I've never seen anyone talk about how perfectly Ship in a Bottle by Fin Argus represents the story and themes of Captain Flint, so here's my mini essay that nobody asked for.

One of the first verses is "Everything you have earned is a ship" which is so true for Flint. He's worked for years and years in Nassau to try and build something new, but at the end of the day all he has are his ship and crew.

Then there's, "You set sail alone, there is no crew, No one on the deck who can help you, This is all your own battle to win, This is your ship and you are the captain." Flint left England with no one but Miranda. He had no one to help him get started and even when he does acquire a crew and "friends," they are on wildly different journeys, fighting wildly different battles than he is. I feel like those last two lines are things Flint tells himself aswell, reminders that keep him going so he never forgets the immense amount of pressure he's put on himself.

The song has a lot of lines about drowning or the idea of the bottle cracking. "Ocean waters rising above your neck, You feel the glass start to crack." First of all, the motif of a ship in a bottle ties perfectly with Flints themes of isolation. The song talks about how the bottle contains not only the ship, but the crushing weight of the captain's emotions and lies. It hammers home the idea that the fragile glass bottle and the ship it contains are falling apart because the captain refuses to be honest with himself or with others.

Finally, there's the lines: "Flying flags of ships that have long since, Sat at the floor of the sea, but in defense...." These are so fucking Flint coded jesus christ. Flint is fighting a battle for a man that died years ago. He is holding onto loyalties that are so far gone no one aside from Miranda could possibly understand them. He is "flying flags," of ideas, of goals, that no one is even aware still exist.

I could literally go on for ages longer about this song and why exactly it fits Flint but seriously go listen to it. I am not even remotely normal about this topic.

HAVING A MELT DOWN BECAUSE OF THIS AAAAAAAAA

being a med/premed student and having zayne as your boyfriend is literally a godsend. he helps you study for your exams, quizzing you on each topic until you nail them down and explaining those you just can't seem to wrap your head around in a pace most comfortable to you. he's patient, always adjusting how he teaches things in whichever way you can grasp them quickly. sometimes, he likes to challenge you, asking questions in between each point of the procedure as a way to work your brain. other times, he guides you carefully through it, holding your hand each step of the way. he speaks slowly, emphasizing the key points and allowing the little gears in your mind to turn.

he makes sure to reward you accordingly. a kiss on the tip of your nose for every five questions you get right. on the cheek for every ten. one on the lips if you can explain concepts or procedures without stuttering. a whole night of cuddle time if you manage to make it through your study sessions.

and something more, something a little heated if he feels you've surpassed your limits for the day and yet you insist on doing more. one hand on your thigh, his hot breath fanning across the skin behind your ear as he coaxes you into going to bed, and you're a goner, already mindlessly following zayne to your bedroom with a few disgruntled complaints about how unfair he is muttered under your breath.

how else is he supposed to ensure you get enough rest anyway?

and he talks you through it on days where it's exceptionally hard. when you feel like you're drowning in coursework and just barely passing test scores. when you lose sight of the future and begin to question the decisions you made. he moves your hair out of the way and wipes the tears off your face, reassuring you that it'll get better soon, and he'll always be by your side through ups and downs.
