With the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), which has kept Native children from being purposefully removed from Native families into non-Native foster families since 1978, being reevaluated in the US Supreme Court, it is at risk of being greatly weakened and undoing decades of work to stop the systematic erasure of Native cultural identity.
(It may also re-designate the term "Indian" in the bill to mean a racial classification rather than political, reversing precedent with regard to tribal sovereignty. Native tribes must remain independent entities in the law rather than just a race to protect their rights to self-governance.)
The Lakota People's Law Project is asking US citizens to ask their state lawmakers to enact similar legislation at the state level which codifies the rights and protections ICWA gives to Native children should it be weakened in the Supreme Court. This is not protection for the ICWA itself, although they do have action you can take for that on their website as well. In the link is a pre-written email which you can personalize and easily send to your state lawmakers.
Thanks for your time. :)

SAVE THE DATE: 2024 National Day of Mourning
Thursday, November 28 - 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m.
Cole's Hill, Plymouth, Mass.
Hosted by United American Indians of New England
WHAT IS NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING?
An annual tradition since 1970, National Day of Mourning is a solemn, spiritual and highly political day. Many of us fast from sundown the day before through the afternoon of that day (and have a social after NDOM so that participants in NDOM can break their fasts). We are mourning our ancestors and the genocide of our peoples and the theft of our lands. NDOM is a day when we mourn, but we also feel our strength in action and solidarity.
WHEN AND WHERE IS DAY OF MOURNING?
Thursday, November 28, 2023 (U.S. "thanksgiving" day) at Cole's Hill, Plymouth, Massachusetts, 12 noon SHARP. Cole's Hill is the hill above Plymouth Rock in the Plymouth historic waterfront area. The rallies and marches will last until approximately 3 pm (sometimes later).
WILL THERE BE A MARCH?
Yes, there will be a march through the historic district of Plymouth. Plymouth agreed, as part of the settlement of 10/19/98, that UAINE may march on National Day of Mourning without the need for a permit as long as we give the town advance notice.
PROGRAM:
Although we very much welcome our non-Native supporters to stand with us, it is a day when only Indigenous people speak about our history and the struggles that are taking place throughout the Americas. Speakers are by invitation only. This year's NDOM will be livestreamed from Plymouth.

Jesus was not born in Israel. Jesus was born in a little town called Bethlehem where some of the first Christians were indigenous people who lived alongside their Muslim and Jewish neighbors. Jesus grew up in community spaces where olives, lemons, and strawberries grew in groves. Jesus preached and practiced radical on lands where generations of indigenous peoples across colors and cultures stewarded the land and served their communities in the face of empires, crusades, religious imperialism, and the rising tides fascism.
"If Christ were born today, he would be born under the rubble. I invote you to see the image of Jesus in every child killed and pulled from the rubble." ~ Reverend Munther Isaac in Bethlehem (December 2023)
Being Pro-Israel means supporting an Occupying State whose fascist politics and colonial impulses have facilitated the murder of over 20,000 people --- and 8,000 children --- in less than three months .
Beyond prayers and ceasefires, our solidarities must include reciprocity, reclamation, and justice for the indigenous Christian, Muslim, Jewish, queer, unhoused, (dis)abled, and (dis)placed people of Palestine. We must manifest one democratic state that frees people across colors and cultures from zionist-soaked colonialism and ethno-supremacist violence.
Let Gaza free you as heaven, nature, and whole world sing for joy and justice ✨️🌍🌿

“INDIGENOUS FUCKING RAGE”
I refuse to bow
I refuse to be silent
I refuse to listen to your whimpers
If you will sit there and lie
I will so easily watch you die
I do not yield their souls
Which you so gladly stole
You owe us a debt
That I will never forget

So I was perusing about Reddit, as I do cause I'm normally chillin' in trans and lesbian subreddits just vibing, and I see a post in r/Liberalgunowners talking about Kamala Harris's gun policy. Now, for whatever reason, in the last month, this subreddit has become pretty conservative. Now I went to make a rebuttal against someone saying they wouldn't vote at all cause Kamala isn't a good candidate for gun rights. Now, being a transfemme with a lot riding on this election, I point out this fact and how we can't pidgeon hole ourselves into single issues and how now is the time of putting the good of all Americans first before petty issues. He responds, saying how he's 55 years old and doesn't really care anymore cause he only jas 20ish years left.
I could not fathom this argument. As I am very open about growing up as an indigenous woman and, for us, the community, doing right for all, and providing for the next 7 generations are our paramount values. So to see someone say "yeah this doesn't affect me, so I'ma just care about this one thing for my personal benefit." honestly disgusted me. I am not one to judge most folks since many folks have their personal convictions for believing things... but really? Is this what colonial culture is? This is what killed my people? People who only care for themselves but not their neighbors and community? How could people be so heartless and greedy?
I know this was an emotional piece, but... I'm just... tired of this. Tired of people who benefit from colonial history trying to say that it's good to perpetuate colonial order. Can we, as Americans of all colors and backgrounds, do right by all, especially if you're older... we look up to you as our elders...
P.s If you're my gf reading this, don't kill me for not going to bed at midnight like I promised. I had to get this off my chest :3
