Can you recommend any good bands that sing in Norwegian?
Hi Anon!
That depends on what kind of music you like. I usually hate (or dislike very much) when Norwegian is being sung. Because it is mostly Oslo-Norwegian. And most Norwegians actually don't speak close to that. One should learn Nynorsk instead.
There is ONE song that is sung in old Danish Norwegian/Oslo Norwegian that I do like but that is very slow and classical from a Norwegian musical called Peer Gynt.
Solveigs sang (Solveig's song) but only when it's sung by Solveig Kringlebotn. It is on Spotify but I couldn't find the one with this singer as an upload to sound here on Tumblr. Sorry!
With that written; there is a band that sing in and old dialect Norwegian/Nynorsk-ish.
They are very folk rock/folk metal and even use the violin (a very traditional instrument in Norwegian folk music).
I like some of their songs but that is probably because they don't sing Oslo Norwegian (the kind of Norwegian you learn everywhere but I think should not be learned unless you wanne live there).
Anyway; The band is called Gåte (Riddle) and has a female singer. You pronounce Gåte like Gawté (almost). Their most famous song is called Sjå Attende (Look back/look behind).
But that is not the one I wanne show you. I think this one is very mysterious and beautiful one of Gåte's newest songs, HULDRA (the name of a Scandinavian female mythological creature and a creature that will be featured in a Rammstein fanfic series I am working on) ANYWAY here;
youtube
Of course we also had a famous band called KAIZER'S Orchestra (but they don't play anymore and their songs were very silly and the lyrics made no sense even for a Norwegian. It was like taking words and creating sentences that made no sense! I never liked them but maybe you will?) Their most famous song was "OMPA TIL DU DØR" (Ompa music/ Ompa until you are dead)
So to sum it all up; Dear Anon
I don't like Norwegian music sung in today's "Oslo- Norwegian.". I only like Norwegian music that are sung in Old Norwegian or Nynorsk. You can check out these bands;
Gåte (you can also write Gaate and the band should still show up)
Edvard Grieg's (classical 1800's pianist and compositioner) Solveig's Sang/Song but only when it's sung by Solveig Kringlebotn or Sissel Kyrkjebø.
Kaizers Orchestra (even though I've never liked them, but perhaps you will).
Sorry for not being so into Norwegian bands singing in Norwegian. It's just that I can't stand the Oslo Norwegian. I think it sounds very flat and not melodious enough to be sung. That's why I actually prefer Swedish bands singing in Swedish! 😂👌
Tusen takk/ a thousand thanks
For the question anyway! 😘❤

Are there any actors or actresses from POTO who played in the Ken Hill Phantom?
Yes. The most famous would be John Owen-Jones, who quite recently starred in a production of it in Tokyo; he played the Phantom in both versions. Another would be Sarah Ryan; here’s audio of her in the show. Like JOJ, she played the same character (Christine) in both versions.
As for others, Solveig Kringlebotn played Christine in the Ken Hill version and then played Carlotta in the ALW version; both productions were in Norway. Peter Jorde played Raoul in the Ken Hill version and the Phantom in the ALW version, both in Denmark. And for something really different, Yngve Gasoy-Romdal played Raoul in both the Ken Hill version and Love Never Dies. And I’m sure there’s more...

Well... I've never been a fan of Carlotta’s voice issues being explained by a mouth spray rather than the Phantom’s ventriloquist talents. But it won't stop me from making a photoset on the theme!

Phantom of the Opera in Norway 2018-2019
The production was originally designed by Andrew Riley for a Romanian production in 2015. While the main set design was kept, the effects and especially chandelier was completely re-done. The costumes was also redesigned, or massively revamped. The producers published a nice photo series which included the proscenium in the shots. It gives a good impression of the overall set design. This is - with some modifications - the same production now touring the Middle East and Europe. The director is Stephen Barlow, and choreographer is Ewan Jones.
Cast depicted: Espen Grjotheim, Mira Ormala, Carl Lindquist, Solveig Kringlebotn, Arvid Larsen, Hans Marius Hoff Mittet, Jannike Kruse, Charlotte Brænna, Markus Bjørlykke and ensemble (2018).

I have this program packed away somewhere! I would've loved to have seen the actual production.
Photos from the Norwegian production of Ken Hill’s Phantom in 1990
Principal Christine was Solveig Kringlebotn (who would later star as Carlotta in the Norwegian premiere of the ALW version). The Phantom was Paul Åge Johannessen, and Raoul was Yngve Gåsøy (Det Norske Teatret, Oslo).

Carlotta’s Managers costume from ‘Phantom of the Opera’ in Norway 2018-2019 is currently on display at Folketeateret in Oslo. This in context of a musical theatre concert where original Oslo Carlotta - Solveig Kringlebotn - is one of the leads.

Today it’s the Constitution day in Norway, which made me look closer at Norwegians putting their stamp on POTO in different ways
Johanne Brochmann, Stockholm: OK, so she is Swedish, or half Norwegian if you will, with her father being Norwegian. She was possibly the first ALW!Christine of Norwegian descendant, which makes her a perfect candidate for this photoset.
Solveig Kringleboth, Oslo: Apart from being a kick-ass principal Carlotta in the non-replica Oslo production, on the former opera stage where she had previously sung many lead roles, she was also once Christine in the Norwegian Ken Hill production.
Charlotte Brænna, Oslo: Principal Meg Giry AND u/s Christine in Oslo, and also the one who had the honour of doing the very last Christine performance in Oslo.
Sindre Postholm, Stockholm: Replaced the originally-cast principal André in the Stockholm revival without a word. Owned the role. And also featuring the most dreamy blue eyes an André ever had.
Maria Bjørnson: OK, so another of mixed nationalities. Norwegian (and estranged) father, Romanian mother, born in Paris, lived in London for most of her life. She expressed that she felt like neither nationalities. Still, as a great granddaughter of the man behind the Norwegian national anthem, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, she must be included in this list.
Tuva Semmingsen, Copenhagen: She was a shared principal Madame Giry in the Copenhagen revival, but I never got to catch her in the role. Few photos also emerged. Principal, yet not it felt like. Anyhow...
Astrid Giske, Oslo: The super trouper u/s Christine who became a secret principal one week into the production, and was officially announced so a month later. Outstanding Christine, voice, dancing, acting, understanding the role. Yes.
Arvid Larsen, Oslo: The only principal Norwegian going from the Oslo production and to Greece to repeat the role. Which is curious and cool. But he was fab as Monsieur André.
Stephen Brandt Hansen, Tartu/Tallin: The (so far) only Norwegian principal Phantom abroad, premiering the Estonian production and also singing in Estonian. Hats off.
Espen Grjotheim, Oslo: The (so far) only principal Phantom in Norway in a legitime production, and with some impressive vocals. If also counting illegitime, we could add Øystein Wiik in the Ås production. But we won’t this time around...
