Han/Leia Appreciation Week 2024

WE'RE BACK, BABY! "Wait, what's happening, wasn't this in August??" you might wonder. Based on your feedback, we decided to host this and (probably) future editions of Han/Leia Appreciation Week earlier in the year. July seemed like the better choice, given that it's a vacation period in both hemispheres!

This year we're also giving you the prompts over a month in advance, so you have plenty of time to plan and create!

Han/Leia Appreciation Week was an event originally hosted at @han-leia-solo between 2016-2019, but for the past three years, we've taken up the mantle here at @hanleiacelebration 😊

💖 How does Han/Leia Appreciation Week work?

The event will run from July 14th to July 20th, and there will be two different prompts each day that creators can fulfill with: fanfic, fanart, gifsets, graphics, fanvids, headcanons, crafts, playlists, rec lists. You’re encouraged to tag your posts with #hanleiaweek2024 so we can reblog them! After the week is over, we’ll share a masterlist with links to the works.

You can show your appreciation in many ways; however, please keep in mind that it has to be a creation of yours of some sort, e.g. don’t repost other people’s fanart, gifs, or unedited pictures. Rec lists should include a link to the original source both for fanfic and fanart (more on this after the cut).

FAQs and Rules under the cut - please read!

💕 Can I post my work to another site and share the link on Tumblr?

Yes! This is a good option for people who might want to create explicit art that could be taken down on Tumblr, write a long fic or multichapter, or make videos or playlists.

💕 Does it have to be a new creation? Can I finish and post a WIP?

It has to be something that has never been posted anywhere else before, so finishing and sharing a WIP is okay! If it doesn’t fit any of the prompts, you can share it on Free Day.

💕 Is this event open to all ratings?

Yes! Just remember to use a “Read more” cut if you’re posting the whole work on Tumblr, and to add a note at the top if your work is rated Mature or Explicit, as well as if it has any major trigger warnings, so all folks can safely browse through the entries.

💕 Are there any length or quality requirements?

There’s no min. or max. length for fanfic or quality level for art, but please note that AI-generated works won’t be accepted. For gifsets, there’s a minimum of two gifs (that must be made by you!). For playlists, there’s a minimum of five songs. For rec lists of fic or fanart, there’s also a minimum of five recs. Some more questions you might have about rec lists:

- How do I share someone else’s art without posting a picture? You might post a thumbnail that crops a preview of the piece; if the piece has a title, you might use that; you might describe it; or you might say something like “this piece by [artist]”, and link to the source.

- What if I found a fanart on Google? Try to find the original source using reverse search image.

- What if I can’t still find it, can I just say “credit to the artist”? In that case, please just don’t share the piece.

- What if I know the artist but don’t have a link to the original source? Naming the artist and linking back to where you found it is okay, in that case.

Please don’t worry too much about time zones: when we say “day”, we always mean “whenever that day is for you in your part of the world”. IE: if it’s Monday for you, you can post your work for the Monday prompt.

lol don't worry about it! Nothing about you talking about your fic will make me feel left out! I'm just happy to help you out with your work! If anything will make me feel left out, it's the lack of rogues content and people within this fanspace underutilizing Vlad and not having much of that juicy, juicy polycule content (specifically Vlad/Jack/Maddie) that I keep coming back to Danny Phantom for. :p Speaking of, I want to be as transparent as I can with the information I'm giving out, because just like all comics fans, I'm not an expert on everything and I am very much in my own specific niche and haven't read everything out there! I'm actually not much of a Batfam fan and am much MUCH more of a rogues fan! (Specifically my hyperfixation is focused around Harvey Dent and Two-Face.) So while I do have some information about the members of the batfamily, my knowledge isn't nearly as comprehensive as someone who's deep dived into that part of the DC universe! I'll give you the information I can, and hopefully someone with more cohesive Batfam knowledge can reblog this post with extra notes to fill in the holes I have in my knowledge. >.<

Adoption Order

So I can't tell you the specific specifics of adoption specifically, but I believe that the order of each member joining the Bat Family would probably be along the lines of: Dick Grayson -> Barbara Gordon -> Jason Todd -> Tim Drake -> Cassandra Cain -> Stephanie Brown -> Damian Wayne -> Duke Thomas.

Batgirl and Duke recs

Again, I haven't read much Bat Family stuff because my primary focus is on the rogues. But I do have a handful of recs! If you're willing to watch a long-ass video instead of reading, I would actually highly recommend Linkara's retrospective on Cassandra Cain and here's the link to said video! It's very good and goes into just about every major comic appearance she was in at the time of the video first coming out (in 2019)! You will get a very good image of her character from that, I like Linkara's analysis, and by watching that video, you will definitely be able to come away from it with a number of recommendations for both Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown! (He does talk about Steph some in this video, but it's limited.)

Speaking of Stephnie I'm sorry to say that I don't really have any recommendations for Steph as I sadly have just not really happened to come across any works that have her in them in my poking around in different comics and related media. But honestly, while I can't give you any recs for Steph, maybe you should toss Linkara (@atopfourthwall) a message! He's actually a decently active Tumblr user and given that he wants to do a different retrospective on Stephanie Brown, certainly he would have things to recommend!

As for other Cass reccomendations... The only thing I have in my back pocket is Spirit World. It's not about her, it's a solo series about the brand spanking new character, Xanthe Zhou, but Cass IS a main character in it, and people seem genuinely happy with what they did with her in that story!

If you're looking for good Barbra Gordon content... Well... Personally I would recommend giving her episodes in Batman: the Animated series or the issues that include her in The Batman Adventures a look-see...? It's always a solid time with her around in B:TAS, or in the Batman Adventures! They characterize her very well in those serieses!

If you want both a Cass and a Barbra suggestion... Maybe check out No Man's Land...? Asking you to read all of the comics that were part of that saga might be a little much, but there is a novel adaptation of the No Man's Land storyline out there, and personally I listened to the reading of that novel as done by Graphic Audio and it is genuinely excellent! Like, the marketing may be tacky, but it is on the level of quality as something like an audio drama podcast or a Big Finish Audio. It just happens to be a book reading. :p But No Man's Land IS where Cass was first introduced, (also where Harley Quinn joined the comics universe fun fact!) and it has plenty of good moments from Barbara in it too!

As for Duke... Honestly, if you aren't already reading the Wayne Family Adventures, then you really ought to. >.< That series is available for free on webtoon and the first several strips have him as the main character before it becomes more of an ensemble cast thing. (And in case you were wondering it IS official DC media!) >.< I also haven't read much of Duke's stuff, and so in terms of his backlog, I really don't know what to recommend. The one story that I did happen to read that heavily featured Duke... Was "My Own Worst Enemy" (it's like volume 1 of All-Star Batman) which was... Fine...??? Like, as a Two-Face and Harvey Dent story, it was pretty bad and ablest in how it portrayed Harvey's DID. (But this isn't necessarily unusual for books that include him... SIIIIIGH!) But it was also incredibly stupid and fun, and had a lot of good forwards momentum and offered a number of interesting ideas that I don't entirely hate! So overall I find it... Fine... But as a Duke story... Honestly it's not bad as far as a Duke story can go! And the back-up story for that little arc (the Cursed Wheel) was pretty alright too! I do feel like after I read My Own Worst Enemy that I did understand Duke just a little better as a character! So while it's not good... You might find it to be decent in what you're looking for...? Because I really cannot speak on any other stories he's been in. >.<

for fic recs: any fics that are just G1 level of Shenanigans™? anything else is dealer's choice

Oh, I like this enough I'll do a couple on-theme just for you, anon! Love that.

First one: a bunch of the fics by @sroloc--elbisivni in their "Spontaneous Earth" universe fit this bill. And I will always recommend every one of those fics to any G1 liker anyway so let me shill the whole lot for a sec. This is a fic universe that turns the G1 cartoon verse into something fantastic and coherent and engaging while still drawing in a very real way on the actual source material (in a way most G1-ish fic is reluctant to, given how silly G1 is).

Within that series I can specifically recommend *deep breath* "Solo with obbligato accompaniment of two voices in canon, and six short inventions on the subjects of the solo". This is a fic about Spike buying his own car and Bumblebee being very jealous. It is fantastic. And very funny. A+ weird robot car culture clash nonsense.

OK, so outside that whole series, let's have a standalone rec too.

The Poetry Incident, or, How Soundwave Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Megatron is G1 inflected but also kind of a mix with other continuities like Aligned. But listen. I am gripping your shoulders. Look at me. Listen to me. This is the only fic I have ever read that realises the COMEDIC POTENTIAL of Megatron/Soundwave. It is my favourite MegaSound fic of all time because it understands they are a slapstick romcom waiting to happen. This motherfucker GETS IT. Please read this one. It's peak "Soundwave is morosexual and Megatron is his ideal man" content.

zhongli/Sung Jinwoo: its ok, Solo Leveling after-story extras doesnt exist, Solo Leveling after-story extras cant hurt you like it hurt me. Sung Jinwoo, after becoming mostly-not-human at the end of the novel, essentially immortal and self-proclaimed protector of the entire earth, I think should fuck the 6000 year old retired dragon god Zhongli. Like, I think they can get along. Honestly that's mostly it. They're both like, these serious authority figure type of guys who just want to chill and I think they have a similar sense of humor. also i'm half-convinced zhongli will find jinwoo's death aesthetic hot, old guy's ex-boyfriends (not canon) all have their own corruption arcs (canon) and hey at least with sung jinwoo his '''corruption arc''' is just him becoming death itself so like, win-win?? what was I talking about.. anyway ship Zhongli/Sung Jinwoo for the fun times thank you <3

Mirage/V2: they've never met. one of them isn't even canon. their AO3 tag has 6 works in it. I do not take the word OTP lightly, I will die on this hill.

Mirage (she/any) is a spoof character from a noncanonical visual novel-themed secret level about nihilism and V2 (it/they/any) is a twice-recurring game boss whose story ends in it being irrevocably crushed into paste (fell off a pyramid) by its predecessor V1.

because they're barely even in the same game much less have any canon connection, the ship primarily exists because of Dream's End Come True, a fairly popular fanwork that isn't ship-focused but it's the first thing that put them together. like a sort of... very tiny big bang for a barely relevant pairing. and then it grew from there! you can read it at which is a real URL to a real webpage I stg. or just search it on google idc. I do not know if you're an adult so I won't rec 18+ fics but any of the fics in the ao3 tag are well-written :) (a couple of them are mine too lol)

as for the pairing itself: two robots. one fake (yet alive) machine, lonely from living in her world devoid of narrative significance. she was never meant to die. one real (yet dead) machine, lonely from lack of purpose in a harsh, dead hell. it was never meant to live. and then they kiss! they both need the company and mirage's more human mannerisms and joy of monologuing contrast in a really cute way with V2's robotic nature and ability to listen. they're cute. i like them more than anyone on this earth. put them in this poll. My Review:

This story is absolutely amazing! I love the world building and character interactions and there’s plenty of humor too (ch 5 is especially hilarious).

It’s a story where Ashborn stops the Architect from inflicting the system on Jin-Woo, but he’s too late to keep Jin-Woo from getting killed, so he makes him one of his shadows.

Jin-Woo is allowed to go back to earth and live his human life (and I guess he still looks human or they used magic), and Ashborn gives Jin-Woo resources and helps plan for when the Monarchs and Rulers arrive on earth.

I think the story is really cool and it’s already at 19,761 words. It hasn’t gotten much attention yet, which I think is a shame. Maybe it’s because the story only has the novel tag, while more people seem to follow the webnovel tag. But I really recommend you guys give this story a chance and leave a nice comment if you can.

Happy International Fanworks Day!!

OTW's Creative Lounge recently shared some bingo sheets in honor of February 15th, so I thought I'd participate :').

Instead of doing a creator bingo card for all my works, because I'd just end up filling in every single square, I thought I'd just do one for my current WIP, Divine Intervention, the annoying Solo Leveling SCY/SJW drabble series that floods the front page of SL Ao3 sometimes.

More rambling about my fic and how it all started below the cut if you're interested! 💛 includes fic recs :D

I honestly never thought I'd see the day where I'd be making (and populating) a new tag all by myself, but stranger things have happened since the pandemic started, so here we are I guess LOL.

Honestly, believe it or not, Divine Intervention originally began from Woo Jin-Chul/Sung Jin-Woo roots (which ok, may not be so surprising because I recall several readers thought that was the actual pairingwhen we were first getting started, woops). Namely, another WIP of mine, Divine Right of Kings.

They share a lot of similarities which may not be so evident, seeing as Kings is less than 10 chapters posted, but source dude just trust me. They're both canon divergence AUs; apotheosis stories; Jin-Woo is Shadow Monarch in neither of them; deuteragonists; and, most significantly, they both feature a largely human cast--as the plot progresses, the amount of actual solo leveling that gets done dwindles to nothing, all in hopes of writing a universe where Jin-Woo actually gets the emotional support he deserves after the traumatic events that took place within the first 10 or so chapters of canon.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ What can I say, I've got a type.

In the progress of planning Kings' main cast (besides the main pair), Chi-Yul popped up as a prime candidate for party member. An experienced hunter, his conflict was interesting from the get-go: a skilled swordsman who ended up in the wrong class. Who else's class commonly gets mistaken in SL? Well, Jin-Woo, except the reverse--where Chi-Yul doesn't successfully make the whole magic swordsman thing work, Jin-Woo pulls off assassin necromancer who revives whatever he kills pretty darn well.

The next step was figuring out how they would fit together.

Song Chi-Yul in Kings was supposed to play a very different role than in Divine Intervention. Namely, their dynamics are completely swapped: in Kings, I planned Chi-Yul as a mentor figure who teaches a still fledgling Jin-Woo magic early on, fostering a decent amount of trust to make the groundwork for their eventual partying. (Of course, well, we never got there, but still. I had plans, guys.)

We don't get too much of Chi-Yul in canon, so I began trying to write short snippets or oneshots just as exercise to get used to them interacting together. This, as it turns out, was either a terrible mistake for everyone who was waiting for me to write more WJC/SJW, or the birth of something truly great: a banger.

Fueled by my diehard R27 nostalgia to give me shipping lenses and a recent venture into the newest Fire Emblem game at the time, I knew I wanted some kind of knight-and-his-lady dynamic, though in the slash case, knight-and-his-lord. Kings' background gave me a solid inspiration for another apotheosis-type story, so now all I needed was a vibe.

TBH I have a lot of different inspiration sources for the vibe I was going for--something otherworldly, ephemeral, and ancient all at once. I think that deserves another post of its own lol (comprising of a lot of anime and manga, but it's the weeb in me what can I do 😔).

Imperceptible by forthright [Complete]: An Inuyasha Sesshomaru/Kagome drabble series.

A story told through a series of drabbles and oneshots, tracing the slow and steady progress of trust. Sesshoumaru x Kagome, CU.

He had only come here to fulfill a dying wish from a younger version of himself, to take his place in this world as Sawada Tsunayoshi. That had been fine, boredom plaguing him constantly in his long life as nothing seemed to matter anymore. So when Reborn arrives to train him as Vongola Decimo, he ends up with something a little more. Dark!Tsuna, Dark!Universe

I regularly go back to reread this when I need a bedtime story to assauge the 'ol insomnia. The supernatural vibes are off the charts. An old favorite is timeless :')

Satis by Eiserne [WIP]: Hellsing, Alucard/Integra Hellsing. 83.5k words.

Integra dies, only to wake up in the past, as a fifteen-year-old. AxI.

Jesus christ the loyalty kink. The vibe kink. The poetry kink. The feet kink, in a totally not weird way. I know it's the 2nd WIP on this list but just, trust me, I wouldn't rec it unless it would completely wreck you.....in a good way.

Anyway this wasn't a fic rec list on purpose so I'll leave it at that 😂 These are all enjoyable reads even if you know nothing of the fandom or characters involved!
