Welcome to my blog!!

I'm @sunos-official, a blog to celebrate the wonders of the BSD (and later SVR4)-based Unix from Sun Microsystems in all of its iterations (although this blog will primarily focus on versions up to and including Solaris 9, with some appearances of Solaris 10).

I'll be working on populating the queue with fun Sun Microsystems-related goodness. In the mean time, enjoy some SunOS user interfaces!!

Something so miserable about playing a tabletop system that is actively updating. Having something character based you couldn't use for two years, finally finally have it in your grasp only to move to the newest update an actually have the aspect completely deleted from existence. Actually legitimately crying in club like.... you took out the vampires ability to attack... with their fangs.

Hi :) I read plastic man no more. Was okay. Hope it gets darker and more like. Pedantic in a good way lol. If there's one thing I DO hate about it tho it's this fixation on labeling it "noir" and "bodyhorror" as opposed to just letting the nature of the story define itself, you know? I get that that's more marketing's fault but I find the more forced a genre is the less interesting it gets, because then it just gets caught up trying to recreate stereotypes instead of doing something creative. Time will tell..!!!

Album recommendation time, 'welcome oblivion' by 'how to destroy angels'. One of my favs that I just popped on for some appropriately dour background music :)

happy fabricator friday. time for me to post fabbylaris content okay?? obligatory these are all my personal headcanons and some of it has little to no basis in actual canon, it's mostly just me expanding on things I think make sense. with that out of the way.

I think, in theory, that Solaris is one of the very few people who could convince the Fabricator to leave Zoraxis. If not the only one. I doubt the Fabricator has many outside support systems, and while she could turn to the Agency for help... I doubt it'd go well for her.

So that leaves Solaris. Someone she worked closely with for years. Half a decade, at the very least. It would be incredibly difficult for her to get away with the amount of loyalty to Zor she has, and the manipulation she has to have experienced, and the fear for her life... But Solaris leaving might have planted the seeds of doubt in her mind. There's nobody she trusts more, despite the rocky start their relationship had.

I like to think that Solaris was the first person in over a decade, besides Zor, to actually... Interact with the Fabricator in a generally positive way. Solaris never belittled her, or talked down at her, or made her feel like she wasn't worthy of her rank... Because despite her prominence in Zoraxis, I don't think the Fabricator truly has a seat at the table. And this isn't really new to her, she's far too accustomed to being looked down on, but... It stings. With Solaris, though, she's finally someone's equal. There's mutual respect. It's nice, being appreciated...

So of course if she wanted to leave she would seek out the one person who might not turn her away. What else would she have?

The Enigma of Solaris is a short interactive game set on the Solaris station, where you must find the reason for the power loss threatening the lives of its inhabitant, fighting any hurdles along the way. It can be played as a choice-based or (limited) parser. There seemed to only be one ending.

Spoilers ahead. It is recommended to play the game first. The review is based on my understanding/reading of the story.

The story was reminiscent of those old pulp sci-fi stories, with the strive for advancement at the cost of human life, and the hubris of it all. The game is not afraid to go at full speed into those tropes, which makes it a bit comical (in a good way). The visual characterisation of the NPC add a bit of creepyness to the situation, with it's uncanny valley-esque vibe.

Though I quite enjoy bite-sized games, this one felt somewhat incomplete - as if a whole part of the story or a different angle to it was missing. Starting strong with multiple options to explore the station, interact with different elements, and diagnosing the issue, the player sees its agency disappear by the second half of the game - railroaded towards the ending, with not even the illusion of being able to make a choice.

I think it could have made the ending a bit more satisfying if you had a final choice between fulfilling the mission to save lives or being persuaded to take a path of higher purpose just before the end. Maybe even a bit more choice in conversation with the second NPC.

There was also a bit of friction with the engine used, with the image messing a bit with the placement of the text (if they were more to the side, it would be nicer), or the longer portions of the text forcing you to scroll up and down to read the new bits.

Anyone else confused by the magic genetics in Air Awakens? Because in chapter two, Victor says that magic isn't genetic. However, throughout the series we see a few things that seem to contradict this. (Mild spoilers below )

Firstly, magic appears to have a strong ethnic link. Those who are ethnically Western are more likely to be firebearers, Southerners are waterrunners, Easterners are windwalkers, and Northerners are Groundbreakers. We don't really see any instances of someone who is 100% Southern being a groundbreaker, firebearer, or windwalker, for example. So that implies that there has to be some sort of genetic component to magic, otherwise we wouldn't be seeing such a strong correlation between ethnicity and magic type.

Additionally, even though Victor says that two Commons can have sorcerer children and vice versa, we still see a lot of people talking about family links with magic. What I mean by this is how, for example, in the first Vortex Chronicles book Vi is doubting whether she has enough magic, and she is told that of course she is a strong sorcerer, both of her parents are! (Her being a Lightspinner kind of disrupts my first point but she also literally gets possessed by a deity so I think she's just weird, plus she's also still a firebearer in a way.) And even though Aldrik is both Southern and Western, he is a firebearer, which makes sense considering the ethic correlation, him being a Firebearer seems to be attributed to his mother's family's legacy of being strong Firebearers. So therefore, it seems generally accepted that there is a family genetic link regarding magic. This is also seen in the Tournament series, with Eira's waterrunner capabilities causing theories that her mother is Adela, again attributing magic strength (and style, which also raises interesting implications) to family genetics.

But then at the same time, we still see that two Commons can have a sorcerer child and vice versa, which could technically still happen if there was a genetic component to it, but doesn't always make sense, since one can be a sorcerer even if they have no magical ancestry, so the parents can't be carriers or anything like that.

So yeah, magic inheritance in the Air Awakens universe is kind of confusing.

As hard as it is there's something so beautiful in being plural. Every version of me that's ever been lives frozen inside of me and my fellow parts can take my hand and tell me that it's okay, that I will be loved unconditionally one day, and I can meet the people who love the future versions of me. I call one of my parts my twin brother, and oh how he's grown, how both of us have grown, since the days we were 16 and doing our best to survive. I was fused with him for a while. It fell apart but I still remember how wonderful it was to be intertwined so closely with someone I love so much, and I can't wait to be together full time again. I can't find it in me to regret how so very special it can be to be able to fall in love with different aspects of myself over and over again.
