Photo Gone Wrong | L.Norris
Summary: McLaren ask Y/N to take a picture of Lando and Oscar holding their first and third place trophy. What could go wrong?
Warnings: mention of a bloody nose
______________________________________________________________
The McLaren garage was the place to be after the Singapore Grand Prix. "Y/N" Someone called as you walk out of the garage. You stop and see one of the social media managers calling you over, Oscar and Lando close by her side.
"hey what's up" you say walking over to them. "Would you be able to take a picture of the boys holding their trophies for the McLaren socials." You nod and start to get your camera out. "Sure any particular way" You ask. "yeah were thinking like this one" the social media managers says getting out her phone and showing you a picture the boys had taken a few weeks ago.
"oh uh ok" you says not so sure about this picture many things could go wrong. "What? What's wrong you seem hesitant" the social media manager asks "I just what if one of them drop the trophy and break my camera or worse me" you state "come on Y/n don't you trust us" Lando says "You not so much. Oscar he's fine" Lando rolls his eyes. "Come on Y/n" Lando begs "i'll make sure he doesn't so anything" Oscar says "fine" you agree. You get down on the ground and point your camera up "Ok lean in" you say. Lando grips his trophy and nearly drops it causing you to squeal and turn away. Lando started laughing, "Lando" you complain "alright alright i'm serious" he says as the two lean in.
You snap a couple photos and before anyone could react Lando had dropped his trophy. He scrambled to catch it but even with his fast reflexes it was too late. The trophy came to a crash against your face the end hitting just perfectly in between your camera and cheek hitting your nose full on. You toss your camera aside not caring about it and sitting up grabbing your nose, crying out in pain. Blood started to gush out. "Oh my gosh Y/n I am so sorry I didn't mean it" Lando panicked. "I think, I think you broke my nose" you says as tears started to pool and fall. "We need a medic" Lando calls and Oscar takes off towards the medical center at least that's where you hopped he was going. "I am so sorry. what can I do?" Lando asks "Can you maybe get me a towel or something?" you ask holding your bloody nose that was really hurting. Lando looks around and spots a bag a few meters away he opens it and hands you a shirt. A crowd started to form and you started to get embarrassed. You tried not to put too much pressure as if you did it hurt.
A few minutes later Oscar came rushing over a few of the medical team right behind him. At that point your hands and the t-shirt you had were covered in blood. "Hey can you tell me your name" one Medic asks "Y/n" she says as the medic takes the cloth away. "ok that looks pretty bad" He says going into his bag and removing the t-shirt the medic poked around your nose making you flinch any time he'd touch a tender spot. "I'm sorry" he'd say.
Once the medic was finished he handed you some tissues to catch the blood. "Ok now we are going to get you onto the stretcher and get you down to the center" you nod as the three medics helped you up and then onto the stretcher. Lando walked up to you "Y/n i am so sorry" Lando apologies once again. "It's fine Lando I'll be fine" you said as they wheeled you away Lando following close behind.
They get to the medical center where you are put on some heavy medication to help with the pain as well as a blood thinner to help with stopping the bleeding. "Y/n we are going to take you to the hospital to get you checked out and make sure it's not a serious break from the looks of it you'll be fine will just have to wear a splint for about 2 weeks" "ooookkkk" you nod lazily the pain meds really doing some work.
The medic leaves to get the ambulance ready. "Sorry about your shirt" you said holding out the bloody McLaren shirt. "It's ok it's not even mine" he said pushing it back into your lap "oh good" you say and closes your eyes. "Y/n" Lando says "mmhm" "I am so sorry" you groaned tired of hearing him apologise "ugh stop apologising" "I can't help it. I feel really bad" you sighs "I'll be fine Lando" the medic comes back and start loading you into the van. Lando once again by your side. In the ambulance the bleeding had finally stopped and your nose was really swollen and starting to bruise.
Once at the hospital the doctor did confirm you had a broken nose but it wasn't severe enough that you needed surgery just needed to set it back and keep a splint on for 2 weeks.
Lando was very sweet the entire time, he waited the entire time. Even after you begged him to leave to celebrate his win with the team he didn't.
Luckily for you there was a 3 week break in between Singapore and Austin. When the Austin race did roll around you didn't have to wear a splint anymore and the swelling had gone so now it was just really bruised, but many still asked what had happened.

Let me set the scene:
It's the Vegas Grand Prix, 2023. Lando has his crash, is high as a bloody kite in the hospital. Lando sees his nurse and I'd convinced he's dead bc 'why else would there be a legit angel?'
This is super short and silly but I absolutely adore this request! Thank you <3
P.S. I also love this and it is possibly one of my favourite photos of him! Boy is high as balls.
The red emergency phone rang, signaling an incoming ambulance, and you answered it with a sigh. "Mercy General Emergency Department," you answered as you clicked your pen and got the handover sheet ready to write down the patient information.
"Male…24…high-speed crash into a wall," you repeated back to dispatch that alerted you to the incoming patient, hating that you’d be spending what was left of your shift dealing with someone’s drunken antics or stupidity that had crashed them into a wall.
"How fast was he going?" you asked, not expecting the answer.
"180."
"Come again? 180mph and he’s still alive?" you repeated, not being able to hide the shock. "Do we need blood? X-Ray? Trauma surgeons and blood on standby? No one has called ahead." You suddenly woke up from the usual lull you felt around this time during your shift, your mind suddenly in full trauma mode.
"No, just precautionary checks. Patient is a Formula One driver and has been cleared by track medics, but they want a second opinion at the hospital and some scans in case."
Then it hit you…you followed F1 and had done for a few years. You’d been following the race on your phone during your breaks and knew Lando had crashed out during turn 14.
"Okay. Thank you, have you got an ETA?"
Dispatch relayed the time of arrival that gave you enough time to announce it over the tannoy and for your team to gather in one of the trauma rooms. You also called in security because you knew the press would be vultures all over this.
With the trauma room ready, you all waited for the arrival of your VIP patient. If you were being truthful, you were a little nervous at meeting one of your celebrity crushes but also knew you needed to keep it professional. What you didn’t expect was the goofy look on Lando’s face as he was wheeled on a stretcher into the room.
As soon as the paramedic crew had handed over and you’d transferred him over to the bed, you began attaching him to monitors and got your list of investigations and tests you’d need to perform from the doctor in charge.
The paramedics had clearly dosed him up with the good meds as he stirred in and out of consciousness, his eyes glassy and the goofy smile still plastered on his face every time his eyes met yours.
You woke him up once again, ready to check his pupils and GCS once more when he was a little more alert than he’d been since he arrived.
"Woah…am I dead?" his voice came out slightly slurred.
"The heart monitor beeping next to you would say otherwise," you laughed in reply.
"Are you sure, because why else would an actual angel be standing in front of me right now?"
You couldn’t help another laugh that escaped your lips as you watched him try to focus on you.
"And that would be the morphine," you fiddled with his IV and checked the fluids running before you input a few more things on his chart.
“I don’t think it is…” he slurred once more, “I know an angel when I see one.”
You were about to reply when you looked up from his chart and saw he’d fallen asleep, his head against his chest. You got up from your seat and adjusted his pillows so his neck wouldn’t be even more painful in the morning.

Hey! Please can you do a Lorraine x fem reader. where instead of Ed the reader is married to Lorraine and is her partner, they are doing an investigation and reader gets hurt? Totally fine if not x🥰
Investigation gone wrong
Lorraine warren x fem!reader
Warning: demons, scary, ambulance, injury
You and your wife Lorraine was doing a investigation where it seemed pretty normal at first until Lorraine gave you a nudge on your shoulder. You pulled her aside to see what was wrong and she gave you a frightening look. “This house isn’t right y/n. It’s evil. At first it seemed like it was trying to hide it or hide itself but it’s slowly starting to reveal itself to me and I don’t like it. I don’t know what to do.” Lorraine explained and you felt your body get chills all over.
Lorraine usually could handle these types of spirits but it seems like this one was getting to her and you didn’t like that. “We will be fine my love. If we need to we can go ahead and leave if you want.” You reassured you and she nodded her head quickly. The two of you returned to the family and told them what was happening which made the more worried than before when they contacted the two of you. When you were packing up and about to leave, you felt something watch you and all of a sudden you let out a scream as your back hit the floor.
You see a shadow coming towards you and soon it was over your body as you couldn’t catch your breath. You hear Lorraine in the background praying and screaming, trying to banish it. It seemed to work because the shadow just evaporated into nothingness and you felt your breath start to slowly come back but you let out a cry as you tried to move. Lorraine rushed over to you with tears streaming down your face as she yelled out for someone to call the ambulance. “Lorr it h-hurts..” you whimpered out as your own tears starting streaming down your red face.
Lorraine shushed your quietly as she held your head in her hands as she heard drew call the ambulance. “They will be here soon baby it’s okay I got you…” she whispered as she held you. In a few minutes the paramedics were here and they put you on a stretcher. Lorraine went with you and rode with you inside the ambulance as they took you to the hospital. It took an hour in total to get you to the hospital, to rush you in and to hook you all up. The doctor came in and told you and Lorraine that you have messed up your back pretty bad and that they will prescribe you some medicine.
They told you to lay off for a while and if you do need to work then you need to take a wheel chair or walker with you at all times. You will be wearing a back brace too as well as do some physical therapy just to make sure nothing else gets worse and to make your back stronger again. In a few hours you were released and got sent back home. Lorraine immediately put you in bed since it was already late and plus you had to anyway. Lorraine went downstairs and fixed you two some dinner while you laid in bed, reading a book, well tried to. Moments later you heard your wife coming up the stairs with a tray in hand.
She puts it on your lap and sits beside you on the bed. She starts to feed you which make you giggle which makes her smile. The two of you eat your meals in silence and once you were down Lorraine grabbed the tray and went back downstairs to put it up. She came back up and started getting herself ready for bed. “Thank love for taking care of me and for dinner.” You said breaking the silence as Lorraine slipped on her dress. She turned around and gave you a soft, loving look. “Anytime baby. I’ll always take care of you. You never have to worry about that.” She says and you nod. “I will always take care of you too lorr. I love you so much.” You reply and she gets in the bed beside you and gets under the covers. “I love you most my sweet. Now get some rest okay sweetie?” She said and you nodded, carefully getting comfortable in the bed as Lorraine snuggled closer to you, the two of you falling asleep peacefully beside each other.
A/n: I hope @13thdoctor-run likes it and I hope the rest of y’all too! Remember to stay hydrated and to rest! I love y’all :) more stories coming out soon for my other characters like Natasha romanoff, Billie eilish, lady dimitrescu, Jade west, and more :)

Hospital
Based on my time in the hospital. I think I'm gonna make this a small series. Let me know what you think!!!
You were feeling miserable for weeks. You had gotten sick and then gotten over it, except for a cough. Noah was about to leave for a show and told you that you should get your cough checked out while he was gone.
Listening to Noah’s advice, you went to the Emergency Room because of the cough you had for about three weeks straight and it wasn’t going away. Once you were back in with the doctors, they listened to your lungs while you coughed and then someone brought you to the x-ray room.
When you got back to your room, the doctor came in and told you the news.
“So, you have a bad case of Pneumonia. From the x-ray, you have an abscess on your lung the size of a tennis ball,” the doctor told you.
“What’s the next step?” you questioned as you played with your fingers, nervous.
“The next step is going to the hospital to get antibiotic treatments and talk with the infectious disease specialist there and-” he droned on. You tried to listen, but the fact that you had to go to the hospital, for who knows how long, made you really scared. Bad Omens were out of town doing a show, so you were alone. Your phone was on like ten percent, and you left your things at home.
You took a deep breath, like Noah always reminds you, and you let it out while shaking. Trying not to let the tears fall, you ask, “Which hospital?”
And with that, the doctor tells you and calls for the ambulance. You were huddled into yourself trying not to cry when you heard a knock at the door. The paramedics arrived with a wheeled stretcher.
“Are you ready?” one of them asked. You nodded and started to get up. The other paramedic helped you onto the stretcher and wrapped you up in blankets to keep you warm. Still trying not to cry, you listened to one of the paramedics talk in hopes of making you feel better. You appreciated that. When you got to the ambulance, they lifted the stretcher into the back of the car and strapped it in.
It was a quick ride to the hospital. They unstrapped the stretcher from the ambulance and wheeled you to your room. Once in your bed, the nurse comes in and takes your vitals. It’s really late and you just ask if she has a charger for your phone so you can contact Noah. She returns with a phone charger and you quickly plug your phone in. The nurse leaves and you are finally alone.
You allow yourself to cry then, pulling your legs to your chest as the tears soak your knees. After a few moments, your phone makes a noise, letting you know that it charged. Wiping your face, you quickly grabbed your phone and opened up Noah’s texts. He texted you goodnight, another message asking if you were okay, and a bunch of worried messages. You pressed the call button and he answered on the first ring.
“Angel, I was worried sick. What happened? Are you okay?” he rambled.
“I’m in the hospital. I went to the Emergency Room for my cough and it turns out that I have Pneumonia with an abscess on my lung the size of a tennis ball,” you sighed.
“Oh my god. Is anyone with you? Your roommates?” he asked.
“No, they made me go alone,” you murmured.
“What?” Noah exclaimed, “Why are you alone?”
“I don’t think they care too much, to be honest,” you breathed, before letting a tear fall.
“I’m so sorry that I’m not there. I’m going to come home early. Gotta tell the guys,” Noah blathered.
The tears were turning into a waterfall, and couldn’t stop flowing as you said, “So, you’re coming home?”
“Of course, baby, I can’t leave you all alone. It might be a day or two, but I’ll be there,” he promised.
“I love you,” you declared as you wiped the flood of tears from your eyes.
“I love you too, Angel. I’ll see you soon,” Noah reassured you.

Silence - Kenny x Emery
Part of my Dark Angel of the Bullet Club series
Tag: @blxxckheart @summertimefun1982
Words: 1024
(border by)
Emery sat, curled up in a chair off to the far side, giving Kenny the space he needed while staying out of sight of the camera. She didn’t want to bother him any, especially when he had to do this video for Dynamite tomorrow. Tony asked him to record it tonight so it would be ready to play during the show, and Kenny obliged. He sat on the couch, the room on the dim side, and took a deep breath to calm himself. His tousled hair seemed more curly than usual, and Emery could see the tiredness in his eyes; she knew he wasn’t getting a lot of sleep lately with everything that had been going on, and that worried her.
As he began to speak, he didn’t look at the camera for too long of a period, looking off to the side, at the floor below him, or even at his hands almost every other sentence.
“First. I want to thank AEW for giving me the time to speak to you guys,” Kenny said, his voice low and a bit raspy, “I want to thank you fans, for your comments, your prayers, your support. I want to thank the doctors for being so quick on hand the other day. It could have been… much worse. If you guys weren’t there to help us out. You know, I speak to the bucks… almost every day, and um. We promised each other that um. This problem? That you have with us BCC. We will take care of it in the ring. We’ve all been here before. This is wrestling. These things happen.”
Emery felt her heartache the more he spoke. She could sense the unease and sadness radiating off of him as he brought up what had happened to the Bucks just a few weeks back. Seeing Matt stretchered out of the arena had almost brought her to tears. Emery had almost gone with Matt but felt conflicted knowing Kenny had an important match that night against Vikingo. Hangman had been there, at the ambulance, and for a split second, their eyes had met. He had given her a soft nod, before stopping the door from being shut and hopping in the back to be with the brothers. Knowing they had at least Hangman there with them made the guilt fade just a bit.
Kenny began to look into the camera more the longer he spoke, but he would still look off to the side occasionally.
“This is commonplace. Squeaky wheel gets the grease. You want to make a headline. We get it. You made an impact.”
Kenny lowered his head just barely, glancing for a split second in her direction before looking directly into the camera, his anger suppressed but evident in his voice.
“But when you hurt Don. When you left him lying in a pool of his own blood. With his skull split open. Concussed. When you laid your hands on Emery”
Kenny looked back down at the floor, taking a deep breath to compose himself before looking once again into the camera.
“I take it personally. And I- I get it. Don’s uh,” Kenny let a soft chuckle out, “He’s not the most likable guy. You’re not gonna see his room filled with get-well cards. Or flowers. But he’s still family. And Emery? She’s been by my side for the last eight years. I’ve seen her grow as both a professional and as a person. She’s someone I hold dear to my heart—my own angel. Family. When you mess with someone’s family. That’s when you cross the line. So, I’d love to say it’s blood for blood – but… you guys probably -want- to hear that. That’s music to your ears.”
Her heart swelled at his words, a soft smile lifting her lips as she continued to watch him.
Kenny slowly began to nod continuously as he finished, “So… it’s not gonna be blood for blood. What I’m going to do to you when I see you next? It’s gonna be much worse. Much. Much worse.”
He sat there momentarily, before reaching up and stopping the video and closing his laptop, before resting his head in his hands. Wordlessly, Emery stood up from her chair and walked over, standing behind the couch. She leaned forward, sliding her hands onto Kenny’s shoulders and gently pulling him backward, closer to her. The tension was evident in his shoulders, and as he leaned back into the couch, he let out a sigh. Her arms wrapped around his chest, and she dipped her head into the crook of his neck, both of them just enjoying the other’s company in the silence. Kenny reached up and placed his hands on her arms, slightly tilting his head onto hers.
They stayed like that for several minutes before Kenny gently tugged on her arm, a silent request for her to join him on the couch. Emery stood up and walked around to his side, sitting down beside him and allowing him to pull her legs up onto the couch. It encased him in his spot, but it helped him feel secure and safe; loved. His arms snaked around her waist, holding her close as she wrapped her arms around his neck once more, laying her head against his shoulder. The simple act, a cuddle from someone that knew the other inside and out, that cared deeply about the other, was comforting to both.
As they sat there, though, Emery’s mind was wandering to the following night. Brandon and Nakazawa were taking on BCC.
Kenny had seen the clip from BTE, where she had gotten dark and almost let the more sinister version of her Angel out. He had been worried and had asked her not to get involved; Kenny didn’t want her to get hurt. She had agreed and tossed the notion to the side—but only for his sake.
The sinister side of her was still coiled up inside of her, waiting as it lay dormant. By this time tomorrow, the Sinister Angel would be let loose and there would be no one to stop her.

next part
Y/N’s world came crashing down the moment her body went numb after trying to land a Quadruple Axel. Her vision was blurry as the medics stood above her, asking her questions that she couldn’t quite comprehend. Her breathing was heavy, and rapid as she was rolled onto a stretcher. She felt someone take hold of her ankle, untying her skate, as she cried out, “Stop! Please!”
To no ones surprise, they didn’t stop. Her ankle felt limp as they brought the stretcher up, wheeling her out of the arena. Y/N had no choice, but to watch as the lights passed by her, whines leaving her lips everytime they hit a bump.
When Y/N finally got wheeled into the back of the ambulance, her vision began blurring again, slowly losing her consciousness. She heard voices around her, as her head spun. She tried to understand the voices around her, just like she tried to keep her eyes open, but she was unsuccessful at both.
When Y/N had finally woken up, she looked around only to be met with the boring white walls of what she had assumed was a hospital room. As her eyes fluttered open, she saw her mother sitting beside her, her head down, with her hand holding onto her own. When she saw her eyes open slowly, she smiled, before saying she’d go get a doctor.
Y/N wasn’t sure how long had she had been there, or how much school she had missed. She mentally laughed to herself as she was worried about missing school. To anyone else it may have been silly, but not to Y/N. School was her escape, the same way the ice was. She never had the best home life, but being away in Michigan, a whole new state, was refreshing.
Her eyes landed on the door as her mother opened it, a doctor following close behind her. The woman smiled, as she flipped a page on her clipboard, “Mrs, Y/L/N. I’m Doctor Thomas, glad to see you awake.” Y/N gives her a small smile, before she speaks up, “How.. how long have i been here?”
The doctors eyes dropped down, as if trying to find a way to tell her, “You’ve been out for about five days. You took a major fall, resulting in you hitting your head. You’ll be out of skating until at least next year, and that’s if you attend all your physical therapy classes. You’ve been cleared of any signs of a concussion, however your ankle is definitely broken.” Y/N’s eyes began watering as the words left the doctors mouth, no skating?
It had been a whole week before Y/N was able to attend classes again. Per request of the doctor, and her mother she made sure she was a thousand percent ready to get back to classes. She was excited. Her mom had gone off back to Florida, and she could finally get back to her schooling.
So there Y/N was, a week later, on a Tuesday walking into University of Michigan with her crutches tucked tightly under her armpits. Y/N had gotten many looks on her way to English 2. Most were pity, some were worry. She ultimately decided to ignore the looks, believing they weren’t even worth a second glance.
Class hadn’t started when Y/N arrived. She took a seat towards the back of the classroom so she could easily avoid pushing her way through at the end of class on her crutches.
After Y/N had settled, a boy she had only seen around a couple of times took a seat beside her. “Hey.” Y/N looked up at the boy as he spoke. “Oh uh, hi?” the girl watched as he took a seat beside her. She glanced around the room to notice it was mostly empty, why is he sitting here?
“I’m Dylan, but you can call me Duke if you’d like.” her eyes drifted to the boy once more, scanning over him. “I’m Y/N, but you can call me Y/N.” the boy laughed at the girl, which caused a smile to overcome her features.
“Well, Y/N, i came here to say i’m sorry about what happened, you know. On the ice. I’m sure you’ve heard it a lot, but i know how much the ice can mean to one person, and you seemed to really love it.” Y/N couldn’t really place her finger on where she knew the boy from, but hearing him say he knew how much the ice could mean to someone sparked something in her brain. HOCKEY! He was on the hockey team, she was sure of it.
When she finally snapped out of her thoughts, or more so her investigation, she simply nodded. She didn’t trust herself to talk about the accident without crying, or at least a voice crack. When Dylan had taken notice of this he spoke once more, “I know we don’t know each other, but.. i, uh, i’m here if you want to talk about it, or anything, you know? Sometimes speaking to strangers is easier than speaking to someone you know.”
Her eyes moved up, meeting his, as the two of them smiled at one another softly, “Thank you, Duke. I’m sorry, but i have to ask, do i know you from somewhere? You seem really familiar.” She heard him chuckle lowly, a sense of comfort washed over her, as he sucked in a breath. “I play for the ice hockey team. Possibly seen me around, not sure. I’ve watched you preform a couple of times, maybe seen me in the crowd?” knew it. hockey.
Y/N always, always hated hockey players. She’s not too sure why, possibly the hockey player who broke her heart back in highschool. She had sworn herself off of hockey players since then. She moved around a lot growing up, so it was relatively easy for her to move on from him, or at least she told herself she had moved on.
“Yeah, probably.” Y/N turned her attention to the professor who had been speaking for a while, but she hadn’t noticed, too intrigued with the boy sat beside her. The class didn’t last much longer. She hadn’t really payed much attention to what was going on around her, as her thoughts were racing. Just as the girl finished packing up her things, the boy that had been in her thoughts spoke up, “Could i maybe, uh, get your number? I’m sorry if that’s weird, but i’ve seen you skate, and would really love to get to know you, Y/N.” She simply nodded, grabbing a sticky note, and writing her number down.
Call me sometime, Duke. I’d like to watch you skate sometime! you’re good company btw (: (000) - 000 - 0000
With that she put her pen away, folding the sticky note, handing it to him, and walking away. Of course she wasn’t going very far, very fast with the crutches that she had grown to hate tucked under her arms.

MASTERLIST
———
“Hey aunt Mer, is dad in surgery right now?” holding the phone between your shoulder and cheek you stepped out onto the sidewalk
Today's your dad's birthday and you really wanted to surprise him today, lately things have been rough on the both of you and you thought that maybe treating him to his favourite type of cake would be a great way to move forward
"He is, did you get the cake?"
"Yup I'm walking over to the hospital with it as we speak" you looked up at the lights to make sure that it changed to red before you started crossing the street, too busy talking on the phone with your aunt Meredith you hadn't noticed the car speeding towards you until it was too late
One second you were walking next you were on the laying flat on thr road. Pain flooded your senses as you laid there, your vision became a bit hazey as footsteps rushed towards you. You were about to turn your head when the familiar face of the firefighter from Station 19
"No no no, stay still, you could be seriously injured" Jack held your head in place yelling for someone to call 911. You tried to shift your leg but the shooting pain caused you to yelp in agony
"Y/N your leg is broken okay, you have to keep still" sobs wrecked through your aching body as you laid there in the middle of the road all you could think about is your dad's face
Soon enough the blairing sound of the sires came towards you and in less than no time the medics stabalised your neck and moved you onto the stretcher. An officer came to take my statement but Jack started to recall the previous events as he'd seen it happen. Warren and Hughes loaded me into the Ambulance
"Your dad is going to be pissed when he hears about this" Ben continued to take your vitals while Hughes drove us to Grey Sloan
"Can you tell me what happened?"
"I was on the phone with Meredith getting ready to cross the road, I looked up to make sure the light was red and it was. I guess the driver was speeding and didn't notice until he hit me" Ben grunted clearly upset by the information, he was about to say something when Hughes announced that we're here
The doors opened and they took me out of the ambulance, Meredith and Dr Bailey were already there waiting for me, you immediately reached for Mer's hand as they wheeled you inside. They took you into a more private room and shut the door to examine you even more
"Please don't tell my dad" you rattled as they transferred you onto the bed and started cutting your pants legs off of you to get a better look at your injury
"Y/N he's your fath-" Bailey started speaking but you cut her off
"I know Dr Bailey but it's his birthday today and this isn't exactly how I wanted to surprise him at work"
The two doctors looked at each other before returning to examine you as you trained your focus on the ceiling.
-----
After being sent for a CT scan, x-ray and having my femur set back into place I was laying on a bed with my left leg in the air as they wanted to keep me here overnight just to make sure the small bleed in my brain stops
You aimlessly flicked through the television channels as you tried to make yourself comfortable. The door to your room swung open and your father rushed in, relief washed over him seeing that you only had a broken leg and a few scratches on your arms
"Surprise!" you smiled as he came to your side, pulling you into a hug. He kissed your forehead and you could feel the droplets of his tears as they fell on you. This is exactly what your were trying to avoid but nope, they still had to let him know
"You're not allowed to go outside ever again" he joked and you chuckled, wincing in pain you clung onto his shirt glad to be in his arms
"I could've lost ya kid"
"You're not getting rid of me that easily old man" a knock came from the doorway and you both looked over, Jack stood there with a boquet of flowers and my phone in his hand
Your cheeks heated up as the cute firefighter stood there waiting for an invitation to come in, not wanting to disturb the father-daughter moment. Your dad looked down at you smirking because he knew that you had a crush on the man.
"Gibson what a surprise, come in" he walked over to you and placed the flowers on your bedside table before handing you your cracked phone
"Dr Karev, thought you might need this" holding his gaze you took the device from his grasp hoping that he doesn't pick up on the situation in front of him
"Thank you"
"Warren said that you were on the scene when the accident happened, thank you"
They shook hands and you silently shook your head wishing that this awkward moment would end. You remembered the night that Maggie was giving you the update on the relationships in the hospital and you let it slip that you had liked Jack, unaware that your dad had heard, let's just say that your dad found any moment he can to tease you about it
They were in the middle of a conversation when Meredith, Maggie, Amelia, Owen and few other doctors came in singing happy birthday with a cupcake in hand. Your dad smiled so big you thought his face was going to split in half
"Guys c'mon, you didn't have to do this" he took the cake from Mer, making a quick wish before blowing out the candle
"Well the cake was supposed to be bigger but it got ruined in the accident" you said and he looked at you, the dots slowly connecting
"You got hit trying to surprise me?"
"Yeah, I thought that with everything that's happened lately I thought that you could do with a little cheering up, didn't plan on getting ran over in the process but that's just my luck" he kissed your forehead again and the groupd gushed at the sweet moment
"Thank you monkey, I love you”

In a Heartbeat - One
Pairing: Fireman!Bucky X Reader
Summary: You’ve always been careful with your heart. With your condition, you don’t exactly have any other choice. The last time you let someone in, you paid the price. A price you don’t plan on paying again. Until Bucky comes in and shatters your carefully crafted world.
Warnings: Language, Kind of slow burn, Description of heart condition, children, mentions of death
Word Count: 2.7K
A/n: On the second day of ficmas lex will give to you: A fluffy fireman AU! Lol but in all seriousness I’ve had this idea in my head for a while now and I’m so glad I’m finally getting it written. This will be a mini series that may or may not be part of ficmas, I haven’t full decided yet. But anyway, I hope you enjoy!
~*~
When listing your worst fears, fire isn’t at the top of the list. Hell, it’s not even in the top five. Sure, fire is scary, but not as scary as the dark or spiders or heights.
Of course, it’s hard to rank your fears without having knowledge of what it’s like to be in a situation with them in the first place.
“C’mon Gladys! We need to go!” She hobbles down the stairs as fast as her little legs can carry her, looking back every now and then to make sure you’re still behind her. “You need to calm down. That heart of yours doesn’t need the strain.” You roll your eyes but you know she’s right.
Your heart thunders in your ears. You can hear it. Every single beat roaring louder than the last. It makes your chest ache and your head spin. But your pills are all the way in your apartment. All the way back up the stairs. All the way where the smoke is.
You let out a choked cough, your right hand coming up to grab at your chest where your heart is beating away at your ribs.
“Almost there, sweet thing. Maybe they’ll have those handsome firefighters again. You know, the ones from the calendar?” You nod, trying to take deep breaths and focus on what she’s saying, but it’s so very difficult.
You stumble for a moment, legs trembling before finally giving out, sending you falling to the floor in a heap.
“Go, Gladys,” you rasp, trying desperately to suck in a deep enough breath. She continues down the stairs and you let your eyes flutter closed, ears starting to ring.
Just as you’re about ready to give up, you’re suddenly being lifted into a strong pair of arms and your eyes dart open, staring up into the blue eyes of a firefighter, his yellow helmet shining bright on his head.
“Hang in there, darlin’. Got the ambulance waiting for you. Gladys says you’ve got a bad heart.” You only nod dumbly, still grabbing uselessly at the front of your shirt to alleviate the pressure on your ribs.
The next thing you know, blue eyes is laying you down on a stretcher and you’re being wheeled into the familiar interior of an ambulance.
“Stay with me here, (Y/n), okay? I’m gonna give you a shot to bring your heart rate down a bit, okay?” You squint at the voice, staring up at them before realizing who it is.
“N-Nat?” You wheeze, the sound using a lot more energy than it should.
“It’s okay. Just a little pinch and then we’ll have you in the hospital getting everything you need, okay?” You nod, eyes rolling back into your head for a moment. There’s a pinch in your arm and then your heart gradually starts to slow to a more comfortable pace, your breathing evening out with it.
Natasha gently places an oxygen mask over your face and smoothes your hair away. “You’re gonna be okay, beans. I swear.”
~*~
“You could’ve stayed home for longer, spent more time recovering.”
You send her a pointed look then shake your head, waving at the kids as they ride away on the bus. “Wanda, I’m fine. What’s it going to take to get you off my back?”
The two of you walk back into the school together, heading up the staircase towards the 1st-grade classroom the two of you share.
“What does Nat think?” You sigh and put your hands on your hips. “You know she’s overprotective. I’m fine, Wanda. Honest.”
She rolls her eyes, grabbing her purse and coat off of her chair. You grab your own stuff from your desk and try not to get too bothered by her constant pestering.
She goes to open her mouth to speak when the PA system beeps in the classroom.
“I’m sorry, Miss Maximoff? Miss (Y/l/n)? I’ve got Thomas Rogers here in the office with me. His father got called into work last minute and his ride won’t be here to pick him up for another hour. He’s asking to come back to class. Is that okay?” You and Wanda exchange glances and you quickly answer before she has a moment to decline for both of you.
“Yes! That’s totally fine! I’ve got some things I’m finishing up anyway.” The secretary thanks you and Wanda shakes her head.
“You should go home and relax, (Y/n).” You shrug off your coat and set your bag back down. “And leave Tommy alone for an hour? Not a chance. I’ll be fine. I’ve got my pills in my bag and Nat is on speed dial. Now go! You’ve been raving about this exhibit for days, I’m not going to argue with you over this.”
You hear the clamouring of Tommy climbing the stairs and running through the hallway. “Fine! But you’re gonna be leaving early on Friday!” You grin at her, “you can’t make me!” She rolls her eyes but smiles nonetheless.
“Hi, Miss Maximoff! His Miss (Y/l/n)!” You smile as the little blond boy comes running into the room.
“Hey, Tommy! Miss Maximoff’s heading out now, but you and I can work on our puzzle!” His face lights up and he runs over to the puzzle on the table at the back of the room. You wave goodbye to Wanda then walk over to help Tommy with the puzzle.
“My uncle Bucky’s comin’ to pick me up! He’s a firefighter just like my daddy!” You raise your eyebrows. “Really? Are you going to be like your daddy and your uncle Bucky?”
He nods without missing a beat. “Yup! But I don’t think I’ll be as cool as uncle Bucky though. He’s got tattoos and a metal arm! But he doesn’t talk about his arm much. But it’s so cool!”
You nod, “he sounds cool. Like he’s a real hero. You know, my neighbour Gladys-” “the one with the little dog?” You grin, loving the fact that that’s the one detail he remembers. “Yes, she’s the one with the dog named Brutus. She set her stove on fire by accident this past weekend. And I was helping her out of the apartment when some firefighters came and saved me! Firefighters are superheroes.” He giggles and shakes his head.
“How could they be superheroes when they’re normal.” You shake your head this time.
“They wear special suits and helmets, and they save people, and they’ve got a special bell that rings just for them. They sound like superheroes to me,” you say matter-of-factly. He giggles and shakes his head.
“Wait ‘till I tell uncle Sam. Daddy says his ego is big already!”
“Your daddy’s right about that. If you tell Uncle Sam that your pretty teacher thinks he’s a superhero? Well, his head will explode.” The two of you turn to the doorway to find a brunet standing there, a smile on his face.
“Uncle Bucky!” Tommy shouts, jumping up from his chair and racing to the man. The brunet stoops down just in time to catch the little blond boy as he jumps up.
“Hey, kiddo!” You stand up, smiling at the interaction and taking a moment to inspect this ‘Uncle Bucky’.
He’s got shoulder-length brown hair that’s pushed behind his ears, a beautiful bright smile that lights up the whole classroom. His eyes are the prettiest combination of a blue sky and a cloudy day, cool and calm, with vibrance and mischief. He’s wearing a long-sleeved black shirt that hugs every damn inch of his body and shows off his incredible biceps, and a pair of black pants that cling to his sinfully thick thighs.
You shake yourself from analyzing him and walk over to the two.
“I’m one of Tommy’s teacher’s, (Y/n) (Y/l/n). We weren’t expecting you to be here for another forty-five minutes.”
He extends his hand and shakes yours firmly, smiling kindly at you.
“It’s nice to meet you, (Y/n), I’m James, a friend of Tommy’s dad’s. Steve’s always late, so I’m not surprised that he told you I’d be here later. But Tommy’s told us a lot about you. He left out how beautiful you are, though.” Your eyes widen and your heart starts to race.
Tommy pulls back and looks over at you.
“Miss (Y/l/n) and I are doing a puzzle of a firehouse!! We’re almost done! Come see!” He wiggles out of his uncle’s grasp to grab him by the hand and pull him towards the table where the two of you were working.
“Slow down there, kiddo.” He chuckles. You walk after the two of them, watching as he admires the puzzle with his nephew.
“Wow! It looks great kiddo! You like doing puzzles?” Tommy nods then looks up at you. “But only with Miss (Y/l/n) ‘cause she’s really good at them and she gives me treats whenever we finish a puzzle!” Bucky looks you up and down then whispers, “yeah, I’d wanna do stuff only with Miss (Y/l/n) too.”
Your heart jumps in your chest and you smile at him, feeling beyond flattered at the fact that this God-like man is flirting with you.
“How’s about you pack your stuff up, Kiddo? We’re gonna head to my place, have some pizza and watch movies. Dad’s workin’ a night shift again.”
Tommy frowns for a moment then nods. “Okay, I guess so.” He leaves the room and heads to his cubby, obviously excited to spend time some time with his uncle.
“Hey, how you feeling?” You furrow your brows at James, trying to figure out what he means and what he knows.
“Oh shit, I should probably... that was weird. I was there, on Saturday. I was the one who picked you up after you collapsed. I brought you to the ambulance. Natasha seemed pretty panicked so I wanted to make sure you were okay.”
You look down, heart rate picking up at the fact that he witnessed such a big moment of weakness. “Um yeah, yeah I’m okay. Do you work with Nat often?” You ask, changing the subject quickly. He notices but says nothing, instead, he nods.
“Yeah, she usually works similar shifts so we end up getting to the same calls a lot of the time. And we’ve become friends. She usually comes over when Steve hosts dinner.” He pauses for a moment before his face lights up.
“Hey, you should come by some time! Any friend of Nat’s is a friend of ours.” You smile up at him and shake your head. “I don’t know, I don’t want to impose. You guys are all a tight-knit group and I’d hate to intrude. Thank you for the offer, though.”
He nods, pressing on a smile when his nephew runs back in.
“C’mon uncle Bucky! I wanna watch Superman!” You giggle and ruffle Tommy’s hair.
“You have a good evening, Tommy. I’ll see you tomorrow morning.” He nods, grinning up at you. “Bye Miss (Y/l/n)! I’ll see you tomorrow!” He grabs his uncle’s hand and tugs him to the door.
“It was lovely to meet you, James. I hope you have a good night.” He nods and smiles up at you. “You too, (Y/n). And take care of yourself.” You nod, watching them leave then hurrying to your purse to take your pills, your heart racing in your chest at the interaction.
~*~
“What’s on your mind, pal? You’ve been oddly quiet all day,” Steve notes the next night, nudging Bucky’s shoulder with his hip.
The brunet doesn’t look up from his coffee, sitting silently at the table in the small kitchen of the firehouse.
“You remember that dame that collapsed at the apartment call last weekend? The one that Nat was real worried about?” Steve pauses, looking at his friend and waiting for him to continue.
“She’s Tommy’s teacher.” Steve furrows his brows, trying to remember you at parent-teacher.
“That can’t be right. Tommy’s teacher is Wanda Maximoff.”
“Yeah, and (Y/n) (Y/l/n). You know, the same Miss (Y/l/n) that Tommy’s always raving about? The one he does puzzles with? Yeah. Same woman who collapsed in the stairwell.”
“And this is keeping you quiet why?” Steve finally asks, wanting to know the correlation.
“She’s real sweet. Seems like a really nice gal. What, with the way she treats Tommy and how Nat was so protective of her. Just hope she’s takin’ care of herself, that’s all.”
“You’re just concerned for her health? That’s why you’re uncharacteristically quiet?”
“I invited her to come to dinner with Nat sometime but she said no.”
Steve makes a sound of understanding, glad to have finally gotten to the root of the problem while also being glad that his friend was humbled and rejected for once in his life.
“There it is. The real reason for your silence. She rejected you. No big deal. Don’t let your ego get too bruised about it, okay pal? Plenty of other fish in the sea and all that.”
Bucky snorts and shakes his head.
“There’s something about her though, Steve. I wanna get to know her better, but she seems so against it.” Steve sighs and shakes his head.
“You know, we have a friend in common with her. You could always ask Nat about her, see why she’s against it. If she’s got a boyfriend or anything.” The brunet nods, taking a deep breath then grabbing his phone off of the table.
“Wait, you’re gonna ask her now?” Steve asks, shocked at how forward his friend is being. He’s never seen Bucky this intent on learning about a woman, especially one that he’s only met once.
“Well, no time like the present, right?” The blond simply chuckles, patting his friend’s shoulder before heading off to his office to fill out some paperwork.
~*~
“Hello?” You ask, answering the phone on the second ring.
“You rejected Bucky?” You frown, confused for a moment before it hits you.
“Oh! Tommy’s uncle! No. He said I could go with you to the dinner’s Steve sometimes hosts but I don’t want to impose.”
Natasha groans loudly from the other line, and you swear you can hear her banging her head against a wall.
“He was asking you out on a date, (Y/n)! A date! He probably thought you’d be more comfortable around me for the first time which is why he didn’t ask you out to dinner or something! Go out with him! I think you guys will really hit it off!”
You sigh heavily and shake your head. “He seems like a sweet guy, but I’m not looking for a relationship right now Nat. Don’t you remember what happened the last time I went out with a guy? I don’t exactly want a repeat of that. And I don’t think you want that either.”
She’s quiet, no doubt remembering the terrifying phone call she received after a date gone terribly wrong. She’d had to rush over and quite literally save your life.
“Okay, so last time it didn’t work out, but Bucky’s different. He’s sweet and gentle and so kind. He’d take good care of you.”
“Nat, last time I gave a guy a chance I almost died. I'm not exactly wanting any more near-death experiences. Especially not at the hands of men. Saving Gladys, that's worth the fear and the pain. But a man? No thanks.”
Nat sighs heavily, squeezing her eyes shut at how stubborn you are. “Please (Y/n), give him a chance. He might surprise you. I’ve been friends with him for a while and he’s one of the best people I know.” You shake your head, trying not to get frustrated with her.
“Nat, I don’t want surprises, okay? I want to continue with what I know because what I know isn't dangerous. I get it, you mean well and you want me to be happy, but I’m perfectly happy the way I am, with the life I’m living. I don’t need anything new and I certainly don’t need any surprises. Now, I’ve gotta go, but I’ll talk to you later.”
She sighs, knowing you’re ending the conversation because you don’t want to get worked up about it. “Alright. Bye, beans.” She sets her phone down and takes a deep breath.
She feels bad, but not enough to drop the subject completely. She’s determined to make you see what a good guy Bucky is, whether you want to or not.

Not a Minute More: Part 5
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x f!MC
Word Count: 2.2k
Warnings; Rating: Severe bodily injury, Mentions of blood, Angst; Mature, 18+
Premise: Everyone is in the fight to save lives and they finally find out what happened to Serena.
Author’s Note: This is very heavy - I apologize in advance 😭 Thank you to my girl @choiceskatie for pre-reading 😘 I hope you enjoy and thank you for reading 💖
~ Monday, 3:00pm ~
The explosion at Harvard labs reverberated throughout the campus and the surrounding suburb. The ER is swamped, an all hands on deck situation. Ambulance after ambulance arrives, wheeling in more patients before departing. Doctors and nurses are being pulled every which way, trying to help as many patients as promptly as possible. But they’re quickly becoming overwhelmed. Empty boxes of sterile gloves line the walls, medical equipment wrappers scatter the floor. They can barely hear each others’ shouts over the cries and less severe injuries are left unattended as the dire patients are intubated, defibrillated, or ushered off to an OR.
Ethan, Naveen, and Serena’s friends are on the ER floor, moving as quickly as they can, doing as much as they can, hoping their training and expertise is enough. But every time someone enters the hospital, they can’t help but pause for a beat and stare, hoping it’s her.
~ 4:00pm ~
Patients are referred to by their room number, blurring together. Everyone is exhausted, limbs heavy, grabbing yet another cup of coffee to keep going.
“Incoming!” A handful of nurses and doctors leave their stable patients and rush to the entrance, receiving the new bout of admittees.
“What’ve we got?”
“Two individuals, one male, one female, recovered just outside one of the classified Harvard labs. They’re unconscious, but stable. We didn’t see any obvious injuries, but that doesn’t rule out anything internal. The site of the explosion just cleared enough for us to work our way there,” one of the EMTs respond.
Ethan’s ears perk up at this new piece of information, but before he can corner the EMT, there’s another shout.
“We need an OR room stat!!!” Everyone turns towards the automatic doors at the familiar voice.
Rapidly pushing the side of a stretcher, is Rafael, his face ashen.*
Reclined on the stretcher, is Serena.
Ethan feels his world stop, the noise and hurried movements of the ER fading to black as his eyes trail over her. She’s covered in blood, drifting in and out of consciousness, and breathing through an oxygen mask. There’s several visible gashes on her head and body, but the most alarming thing is the large piece of metal protruding from the side of her abdomen.
She slowly turns her head towards him, as if she can sense his presence nearby.
As they lock eyes, he regains his senses, and rushes to her side.
While the paramedics continue to push the stretcher, he reaches for her hand and clutches it over his heart. "Baby, can you hear me?!"
She blinks groggily at him, acknowledging his words.
"H—," she swallows. "...Hurts," she manages to squeak out.
He nods continuously, his other hand reaching up to brush her blood-matted hair away from her face. "I know, baby, I know. Help is on the way. Until then, I need you to stay awake, okay?" He lifts her hand and kisses it. "Look at me, focus on me, and stay here with me," he urges. He relaxes a fraction of an inch when he feels her lightly squeeze his hand.
"Dr. Ramsey, I need you to step back!"
He shakes his head furiously. "I'm scrubbing in."
"The hell you are! We both know you can't be in there." Harper watches him closely. He's hunched over the stretcher, keeping pace, knuckles white from gripping Serena’s hand, eyes never leaving her face.
Harper sighs and her voice softens just a touch. "Let me do my job."**
He knows Harper is right, but Serena’s eyes are searching his and the thought of leaving her side makes him sick.
"E…"
"I'm here, I'm right here," he responds, tapping their entwined hands over his heart, hoping she can feel the heart that beats for her.
"I lo—," she lets out a breath and her eyes close.
"Rookie?" Her head lolls to the side.
"SERENA!!" He squeezes her hand multiple times, but her hand remains limp in his grasp.
As they push through the doors to the OR, her hand is ripped away from his. He reaches for her, but is stopped by Naveen and a few security guards he called for backup.
"LET ME THROUGH!! SERENA!!!" His voice cracks over her name. He continues to fight, leaving the security guards no choice but to drag him back towards the ER entrance.
Naveen stands in front of him. "ETHAN! You're not in the right state to be in the OR! Serena needs you to trust in Harper and her team. She needs you to be here when she wakes up! And you can't do that if I have to lock you down!"
Naveen takes in the man before him. Ethan's normally perfectly coiffed hair is in disarray, strands falling in his eyes. Cheeks flushed from the effort of screaming and battling the guards' hold. Hands and clothes covered in blood. Serena’s blood.
Naveen's heart plummets at the realization and it aches for the man he's come to consider a son.
Ethan stares down Naveen, chest heaving. After a few seconds, he gives a curt nod. Naveen waves his hand and the guards let go.
As soon as Ethan has range of motion, he walks to the nearest wall, and punches it. He walks away in a huff, leaving a room full of stunned individuals, and a gaping hole in the wall.
~ 8:45pm ~
Ethan sits with his head hung low in the waiting room, elbows resting on his bouncing knees, hands clenched together. Different people have come through, taking turns checking on him. He only mumbles or moves his head in response. The assortment of food and drinks brought to him remain untouched. He refuses to go home, sleep, or even change out of his bloodied clothes. Each time there's slight movement in the direction of the OR entry, he immediately turns towards it, only to be disappointed.
Naveen has been watching from afar, waiting to take his turn. He meanders over, silently taking a seat next to Ethan. He leans back in his chair, lacing his fingers over his stomach. He sits calmly, patiently.
After ten minutes, Ethan lets out a shaky breath.
"She needed me," he whispers, barely loud enough to be heard.
Naveen remains quiet, waiting for Ethan to continue.
“She left me a voicemail… said she was scared, that she wanted to hear my voice. I’m supposed to be her protector, but I didn't even pick up the phone.” He buries his head in his hands.
Naveen leans forward, gently placing a hand on Ethan's shoulder.
"My boy. You couldn't possibly have known what was going to transpire today. You can't hold yourself responsible. Don't think I haven't seen the way you look at her, treat her. How you're always standing slightly behind her, a pillar of support during patient interactions, ready to step in if need be. How you consistently have a gentle hand on her, guiding her through the busy corridors. How you wait to leave together so she doesn't have to take the T,*** despite the fact that your shift ended hours earlier. You do protect her, every single day."
"But when she needed me most!” He shakes his head. “I wasn't there. I failed her. Miserably.” He runs his hands through his hair.
"She is everything to me, Naveen, everything. She's shown me what it means to be loved unconditionally, that vulnerability isn't a weakness. I no longer see the world in strictly black and white, or even in shades of grey. I see hues of red, purple, green, the whole damn rainbow, all because of her. She's made me a better mentor and doctor, a better son, a better man. I can’t even imagine where, or who, I’d be now without her. I wasted so much time running from my feelings, when committing to her has been the best decision I've ever made.”
He takes a steadying breath.
"She's the love of my life and now… not only may I never get the chance to tell her, but I also may never get to see our future together," his voice cracks and tears stream down his face.
He swivels his head slowly to face Naveen. "I can't lose her. I just can't."
Naveen nods solemnly. "I’m worried too; I don’t want to lose her either. One of the best surgeons in the country is leading her case. You know Harper and her team will do everything they can and we know Serena is one hell of a fighter. She has to be, to have gotten past your walls and to deal with you on a daily basis,” he teases.
It does the trick, as Ethan chuckles through his tears, nodding in agreement.
“She really is something, isn’t she?”
“She really is,” Naveen responds with a twinkle in his eyes. “And that’s another reason why I have faith. She's a warrior, having fought so long for you, for your relationship, and she knows you’re out here, waiting for her, waiting to be reunited and happy together. She wouldn’t give up now.”
Naveen locks eyes with his protégé.
“The two of you? The story is far from over. I know that in my soul.”
Ethan holds Naveen’s determined gaze, drawing strength from it, and sits up a little straighter.
“Thank you, Naveen. It means more than you know. And… I’ll take care of the hole in the wall,” Ethan grimaces.
“Don’t worry about it, my boy. I’m just relieved you didn’t do more damage,” he laughs. “And if we’re being completely honest, I’d be more shocked if you hadn’t punched a wall.”
Naveen gives Ethan a wink before he stands and walks back towards his office, leaving Ethan shaking his head in amusement, feeling a bit lighter and more hopeful.
~ Tuesday, 1:30am; 1 Day Since Attack ~
Ethan had finally dozed off, albeit uncomfortably, in a waiting room chair, when he felt a petite hand gently shaking him awake. He lifted his head and opened his eyes, coming face-to-face with Harper. He bolts up.
“Where is she? How is she?” Ethan’s eyes are frantic, searching Harper’s face for any sign of information.
She remains silent for a few beats.
“She’s currently being moved to the ICU.”
“She’s alive?”
Harper nods. “She’s alive.”
Before Ethan can breathe a sigh of relief, Harper continues.
“But Ethan… it was really bad. The piece of metal in her body was larger than we thought. It spanned from her kidney to her lungs. It was only two centimeters away from puncturing her heart. Additionally, it was so embedded within her body that every time she took a breath, it dug itself deeper. This isn’t even mentioning the bits of shrapnel she had in other places.”
She squares her shoulders, bracing herself for what she’s about to tell her friend.
“At one point during the surgery, she flatlined.”
Ethan gasps and his eyes widen.
“For a very short, and scary, moment, she was gone.”
Harper’s words hit Ethan like a semi-truck and he has to sit back down to try and calm his thundering heartbeat. Harper crouches down in front of him, eyes softening.
“But we were able to bring her back and I strongly believe that the brief lack of oxygen will not have any lasting effects.”
“However, she has been through a lot in the past twelve hours,” she gently places her hand on his shoulder. “She’s still in a coma and we cannot say for certain if she’ll wake back up.”
Ethan tightly shuts his eyes and balls his hands into fists.
“I assure you, Ethan, that we did everything we could. But now, it’s up to her, and her body, to decide if she wants to rejoin us.”
A tear slips down Ethan’s face.
“Can I see her?” His words come out soft, broken.
“No visitors until she makes it through the night. But, you can see her through the window.”
Ethan is unmoving, trying to swallow the lump in his throat.
Harper stands. “Come on,” she tilts her head slightly. “Let’s take a walk.”
Ethan follows suit and they make their way through the waiting room, side by side.
~ 2:00 am ~
Before Ethan knows it, they’re in the ICU, Harper having coyly led him in that direction. She comes to a stop in front of a room.
“This is her. If you need anything at all, you know where to find me.”
Ethan stops her as she begins to turn away, looking at her earnestly.
“Thank you for saving her, Harper. It means…,” he sighs. “Everything.”
“Don’t thank me yet,” she responds, eyes fixed on Serena through the window.
Ethan gives a weak nod.
“She’s a stubborn one. I have a feeling she isn’t done with us yet.”
She turns and walks down the hall a ways, before glancing back. Ethan has one hand on the glass, watching Serena wistfully. She hopes that doing everything she could was enough.

Disclaimers:
*I kept Rafael as an EMT because I wanted to include as much of the crew as possible and having a friend wheel Serena in adds to the angst deliciousness.
**I know Harper is a neurosurgeon, but I wanted to include her badass self and a bit of her platonic friendship with Ethan. So slight Harper AU!

Love and Medicine ~ 1
MASTERLIST
Word Count: 2,300ish
Summary: You begin your intern year at Avengers Medical Center
You let out a little groan as you turned around. You immediately knew you were naked as the cold wood floor sent chills down your bare body. Slowly opening your eyes, you took in your surroundings. You were home, in the house you had just inherited, boxes still pilled high around the living room you were laying in. Suddenly, someone else groaned beside you. You teased, clenching your eyes shut. The headache you had been ignoring since you woke finally broke free and you realized that your late night drunkenness must have caused you to bring a guy home.
You let out a long breath as you reopened your eyes and looked over at the hopefully-still-asleep man beside you. He wasn’t bad looking at all. You had really done well. He was blonde with a chiseled body. He had to have been at least six foot, which didn’t hurt. He was naked though, all out in the open on your living room floor. Cringing, you sat up, pulling one blanket from the couch to quickly cover yourself before standing and pulling one over him. You stood up silently, and began making your way out of the room. It was your first day of your intern year as a doctor, you couldn’t afford to be late.
You successfully made it to the doorway of the living room without a sound before the floorboard beneath you creaked. You should there, frozen, closing your eyes in hopes that the man sleeping behind you wouldn’t wake. You could hear him turn over, letting a small moan out of his mouth. Waiting a few more seconds, you started going again.
“You know…” the man started, clearly in his morning voice, “it’s usually rude to disappear on someone after spending a night with them.”
You quickly spun around to see him, still laying on his stomach, looking up at you with a sly grin.
“Well,” you cleared your throat, “it’s my house, so it’s not that rude.”
He stood up, not grabbing the blanket as quick as he should have, letting you have another look at him. When you met his eyes again, it was clear that you had been caught staring and that he was enjoying it.
“Why the rush to silently get out of here?” He asked, tucking the blanket around his waist. “Have a husband or a boyfriend you have to hurry and get ready for?”
“Neither,” you responded, tightening your hold on the blanket covering you. “I’m running late for my first day of work. So, if we’re done here, you should go.”
“We don’t have to be done here.”
“I think we do.” You kicked up his shirt, grabbing it, and throwing him at it. “You need to go.” He caught his shirt, slipping it on slowly over his clear cut abs. “So, um, goodbye… um…”
“Steve,” he reached his hand out.
“Steve. Right,” you shook his hand. “Y/N.”
“Y/N.” He smiled. It almost took your breath away, but you couldn’t let it show.
“Yeah.”
“Nice meeting you.”
“Yeah. Bye, Steve.”
You fled up the stairs, hoping that by the time you were done getting ready, Steve would be gone.
~~~
You made it to the Avengers Medical Center just in time to meet up with the other interns in your year. The Chief of Surgery, Dr. Nicholas J. Fury, was leading a small tour to the ORs. He started talking as the interns took in the OR.
“Each of you comes here hopeful. Wanting in on the game. A month ago you were in med school being taught by doctors. Today, you are the doctors,” Fury stated. “The seven years you spend here as a surgical resident will be the best and worst of your life. You will be pushed to the breaking point. Look around you. Say hello to your competition. Eight of you will switch to an easier specialty. Five of you will crack under the pressure. Two of you will be asked to leave. This is your starting line. This is your arena. How well you play? That's up to you.”
He then told each of the interns which resident they were assigned to. You got Dr. Gamora. All of the interns were then taken to the locker room, where each of you were assigned a locker and given scrubs to change into and start your long day.
“Only ten women out of thirty,” you muttered as you slipped your scrubs on.
“Yeah,” the woman with fiery red hair next to you responded. “I heard that one of them was a model. Seriously, like that’s going to help with the respect thing?”
“You’re Natasha, right?”
She nodded. “You’re Y/N?”
“Mhm,” you hummed.
“Which resident did you get assigned to? I got Gamora.”
“Me too.”
“You got Gamora?” A male intern repeated beside you. “So did I. At least we’ll all be tortured together, right? I’m Clint Barton, uh, we met at the mixer. You had a dress with a slit up the side, those shiny heels…” You and Natasha exchanged looks. “Now you think I’m gay.”
“Uh-huh,” Natasha hummed, heading out the door.
“No, I’m not gay! It’s, ah, it’s just that, you know, you were, I mean… You were very unforgettable,” Clint rambled as you both followed after Natasha. You shot him a sympathetic smile before hurrying to catch up with Natasha. “And I’m totally forgettable.”
“Barton, L/N, Romanoff, Valkyrie, Lang,” a doctor called at the door way.
“Gamora?” Natasha questioned that doctor that called you.
“End of the hall.”
The five of you that were called began walking. At the end of the hall, you saw a pretty woman working on paperwork. She didn’t look as threatening as you had heard she was.
“That’s Dr. Gamora?” Natasha wondered.
“From what I heard, I thought she’d look scarier,” the other male in your group of five said. You guessed it was Scott Lang.
“Yeah,” Clint agreed. “I thought she’d be… well, bigger.”
“Same,” you added.
“Maybe it’s professional jealousy,” a woman in your group suggested, Valkyrie, you presumed. “Maybe she’s brilliant, and they say things about her because they’re jealous. Maybe she’s really nice.”
“Please don’t tell me you’re the model,” Natasha said.
“Wait…” Clint said, looking at Nat. “I thought you were the model.”
Valkyrie shot Natasha a look before turning to Dr. Gamora with an extended hand. “Hi, I’m Valkyrie, but everyone calls me Val.”
Gamora looked her up and down, not even moving to shake Val’s hand. “I have five rules,” Gamora stated, clearly unimpressed already. “Rule number one, don’t bother sucking up, I already hate all of you, that’s not gonna change.” She turned and pointed to things on the counter. “Trauma protocol, phone lists, pagers. Nurses will page you, you answer every page at a run. A run, that's rule number two. Your first shift starts now and lasts forty-eight hours.”
Gamora began walking away with you and the others quickly following, after each of you have grabbed the things off the counter.
“You’re interns, grunts, nobodies, bottom of the surgical food chain, you run labs, write orders, work every second night till you drop and don’t complain!” She continued. Gamora led you to a door, opening it to reveal a room with bunk beds. “On call rooms. Attendings hog them, sleep when you can, where you can, which brings me to rule number three, if I'm sleeping, don't wake me, unless your patient is actually dying. Rule number four, the dying patient better not be dead when I get there, not only would you have killed someone, you would have also woke me for no good reason, we clear?” There was a brief pause before you nervously raised your hand. “Yes.”
“You said five rules,” you tried to hold back a cringe as you spoke up. “That was only four.”
Suddenly, Gamora’s pager beeped. “Rule number five. When I move, you move.” She ran down the corridor, followed by you and the other interns. “Get out of my way!” She yelled at a few doctor’s blocking the hallway.
You had the others followed Gamora to the ER. There was a bustling trauma room that the six of you entered. There was a young female on the stretcher, already being hooked to the machines.
“What’ve we got?” Gamora asked.
“Savannah Chase, fifteen year old female,” the paramedic still in the room stated. “New onset seizures, intermittent for the past week. ID lost en route. Started gran mal seizing when the ambulance pulled up.”
“Alright, get her on her side, Val, ten milligrams Diazepam.” Val started to do as she was directed while the rest of you watched. “No, no, the white lead is on the right, righty whitey, smoke over fire, a large bore IV. Don’t let the blood haemolyse, let’s go!”
Val injected the young woman with the diazepam and she stopped seizing. A new Doctor entered the room.
“So I heard we got a wet fish on dry land?” The man asked.
“Absolutely Dr. Banner,” Gamora responded.
“Dr. Gamora, I’m gonna shotgun her.”
“That means every test in the book, CT, CBC, chem seven, a tox screen,” Gamora clarified for the interns. “Natasha, you’re on labs, Clint, patient workups, Y/N, get Savannah for a CT, she’s your responsibility now.” Gamora began to walk away.
“Wait,” both Val and Lang called out. Gamora turned back around.
“What about us?” Val asked.
“You two—honey, you get to do rectal exams.”
~~~
You were currently in an elevator with Savannah, the patient, trying to find your way to CT. Since it was your first day at the medical center, you didn’t know where anything was and you were too stubborn to ask.
“You’re lost,” Savannah stated.
“I’m not lost,” you defended. “How are you feeling?”
“How do you think I’m feeling? I’m missing my pageant.”
“You’re missing your pageant.” You wheeled her out of the elevator and around a corner, still not knowing where you were headed.
“The Manhattan Teen Miss? I was in the top ten after the first two rounds. This is my year. I could’ve won.” Savannah sat up as she was wheeled back around the same way. “Hello? You’re so lost. What are you, like, new?”
“I’m— just tell me what happened.”
“I twisted my ankle. I do rhythmic gymnastics, which is like, really cool. Nobody else does it. And I tripped over my ribbon, and I didn't get stuck with someone this clueless. And that was like, a nurse.”
You gritted your teeth, trying not to be over-the-line rude to a patient on your first day. It took you almost another forty five minutes to find CT. You helped her with the scan before taking her back to a room. Before you knew it, it was lunch time. You grabbed some food from the cafeteria, finding your group of interns alone at a table.
“Savannah Chase is a pain in the ass,” you grumbled as you sat down with your tray. “If I hadn't taken the Hippocratic oath, I'd Kevorkian her with my bare hands.” The others around her just stared. “What?”
“Good afternoon interns,” a new doctor came up. “I’m Dr. Maria Hill. It’s posted, but I thought I’d share the good news personally. As you know, the honor of performing the first surgery is reserved for the intern that shows the most promise. As I’m running the OR today, I get to make that choice. I’ve been watching you all and I have to say, you’re all something. The intern I’ve chosen is, Scott Lang.”
Scott coughed up the drink he had been taking. “M-me?” He questioned.
“You’ll scrub in for an appendectomy this afternoon. Congratulations.” Then she left.
“Did she say me?”
“I can’t believe you were chosen over me,” Natasha grumbled. “It’s already clear that I’m a better surgeon that you.”
“Did she say… I’m sorry. What?”
~~~
After lunch, you went back to Savannah’s room to take care of her. As you did, a man and a woman, not doctors, came in.
“Savannah, honey, mom and dad are here,” the woman said, coming over to Savannah’s bedside.
“They gave her a sedative for the CT scan, so she’s a little groggy,” you informed them.
“Will she be alright?” The mother asked.
“Our doctor at home said she might need an operation, is that true?” The father wondered.
“What kind of operation?”
“She’s, um, well, you know what,” you tried your best to sound professional through your nervous stuttering, “I’m not, I’m not the doctor, uh. I am a doctor, but I’m not Savannah’s doctor, so I’ll go get him for you.”
You quickly left the room to go find Gamora. Thankfully, she was at the nurses desk just outside of the room. You hurried over but were too nervous to start speaking.
“What?” Gamora questioned, not looking up from the paperwork she was doing.
“Savannah’s parent’s have questions,” you responded. “Do you talk to them, or do I ask Banner?”
“No, Banner’s off of the case. Savannah belongs to the new attending now, Dr. Rogers, he’s over there.”
You follow in the direction that Gamora gestured to. You only made it a few steps before freezing. The man Gamora gestured to was talking to another doctor. But that wasn’t the reason you froze. Dr. Rogers was none other than your one night stand, Steve. Your eyes widened and you turned to go, but it was too late. Steve glanced your way, having to do a double take. You quickly left, feeling his eyes on the back of you.
“Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit.”
Jungkook watched as the figure turned back around and ran across the other room and into the room on top that he knew gave stairs to the building. He was stuck. Now here bleeding out only to be given to police. This is it.
You stared at the screen in disbelief. There was no way this was how your brother was going to end this chapter. No fuckin way. You looked around in confusion before your eyes fell on the pencil in its holder. You wondered if you should erase it. Then when your brother hopefully comes back, you can tell him that the police accidentally wiped it and then later on convince him to have a different ending. Yeah...That would work. You grabbed the pencil, the thick handle sitting comfortably between your fingers. You hit the eraser icon and as soon as the pencil tip hit the screen, you felt warmth.
Almost like you were sucked into a hot room. A sauna, but without the humidity. It was bright for only a second, and then it was dark. You blinked slowly, your head pulsing. "Ow..what the fuck..." You groaned as you rubbed your temples. Your hands started to lift you from the ground, and you paused as you felt the feeling of concrete and small pieces of rocks. You looked up, the wind blowing your hair as you looked around. You slowly stood up, your eyebrows furrowed and eyes squinting from the lingering headache. You froze.
The city. How? You...You were just in your brother's room. At your parent's house. In the countryside. Did you never leave your studio apartment? But why were you on the roof? Was this whole time of visiting family only a dream? You looked around in disbelief before hearing a faint moan. You whipped your head around and saw someone laying on the ground, a pool of red under them.
"Are-Are you okay?" You asked, quickly running to them. You knelt down next to them, looking at their wounds. I-It's okay! I'm a nurse. I can help you..." You trailed off as soon as you saw his face. Jungkook. "Jungkook-" You slapped your hand over your mouth as soon as you said his name. He looked up at you, his face a twisted mix of pain and confusion. "Do I know you?" He choked out. "N-No. Um...what happened?" You asked. He scoffed. "You're a nurse. You should know..." He trailed off. He was going in and out of consciousness.
"Fuck, um...I'mma call 911." You said, reaching into your pocket and grabbing your phone. You paused when you saw you had no connection. "D-Don't call the police." Jungkook came back from consciousness, his eyes wide. "I need to get an ambulance for you, you're bleeding out." You looked at him up and down, his blood slowly pooling out as he lost more and more blood. "Please...no." He whispered. You looked around, hoping to see someone but there was none. "So do you just want to die out here?" You asked.
You didn't mean to sound mean, but he was being ridiculous at this point. "No...just...you're a nurse, can you take me to your place? I'll like...pay you or whatever to help me just please don't." He was pleaded but it all sounded like a stupid idea to you. Plus, did you even live here?
"You're fucking stupid, no! You've been shot, I have no idea what arteries might've been hit in that leg-" You panicked and Jungkook closed his eyes. He was really about to die out here. With a stupid, useless nurse. Which made it even worse.
"Fine. Whatever. I'll just die." Jungkook said. You gaped at him. "No fuckin way, come on, I'll take you to the hospital myself. Is there an urgent care near?" You asked. "You don't know? You found me." He winced as you grabbed his arm, putting it around your shoulders and slowly helped him up. "I'm um...not from around here." You murmured. Jungkook looked at you, his eyes scanning your face as you chewed at your bottom lip. "How annoying..." He grumbled. You contemplated dropping him back down and letting him bleed out, but then you realized that you'd have this man's life on your mind forever, and you don't want to deal with that trauma.
You two slowly but surely went to the open stairs of the building, making your way down. "Can we use an elevator? You're heavy..." You complained. He was practically dead weight against you, and as strong as you might think you are, a dead weight body is incredible heavy. "No fuckin way. The cops will find me that way." Jungkook was very stubborn, and he was starting to piss you off. "Fine. Then put more work in. You're fat and I can't carry you down all these stairs."
Jungkook rolled his eyes but started to carefully take some of his weight off of you, not wanting to do too much because he was still weak from losing so much blood. Eventually you two make it out the building from the side door, and stumble a couple blocks to a nearby urgent care. You sighed in relief when they took Jungkook into a stretcher and started taking care of his actively bleeding wounds as he was wheeled off. You sat in one of the chairs in the waiting room, your right side stained with his blood.
"Are you his family?" A nurse asked as she stood in front of you. You looked up at her wide eyed "Uh, oh, no. No, I'm just a nurse. I happened to find him and took him here." You combed your hair back, your bangs sticking to your forehead with sweat. "Oh? Where do you work?" Your mouth opened and closed before opening once more, thinking of how to even respond. "Um...is there a bathroom I can wash up in?" You stood, the nurse stepping back with a confused expression before nodding and pointing you in the direction of the bathroom.
You hurried into the large bathroom, locking the door behind you. You sighed, looking yourself in the mirror and gripping the sink hard, your knuckles almost turning white. "What in the ever loving fuck is going on?" You hoped your reflection would reply. Tell you this is all a dream. This is a dream. Yeah, it's a dream.
You washed your face, hands, and legs, already giving up trying to clean the blood from your pajamas when it seemed to just spread and make your skin wet and sticky. "Fuckin hell..." You sighed before leaving the bathroom and sitting back at the waiting area, away from any nurses who may walk past to avoid any further questions.
-
You felt like you were there for hours. You were there for hours. The sound of people crying and alerts over the intercom helped drown out the sound of your own thoughts. Your mind could beat Usain Bolt right now with how hard it was racing. You just sat quietly, cross legged at the ankles. You should leave. You kept telling yourself that, but at the same time you wanted to stay. See if he was okay. Maybe it's because you kinda pretended as if you were waiting for your brother. Hopefully not in these circumstances but to hope he was okay, might bring you some clarity. "Excuse me..." A doctor said as she walked over to you.
You silently hoped there would be no more questions. "Are you with Jeon Jungkook?" She asked. You slowly nodded. "He's fine, in stable condition. Luckily the bullets missed all the important organs and arteries. The bullet in his leg shattered and we had to take those out so please come back if there's any complications after discharge. But luckily the bullet in his abdomen went straight through with no massive damage so that was an easy fix."
She explained everything to you and you sighed in relief. This means you can leave. Finally. "He is ready to see you now." The doctor interrupted your thoughts. "Ex-Excuse me?" You couldn't stop your constant stuttering. "He has requested to see you." You opened your mouth but no words left you, so you simply nodded and followed the doctor through a set or doors towards the patient rooms.
"He's in here. Our visiting hours are over in an hour." She said, nodding to you before walking off. You looked back at her as she left, then turned towards the sliding door of the patient room. Your hand reached out to grab the handle, your fingers wiggling slightly with nervousness. "Annoying Nurse? I know you're there." You could hear Jungkook's deep voice from the other side of the door and you huffed, sliding the door open and going inside quickly. "Annoying nurse? I have a name you know."
"Never told me it, so that's your fault." Jungkook looked at you from his bed, his hospital gown slightly open showing a wrap around his abdomen. You then glanced at the cast on his leg, and the stack of pillows keeping it elevated. "My name is (Y/N), so you can stop calling me annoying. Please." You sighed, taking a seat next to his bed. "Fine. But only because you said please." He smirked. You rolled your eyes. "I just wanted to say thank you. For saving my life." You looked Jungkook in the eye, his eyes on his hands which were picking at his individual fingers.
"No need to thank me. It's my job." You gave him a soft smile. He looked over at you, and matched his smile with yours. "You work here?" You bit your bottom lip. "No...I uh...I work somewhere else. Out of town." You said it so quietly Jungkook almost couldn't hear you. "Oh...okay."
The silence was so uncomfortable you debated just getting up and leaving now, which you thought would be perfect. "Well, visiting hours are probably already over, so I will get going now." You laughed awkwardly, standing up slowly and wiping your sweaty palms agains your pajama shorts. You turned to walk out the door but then a hand reached out and grabbed yours.
You turned back around and saw Jungkook's bandaged hand engulfing your smaller palm. "Can you come back tomorrow?" He almost had puppy dog eyes with the way he looked up at you. "I...I don't know..." You started. "I'll pay for lunch...or dinner. Or whatever you want. Please?" You thought to yourself. "Hmm...fine, but only because you said please." You teased, and Jungkook snorted. He gave you a toothy grin and you felt your cheeks heat up slightly with his hand still wrapped around yours.
"Goodnight Jungkook." You pulled your hand from his grasp and slide open the door to his room. "Goodnight...Y/N" He said as you closed his door. He looked around the hospital room and sighed. "Such an annoying nurse." He chuckled.
-
Now that you were finally out of there, you could properly freak the fuck out. First off, where the fuck are you? Second, why in the fuck is Framed character, Jeon Jungkook, in the same world as you right now? Third, what in the fucking fuck? Fuck? You raked your hands through your messy hair, the reality of everything setting in. What if you're stuck here? What about your family? Your friends? Your job???
You rubbed at your temples. Okay (Y/N), don't stress yourself out too much now. Maybe if you just...go to sleep...you'll wake up back at home. It's a dream remember? You looked around. Where the fuck will you go? You contemplated everything and just realized you should probably just stay at the hospital. You had nowhere to go.
As you made your way back to the entrance doors, three cop cars pulled up and cops started to jump out their cars. You jumped back in surprise. "Are you alright?" One of the officers said, looking at your blood stained clothes. "Y-Yeah I'm fine, I was dropping off a friend." You stammered. The officer looked you up and down curiously. "Well anyways, have you seen this man? He is currently wanted by police." The officer scrolled on his phone before showing you a photo and you almost choked on your spit. A picture of Jungkook was staring right back at you, his purple dyed hair a mess. It's a mugshot.
"Uh...no. Why? What did he do?" You looked at the officer, trying to hold your composure. Why in the hell was there a mugshot of Jungkook? Is that why he wouldn't let you call the police? "We can't say that. Just wondering if you'd seen him." The officer asked once again, as if telling you to just own up to it.
Like hell you were going to do that. You got questions and this little criminal needed to give you answers. "Nope. Never seen him. If you'll please excuse me, my boyfriend was shot and I'm here to make sure he's okay." Your mouth was moving faster than your brain. Boyfriend? Why in the fuck did you say that? The officer's right eyebrow raised curiously. "Did you shoot him?" You cocked your head in confusion before remembering your current attire.
"N-No! I saved his life. Now...please excuse me." You pushed past the officer as you made your way back into the hospital and into the elevators to go to the patient rooms. Once you arrived on the correct floor you snuck past the nurses station, knowing if they saw you they'd tell you to go home since visiting hours were over. Once you got to Jungkook's room, you quietly slide open the door and closed it once you were inside.
"You're back?" Jungkook's voice could've startled you if you weren't already freaking the fuck out. "Jungkook...I just got stopped by the cops." You looked over at him and you visibly saw his adam's apple bob from the gulp he swallowed. "Yeah? And?" This fucker is playing dumb. "And? Jungkook you're wanted by the police! What did you do?" You exclaimed. "Okay, say it louder for the security down the hall." He rolled his eyes, his arms folded across his chest as he huffed, annoyed.
"I didn't do anything." Your eyes could've popped out your head with how hard your eyes were bulging at him. "The police seem to think differently. They showed me your fuckin mugshot, dude." You sat next to his bed, your hands raking your hair with frustration. "That was from something unrelated. This time...it wasn't me." He looked like he really wanted you to believe him. "What happened?" You just wanted to know. You weren't sure if you were sitting with an innocent man or some kind of killer but it would help to make sure?
Jungkook paused, his eyes dashing around as if he was thinking if he should even tell me or not. "Fine...don't tell me." You were starting to get annoyed. You were hoping he would trust you, with you saving his life and all, but that didn't seem to be the case. "(Y/N)..." He started but you were quick to shut him down. "Forget it. Good luck with your case." You slide open the door, your face turned pale when you saw a nurse walking with a police officer.
You slide the door shut once more, and Jungkook looked at you curiously. "Jungkook...the police are here." You whispered. You felt the room go cold and Jungkook looked around nervously. "We gotta go." He started moving, ripping his IV out his arm swinging his leg over the bed with a groan. "Wait what? What the fuck? N-No!" You walked over to him, trying to push him back by his chest. He pushed your hands away.
"I'm not about to be taken for something I did not do." He was angry. Frustrated. You hesistated, watching as he stood and grabbed his bag of clothes. "I'll...I'll help you." Jungkook turned towards you. "You will? Even though you don't know if I'm some crazed killer or not?" You pursed your lips. "Is that what they're trying to arrest you for?" Jungkook took a deep breath in, not saying anything else as he limped towards his things that were put into a hospital bag and then slipped on his hospital slippers.
He turned towards you again, looking you over once more as you stood there. "Are you just gonna stare at me or are you gonna come with me?" You nodded, going over to him and letting him wrap his arm around your shoulder once more. You slid open the door, looking in the direction of where the nurse and officer were and not seeing them. "They might be talking about you, we gotta go." You whispered and Jungkook nodded, following you towards the nearby stairs.
"Wait, can we use the elevator?" Jungkook looked at you as if you were the dumbest on earth. "You truly are the most annoying person I've ever met." He let go of your shoulder. "You go on the elevator, distract the nurse and cop, and meet me on the side of the building. I'll call someone to pick us up since you apparently don't live around here." He rolled his eyes and opened up the door to the stairs, wincing slightly in pain.
You nodded, ignoring his earlier remark and started for the elevator. Right as you were close, the nurse and cop you saw earlier spotted you. "Excuse me? Visiting hours ended a while ago." She said. You looked at her apologetically. "Sorry...my boyfriend was shot and I just needed to see him one more time. Bring him some snacks and stuff." You continued heading for the elevator, ignoring the calls from the nurse and officer as you pressed the first floor button and mashed the 'closed elevator' button repetitively.
Once you got to the first floor, you walked calmly out the door, ignoring the looks from the earlier officer that questioned you earlier. As soon as you touched the outside, a large exhale escaped your lungs. How long were you holding your breath? As you walked, you heard a low voice call out to you. "(Y/N)." Jungkook called for you in a silent yell. You hurried over to him, grabbing his arm once again to help him balance himself.
"Where is your friend?" You looked up at him. "Behind here." He started walking and you tried your best to help him along the way, the weight of his body was a little easier to handle now. He wasn't extremely heavy, but the amount of muscle on him did add to his weight and made it a little hard to keep hold of him.
As you kept walking you noticed a car parked with its lights off. You opened the door and Jungkook slowly sat into the back seat, wincing and groaned the whole time. You tried to look at the driver but couldn't. What if this is just his plan to kidnap you? You know what he's on the run for, getting rid of you will just make things easier.
"Come on." Jungkook grabbed your arm, pulling you into the car with him. You sat, a little reluctant but deciding it's for the best. You could have somewhere to sleep, if Jungkook doesn't kill you first. Once you were inside, you could now see who was driving. Kim Seokjin. Jungkook's other best friend in this story.
"Jesus Christ dude, who did that to you?" He looked back at Jungkook, his eyes then shifting to you. "Is this a new one?" That question almost seemed like an insult. New one? You don't remember Jungkook being a player in the story? How many relationships has he been in?
"Shut up and drive, dude. I'm sure the cops just realized I'm gone." Jungkook looked around, almost paranoid. "Okay fine." Seokjin started driving, waiting till he was on the road before turning his headlights on. He then turned on the radio, pop punk softly playing. Jungkook was exhausted. Terribly exhausted, and he couldn't help but rest his head on your shoulder. You stiffened at first, but then understood immediately and relaxed.
You smell good. He thought to himself as he took a slow deep breath, taking in your scent. Even though you smelled slightly of his blood, there was this other natural scent from you. Your hair smelled clean. Like you just washed it before finding him bleeding out on the roof. He appreciated this. It helps him relax.
The drive was long, but it helped ease the worry between Jungkook's brow, and he was relieved when you all arrived at Seokjin's brother's house. "My brother is away on a business trip for a month, so this place is yours until you figure things out." Seokjin explained everything to you two as he helped Jungkook get out the car. Jungkook gritted his teeth in pain. He looked over to you, seeing your tired expression. "Is it okay if we use his clothes?"
"Yeah dude, no problem. Just make sure you wash everything before you leave." Seokjin opened the door for you, letting you in first before helping Jungkook. "There's two bedrooms, so there's another place to sleep." You glanced around the place. This was a very nice house. One you didn't mind staying in for as long as Jungkook wanted.
What was that? You were thinking as if you were gonna be here another night. This is just a very long, draining dream. After tonight, you will wake up in your bed or on the floor of your brother's room and wonder what happened. "Thank you, Hyung." Jungkook watched you as you walked around. "Oh, so now we're using formalities?" Seokjin joked, walking Jungkook into one of the rooms and setting him on the bed.
"Alright, I'll leave you two be. Reminder, this is only for a month, so don't get too comfortable. And also, please clean up after yourself. Also please throw all your condoms away in the outside trash or flush them, if ya'll use those. I don't want my brother asking too many questions." Seokjin looked at the both of you and you looked back at him wide eyed, your face as hot as an oven.
"Hyung. Stop. We're just friends." Jungkook looked almost as flustered as you, his eyes quickly averting yours. "Really? Just friends with someone this hot? Then you don't mind if I flirt with them right?" Seokjin flashed you a wide grin and you bit your lip nervously. Seokjin is a very...very handsome man yet you couldn't imagine doing anything with him. Jungkook glanced between the two of you and something rose within him. Jealousy? No fuckin way. Either way it pissed him off seeing his friend look at you like that.
"Jin..." Seokjin chuckled, shaking his head. "And the formalities are gone again." He headed out the room and down the hall. "Alright kids, I'll leave you two alone." You both waited in silence, waiting for the sound of the front door to close and lock before both exhaling.
"Holy shit...um...well. This is nice I guess." You were trying to find anything to get your mind off whatever just happened and you could see Jungkook either was trying to do the same or honestly didn't care because he just slowly laid down onto the bed. "I'm going to sleep. It's been a long night." He grumbled and you nodded, the awkward silence engulfing the room once again. "Gotcha...I'll just...go into the other room." You headed towards the door before hearing the bed creak slightly.
"Goodnight." Jungkook stared at you as you walked out the door and slowly closed it behind you. "Night, Jungkook." You said before shutting it. Once you were out the room, you felt all the stiffness and uneasiness leave you. Holy fuck, you need a shower. You smelled of blood and sweat and it was utterly disgusting. You went straight into the bathroom and started the shower, shedding your clothes off and hopping in as soon as the water was scolding hot. You let the water drop onto your naked body, the water slowly washing the dried blood off of you and trailing into the drain. You grabbed the soap on the side and started scrubbing, almost as if you were trying to scrub five layers of skin off.
After your shower and you felt like you were fresh and raw from the hot water and hard scrubbing, you wrapped yourself in a fluffy towel and made your way into the other bedroom. Once you were inside you opened a dresser and saw a couple large shirts. You were thankful they were huge cause you didn't have any spare underwear to wear.
You pulled it over your head, the soft material falling over your body and resting at your mid thigh. You put the towel to your hair and dried your hair as much as possible, your arms felt so tired that just lifting them to dry your hair was a lot of work. You put the towel on the ground and made your way over to the bed and went under the sheets. This was what you finally needed. A comfortable bed. And now, as you fall asleep, you can look forward to waking up back home.
Falling, fallen chapter 1
Pairings: Spencer Reid x OFC
Story summary: Spencer randomly meets Leah at the library and their first encounter was supposed to be just that; a random one-time occurance. When an unsub lands Spencer in the very same hospital she works at, she feels obligated to take care of him. But what happens when his team notices her everlooming presence and theorises that perhaps she could be the unsub they’re looking for?
Chapter summary: The guy Leah had met at the library just an hour ago suddenly gets wheeled into the ER where she works.
Warnings: Mention of blood, but not a lot.
Wordcount: 6,6 k
Prologue, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6, Chapter 7,
Leah hadn’t even been on call for half an hour when a stretcher was rolled in through the doors of the ER, someone shouting “Male, early thirties! Gunshotwound to the lower abdomen.” That was about all she was able to concentrate on. The ER was a mess of chaos, every available doctor and nurse running between patients. People were running into each other, medicalequipments crashing onto the floor every now and then, some patients screaming out in pain… Leah could feel the beginning of a migraine sneaking up on her. She almost never worked in the ER, usually sticking to Post Op. or the ICU, but there had been a masscollision on the highway that night so it was kind of like an all hands on deck situation.
Leah was currently working on picking out broken glass from the arm of an elderly woman. It wasn’t a terrible wound, but judging by the way it was bleeding she’d probably need stitches. Still, Leah had no idea why she was there. Her injuries weren’t lifethreatning and the ER was overcrowded with other patients who actually needed their attention more than this woman. She’d be just fine if she had gone to an urgent care, but Leah wasn’t about to argue.
“Leah, I’m gonna need you with me in traumaroom 2.” Dr. Ruiz called over the noise and it gathered her attention. She caught his glance across the room and saw that he was following the stretcher which had just been brought in by the ambulance. Leah quickly mumbled her apologies to the woman, pulled off her gloves and started to navigate through the sea of chaos. She eventually pushed the doors of traumaroom 2 open, rubbing her hands dry from the sanitizer she’d covered them with.
“What’s his status?” Leah asked once she entered, quickly making her way over to the man laying across the stretcher. She knew why Dr. Ruiz had called her in here. The patient was a gunshotvictim, which usually meant a lot of blood. Typically, in cases like this, there were two doctors to check the injuries and make medicaldecisions. Gunshotwounds were always messy and it was hard to know what to expect, so two doctors in the room was always ideal, just in case the patient were to crash or there was a lifethreatning injury. But currently all doctors seemed to be otherwise occupied, so Leah understood why Dr. Ruiz had called her in. Blood and gore never bothered her, it actually made her calmer. The more pressure she had on her shoulders, the calmer and more collected she stayed. She was on the traumateam for a reason, although be it as a nurse, so she had seen a thing or two in her past.
“Oh my God, Spencer!” She exclaimed, surprised to discover the identity of the man sprawled out in front of her. She stood there frozen in place for a moment, wondering what had happened. She had left him at the library not even an hour previously and now he was here, blood pooling slowly from the open wound in his abdomen.
The surprise only shocked her for a split second before she shook herself out of her thoughts. Stroking a hand over his forehead, she matted his mop of curls out his face. Using a thumb to force one of his eyelids open, she grabbed a small flashlight from the pocket of her scrubs.
“Spencer, can you hear me?” She asked him, shining the light into his eyes a few times, watching for any sort of unusual reaction of his pupils. She did the same with the other eye. “Spencer?” She asked once more. He was out cold, but his pupils responded as expected so that made her a little more at ease.
“You know him?” Dr. Ruiz asked over his shoulder, roaming through the cabinets to find all the equipments he’d need to fully check the injuries.
“Well, kinda,” Leah answered, not knowing what else to say in that moment. There was no use to lie about the fact that she’d met him an hour earlier, but she didn’t exactly know him.
“Are you gonna be okay with this or do you need to step out?” Dr. Ruiz asked her, finally returning to stand at Spencer’s other side.
“I’m good,” Leah told him, probably a little too fast to sound convincing. But it was true, she was nothing if not professional.
“Okay,” Dr. Ruiz nodded. “Ready to move him?” He asked and it was Leah’s turn to nod. She pushed the stretcher closer to the bed in the room as Dr. Ruiz got out of the way. Locking the breaks of the stretcher so it wouldn’t budge, she grabbed a tight hold of the sheet underneath Spencer as the doctor did the same on the other side. They locked eyes and counted. One, two, three. In a split second they had Spencer lifted onto the bed with such ease it looked like they had done it a hundred times before. Which they actually probably had. Dr. Ruiz was one of the doctors Leah worked closest with, since he was typically stationed at Post Op. When they were both on call, Leah was nomally the person Dr. Ruiz would call for if he needed help. They were kind of a dream team; a force to be reckoned with whenever they worked together.
As the doctor started to cut Spencer’s shirt open, Leah wheeled the stretcher out into the hall to give them space. Locking the door behind her again, she quickly took a look at his medicalfile which another nurse had just delivered in her hand.
“This is gonna hurt. Let’s push for 10mg Oxycodone,” Dr. Ruiz told her once she returned to Spencer’s side.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea. Cave morphine,” Leah told him as she started slicing Spencer’s shirt open from his sleeve up to his shoulder.
“Addiction or allergy?” The dortor asked.
“Addiction. Dilaudid,” Leah informed him, having just read it in his file. She had already snapped gloves onto her hands and was working on getting the IV-kit ready. “Tramadol would be a safer option, right?” Tramadol was usually the kind of drugs they’d give to patients after minor surgeries or injuries to manage the pain. It was hardly as effective as Oxy-preparations, but it was usually still enough to take the edge off. They hardly ever used it before they were able to assess the pain level of the patients, but it still seemed to be the least addictive morphinecontaining drug they had at hand. And given Spencer’s injuries some sort of morphine was needed despite what his medicalfile said. He needed something for the pain and NSAIDs weren’t going to cut it in that moment. They could handle whatever addiction-problem he had later; when he wasn’t in a potential life-threatening situation.
Dr. Ruiz nodded his head acutely, ordering her to administer 50mg. Leah worked quickly, finding a usable vein in Spencer’s hand and poking the cannula into it. Taping it down onto his hand, she hooked a bag of ring acetate to the pole by the bed and connected the tube to the IV. She noticed Spencer twitching a little at that and she moved to stand over his head.
“Spencer, are you awake?” She asked, once again matting his hair back. She noted, even through the gloves she was wearing, that he was warm and sweaty. “I’m gonna give you something for the pain, okay? It’s Tramadol, so I hope that’s okay,” she informed him, even though she highly doubted that he was coherent enough to register her words. She did as she’d said she’d do, pushing a needle Dr. Ruiz had readied for her into the IV-tube and slowly administered the drug. While the painkillers worked its way through his system, she leaned over to help Dr. Ruiz. She put pressure on the wound on his abdomen while the doctor probed around with an ultrasound, trying to look for anything that could indicate whether Spencer had an internal bleeding.
It didn’t even take a minute before Spencer calmed down, his twitching stopping completely and his breathing evening out. She was glad for that, not wanting him to be more uncomfortable than necessary.
“You paged me?” A woman's voice startled Leah and she turned to the door which was now wide open. She was another doctor, but Leah couldn’t really recall her name. Not that she really cared either.
“Yes!” Dr. Ruiz said, tightening the bandage they had just wrapped around Spencer’s wound. It was still bleeding, but the wrappings should be able to hold for the transport to the OR. “GSW to the lower abdomen. Patient is non responding, but stable. No sign of internal bleeding, but I’m sure he needs surgery to remove that bullet,” Dr. Ruiz informed the other woman who nodded along. She moved further into the room and cast a quick look at Spencer, checking the vitals, pupil responses, making sure the oxygenprosentage of his mask was correct before she once again nodded.
“I agree. He’s stable enough to be moved? Then we should wheel him down to Pre Op.,” she concluded.
“I’ll go with him,” Leah found herself speaking before she could even register those thoughts.
“No, no, no, Leah,” Dr. Ruiz said, laying a clean hand on her shoulder. “I need you here in the ER. I’ll go with him and I’ll keep you updated. Don’t worry, he’s going to be fine.” His words reassured her a little. It’s not like Spencer was a friend or anything, but she knew him enough to put a name to the face and that brought this whole case a little closer to home. But she let him go, knowing she was needed more in the ER.
She kept her hands busy for the next two hours before Dr. Ruiz finally returned, hovering just behind her as she was working on trying to determine if she should send the teenager in front of her up to radiology or not.
“He’s in surgery now,” Dr. Ruiz informed her, not giving a care to the boy Leah was inspecting. He cried out in pain when she moved his foot at an odd angle.
“I think he needs to take a trip over to radiology. Do you mind signing the papers?” Leah asked the doctor, not wanting to talk about Spencer right now, especially not in front of another patient. She let Dr. Ruiz take over the patient, but she hovered around until they had sent the boy on his way. She cleaned up after herself and took a glance around the ER. It was getting quiet now. The rush of patients had died down now and she spotted several doctors and nurses just hanging around, chatting and taking a well deserved minibreak.
“Come on,” Dr. Ruiz said, putting a gentle hand on Leah’s shoulder. “Let’s grab a quick coffee and then you can head up to the ICU.” Leah had never felt more relieved by the idea of a cup of the shitty coffee the hospital had to offer. She really needed coffee now.
Leah had always liked Dr. Ruiz. She considered him a friend, at least a workfriend. It’s not just that they worked well together, but he was always very considerate; always being there if she needed a shoulder to cry on at the end of a hard day, pushing her to take a break because she always refused to, bringing her powerbars if there was a busy day and they didn’t have time for a real meal. He was nice and she liked how she could always lean on him.
“I don’t actually know him,” Leah finally spoke up once they had both filled up their cups with the cheap stuff the vendingmachines wanted to pass as coffee. Dr. Ruiz didn’t say anything, just gave a gesture of his hand for her to continue. He leaned back against the wall of the corridor and Leah mirrored him. “We just met earlier today, actually. I forgot my librarycard at the library and he found it, handed it back. We just had a small conversation, nothing big. But then I got called in for the accident, so I had to leave. I mean, I’d seen him just an hour ago and then they wheeled him in,” she explained, not really knowing what to feel.
“And what? You blame yourself or something?” He asked, clearly reading her mind.
“No, not really,” she told him, which was an obvious lie. “I guess it just shocked me. I don’t know. I mean, maybe it could have been me. I don’t even know what happened to him, but I keep thinking that it could have been me. Or maybe if I had stayed a little longer then this wouldn’t have happened at all.” She hadn’t heard anything about what had actually happened. Maybe it had been a robbery gone wrong, or maybe there had been a shootout and he was in the middle of the crossfire. She didn’t suspect the last one since they hadn’t received any other gunshotwound-patients, but the possibilities were still endless. All she knew was that he was brought in with a bullet in his abdomen and that he would hopefully pull through.
“You know, you should really stop thinking like that. It’s not healthy,” Dr. Ruiz told her and it was exactly what she needed to hear. No bullshit excuse about how it wasn’t her fault or that there wouldn’t have been anything she could’ve done. Just a plain and simple command to stop overthinking. It made a small smile play on her lips.
“Yeah, well… How can I not?” She asked him, glancing up. He gave her a sad smile, knowing it was hard to let those thoughts go. He wrapped an arm around her shoulder and pulled her into his body. Leah sighed, leaning her head back into his shoulder while taking a sip of her coffee. He didn’t say anything else and neither did she. They just stayed there in silence for another few moments before he started leading her down the corridor. They said their goodbyes in front of the ICU, Dr. Ruiz promised he’d keep her updated on Spencer’s surgery.
Leah prepared for a long night. Nightshifts were usually crap because it was so quiet and she was the kind of person who needed things to do. If she didn’t, she usually got all fidgety and restless, which was also why she never liked reading. She couldn’t sit still for longer periods of time. The more things she had to do, the better she felt once she got home at the end of the day. She had also prepared for a doubleshift, knowing the morning would be busy with doctorvisits, family coming to see their loved ones, breakfast coming around and helping certain patients go to the bathroom and get cleaned up. Yeah, she looked forward to the morning, but for right now she dreaded the long night ahead.
Dr. Ruiz came up a little after two in the morning to let her know that Spencer was out of surgery and was recovering nicely. He’d been lucky, the bullet not hitting any major organs, but it had nicked his bladder so they were afraid of how his bladdercontrol would be. They wanted to keep him catheterized for a few days just to make sure everything was working properly. Apparently, he was also risking the development of internal bleeding and infections. Leah knew that, there was always a risk of that when it came to injuries like Spencer’s, but it rarely ever happened, not unless the bullet had nicked something or the surgery went wrong. But there was still a chance, so they always informed each other of it. She still knew that chances were slim so she wasn’t overly concerned about it. She was mostly happy he was going to be fine.
Spencer was rolled into his own room at the ICU around 3:30 A.M. and Leah made it her personal business to check up on him. She finished the rest of her round rather quickly after that. Once she finished up the most important tasks she grabbed a fresh cup of coffee and some food from the cafeteria. For the next hour she hid out in Spencer’s room, figuring she’d deserved a nice, long break since she was going to pull a doubleshift. It was a quiet night anyway so she didn’t even feel remotely bad about it.
He woke up a little before six in the morning, groaning softly from the bed beside her. Leah glanced over at him, giving him a moment to orient himself. She knew that her position was highly unprofessional; sitting a chair beside him with her feet propped up on his bed next to his. But she didn’t care. Her feet were aching and she loved being able to relieve the pressure for a little while. So, she played it cool, deciding it would be worse to drop her legs down in embarrassment.
“Well, hey there, Stranger!” Leah decided to greet him with the biggest smile she could master. Spencer seemed to be more alert now and he had glanced everywhere imaginable; the door, her feet, the heartmonotor, the IV-bag, the ceiling. Still, his eyes wavered between her feet and her face.
“You’re wearing mismatched socks,” he finally said. Leah couldn’t help but chuckle at that. That was probably the strangest thing anyone had ever said to her after coming out of surgery.
“You know, we ruled out braintrauma pretty early on, but maybe we should still call neuro?” She teased. She could see a blush creep up his cheeks, taininting them in under half a second. His eyes roamed around again, finally locking in on the clock hanging above the door.
“No, that won’t be necessary,” he told her bluntly and Leah felt like he probably wasn’t in jokingmood. “Where are my things? I need to call my boss,” he said trying to move up into a sitting position. Leah decided to just watch him struggle for a moment, finding it highly amusing even though she was still a little worried about him. He was probably still woozy from the anesthesia so sitting up appeared to be a struggle. Finally, Leah dropped her feet from his bed when he groaned out in pain. She walked over to him, putting both her hands on his shoulder and pushing him firmly back.
“Don’t pull your stitches,” she told him. She took a seat in the chair again, grabbing the remote to bed and began to raise his back. He groaned out again when he was almost sitting, so she lowered the back a few notches again. “Don’t be a baby now,” she teased, but her voice was probably a little harsh. She couldn’t help it. She’d had a long day and she had been really worried about him.
“I’m not a baby,” he whispered and Leah could see a pout on his lips. It only made her smirk.
“You sure about that?” She asked, leaning over to snatch his file from the holder at the end of the bed. “You know what they say, right? About doctors being the worst patients?” She raised an eyebrow at him to give him the indication that she knew he was a doctor. It was in his file after all.
“I’m not that kind of doctor,” he informed her and Leah just chuckled.
“Yeah, I figured that much out. I’ve been around enough real doctors, so trust me when I say you’re definitely not the type,” she laughed. “No offense, of course,” she decided to add as an afterthought.
“None taken,” he replied, a little slurred. Leah looked over at him. “Can I call my boss now?” He asked and Leah sighed.
“Spencer, look… they’re already here, your friends I mean-” He cut her off before she even had the chance to say anything else.
“They’re not my friends. They’re my team.” His words surprised her. She hadn’t gotten the chance to talk to them yet, but she’d heard that they had all been really worried and constantly asked for updates on his condition. They seemed genuinely worried about his wellbeing.
“And they can’t be your friends because they’re ‘your team’?” She asked, cocking an eyebrow at him.
“Are you friends with your coworkers?” Spencer asked back, and it should’ve been a witty comeback, but he actually sounded interested in knowing.
“Can’t say that I am,” she said after pondering the thought for a second or so. “Touché, by the way. But my point is, just take a minute to wake up a little bit. I’ll go get them later so you can see them, okay? Just please… take a breather, alright? And I want the doctor to take a look at you first as well. Do you even remember what happened? You just woke up from surgery after getting shot. Let that sink in before I call them in.”
“I’m fine,” Spencer insisted, but Leah just shot him a stern look. She stared him down for what felt like too long before he finally caved, leaning a little further back in his seat with a sigh.
“Good,” Leah smiled. She took a moment to really study him for the first time. He was actually really handsome, with these greenish eyes which got more honeybrown towards the middle and shaggy brown hair which she suspected was always unkept. His nose was straight and his lips slightly plump, skin clean. He actually looked like a specimen. The only negative thing she could point out were the dark circles under his eyes and she felt her heartstring tug a little, wondering what nightmares kept him up at night. The nasal cannula going into his nostrils made him look even sicker than he probably was, but it was still a sight for poor eyes.
“So, you’re… a nurse?” He asked after a few more moments of silence. Leah couldn’t help the bashful smile that stretched across her lips.
“Well, isn’t that kind of obvious?” She laughed, adoring how cute he was when he got all awkward. She took a sip of her coffee and decided it was time to call for the doctor, so she reached over Spencer's head to press the green button on the wall. Spencer was giving her a strange look and she had no idea what that meant. “What?” She asked him, cocking an eyebrow. His intense stare was kind of making her uneasy, but there was no way she was going to show him that.
“I just didn’t take you for the nursing-type,” he mumbled. “No offense,” he quickly added, just as she had done previously. But he looked almost terrified about it, as if he was actually afraid he’d insulted her. Leah could only laugh.
“Don’t worry about it,” she assured him. “I wouldn’t exactly picture myself as the type either, but here we are. I’m damn good at my job, though.” As if on cue the door to the room opened and Sophie, a young girl who happened to be Leah’s intern, stepped through the door. She decided to have a little fun with that. “Ah! Dr. Reid, meet my intern. Sophie, this is Dr. Reid. You’re in charge of him when I’m not here. Got it?” Spencer gave her an uncertain glance and Sophie had a look of pure horror on her face. She locked eyes with Leah, the ‘Oh dear God, he’s a doctor’ kind of look written over her face. Sophie was a sweet girl, but kind of slouch, and Leah had a tendency to play small little tricks to get her to work just a little harder. Knowing that the patient was a doctor (she didn’t need to know he wasn’t a medical doctor) would definitely nudge her to go the extra mile.
“You, um, you called?” Sophie asked a little uncertainly and Leah found herself pleased when she noted the not so subtle way she leaned over to take a pump of the handsanatizer hanging on the wall by the door. It had been one of the many things Leah had added to her list of improving areas; always sanitize your hands before entering and leaving a patient’s room.
“Yeah,” Leah tried to hide her grin. “Who’s on call right now?” She asked, knowing she could just as well walk out the door and find out herself, but she loved torturing her interns just a little bit. She never crossed the line, but she always pushed them around just enough that they’d remember who was in charge. She loved it, a little innocent fun.
“Uhm, well… There’s you, obviously… and, uh, me and-” Sophie started and Leah resisted the urge to roll her eyes.
“Sophie, calm down. It’s fine. I mean doctors, who’s on call?” Leah smiled up at Sophie, trying to reassure her that she’d only been joking. Well, at least half-joking. That was another one of Sophie’s flaws; she was too uncertain of herself and could hardly handle a joke.
“Oh, um. I’m not sure,” Sophie mumbled, but didn’t make any move to find out. Leah just stared at her until she lifted her eyes to glance back.
“So?” Leah asked and Sophie looked even more confused at that. “Are you gonna find out for me?” That seemed to startle her because she almost jumped.
“Oh, right! Yes, I’ll be right back.” She was out the door so fast Leah couldn’t help but laugh. She shook her head to herself and stood up from the chair, leaning closer to the heartmonitor and noting down Spencer’s vitals on his chart.
“That was mean,” Spencer mumbled. Leah looked at him for a second, pausing her hand which was still writing.
“It’s a bit of innocent fun. I’m their boss and you see that pager behind you,” she pointed her pen at the wall behind his head. She didn’t even wait for him to try to turn around to look at it before she continued. “It makes me their God,” she finished with a smug smile and gave him a wink. Spencer narrowed his eyes at her.
“She’s your intern. You’re supposed to teach her, not scare her half to death.” He sounded almost angry, despite the uncertainty in his voice. Wow, this guy really couldn’t take a joke. Leah sighed.
“Look, it’s a bit of innocent fun. We have a good relationship and we always have a little debriefing at the end of the day. She’d tell me if I was being too harsh on her,” she said. She finished the chart and put it down in the holder by the end of the bed. She crossed her arms over her chest and sighed a little. “You probably think I’m too rough on her or whatever, and sure, I probably am. But here’s the thing, and I probably shouldn’t even tell you this, but she’s insecure. She needs to learn how to stand on her own two feet. She’s probably gonna lash out on me one of these days and I’m gonna be so proud of her the day she does. She’s a snowflake and she really needs to learn how to stand up for herself.” She decided it was best to just be honest with him. In all honesty she shouldn’t care what Spencer thought of her, but she did. She didn’t want him to think that she was some heartless bitch. She loved being a mentor and loved looking out for her interns. Sophie, despite all her flaws, was her favourite. Leah could see her potential, if she just worked past her insecurities she’d be a damn fine nurse one day.
“So, you’re… bullying her to make her, what, stand up for herself?” Spencer asked, surprise lacing his voice, but he didn’t sound angry anymore. That was a good thing, she guessed.
“I’m not bullying her. Just pushing her buttons a little. Call it reversed psychology or whatever. It always works.” Leah grabbed her zipup hoodie which she had draped over the chair and stuck her arms through. She shook the hood in place so it wasn’t one giant ball in the back of her neck. Spencer gave her a small smile and she wondered what he was thinking. She didn’t want to stay long enough to figure out though. “Okay, well… I’ll go see about that doctor. I’ll go get your friends in a while, so hang out and try to, I don’t know, relax I guess? Call if you need anything,” she told him, placing a gentle hand on his arm just because she could. Grabbing her coffeecup under her armpit she took a few pumps of handsanatizer on the way out. She made her way to the nursesation just as Sophie came practically running down the hall.
“Jameson’s on call right now,” She said, almost sounding out of breath. Leah wondered if she had been running all over the Goddamned hospital to figure that out.
“Okay, did you tell him to take a look at 104?” She asked and Sophie’s eyes went wide. Leah realized quickly what that meant. “No, no! Sophie, it’s okay. Seriously. I’ll go find him. Don’t worry about it,” Leah gave her a reassuring smile, reaching out to squeeze both her shoulders. “Did you finish your schedule yet?” She asked, knowing her interns had some kind of schedule, like a plan, they were supposed to follow.
“Uhm, well, I still have to take out the trash in 109 and I have some other small things I haven’t done yet, but-”
“Don’t worry about that,” Leah cut her off with a dismissive wave of her hand. She threw away her now empty papercup and hung her hoodie over the chair by the computer. “I’ll take care of it. Don’t worry. Take a break or something, get some air, whatever.” Sophie seemed a little reluctant to the idea, but nodded her head acutely.
“Would you, uhm, like me to bring you back some more coffee? Black right?” Sophie asked and Leah couldn’t help but grin at her.
“Yes, please. Take your time, though.” With that Sophie took her leave and Leah went to find Dr. Jameson to let him know that Spencer was awake and needed a quick check. She then went back to the nursingstation to check what was next on her to-do list. She finished her round rather quickly, even with Sophie’s small list of things she’d neglected to do, or hadn’t gotten around to do or for whatever other reason just hadn’t done yet. It was just minor things, so she didn’t mind. Sophie seemed to have been doing alright with everything else.
When she once again returned to the nursingstation there was a steaming papercup with her name on it, decorated with a simple smileyface. Leah smiled at that. She sat down by the computer and started documenting the most important details of the nightswatch so the morningshift would know what had gone down. Just as she was about to finish up, Sophie approached her, fidgeting a little.
“Thanks for the coffee, Sophie,” Leah told her, hoping that would ease her nervousness a little.
“Oh, no problem!” Sophie smiled. “Uhm, Jameson took a look at the good doctor in 104 and-” Leah had to cut her off with a chuckle.
“That’s what we’re calling him now?”
“Well… he hasn’t yelled at me yet for screwing up and he’s actually been kind of polite, so… I guess?” She sounded so uncertain again.
“Well, what did you screw up?” Leah wasn’t mad. Everyone made mistakes, even her, and she just needed to know if it was a major blowup she had to document or if it was a small thing that could hardly be called a mistake.
“Oh, nothing I think? I’m just really afraid of messing up,” Sophie told her, rather nonchalantly and Leah felt a little proud of her for not freaking out.
“Okay, good. Look, Sophie… You don’t have to be afraid of messing up. Everyone messes up and I won’t get mad or anything, alright? You know I’m only teasing you, right? I don’t mean anything by it.” Leah always felt good about having these heart to heart talks with Sophie.
“Yeah, I know. It’s just, uhm, I’m kinda awkward, I guess.” Leah laughed at that and Sophie gave a soft chuckle as well. Good thing for her that Spencer seemed twice as awkward as her. Maybe that would help boost her confidence.
“Anyway, sorry I cut you off. What were you gonna say about the good doctor?” Leah really liked that nickname, it seemed to be suiting him.
“Oh, yeah! Uhm, Jameson said that everything seemed to be alright, but wants to keep him here under observation at least until tomorrow just to make sure. And he’s still on antibiotics four times a day and we can amp up his painkillers, but he doesn’t want any morphine.” That last part didn’t surprise her whatsoever. “And he decided to switch off the oxygen for now, but to keep it on standby just in case his saturation decreases.” That wasn’t a surprise either. Most patients receive oxygen after surgery because the anesthesia could make them sluggish and their breathing labored. Once it wears off they’d be taken off oxygen as well.
“Okay, that’s good,” Leah said, nodding along. “Anything else?”
“Oh, yeah. He, uhm, wants to see his coworkers now and I told him he could only see two at a time, because that’s still the rule, right? He wanted to see Hotch and J.J. first. I guess you could get them?” Leah nodded her head and gave Sophie a pat on the back before returning to finish up her reports. It was around 6:45 A.M. when she headed out to the waiting area with her coffeecup in hand, recently refilled after she’d downed the one Sophie had brought her.
“Do I have a Hotch and J.J. for Spencer Reid?” Leah asked, scanning the waitingarea. She somehow knew the people she was looking for before they rose from their seats to come greet her. The whole group of, wow, six people practically came running for her.
“Is he okay?” One of the women, dressed in a very colorful dress and an excessive amount of accessories asked, almost screaming out. She must have been very worried. Leah noted the flowers in her hand and grimaced at the thought of having to tell her later that flowers weren’t allowed in the ICU.
“He’s fine. He’s fully awake now,” Leah tried to reassure her. “He’s given me permission to share the specifics of his condition, so I can do that now, or you can wait for the doctorsvisit later today to get some more details. He’s just been checked out by a doctor now, though, and everything seems to be alright. He’ll probably stay in the ICU until tomorrow at least before we consider moving him.” She gave them the rest of what she knew and they seemed pleased that he was doing okay. So was Leah. Bulletwounds to the abdomen were typically gnarly cases, but Spencer had been really lucky.
“Can we see him now?” The darkhaired woman asked, sounding just as worried as the other one had been just a minute ago.
“Sure, but he’s in the ICU and we only allow two visitors at a time. We’ve asked and he wanted to see Hotch and J.J. first,” Leah told them, still having no idea who the respective ones were.
“What, so I don’t get to see him?” The dark skinned man asked. He sounded angry, annoyed and frustrated, but Leah didn’t find him intimidating whatsoever, even despite the fact that he towered over her.
“As I said, only two at a time. But he can have visitors all day for all I care, so you can take turns to see him, I don’t care how you do it. But only two at a time.” She tried to sound stern, but she also had sympathy for them. They’d been worried sick all night and they probably wanted to storm his room and hug him.
“Come on! That’s a bunch of bullshit!” The man yelled, obviously getting a little agitated. Leah wanted to step forward forward, put a hand on his shoulder to calm him down or something, but before she got the chance the tall man in the suit, yes a Goddamned suit, stepped forward.
“Morgan,” He raised his hand in a stopmotion which immediately calmed the man down. “We’ll be quick. You’ll get to see him.” That seemed to do the trick because he sighed in defeat and stepped back.
“Alright then, follow me!” Leah said and turned on her heel, wanting to get out of there as soon as possible. She had other things to do, not really, but she could at least pretend she did. Standing in the waitingroom and arguing with friends and family of patients was not something she wanted to spend her whole day doing.
“Wait, Sir. Can you bring him these for me?” Leah noticed that it was Flowerwoman who had spoken.
“Actually, Ma’am… flowers are not allowed in the ICU either. I’m really sorry. If we move him to another unit tomorrow, you can bring him whatever you want, but as of right now I’m gonna have to say no,” she said, turning her body to give the woman an apologetic look.
“Oh.” She sounded utterly wrecked as she uttered the simple word and it made Leah a little sad. These people cared so deeply for Spencer. How could he possibly claim they weren’t his friends?
She brought J.J,, a young woman a little taller than herself, and Hotch, the man who had calmed down the black man earlier, through the doors of the ICU. She quickly located Spencer’s room and knocked on the door a few times before entering. He seemed pleasantly surprised to see his colleagues following right behind her.
“Oh, Spence!” J.J. exclaimed, rushing over to his bed. Leah rubbed some sanitizer on her hands as she watched her bend down to give him a gentle hug. She grabbed his chart from the end of his bed again and noted down his vitals as the three of them exchanged their greetings, also reading through what the doctor had written earlier.
“Dr. Jameson was in here earlier. He explained that we’ve taken you off oxygen, right?” She hated to break up their happy reunion, but she had to give him some information before she bid her farewell. They all turned to look at her as she disposed of the chart again. “You understand that if you experience any shortness of breath, any dizzyness, anything at all you have to call, right?” She asked, looking directly at Spencer.
“Well, I’m a doctor, so, of course I understand.” His response brought a smile onto her lips.
“Well, you’re not that kind of doctor,” Leah laughed, throwing his previous words back at his face. “Do you need anything before I leave?” She asked and Spencer shook his head. “Well, if you do, don’t hesitate to call,” she told him seriously while pointing at the caller behind his head. She turned to leave when Spencer spoke up again.
“Does, uhm, does that mean I’ll be your God?” Leah was stunned a little, not fully understanding what he meant, but then she remembered how she’d previously joked about being a God to her interns. Wow, her brain was working slowly. She needed more coffee.
“Hey! Don’t push it now.” She tried to be stern, but her lips tugged upwards on their own accord. She then bid her goodbyes, shutting the door on the way out.
My Heart Beats For You (5) - s. todoroki
Warnings: near death experience, a lot of emotions, blood, mentions of [y/n]’s abusive ex, crying Bakugo (I’m putting this here bc we all know something is serious if he cries), stabbing, just full on sadness and angst
Pairing: shoto todoroki x fem!reader
Prompt: You and Todoroki have been sneaking around behind everyone’s backs for three months; but one extremely euphoric night—that results in shaky legs and not being able to walk the next day—leads to not only your secret getting out, but also someone else’s. And a shit ton of drama.
Previously:
“Well, it’s nice to see you again.” he says, just as your door opens to reveal your twin brother.
“Is everything OK, sis. I thought I heard-” he cuts himself off at the scene in front of him. “Kaji?!”
Present:
Izuku starts to activate his quirk, ready to attack; but in the blink of an eye, Kaji is out the window.
You’re laying there, a knife in your stomach, choking on your own blood.
Izuku runs to your side, screaming: “MOM CALL AN AMBULANCE!” he lifts your head up, so you stop choking on your own blood.
Inko walks into the room, phone up to her ear as she calls the emergency line.
“Stay with me, [Y/n],” Izuku cries, his tears falling on your cheeks and mixing with yours.
“I love you, Izuku,” you manage to get out. “T-tell Shoto . . . that I l-love him,” you stutter, coughing every now and then.
“You’re not dying, you hear me! You can’t die!”
The paramedics rush in, pulling your brother off of you and getting you on the stretcher.
Izuku rides in the ambulance with you, whilst your mother calls all your friends to let them know what happened.
Izuku holds your hand the whole ride to the hospital, talking to you to keep you alive.
You pull the oxygen mask off your face, “Zuku, we both know this is it for me,” you say.
“Put that mask back on and stop talking like that,” he puts the mask over your face.
“I’m gonna take a nap,” you say, your eyelids getting heavy.
“No, no!” Izuku says, grabbing your hand. “You stay awake. Look at me,” he says, tears streaming down his face.
“You gotta fight. If not for me, fight for Todoroki,” he says.
You were about to say something, but you black out.
“It’s okay, she’s-,” just as the paramedic goes to reassure Izuku, your heart monitor starts going crazy.
“She’s crashing!” the same paramedic starts CPR.
“We gotta get that knife out!” The other paramedic says.
“We can’t! She’ll bleed out quicker.” The one giving you CPR exclaims.
The doors open, doctors rushing to get the stretcher into the hospital. “[Y/n] Midoriya, age 16, female. Stab wound to the abdomen.” The paramedic states as they wheel you into the hospital. “This is her brother Izuku.”
“OK,” one of the interns pulls Izuku aside, “they’re going to take your sister into surgery. You can’t go any further than-”
“IS SHE OK?!”
Izuku looks over to see Todoroki being held back by crying Bakugo and Kirishima.
Izuku makes his way over to his friends, the intern not far behind. “I will personally keep you guys updated on her status,” she says.
“What the fuck happened?” Bakugo exclaims after they all sit down in the waiting room.
“Kaji,” Izuku mumbles, clenching his fists.
“What?!” Todoroki’s head snaps up from his hands, looking at Izuku like he just saw a ghost. “You’re telling me he was never locked up after last time?!”
“They couldn’t find him,” Kirishima sniffles.
“His quirk is super speed,” Izuku says.
“How do you know it was Kaji who did this?” Todoroki asks.
“I saw him. I walked in to see him on top of her, holding the knife that was in her stomach,” he cries.
“Did he-” —Todoroki has trouble getting his question out, the mere thought of Kaji touching you making his blood boil— “touch her?”
“Other than his hand over her mouth, I don’t think so,” Izuku says, wiping his nose with the sleeve of his hoodie.
For some reason, that answer didn’t make Todoroki feel any better.
“I’m going to find that bastard and burn him to ash!” Bakugo screams, standing up as little sparks come from the palm of his hands.
“Bakugo,” Kirishima says, standing up behind the blond and placing his hand on his shoulder. “You should stay here, she’s going to want to see us when she wakes up,” he says softly.
“If she wakes up,” Bakugo snaps, turning around and wrapping his arms around Kirishima’s waist, burying his face in the redhead’s chest as he cries.
Kirishima doesn’t hesitate in wrapping his arms around his boyfriend, trying his best to comfort him in this moment. The fact that Bakugo is an emotional wreck is really getting to the other three.
After what felt like days, the intern from earlier makes her way over to the group. “She’s out of surgery. We called Recovery Girl and she showed up at the perfect timing to save [Y/n]. But she did suffer from loss of oxygen to the brain, due to crashing so many times before Recovery Girl showed up. So we have no clue if or when she’ll wake up,” she frowns.
“So she’s in a coma?” Izuku questions.
“Yea but she is alive.”
“Can we see her?” Todoroki asks.
“Of course, all four of you I assume?” she smiles at the couple cuddling on the chair.
“Yeah,” Kirishima nods. “Hey, Bakugo,” he whispers to the sleeping boy. “She’s out of surgery.”
Bakugo yawns, standing up from his spot in Kirishima’s lap and stretching.
Kirishima follows suit, and the four guys follow the intern to your room.
She stops outside the door, “I’m just going to warn you, she’s hooked up to some machines. They’re breathing for her.” she explains.
“She can’t breathe on her own?” Izuku questions. If he wasn’t out of tears, he’d be crying.
“Sadly no,” the intern says with a frown. “But Recovery Girl will be making daily visits to try and help your sister recover,” she adds, looking at Izuku.
He just nods as she opens the door and steps aside, allowing the four guys to enter your room.
Todoroki is quickly scooting a chair by your bedside, taking your limp hand in his and intertwining your fingers.
Izuku scoots a chair up next to the other side of your bed, whilst Bakugo and Kirishima make themselves comfortable on the couch across from your bed.
“This is gonna be a long spring break.” Bakugo mumbles, wiping his tears before cuddling into Kirishima’s side.
To Be Continued . . .
Unbreakable
Pairing: Evan Buckley x Eddie Diaz Rating: T Warnings: None Words: 2.7k
Read on AO3
All it takes is one split second.
Buck had been right there beside him, talking into his radio, confirming they were on their way out.
And then he was gone.
The floor had caved in beneath them with a thunderous crack and somehow—Eddie still can’t fathom how— somehow, Buck had managed to shove Eddie to the side before disappearing in a shower of smoke and smouldering wood.
“Buck!” He screams, kneeling on the edge of the hole and peering over. He can see the yellow stripe on the back of Buck’s coat, unmoving beneath the debris. “Captain Nash, this is Eddie.” He fumbles with the radio. “Buck is down. He went through the floor, I can’t— he’s not moving.”
He doesn’t wait for the reply. Eddie scrambles to his feet heading back towards the staircase that will take him to the ground floor.
“Chim is on his way to you.” The radio crackles to life. “Can you get down to Buck and give us a report on his condition?”
“Yeah, copy that.” Eddie takes the stairs, two at a time. “I’ve almost got him.” He skids to a halt, dropping to his knees beside Buck. As far as he can tell, the turnout gear has protected him from serious burns, but the fact that Buck’s unconscious is a serious concern.
It’s probably only been a minute or two, time moves at a strange pace when you’re trying not to panic, but any blow hard enough to knock someone out is dangerous.
“Buck?” Eddie knocks away bits of debris. “Can you hear me? Open your eyes, cariño.” He rubs his closed fist against Buck’s chest, breathing a sigh or relief when it prompts a groan from the younger firefighter. “Hey, there you are. Just stay still for me.” His heart is still pounding as he clears a space around Buck, afraid to move him before Chim arrives but also mindful of the burning building around them.
“Eddie?”
“I’m right here.” He leans into Buck’s field of vision. “I’m going to get you out of here, okay?”
Buck blinks up at him, his eyes fluttering shut for a second before he drags them back open.
“Don’t even think about it,” Eddie warns, glancing up as another figure arrives. “Eyes open Buck, or I’ll tell Chim what you said about him this morning.”
“What’s this?” Chim asks, kneeling opposite Eddie. “Buck’s talking shit about me again?”
“Nothing that wasn’t true,” Buck mumbles.
“If you say so, Buckaroo.” Chim moves quickly, assessing Buck’s ability to move before nodding to Eddie.
“Alright, time to get out of here,” Eddie says. “Let us do all the work okay?”
“You’re good at that, right Buck?” Chim pipes up, earning a pained smile from their patient. They each hook an arm across their shoulders and heft Buck upright. He groans, eyes squeezing shut from the movement.
Eddie and Chimney carry him out into the fresh air, carefully lying him down away from the fire, then get to work.
Hen joins them as they strip him of his jacket and start a more thorough assessment of his injuries. Eddie kneels by his head, keeping up a steady stream of reassuring chatter as Hen and Chim poke and prod and jostle.
Buck doesn’t say anything, just gives short jerking nods when he’s asked a question, eyes scrunched up in pain and discomfort.
Eddie reaches down to grab Buck’s hand; the one Hen hasn’t just inserted an IV into and gives it a squeeze. The fingers in his grip tighten in response.
“Ready to transport, cap,” Hen calls out when she’s done. The three of them get Buck on the backboard and transfer him to the stretcher.
“Bobby?” Eddie glances over at his captain, still clutching Buck’s hand.
“Go,” Bobby tells him. “Keep us updated.”
With a nod, Eddie follows Chimney up into the back of the ambulance.
The ride to the hospital is tense, even with Chimney cracking jokes to lighten the mood.
Buck is in and out, drowsy with a probable concussion and who knows what else. Eddie can feel the panic clawing at his throat, but he manages to keep it together, never once letting go of Buck’s hand until they reach the hospital. He focuses on the point of contact, using the warmth of Buck’s skin to keep grounded and remind himself that Buck will be okay.
It feels like it takes no time at all to reach the hospital. Hen does the handover while Chim and Eddie help transfer Buck from the stretcher to a bed.
“Let us know what happens,” Chim says, giving Eddie a clap on the shoulder, and promising to be back after their shift.
The hospital staff try to send Eddie away too, but Buck has come around enough that he is not having that.
“I’m his partner,” Eddie explains, laying a calming hand on Buck’s shoulder. One of the nurses has cut away his pants to inspect the burns on his leg and another is tearing through his shirt. “Please, I won’t get in the way.”
Buck is pretty out of it once they give him some pain relief. He gets wheeled away for imaging tests and Eddie takes the opportunity duck outside to text Bobby an update and call Carla to ask if she can take Chris to stay with his aunt.
Chris, of course, immediately wants to come and stay with Eddie at the hospital.
“It’ll be boring, kiddo,” Eddie tells him. “Just lots of waiting around and Buck will probably be asleep.”
“But what about when he wakes up?” Chris asks. “He shouldn’t wake up alone, dad.” And Eddie just can’t with this kid. He wonders, not for the first time, how he managed to raise someone with such a big heart.
“He won’t be alone,” Eddie promises. “I’ll be here, and maybe tía Pepa can bring you over in the morning. I know Buck will want to see you when he wakes up, but tonight he needs his rest.”
“Okay, dad.”
Eddie doesn’t need to see his son to know how hard he’s pouting at the phone right now.
“Tell Buck I love him.”
“I will. You be good for Pepa. Love you.”
“Love you too, dad.”
Eddie disconnects the call with a sigh then goes to check his messages. There’s a text message from Chimney saying he’d called Maddie.
“Shit.” Eddie quickly scrolls to her number. He’d completely forgotten in all the chaos—Maddie should have been the first person he’d called.
“Eddie?”
“Maddie, I’m so sorry—”
“Don’t worry about it, Chim called me and let me know what happened. How is my little brother?”
“He’s going to be okay.” Eddie rattles off some of the words that had been thrown around in the emergency room. “Concussion, second degree burns on his legs, maybe cracked ribs?” He takes a deep breath. “They’re doing some more testing to determine the severity of the concussion, but they didn’t seem overly concerned.”
“That’s good news at least,” Maddie says. “Evan just can’t do things by halves can he?”
Eddie huffs out a soft laugh. “Half-assing it just isn’t in his vocabulary.” The ball of anxiety that’s been sitting in his chest for the better part of an hour finally starts to unwind.
“I’ll be there soon,” Maddie says. “And Chim said he was going to head over. Have you eaten yet? I’ll bring you something.”
“You don’t need to do that,” Eddie assures her.
“I know, but you must be starving. Chim definitely will be.”
“Thanks Maddie.”
“I’ll see you soon, okay?”
“Yeah.” The call ends with a beep and Eddie shoves his phone back into his pocket. He’s still wearing his turnouts, he realises belatedly. His coat is draped over the chair behind him, his helmet balances on a knee.
“Mr Diaz?” One of the nurses beckons him over. “We’re admitting Evan,” she tells him. “If you’d like to come with me, I’ll take you up to his room.”
“He’s okay?” Eddie follows her down the corridor towards the elevator.
“Nothing nasty turned up in the MRI,” she explains. “His helmet protected him from any skull fractures, but he still got his brains rattled about pretty good.”
The elevator doors open with a ding, and they step inside.
“He’s got a couple of cracked ribs and the burns on his legs will need to be monitored to ensure they don’t get infected.”
“How long before he can come home?” Eddie asks.
“His doctor wants to keep him overnight to monitor the concussion, but all going well, he’ll likely be released tomorrow, maybe the day after at the latest.”
When the lift stops, she leads him out to a room on the ward. Eddie pushes the door open to step inside.
“Buck?”
The lights are low, but it’s still easy to make him out on the bed. Eddie drags a chair over, taking a seat at Buck’s side.
“How are you feeling?”
“Like I fell through a floor and had the whole house land on me,” Buck croaks, looking a lot more alert than the last time Eddie had seen him. He’s still pale and drawn, but it’s good to hear his voice.
“Well—”
“Don’t say it,” Buck groans. He swallows, his face paling even more, something Eddie wouldn’t have thought possible. His birthmark stands out in stark relief against his skin.
“What’s wrong?” Eddie asks, reaching for Buck’s hand. He rubs circles into the skin of Buck’s wrist.
“Nausea.”
“I can help with that.” The nurse who’d shown Eddie up to the room is still hovering nearby. “I’ll go have a chat with the doctor and be back in a minute.” She hands Buck an emesis basin before she leaves, just in case.
Alone in the room, Eddie reaches with his free hand to run his fingers through Buck’s hair. He’s careful not to use too much pressure and aggravate anything but Buck seems to appreciate it, sinking down further into his pillow.
“How are you really feeling?” Eddie asks, his thumb trailing across Buck’s temple.
“Like shit,” Buck mumbles. “Nothing… hurts? But I know it’s going to later.” He shuts his eyes, swallowing convulsively to keep from being sick, clutching the basin in his free hand.
Fortunately, the nurse returns before he has to use it. She gives him something and leaves them alone again.
“You should get back to Chris.” Nausea dealt with, Buck is loose-limbed and sleepy, blinking up at Eddie.
“Chris is fine,” Eddie assures him. “He’s spending the night with Pepa. He wants to come by and see you tomorrow if you’re feeling up to it.”
“Mm, I’d like that.” Buck’s eyes drift shut and his breathing evens out into sleep.
Eddie watches him for a moment, still running his fingers through Buck’s hair, until he’s sure he’s truly out. He pulls out his phone to see that Maddie, Chim, Bobby and Hen have all arrived.
He stands, pressing a kiss to Buck’s forehead and goes downstairs to meet his family.
~
Maddie is the one who convinces Eddie to go home.
He’s grimy with sweat and soot from the fire they had been attending and she gives him her best big sister stare and tells him under no uncertain terms that he stinks.
“And I mean that in a loving way,” she says, handing over a box of Chinese takeout.
He sits outside with Chim and Hen to eat, while Maddie and Bobby head upstairs to check on Buck for themselves.
“How’s our boy doing?” Hen asks.
“He’ll be fine,” Eddie says. “He’ll be sore and grumpy when I take him hope, but you know Buck.”
“Yeah, I don’t envy you there,” Chim says. “Buck is the worst patient, so have fun with that.”
After they eat Bobby gives him a ride back to the station to collect his car.
“I’ve called Marcus in to cover your shift tomorrow,” Bobby says as Eddie is climbing out of the car. “If you still need time after your days off, let me know.”
“Thanks Bobby.”
“Don’t mention it, you just take care of Buck for us. And take care of yourself too.” Bobby drives off and Eddie walks to his car before he starts getting too many questions from B shift. Buck is a well-liked member of the 118 and everyone wants to send Eddie off with well-wishes to pass on.
It’s late by the time Eddie finally gets home.
With Chris off at Pepa’s and Buck at the hospital, the house is dark and quiet. Too quiet, in Eddie’s opinion.
He turns the TV just to give himself some background noise while he showers and changes for bed.
It takes a long time to fall asleep.
~
Eddie picks Chris up in the morning on his way back to the hospital.
Chris has a thousand questions about what happened, and will Buck be okay, and when can they bring him home.
It strikes Eddie that he’d said the same thing the night before. He’d asked the nurse when he could bring Buck home.
For all the time they spent together and as much as Buck was a part of the family with Eddie and Chris, he did still technically have his own apartment. Not that he used it that much. Eddie had been able to pack a bag using the clothes Buck had stuffed into a drawer in Eddie’s room. There was a toothbrush on the sink for when Buck stayed the night.
Maybe it was time for Eddie to finally ask Buck to move in.
The thought keeps him distracted the whole way to the hospital. He’s still mulling it over as he helps Chris down from the back seat and leads the way up to Buck’s room.
“He’s asleep, dad.” Chris is disappointed when they open the door and Buck is still fast asleep.
He’s got a bit of colour in his cheeks this morning. He doesn’t look quite so pale against the starched white hospital sheets.
“You sleep a lot too when you’re not feeling well,” Eddie reminds his son, pulling up a second chair and moving Chris’s crutches to a spot where they’re not going to trip anyone up. “Have you got your game with you?”
Nodding, Chris pulls his Switch from his backpack, content to play his game while they wait for Buck to wake.
It doesn’t take long. The thing with hospitals is that they’re never really quiet and Buck jerks awake when something is dropped just outside his room.
“Hey, you.” Eddie leans forward in his chair and waits for Buck to get his bearings. “How are you feeling?”
“Ugh, I feel like shi—” he notices Chris on the other side of the bed, “-t.” He grimaces. “Sorry, brain could thing of anything fast enough.”
“I think we’ll let it slide this time,” Eddie says, grinning.
“Dad says sometimes bad words are okay.” Chris puts away his game and stands, shifting his weight so he can lean against the bed for balance. “I’m glad you’re okay Buck, I missed you last night.”
“I missed you too bud,” Buck says, reaching out to ruffle Chris’s curls. “Just seeing you makes me feel better already.”
Chris beams at the words and Eddie feels his heart swell.
“So,” Buck shifts on the bed, his face tightens as he jars something, probably his ribs, but he doesn’t mention it. “Any idea when I can get out of here?”
“I was talking to a nurse last night who said you’ll probably be released today,” Eddie tells him. “But we’ll have to wait until the doctor gives you the okay.”
“Hospitals are the worst,” Buck groans, his head tipping back against the pillows. “Right Chris?” Chris nods and Buck pats the bed. “Why don’t you show me the game you were playing while we wait.”
~
Buck is discharged late that afternoon.
He makes a fuss about using the wheelchair, but when he tries to stand all the blood drains from his face and he has to sit back down real fast.
“Ready to try the wheelchair now?” Eddie asks him, keeping a gentle hand on Buck’s shoulder in case he tries to faceplant again.
“Yeah.” The word comes out in one long breath. “Sorry, I didn’t think it would hurt that much.”
“When we get home, I’ll make up the couch for you,” Eddie says, “and you’re staying there for the rest of the week.”
“Home?” Buck glances up sharply.
“My home,” Eddie clarifies, then after a moment’s hesitation says, “Our home.”
“I like the sound of that,” Buck says, a slow smile spreading across his face. “Okay Eds, take me home.”
White Lies (Pt. 01 of 21)
Pairing: Keanu Reeves X Reader
Word count: 2.1 K
Summary: Keanu found the girl almost dead, in the wrecks of what was once her car. While she was in surgery, stuck in a coma, he gathered the best doctors of New York to attend to her. They told him she is likely to have some kind of brain damage, what may lead to memory loss. And this possibility added up wit the fact that she's pregnant, made the council come up with an odd idea. They asked Keanu to pretend to be her husband, since the stress of finding out everything that happened could put the baby in danger. He reluctantly agreed, but only if she does has some kind of memory loss. He still goes she'll wake up soon, with her memories intact.
But when you finally wake up, there's nothing inside. You're quick to find your head is empty, void, like a blank canvas. The only thing that brings you some relief, that makes you feel less lonely is the mention of a husband. And you can't wait to meet him, because you know you can't deal with this by yourself.
Deceit
Life has a weird way of turning things around. Of putting people in the most unlikely scenarios, and leaving them on their own to try and figure out what to do next.
Keanu's mind has been restless since the moment he saw the bleeding, unconscious girl inside that wreck of a car, four days ago.
It was on the side of the empty road, and he was just about to drive pass it when something made him stop. Whoever caused it was gone, and there were no words to describe the sting on his chest when he saw her. The next moments happened in such a blur that he still has a hard time trying to put everything together. He remembers carefully lifting the girl's body off the wheel. He remembers checking her heartbeats, so faint and weak. And he surely remembers calling an ambulance and staying there, hoping, praying she wouldn't be just a corpse when they got there.
He couldn't quite see the extension of the damage since he was too scared to move her around. The girl wouldn't wake up, it didn't matter how many times he called, and as time passed, minutes passing by impossibly slow, he felt his heart sinking. Over and over again, he placed two fingers on her neck, just to make sure she was still alive. Her breathing was shallow and fast, and Keanu couldn't even notice in his agitation. There was way too much blood coming from a wound on her forehead, and more staining her light blue blouse. He couldn't believe he'd watch her die, right there before his eyes.
A wave of relief washed over him when the ambulance came, and he watched, helplessly, as they put her on the stretcher, pushing it to the back of the ambulance. A man had spoken to him, he's not sure what, but his legs carried him to the ambulance with her, and there, seated between two paramedics, he looked at the girl, once again praying she'd survive the ride.
She did. She was strong, the doctors said, and had successfully recovered from the two surgeries she had to go through. There was a lot of internal bleeding, they said, and now, the girl was in a coma. And nobody could tell how long it'd take for her to wake up.
But that was four days ago. Today, still at the hospital, Keanu tries to focus on whatever the council of doctors are saying. He had paid for everything, and he wouldn't have anything less than the best health care for the girl. (Y/N), he had found out. A beautiful name, that he thought suited the girl perfectly. Seated on the head of the table, Doctor Wright speaks of her condition, but Keanu's mind has drifted away a while ago.
“Mr. Reeves?” The woman, Alice Harris, gets his attention. She's the psychologist involved. The only reason why she's here is that there was damage on (Y/N)'s brain. There's a sixty percent chance that her memories were affected. They don't know how much yet, but they'll be ready to deal with whatever happens when she finally opens her eyes again. If she ever does. But Keanu won't give this possibility any thoughts. “Are you willing to do this?”
“Do what?” He didn't want to come out as not being interested in this. He was. But he can't pretend he knows what he would be agreeing with.
“Mr. Reeves, I know you're also affected by this. We all can see it. But we need you to have your mind clear.” The surgeon speaks, his hands cupped together, lying above (Y/N)'s papers. “If not, we'll place her under our care until we can contact her mother-in-law.”
“Mother-in-law?” How much of the conversation did Keanu lose?
“Let me.” Dr. Wright says. “Mr. Reeves, we have made some research on our patient's life. (Y/N) had just moved here, and unfortunately, she lost her husband only two weeks ago in a work-related accident.” This time, Keanu pays attention, his eyes focused on the man. “The only other person she has here is a friend named Laura Thompson, and her mother-in-law lives in Argentina, Lucia Davis. A few friends from her hometown, but nobody else. Nobody here who can help her through... Her condition.”
“There's still a chance she'll remember, right? Forty percent.” Keanu could only imagine what it'd be like. He'd never wished that on anyone, waking up one day with nothing inside. No record of who you were before. And he didn't want this for her. Not after what she's been through. “If she's alright then–”
“It wasn't about this condition I was talking about.” He cuts off, sighing and exchanging a glance with the neurologist. “Mr. Reeves, (Y/N) is three weeks pregnant.”
There's a sudden buzz on Keanu's ears, as his brain tries to process what he just heard. He's quick to make the math though. Three weeks pregnant, lost her husband two weeks ago... She was just starting to plan everything, probably just about to break the news to him or the family, and then, he died. That was probably the reason for her accident. Driving fast, tears clouding her sight, wondering what she'd do now, all alone, with a kid on the way. “Everything you need me to do, I will. I'll pay for anything she needs, it doesn't matter how much.” The words flow out, almost a living thing.
“Dr. Harris raises a hand to stop Dr. Wright, who was just about to say something. “Mr. Reeves, as we already said, we fear that our patient will have some kind of memory loss if she wakes up. And people on her position are always scared, and the feeling of being lost may drive them into self-destructive behaviors.” The woman speaks slow, and Keanu sighs. He's suddenly angry, wanting people to just spit everything out so he can understand what's going on and decide what to do with it. Bouncing his leg under the table, he nods, urging her to continue. “In that scenario, knowing about a pregnancy can make things take a bad turn, and even put the unborn child in danger.”
“What will you have me do?” He bursts out, impatiently. “If you need another specialist, or transfer her to some other hospital, do it.”
“What we need is far more complicated than that.” She continues. “A little unusual, but I believe it will work.” She takes a deep breath, fixing her glasses. “Mr. Reeves, we need you to introduce yourself as being (Y/N)'s husband.”
“What?” He inquires, unable to believe his ears.
“If she wakes up–”
“When.” Keanu is quick to correct her, his voice letting it show how anxious he is.
“When, forgive me.” Dr. Harris mutters. “It will be better if she has someone close. And a husband, since she's with child, will certainly give her peace of mind until... Until she remembers. If she remembers and if she does have a memory loss in the first place.”
Keanu looks down at his hands, resting on the wooden table before him. He should say no. This is way too much, too much of a crazy idea to follow up. But these are the best doctors money could pay for, and he did say he'd do anything that could help her. But he'd never thought this would be what she needed. There was no other option to him, that much was obvious, even if he didn't want to admit it right way. “Alright then.” He agrees, nodding.
“Good. We'll contact her friend and mother-in-law to let them know about this.” Dr. Wright says, getting up. “I'll need you to attend some meetings, Mr. Reeves, there will be some things we'll need to discuss.”
“Sure.” As if he hasn't been coming to the hospital every day to visit the girl.
The days start passing a little faster now, as Keanu meets up with the psychologist to make things ready in case she wakes up. They said there's no need to rush, that it may take several weeks, months even... But Keanu won't share their skepticism. He believes she's coming back soon, so he'll have everything in place for the biggest lie he'd ever tell. He has the excuses in place, the backstory, everything. He even has the fake ring already, and he never felt so bad as he did when buying it. But still, he carries it in his pocket every time he goes visit her, hoping she'll wake up.
Two weeks have passed, and today, as usual, Keanu looks through the open blinders, his eyes set on her sleeping figure. (Y/N) looks so peaceful in his eyes, as if she's simply sleeping. He can't help but admire her beauty, even in a simple hospital gown, with her hair a little messy, she looks pretty. His eyes drift a little, all the way to her stomach. It's still flat, but he knows there's life in there, growing. A life that will need their mother. “C'mon, (Y/N). Wake up.” Keanu mutters, his voice barely a whisper.
After a few more minutes, he leaves, walking slowly through the hospital, all the way to his car in the underground parking lot. On the drives seat, he looks at the wheel, the door still open, and he thinks. About everything at the same time. The wrecked car, the blood, the girl, the pregnancy, the lie... It all comes flooding his mind as he runs a hand through his dark hair. He's so drowned in his head that he almost doesn't hear the phone ring. But when he does, Keanu easily finds it in his pocket, not even looking at the screen before picking up. “Hello.” He mutters, ready to dismiss whoever it is. He needs to go home, to sleep, to put his mind in place.
“Mr. Reeves. She's awake.”
You still can't put things together. The woman has been talking you through it since yesterday morning when you crawled back into consciousness. She told you everything. How you ended up here, to begin with, but it doesn't matter how hard you try, you can't remember it. In fact, you can't remember anything. When you began to freak out yesterday, a nurse came and gave you something that now forced you to calm down. So you just lie there, staring at Dr. Harris as she tries to help you. But she's failing because your mind is completely empty. The tears keep rolling down, one after the other, and it doesn't matter how much you dry them, more come soon after.
How is it even possible? How can someone lose everything they were? Everything they had? Shaking your head no, you close your eyes shut, not wanting to listen anymore. Her questions remain unanswered because you just don't know the answer them. The only reason you know your name and age is because she told you. But all the rest... It's a mystery. It's gone.
“I can't.” You mutter, running a hand through your forehead. “I can't remember. You're not helping.” Crying again, you bite back a sob. “Please, just... Don't I have anyone? Parents? Friends? Anyone... I...” You can't be alone in the world. There has to be someone, a familiar face who will bring something back.
“You're parents passed away when you were young, sweetie.” She says, and another sob erupts from your mouth. “But you have a husband.”
You're not sure how you feel about it, with too many conflicted sentiments flooding your heart. But you do feel... Relieved? You're not alone. There's someone who could help you through, who knows you. “I-is he here?” You stutter. “Can I see him?”
“Sure.” She stands up from the armchair she positioned next to your bed. “I'll call him.”
Nodding, your eyes are on her back as she leaves. Using the bed's remote control, you move it up until you're in a seating position. The minutes go by and you're still alone. The blinders are closed, so you can only see shadows passing by. Maybe he got tired of waiting. Maybe he–.
“(Y/N).” The strong, deep voice calling your name gets your attention, and your eyes find the man standing some feet away from the bed. He's... Gorgeous. Tall, with long dark hair, which falls on his face, hiding his eyes a little. His beard gives him an atmosphere of mystery but makes him even more handsome.
Is that him? Are you really married to this man? “Are you...” The words fail you, and your voice fades.
“I'm Keanu Reeves. Your husband.”
