And what, pray tell, will you be doing with all your time away from me? No more running away from our villains? Please tell me you plan on doing something constructive.

Oh, I do. I have a list. "Things that Got Away from Me."

A list, she says. I am doing my best to fight the urge to critique it, I assure you. Since, as you said, you need a break from me.

First, I'm going to Costa Del Sol.

The beach? Whatever for?

I promised someone a dance. They're at the beach in Costa Del Sol, waiting for me.

In all my time with you, my Warrior of Light, I have heard naught more strange than that. Go. I will be here if you need to call on me.

Lightning cracked across the sky at Costa Del Sol, a fierce accent to the driving rain that turned the usually beautiful locale into a miniature monsoon. Even from out here, up by the hills with wild cattle huddled together for warmth, Minti Chocolate could see specks of glittering reds and golds, and feathers tossed about on the wind. Troupe Falsiam was here, that was good. They must not have moved about much since the last time she was here. Hopefully Minti would not be recognized in the rain, and could just slip through the musicians without recognition. All she needed to do was find Ranaa, and surely, surely her extreme tardiness would be forgiven.

Right. Here goes.

With every step Minti took, came the threat of being sucked down by soaking wet sand. Perhaps wearing her knight's armor in a torrential rain storm wasn't such a good idea. Upon further reflection, yes, this was a terrible idea, especially since the Troupe's musicians, all seated by one of the seaside bars, were beginning to stare at her. One of them gave a sharp whistle and wave towards the quieter part of the beach. So much for sneaking by, right?

I would love to give you the solution to this little problem, but, I am afraid that I am not available right now. Oh, and do look behind you, Minti.

I warned you. Good luck.

Minti felt her shoulder being tapped, rather sharply at that. A quick turn around revealed a hyur woman on the older side, with greying brown hair and black glasses that were rapidly getting wet. She might have been on the smaller side, at least compared to Minti, but that didn't make her any less intimidating.

Nashmeira, the principal dancer and leader of Troupe Falsiam, looked up at the armored Viera with daggers in her eyes. At least, that's what it felt like. "Miss Chocolate," she said with quiet authority, looking her wayward performer up and down. "It has been *some* time since I've seen you. You look well."

"You're looking wet. Ma'am." Minti turned her head in the direction of the bar. A drink would be just perfect right about now. "Fancy finding you here! Isn't it...great..."

"As I recall, and I do recall correctly, you mentioned that you needed to assist the Scions with some business regarding primals."

"Yes, ma'am."

"And then you did not return, for some time." Nashmeira brushed rain drops from her hair. "Until today."

"Until today, yes ma'am." Would the sand just hurry up and swallow Minti already, please!

I know you're afraid, Marget. Make an excuse and go. You don't need to be here if you're going to fail again.

"I take your returning to mean you still wish to stay in the Troupe? That you want to re-learn how to dance our ancient arts?" Nashmeira gestured over towards an umbrella, away from the pouring rain. "We can talk more where we won't catch our death of cold. Come."

"Yes, ma'am."

The two dancers - one principal, one up-and-coming - spent the rest of the storm catching up, talking about all the accomplishments Minti had made since the day she left Costa Del Sol. It became clear that Nashmeira wasn't angry, more just concerned that she had done something to drive a dancer with such potential away. There would time for forgiveness, if Minti wished for it. "I know that Ranaa would be overjoyed to see you again," Nashmeira said. "She has talked ever so much about you, in your absence.

Now, I've said my piece, Miss Chocolate. What of you? Will you come back?"

The next morning, along the beach at Costa Del Sol, a beautiful viera dressed in fiery reds and golds, with two silver chakrams at her side, spun in joyful partnership with the rising sun.

Summary: Asmo has an eating disorder which sometimes claims him full force. Solomon is there to make sure he gets the love and support he needs.

In the mornings Solomon always loved to get as much extra cuddle time in as possible. But, sadly, both of them were pretty busy people.

Solomon sighed as he sat up. He rubbed his eyes, stretching his tight limbs. He leaned down and kissed a sleeping Asmo's forehead.

Part of him wanted to flop back down into bed, yet he couldn't. Duty calls.

There was a disbalance of an ancient runes in the Human Realm. And whenever there are disbalances of magic in the Human Realm, weird things begin to happen. So, of course, as the most powerful sorcerer, it was his job to fix this.

He worked through his morning routine. He took a shower, got dressed, did his hair. He went to the kitchen to make himself breakfast. As he cooked, he slowly got confused. Usually Asmo would come out and hug him from behind, watching him cook the food he always refused. Yet, he didn't.

Solomon finished the meal, setting it on the table to eat. The house was oddly quiet. Even if Asmo didn't come out, he'd probably just shower and do his extensive skin care routine, but nothing.

He rinsed his plate off, digressing from the routine. Real quick, he went to check on Asmodeus.

As he stepped into their room, he noticed that Asmo was still laying in bed. Though, he wasn't sleeping anymore.

He stared at the wall, eyes glossed over. His cheek was dragged against the pillow, mouth slightly open.

Solomon frowned at the sight, approaching his boyfriend. He crouched down to face level. Asmo looked up at him, making eye contact before quickly diverting his eyes.

"Are you feeling alright," He asked, worry heavy in his tone.

Asmo closed his mouth, forming a small frown. His eyebrows pinched together as he shook his head.

With a sad sigh, he leaned in and kissed Asmo's cheek, "Are you feeling sick? Or just upset?"

A weak shrug came from Asmo. That wasn't a good sign. What could be plaguing him? Is it something that is upsetting him so much that he feels sick? Does he just feel gross? Does he really not know what is causing it?

"You're busy," Asmo's weak, vulnerable voice spoke, "I'll be okay."

The strawberry blonde put on a painfully fake smile that made his heart sink at the sight, "I don't have to leave if you need something. There is always another solution! More than one option! Somebody can stand in fo-"

"Sol," He spoke again, voice cracking, "It's fine. The world needs you."

"You are my world," He shouted without thinking. It came out cheesier than he anticipated. Though, he hardly anticipated anything, speaking without a thought. Yet, it was true.

Asmo was blushing slightly at the confession, "Go."

He frowned again, thoughts conflicting. Should he leave Asmo alone? This was rather important. Both things were.

Sure, he'd be back sooner than later.....

But, is it soon enough? He bit his lip, not sure what to do.

"Dear, it's okay, just go," He smiled softly at the term of endearment.

"Fine, I'll go," He ultimately decided, "I'll be back soon! Then you will be admitting what's wrong."

Asmo continued to lay there. He was usually up and ready to do so much. He makes smoothies for breakfast, showers, does hair and makeup for hours, not to mention morning jogs or videos. He does blog or do get ready with me's often.

Yet, today there is nothing. He lays there, sad and vulnerable. Solomon's heart aches for him. It will have to wait.

Quickly but carefully he'll finish his mission and return back to Asmo.

The door shut behind Solomon with a loud thud.

The house was silent.

His mind wasn't very silent, however.

Asmo needed Solomon to leave. He needed to check. It was important.

He doesn't want to get up.

The bed sucks him in, enveloping him in it's warmth and comfort. All is silent, all is forgiving.

If he stayed in bed, he wouldn't have to face the day, wouldn't need to face himself, wouldn't need to know.

He has to get up.

It's been too long since he last checked. He thought he was recovering. He was wrong.

The scale and measuring tapes were so familiar to him. He'd cut them off. They wanted revenge.

He couldn't have gained weight, could he?

Either way, he'd stuck to the same diet. He even continued to jog, run, and work out, even if his vision became dotted and he had to vomit. He had to stay fit, so he continued to exercise.

They say that proper exercise needs to be paired with a proper diet. His diet works for him. It keeps him at the same weight, keeps his waist the same size.

He'd splurged recently, though. He ate bigger meals, exercised less.

He pushed the blanket off of himself, body shaking. He sat up, staring down at his body. There were no rolls, he had a thigh gap, he had what most would consider to be the perfect body.

So, why didn't he love it?

It wasn't good enough, not perfect enough. He's heard media, he's read his comments. He's still too fat. He has to lose more weight. Nobody would want to fuck him if he was fat and ugly.

He's supposed to be fawned over, not avoided.

Imagine what Solomon would think! He wouldn't be able to handle it! Asmo wasn't as skinny anymore, he was sure of it! Solomon will be disgusted once he notices. He wasn't the same size as when they'd started dating.

He stepped over to his vanity, hands shaking as he pulled open the drawer. He pulled out a tiny tape measure.

Asmo pulled off the thin tanktop he was wearing, discarding it onto the end of their bed.

His hands shook, he bit his lip, holding his breath as he wrapped the cold tape around his waist.

His eyes were squeezed shut in forced suspense. He didn't want to look.

Slowly, he opened one of his eyes, the other following suit. His eyes trailed down his torso until he reached the offending area.

No...

He was right...

His waist had grown two millimeters.

He shrieked, dropping the measure onto the floor.

That's nothing. It's okay. You're overreacting. A millimeter is only a dimes thickness! You'll be fine.

It's so much. It's too much.

No one will even notice.

Everyone will notice.

He accidentally catches a glimpse of himself in the mirror.

He looked horrible.

His eyes had significant bags under them, his skin was dry, his freckles were showing, not hidden by any makeup.

If his fans saw him right now, they'd be disappointed. This is not the Asmo they know and love. It's a fake. It's an insecure shell of a man. He's a fool.

He's overcome with a wave of naesua.

Everything he's eaten in the past twenty-four hours needs to be gone. He rushes ro the bathroom, collapsing onto the floor, letting his guts out into the toilet. The sound was horrible. The retching, the gasps, the sloshing and ripping of liquid.

He whimpered, tears dripping down his face. Had the tears only just started, or had they been here all along?

He retched, trying to expell liquids that did not exist.

Desperately, he shoved his fingers into his mouth, attempting to stimulate the gag reflex that he had gotten rid of a long time ago. Lucky for him, he did get it to work.

He continued to reach and gasp, stomach acids coming out, making his throat burn.

His whole body was on fire. He was sweating. He felt disgusting. He felt clammy.

He touched the back of his hand to his forehead, frowning at the feeling.

Worst of all, he felt incredibly exhausted. And maybe that's how his head lolled. That's how he fell asleep, face slick against the toilet seat.

Solomon had been worrying about Asmo the entire time. It lasted way longer than it should have. But, at least he's finally home.

He rushed to the bedroom, finding an empty bed in response.

His confusion didn't last long, as he noticed that the bathroom light was on.

The door was open, which was common for Asmo, especially if home alone.

He planned to only glance, see him in there, and then wait in the room for him. But, Asmo wasn't using the bathroom.

Asmo was laying in a crumpled pile on the tile. He had possibly fallen asleep with his head on the toilet seat, then having his body relax enough to slide off.

In the toilet sat too much vomit. It made Solomon want to throw up for Asmo. He was suffering, clearly. That made him impossibly sad.

He scopped his boyfriend up, carrying him to their bed, laying him down in his spot. Since he showed no sign of fever, but was still hot, he kept the blanket off.

Then, he returned back to the bathroom, flushing the toilet and turning out the lights.

Solomon sat on the bed, pulling Asmo onto his lap, stroking his hands through his hair.

Apparently, Asmo wasn't in a deep sleep, as he began to stir. The stirring didn't last, he woke up quickly.

As he awoke, he sat up, looking at Solomon. He then flopped back against his chest with a small 'humph'.

"Do you have some sort of cold or flu?" Solomon questioned, Asmo weakly shook his head.

Solomon thought for a moment, "So it's mental?"

There was no speech or movement for a solid few seconds, but then he did nod.

"Talk to me," He encouraged, "I'm here for you."

Luckily, Asmo did reply, "My waist grew two millimeters."

The urge to say 'So?' was his first impulse. Then was confusion. Why did that matter? He's still beautiful as ever! Solomon never would have noticed such a change. Could anyone else even notice?

"Okay," He said, "I don't mind at all. I would have never noticed myself, if that makes you feel any better."

"How could you not notice?" Asmo replied, "It's so obvious! Next thing you know I'm going to be fat and ugly and everyone will hate me! I have to be perfect! Nobody will love me if I'm not!"

"I love you!" Solomon exclaimed, "I couldn't care less about your weight or appearance! I just want you to be happy! But, if that happiness comes at the expense of your health, I'll need to stop it. You're important to me! Don't forget that!"

"You're lying," Asmo whispered, voice sad as ever, "I am only Mr appearance."

"That's not even true!" Solomon was upset, upset that Asmo couldn't see that he was perfect no matter what, "If I gained a little bit of weight, would you hate me!"

"Of course not!" Asmo raised his voice in emotion, "You're still you either way! I could never hate you for that! You're looks are only a plus, and those looks wouldn't be ruined by any extra fat!"

"Then why can't you apply that to yourself?" He asked, sadness overcoming him.

"Because that doesn't apply to me!" Asmo screamed, tears running down his face, "That doesn't apply to me and it never has!"

Solomon felt tears run down his own cheeks.

Asmo continued, "I was created for my looks! I was never meant to have a personality! I was an attention-graber! Nothing more! That's what Father created me for, after all! And after I fell here it only became worse!"

Asmo was sobbing, voice cracking with emotion, "I went from the Jewel of the Heavens to the Avatar of fucking lust. Nobody cared what I thought, nobody cares now! All they wanted was to fuck me! 'Who wants a taste of the fucking whore!' 'He's a slut! He'll do whatever you want him to!' 'He's still up for more rounds! How disgusting!'"

He took a sharp intake of breath, coughing on it. They were both standing now, had been for awhile. Solomon took a step towards him, Asmo stepped away, "Every single day I am flooded with comments telling me that I am not good enough! People say that I'm not even attractive! They say that people only like me because I'm easy! Nobody cares about my personality! They just want me in bed! Past partners flaunted me around, bragging about how attractive I was! They never bragged about how kind I was, all the extra things I did for them, the cute little things I do that are unique to me, no! It was always, 'Look who I get to fuck!'"

"I care about your personality!" Solomon broke through, "You do so many adorable things that you probably don't even realize. You're the kindest person I've ever met! Not to mention the fact that you always sacrifice yourself for others. You manage to always cheer me or your brother's up! You love resplendent quetzals! A type of bird that most people don't even know of. You've always been a dog person, particularly bigger dogs, but they have never been your go to animal. You'd live to own a bunny, though. You have all these cute little details that make you, you, that I've always loved!"

Asmo stays silent, Solomon has more, "You whisper your thoughts under your breath, you get this little disgusted look whenever you see a bad outfit put in public, your eyes light up when you see a new store you'd love to go to, you really like heavy met, yet don't tell anybody, you nod your head along to little rhythms in your head during class, and more! There are so many good things about you Asmo! If anybody else takes that for granted, then they're the dumb ones!"

Asmo stepped forward, laying his head against Solomon's chest, "Thank you."

Solomon smiled, petting his hair, "Always."

Asmo wrapped his arms around Solomon, "I love you."

"I love you too," Solomon returned the hug.

He rocked them back and forth, humming a small tune. When Asmo began to relax in his arms, he laid down, laying Asmo against his chest.

Cuddled together, Asmo fell asleep.

He looked so adorable when he slept. If only he knew that. If only he knew that he was perfect, even as he lets out drool and soft snores.

There were no requirements necessary. Asmo is perfect.

Briefly mentioned in the tags of my exandroth dress drawing, this is my oc Elizabeth Lydon. I've decided I'll put more stuff under the cut if you wanna read a bit more abt her. But I think what's most important to note is that she is a doctor, and generally a very good hearted, compassionate and determined person.

She's caring, but not typically in a spoken way or by using physical affection. Sometimes she seems dismissive because of that, but actually it's just because she's caring in a practical way - if that's how you'd best describe it. When someone vents to her, she might not immediately go to comfort them because she gets caught up in thinking about what to do about that problem. Elizabeth files it away in the back of her mind and puzzles over it, organises everything she needs and then gets back to you with solutions. When it comes to neighbours, she has more than once rocked up to houses with a bunch of tools and supplies to fix that ONE step that you said was annoying you a fortnight ago. And she'll quietly work away at it until she's done before heading home. It may seem a bit strange at first, but it's just her way of doing things.

Anyways. She was conceived all the way back in 2017 (god it's been half a decade) and she's remained essentially the same in concept the entire time. I've made minor adjustments to her story and personality, but that's about it aside from jumping universes! To try and keep the 'jumping universes' bit brief: I had all my OCs together in one universe; they were all wacky and had unique things happening because I was a little lad having fun with characters; the primary group of OCs developed overtime to become more 'realistic' (for lack of a better term) with a more 'realistic' universe; this year I've decided to take certain characters and concepts that were more magical and shove them into a new universe with a fantasy setting where they wouldn't conflict with the 'realistic' setting of the previous universe. Hopefully that makes sense.

Her character concept in question was that she was a doctor! But not just that, she's a time travelling doctor. Originally her time in the past was going to be more involved, but I've changed that now because I don't want to think about time travel too much. As it is, she goes back in time and studies older forms of medicine and disease to create remedies for her clinic in current time. Nobody quite understands HOW she got so prolific in medicine, but she is incredibly well known in the world for both the effectiveness of her medicine and its incredibly humble pricing.

The pocket watch is the secret to her time travelling capabilities. It's a magical mechanism that's been passed down through her family for generations now. In exchange for the family's good deeds, the entity that bestowed the watch permits they continue to use it. The only item that matches it is a bell that is kept in the cottage her family uses for business. When the bells is rung it will ring through the watch and basically serve as a beckoning home. This is VERY useful for obvious reasons. If Elizabeth is asked for in person, the bell can be rung and she'll be sure to come back home.

Maybe that doesn't quite make sense. I guess the way I imagine it is that the bell and the watch are both running in the same linear time. The bell is like an anchor. You can go to any point in the past- But when you have to come home you're brought back to the same point in time as the bell. So if the bell is rung on a Thursday and the watch is back in time on a Monday, you can't just wait a day and then go back to Thursday. When the watch is experiencing Tuesday, for the bell it's now Friday. Sorry if my explanation is messy. I hope that makes sense.

"But Sol, couldn't this easily fall into the wrong hands and be used for nefarious purposes?" Well yeah! Probably! If someone was REALLY desperate to have it they could find a way! But it would be difficult to acquire. And overall this fantasy world is a pretty optimistic, fun one? Like sure. I could make a plot around this. But that's for a DnD campaign or something. When it comes to me writing for myself? Naw. I like things being nice and warm and friendly! People are good, they act in good faith! ^ ^

Thoughts on the Karl Jacobs thread

Market share may be good for the company, but it’s not necessarily good for you, the customer. I think Karl could do better in being aware of these types of nuances in the future.

On Apr 4 Karl replied to the Twitch Support Twitter account with some thoughts about their announcement that they were going to implement sponsored streams on Twitch.

Karl, in a four-tweet reply thread, stressed that he was “wildly unimpressed” and called the implementation a “malicious and manipulative bandaid solution”,  arguing that Twitch should not implement sponsored streams, and should instead focus on growth and market share over profitability. This seemed odd to me, that Karl would suggest that a company as large as Twitch was misstepping by trying to do something so egregious as turn a profit. But it appeared I was in the minority, going by the overwhelmingly favorable replies and quote tweets.

So I made this post. Just to present another way of thinking about this issue :)

Is growth and market share a good thing for a company to hold? Sure, for the company. In fact, increasingly the attitude of startup companies is to ignore profits for longer and longer time periods so they can get exactly that- the lion’s share of a market/user base (think Amazon, Uber). However, we have to remember two things:

There is a real cost (money, and people) to doing business this way

The monetary debt that is racked up has to come due at /some/ point, and users often pay the price

1: The cost of growth - regular companies without large pockets are unable to compete with growth companies, going out of business and leaving all the power in the hands of a few giant corporations

Amazon notoriously operated at razor thin (to nonexistent) profit margins for years. They /purposefully/ sold their merchandise for less than it was worth, operating at a loss specifically so they could put competitors out of business. Diapers.com, Zappos, nearly Barnes & Noble, likely several others that were too small to be mentioned - competitors gone, absorbed, or maimed. Uber purposefully used introductory pricing, lowering their fees to make their inroads into the market, cannibalizing Yellow Cab. All for the sake of growth. Amazon kept its edge by copying real products from real hard working people and making rip-off versions so that they don’t have to do any development work and instead can capitalize on the success of anyone that comes along.

THIS is how growth works - get big, and get big fast, and eff the poor guy who is in the way, even if their product is /better/. (Even if their product is priced the way it is so they can afford to pay their employees!!)

And if this seems too abstract (companies compete all the time, so what?), it’s real to you - the more growth tactics put competitors out of business, the more power the few companies left will hold. And they don’t always use it well.

Have you ever tried to get a hold of Instagram or YouTube if someone falsely flags your post/video? The recommended method (known by large creators as well, even though they have representatives to help them get around it) is not to go through the company’s appeal process, it’s to go to Twitter and AT the company! Ticketmaster, which holds 70% of the ticket market, implements service fees on top of the ticket price (some which go to the venue, some which they take as profit) - and these can be pricey, but if you want to see major acts, you’re stuck!

Market share may be good for the company, but it’s not necessarily good for you. The more power a single corporation has, the less they have to pay attention to any individual customer’s needs, so you’re sol if you have issues with how they treat you - they have a million more users waiting to replace you.

2: Growth companies rack up costs that have to be paid back, and these costs are often passed on to the customer

Growth companies lose money on their products through introductory pricing, (and paying employees and buying server space and and and) but they can’t stay making no profits forever for (at least) two reasons:

a - unfavorable business conditions and

b - competitors with bigger pockets.

A - Not too long ago, a virus no one saw coming impacted the entire world, closing 700,000 businesses in the US alone. These businesses went under because they had no money. It might be ‘annoying’ that Twitch is introducing sponsored streams, but these streams bring in money to help keep the doors open in case any unforeseen events happen in the future. It’s good for Twitch to be profitable, it’s like having a savings account of funds to dip into in bad weather times.

B - Growth companies have to fight /other/ growth companies. Netflix was happy putting Blockbuster out of business... until it met Disney+ and Amazon Prime and HBO Max and and and. Twitch was happy without sponsored streams... until Kick and YouTube decided to push for streaming. These growth companies are fine making no money as long as they’re the biggest fish - they can always milk their users for money later. But the moment they find a competitor who can steal their users and put them out of business, suddenly the scramble is on for cash.

Where does the cash to keep the doors open come from? In some way, shape or form, the user generally has to pay for it. Either they do what Uber did and bring prices back up once they want to turn a profit or they do what Netflix is doing and introduce an ad-based tier/no password sharing, or they do what YouTube did and introduce ads or what Twitch is doing and kill the 70/30 split for their favorites and introduce sponsored streams - eventually all of these companies have to stop eating loses and make a plan for profitability, and that price hike or decline in the user experience will always come after (sometimes years after) they have lured in enough users with introductory rates that no one can meaningfully complain.

So what do we do? And what does this mean for what Karl tweeted?

I think we need to slow the roll with the growth tactic stuff. Profitability is not a bad word (see: Apple). It (generally) means you have a good product/service/idea and it’s selling well. What is ‘malicious and manipulative’ might actually be the way growth companies do business, putting competitors out of commission through unfair pricing. Having to turn a profit might actually force them to /compete/ in the marketplace instead of undermine it.

I think Karl is coming from a good place in trying to speak up for the users and creators of the site, who might get annoyed at having to sit through a sponsored stream or annoyed at having to do them. And that’s fair! We need that kind of advocacy, goodness knows Twitch has issues (low discoverability on the platform, for example). He talks about wanting to keep Twitch from ‘exploiting its creators’ and stop ‘massive layoffs’. That’s great! (You know what might stop massive layoffs? Profits)  But the way to do it is not, in my opinion, to subscribe to flawed business methodologies that result in the consolidation of power in the hands of a few corporations at the expense of users.

Instead.

I think what Karl could focus on is advocating that the creators and those who work at Twitch should see a larger percentage of the profits that the company makes. It might be easier to do a sponsored stream or sit through one when you know Twitch is handing over 70% of the revenue to the creator, or that Twitch is using the revenue to support well paid employees and not lay them off in hard times! I think Twitch could consider including creators in the decision making process of the platform whose influence they help to build. Honestly, I actually think Twitch should even look into whether its business model fundamentally is sound when it can be so easily replicated or poached (*ahem* Kick/YouTube *ahem* Ludwig). These are all tough questions that need to be asked.

But it’ll take time to figure them out. And I think it would be nice if Twitch gets a little bit of our support and patience in addition to our skepticism as they try to figure it out.

Have a Long-Term Water Storage Plan for Emergencies:

Water is earth's most valuable resource. It is the essential element to survival. All living things need it to survive. But in the near future, there may not be enough to sustain life on our planet.

AMOUNT TO STORE:

Storing and knowing how to gather and decontaminate water is necessary in every emergency plan and emergency supplies kit. It is said that the average person can survive only three (3) days without water. Following a disaster, clean drinking water may not be available. Regular water sources could be cut-off or compromised through contamination. If evacuating, water sources will take on many undesireable and contaminated forms. Building a supply of water is only the beginning of preparing for an emergency. After the initial supply is gone, knowing how to collect and decontaminate subsequent supplies is crucial. The search for potable (drinkable) water sources should always be a major priority. Considering the amount of water a person uses in one day under normal conditions, it's no wonder that water storage should be a priority for emergency situations. Calculate minimum water storage amounts to be 1 gallon of water [drinking (32 ounces) and sanitation] per day per person for a minimum of 3 days. More is better. Children, nursing mothers and sick people may need more water. Water use may increase for a medical emergency and warm weather climates and can double in very hot temperatures. Additional water must be considered in emergency water storage plans for Pets and to re-hydrate dehydrated foods. A mimimum of 32 ounces of drinking water per day, per person, should be calculated in the water storage plan. If the local water supply or well is contaminated, turn off the water supply to the residence/business.

When a working faucet is not available, consider these options. Filtering and Purification methods should always be applied.

Replenishable Water Sources should always be sought after

Residence / Office: Hot Water Heater, Toilet, Ice Trays, Bath Tub, Hot Tub, Dehumidifier, Sink, Garden Hose. At the very first alert of a serious Emergency, fill all of these water reservoirs then turn off the public water supply to prevent internal water storage contamination from the outside. Try to prevent contamination of water sources but ALWAYS treat and filter water before use.

Community: swimming pools, exterior spigots on houses and office buildings (get a Sillcock Key), water drainage systems, pot holes.

Undrinkable: While not the ideal solution for drinking water, in a crisis situation, nearly any water can be distilled and filtered to make drinkable (potable) water, even Urine and Salt Water. Read about Uses for Urine.

Nature: Ocean, lakes, ponds, streams, puddles, some plant leaves, vines, Solar Still, Plant Transpiration Bag, Rain Catching, Fog Catching, Morning Dew Collection from surfaces by soaking up with rags.

PURIFYING:

Generally, any type of water can be made drinkable (Potable) with the correct method to filter and purify it. Read Methods to Purify Water

STORAGE METHODS:

Commercially bottled water is the safest and most reliable emergency water supply

Keep bottled water in its original container and do not open until you need to use it

Observe the expiration or "use by" date (about 18 months shelf life)

Personal water containers require special considerations

Do not use glass containers because they can break and are heavy

Use food grade water storage containers from surplus or camping supplies stores

If reusing commercial drink containers

Use 2-liter plastic soft drink bottles – not plastic jugs or cardboard containers

Do Not Use containers that have had milk or fruit juice in them

Before use, thoroughly clean containers with dishwashing soap & water & rinse completely

Sanitize: add a solution of 1 teaspoon of non-scented liquid household bleach to a quart of water

Swish sanitizing solution in the container so that it touches all surfaces

After sanitizing, thoroughly rinse out the sanitizing solution with clean water

Fill container to the top with regular tap water*

Label the container with a 6-month "use by" date and Replace the water every six (6) months

Store all water in a cool, dark place

Reusing Water: Consider water as a very valuable resource. Don't waste the drinking water, that has expired, by dumping it down the drain. Just because it should not be used for internal consumption, reuse it for washing the body, clothes or dishes, flushing the toilet, watering the garden, filling the car radiator or anything else that uses water. Always think about alternate uses for anything you are about to throw away.
