How is he? What could I expect from getting him?

- He does care about you

- He can be sweet

But cons:

- He will not respect your boundaries ever

- He will SPY ON YOU because he does not trust you even when he says he does

- He will keep you locked inside your house for years just so he can control you

- He keeps treating you like a child. And I don’t mean ”he sets boundaries” or makes reasonsble decisions, I mean BABY TALKING to you, can’t accept the fact that you are older than 10 (and some things he does I would even be embarrassed about at age 10)…

- Example of the above, just the other day he tried to literally feed me?? Like he grabbed my fork and went ”open up!”… sometimes I’m literally afraid to come home to find how he switched out my bed for a baby crib or something

- Boyfriends??? No no. He won’t accept that. He makes a scene if they dare to stand next to me. Actually he’s like this with boys in general.

- Have kicked out boyfriends AND friends because he’s mad

- I literally had to attend a school in secret because he wouldn’t let me attend it

- My aunt could not say she was my aunt because if she would, he would take me away again, as he wanted to escape everyone of my mom’s past

- Oh Yeah. My mom died and instead of taking care of it and maybe… idk help me grieve he just took me around the globe, moving to a new country all the time, escaping everything. It wasn’t until we moved back to BA that I started getting to know stuff. What did he think would happen if I found out more about my mom?? That I would… ”become too sad”??

- When I complained that I feel controlled, locked up and miserable he just acts like I am overreacting and ”can’t understand” why I am like this

So I mentioned previously that my childhood enemy’s mother once babysat me and my sisters when I was like 8. Let’s call her ”Priscila”.

So she and my mom used to be friends, probably only due to the fact that they had children at the same time so they could bond over that, because they have nothing else in common. Now, while I did not get along with her daughter, I did not have much against her. Until this night.

It was me (8), my twin sisters (5) and my second youngest sister (11 months). We at first did not bother our babysitter that much. We just sat on the couch watching TV. That was until she turned it off. We all protested and she said it was not good for us to watch so much TV. I argued that there was a show we did not want to miss and she was like "I don't care, you can't watch it". I didn't listen to her and put on the TV again. She got visibly annoyed, and once again turned it off. One of the twins asked what we are supposed to do instead and she was like "I don't know, find something to do."

So, naturally, we decided to play evil witches. I knew how to make water boil on the stove, so I put it on while the twins carried our sister towards the boiling water. We were just about to lower her into it when Priscila ran inside. Now, we weren’t ACTUALLY gonna boil her, we were just playing! But she was not amused. She snatched our sister and yelled at us and we were like ”you told us to find something to do so this is what we do”. She concluded we must be hungry if we have turned to cannibalism, so she made us some dinner.

Now here's the thing: We are picky eaters. Our parents did not tell her that. Or they did, and she just ignored it. Because she cooked something, I don't recall what it was, and we just refused to eat it. It was too much sauce, and different stuff touched each other. She just called us spoiled and that we need to learn to eat. We TRIED, but we could not get it down our throats. I took one bite and felt like throwing up. It was physically impossible to eat it. But "because she could eat it", she argued all of us could. Then our youngest sister needed a diaper change, so Priscila had to go away with her. I honestly think she took one for the team, so that Priscila woud be distracted for a bit.

Because, as she was gone, we just threw her food in the trash, went to get ice cream from the freezer and then decided to go watch TV. Well, I went to watch TV. The twins decided to go wake up the spirits that live in our house (my house is haunted, I don't have time to explain it). I guess Priscila has never changed a diaper before because she was gone for like 30 minutes (again, she has a daughter herself, so idk why she sucks at taking care of children). When she came back, the room was pitch black. I had to turn off the TV so that the chance of a spirit being awoken would be bigger. Suddenly all the lights flickered, and our great-grandma's spirit awoke. She's kind, but she does not like strangers, so she started yelling at Priscila. Priscila got super scared and ran out of the house and called my parents to get home, because their house is possessed! Our parents were like "yeah we know calm down".

Our great-grandma was tired and went back to rest after a while, and Priscila was now convinced it was a prank. We told her no, we just wanted to see the spirits, it was totally unrelated to her. But she wasn't too sure and she forced us to sit on the couch and not move for the rest of the evening.

She never babysat us again after that. She told our mom we were devils and my mom was like "I don't think I want you to babysit anymore".

Also, she told me that when I was a baby, all she did was feed me and put me to bed. My dad was the one changing diapers and wiping baby vomit and stuff. If he wasn’t home she apparently just let me sit in my waste because she refused.

To make it simple: I did sorta have a crush on her for many years. It's the reason I MOVED TO ANOTHER COUNTRY. She sorta had a thing for me too, but she also had so much else going on and... well, she said it was ok that I said this, but she's not as good with romantic commitment, she feels more comfortable with friendship - especially since she was getting used to a new country she had moved to and stuff, and just being friends with me like always was one of the things that was the same. And I get that. Though, I think I kinda was more pushy to be something more with her at that time, I guess moving to another country for her really gave me the confidence. But, there was some drama, we sort of fell out for a while, mostly because there was this other boy who... well we're friends now but back then he was an asshole (he has not figured out it's me who has this blog so it's ok), and he constantly tried to flirt with my bestie. And she had not even gotten much romantic experience AT ALL, so having him be all over her AND then also me, I guess it made her feel harder to commit even more. I dated another girl for a while and then I realized that girl was horrible, and I just... took it upon myself and kissed my bestie.

Everything was wonderful for a while. We had so much fun, I was filled with joy. But, we never told our parents. I was so happy I forgot to call mine, and with her parents we just pretended like nothing. But I really feel like they felt like something went on.

Anyway, I realized eventually that I was more into this relationship than her, and I did not want to ruin things between us. She really tried, I know how much she loves me, but it just wasn't the right time in her life (apparently she had a crush on me some years later but then it was the wrong time for ME, so we sort of missed each other lol). So, we broke up. This was achy, but tbh, soon enough we went back to just be the best of friends like always - and we even got closer! Trying out dating was in the end actually a really good experience for us to have, and I am more happy to have taken that chance rather than never trying.

Anyway, remember how we never told our parents we were dating? Well, we also did not tell them we broke up. Since they had sort of figured out we were dating even if we didn't tell them, they CONTINUED to think so for so long. Like, my bestie dated a guy over the summer after we broke up, she never told them. I swear that it took them almost 6 months at least to realize.

Oof this is interesting because I guess I sorta always knew I was bi, even before I knew what bi was. But I didn’t really have a crush on the same gender until I was a teenager… and I didn’t really put a word on it until a certain confrontation with my guardian…

But I think an early sign was the fact that I had this imaginary friend that I pretended came to me at night and slept next to me at night. I always loved her comfort and warmth. At one point I recall I felt almost in love with her (I was like 7 but I did feel ”butterflies in my tummy”), so I abruptly switched her gender so that I could be in love with a boy. And then this imaginary friend sometimes was a boy, sometimes a girl, and sometimes neither.

So I guess I came up with a genderfluid imaginary friend that I sorta had a crush on, although it could also have been my need for comfort? But immediately feeling like I needed to change my imaginary friend’s gender if I felt I had a crush on them, yeah… maybe that says something.

So I guess I gotta tell the story of the ”confrontation” with my guardian since many of you have been asking.

I had a crush on a girl once. I had never had a crush on a girl before, so this was very odd for me. Now, my guardian could see that something was going on, and that I did not tell her. And she is weird; she does not really care about my life, but if I don’t tell her stuff, she will get mad at me for ”keeping secrets”.

Nonetheless I got closer to this girl I had a crush on, we spent a lot of time together. And we sorta had… a little thing going on. I never told my guardian since I couldn’t see how she would find this interesting. Also I wasn’t sure how she felt about two girls…

But somehow, she found out. I guess she spied on me, or forced her assistant to spy on me (which is arguably more creepy. Imagine being a grown man and a part of your job is spying on a teenage girl). She went inside my room one night with a strict expression, as she asked:

”Do you feel attracted to other girls?”

I was taken back, not prepared for that question. I immediately got nervous and went ”no, I like boys!”

”Yes, but do you feel attracted to other girls, too?” she asked. I asked why she was asking this, and she was like ”Just answer the question”

So I said ”…yes” and felt very guilty, as if I had been doing something wrong.

My guardian was silent for a moment, and then she went ”…very well”. Then she left the room.

We never talked about it ever again.

A/N: Hello~✨ Thank you so much for the request and the critique. I have now added some translations at the bottom of the fanfics because I forgot how weird tumblr can be about copy and pasting stuff😅. Also I hope that I didn’t disappoint with this as I was kinda struggling on what to write for this one.

-Still haven’t seen the movie so be warned I may get some stuff wrong-

Warnings: Grumpy x Sunshine, Female Reader/Female Pronouns, Barely using (Y/N) ((Sunny is their nickname not their name)), bioweapons, kinda graphic injuries, Outta Character and Outta pocket behavior, and Google Translated Spanish. ((Thank you @22carolina08 for reviewing it before I posted it))

The cackle of women enjoying the fruits of their labors filled the corridor of the abandoned warehouse as they surrounded the machine they were working on. It was a tall glass sphere with some kind of purple dust floating around inside while two titanium computers stood on either side of the device.

The three women standing around it were a set of Green Goblins who jumped from different dimensions to find a universe where there wasn’t an arachnid hero to stop them from using a bomb to take control of the city.

However they didn’t expect there to be four spidermen to be observing them around the property with one little spider hiding along the walls of their lair.

“Lyla,” Miguel whispers as he observes the meeting from the top of another warehouse. “Analyze the contents of that bomb and tell me how bad it is.”

The yellow AI materializes in front of him as Miguel tries to swat her away like a fly, not wanting her to compromise his location. Lyla rolls her eyes and explains, “The dust in that little bomb they have is made from spores of this rare mushroom. It’s been reported that inhaling the spores can cause drastic changes in behavior, mood swings, and mild hallucinations. Most cases detail paitents becoming aggressive and violent.”

Jessica’s voice buzzes through the intercom as she quips, “So they are planning on driving the city into a state of panic?”

“Sounds like it.” Ben Riley gruffs in annoyance. Miguel couldn’t help but roll his eyes as he knows the Scarlet Spider was still pissed that he couldn’t go ahead and stop the goblins.

“Sounds like a party to me, mate.” Hobie cracks as he watches from the ground. “Oi, Sunny, Dear? Wanna crash their party?”

“Yes, a party of people violently hurting each other and causing mass chaos does sound like fun.” Miguel grumbles saracastially before scolding Hobie. “She can’t reply to you, Brown. Not when she’s undercover.”

Miguel can barely make out her outline with the infared of his mask lens, but he can see his little jumping spider wander among the goblins unseen.

A big advantage to have someone with his beloved’s powers. She had almost every trait of the typical spider men, but she had a unique camouflaged ability. Without the suit Miguel made her, she can lower her heart rate and rapidly chill her body temperature so she can remain undetected by infared. She can also go invisible for a few moments without the suit, but both abilities are limited due to how strenuous it was on her being.

The suit allows her to remain undetected for a much longer time and prevents her from putting too much strain on her body. The slight heat the suit emits to keep her body functioning is the only thing that Miguel can use to track her. A major drawback of her gift is that physically she’s not as strong as the others, but she can handle herself in a fight.

Of course, he’s always there to help her. Her protective predator and his gentle prey. A match made in heaven as Jess always jokes.

“(L/N).” Miguel whispers into the com as he watches his love sneak around the device. “Attach the bug I gave you to the main computer so Lyla can deactivate the bomb.”

He makes a signal to the others to tell them to be ready for the ambush. The plan was suppose to be a simple get in and out. The invisible web shooter would get the bomb deactivated while Miguel, Hobie, and Ben rush in and take out the goblins. Jess served as support in case the villains ran past them. It was suppose to be an easy mission. Until it wasn’t.

As the bomb got deactivated, a light beep from the monitor causes the Goblins to turn around and notice that someone tampered with their bomb. Before the little spider could escape, one of the Goblins throws a jack o lantern explosive at her, causing the glass vial to exploded.

Miguel’s blood ran cold as he witnesses his love engulfed in black and purple smoke, and all reason went out the window as he rushed into the contaminated warehouse to save her.

“Miguel, wait!” Jessica screams out she drives her bike in front of the other two spidermen trying to rush in.

“What gives, Drew?” Hobie snaps, concern burning in his eyes. “We gotta get in there.”

“Not without these.” She snaps back as she hands the boys four sets of gas masks. “Lyla said it’s transmitted through air. Hurry up and put these on.”

Ben grumbles and slams the mask on before running in while Hobie and Jessica share a look. “You think Sunny will be alright?” The spiked spider asks as he places the gas mask on his already covered face.

“She better be.” Jessica sighs. “I definitely don’t want to find out how Miguel will react if she wasn’t.”

With that Hobie runs in while Jessica calls for backup to help contain the spores seeping from the windows.

“Vitals appear to be normal.” Spider-Doc mutters to the three spider people surrounding one of the hospital beds. “O’Hara and (L/N) are both looking good on blood pressure and brain activity, so I expect them to wake up anytime soon.”

Thankfully, Hobie and Ben managed to capture the green goblin trio and reinforcements came just in time to contain the spread of the bio weapon. However, both Miguel and his companion were found bloody and unconscious when they found them.

The beloved spider woman had most of the damage with several shards of glass impaled into her back and arm while gaining a severe concussion. The team figured that in the rush of the moment and his vision obscured by the cloud of dust, the goblins took Miguel by surprise and got him with three sharp projectiles while he was trying to help Sunny.

Despite the horrific scene, both of them were deemed to be alright after some surgery and the only physical damage was Sunny’s now broken arm, which should heal in about a week thanks to the signature spiderman super healing. The only worry was the psychological damage.

Both were definitively exposed to large quantities of the gas and from what Lyla had said about the mental effects of the spores, they were worried about an invisible spider and her beast of a companion tearing everything apart.

Jessica sighs as she sadly gazes at the broken and restrained bodies of her friends as Hobi places a small bear on his little friend’s bed.

“Didn’t Lyla say anything about how that antitoxin is coming along?” Peter says as he bites his nail.

Spider-Doc nods as his lens shifts to appear like he’s hopefully smiling. “Lyla has said thanks to the samples from their suits, an antitoxin will be finished in two days.”

“Two days?!” Hobie snaps up. “We are about to have two spidermen possibly going on a rampage if we piss them off. I don’t think we can wa-“

A soft groan emits from the bed beside the ranting anarchist and everyone’s attention breaks from the poor doctor and onto the small spider. Her eyes flutter open as she frowns at her surroundings.

“Sweetheart, are you okay?” Jessica soothes as she helps the disoriented girl sit up in her bed.

“I’m fine.” The girl said in an unusually blunt way. Her eyes now harden in an annoyed expression as she looks around at the group. “Next time, you guys should be more considerate to someone recovering from having their shit rocked.” She scolds before growling at the pain.

The sight of the sweet girl now acting so bothered towards their presence was so unsettling, but not unexpected. They were aware the sweet girl they knew was gonna be changed by the gas, but it’s still disturbing.

As they all stare at the glaring girl, a deep groan comes from the bed next to her as her attention focuses on her love. Her anger emerges as she snaps back to the spiders.

“What the fuck did y’all do to him?! Was it that asshole Ben Riley? I’m gonna kick his ass if he’s the reason my Miggy is in-“

“Cariño?” A soft mutter causes her verbal rampage to end as a pair of ruby eyes focused on her. Once she meets his eyes, an uncharacteristically soft grin comes over his face as he mumbles sweetly. “Hola, mi niña bonita, ¿cómo te sientes?””

“I’m fine.” The girl mumbles as she tries to keep her stern face while a little dusting of blush takes over. “What about you?”

Miguel chuckles at her face and gently reaches over and caresses her hand as he swoons, “Siento que puedo enfrentarme a un toro ahora que he visto tu hermoso rostro, mi amor.”

The group of spidermen looked at Miguel horrified as he looks up at them. Expecting him to snap at them or try and escape his restrains, but he doesn’t do either. He gives them a bright friendly smile as he cheers, “Oh, you guys made it out alright. I’m glad we are all still here together. Great job, everyone.”

Hobie backs up a couple of steps trying to calm his raging heart before he had a heart attack from the shock. Jessica looks at him disturbed as she silently records the duo on her phone to show her husband later. Peter calls Lyla on his gizmo as his face looses all color.

The AI emerges out of the gizmo with a cheery, “Hello~ you ringed?”

“What’s wrong with Miguel?” Peter snaps as he hears Sunny immediately yell at him about what he said about her Miggy.

“Oh I meant to warn you about that. Well the aggression is on a most case scenario kinda thing, not an every case thing. Since Miguel is more genetically altered with spider than Little Miss Sunshine, his natural aggression cancels out the one caused by the bio weapon.” The assistant explains.

Hobie laughs at this as he looks at the now confused Miguel, “So our big bad leader is as harmless as a kitten now?”

“Yep.” Lyla giggles. “And because our sunny pants there was as dangerous as a jumping spider before this, she’s now part of the majority percentaile.”

“What the fuck did you say about Migue, you twig?!” The formerly harmless girl bucks in her restraints as her protective nature causes her to want to thrash the punk star.

“Mi amor, por favor cálmate... No está tratando de ser grosero…” A now teary eyed Miguel tries to sooth his partner in a shaky calm voice.

That was when Jessica realized a mistake they made. When they restrained the pair earlier, Miguel was placed in titanium bands that crossed over his chest, arms, legs and hips. Since Sunny wasn’t considered a ‘major’ threat in comparison, she was just held down by some chains.

Because of this, the earth deafening sound of chains shattering cause all of the spiders to scream. The AI giggles as she responds,

“I forgot to mention that the chemical not only increases aggression, but also physical strength. In humans, they would just be slightly stronger than normal, but in Miss (Y/N)’s case…”

The rest couldn’t hear what else Lyla had to say as Hobie started booking it down the hall with a pissed off Sunny hot on his heels. Jessica frantically tries to undo Miguel’s restraints as he cries for his lover to come back.

Peter sighs and asks, “How much longer until the antidote is ready?”

“I can rush it for you. Should take another 3 hours hopefully.”

“Do you have any tranquilizers?” Peter asks as a now free Miguel tries to chase down his angry lover.

“No~”

i saw someone on twitter writing qsmp names in korean and im trying so hard not to be bothered i know they have good intentions but it was just so wrong in parts so instead here's how qsmp names would be written in korean BY THE SOUND not how they're written. note that i am not korean nor on the korean side of qsmptwt but as a casual kpoppie it's a rite of passage to learn hangul and try to learn korean at one point therefore though i am not a trusted source i do know the basics of the phonetics LUL

dantdm: 단티디엠 or 댄티디엠 (dan-ti-di-em, daen-ti-di-em) i've heard both pronunciations for the name dan, it's a matter of preference here! EDIT: also possibly 댼 instead which is also daen but like, not really? but also they're really similar? and i don't know how to hear the difference but there is one and nevermind don't worry about it man

I've been ia for a while because of how lowkey hostile this community has become lately, and I will probably continue to be so until there's a proper resolution, whatever it may be. However, I've seen some stuff that has been said by some of the ex qsmp admins in the midst of them recounting their experiences that I cannot help but be greatly bothered by, and, as a non english speaker, is important for me to say.

The way that they have been bashing quackity for making statements in spanish, his native language, and for streaming in the time zone he lives in, is not okay. I've said in another post about how disgusting I think these kind of comments are, and being an affected party in the admin situation does not make you an exception in my opinion.

The admins have every right to talk about what they went through, their feelings are valid and they absolutely deserve compensation for their work, because they were treated horribly, there's no doubt about that, but they are not immune to criticism, especially if it's about casual xenophobia. This does not stop at lèa's interview, as lumi also didn't have a spanish translation for her document, something that prior to the interview, I didn't think about too much, but now, I can't stop thinking about. Mind you, when it comes to xenophobia, there is absolutely no denying what the french and brazillian communties went through, but you do not fight xenophobia with xenophobia.

I completely understand that it's not easy to be the one to speak about any type of abuse they suffered, I said before that because of how shitty this situation is, that all sides would make mistakes and choices that people would not like, and for me this is one of them. As stressful as it must be for them, the ex admins have a lot of eyes on them right now, and saying these kind of things have consequences; I have seen way too much xenophobia towards the hispanic community and it's actively horrible to see because, unlike other times, the other communities are seemingly ignoring it. A twitter post saying that you do not condone harrasment does not erase what you publicly said previously.

I'm gonna be honest there's more that I did not like about that interview, the way that lèa talked about the admins that are still on the team, her response to the fact that she leaks stuff... I just... didn't like it, but I wanted to talk about the whole "quackity spoke spanish" thing because it's something that I feel really strongly about. It is NOT easy to make any statements in a language that you do not natevely speak, let alone very important ones, no matter how good you are at it, to write all of this it took me two hours and I probably still made mistakes or misspoke somewhere.

I do not how to end this post, I'm just frustrated that this fandom now goes at each other throats at littlest things without question or critical thinking and that xenophobia is now so normalized. I just... expected better I guess

So when it comes to distance in a fictional setting, is metric king? I wrote some fantasy post-apoc recently where the protagonist measured it in Oranges and Aevums (the latter being their own name), but more generally speaking is it worth it to hash out bespoke measurement systems for fictional cultures, do you think?

Oranges as a measurement unit sounds so funny, and a measurement based in... yourself makes surprising sense, given all the measurements based on body parts. Why not YOURSELF?

Well, I would think in a real post-apoc world metric would be king indeed, scientific and technologic instruments are in metric even in the US and you could always get a ruler from a school or scales from a grocery store, so eventually you could get back on track to reforming the metric system. It would be interesting, though, if every society during isolation had slightly different measurements for the same units because of faulty equipment (say, ohms or amperes or even grays) and they had to make a congress to clear things up.

Returning to your main question. My perspective here is the same as conlangs. It's very, very fun to have them, but it's not fun to force your audience to read them. When I write something set in a fantasy or science fiction setting, in my head I'm assuming the characters are speaking different languages and I DO explain them and even give examples of them, but the story itself is written, for both the reader's and the writer convenience, in a language we can understand (Spanish in my case, and then it can be translated). Same with units of measurement. I seldom use direct units of measurement like writing "the ship was 110.3 meters long" (in science fiction, it's often a trap as they force you to stay true to them), when more descriptive language can be used...

In any case, you could do, for the kind of immersion I love, say something like "she was 14 oranges* tall, rather small for her age" and do an asterisk like "*A.N. : 1.39 meters tall". This is very fun when used sparingly, because it gives the worldbuilding obessed reader something to play with, you can do the conversion yourself and learn more about the world, without interrupting the story. Some understandably dislike this approach, but I think that if you know what you're doing, you can hide some pretty deep lore behind it. In one of my favorite retro games, The Ur-Quan Masters, there is an alien race called the Slylandro who live in a gas giant. When they tell you their ancient history, they use their own system of measurment based on the rotation of their planet with its own names like Dranhasa and Dranh. The game actually provides you with the rotation time on "Earth" time, so some dedicated fans did the conversion, and found out the dates fit with major events in the game's past. I thought that was an awesome bit.

But I digress again. Does this mean you should not talk about measurements in your story? No, it can do for very fun plots and digressions, as well as make things more realistic and beliveable. A fantasy world sharing all the same measurement units can be as unplausible as everybody speaking "Common". Let's remember that the current metric system is a modern invention which took a long time to be adopted (and some, well one, country, still resists it). Just take a look at the many, many historical systems of measurement:

This was especially prominent in places like the Holy Roman Empire, where every statelet, county, principality, free city, prince-bishopric, duchy, archduchy, etc. may and most often did have different measurements from each other. Just take a look at how measurements varied from each German region, it's crazy. The systems of weight where particularily important. Before the introduction of standarized coinage, coins also varied not only between kingdoms, but between regions, and even towns, and coins made at different times with different alloys had different values. Rather than money in our modern sense, you could think of them as some kind of 'asset' that could vary in value depending on the circumstances. What's more, those values had to be checked by people who knew what they were working with. Silver and gold content could be weighed, ah, but you need good scales and weights, and someone who knows how to work them! And these people could easily rip you off, or you could lose value accidentally if those scales weren't done just right or fiddled with on purpose. In fact, this is where the word 'Mark' comes from.

It wasn't as easy to take say a 100 something bill and get the change in 1 something coins. There is a very interesting subplot in the anime Spice and Wolf where Lawrence, the trader character, has been paid in gold coins, and he has to trade them into lesser denominations. However, he has to be REAL careful so that nobody scams him given all I told you above. Even getting 'gold' coins was a gamble before modern coinage and banking (another long topic). How much of that is REALLY gold and not an alloy with silver or other metal? Who can you trust to tell you how much your coins are worth? Are they compatible between borders or even time, is this version worth as much as the others? Things that characters in fantasy who have just plundered a dragon's hoard almost never think about. Except in Spice and Wolf.

This all of course, as again you can see in Spice and Wolf, can make trade very tedious and even unstable. This was one of the reasons why the metric system was so quickly adopted in Europe and then elsewhere; consistent units just allow for easier trade. Lots of other things involving measurement can have a major impact on your story. For one, you NEED consistent and accurate measurement to create even the most basic industrial and scientific equipment. You can wing it for a time like alchemists (and even they knew their measurements) but eventually, you need to measure things to understand them. To have working steam engines, steel production, chemical industries and more, you need to know your temperature is. If you want to do electricity, you need measurements for current, resistance and charge. If you're doing engineering, you need to have lenght, weight and volume very, very clear, or people will die. They don't necessarily need to be universal like the metric system (though it has lots of advantages, being coherent between units and decimal so it doesn't jump between different denominations) but they need to be standarized and measurable.

Most of the above, unless you're writing some kind of encyclopedia about a fictional scientific revolution (BASED BASED BASED) will not affect your characters directly. But IT IS worth keeping in mind for what kind of world your characters are living in. The standarization of measurement units always means SOMETHING in the state of your society, the strenght of the state and centralized authority, the state of scientific understanding (one could say that trying to measure the world was perhaps THE scientific revolution, "Man as a measure of all things"), the capability for industry and the standarization of coinage and trade.

Even if you don't have your characters interact directly with those things, they will interact with them. It's also, like I've said in the examples, fun to imagine characters having to learn or deal with different units of measurement, just as it is fun to imagine them learning new languages or cultural quirks. It's something I've done in the past, in my space opera setting, the worlds descended from the United States STILL use the imperial system, much to the frustration of the rest of the metric human sphere. There is also an alien character who has a hard time to learn human measurements, and that makes her melancholic about her past, as they can't intuitively see the now-extinct measurements she does. Again, man as a measure of all things... this does include other thinking beings...

There's more I could talk about here regarding time, but I did a post about that, though I'm not satisfied with it and will probably redo it in some time at the future. In any case, there's lot to talk about why every calendar in science fiction has 365 days and 24 hours.

i feel like i'm pretty okay at tackling complex emotions? i've also gotten comments on my imagery, voice, and characterizations.

for tsc: Trying. i have found myself sitting at the top of my stairs ready to leave just rereading the first like 5k of this fic way too often. (it's also horribly the longest piece of writing i think i've ever finished. so it holds a special piece of proof to myself in it.. even if its only like 8k)

for pjo: Here Without You. there's an entire fraction of my soul tied up in this fic i swear. i'm never not thinking about it. it's been incredibly cathartic for me to write, both for myself and the characters (incl. calypso who i was not expecting to learn to appreciate/understand as much as i have)

"So, are we just going to ignore the tension between the two of you?" meanwhile, on the opposite side of Paris, PSG's first team sat in Marco Verratti's apartment as planned the previous day. They would hang out before heading to the concert. But as the boys indulged in the rare day off and looked forward to their activities later that night, some players couldn't help but bring up the noticeable tension between Kylian and the Singer/Guitarist of their favourite band.

"Thank god I thought I was the only one." Sergio Ramos said, happy that Pembélé had brought this up. As all eyes were now on Mbappe, he wished for the ground to swallow him whole. He quickly tried to dismiss the topic; he suggested they play FIFA in a last-ditch attempt to distract his teammates from the obvious suspense between the former lovers. It didn't work. But at least he tried.

Looking to his friends for support, Hakimi spoke up. "Brother, just tell them." before looking towards Neymar and Messi for a second and third opinion, he let out a deep sigh in response to their nods. "I guess it all started…" within the next 15 minutes, the number seven told them everything - well, almost everything as the group were left dumbfounded and confused about how Kylian had managed to keep it low profile with a person of Y/N stature.

"So, wait, the rumours are true?" Marquinhos asked in disbelief, and wide eyes, another nod from the young star, left the team perplexed again. "Santo Cielo!" Ramos cursed in Spanish as he took another swing of his drink. While his teammates were baffled by this new information, Kylian hung his head in shame. Noticing his friend's dishearted spirit, Hakimi told the boys to quiet down not to make him feel any worse.

As the racket finally died, the squad tried to comfort the young player. But that had little effect on the boy's broken heart, but he appreciated the kind remarks. As a pregnant silence developed in the following moments, the boys all looked at each other. "Why don't you get back together? I mean, the two of you are clearly in love." Verratti said in an appeal as. They weren't over each other. "We didn't end on the best of terms."

His answer was enough for his teammates to imagine the multiple scenarios that could have gone down between the two. "I was the one who called off the relationship" the striker's statement confounded his fellow players more - why would he break up with someone he was blindly in love with? "I was stupid." the declaration was followed by faux coughs from Neymar. "Yah think?" he muttered, loud enough for everyone to hear.

"Wait, you knew about this?" Ramos said wide-eyed as he looked between his two teammates. "Hakimi and Messi, too, but trust me, we found our by accident, parceiro", Neymar confessed. "But on a real note Ky, the two of you gotta patch things up" the Brazilian player was right, as much as he hated to admit it. "She's not going to forgive me, Neymar. Trust me. I know," the French player said in defeat, much to his friend's annoyance. "Have you talked to her?" Messi asked, wondering where he got that stupid idea from.

Nerves were running high, not just because it was the last show of their tour. But because a lot was going on. They had been teasing the highly anticipated Bloody Valentines x Maneskin collaboration since the two bands met after Maneskin won the Euro vision song concert. But there was also drama behind the sense. The fact that two people Y/N wished were on the other side of the world rather would be in touching distance of her. Kylian and Earling.

Kylian, for obvious reasons, was her ex, so for blatant reasons, she wanted him at a ten-hundred-meter distance. But since that was impossible, she would have to power through and act unbothered. But what made this situation ten times more uncomfortable was the fact that her latest hook-up was there. Now don't get her wrong, she had nothing against the Norwegian. But it was slightly awkward that she unintentionally hooked up with her ex's rival. Now, usually, she wouldn't care. But the two were going to be in the same room. And the last thing Y/N wanted was for this to turn into a shit show.

As the two groups sat backstage, tuning their instruments - mentally preparing for the performance that awaited them. They stood behind the thin fabric separating them from the screaming fans who had decided to entertain themselves by singing Queen songs. But Y/N was nervous. Not because of the crowd, she had been stressing all morning, and it showed. "Baby, sit down your pacing is giving me a headache." Victoria, Maneskin's bassist, groaned as she rubbed her temples. Patting the seat beside her, Y/N plopped herself down next to Victoria.

"Why are you worried, la mia futura moglie" The Italian woman asked, looking at her friend concerned. "This isn't about who you were with last night, Y/N - is it?" Sabrina's question made her go quiet. Dame, her girl, was good.

"Wait, wait aspetta un secondo. Who did you spend the night with, mi cara? That wasn't me." The guitarist from Maneskin, Thomas Raggi interveined. The two guitarists had a curious relationship.

They had hooked up multiple times, but there was no feeling there. They were friends before causal sex partners and after the duo bonded over heartache. They vowed to comfort each other emotionally and physically until either was in a relationship, and they have stayed true to that promise till the present day. "Someone", the Bloody Valentine's singer's response naturally intrigued the Italians. They were very open about their hook-ups and one-night stands, so what could be wrong with this one?

"Darling, I doubt it's that bad", Damiano, the lead singer of Maneskin, said, still invested in what his friend had to say but highly doubting it was that bad. "I slept with my ex's rival" The sound of glass breaking made them all look toward Onyx, who was white as a ghost. "You slept with Erling-!?" Before the drummer could finish his sentence, a hand over his mouth (courtesy of Axel) shut him up as the group all looked at him pointedly. Quieting down the drummer, they turned their attention back to the singer.

"Okay, how did that happen?" Axel asked, unsure if he wanted to know how she got with the Norwegian star. "I mean, if you were doing it out of spite, fair play, but if not, why?" The male vocalist asked his bandmate as they eagerly waited for a reply. "I just wanna know how you two met" Onyx was a whore for Halland, and it wasn't surprising that he cut Y/N off from answering so he could ask about Halland. "We met in the bathroom…After the match."

The puzzle pieces were starting to fit together as her bandmates looked shocked, and maneskin just looked confused. "Am I the only one who's lost?" Ethan, the luscious locked drummer of the Italian band, said, "We didn't do anything, we talked and exchanged numbers, and he did a favour for me, so I returned it" when she attempted to explain the situation, it only made it sound worse. "So you slept with him out of a favour," Axel said. Now angry that Halland may have coerced his friend into something.

"No! He was helping me with Onyx's Christmas present - he was getting me a signed jersey, and I got him and his team concert tickets in return. He didn't coerce me into anything, and we slept together after my argument with you. Everything that happened was consensual." Quickly correcting the wording of her previous statement, she was met with less angry faces as her mutuals let out a sigh of relief that nothing had happened to their friend. "And I'm worried because He and Kylian will be in the same section." Ah, that was a reasonably significant problem, but there was no time to discuss solutions as it was time for the show to begin.

Angelic. That was one way to describe how Y/N was playing. She poured her heart and soul into her performance as the colourful light and pyrotechnics lit up the stage painting her skin in shades of pastel red, making her look ethereal yet dangerous. The air felt full of static as the final pluck of strings echoed around the arena before the boisterous applause roared loud enough for the entirety of Paris to hear. Safe to say, both teams were in awe of the band - and they were only four minutes into the set. It was almost enough to distract from the unmistakable tension between the two teams, all seated in the private VIP section. They were the only ones there, which was good because if a fight broke out, there would be no one else to witness it.

As the applause dipped slightly, Y/N finally spoke. "Paris, are you ready!" the screams of excitement made her smile. "Good to hear. We got a lot of surprises for you tonight. So remember, have fun and…" Axel continued the small introduction before allowing the fans to finish the iconic intro. "And fuck it up!" the crowd roared back, transitioning into the first song. As the lights and pyro changed accordingly to the music. Played in perfect harmony, the audience sang the lyrics word for word as the four performers sang with them.

Safe to say that Kylian was also singing the words. How couldn't he? Her songs were ingrained in his head like a tattoo, as players from both teams took videos/pictures and sang/danced to the music. Everything was going great until Halland happened. It was no great surprise to anyone that the two were sizing each other up, but what Mbappe didn't expect was to see out of the corner of his eye a picture of him and Y/N set as his wallpaper. He tried to rationalise the situation. Maybe it was from a while ago. Perhaps he edited it, but his heart still hurt no matter how he put it.

As he tried to ignore the claws of doubt scraping against his heart, were the two of you together? She wouldn't do that, Would she? Date someone who had made it his mission to put himself above him in every aspect. Surely she didn't hate him that much that she felt the need to spite him in a way that left such a brutal scar - on his ego and heart.

Still in shock, it took all the strength not to beat the bastard up. His sadness and confusion were now souring into rage and hatred while not being sure who it was focused towards, Halland or Y/N. Maybe both, but mainly Halland, as he didn't want to believe that the girl of his dreams could do something so heartless. He was self-aware enough to acknowledge that he deserved to feel like shit for what he did to her - but this was too far.

As the climax to the current song began, he unintentionally focused on the lyrics. "You were my everything, and all you did was make me fucking sad cuz second chance romance doesn't leave enough time for one last dance." It was second chance romance - his song. As he watched her from afar, he felt his heartbeat like a drum. Glancing between Y/N and Erling, he realised something, on stage, the two of them were nothing to her. All that mattered was her and the music. Just like in his current situation, all that mattered was having Y/N back in his arms, so God help him. This was one prize that he would not allow Halland to have. Ever. Take the trophies in football, but the singer's heart was his and his alone, and he would prove it to everyone tonight.

The after-party was in full swing at the french nightclub 'tigre blanc.', as the smell of sex, drugs, and alcohol lay thick as the mob people celebrated on the first floor. The upstairs floor was reserved for the celebrities and other elite to enjoy the after-party without worrying about being swamped with fans. But unfortunately, Maneskin couldn't make it as they needed to fly back to the US. As the PSG squad sat in a booth enjoying the expensive alcohol, they all watched in concern as their teammate looked like he was about to break his glass.

Kylian felt like decapitating halland as he watched from afar, throwing himself all over Y/N. He was not enjoying himself as he revelled in jealousy and seemingly ingested more alcohol than humanly possible. Safe to say, this was a recipe for disaster. Wanting to do nothing more than walk up to them and break Halland's fucking face in, but he didn't. Knowing full well, the singer would hate him even more.

As another hour flew by, it was clear to his teammates that Kylian was drunk on equal parts jealousy and alcohol. So finally having enough of Mbappe's sour demeanour, they put their plan into motion. "Who up for a game of never have I ever?" Neymar yelled loudly, receiving scattered applause as everyone quickly formed a circle. "Hey, love birds, get over here!"

Onyx yelled to his bandmate and the Norwegian star as he watched the two stumble over (clearly drunk), taking a seat next to each other - truthfully, if they had sat any closer, the girl would have been in the blond's lap. With one arm secured around her waist, her head resting on his shoulder, and their hands intertwined, safe to say that Hallnad was complacent. As the circle consisted of PSG, man city and band associates, safe to say everyone could feel the tension brewing.

"Okay, let's begin. If any of you are unfamiliar with the game, take a shot. If you have done what the question is asking, I'll go first. Never have I ever kissed a friend's sibling," Neymar said, starting the game quickly to defuse the escalating situation. As multiple people began downing their shots, Sabrina looked towards her bandmates. "Ya'll better not fucking take a shot cuz if I find out any of yall have kissed my brother, I'm gonna kill you." the bassist said as she took her shot.

"Wait, who?" Axel said in surprise. "Jackson Mays, older brother." the mention of the asshole from high school made Y/N gag in disguise. "Didn't he get arrested for selling drugs or something?" the rest of the group watched a mixture of amusement and shock at the interesting people that the four knew.

"Oo, I have a good one. Never have I ever sent a dirty text to the wrong person." Phil Foden spoke, taking his shot a second later. "Was meant for the Mrs, went to jack instead, which made everyone laugh at the stupid confession. "At least now I know he's not lying about how big he is." The group of drunk people found that report very amusing as Foden turned a bright shade of red. But what caught people off guard was when Y/N tipped her shot into her mouth, hoping no one would notice.

"Who was it?" Neymar asked, knowing full well the answer, "An old flame" was all she could muster as her grip on Hallands hand tightened, and a sickening feeling swelled in her stomach. Truthfully the answer was Kylian. He knew it was Kylian - heck. It was how they met each other in the first place. Sabrina got a new number, and they joked about sending each other dirty/flirty text, but Y/N's messages when to the wrong number, which happened to be a famous footballer. An awkward conversation between a musician and a baller turned into a whirlwind romance.

As the tension builds again, Y/N tries to deflect from the obvious by continuing the game, "Okay, never have I ever faked an orgasm?" As all of the women in the circle (Y/N included) down their shot, the men look at them in horror. "Are men really that bad?" Ramos asked in shock at the revelation that most men are dreadful at making their partners orgasm. "You have no idea," Sabrina said, shooting a little look towards Kylian as if to say something without opening her mouth.

Now she knew that Kylian always made his partners cum. How did she know this? Y/N told her she knew he was good sexually, but that wasn't why she commented. It wasn't to bruise his ego but to see if he was genuine about her friend. Sabrina knew that Mbappe wanted the singer back. Heck, a blind man could tell you that. But she wanted to see how far he was willing to go because he would have to walk a mile over fucking glass after the shit he pulled.

"Never have I ever dumped someone over text." Halland's contribution to the game made Y/N look up to him, see she confided in him and told him a couple of things that she probably shouldn't have, but she never said to him that - educated guess, maybe. Y/N knew she should stop, but right now, being sober would only make things worse. At least if she were drunk, she would have some reason to excuse her behaviour. One gulp and the shot was gone, "No way, how could someone break up with you over text" Kevin De Brunier asked in shock.

"A fucking idiot", Halland responded for her as she felt herself growing more upset by the minute. The remainder of the way that she had her heart broken. Over a fucking text message. Many months of love and vigour, countless hours spilling her darkest secrets, lust and passion mixed with sweet nothings meant nothing more than a single line of text to him. 'We aren't going to work. I'm sorry, but we need to break up.' In his words, not her's.

And she just accepted it. She didn't resist or fight for the love that she cared for so dearly. Instead, she mourned the loss of someone she thought would be her forever. She coped in the only way she knew how. Drinking, partying and smoking as she fell into a deep depression. As she hardly slept or ate anything, it took Y/N a long time to finally feel like herself again. But now she was back at square one.

But the singer wasn't the only one going through the motions as Kylian felt the rage of a thousand suns burn inside him, and in a moment of heated outrage, he said something he would regret. "Never have I ever wanted to get back with my ex." as tension reached new heights, "I'm gonna go smoke." with that, Y/N walked away from the situation, unable to face him. As she tried to hold back her tears, she walked up the stairs that led to the club's roof. She was utterly unaware of her surroundings. As the night's cold air welcomed her, she walked towards the roof's edge.

She sat with her leg dangling over the edge as she lit a cigarette. Letting out a deep sigh as the rush of s nicotine hit, "You know those things are gonna kill you." Halland joined the girl on edge as Y/N took another deep puff before exhaling in euphoria. "It's a form of coping. I'm just so stressed," the singer finally spoke, her eyes full of tears. "You know it's okay to cry", and with those words, Y/N began to cry so violently that her whole body began to shake. As Erling placed her head into the nook of his shoulder, he let the girl of his affection release her pent-up emotions.

After her heavy tears reduced to sniffles and sobs, the football player asked her a question that made her want to cry again. "You are still in love with him, aren't you" with that, more tears streamed down her face as she cried her heart out. she had ruined her make-up. "I do, and I fucking hate it. Why can't I stop? Please make it stop." the girl's voice cracked mid-sentence making her sound even more pitiful than she already did. The Norwegian hugged the girl as tightly as he could. He placed a kiss on the top of her head.

As much as Halland wanted Y/N for himself, he couldn't take advantage of her. He had already done it once. When they hooked up, it was clear that it only happened because they were intoxicated and emotional. But that didn't mean that he didn't love her, no. He would give anything to see her happy. That is why he was going to let her run back to Mbappe. Even if it hurt his pride, he was happy as long as he made her happy. But if he messed up again, he would treat the singer like the queen she was.

As they stayed in each other's embrace, they were unaware of the third party watching from the door. Clearing his throat, Kylian made his presence known. As Y/N went frigid with fear, she looked towards Halland for help, but all he did was nod slightly as if to say, 'talk to him. Please, for all our sakes', to which she agreed. "If you need me, I'll be with the others, okay."

And with that, the Norwegian left, but not before he and his rival had a short stare-down. The PSG player slowly walked towards his ex-lover as if she was a scared animal, worried she would run off at a moment's notice. They fell into a heavy silence as he kept his distance beside her. "What happened to us, mon amore?" the player asked, looking at the girl. "We ended, Kylian, that's what happened. You ripped my heart in two, and you left." the bitter tone was enough to tell mbappe how she felt about the split.

"That was a mistake, ange de mon coeur" God, she missed the sound of him speaking french, but Y/N refused to cave in - she couldn't. Getting up, she began to walk towards the door. This conversation was over. Kylian walked behind her, quickly grabbing her wrist and gently making her stop dead in her tracks. "Let go of me, please", refusing to look in his direction. Her heart begged her to embrace him. But if she did, there was a chance that this would end in disaster. She would be left like a broken china doll again, leaving her to put herself together again. It was not going to happen.

"Let's talk about this, please" Kylian sounded just as desperate, if not more, as he refused to let go of her hand as he intertwined their fingers. "No, Kylian, we shouldn't talk about it." in a fable attempt to deny him any comfort, she removed her hand from his. "Why not" now he was on the brink of crying, "bébé, please look at me." he knew how to tug on her heartstrings as she turned to look into his deep eyes. She said, inches apart and breath fanning each other's faces.

"Kylian, don't" as this point, she didn't know what she was saying no to, but frankly, she didn't care. "Don't call me that" it sounded like more of a plea than a demand. "But you love it when I speak french." he knew what he was doing, and in his defence, it was working. "that is exactly the problem, Kylian. We can't keep doing this" Y/N was frustrated and angry, and the alcohol was not helping. "Doing what?" now playing oblivious, they looked into eyes of each other, both telling two different stories.

"We aren't good for each other" the whisper did not sound very convincing. "Did Halland tell you that?" the question was a mixture of anger and dread. What could the Norwegian have said to her before his arrival? "No" a slight sight of relief didn't mean he was out of the woods yet. "Then why" his voice was small and breathy, as if he was unsure if he wanted to know the answer.

"You hurt me, Kylian. I thought you were my one, and you destroyed me." The silence was deafening as they stood face to face for the first time in a year. "I told you things I had never told anyone. I let you into my world. I showed you my dreams and fears, and you disregarded them. I put my heart in your hand, and you threw it away like it was nothing, Ky it hurt. Did I not even deserve to be broken up face to face? Did I mean that little to you?" As he stood there and listened, he felt his throat dry as his words got stuck.

"No, ma reine", he protested. How could Y/N say that? she meant everything to him - did she not know that? "Then why did you hurt me?" tears again fell from her eyes for the nth time. "I don't know" the singer appreciated his honesty, but it still hurt. "But it was the biggest regret I have ever had."

"That doesn't fix things. Kylian"

"I know"

As the two stood closer than ever, they felt the tension hit the stratosphere. "But it's a start." with that, two sets of lips collided in a feverish kiss, tongue and teeth, swirl and bite. Hands all over each other as they momentarily forgot their problems. Breaking apart with heavy breathing and noses still touching, "If we do this promise me one thing", Y/N said, short of breath, "Anything, ma princess." giving him a small peck on the lips before speaking ", please don't leave me again."

Flag podcasts reviews

How do you do, fellow flag nerds?

Over on my twitter I've been writing over the seasons a thread of reviews of the many vexillological podcasts to be found on Spotify at least, as that's where I listen to podcasts. And I think that i might as well port it over here so those lucky people without Twitter may read it and enjoy those podcasts too.

As you probably figured out, reviewing a whole-ass podcast in less than 280 characters can be a bit tricky and limiting, but I would say that they are pretty decent nonetheless. I'll expand on any I am not sure about, and be sure to send me some you've found yourself, and I guess that I'll be amending this post if that's the case. Also, the reviews were originally in Spanish, so I'll try my best to translate them as faithfully as possible. Without further ado, let's begin.

Episodes 140, 446 and 447 of 99% Invisible

Very well produced and informative. They share very interesting and not very well known stories relating to flags. I just with there was more of them! The Roman Mars city flags TED talk is a good companion to this podcast.

2. Vexed Flag Podcast

A entertaining and informative podcast in which two friends talk and discuss the history and meaning of the flag the episode is about. I like the flag selection and the fact that they have a complementary instagram. Well produced.

3. The Vexillocast

Another podcast in which two friends talk about flags. This one has a few monologues that serve as a sort of introduction to vexillology. The discussions are interesting, but it's a bit too informal and amateur for my taste. Also they're very lefty which was very funny to me.

4. Vexillum

In contrast to the other ones reviewed here, this one only has one caster. It is very short and only covers the principles of vexillology and vexillography. Also not as formal as the other ones, and weird things happen to the music and voice sometimes.

5. Why the flag?

Another podcast in which flags are monologued about. This one is centred around telling the story of a different flag every episode. Very well produced and even tells things I didn't know about. The definition of a vexillological podcast.

6. A Kiwi, 2 Brits, & A Yank - Talk Flags

The natural extension of the Instagram account of the creators. The episodes are a bit too long but entertaining until the end. I'd say it's a podcast for the vexillonaire (someone passionate about flags), but not the vexillologist. We'll have to see where it goes.

7. Banderista

It tells very interesting things that even I didn't know, and it is the only podcast in Spanish, which makes it even better. The only thing I disliked was that I felt like it was all improvised, and the music constantly sounding in the background can be annoying.

8. Flag Theory

The perfect example of "short & sweet". Episodes less than 20 minutes long, in which the flag is evaluated and it's meaning explained. In the last episodes the people interviewed are really interesting.

9. Flagged For Content

I don't know how they do it, but the podcast just keeps getting better. Every guest is interesting and special in their own way, and the flag selection and following discussions are also great. Must listen.

10. Flagged (English version)

Very similar to Flag Theory, it describes the flag, it's meaning, and the changes that it has undergone. There isn't enough content in my opinion. I wish there were more episodes, they're all pretty short, under 10 minutes always. You aren't loosing anything by listening to it.

11. Passion Project Podcast

Nothing special. It is a short podcast composed of short episodes that talk over the basics of vexillology. Unfortunately it has several editing mistakes, such as the audio repeating and such.

12. Unfurled: The story of our flags

SURPRISINGLY good. Well produced, the music, the narrator, and the script are surprisingly good, it also talks about unusual things of vexillology. I just wish there were more episodes.

Amateur. They're superficial with the meaning of the flags and except some cases it's nothing serious. It is clear that they were school projects. Don't recommend.

14. Episode "Vexillology" of Timeless with Julie Hartman

Surprisingly good. Explores the basics of vexillology and it's based on and goes into detail of the contents of the book "Worth dying for" by Tim Marshall. Not too deep and well produced. BUT, I do want to warn you, this programme in general is financed by the Pragers, and the rest of the podcast is very clearly neoconservative and conspiratorial propaganda.

15. Interview with Silvio Fernández in Pausa café podcast

Doesn't deliver on it's promises. It has nothing to do with vexillology but rather the symbols of two cities: the place where the interviewer and interviewee are from, and a Italian city were a congress was taking place. The audio quality is also dreadful. Not worth it. It is also in Spanish, if that's relevant for you.

16. Episode "Vexillology with E. Tory Laitila" of the Ologies podcast

Fantastic. Entertaining from beginning to end, it covers frequent questions and facets of vexillology, while also some obscure ones. My only complain is that the host was just constantly surprised and that was a bit annoying. Recommend a lot.

17. Episodes 69 (nice), 70 and 71 from the Hágase el mae podcast

It's interesting seeing two people go into the world of vexillology almost from 0. It's not very deep, it boils down to them reviewing flags, but if you have the time, it's fine. Also, it's in Spanish, AND for Spanish speakers this may be a bit hard to listen too (it certainly was for me) because of the costarican accent they've got.

18. "Vexilología: La ciencia de las banderas", in the Ciencia del fin del mundo podcast

Imagine you put a flag nerd in front of a micro, well, the result is this podcast. And also the flag nerd in question is the boss of the two hosts. Very funny.

MOONLIGHT CHICKEN – FUN WITH THE NAMES

Not meaning to take away from all the big emotions in Moonlight Chicken, but they were really having fun with the names weren't they? 😊

JimBeam caused the biggest hangover for our dear protagonist uncle. And their furkid came about because, well, Jim + Beam = Jimbo.

Also, going back in time, can you imagine little siblings Jim and Jam running around their family farm? How cute are those names for a pair of little rascals! 😂

When I first started writing this post, it was because I thought the wordplay in the examples above was a bit of fun. But remembering how Pat and Pran's names in Bad Buddy were also able to represent deeper layers of meaning (write-up linked here) I took a closer look at some of the other names in Moonlight Chicken.

Here's what I've found – some of it's fun, some of it's heavier, and some are probably just the product of my fevered, moonlight-induced delirium, so be warned! 😉

First up is this guy, Wen's good friend Gong–

The Thai spelling of Gong's name (ก้อง) can be seen on Wen's mobile at Ep.5 [1I4] 16.16, and it translates to resonant. And the idea of a resounding gong (the percussion instrument, that in East and Southeast Asia was also used to signal announcements as well as in music) does fit rather well with Gong's depiction in the show. He's shown to us as kind of an unfiltered loudmouth, and this is established early on when his indiscreet nail-and-bail advice to Wen in the gym locker room was broadcast to everyone else there. 😂

This pun also works across many languages, where the word gong (the instrument) exists in homologous versions – in English, Malay/Indonesian, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, Portuguese, German, Polish… but not in Chinese and only partially in Thai, ironically, where the word ฆ้อง (for the instrument) is pronounced more like khong. 🤷‍♂️ (Still similar though.)

There's also another possible pun that plays on the show's overlap with Chinese culture (remembering that Moonlight Chicken is heavily Thai-Chinese) – the Chinese dialect honorific Ah Gong (阿公/亞公) that many grandkids use to address their Chinese grandpa. (In Bad Buddy, you can hear Pat's mother use this term when talking to him about his grandfather, at Ep.10 [4/4] 11.14.) In Thai, this Chinese loanword is spelt differently from Gong's name (ก๋ง instead of ก้อง) and the tone is also different. However, the pronunciation of Gong's name is similar enough to Teochew (the predominant Chinese dialect group in Thailand) that I think the pun does work too.

Based on the above, in my head at least Gong the character is very much a caricature of a worldly-wise gramps, dispensing advice to the less-experienced Wen. He's even got the near-white hair to suit, and in the scene at Ep.5 [3I4] 3.36 he's also dressed in yellow, which in Thailand is often associated with a higher, wiser authority – a reference to the saffron robes of monks, and also to the current king and his father.

OK I'll shut up about Gong puns now – just as Moonlight Chicken's art direction told Gong the character to do later, via his wardrobe: 🤣

Now Li Ming's name is packed with many layers of meaning, and this makes him symbolic of one of the show's major themes (that of renewal and a fresh start in the future).

I've written about Li Ming's name in previous posts so I won't go into it again, but the posts with more info are linked here and here. (I'll probably write more about Li Ming's name in relation to the show as a whole later.)

I think of Heart's character as a metaphor for LGBTQ+ love – which may seem a little unusual, given that gay romances are at the core of the whole series.

However, I don't think LGBTQ+ love is really the central theme of Moonlight Chicken (and will post about this separately). Rather, the romances are there to help move the ship of themes along, without being the central message. But as in any Aof-driven show there will always be some sort of political statement in support of LGBTQ+ rights, and I think Heart was so named for this reason.

Heart is fully capable of love, a complete human being in that respect. Yet his parents saw him as deficient because of his deafness, withdrew themselves from him, and left him feeling quite unloved, lonely and sequestered – not so much out of shame perhaps, but more out of a misplaced desire to protect him I think (eyes on Bad Buddy's Dissaya here! 😡).

But Heart wasn't deficient as a human being, or any less than the people his parents were comparing him to – they isolated him simply because the language that most clearly communicated his innermost self was different from that of the majority, and they did not understand enough to cope with it. He wasn't voiceless – he simply spoke differently, using his hands (thus all the discourse around not using the word mute at Ep.5 [4/4] 8.04).

All Heart needed was understanding in order for his full, authentic self to flourish (which he got first from Li Ming, and is what the Jintanas finally gave to him when they took up sign language).

Do we need a stronger parallel for the experience of young queer people, whose hearts love differently from the cishet majority's, growing up in families that cannot or will not understand them? 💖

Saleng's name (ซาเล้ง) refers to three-wheeler vehicles (and saleng is an abbreviation of the full form รถเข็นซาเล้งสามล้อ). These are usually the pedal-powered tricycles used by rag-and-bone men (who load recyclable/saleable trash into the barrow sitting on two wheels at the front of their vehicle) or (sometimes) motorcycles that are equipped with sidecars (see this link here for some images). In an example of metonymy, the scrap-pickers who ride the salengs are also known as salengs themselves.

And this name is especially suited to Saleng the cheeky, rough-and-ready rascal in Moonlight Chicken – just like the man himself, the vehicle saleng is zippy, unbound by rules of the road and gainfully shoulders its burden, while scrap-picker salengs are used to constant hustle and hard work in their lives, ready to capitalize on any opportunity that they might happen to find.

One of the more important names in the series is the name of the diner, because it's the same as that of the show – พระจันทร์มันไก่ (visible on the lantern at the front), and it's pronounced something like phra jan man gai.

Phra jan means moon, where the phra part is a prefix used for revered persons, places or objects and the jan part is a word derived from Sanskrit that also means moon (and is a cognate with the Chandra/Chandran of many Indian/Sri Lankan names – e.g., சந்திரன் in Tamil – as well as candra in Balinese, Javanese and Indonesian, and cendera in Malay).

The man gai part is the same as that in khao man gai (ข้าวมันไก่), the Thai name for chicken rice. The literal translation for the name of this dish is chicken-fat rice, where man means oil/fat/grease, gai means chicken and khao means rice (adjectives or descriptors follow the noun in Thai). This name refers to the fact that the rice is given its deep savory flavor by sautéing it in chicken-fat (the famously flavorful schmaltz, for those familiar with Jewish-American cooking – see @waitmyturtles's encyclopedic post on khao man gai linked here if you'd like to delve into more culinary detail 👍).

You might think the most obvious translation of the diner's name would be the decidedly unglamorous Chicken-Fat Moon, but I don't think that's the only way it comes across in Thai. It was probably worded that way because it plays on the khao man gai served within, but the words do have other meanings too. The word man (มัน) in the diner's name can also mean joyful, enjoyable, flashing, shining, sparkling, glowing, bright, audacious or interesting. The words shining, glowing and bright are of course often associated with the moon, and in this light (pun unintended 😂) the translation Moonlight Chicken maybe isn't that far off (since phra jan man can also mean Shining/Glowing/Bright Moon).

But remembering that in the Thai language descriptors follow nouns, another possible reading of พระจันทร์มันไก่/phra jan man gai (at least to my non-Thai ears) is Glowing (or Joyful/Enjoyable/etc.) Moon of the Chicken (just as khao man gai is literally rice of the chicken-fat).

And if it's Glowing Moon of the Chicken, I think (bear with me on this) that the Chicken being referred to here is actually Jim (don't laugh). He's the main protagonist and the center of all the action in the series, so it wouldn't be surprising for him to be referenced in the title. (And I'm thinking of chicken in the sense of the living bird, not the food on a plate.)

Remembering that the full moon in Chinese tradition represents completeness in life, especially completeness of the family (referenced at the Mid-Autumn Festival of Ep.1, and written up here), we also see that Jim is haunted throughout the series by a home life that is incomplete (ever since he lost Beam), partly because he is still hanging on to the past. We are also told in the theme song that the moon represents the heart (see this write-up linked here) and I think Moonlight Chicken is very much about Jim's search to fill the hole in his, and render it complete again (despite his instincts to do the contrary).

So if Jim is the avian protagonist in the title (remembering that chicken is also a synonym for timorousness, even as we see Jim unwilling to take that bold step to remedying the emptiness in his life), he's very much domesticated fowl (and we're also shown how fastidiously he motherhens his brood – not just Li Ming and Saleng, but also the late-night dining crowd who come to him to be fed). Noting too that Jim was also from a distant rural farm also echoes this idea that he's very much a gai baan (ไก่บ้าน or domesticated fowl), not so much a gai aawn (ไก่อ่อน, literally tender chicken, slang for naïve greenhorn)…

Anyway Jim is not the only gai in the village (this isn't Llanddewi Brefi, Daffyd 😂). Of course, the other gai is Gaipa (ไก่ป่า).

Gaipa's name is quite unusual (even Director Aof's good friend and sometime GMMTV director Jojo Tichakorn has tweeted about how wild it was, if I remember correctly). Because of this, I think it's very much a deliberate choice. The meaning of Gaipa's name also reinforces the idea of Jim the moonlight chicken because it brings up a very interesting contrast.

The word gaipa (ไก่ป่า) actually refers to this handsome beast:

It's not quite correct to call this bird a chicken (which is domesticated fowl) – this picture is of Gallus gallus or the red junglefowl, the wild ancestor of all domesticated chickens, that still lives in forests throughout Southeast Asia (including Thailand) and parts of South Asia. Bold, resourceful and adaptable, it's also commonly seen in urban areas that neighbor its natural habitat (while still remaining very much an untamed bird).

In Gaipa's name, the gai part (ไก่, sometimes rendered phonetically as kai) does mean chicken in Thai, but the pa part (ป่า) means forest or wild. So Gaipa's name translates to something like forest fowl or wild chicken, that is the wild counterpart to domesticated chickens.

I suspect Gaipa's character may have been originally written as more flamboyant, and thus the image of the loud, colorfully bold (and sometimes squawky) red junglefowl would have been a better fit. Red junglefowl will also freely pursue and interbreed with domestic chickens (they are basically the same species, like wolves are to dogs; it's just that domestic chickens also have some genetic input from the closely-related grey, green and Sri Lankan junglefowl, and are more placid than their wild versions). With this in mind, Gaipa's romantic interest in Jim also makes sense (since Jim is the domesticated version of the wild gai).

Part of me wishes they had gone with a campier portrayal for Gaipa though – it might have been a chance to make up for the negative depiction of the screamy, predatory Green in 2gether. But at the same time it would have been a really delicate balance to get right (and flubbing it would ironically have become replication rather than reparation). So maybe Director Aof just didn't want to take the risk and opted for Khaotung's sweeter, more restrained rendering instead. 🤷‍♂️ I'm still a fan of what they've done nonetheless. 👍

OK, so on to Wen's name, and his is thought-provoking for the different questions and themes it evokes. The analysis of his name is so long that I've moved it away into its own post (linked here).

Keeping it simpler, Wen's name can be linked (via the wn that we see on his phone at Ep.5 [1I4] 16.20) to a political era in Thailand where opposing camps were known as the Red Shirts and the Yellow Shirts. The Red Shirts were identified with the country's lifeblood (its rural poor), and passionately championed the cause of the impoverished farmer. The Yellow Shirts were drawn from the urban elite (including intellectuals and royalists) and because of their origins among the intelligentsia can be seen as representing the message that passion should always be tempered with reason.

Not taking sides here, but very broadly I think that, based on the above, the colors yellow and red (including their various shaded incarnations like mustard/saffron for yellow and rust-brown for red) represent the different pulls of head versus heart, and we are shown both Jim and Wen struggling with knowing the right thing to do, and staying too long in the wrong situation because of emotional attachment (e.g., Jim with the diner, and Wen in his messy relationship with Alan). And we see Jim and Wen wearing more of each color at different stages of their journey, before they come to their final decisions allowing wisdom to prevail over their emotions. 💖 There's more detail in the write-up linked here if you want to read more (but it's a long post and a bit of a trudge to read, I must say 🤷‍♂️).
