just different then other people. And at the end of highschool i finally figured out what was what. But i couldn’t do anything with that knowledge. Depression, Anxiety, bullying and other things kept a lid on it. 

I thought it was best to suffer in silence because i was so scared that everything was going to get so much worse if i came out as a Non-binary person. On top of that, I’m a Pansexual. It’s a logical but not a great combo as these are two things that are very ‘new’ and ‘recently introduced’ to society. I know these things were existing before we could even give it a name. (And my heart hurts thinking of all those people in the past who struggled with this their whole lives unable to give it a name or come to terms with it)

I was struggling with multiple things, trying to keep my head above the water. Which backfired completely as i got depressed, my first ever girlfriend backstabbed me, which made me feel like an even more sore loser, i struggled with self esteem, my gender, my sexuality, my body, my personality. Basically everything a teenager would be going through except... It was really bad. So bad i wanted to end it all. I did try to push myself to commit suicide, but in the end i couldn’t go through with it. I thought it was too selfish to leave my parents and sisters behind without answers. And though at least i didn’t feel guilty for leaving them behind, i felt miserable with my life.

Fast forward to college, I was struggling. Walking around like a zombie. My education suffered, i suffered. My depression got worse. I had to quit and i spend half a year at home, in bed. Refusing to get up for anything other then food or the bathroom or maybe a shower if i felt like it. At this point i would hurt myself to distract me from the pain on the inside. If i felt pain on the outside, i wouldn’t pay attention to the fact that i felt like i couldn’t breathe, every day.

My parents eventually forced me to do some volunteer work. (no people involved, i had to go to a farm where special care was given to the disabled and feed the animals in the petting zoo there.) The animals made me feel more at ease and the fresh air did me some good. I was getting a bit better. I stopped hurting myself because the volunteer job distracted me enough. But i still felt like i couldn’t breathe. Until my parents suggested i go see a Psychiatrist. Help was help, or so i thought, so i agreed. But (and don’t get me wrong, i love my parents and respect their beliefs) the psychiatrist was from a Christian organization and he didn’t get me at.all. According to him i was suffering from a personality disorder and identity disorder. Which i KNEW wasn’t true. 

Naturally i quit therapy because the man wouldn’t listen to me. Now i’m a Christian too, and i know we aren’t all the same. But i didn’t want to risk it, so i went looking for a more open minded psychiatrist . One who was perhaps an atheist or hanging on some other religion. I didn’t care as long as he was open minded. (I didn’t feel comfortable with female psychiatrists at the time, but if i had i would have considered going to one) So i found a psychiatrist that i had a good feeling with and things started to get better. He helped me get through my trauma (I was sexually assaulted when i was eleven. Because of my low self esteem I couldn’t say ‘no’. I was too shy and timid to stick up for myself and this fucker knew and abused it.) He helped me gain more confidence. He helped me build up more self esteem and accept my sexuality. But Gender was still an issue.

Eventually we were at a stalemate. I felt like i had to figure the rest out for myself. He too said he gave me the tools i needed, but it was up to me to build my life. 

fast forward to my second attempt at collage. I struggled through a relationship that didn’t work. and ended things with my date in the start of the second year. It was a 3 year education program that eventually took me 5 and a half years to complete. But i did it. And i got my degree and boy i was proud. But then... I had to start working and put myself in the professional field. This was 3 years ago. Thinking back on the hell i went through to get where i was, i didn’t want to risk people misunderstanding me or turning me down because i was different. I kept my gender and sexuality trapped tightly in my private life. 

But you may have guessed it: It still made me feel miserable. I was lying to myself. And every time someone addressed me with female pronouns it was like someone was banging a hammer on a piano. I tried to ignore it but people started noticing i was very closed off and quiet and basically not a very happy person. I went from my first job to another employer somewhere else because i needed more hours. (there was never anything wrong with my first job, they just thought i was really shy. but i couldn’t get more hours so i moved on.) Hoping that it would be better there. Same story, same results. They noticed something was wrong. When i tried carefully to open up about what was bothering me, i got fired. That was at the start of this year. I tried hard to find a new job, the first job interview i had i felt like it had to be now or never. So i thought ‘fuck it all’ and i told them about my gender and that i preferred male pronouns even though i looked feminine. Guess what. They decided not to hire me. Big surprise. So the next time, i didn’t say a thing. 

Then i was about to get hired and then lockdown happened. And they laid me off. I was starting to feel depressed again. And helpless. Hopeless. I thought back on my first employer, and what a good time i had there despite my struggles and me being so quiet. So i was like: Why the hell not? And i tried again to get a job with the same employer. They had a place for me, not at the location i worked at before, but at a different one. Five days a week. I felt like i just witnessed a miracle when they decided to hire me. But i didn’t tell them anything about my gender or struggles, i just told them i have trouble opening up but i’m really trying. And they are patient with me and help me wherever they can. It’s also a Christian organization, but they are much more open minded then you’d expect religious people to be. (To be fair not everyone employed there is actually religious) 

Two months go by and i’m having a good time. The job is perfect, my co workers are really nice. I’m having a great time. But there is still that nagging feeling every time a kid calls me Teacher. (I’m Dutch. We don’t have a word like Teacher. With us it’s divided into Female teachers ‘Juffen’ And Male teachers ‘Meesters’) So they naturally call me the female equivalent of teacher. And i absolutely hate it. Again i hear that hammer banging on the piano and i feel like i can’t breathe. Then i learn that one of my co-workers is a Lesbian and in a relationship and everyone is acting so normal about it. And she has been working there for 6 years now. It broke something in me. I just didn’t want to lie to myself and others anymore. But because of everything that happened i was so scared to come out as Non-Binary.

So a few weeks ago i was finally so fed up with everything and the constant feeling that my chest was constricted and a knot being in my throat every time a kid called me teacher. So finally, there were some kids joking about boys and girls and what would make someone a boy or a girl. (kids are so sweet and innocent at the age of 5 they don’t know any better) So some of the girls were giggling and started calling me the male equivalent of teacher. I nearly cried. I never felt so happy in my life. But then one of my co-workers tried to correct them and i just blurted out: “Please don’t correct them. It’s fine. They can call me that.” 

She was surprised. And i thought: ‘What did i do now?’ But on second thought, it didn’t give me the chance to run away again or hide or keep struggling in silence. Because later she asked me what i meant with it and i told her my story. Of how my gender and how i was addressed effected me. I told her everything and i was shaking. I was scared, i was on the edge of crying, because i remembered all the times that me coming out as a person, with my Non-binary gender had caused me more harm then good.

She was very calm about it. I could tell she was trying her best to understand even if she was left a bit confused, and we talked about solutions. She then suggested that if it would make me really happy, then starting immediately, we would teach these kids to address me with my name instead of as a teacher. (I work in after care for kids who’s parents have to work, so we pick them up from school and look after them until dinner time when their parents pick them up. We aren’t teachers anyway.) 

I never really thought about that. And i agreed on the solution. So then we started to teach these kids to address me with my name. Another co worker i often work with heard this being brought into practice, which also kind of left me to explain to her why this was now a thing and why it needed to continue to be a thing. So i told my story to her. Again i was scared as hell, shaking and near crying. But she also responded calmly and told me she thought i was brave and that she would try to help me teach these kids to address me by my name.

I work with one other co worker on a regular basis. I haven’t told her the why yet but i asked her to help me teach the kids to address me with my name. (those kids are 6-7 years old and are a little easier when teaching something new) She agreed even if she didn’t know why. I will tell her soon. Probably next week. But i’m still nervous and my emotions are all over the place.

I also told my ehmm superior? Is that the word? I don’t know but she works at the office on our location to organize everything for everyone and make sure we have a list of which kids are coming on which days and stuff like that. I ended up telling half of my story to her too. She was interested but busy with a lot of other things too, which made it even scarier to tell her. (I always get more scared if i can’t really figure out how a person is going to respond or if the response is too vague for me to be able to tell if it was bad or good). But she was very calm about it too. So i want to see if i can sit down with her sometime and tell her my whole story to see if she can understand it a little better, and how we’re going to implement this in my work. Who needs to know, who can know and how we will solve the pronouns thing. (Although she seemed happy with the solution of calling me by my name. She seemed to support it) 

So as you can guess, after the last two weeks my emotions and feelings have been all over the place. I don’t sleep well some nights because all of this is going on and it’s so recent and fresh that i’m still worried. but... I can breathe.. For the first time since forever i can breathe. I’m happy. I’m not lying to myself. I don’t have to hide. And even if they don’t fully understand it, i’m finally being fully supported. 

(I love my parents as i’ve said before. But because of their beliefs they can’t fully support me. They will always love me. But to them i will never be anything else than their daughter and their little girl. And though it hurts my heart more then they realize, they refuse to use male pronouns for me. But they love me and they will never ever turn me away. I will always be welcome in their home. They will always love me as their child. They will never cut me off or disown me or turn away from me. So they support me. Just not 100% in the way i wished they would.) 

(My sisters are more open. Though my older sister has some trouble, she tries to use he/him even though she told me honestly that she doesn’t think she can ever see me as her little brother. So i told her ‘Don’t. Because i’m Non-Binary. Just see me as your little person.’ She laughed and said: Alright.  My little sister is the easiest. She doesn’t mind calling me Bro. She even said she always wanted a brother so she calls me dude and bro and uses he/him and i love her for it.)

But now at my work of all places (next to my few friends who use he/him as well) i have people who support me fully and try to help me be who i am without me having to feel ashamed for it or repressing it because i think being myself will cause me more harm then good. I can be myself. I can finally just let go. I have cried so hard already and i’m almost crying again typing this all out. Good god i know it’s a long story but... I’m just so overwhelmed. I needed to get this all out there one way or another. Just because i’m so overwhelmed that i need an outlet. So Tumblr. Here you go. This is my coming out story and i’m gonna go off and bawl my eyes out in a corner again because... I am overwhelmed.

What I want for all of the characters on the show right now (A mostly comprehensive list)

Aaron - Post spiral, give him Seb. Let him be a single dad. Give him a new friend (a new character, Billy, Vic/Matty/Amy) Have him either get a new partner at the scrapyard or get rid of it altogether and buy into the garage so he can interact with people again from time to time. Also...overalls. 

Liv - Get her away from Aaron. Let her mix with the teens again. Especially the Gabby/Leanna/Jacob crowd. Explore her epilepsy in that setting. Explore her asexuality more. I’d love to see her realize she might have a thing for a girl. 

Chas - Cheat on Paddy. Get out of that character suffocating relationship. Get her spark back. 

Paddy - Break up with Chas. Take a holiday? Stick to scenes with Marlon?

Bear - LEAVE - He serves no purpose. Even less so now that Faith has gone too. He’s just dead weight and his and Paddy’s relationship is not interesting in any way. 

Eric - I’d like to see the B&B more. I miss when we used to see him there with Val all the time. 

David - I’d like to see him stay single for a while. Take more of an interest in Jacob and keep being a dad to Theo. Could have new parent stories with Vic or Chaddy (**shudder I know).

Leyla - I’d like to see her get to do more at Take a Vow, get to plan Sam and Lydia’s big village wedding and more. I would definitely be up for her and Liam if they want to go there. 

Jacob - I’d like to see him actually continue to mention that he’s getting counseling and see some of the effects of that. If they don’t go with Liam and Leyla, I think he and Leanna properly together could be nice. 

Liam - Keep being the amazingly fabulous person that he is. I’m sad we lost Bernice, but I do think he and Leyla really could work if they wanted to go there. 

Leanna - I’d like to see her keep up her friendship with Gabby even though their parents aren’t together anymore. I’d be open to seeing her and Jacob actually date if their parents aren’t going to.

Gabby - I’d love to see Gabby get a bigger story. Let her start being a bit more adult. I’d like to see her get a job in the village. She could go back to working at the B&B but we actually see it. I’d love to see her get a real love interest or a big issue story. Rosie has proven she can handle bigger material with the Ashley stuff, so I’d like to see her get to do that again. 

Diane - I’d love to see more of the B&B again in general. I miss it. I’d keep her to the comedy stuff. Let her interact with Eric more and Liam too. Maybe a few heart to hearts with Aaron since she’s the only one who will listen to him apparently. 

Wendy - LEAVE - I really don’t know what purpose she serves once she eventually realizes Lee was a rapist and Vic wasn’t lying. I just want Vic to be free of these people and I don’t see what Wendy brings to the village and Vic shouldn’t have to forgive her for all of the harassment and the stalking and she shouldn’t have to accept her into Harry’s life. Just let Wendy go Emma Barton and babynap Harry and be done with it. 

Luke - LEAVE - I don’t really have a problem with Luke but I’d rather Vic just get a fresh start away from all of Lee’s family. If he did stay though, I guess he could be a candidate for being Aaron’s friend as long as they built that up in a more natural way rather than him just happening to be there when he’s getting chucked out of clubs. 

Victoria - Needs a fresh start for her and Harry. I think Vic is a character that needs to be rested for a while. She had a big year last year and I think she could just enjoy being a mum and juggling that with work and supporting her friends. I think in the second half of the year, perhaps they could explore her trying to date again. I just wouldn’t have it be Luke.

Matty - I know he just moved back to the farm, but I need him to move right back out again. Matty needs to have his own story, not just be stuck on Moira duty. I really really want to see them explore a relationship story for Matty again. 

Amy - Since they’re obviously never going to give her any consequences for Frank’s death, I’d sort of just like to see her keep being a supportive friend for the time being. I think she’s good in that role. Or, and we’d have to see how it worked out chemistry wise, they could have Amy try and help Matty find a girlfriend and end up falling for him instead. 

Kerry - Keep using her in small doses only. Her and Mandy make a fun comedy duo in the salon but they need to be kept at a minimum to appreciate them. 

Cain - I’d like to see him have a thing with Cara again perhaps. If he’s ever going to get back with Moira, they need to take their time with it and really properly build it back up and make it stick this time. 

Moira - Let her lose the farm for the love of god so a new family can move in. She needs a massive shake up as a character because she’s just going in circles. She needs off the farm and back in the mix of the village. I have considered the idea of her buying Charity out of the pub with the farm sale money. She could fight with Chas as they work out how to run the pub together. Give them both their spark back and that could pave the way for her and Cain to work things out if they want to go that way. She’d just have to learn to not drink the place dry first. 

Nate - LEAVE - I want Cara to stay but Nate still seems pretty useless to me. I just don’t think Cain ever needed another kid in the picture. I don’t see what it does for him as a character. I don’t see why he should have to forgive Nate for what he did. So...what’s the point. Plus Pete is leaving so he won’t have him to help on the farm anyway. Mostly, I want him to facilitate Cara staying and then get run over by his own tractor or something. 

Cara - I’ve liked her so far in the three episodes we’ve gotten of her. I’d be up for her staying for a bit and sorting Nate out or pushing him in front of that tractor and maybe having a thing with Cain or anyone else she wants to. 

Charity - I’d love to see her get out of the pub and get back to using her business skills. I’d love to see some real conflict between her and Vanessa that lasts more than a week and a half. But if they’re going to ever get married, just let them get married and then let them have conflict or something. I’d love to see her continue to pay attention to Noah. 

Vanessa - Again, conflict for her and Charity. Could be interesting to finally get her mum to come to the village. She could come for the wedding, cause some friction between her and Charity. I’d like them to continue her friendships with Rhona and Moira. She’s good in friend mode. 

Noah - I think they’ve been doing well with Noah lately. I would like to see him and Charity work on their relationship more. I’d like to maybe see him mixing it up with the older teens again too. Maybe a crush on a girl. 

Sarah - Same as Noah, I’ve liked what they’ve been doing with her lately. And I’d just keep her hanging out with the rest of the teens. 

Ryan - LEAVE?? - I hate to say that because obviously having a disable character on the show is a good thing but he just never should have been Charity’s son. She didn’t need another kid and they haven’t done nearly enough with that relationship to make it worthwhile. They barely let him interact with his siblings. All he does is show up for occasional tech help. And he’s only up at Home Farm to facilitate Graham murder stuff so just like...do something with him or let him go. 

Kim - Keep her interacting with the rest of the village. It’s the best version of her. I’d love to see her properly fall for someone and have real feelings rather than it all feeling like a manipulation. 

Jamie - Keep him and Andrea separated. Let him keep this backbone he’s developed. I’d like to see him repair his relationship with Rhona post Graham because I did like it at the start. I think he and Belle could be good together. 

Andrea - LEAVE??? - She’s another one who they either need to do something with or let her go. She might be the one to kill Graham and leave that way, who knows. If she’s going to stay, she needs to move into the village and get out of Home Farm and away from Jamie and make her own life. Get a proper friend, find someone new etc. 

Rhona - Rhona probably needs a post Graham break. Then I’d just like to see her repair all of her relationships with everyone she’s hurt. As far a romance for her goes, I did consider her and Marlon getting back together. Although as things currently stand...that’s gonna take awhile. 

Al - If they’re going to put him with Kim, I want real feelings. Mostly, I want them to let him be a real villain. The show needs a villain and the Al that first showed up in the village had that potential. 

Ellis - LEAVE - Damnit Asan! I loved Ellis but New!Ellis just doesn’t work. I don’t know if he could if they actually gave him screen time and his own story but as it is now, I just want to ship him back to Dubai. 

Billy - I really like Billy right now. I love that they’re keeping his relationship with Marlon going. I like him and Dawn. They could probably use some real conflict at some point too but so far, I like them as they are. If Al was going to go full villain, that could also provide some good material for him. He is a candidate for a friend for Aaron too. I know how he was introduced and that they never really resolved that between them but there’s always the chance for them to have a proper conversation about it and move on. I think they could be good for each other in the long run. Aaron is lost without Robert and Billy no longer has a proper Ellis, so it could work potentially. 

Dawn - As I said, I like her and Billy together. I think they need to make a decision with Lucas once and for all. If she’s going to get him back, I think it could provide good material for her and Billy, dealing with having a little kid to parent. 

Harriet - Zzzzzzzzzzzz - Is it time for a new vicar yet? Mostly, I think she needs to stick to the village events and the background snark because whenever she gets a real story, it’s just so dull. 

Will - much the same as Harriet. He could stay or go, I wouldn’t care. He’s fine as village color I guess. 

Marlon - He’s great as he is, serving up snark and food from the Woolpack kitchen. I love him playing support to everyone, he always elevates whatever scene he’s in. I’d love to see him get a love interest that is going to stick around for a while. Both he and April need that stability. If they can get past the Graham of it all, he and Rhona have always worked well together. So...maybe?

Zak - I assume Zak is off because of the actor needing the break. I hope Steve Halliwell is doing okay. Before Lisa got killed off, I always thought it would have been an interesting story for Zak to get killed off but for now he can just be if he ends up coming back. 

Belle - I’d like to see her get more to do at the vets and I’d be up for her and Jamie. 

Sam and Lydia - LET THEM GET MARRIED!!!! A big, crazy Sam and Lydia wedding is all I want. Also would like to see Lydia continue to deal with the Huntingtons stuff and her family.

Mandy - Like Kerry, she’s best in small doses. I like her up with the rest of the Dingles though. She is fun. I wouldn’t mind it if she stuck around a bit longer. 

Vinny - I still don’t have a clue what’s going on with Vinny and who his parents are and if that will ever be relevant. If it’s going to be, I wish they’d just get it over with already. Other than that, if he’s staying, I’d like to see him actually leave Wishing Well and make friends with some of the other teens in the village. 

Bob - Stick to bar work and stay the hell away from Wendy. 

Brenda - Keep being you. I’d like to see them properly do something with her and Doug though because I forget they’re actually supposed to be together most of the time. 

Doug - Let him plan a garden show or something insane like that. 

Rodney - SMALL DOSES

Nicola and Jimmy - Keep being the legends you are. I want to see Jimmy get properly absolved for all of the Arthur/Archie stuff. I want to see so much more of Councilor Nicola. I’d like to see Jimmy take someone new on at the Haulage firm and maybe just sigh all the time that they’re not Robert because he was better. 

Laurel and Jai - I want to see them stay together. I think they work well together. They just need to get through this Graham mess in tact and sort out their kids’ problems. I’d like to see them continue to blend their families though, maybe living together eventually. I’d also like to see Jai have some success in business. Either at the outdoor pursuits place or starting his own thing again. 

Priya - LET HER BE A SHARMA AGAIN. Let’s forget Rakesh ever existed. GET HER A STORYLINE!!! GIVE HER A NEW LOVE INTEREST! Literally anything. 

Rishi and Manpreet - I want to see his chocolate business grow some more. And for them to just keep being as they are. 

Pearl - I MISS PEARL! I hope she’s okay. Any Pearl we can get is good. 

Dan - Small Doses, stick to the background. 

Pete - Please need to leave to go tend to your one remaining brother because his girlfriend got hit by a bus…

Tracy - Let Tracy find some business success again. I really liked her trying to start her own business. Or if Andrea goes, let her go work at Take a Vow with Leyla. Let her find love again too. 

New Characters I want

A new family at Butler’s Farm - let them be a big family with multiple generations. They decimated the Bartons and the show needs another bigger family coming in all together to balance out all of the Dingles. 

A new gay male character in his 20s to take the pressure off of Aaron needing to be in a relationship. I think it would be nice if they were friends though. Let the new guy have some crazy relationships of his own. Could be part of the new family.

Teen lesbian. Could be part of the new family too. I think it’d be nice to explore coming out or already being out for the younger generation. Also could be an interesting potential love interest for Liv.

I was asked a while ago by a friend to share my thoughts on ADHD, and what I believe about this unique neuro-diversity that we all seem to have. It has taken me some time to put it into words, but here is the basic gist of it and I hope it can help someone to understand the “why” behind what we all experience.

ADHD is not a curse, It is not broken, it is NOT a malfunction of the brain or a “Mis-wiring”. It is not from your mother smoking cigarettes when you were in utero, and it is NOT from too much television as a child. ADHD is a Nuero-diversity. It is a different wiring of the brain as it relates to the body and to information collection AND most importantly it has a purpose! Before I get to that piece though, let me share with you what I KNOW about ADHD.

ADHD is a label that we have assigned to individuals that present with a specific set of symptoms associated with a diagnosable neuro-diversity. These symptoms can include things like distractibility, forgetfulness, inattention, hyper-focused attention, emotional storms, irritability, feelings of worthlessness, active or overactive imagination,  tardiness or skewed senses of time, imposter syndrome, out of control thoughts, and severely low self-esteem.

Recently, research studies have identified three (3) aspects of ADHD that are experienced by almost everyone with this neuro-diversity and not experienced by almost none without it.

Interest-based nervous system: Not just interest-based attention, but your entire nervous system functions differently based on your level of interest. When you find something truly interesting it will actually energize you. Sleep is irrelevant, Food is a fleeting thought. You are sustained by interest. Have you ever found yourself up way past time to go to bed, forgot that you had to go to the bathroom, or didn’t eat, just because you were so interested in something? Yeah, me too.

Emotional Hyper-Arousal:  Imagine this like you have a volume knob for “Emotions” and yours is turned up 5 notches higher than the neuro-typical people around you. Your highs are higher, your lows are lower. Merely funny is hilarious and mildly sad is sorrowful. Everything is extreme. Not worth humor is funny and not worth heartache is indeed sad. Every emotion felt is more-than.

Rejection-sensitive-dysphoria: Basically, we are hypersensitive to rejection, from anyone. It doesn’t really matter if we consciously care about the individual or group that is enacting the rejection. We are just hyper-sensitive to being rejected by anyone for any reason. Even if we don’t want to be part of the club, we are sensitive to the club not wanting us as a member kind of thing.

Now if we combine these symptoms and aspects we begin to see some pretty obvious and reoccurring traits that cause problems in daily life.

Imposter syndrome: Minimizing our accomplishments and maximizing our failures or faults. If we succeed, then it was easy or luck, but if we fail it is because we are flawed or broken and we are totally responsible.

Hyper-focus: I can be focused on something that I am interested in, but cannot manage to pay attention to a board meeting. I am all about the next book coming out, but forget my anniversary.

Emotional storm: I have a thousand thoughts running through my head and each one has an emotion that I have to feel as it passes and therefore I feel a thousand emotions in the span of a few seconds and cannot differentiate between them.

There are many many more that I don’t think that I need to list. You can see the patterns I am sure.

What if…..?

What if ADHD was natural?

What if ADHD was not ADHD, but something else?

What if ADHD was NOT a Deficit or a Disorder, but an adaptation?

Scientific research now suggests that what we know as ADHD is actually an evolutionary adaptation to a Hunter/Gather lifestyle.

In a natural environment, where there are predators and prey, where the rustling of leaves, or the flash of game in the periphery, or the trickling of water heard,  could mean the difference between life or death, it is actually an extreme benefit to have an overabundance of involuntary attention. It is a bonus to be hyper-aware (distractable).

This is why so many that have ADHD wired brains find solace in natural environments. There is so much to “Pull” our attention, but so little to “Pay” attention to. We find ourselves recharged by walks in the forest or sitting near a babbling brook. This is our natural born element and so it invigorates us.

So why so few of us then? Well, let's look at that. Darwin’s theories of evolution state that: If there is a mutation in an individual that is part of a species that makes that individual more likely to survive, then that mutation will be passed along to its offspring and therefore make the offspring more likely to survive than it’s counterparts of the same species and thus, the mutation will eventually, though the process of natural selection, be distributed to the entire species and will no longer be a mutation, just part of the species. For example: if a bird has a mutation that increases its beak size and that increases its survivability, then eventually the entire species will have larger beaks. So, let's look back at 20,000 years into our human history. Everyone that existed on the planet were hunter/gathers. It is very likely that at that time, the majority of individuals were also what we call today, ADHD. Then one day, someone decided that it would be a good idea to plant & farm & build walls & raise livestock & stay in one place.

Now we have these sedentary people that are NOT hunting or gathering in dangerous environments. They are protected by walls and removed from danger.

However, we still have all these ADHDers that cannot stand being still, so they are still hunting and gathering and putting themselves in danger.

Who is more survivable now?

Fast forward 20,000 years…..97% of all humans are sedentary and only 3% are ADHDers.

ADHD is not new, it is not made up by Pharma, it has always been here, just never called the same thing. The first mention of an individual that appeared to display ADHD symptoms that I found was from the writing of Hippocrates, also known as the father of modern medicine, he stated: The patient has quickened responses to sensory experience, but also less tenaciousness because the soul moves on quickly to the next impression.

Back then, “soul” was the word for mind and “impression’ was the word for thought. So what he was saying is ...The patient has heightened responses to external stimulation but has less follow-through because the mind moves on quickly to the next thought.

If that is not ADHD I don’t know what is.

This is not a bad thing though. All we need to do is look throughout history to see ADHDers in action. We can take the symptomatology that we know now and apply it to historical figures and we see that the most innovative and influential individuals in history were probably ADHDers.

ADHD is not the “fault” it’s the exception. We have always been here and we have always been the ones that are changing the world.

There is statistically a higher percentage of ADHD in America than in Europe. Researchers believe that this is because our founding fathers and the immigrants that are our heritage had the out-of-the-box impulsiveness to pack up and go across an entire ocean to make a better life!

ADHD is not a curse, it is not a disorder, society has the disorder because as much as it touts individuality, it is only acknowledged once an individual complies with the obligation of normalcy.  You cannot be creative unless you can get to work on time. You cannot be innovative unless all your bills are paid. Blah Blah Blah….

Being born with ADHD is like being born with a beautiful pair of raven black angel wings. Imagine for a moment how that would be. You would be shunned as a freak. Called an abomination. You would try to hide your birthright if only to “Fit in” or be “normal”, and always throughout all of the insults and put-downs, through all of the pain and sorrow, all you would have to do is spread those beautiful black wings and soar….

We are not the problem. We are the solution. We are the R&D while everyone else trudges on the assembly line. We are the inventors and the visionaries, while the neuro-typical are content with the status quo. We take the risks and run the chance….sometimes to our detriment, but also sometimes to glory.

Doubt yourself all you want. Tell us all that “your” ADHD is a disorder or a disability, but make no mistake…..You are amazing.

I literally worked as a ghostwriter, writing for these exact kind of content farms, from about 2015 to 2020 when pandemic burnout finally forced me to stop.

I have lost count of how many books I've written. At one point I was writing 6000 words a day, finishing three books for three separate clients concurrently every month.

There's a bookshelf worth of books out there that I wrote that don't have my name on them. I wrote sci fi romance, urban fantasy, paranormal romance, historical, a whole series of romance novels specifically about single mothers falling in love with arab sheiks? You name it I probably wrote it.

And I have to dispute that these books are never quality or well crafted, or that you can tell real self published work from ghostwritten because the former will be more polished than the latter.

First of all because I have seen plenty of genuine, non ghost written self published novels that any ghostwriter I know could write circles around.

And second because I poured my heart and soul into every book I wrote and it fucking killed me.

It was emotionally, physically, and mentally destructive in every way. But I couldn't physically stop myself from caring about the story and trying to do it justice. I'm a writer. I can't not be a writer.

I knew lots of other ghostwriters who were the same as me, writing themselves into an early grave putting everything into books a client would slap on amazon with a stock cover without so much as a second proofreading pass and immediately turn around and demand more.

The people publishing the books are assholes, but the people writing the books are writers, doing their best to make whatever schlock concept the client gives them a compelling read.

And it was always an exploitative racket. Starting pay was one cent a word, which meant a 50k novel (the most frequently asked for length) earned you $500 flat, usually paid in installments with every 10k words you turned in. $500 for a solid month of work. When I was killing myself doing this full time, writing three novels at a time, I was bringing home a whopping $1500 a month.

I did this work because as a disabled person I couldn't do anything else, and I wanted to write. But I'd come to accept I was never going to get published, because I can't network and I can't market myself. I just don't have the social skills. Self publishing was a dead end for the same reason.

But I felt like as long as I could be writing something, that was enough. And god knows I needed the money. And the one big upside this had compared to trying to get published was a relatively steady income. The client always wanted more as fast as you could crank it out, and you got a flat, reliable payment instead of the insecurity of royalties or advances.

It was as close as I could get to my dream job, which is that scene from the Star Trek DS9 episode where Sisko dreams about being a 20th century writer, working at a sci fi magazine with a bunch of other writers, and the editor just assigns the writers prompts and then edits and publishes whatever they hand in.

However, as much of a racket as it was, it's become worse since the pandemic and the emergence of chatGPT.

As much as I and the other ghostwriters cared about quality, the clients don't give a shit. Once they realized they could just have chatgpt write the book for free and then pay someone even less than they were paying us to edit it just enough to be coherent, most of the jobs vanished overnight.

The few that were left were paying, at best, half a cent per word, and they wanted you to come up with your own concepts and outlines for free on top of it.

Upwork, the best place to find these jobs, also decided to slam their dick in the car door by making it a fucking microtransaction to apply to jobs. You literally have to buy "tokens" from them to spend on just sending in an application, no guarantee the client will even look at it. The amount you have to pay to apply is also variable, and you can pay more to bump your application to the top of the pile so the client will read it before other people's, supposedly. And if that sounds like a winning business model to you, I've got a bridge to sell you.

There are maybe two creative ghost writing jobs of this kind up on Upwork now, and they're god awful. Maybe they've moved somewhere else, but I can't find them, and I don't really want to. Writing that way killed my passion for writing for a long time. It took me years to recover and be able to write reliably again.

I've gone off track, but I guess my point is this.

Don't assume something isn't ghostwritten just because it's good.

And at this point, you have a lot more to worry about from AI spam than ghost writers anyway.

And also op is right, anyone publishing more than a book a year is probably exploiting a team of criminally underpaid ghostwriters. Don't push yourself to try and meet that kind of impossible standard. It will kill your desire to write, destroy you physically, and it will never pay what its worth.

So, there's a dirty little secret in indie publishing a lot of people won't tell you, and if you aren't aware of it, self-publishing feels even scarier than it actually is.

There's a subset of self-published indie authors who write a ludicrous number of books a year, we're talking double digit releases of full novels, and these folks make a lot of money telling you how you can do the same thing. A lot of them feature in breathless puff pieces about how "competitive" self-publishing is as an industry now.

A lot of these authors aren't being completely honest with you, though. They'll give you secrets for time management and plotting and outlining and marketing and what have you. But the way they're able to write, edit, and publish 10+ books a year, by and large, is that they're hiring ghostwriters.

They're using upwork or fiverr to find people to outline, draft, edit, and market their books. Most of them, presumably, do write some of their own stuff! But many "prolific" indie writers are absolutely using ghostwriters to speed up their process, get higher Amazon best-seller ratings, and, bluntly, make more money faster.

When you see some godawful puff piece floating around about how some indie writer is thinking about having to start using AI to "stay competitive in self-publishing", the part the journalist isn't telling you is that the 'indie writer' in question is planning to use AI instead of paying some guy on Upwork to do the drafting.

If you are writing your books the old fashioned way and are trying to build a readerbase who cares about your work, you don't need to use AI to 'stay competitive', because you're not competing with these people. You're playing an entirely different game.

Looking around for a clean cup, you find plenty, though they are all new and impersonal. There's no trace of the old ones, chipped and personal, and in Ortega's case, the one that you had given him. Did someone throw them out when they moved?

It's been 7 years. Of course, they've moved on. The thought brings a mixture of sadness and relief.

"If you want some Coffee, it's going to cost you!" he says beaming a smile

"I'll pass... you know I'm cheap," you say keeping a straight face.

"Oh believe me I do... come over already!" he motions for you to follow.

You go through the corridors behind him. This is so wrong! Being back at their new place. Why... why did you ever return? You're not one of them and you never will...You should run. Tell him you had something bad to eat and leave. You should…-

"Here!" he stops and opens a door for you.

His office. You're still in time... you could just...

"Take a seat man!" he says pointing at a small sofa... there's a tray with some pastries... and two mugs with hot chocolate.

No... you shouldn't be doing this... you shouldn't...

And there are churros.

“I got some churros, I know you like them and…”

But you’ve already walked past him, sat down. You are completely focused on dipping your churro in thick chocolate. He chuckles shaking his head and takes a seat as well.

"You know, I never understood how you kept in shape back then" he comments. He has that fond half-smile. "You eat like there's two of you"

"Neither do I... maybe all the running from psychos with laser guns and evil robots had something to do with it" You speak between bites... it's exquisite... This is the best you've had since that mission in Spain when you stopped at the bar in Madrid. You were fresh off your training and full of questions and your handler told you to order whatever you wanted just to get you off her hair for a few minutes. Then she had to basically drag you out of the cafe.

He takes a sip of chocolate... and your gaze freezes on him.

It's the very same cup. Crap... your

"Y... you kept it," you say, stuttering

“Wha…?” he asks

You point at the cup. He puts it down and looks at you.

“Of course I did… Sidestep gave it to me.”

He extends a hand, taking yours. You let the churro inside the chocolate as he presses your fingers slightly.

“I gave it to you. Sidestep is dead”

“I still see him,” he says letting go. “He’s just grumpy, as he always was”

“That’s… not… “ you can’t finish that sentence. You realize not everyone’ has moved on. He hasn’t. You can see memorabilia of your past self all across the office. There’s even a shelf behind a glass… full of relics... It’s like he’s living the past.

Shit. There are a few seconds of silence… more than enough to be awkward.

And then he changes the subject. He was always better than you at these things. Soon enough you are devouring the churros and pastries along. He laughs. He talks about the past, without mentioning Sidestep again. Makes you laugh too. You say he looks good, that you’re happy to be here with him, sharing some sweets once more. He takes it as a flirt and escalates by comparing the churros to something else and makes you blush and wish the earth swallowed you. You deflect, but it leaves both of you longing for more, like always.

He planned the whole evening. You go to the cinema, watch a new movie. Animated, about a hero who encounters different realities and versions of himself. You don’t need that. There are already too many versions of you lose in this reality alone. You own regene self. Your puppet, walking around in your name. Your villain persona. Your past self, engraved in everyone’s mind. Especially his.

Again the superhero theme in the movie he chose. He hasn’t moved on past your death at all. He wants you to  become your old self again. And you can’t… you can’t turn back time and erase your scars. You are heading towards mutually assured destruction. What will he think once he figures it all out? You’re not one of them…

He won’t want anything to do with you. You are the black and white, dissonant in a colored world. Perhaps It was better when he didn’t know you were alive… You were meant to protect humans. Your disguise was never meant for you to believe yourself one of them. That is where you failed.  

You’ve certainly not protected Ortega. He’s been tortured all these years by the death of a friend that doesn’t even really exist. And he wants to be much more than your friend. And you…

You want it too, more than anything.

You suppress the contradicting thoughts.

Whatever finally happens between you, you’ll help him move on.

It’s the least you can do.

Mortum was dead right on design...

The extensible nanomesh cloak swirls theatrically as you reach the window, leaving a trail of fog behind you through its small smoke machines.

With the addition of the silent thrusters, you appear to glide in the night. Phantom is really a sight to behold. And you’ll play the part literally tonight.

The window is open, so it only takes a simple push to create an opening, and you hop inside.  You’ve been here before, so you know your way around. The hallway… the guest room… You are careful not to step where you know the boards will creak, revealing your presence.

You glide through the last part, opening the door with the utmost scare.

Your target’s asleep, as you expected.

Good.

Without a single sound, you take the magnetic cuff from your inner pockets.  

“Once it hits the target, it automatically binds them with titanium grade bindings” Mortum explained. You hope he’s right, or this will be a very awkward encounter.

The thing is shaped like a small disc, with a pair of buttons.

He stirs in his sleep, his chest facing up. Good, it’s almost as if he’s asking for you to do this.

You place the disk atop his chest. It sticks to his skin, with a small hiss of air suction.

He opens his eyes, groggily at first...  And then they fix on you, with a sudden moment of terror, followed by recognition.

And you press the button.

He attempts to incorporate, his senses warning him about the danger...

“SSCHCLACK!”

Metal tendrils extend everywhere from the circular device stuck to his chest, binding his arms and legs. It looks awfully uncomfortable, you’re glad they didn’t have any of these terror devices back at the farm.

“What in the hell…” He fights it, but the metal tendrils extend everywhere, and finally pull his arms together, behind his back, and his legs end up bound to each other.

Defeated, he falls on the bed struggling like a fish out of water. He glares at you.

You stand unmovable, your cloak swirling in the air, and fog filling the room. You must look ghostly and terrifying right now…

“Good evening Charge. Is this a bad moment?” You let out a few laughs, which isn’t hard because this is actually funny in a very twisted kind of way. And, hey, that’s you these days. Twisted.

You turn off the for generators with a flick of your wrist. Enough smoke already.

“Phantom! How did you…”

“I disabled your security systems Charge. It wasn’t difficult. I wonder how do you expect to stop me when your own house is such an easy target” Really. You could have just walked in and killed him. Not fun at all.

He lets out a powerful discharge. It doesn’t break the bindings but reminds you this won’t stop him indefinitely.

“Hijo de puta! Get this thing off me! What the fuck do you want?”

“I want what’s in your safe. The one behind that painting” you state. Better to go all about the business and not prolong this unnecessarily.

“What? Why? THere’s not even that much money in there! Do you think I’m rich pinche pendejo? I’m still paying debts, idiot!”

“Really? Because I know there’s something there that could be worth a small fortune” There are so many ways you could have found out, you should be safe from suspicion back as Awan.

He looks puzzled for a moment. And then he understands.

“No! No way!”

“Yes, way!. Tell me the access code. It will make this whole thing faster”

“Never! Go to hell! Vete a la chingada!!”

You laugh.

“You honestly think your old safe is going to stop me when I’ve robbed banks?”

He spits on you. “¡Púdrete!” he adds finally.

“I expected you to be a better loser” you sigh, clearing the spit from your mask. “Whatever, I’ll open it myself.”

You turn and remove the painting, some old picture of a farm. You hate farms. And then you begin working on the safe, connecting it to your wrist computer. All the while Ortega keeps yelling profanities from the bed.

“CLACK”

The door opens.

And there it is. You pull it out.

Your old gun. Sidestep’s old gun.

You turn to him showing him your prize.

“Put that back you fucker! You’ve got a problem with me you take it out on me! THat’s…”

“You know, you say you’re paying debts, and you keep a lot of memorabilia that could be worth so much all around this place. I’ve studied it well…”

“THat’s mine you psycho! It’s part of my fucking life! What the hell would you know about that?!”

“I know I could have killed you for the safe codes. You should put your priorities in order ranger. Sidestep is dead, after all” you say tapping his hair with the gun as you leave. He screams and yells, and you hear a loud thud as he falls from the bed trying to slither his way to you.

You glide away, trough the streets.

You hurry to the elevator. It’s on the news already, and you’re really worried.

Did you overdo it? Of course, you did, as usual. You should have left things as they were.

You get off the elevator and walk to his office passing the kitchen. Steel is there.

“He’s at his office,” He tells you, from the opposite end of the corridor. “And he’s completely out of it, see if you can talk to him”

“Will do. Thanks!” you stride through the corridors, and knock once you reach his door.

“Go Away” he yells.

You open it anyways and come through

“I said go awa...! ” he stops, as he sees you.

“Hey, it’s me… Are are you ok?” you say. It feels odd. To be the one asking. This isn’t how it always goes.

He’s teared up. And he’s got a remote control on his hand. The TV is on, and you can see Mia Ochoa reporting on how Phantom stole and sold Sidestep’s original gun on the Dark Web to an unknown collector for 1.5 million dollars, mocking the Rangers once more.  

The remote sparkles in his hands, his electrical power acting up under stress.

You approach, hesitantly… and hug him. You wonder if you’ll get a jolt… but he seems to calm down and hugs you back.

“I couldn’t… couldn’t stop Phantom” his arms hold you tight, his voice trembling. Fuck you definitely overdid it. He’s already traumatized by your death and now you pull this... You are hopeless trying to understand humans. You should just... “I’m sorry... He took… he took it…”

“It’s just a gun,” you say

“It’s not… It’s… It’s your gun. The real one!”

“That’s not mine Ricardo. Sidestep is dead. I buried him”

“No, he isn’t! You’re here!”

“I WAS Sidestep. Not anymore. I choose to be myself. Not him.”

“But…”

“I’m alive. I survived. Isn’t that what counts? He’s just a memory… let it go”

It takes a few moments before he physically lets go of you.

“Mierda… I… I guess you’re right.”

“I am?” you ask surprised. Is this actually working?

“Yes, pendejo. I’m thinking I got too attached to your old stuff… when you were...”

“... you don’t have to say it”

“You get me”

“Yep… “ when you were dead.

He plops down on the sofa.

“Thanks,” he says leaning back. “I’m still pissed. That money should have gone to you“ he says pointing at the TV which is showing a cash icon for the sale for 1.5 million “

It takes all of your acting skills to keep a straight face. “Well… yeah, it could have helped, but … Just let it go Ricardo, ok? It’s a stupid gadget. And I don’t need it.”

He rubs his face, then looks at you. “Since when are you the grown up?”

“I don’t know Ricardo, and it's fucking scary… so please let’s not do it anymore?”

You manage to make him crack a smile this time. “Alright, deal then.”

“Also, talking about scary… You should get rid of all this!” you point at a lot of your old stuff all around his office. “It’s hella creepy” you add as you fall on the sofa by his side.

“Shutup,” he says jokingly, punching your arm.

“Ow… I mean it You know, I could help you sell it. I think I remember what most of this shit is… Is that a piece of Quasar’s positronic brain?”

“You bet… “ he sighs “I’ll think about it… “.

And then he holds your hand… and you made the mistake of being too close, and he kisses you…

It takes longer than you’d want to regain control, but you make do, manufacturing an excuse to leave… but before that...

“Hey, I’ve got something for your office!” you say

“Huh? Really?”

“Yep! Here!” you hand him a small box.

He opens it… there’s another cup there. Just like the one you gave him back then. You had to pay 300 dollars to get the exact same, but you did.

“What the… “ He smiles, surprised “Is it my birthday or something?”

“No asshole. That’s for me to use the next time you have churros and chocolate, obviously!” you say closing the door behind you.

Linda Ronstadt Has Found Another Voice

The singer on living with Parkinson’s, the perils of stardom, and mourning what the border has become.

It’s been ten years since Linda Ronstadt, once the most highly paid woman in rock and roll, sang her last concert. In 2013, the world found out why: Parkinson’s disease had rendered her unable to sing, ending a musical career that had left an indelible mark on the classic-rock era and earned her ten Grammy Awards. Ronstadt’s earth-shaking voice and spunky stage presence jolted her to fame in the late sixties, and her renditions of “Different Drum” (with her early group, the Stone Poneys), “You’re No Good” (from her breakthrough album, “Heart Like a Wheel”), “Blue Bayou,” and “Desperado” helped define the California folk-rock sound. Along the way, two of her backup musicians left to form the Eagles.

But Ronstadt, now seventy-three, didn’t rest on her greatest hits, experimenting instead with a dizzying range of genres. In the eighties, she starred in Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance” on Broadway, recorded a standards album with the veteran arranger Nelson Riddle, and released “Canciones de Mi Padre,” a collection of traditional Mexican songs, which became the best-selling non-English-language album in American history. The record also returned Ronstadt to her roots. Her grandfather was a Mexican bandleader, and her father had serenaded her mother with Mexican folk songs in a beautiful baritone. She grew up in Tucson, Arizona, close to the border—a place that has since become a political flashpoint.

A new documentary, “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman and opening September 6th, looks back on Ronstadt’s adventurous career. She spoke with The New Yorker twice by phone from her home in San Francisco. Our conversations have been edited and condensed.

What is your day-to-day life like these days?

Well, I lie down a lot, because I’m disabled. I do a lot of reading, but I’m starting to have trouble with my eyes, so that’s kind of a problem. It’s called getting old.

What are you reading right now?

I’m reading Thomas Mann, “The Magic Mountain.” I somehow got to be this age without having read Thomas Mann, and I’m trying to make up for it. I read “Buddenbrooks,” and I fell in love with his writing. His books are nice and long, so it takes a couple of days to get through them.

Who do you spend most of your time with?

My son lives here. My daughter comes over. I have really nice friends; they come over and hang out with me. It’s hard for me to get out. It’s hard for me to sit in a restaurant or sit up in a chair. It’s hard for me to stand around, so if there’s a situation where I’m liable to be caught in a doorway talking to somebody for five minutes, I tend to avoid that.

What kind of music do you listen to?

I love opera. It’s so terrible—I listen to it on YouTube. I’m an audiophile, but I’ve just gotten used to the convenience of being able to hear twenty-nine different performances of one role. I listen to other music, too. I found this Korean band that I thought was sort of interesting on Tiny Desk concerts, the NPR series. They get musicians to come in and play live in a really tiny little space behind a desk. It’s no show biz, just music. They have great stuff. They had Randy Newman. Natalia Lafourcade, who’s a Mexican artist that I love particularly. Whatever’s new. The Korean band I saw was called SsingSsing.

Is it like K-pop?

No, it’s based on Korean traditional singing. It was kind of like David Bowie bass and drums, and then this really wild South Korean traditional singing. It’s polytonal. It’s a different skill than we use, with more notes in it. And a lot of gender-crossing. It looked like I was seeing the future.

When you sing in your mind, what do you hear?

I can hear the song. I can hear what I would be doing with it. I can hear the accompaniment. Sometimes I don’t remember the words, so I have to look them up. It’s not usually my songs I’m singing. I don’t listen to my own stuff very much.

           I listen to Mexican radio—the local Banda station out of San Jose. I mostly listen to NPR. I don’t listen to mainstream radio anymore. I don’t know the acts and I don’t know the music. It doesn’t interest me, particularly. There are some good modern people. I like Sia. She’s a very original singer.

How do you cope with the frustration of not being able to do everything you want to do?

I’ve just accepted it. There’s absolutely nothing I can do. I have a form of Parkinsonism that doesn’t respond to standard Parkinson’s meds, so there’s no treatment for what I have. It’s called P.S.P.—Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. I just have to stay home a lot. The main attraction in San Francisco is the opera and the symphony, and I make an effort and go out, but I can only do it a few times a year. It makes me sick that I’m ever not in my seat when Michael Tilson Thomas raises his baton, because he’s such a good conductor, and I miss hearing orchestral music. My friends come over and play music, and that’s where I like it best, anyway: in the living room.

As you tell it, the first symptoms you noticed before you knew you had Parkinson’s were in your singing voice.

Yeah. I’d start to do something and it would start to take the note and then it would stop. What you can’t do with Parkinsonism is repetitive motions, and singing is a repetitive motion.

You broke onto the scene with such a powerhouse voice. What did it feel like, singing with that voice?

Well, I was trying to figure out how to sing! And trying to be heard over the electric instruments. I had no idea that I sang as loud as I did. I always thought I wasn’t singing loud enough, because in the early days there were no monitors. You couldn’t hear yourself.

In the documentary, you talk about growing up in Tucson, Arizona, and how culturally rich that was. How do the current politics around the border resonate with you?

They’re devastating. I feel filled with impotent rage. I grew up in the Sonoran Desert, and the Sonoran Desert is on both sides of the border. There’s a fence that runs through it now, but it’s still the same culture. The same food, the same clothes, the same traditional life of ranching and farming. I go down there a lot, and it’s so hard to get back across the border. It’s ridiculous. It used to be that you could go across the border and have lunch and visit friends and shop in the little shops there. There was a beautiful department store in the fifties and sixties. My parents had friends on both sides of the border. They were friends with the ranchers, and we went to all their parties and their baptisms and their weddings and their balls.

And now that’s gone. The stores are wiped out because they don’t get any trade from the United States anymore. There’s concertina wire on the Mexican side that the Americans put up. Animals are getting trapped in there. Children are getting cut on it. It’s completely unnecessary. In the meantime, you see people serenely skateboarding and girls with their rollerskates, kids playing in the park. And you think, We’re afraid of this? They’re just regular kids!

I spent time out in the desert when I was still healthy, working with a group of Samaritans who go to find people that are lost. You run into the Minute Men or the Border Patrol every five seconds. The border is fully militarized. You meet some guy stumbling through the desert trying to cross, and he’s dehydrated, his feet are full of thorns, cactus, then you see this Minute Man sitting with his cooler, with all of his water and food and beer, and his automatic weapon sitting on his lap, wearing full camouflage. It’s so cruel. People are coming to work. They’re coming to have a better life. You have to be pretty desperate to want to cross that desert.

You were talking about this back in 2013, when your memoir came out, before it became such a national wedge issue. Were people not paying enough attention before?

Well, they didn’t live close to the border. They’d just go back to chewing their cud about it. It wasn’t their problem. I lived at the border then. I lived in Tucson for ten years. I saw what was going on. Putting children in jail—that’s not new. That was going on in the Bush Administration. Barack Obama tried to get immigration reform and Congress wouldn’t allow it. So people have been caught in this web of suffering, dying in the desert. They’re incredibly brave and resourceful, the people who make it. A C.E.O. of a big company once told me—when I said, “What do you look for in hiring practices?”—she said, “I look for someone who’s dealt with a lot of adversity, because they usually make a good business person.” And I thought, You should hire every immigrant who comes across the border.

Why did you decide to move to San Francisco from Tucson?

My children were coming home repeating homophobic remarks they heard at school. And they’d also heard other things, like, “If you don’t go to church, you’re going to go to Hell.” I thought, You know, I don’t need that. So I moved back to San Francisco. I wanted them to have a sense of what a community was like where you could walk to school, walk to the market. More of an urban-village experience. In Tucson, I was driving in the car for forty-five minutes to get them to school and then forty-five minutes to get them back, in a hot car. I didn’t want that life for them.

I can tell that you have a real sense of mourning over what the border used to be.

People don’t realize that there’s Mexican, there’s American, and then there’s Mexican-American. They’re three different cultures, and they all influence eachother. And they all influence our culture profoundly. The cowboy suit that Roy Rogers would wear, with the yoke shirt and the pearl buttons and the bell-bottom frontier pants and the cowboy hat—those are all Mexican. We imported it. We eat burritos and tacos, and our music is influenced a lot by Mexican music. It goes back and forth across the border all the time.

How did growing up in that hybrid Mexican-American culture shape you as a musician?

I listened to a lot of Mexican music on the radio, and my dad had a really great collection of traditional Mexican music. It made it hard for me when I went to sing American pop music, because rock and roll is based on black church rhythms, and I wasn’t exposed to that as a kid. I could only sing what I’d heard. What I’d heard was Mexican music, Billie Holiday, and my brother singing boy soprano.

So what drew you to folk rock in the sixties?

I loved popular folk music like Peter, Paul and Mary. I loved the real traditional stuff, like the Carter family. I loved Bob Dylan. And I tried to copy what I could. When I heard the Byrds doing folk rock, I thought that was what I wanted to do.

How did your recording of “Different Drum” with the Stone Poneys in 1967 come about?

It was a song I found on a Greenbriar Boys record, and I thought it was a strong piece of material. I just liked the song. We worked it up as a kind of shuffle—it wasn’t very good with the guys playing guitar and mandolin. But the record company recognized that the song was strong, too, so they had me come back and record it with their musicians and their arrangement. And I was pretty shocked. I didn’t know how to sing it with that arrangement. But it turned out to be a hit.

Do you remember hearing it on the radio for the first time?

Yeah. We were on our way to a meeting at Capitol Records, in an old Dodge or something, and I was jammed in the back with our guitars. Then the engine froze, and the car made this horrible metal-on-metal shriek. We had to push it to the nearest gas station, half a block away. The man was looking at the car saying it’ll never run again, and we were saying, “What will we ever do in Los Angeles with no car?” And from the radio playing in the back of the garage we could hear the opening of “Different Drum.” We heard which radio station it was on, KRLA, so I knew it was a hit, if they played it on the L.A. stations.

What are your memories of the Troubadour, in West Hollywood?

That’s where you went to hang out. We would go to hear the local act that was playing, or there’d be someone like Hoyt Axton or Oscar Brown, Jr., or Odetta. Nobody was anything particular at the time. We were all aspiring musicians. The Dillards were there. The Byrds hung out there. And then it started to be people like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor. Carole King would play there. When Joni Mitchell played, she played two weeks. I think I saw every single night.

In your book, you talk about being with Janis Joplin there and trying to figure out what to wear onstage.

Oh, I never could figure out what to wear. I grew up wearing Levi’s and a T-shirt or a sweater and cowboy boots or sneakers. And that’s what I left home with, and that’s what I wound up with. In the summer we’d cut the legs off the Levi’s and they were Levi’s shorts. When I got my Cub Scout outfit, that was a real change for me.

You say that you and Janis Joplin couldn’t figure out how to fit in—you didn’t know whether to be earth mothers or whatever.

We didn’t know whether we were supposed to cook and sew and embroider. Roles were being redefined. There were a lot of earth-mama hippie girls who knew how to do that stuff.

There’s a clip in the documentary of you being interviewed in 1977, and you talk about how rock-and-roll stars become alienated and are surrounded by managers who are willing to indulge them, and that’s how people wind up with drug problems.

They got involved with drugs because they felt isolated. Stardom is isolating. There are a whole bunch of people that you’re hanging out with who are trying to become musicians. And some were chosen and some were not, and it becomes a difficult relationship with the people who weren’t chosen. Sometimes they’re resentful, sometimes you feel uncomfortable. It’s like Emmylou Harris has in a song: “Pieces of the sky were falling in your neighbor’s yard but not on you.” The adulation made people feel disconnected. I also think that some people’s brain chemistry is more vulnerable to addiction. I was lucky. Mine was not.

David Geffen says that you had an issue with diet pills.

I had no issue with that. I just took them when I needed them. I didn’t like it. If I ate, I’d have to take a diet pill. It wasn’t something I did for pleasure.

There’s been a lot of looking back this year at the summer of 1969, with these big anniversaries of the moon landing and Woodstock and the Manson murders. What do you remember about that summer?

When Woodstock happened, I was in New York. I remember getting all the reports from people like Henry Diltz and Crosby, Stills & Nash. They’d come back with stories of everybody being in the mud. It sounded like a good thing to have survived, but I’m glad I didn’t go up there. Overflowing toilets and no food is not my idea of a fun time. I was playing some club—probably the Bitter End.

When the Manson family came through, they managed to murder my next-door neighbor, Gary Hinman. I was lucky I wasn’t home that night—they may have come for me. We knew those girls, Linda Kasabian and maybe Leslie Van Houten, too. I lived in Topanga Canyon at the time, and they would hitchhike, and they would talk about this guy Charlie at the Spahn Ranch. But I didn’t know him personally. We knew it was kind of a bad scene. But, when we found out how bad of a scene it was, we were horrified.

People must have been really scared before they were captured.

Oh, everybody was freaked out. We weren’t sure at the time whether the Gary Hinman murder was connected to the other murders, but we found out soon enough.

The music of that era was so intertwined with politics. How do you feel that compares with popular music these days? Is music addressing political upheaval?

Oh, I think so. Especially hip-hop. But I wish there was a little bit more political activism. I’m waiting for the Reichstag to burn down, you know? Because I was interested in the Weimar Republic, I’ve always been aware that culture can be overwhelmed and subverted in a very short time. All of German intellectual history—Goethe and Beethoven—was subverted by the Nazis. It happened in a thirty-year span and brought German culture to its knees. And it’s happening here. There’s a real conspiracy of international fascism that wants to defeat democracy. They want all the power for themselves, and I think that suits Donald Trump right now. He’d like to be a dictator.

In going through your history, I’ve noticed you’ve been selectively outspoken. There’s an interview from 1983 where a talk-show host in Australia asks you about deciding to perform in South Africa under apartheid, and you give this speech about how if you didn’t play anywhere with racism you wouldn’t be able to play in the American South or Boston. You also take shots at Ronald Reagan and Rupert Murdoch. As a popular performer, was there a cost to speaking out?

I never talked onstage for about fifteen years. But there were certain causes that we as a musical community united against, and one of them was nuclear power. We did a lot of No Nukes concerts—James Taylor, me, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt—and if it was a particular cause that I was in favor of. I did what I could to help, but I don’t think my focus was particularly political. If somebody asked, I was perfectly happy to give my opinion.

I also found a clip from 1995 where you confronted Robin Quivers, Howard Stern’s co-host, on the “Tonight Show” about her association with Stern. Do you remember what upset you so much?

Well, first of all, I never heard Howard Stern on the radio. I had no idea who he was. I didn’t have a television. I didn’t know who Robin Quivers was. But it had just been on the news that day, what he had said about—oh, the girl singer.

Selena? He said “Spanish people have the worst taste in music” and played her music with gunshots in the background.

Selena, yeah. And it just offended me. As a Mexican-American, it just offended me that he would say such a horrible thing about someone’s dead daughter. I didn’t realize that Howard Stern made a career out of making unfortunate remarks about other people. And I didn’t know what Robin Quivers was like. I didn’t know anything about it. I just went, “Hey, that really offended me.” It made me angry. I didn’t realize what kind of a hornets’ nest I’d stepped into.

Did you get any reaction from him after that?

Oh, yeah. He said horrible things about me.

Going back to your performing career, in the documentary, your former manager Peter Asher says that you would see people whispering at your concerts and imagine that they were saying, “She’s the worst singer I’ve ever heard.” Were you really that insecure?

I just didn’t feel like I could quite sing well enough. It was best when I forgot about everything and just thought about the music, but it took me a long time to get there. I didn’t want to see people that I knew in the audience. I didn’t like to see the audience, actually. I couldn’t understand why they’d come. It’s a different relationship than singers like Taylor Swift have. I think it’s a little bit healthier that they embrace their audience and sort of feel like everybody’s on the same team. We were encouraged in the sixties to think of us and them. The hippies started that whole tribal thing, and it was the straights against the hippies. It was unhealthy.

How did you overcome your self-doubt?

I’d just say, “Breathe and sing.” As long as I pulled my focus back to the music, I was fine.

Your relationship with Jerry Brown is covered in the documentary and in your book, but not your relationships with some other prominent people, like Jim Carrey and George Lucas. Is there a reason for that?

I was writing about the music. They didn’t have anything to do with my musical process.

What did Jerry Brown contribute to your musical process?

Well, he was there when Joe Papp [the founder of the Public Theatre and Shakespeare in the Park] called saying that they wanted me for “H.M.S. Pinafore.”. But Jerry [gave me the message] wrong—it was actually “The Pirates of Penzance,” which I didn’t know.

Do you keep in touch with him?

Yeah. We’re friends. We’ve always been friends. He came over last Christmas.

What do you talk about?

Water in California. He said when he retires he wants to study trees and California Indians. I gave him my tree book, “The Hidden Life of Trees.” There’s a new history of water use in California that’s fantastic. It’s called “The Dreamt Land.” It’s like John McPhee-level writing. It’s really worth it for the writing alone.

The press always made such a big deal about the fact that you never got married.

I didn’t need to get married. I’m not sure that anybody needs to get married. If they do, I’m on their side. But I never needed to get married. I had my own life.

I have to admit, I was born in the eighties and I discovered you through “The Muppet Show.” What can you tell me about working with Kermit?

I had a crush on Kermit, so it was a problem because of Miss Piggy. He was her property. But we had a really good time on that show. There’s something extraordinarily creative about puppeteers. They’re fascinating, because when they do all their acting, they can’t let it go through their own body. I think they’re just loaded with talent. I loved watching them. It was a very coöperative experience. They let me help them with the story and the songs.

What was your contribution to the story?

This crush that I had on Kermit, they developed into a little storyline where Miss Piggy and I have a confrontation.

She seems like a very formidable rival.

She was. She was nasty! She locked Kermit in a trunk.

Because you’re a singer but not a songwriter, so much of your artistic expression comes through your choice of material. How did you choose songs for “Heart Like a Wheel,” including the title song by Anna and Kate McGarrigle?

I was just ambushed by that song. I was riding with Jerry Jeff Walker in a cab, and he said, “I was at the Philadelphia Folk Festival and I heard these two girls singing—they were sisters. They sang a really good song. You should hear it.” He sang me the first verse—“Some say the heart is just like a wheel / When you bend it, you can’t mend it / But my love for you is like a sinking ship / And my heart is on that ship out in mid-ocean”—and I just thought they were the most beautiful lyrics I’d ever heard. I said, “You have to send me that song.” And I get this tape in the mail, reel to reel, with just piano and a cello and the two girls singing their beautiful harmonies. The manager I had at the time said it was too corny. Somebody said it would never be a hit. And I don’t think it was ever a radio single, but it was a huge song for me. I sang it all the way through my career.

Were you surprised by the songs from that album that became hits?

I was surprised anything of mine was successful, because it always seemed so hodge-podge. I just tried different songs that didn’t necessarily have anything to do with each other, but which expressed a real urgent feeling that I just had to express. “You’re No Good” was an afterthought. We needed to have an uptempo song to close the show with, and that was a song I knew from the radio.

What were the biggest challenges in becoming a public figure?

Not having the ability to observe other people, because people are observing you. I had to keep my head down all the time. It was kind of excruciating. I still feel that way. I don’t like to be on the spot. Also, relationships were hard, because I was always on the bus.

In an interview from 1977, you said, “I think men have generally treated me badly, and the idea of a war between the sexes is very real in our culture. In the media, women are built up with sex as a weapon and men are threatened by it as much as they are drawn to it, and they retaliate as hard as they can.” Do you remember what you were talking about?

No, I don’t! I have to say that when I look at my whole career, over all, what counted the most was whether you showed up and played the music. I saw it happen with Emmylou, and I saw it happen with Joni Mitchell. Joni Mitchell was threatening to everybody. She could play better. She could sing better. She looked better. She could just do it all. But it’s true, there was a certain amount of chauvinism.There weren’t a lot of girls in the business who were doing what I was doing, so my friendship with Emmylou Harris became so important.

Did you find that there were things that were harder for you as a woman than for your male contemporaries?

Well, I had to do makeup and hair. That’s a lot, because that’s two hours of the day that you could spend reading a book or learning a language or practicing guitar. Guys just shower and put on any old clothes. And then there were high heels. I have extra ankle bones in each foot, and high heels were agonizing. I used to wear them onstage, kick them off, hide my feet behind the monitors, and find my shoes again before I had to leave the stage.

At the height of your rock-and-roll fame, you decided to do Gilbert and Sullivan. What drew you to that?

My sister, when she was eleven and I was six, I guess, sang “H.M.S. Pinafore” in her junior high school. My mother had a book of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas on piano, and somehow I learned the songs. I heard my sister practicing them. So, when I heard of “The Pirates of Penzance,” I knew what Gilbert and Sullivan was.

Was part of you tired of being a rock star?

Part of me was very tired of it. I was singing loud in halls that didn’t sound like they were built for music. I liked the idea of a proscenium stage. I think a proscenium has a lot to do with focussing your attention. A theatre is a machine built to focus your attention and allow you to dream. You’re hypnotized, in a way, and the person onstage is your champion, is telling your story. You find emotions you didn’t realize you had.

Throughout the eighties, you experimented wildly with genre, everything from Puccini to the Great American Songbook to Mexican canciones. I’m sure your record label was surprised when you said, “I want to make an album of Mexican folk music.”

Well, before that, I wanted to do American standard songs, and they said, “No, it won’t work.” In fact, Joe Smith [the chairman of Elektra/Asylum Records] even came to my house to beg me not to do it. He said, “You’re throwing your career away.” I’d been away so long working on Broadway.

Were you worried that your fans wouldn’t go along with the standards, either?

I didn’t worry about it until after we made the record [“What’s New”] and we were opening at Radio City Music Hall. And I realized, all of a sudden, people might not show up. They really might hate it. I was ordering matzo-ball soup from the Carnegie Deli next door, and it gave me the shakes so bad that I could barely stand when I got onstage. I was holding hands with Nelson Riddle in the wings—he was nervous, too. He said, “Don’t let me down, baby.” I said, “I’ll do my best.” He was the best of those arrangers—worked with Rosemary Clooney and Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. He wrote beautiful charts for me. I was really lucky to have him. I went back to my apartment that night and just smiled, because we had gotten away with an evening of American standard songs.

When I see something now like Lady Gaga recording a standards album with Tony Bennett, it seems like she owes you a debt.

Well, she owes me nothing. She’s got enough talent to make it on her own. But, up until then, attempts by female pop artists to go back and do standards had not been successful. And Joan Baez had tried to record in Spanish, and that didn’t work. It depends on what the audience is expecting of you. When I did Mexican songs, I brought in a whole new audience. I played the same venues, but it was grandmothers and grandchildren. People brought their kids. And the standards audience was older—they were in their fifties and sixties, which seemed impossibly old to me at the time.

Is it true that you recorded “Canciones de Mi Padre” at George Lucas’s recording studio, Skywalker Sound?

The second album, “Mas Canciones.” I chose it because they have a big scoring stage. It has good acoustics that you can tune with the wooden panels on the side. There was a lot of room ambience. Mariachi’s a folk orchestra, and it was a good orchestra sound. It’s hard to find.

You also collaborated with Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton. Do you keep in touch with them?

Emmy comes out to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, which is a bluegrass festival here in San Francisco, so I see her about once a year. She comes over to my house. We used to sing together. Now she brings her laundry and we talk. When you’re on the road, you always have extra laundry.

Have you kept up with Dolly?

Emmy and I presented her an award recently, and I hadn’t seen her in a while. I don’t think she realized I’m as disabled as I am. She threw her arms around me, and I kept saying, “Dolly, watch out! You’re going to knock me down!” She thought I was kidding. I nearly fell down. I grabbed onto the podium that her award was on and knocked it to the ground. It was made out of glass and it broke. “Congratulations, here’s your award—smash! You get to take the pieces home.”

If you could wave a magic wand and record one more album, what would be on it?

It would be an eclectic mix. There’s a song called “I Still Have That Other Girl,” written by Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach, that I always wanted to record. And there’s a Mexican song called “Paloma Negra” I always wanted to record. I’d record all those songs that I didn’t get around to.

It's called living in a third shithole country where you are lucky if you have drinkable water in your house. I can buy groceries because of my scholarship, I'm not a white rich girl that has the luxury of choosing and read every single food label in order to secure it's 100% vegan, I can't choose those expensive plant based products.

And I'm not talking about you, but it's a known pattern that people call out women for not caring enough about XYZ causes.

We who? I have seen so many times vegan people get malnourished and still don't make the connection between their state and what they eat.

For being someone so full of compassion, is astounding that you can't see out of your bubble and see that people can't dedicate their lifes to multiple causes all the time.

Call them out and tell them to include women's rights in their fight, tell that social worker who is caring abused children that she should give a fuck about animals, and women, and disabled, and immigrants, and slaves and climate change. Do it.

????? I don't know why you need to strech every single thing to make them fit with terrible stuff. A person eating eggs is not the same as a man having intercourse with an animal.

If it is not about exploiting women's socialization and empathy, then tell the slave and the immigrant to care about climate change too. Because anyone else in the world is allowed to care only about themselves but women.

I don't get the whole feminist vegan ecofriendly package.

We women have to liberate ourselves, not save the entire world.
