Idk about you, but there was a period of ATLA fans trying their damn hardest to convince me that Katara didn't get any hate. And then when I counted that yes, she did (I didn't make up all of 2020 and 2021 ffs), they told me to calm down?? Like, am I the only one who's experienced this?
The people who are so "neutral" in this fandom are actually the worst ones istg
IT’S SO WEIRD! It’s not even just revisionist history, it literally still happens today. Reddit is overrun with “haha Katara dead mom” jokes. Redditors really show their asses with their simultaneous contempt for Katara and their fervent defense of Ka/taang.
On Tumblr I blame the Zu/kka shippers lmao (who also tend to be the ones who claim to be neutral multishippers, as if multishipping wasn’t the norm in this fandom, yes even amongst the ZKs). Some m/m shippers really want to get rid of the female character in the way of their m/m ship. Which, hey, shipping is supposed to be fun, and if you put Katara with Aang or Azula or Haru or Suki or whoever with zero development for the purpose of your Zu/kka, there’s nothing wrong with that! They do that with Mai and Ty Lee, no drama, bc Mai is not so well developed as a character.
It’s just that…instead of admitting they want to get rid of Katara so that they can enjoy their Zu/kka, they emphasize how she’s so mean to their woobie Zuko, or to their woobie Sokka. Then you get absolutely wild mental gymnastics that are just Katara slander with more steps, like the baffling “homophobic Katara” headcanon (as if Katara, who allowed a fortuneteller to dictate her breakfast and spent the entire show waffling over whether she likes a boy, is any less likely to be queer). People on Tumblr don’t hate on Katara directly anymore because they know it’s misogynistic, so instead we are subjected to a wide variety of random ass takes. The latest form of Katara slander is “just let her be a kid” and assigning her qualities to Sokka, which I categorically refuse to read, because it pisses me off. People are so weird about Katara.
I think this must be something specific to Zu/kka, not m/m ships in general. My first major ship was Klaine and female character slander was not an issue at all. Anyway I ship all variations of Fire Sib x Water Sib (except the incest ones, which apparently requires clarifying nowadays), but Zu/kka is becoming my least fave of the bunch due to fandom shenanigans.

Gonna be terrible at giving a take on this m/m fetish thing but first I do think there are plenty reasons to think that a m/f ship while not always fetishistic, can easily be sort of self inserty or wish fulfilment. (I think Zutara get's accused of this the most often).
But what I think makes stuff like m/m ships get thrown the fetish accusation is probably just the numbers in general. Like take Zukka: Before Netflix brought a revitalization to animated ATLA it was barely even a consideration in the fandom at large. Sure probably most people who shipped it could see parallels and reasons to find it fascinating but it generally wasn't known of. The second the series got put under the radar of modern fandom in 2020 the ship exploded by like probably over 2000% and is now rivaling Zutara as the #1 ATLA ship in places like Ao3 despite the 15 year headstart. (FF. net still keeps the total tally towards zutara but you get the idea).
So by sheer numbers and pacing Sokka and Zuko are now probably the most popular atla ship in 2024 so what changed? It's not like we got new insight between the two of them. It's not like the about of shared screen time increased or any new interactions were added. It's not like m/m fiction wasn't known about before then. But we did get a new audience and within that audience was a lot of girls who seem to have **really** got into m/m shipping only recently in the grand scheme of things with shows like BnHA, then Voltron, then ATLA once it got put under mainstream eyes again. So it's easy to think that a bunch of people in recent date got hooked on m/m like a drug and just by sheer population numbers and fandom in general it's probably going to be majority straight women leading the charge there. Queer folk who are into the ships too are just naturally going to be out numbered by sheer demographics and they may also have different motivations for the ship than the rest of the straight folk.
So when you have this perception of a some what recent legion of by default majority straight girls who've hopped from series to series, who then take the hottest boy characters and turn them into a pair of love birds (who from what I've heard anecdotally suffer from severe fanon re characterization), then it's really easy to get this negative perception that a lot of shippers aren't there primarily for any true merits of the ship but rather cause they're obsessed with taking boys and making them kiss.

Relaxation
Characters: Sokka x Zuko
Words: 970
Warnings: Marijuana usage, smut
A/N: This fic was inspired by a song about drugs/alcohol. And to be honest, this fic totally went in a different direction than I was expecting. XD
Tumblr media
Music softly played from the record player, filling the entire basement with the sounds of the music.
Sokka was hunched over the table, focused as he attentively filled and rolled the blunt, his boyfriend’s eyes watching as he licked the paper and sealing it off.
Sokka blushed a bit and handed Zuko the blunt, “I’ll let you start it.”
Zuko chuckled lowly and took the blunt, igniting the paper and the contents inside just the way he needed to before taking two drags. He closed his eyes as he exhaled, ready for the feeling to hit him as he passed it to Sokka.
Instead of grabbing it from him, Sokka gently pushed his hand back towards him, “Babe that’s yours.”
Zuko blinked, sitting up a bit more as he stared at him, “What?”
“Yeah,” he reiterated as he sat back. “I made it for you since you’ve been so stressed with finals. Just need to relax.”
“Alright.” He took a few more drags, melting back into the couch, letting the calming music wash over him.
Just as he was halfway through, Sokka finally took the blunt from him, taking a few hits.
Zuko snickered, “I thought it was mine?”
“Hey, it was calling my name!”
Sokka received an eye roll in return as he took a few more hits before passing it back.
In a matter of moments the blunt was finished off and the roach was snuffed out to be used later as the men relaxed into the couch.
White noise filled the room before finally stopped as the arm of the record player moved back to its resting point.
“Thank you for this, I really needed it.”
“But wait there’s more.” Sokka got up and changed the record around before coming back to the couch, pulling Zuko into his arms.
He melted into his boyfriend’s hold, enjoying the closeness and hearing the sound of his heart beating.
“What did I do to deserve you?”
“Accidentally knocking me down,” Sokka laughed. “But it’s okay, you redeemed yourself.” He placed a gentle kiss to his lips before smothering his face with kisses, paying a little more attention to his scar.
Zuko hummed and chuckled, “Are you seriously not satisfied right now? Do you need me too?”
He hummed, “I wouldn’t protest that, but right now I just wanna lay here with you in my arms and then get some food soon.”
He nodded and nuzzled into him, taking in his scent as he relaxed even further.
Sokka gently massaged his scalp, listening to his calming breaths. “I love you so much, Zuko.”
“I love you too Sokka.” Zuko adjusted and kissed him gently, cupping his face.
Sokka hummed softly.
“My turn to help you relax.”
Before Sokka could question what he meant, Zuko was already kissing his neck and grinding into Sokka.
He moaned lowly, shivering when Zuko had popped his shirt open, a button flying across the room.
“Katara can sew that back on later,” he said before traveling down, flicking his tongue over his pert nipples.
Sokka gasped, face beginning to redden. “What if your--”
“He’s not home.” Zuko then gently bit the bud, using his free hand to pinch his other nipple. Once he was satisfied he traveled even lower, kissing hips and smirking when he felt Sokka’s member twitching underneath his shorts. He carefully yanked them down and underneath his ass, seeing the wet mark on his boxers and smirking, “Already dripping for me?”
Sokka’s face darkened even more from his blush, “Yes, Sir.”
Zuko palmed at him and gave him another kiss before pulling his boxers down. He gently stroked him before licking the underside of his cock, tongue tracing his vein.
Sokka sucked in a breath, watching Zuko’s tongue flick over his slit and collecting his precum, humming happily at the taste.
Slowly Zuko took him into his mouth, cheeks hollowing around him as he began to bob along his length at a relaxing speed. He hummed around him as Sokka’s head fell back with a low moan.
Sokka bucked his hips, ready to plow into his boyfriend’s mouth, but Zuko’s hands quickly pinned him down. He whined in protest as Zuko pulled away.
“You are going to let me please you, understood? I will quicken up the pace as I please.”
“Yes, Sir.”
Zuko smirked and took him back into his mouth, sucking hard and bobbing quicker than he did before as he reached up and rolled Sokka’s nipples in between his finger and thumb.
Sokka shouted out in pleasure, making Zuko moan around him.
However the man soon whined as Zuko again pulled away.
Zuko’s hands traveled down as he gently spread him open, his tongue now attacking his puckered hole, gently diving in.
“Suck them,” he ordered as he gently placed his fingers in Sokka’s mouth.
Sokka obeyed, groaning as Zuko got back to pleasuring him.
Once Zuko’s fingers were wet enough he pulled them out and gently lined them up. He carefully pushed them in, groaning, “Fuck you’re so tight.”
Sokka whimpered gently, “Zuko please…”
He hummed and began to suck him off again as he thrust his fingers into him in perfect sync. Sokka’s moans filled the room, drowning out the music.
“Fuck, Zuko I’m gonna cum!”
Zuko moaned around him, pushing his fingers even deeper and brushing Sokka’s sweet spot. With a few more pumps of his finger’s Sokka’s hot seed was spilling out into his mouth.
“Oh god Zuko!”
He hummed and swallowed around him, collecting each drop his boyfriend offered him before pulling away and kissing him.
Sokka cupped his face, moaning at the taste of himself on Zuko’s lips, “I need you to properly fill me up.”
Zuko smirked, “Give it a few minutes then I’ll fill up the way you need me to, Baby.”

Hidden Amongst the Dragons
Summary:
Love and loyalty are often at odds in a world at war. For Sokka, there was never a choice to be made.
Sokka meets his soulmate just as he throws himself into the fray of the Hundred Year War at the side of his sister and Avatar Aang. Devastated to find his other half on the side of the Fire Nation, he stands steadfast in opposition to their tyrannical rule, even when he finds himself behind enemy lines.
Book Three: Love Amongst the Dragons
First Prev
Sokka spends his sixteenth birthday imprisoned in one of the many lavish rooms in the earth king’s besieged palace. He is pretty sure that the room in which he has been living for the past few days used to belong to a woman considering all of the dresses that line the closet. All of the occupants of the palace had been forcibly evicted when Ba Sing Se had fallen to Zuko and Azula. The Dai Li had torn down long stretches of the city’s outer wall, allowing Fire Nation troops to pour into the city. From what Sokka has learned by listening to the idle gossip of the remaining palace servants, there has been pushback from the citizens, but only in the Lower Ring. The Middle Ring had surrendered quietly, and there are plenty of recreant aristocrats in the Upper Ring already cozying up to Azula and other high-ranking Fire Nation officials.
The whole situation makes his blood boil. He cannot believe a city as great and well-armored as Ba Sing Se fell to three teenagers who had decided to infiltrate it on a whim. What’s worse is that they had impersonated the Kyoshi Warriors to do it, which means that Suki and her comrades are probably locked up in some spirits-forsaken prison in the Fire Nation.
Sokka’s other friends are surely suffering, as well. While Toph had managed to rescue the earth king and his pet bear from Ty Lee and Mai, he cannot imagine they are experiencing any sort of good luck given what had happened in the catacombs.
Aang had died, and the reincarnation cycle along with him.
Lying slumped on his borrowed bed with tears blurring his vision, Sokka wonders where his sister had chosen to bury the last avatar. Had she returned to Chameleon Bay and done a sea burial? Did she prepare an Air Nomad funeral? What was an Air Nomad funeral even like, he ponders. Aang had promised to tell them when they were old and gray and the information would have actually been appropriate to know.
He is pulled away from his thoughts when the rap of someone’s knuckles sounds at the door. Rolling his eyes, he stays put.
Every morning and night for the last three days, Zuko has come by in an attempt to coax Sokka out of his room. For whatever reason, Zuko keeps inviting him to breakfast and dinner with his sister and her friends, but Sokka has rebuffed him every single time. Zuko always sounds like a kicked seal-puppy whenever Sokka tells him to go away through the door, though why he thinks that Sokka would like to share a meal with his captors and someone who murdered his friend is beyond him.
This morning, he doesn’t even bother to respond, hoping that Zuko will take the hint without them having to engage in conversation. Unluckily for him, Zuko also tries something new this morning: he comes into Sokka’s room without permission.
Immediately, Sokka jumps up from the bed, taking up a defensive stance. Logically, he knows that Zuko is not going to attack him, but he reasons that he feels assaulted by Zuko’s mere presence. Glaring at Zuko, he takes in his current state of dress, so different from what it had been a few days ago. When before he had donned a somewhat grungy, brown and yellow smock, now he wears the finery of a prince. The clothing is superior even to that which he had worn in exile, which had mostly consisted of worn battle armor. Now, his robes are made of silk, colored in burgundy and mahogany. The ensemble is lined with various gold designs in the shapes of flames. To top it off, his boots are particularly baroque. The toes are pointed upwards, and gold runs all the way from his ankles to his knees.
“Look,” Zuko starts before Sokka can think of anything to say. His head is half-bowed as he speaks, as though he knows he is not in Sokka’s good graces. “I know you’re mad at me and you don’t want to talk right now—”
“No shit,” Sokka barks, cutting him off. “Why wouldn’t I be mad at someone who betrayed me so they could help their insane sister kill my friend, who was the last hope for the world!”
Taking the bait, Zuko responds to Sokka rather than proceeding with whatever he had come into the room to say. “I didn’t know Azula was going to do that, okay?”
Crossing his arms, Sokka yells, incredulous, “You didn’t know?”
Clenching his fists in typical-Zuko fashion, Zuko grits his teeth and mutters, “No. I only ever wanted to capture the avatar—”
“Well, what the fuck did you think was going to happen after that,” Sokka exclaims, reaching his boiling point. “Did you really think your dad was just going to indefinitely imprison the avatar?” Brow raised, he pretends to wait for Zuko’s answer to his rhetorical question. When no such answer comes, Zuko’s gaze pinned to the floor, he proceeds, “No! He was always going to kill him.”
Blowing out a rough breath, he concedes, “Alright, I’m sorry. I’m really, really sorry, but—”
“But what,” Sokka shouts, ferociously cutting Zuko off. He is panting—having been exerted by their argument—and glaring at him hard, as though daring him to say something more about Aang.
“Look,” Zuko says again, starting over from when he had come through the door. “I didn’t mean to upset you, but I only came in here because I wanted to tell you that we’re leaving today.”
“Great,” Sokka replies, feeling genuinely pleased, though he maintains the fury in his tone. “Bye, see you never.”
Frustration rippling across his face, Zuko amends, “No, I mean, we’re leaving today.”
Like a bucket of ice, the meaning of Zuko’s words crashes over him, and Sokka starts waving his arms to convey his objection. “No, no way. I am not going to the Fire Nation.”
Zuko takes a step closer to him. “Sokka, come on. Don’t make this harder than it has to be.”

For writing prompts maybe iroh finding out about zukki?
Yeah this response is like a month late but what are you going to do about it?
•••
In his defence, he hadn’t been aware it was a secret. Zuko may be an expert at stealth, but that certainly did not extend to his relationships. Iroh had seen the way he looked at Sokka and Suki, heard the way he talked to and about them - with poorly veiled adoration and excitement that filled him with joy to see his nephew so happy. The other two weren’t exactly masters of deception either, so he had genuinely thought it was common knowledge.
He’d known about Zuko and Sokka since the comet. They had both been nervous and distracted, but he’d noticed the looks and fleeting touches they had shared. Sokka had grabbed Zuko’s hands to talk to him at one point, both leaning in close for a quiet conversation. It was decidedly intimate, but soft and gentle in a way he rarely saw from Zuko.
Sokka and Suki were obviously a unit, and that had only briefly confused him before he figured out the dynamic. They were light and loving, and clearly adored each other. They were the epitome of young love, and realising that it extended to include Zuko too filled him with warmth.
He hadn’t noticed the depth of Zuko and Suki’s connection until recently, assuming that they were both involved with Sokka independently. But he had found them curled up asleep together one night while Sokka was away, peaceful and happy wrapped up in each other on the floor in Zuko’s rooms at the palace. Judging by their position, it looked like an abandoned attempt to get Zuko away from paperwork and to move to the bedroom to sleep.
The three apparently hadn’t been fooling anyone else, either. Toph has often come to their weekly tea sessions complaining about ‘gross sappy idiots’, and it didn’t take much effort to read between the lines. Katara has been overheard loudly bemoaning her ‘idiotic hopeless romantic brother’ spending all his time ‘carving stupid turtleducks and fans’ for his ‘even stupider partners’. Even Aang admitted getting sick of listening to endless drafts of poems and critiquing artwork.
The only ones who didn’t seem to have such complaints were Sokka, Suki and Zuko. They were far busier talking about their own lives, and unspecified romantic partner(s).
“Yes, uncle, I’m dating... a person. One person. Who is... not here right now. They’re, um, in the Earth kingdom. By the way, have you seen Suki’s new fans? She and Sokka designed them, they’re amazing. The fans! That they designed. Not Sokka and Suki. Not that Sokka and Suki aren’t amazing! They are - they’re amazing. Just not like that!”
What a mystery.
“Well this is certainly unexpected,” he lied through his teeth.
Zuko groaned. “How long have you known?”
“Honestly, I didn’t know you were hiding it from people.”
“Right,” Zuko sighed, “we’re really bad at this, aren’t we?”
“Nephew, love is a true and powerful emotion that many struggle to conceal, and-“
Zuko levelled him a glare.
Iroh sighed. “Yes, you’re really bad at hiding it.”

I felt nostalgic while rewatching, so here it is, Zuko, Saya (oc, Sokka and Suki's granddaughter) and Iroh II for a while on a very special, very sad day...
Saya and Iroh were standing in one of many hallways of Fire Nation Royal Palace. But this one was not just like any other hallways. Lord Zuko made it an alley of the heros, who helped win the war and organise the world afterwards. At first there were just statues. Then, the statues were completed with photos. The hallway was bringing up the most cherished memories. But it was also bringing up the sad ones, as many of those heroes passed away a long time ago. That was the reason Iroh and Saya were there that day.
Saya didn't like visiting this hallway. She didn't like looking at the photos of her grandparents, great-aunts and great-uncles. She didn't like these statues. Their resemblance to their models was striking. It felt like not only the statue, but the person themselves, pierced her with their look. But that day she figured the hallway was the best place to go. She stayed at the palace as an official guest of the Fire Lord, while she was on a break from her regular post. She was supposed to catch up with everyone available from the Academy and also give a few lectures there. She loved staying in the capital. But this day didn't bring her joy. Because this day was the anniversary of her grandfather's death.
Iroh put his arm around her shoulder and hugged her gently. He didn't say anything. He knew she hated it, so he just wanted to be there for her. Saya didn't hold back tears anymore and let them flow down her cheeks.
"I miss him terribly" she whispered. "Both of them." She looked over at the statue of Suki. She didn't have the courage to look at the photos of them together.
"I know" replied Iroh, kissing her head gently.
"I hate that they're gone."
"Too bad your mom isn't here, she'd probably know what to say better than me."
Saya smiled weakly.
"No, it's okay. We're used to not spending that time together. We don't see each other a lot, but I know it's a difficult day for her as well" she explained. "So, you don't have to say anything, I'm just glad you're here."
"Always by your side, honey." Smiled Iroh.
"Am I interrupting, general Saya?" someone spoke up, walking up to them. Saya wiped her tears with the sleeve.
"Lord Zuko, no, of course not" she answered, immediately getting back control over her voice. "I'm sorry, I'll just collect myself and I'm ready to do whatever you need from me."
Zuko smiled sourly.
"I'm not here on any official business, Saya" he explained, stopping next to her. "I'm here to pay the tribute to my best friend."
"Oh. I'm sorry, I didn't know."
Zuko sighed and looked at one of the photos. Tears appeared in his eyes as he saw himself and chief Sokka, his most trusted advisor, at an important meeting, one of the firsts. All of them stood silently for a while, until Zuko spoke up again.
"Iroh, would you give us a minute?"
Iroh was surprised but didn't refuse.
"Of course. You're gonna be alright?" he asked Saya, taking his arm from her shoulder. She nodded.
"Yes, thank you."
Iroh smiled and walked away. At first neither of them was talking. But finally Saya decided to ask a question.
"Do you miss him, uncle?"
A single tear flowed down his cheek, but he smiled weakly.
"Every single day" he answered quietly. "I miss both of them. They were my best friends and sometimes I still catch myself on thinking 'I'm going to ask Suki' or 'I can't wait to tell Sokka' and it lasts only a second but it hurts every time when I remind myself they're really gone."
Saya chuckled.
"I bet you actually have more right to miss them than I do" she said sadly.
"What are you talking about?"
"They were your best friends" she started explaining. "You went through so much together. I don't remember much of them."
"That doesn't mean you can't miss them as much as I do." Nodded Zuko. "What do you remember of them?"
Saya smiled.
"I remember how grandpa taught me to throw a boomerang. And how we would go fishing together. I remember him saying 'You know, Saya, one day you'll become a great sailor and you'll travel all over the world, I can feel it.' He wasn't wrong, though."
"Yes, Sokka never was." Smiled Zuko. "What else?"
"I remember how nana used to do me a Kyoshi warrior make up. I was so little and mom was so mad when I left the paint all over my clothes." Saya chuckled silently. "I remember she was the one who taught me how to braid my hair. She was always saying how much I'm worth and to never forget about it."
Zuko smiled.
"Yes, that sounds a lot like Suki. She used to do my haircuts too, you know? No one else after her could do it so well."
Saya looked over at Zuko and smiled. He laid his hand on her shoulder.
"Listen, little one. I've told that once Yue, your mother, and now I'm going to tell it you" he started. "They not actually gone, you know? I see them all the time. In you. And they would be so proud of you, I'm sure of that. They were so happy when you were born." He smiled, remembering those happy days when they were all still together. A whole group.
"And do you think they are now?" asked Saya. Zuko raised his eyebrows in question, so she explained. "Happy."
Zuko thought for a moment before answering.
"I think they are. And I have to say, although I quite enjoy living, I can't wait to reunite with them. One way or another."
Saya smiled.
"Thank you, uncle Zuko. This day is never easy but you actually made it a lot better."
Zuko nodded.
"I could say the same about you." He looked over at the statue and took one of the not flamed candles. "Do you want to light it with me?"
Saya nodded and took out a box of matches from a pocket. She lit a candle and Zuko placed it at its place. They stood there silently for another while, until Saya spoke up again.
"You know, maybe I didn't know them so well, but I think they would be proud of you too, uncle."
Zuko looked at her, completely surprised. But then, he smiled and tears showed up in his eyes.
"Thank you, Saya."

"Zuko? Do you know which of these rooms was your dad's?" Katara asked, emerging from the house. "Sokka says he doesn't want one with 'murder-y vibes.'"
"My father hasn't been here in over a decade," Zuko began, turning back to the entry of the house. "It is unlikely that there are… that…"

Okay I admit I came up with a concept of time travel where old Zuko (who will not be based off LoK) goes back to being 10 years old right before his mother disappearing and he's just- well fuck it I'll raise my baby sister.
It'd start with the fire siblings playing Pai Sho, both old rags, and they tease themselves about their moves in the game and how it reflects on their respective personalities. (Like how professor X in chess always plays the peons first and protects the king and magneto just goes like fuck it my first move is endangering myself as a bait - I may be confusing fandoms but whatever).
They have tea and walk around the palace, eventually stopping to feed the turtleducks. Azula admits she always wanted to be like this with him. Close, warm, but never had a chance to because she didn't know how to do it.
ANYWAYS, Zuko goes back in time after dying lmao yes. He says fuck you to everyone who antagonizes his lil baby sis and protects her bc she deserves love and kindness. I am torn between having him run away with her at age of 13 or being banished and scarred but for an entirely different reason, Azula-related of course because I'm pretending this fic is about Zuko just to bait his stans.
What happens next? I can't write because I have so many different possibilities that my brain hurts. They could go to the Earth Kingdom and end up as Toph's maid and reader, they could be adopted by the Freedom Fighters (named as Dao and Bluna - pun intended) (and yes I just love the concept of Dao Samurai Zuko and Ninjazula so this is my favourite route)
And Zuko starts to loose some parts of his memory of the past life but he keeps his old mind and slang. Azula is the brains even then, and kind of becomes the leader of the FF.
OR, they could end up in the South Pole, where baby Sokka and Katara are just growing up and being adopted into Kanna and Hakoda's family (they could change names here too, just so to Bluna and Dao becomes canon in my mind)
OOOR they could become FRICKING PIRATES!
OOOOR they could KILL Ozai in that Agni Kai TOGETHER, and just go "well we won it together so we might as well rule together".
OOOORRRRR they could STOP Ozai from trying to get the throne and Mom never leaves!
SO MANY POSSIBILITIES

Y/N jolted forward, rolling off the dusty mattress and onto the rough concrete with a soft thud. Rubbing the sleep out of their eyes, it took a few moments to recollect the events of yesterday.
Northern Air Temple…
Probing Sokka’s ear…
No, no, rewind just a little bit, Y/N yawned and arched their back to relieve the aching pain on their spine.
Shit…
Zuko
-
The supposed skilled firebender twisted and jutted out his limbs to release any sort of flickering flames. But alas, there was none, so Zuko released a sigh of defeat. He thumped his forehead onto the stone wall in an attempt to cool down his fiery system.
Aang witnessed Zuko’s unravelling state. He pitied him, he really did. Despite the weeks of the firebender’s hunt among his friends, well specifically him, there was something that nagged Aang. Something was telling him that he couldn’t let Zuko deflate.
Y/N gave him a chance, I know that I should too.
Aang traced the crumbling stone column he sat on with his finger, trying to find the right words to disperse to Zuko’s drooping figure. He could practically hear the thoughts in Zuko’s twisting mind.
Hopping down from his seat, Aang offered, “Thanks for showing me the ropes!”
The firebender violently whipped his head back to meet Aang’s gentle eyes, “Don’t patronize me! You know what my fire is supposed to look like!” A burst of blue fire circled around Zuko, casting a grim glow over his face.
Aang’s eyes grew wide, he stumbled back to escape the flames slithering towards his feet.
A whimper caught his ear.
“Y/N!” Aang shouted over the raging fire twisting around Zuko’s limbs who stood limp, subjugating to the uncontrollable.
A familiar sensation of warmth pricked Y/N’s forehead, traveling down to their arms and winding around their legs. Their heartbeat sounded through their ears, a gentle drum soon picking up its speed.
Drumming…
Drumming…
Another heartbeat echoed through their head.
Beating steadily to their own.
Aang… is that you?
The wind picked up, swirling the clouds to and fro to gather together a dreary mass of gray. The pulsating gusts thrusted stone columns and pieces of wood around the Northern Air Temple as if it was a lifeless doll.
It encouraged Zuko’s crackling fire to size him up. He was being eaten by his own flames.
The sky above matched the state of the two Avatars and the firebender throwing his own fit wedged between them. It was a commendable horrid sight that drew the Gaang forward.
“SOKKA!” Katara’s screech ripped her throat. She led Toph (who spat out Katara's hair out of her mouth) by the arm, but the pair struggled to reach Sokka who swatted debris around himself.
“The same thing happened when Aang saw Gyatso…” Sokka mumbled to himself in realization. He was brought back from his thoughts when Toph tugged on his tunic, motioning him to lead the way.
As the three crawled on all fours towards the raging fire to avoid impact from debris, Sokka shouted to his sister. “YOU NEED TO COOL DOWN YOUR BOYFRIEND!”
Katara halted to give him a stern glare, “HE’S NOT MY BOYFRIEND!”
“HE’S TALKING ABOUT AANG!” Toph replied.
“WELL YOU NEED TO CALM DOWN YOUR Y/N!” Katara retorted, while Toph snorted.
“Y/N’S NOT MINE- UGH NEVERMIND…” Sokka grumbled, “If you need anything to be done right, you gotta do it yourself.” He slowly raised himself up to his feet, his body teetering this way and that from the strong wind.
Sokka sprinted to the nearest column from Y/N to protect him from any unexpected outbursts that could occur. He peered at Y/N, to his surprise wasn’t there. Craning his neck up, there they were, floating at a dangerously towering height.
Y/N’s body resembled Aang’s, hovering above the ground, arms and legs spread out like a starfish. The siblings' eyes and mouth emanated a blinding blue light, similar to Zuko’s flames that continued to engulf him.
“Y/N YOU GOTTA SNAP OUTTA THIS!” Sokka pleaded, “PLEASE! YOU’RE HURTING YOURSELF!” Despite the ongoing sound of the wind, he heard footsteps treading towards the fire.
Katara dug her feet into the ground. She stood in front of Zuko, close enough to feel the heat, but far enough to not be touched. Hands raised up to either side of her, she heaved in a deep breath.
Into the nostrils…
Through the throat…
Settling into the lungs…
AND OUT!
Katara brought her hands together with a loud clap, which the clouds matched with the sudden onslaught of rain that was brought upon them. It quieted down Zuko’s blue fire, soon dissipating into mist. He fell down to his knees with a hard thud.
“NOW!” Katara poured her heart out into her confident voice.
A rumbling erupted as rocky beams shot up from the ground, catching the falling limp bodies of Aang and Y/N.
“Gotcha!” Toph sighed in exasperation and relief.
-
Cool water leached onto Y/N, who laid sprawled out onto a makeshift table made of stone next to Aang, drawing out the overwhelming energy from the outburst of the morning’s events. It was sun down now. Orange and purple hues scratched the sky, painting the Northern Air Temple similar colors.
Y/N moaned at the chilling sensation languidly crawling down from their head.
The beating drum slowed down to a steady thumping.
But Y/N could still hear another beat.
AANG, IS THAT YOU?
The siblings shot forward, heaving deep for air, startling Katara, causing her to splash the water onto the ground.
“What just happened…” Aang and Y/N mumbled.
“YOU TELL ME!” Sokka gripped his hair tightly, causing the elastic to snap. “BOTH OF YOU WENT SWOOSH, THEN ZUKO WENT BLAM-”
Y/N clamped their ears, pushing and scrunching it in an attempt to drown out the sounds.
There was too much.
The crackling of Toph’s nervous knuckles pricked Y/N’s eardrums. Y/N’s eyes darted to Sokka’s heaving chest who continued to explain the outburst with flailing arms, then onto Katara’s lips that spoke soft words, giving the opposite effect onto them.
There was too much.
Beads of sweat trickled steadily down Aang’s forehead. His hand clawing at the nape of his neck, his throat tightening, threatening to close. His fingers traveled to his robe, gripping, then unclenching the creased fabric furiously.
“S-Stop…” Aang whispered.
“I SAID STOP!” the Gaang was startled by the siblings' simultaneous shout.
For once, everyone quieted down, only the gentle chirping and fluttering of birds was heard.
One…
Y/N’s eyelids smoothed down over their seering eyes.
Two…
Aang breathed in heavily.
Three…
The Avatars breathed out and shot open their eyes.
𝔼𝕟𝕕𝕟𝕠𝕥𝕖 | Y’all thot this was gonna be fun and games huh??

If There Was One Thing That Could Make Me Go ‘Spoilerphobia’ Good…
Although I generally don’t give a damn about spoilers and in fact sometimes seek them out, there’s a point the anti-spoiler crowd makes that I agree with. When you know how things are going to turn out, your viewing experience tends to change from “first-time discovery” to “analytical repeat viewing”. Suddenly, you’re not watching a story unfold, wondering how it turns out, but interpreting it in the view of the ending, assuming that everything that precedes it ties into and sets it up—because it should. Now, this doesn’t matter all that much if the thing you’re watching is internally consistent and actually does set up the conclusion.
If it doesn’t, well…
So anyway, if there’s something my ATLA rewatch highlighted to me, it’s how confusing and trippy it was to watch the show as a thoroughly-spoiled presumed Cataanger-to-be.
Here are my thoughts from eight years ago as I viewed the story for the very first time, knowing that Cataang was endgame and expecting the story to actually conform to the ship.
The Boy in the Iceberg
Tumblr media
“If no one told me Cataang was endgame, I’d have guessed from this single shot. A story about a hero saving the world, and when the hero meets the main female character it’s shown like this? Doesn’t exactly spell ‘trope breaker’ to me. I’m glad TPTB are committing to this ship and developing it from the get go.”
Tumblr media
“Though I don’t understand the necessity for the age/maturity gap, or for it to be highlighted in this way. It says quite a lot that while Aang views himself as a child and seems to have lots of growing up to do, Katara needs to be reminded she’s still a kid and almost immediately assumes the role of the Gaang’s resident caretaker.”
The Warriors of Kyoshi
“After a few episodes of pretty heavy stuff and Katara interacting with it while fully embracing her motherly role, we’re getting a filler with lots of space for developing the relationship in a romantic way... yet nothing happens. All pursuing is decidedly done by Aang who seems desperate for Katara’s attention which she doesn’t give to him until the end when it’s framed like a mum lovingly watching a nagging son. Neither does Katara recognise Aang’s obsession with fame for what it is—a desire for her to be smitten with him, just a little bit. Not even the opportunity to display some jealousy on her part is seized as she seems more annoyed with his vanity than put out by being sidelined.”
Jet
“Alright, I guess Cataang is going to be the ‘get out of the friendzone’ type of romance because this is getting ridiculous. It’s been ten episodes and so far not a single sign of romantic interest on Katara’s part. Yet there is absolutely no doubt the girl’s crushing on Jet hard and itching to pursue it, war or no war, so it’s not like there’s any ambivalence in terms of her feelings for Aang—they’re not romantic at this point, period. I wonder what Aang will do to become a blip on Katara’s luv radar.”
The Fortuneteller
“So we get a romantic shot of Katara from Aang’s POV, a hilarious romantic shot of Aang from Meng’s POV, no indication that Katara perceives Aang as a romantic possibility at all, and the whole episode is about unrequited crushes, failing to catch your crush’s attention, needing to move on, and destiny being bullshit. Yup, definitely the ‘get out of the friendzone’ type of romance.”
Tumblr media
“OK, I’m confused because there is some thematic clashening going on. The point of the episode so far has been about not minding prophecies and that everyone’s the master of their own destiny, yet Katara’s marriage to a powerful bender is apparently bang on the money? So what is the story telling me, that a) Katara learned nothing about her crippling reliance on fate? Or that b) she’ll pursue Aang, of whose existence she needed to be reminded, to fulfil Aunt Wu’s prophecy? I don’t think I like this. On the other hand, the romance is beginning at last. It’s now impossible for Katara not to factor this revelation into her dealings with Aang, and since Cataang’s endgame, there’s no way she won’t see him in a new light. We’re totally getting lots of pining, aborted touches, and blushing, Toph’s-crush-on-Sokka style, baby.”
The rest of Book I—no sign of Katara’s emotional investment in a romantic Cataang whatsoever
The Cave of Two Lovers
“I have no idea why this episode exists. Not only does the legend of lovers from enemy villages not fit Cataang AT ALL, but the whole story is a thinly veiled excuse for getting the two of them to kiss—and they don’t? And Katara’s so weirdly utilitarian about it? You know, for a girl who was validated in her obsession with destiny and informed she could very well end up marrying this guy, she’s acting pretty nonchalant about possibly kissing him for the first time and forgets about it the second the plot stops hinting at it. So what was the point? Christ, I hope the experience at least finally gets Katara to reflect on her relationship to Aang.”
The rest of Book II—no sign of Katara’s emotional investment in a romantic Cataang whatsoever
Return to Omashu
Tumblr media
“OK, I really need her to verbalize her feelings once because ffs.”
City of Walls and Secrets
Tumblr media
“I could so do with a single moment of Katara reacting to Aang in a similar way and suppressing those feelings. Hell, being infatuated with his power as The Fortuneteller seeded would be enough at this point because I’m being fed nothing.”
The Guru
“My post-catholic brain has no idea what this episode is saying about Aang’s feelings for Katara. Are Avatars as an entity supposed to live like hermits, with no romantic relationships whatsoever, otherwise they won’t ever master the Avatar State and will only go into it at random? Wait, that can’t be correct—Roku is in a loving marriage yet can glow up at will, meaning that romantic love clearly isn’t an obstacle. So what, is Pathik full of crap? Well, no, because everything he teaches Aang works, up to and including his advice to let go of Katara. So what about Aang’s love is such a problem? I’m also pretty confused about Pathik’s likening of the Air Nomads to Katara. Like yeah, the love and belonging Aang had with the Nomads survived and was transformed, but isn’t Cataang supposed to be a romance, albeit one that’s so far failed to manifest? I didn’t get romance from Aang’s relationship to any airbender. I don’t get this.”
The Headband
“FINALLY, a clear sign of Katara’s romantic feelings for Aang. And it took only 41 prior episodes where she either treats him like a baby, or has to be reminded by outside circumstances that he exists as a romantic option, so it’s not like there was much setup. I would also appreciate if Katara didn’t realise she’s attracted to Aang in the very same episode where she literally pretends to be his mum but beggars can’t be choosers. I now feel pretty confident in saying that I’m getting Katara blushing and pining like crazy at last.”
The romance doesn’t come up again for the next seven episodes
The Day of Black Sun
Tumblr media
“WAIT, SHE WAS INTERESTED IN THE HEADBAND! She displayed romantic attraction! WTF happened? Why does she look like someone who was just violated by her sonion? OK, I need a resolution, I need them to address this, have a conversation, something!”
The romance doesn’t come up again for the next seven episodes
The Ember Island Players
“So we’re officially pretending The Headband didn’t happen, I guess. The only thing that surprises me at this point is my lack of surprise. Anyway, what’s the nature of Katara’s confusion? Because with four episodes left to go until the ship becomes endgame, I’d like more specificity as to her feelings since this line reads less like ‘I’m confused because war/I have no clue what my feelings are exactly’ and more like ‘I don’t know how to let you down gently/I had no idea you felt this way or what to do with it.’ Address this, please!!”
The romance doesn’t come up again for the 99% of the next four episodes
Avatar Aang
Tumblr media
“They turned my girl into a golddigger. Fucking end me.
So what I’m getting from this is either a) Katara wasn’t interested in Aang until he became the best candidate for Aunt Wu’s prophecy, or b) Aang was originally supposed to recognise his one-sided puppy crush for what it was and overcome it.
I feel dirty.
Anyway, I heard people are into Zuko x Katara, maybe there’s some decent brain bleach about that.”

im pretty sure nobody wants this content but:
aged up, no bending atla x fallout 4 crossover!!!
(spoilers for some atla and fo4 stuff obviously, and in sukis part i rant abt the ending where ur against the brotherhood, so major spoilers for that too)
lets start with katara
katara is a minuteman, no lets be real shes the goddamn general, preston took one look at her and immediately knew she'd protect the people of the commonwealth with all she had
elder maxon is actually scared of her, which is why he refuses to let her on the prydwen so none of his underlings see him fold under her stare
shes probably the first minuteman that hancock like actually truly respects bc he knows shes 100% abt the ppl and goodneighbors motto is literally "of the people for the people"
katara is a probably a bit conflicted about him at first bc u know hes a bit ruthless for her taste, but she can see his heart's in the right place
she definitely helped marcy long with her grief and turned her anger into smth productive, aka marcy is now probably a high ranking minuteman
sokka
def a railroad agent (i read alchemy, sue me)
him and tinker tom are the best buddies and yes sokka got convinced to drink his weird serum thing, stop bringing it up!!
god just the crazy inventions those two would cook up, they'd probs scare the shit out of the institute
on topic of the institute, theres probably like at least one abduction attempt from them a month but hes not only smart but a badass too
hes also one of the only people dr. amari is actually nice to and will routinely rescue him from irmas relentless flirting
he definitely fanboys with kent collony over the shroud
i feel like deacon would drive him mad, because on one hand he gets the secrecy and that he doesn't want anyone to get too close but also deacs, my man u cant shut everyone out with ur lies
okay now im thinking abt them bonding over their dead gfs and am sad
when he meets nick he has to hold back soooo hard to not ask invasive questions, bc nick is basically a walking insight into the institute, but hes alao a person who sokka respects and really doesn't wanna be an ass to
toph
also with the railroad(but shes a heavy ofc), probably mostly bc shed get more action there
sokka and tinker tom def made her some really cool gadget à la seismic sense so shes still a BEAST
she can also hear a raider ambush/lurking wildlife before anyone else and if shes not with anyone who needs to avoid that kinda stuff she pulls out her trusty missile launcher and makes quick work of her enemies
probably participates in cage matches at the combat zone and raiders shit their pants when they see her
toph is either dating glory or cait or both, cant decide, just badass wlw
or maybe fahrenheit 🤔, i mean the only refrence of tophs type we have is that she mightve had a crush on sokka who is not only strong but smart and u cant tell me fahr isnt smart, she might only have like 5 lines but at least one of them is abt chess which is a common shorthand for intelligence and she is undoubtedly a badass so yes toph and fahr! never thought id think of those two as a ship but here we are haha
zuko
is the silver shroud, you can't change my mind he's a righteous theatre kid ofc he's the shroud
suki
also a minute man, probably kataras second in command
shes the one training the minutemen at the castle
danse tried so desperately to recruit her but suki is too smart to fall for the bos' bullshit
probably plays into his whole spiel tho to get an inside look at the bos and takes them down from the inside
and not by blowing the ship up wtf there are kids on the prydwen what the fuck why cant u get them out beforehand??? why is that the only option to get the bos out of the commonwealth???? they steal poor farmers crops ffs i want them gone! WITHOUT killing innocent children that are being indoctrinated what the fuck
aang
im actually having a really hard time to imagine aang in fo4 bc u know its a biiit violent for a pacifist monk but i really dont wanna just make him a farmer or some boring shit, its just that stuff usually needs killing in some way in fo4
okay nvm i can def picture him on the island mediating that whole conflict between arcadia, the children of the atom and far harbor
oh god aang finding out how dima kept the 'peace' would be a brutal fucking scene, i dont wanna spoil too much if possible but aang would def feel really betrayed by dima
i can see aang arriving at the island and really trying to make everyone understand that dima only wants arcadia to be safe and left alone and i have no idea how he would actually deal with dima once the truth comes out but fuuck, bending or not aang def entered the avatar state there
but just to be clear he still protects arcadia, just bc its built by smn who thinks the ends justify the means doesnt mean that synths dont deserve to live in fucking peace for once
also aang would absolutely adore erikson and his puppies ^^
but back to the commonwealth
aang would for sureee advocate against the mind wipes the railroad makes and try to find other ways to help synths
he probs cannot deal with desdemonia saying that erasing the synths memory and identity is the only way to keep them safe, aang knows what loss means and he wont stand for it
and i can see him do a lot of the actual building in the settlements and helping all those small communities to flourish
now for the crack, as in i dont think this is in character but i thought of it so now yall have to read abt it:
the fire nation is in nuka world, also there is no overboss per se bc except for like 3 lines we know nothing of colter
ozai leads the operators, but also kinda everyone, so basically the overboss
post breakdown, pre redemption azula leads the disciples
zhao leads the pack bc like mason hes an animal and i hate him ^^
gage is dead bc unfortunately ozai isnt dumb, altho ozai was dumb enough to underestimate zuko when he literally told him his plan to join the gaang, but then again gage didnt like colter bc he didnt get shit done and unfortunately ozai does get shit done so gage is probably delighted :(
if anyone actually read this and wants to add on pleaseee do!!!

any examples of ships that fit those tropes you like?
LJKDHSKJFh yeah! Heads up, this isn’t gonna be limited to OPM, I’ll label any non-OPM ship with the source! This is by no means an exhaustive list though.
Character A finds Character B annoying until they don’t, usually after Character B has been gone for an unusual amount of time and Character A finds they miss them???
Marisol x Mikey-Mr. Iglesias (Listen. The show has its issues but Marisol and Mikey have my HEART)
Seamista-She Ra
Hardison x Eliot-Leverage
Jazekiel-The Librarians
Bubbline-Adventure Time
Batarou
Genos x Garou
Listen I don’t go here (yet) but whatever Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji have going on in The Untamed...Yeah I ship that.
Childhood friends. That’s it. That’s the tweet.
Catradora-She Ra
Glimbow-Also She Ra.
Marisol x Mikey-Mr. Iglesias
Mai Lee-Avatar: The Last Airbender
Enemies to friends to lovers (sometimes with a friends to enemies to friends to lovers twist).
Batarou
Catradora-She Ra
Scorfuma-She Ra
Zukka-Avatar: The Last Airbender
Alternately: Zukki-Avatar: The Last Airbender (is this Zuko x Sokka x Suki? it’s possible.)
Whatever Glinda and Elphaba have going on in Wicked
Note: I love this trope, but redemption arcs are rarely well executed imho, so it’s less populated than it could be.
Characters A and B’s friendly banter keeps getting flirtier, but neither of them really mean anything by it. Right? Wrong.
Hardison x Eliot-Leverage
Zukka-Avatar: The Last Airbender
Embodiment of Unhinged Untitled Goose Game energy x Voice of Reason™
Mumensai. (What I like about this is who has the unhinged energy and who is the voice of reason flip flops every ten seconds.)
Hance-V*ltron (LISTEN. I might not have had good taste in shows but I stand by this ship.)
Sukka-Avatar: The Last Airbender
Micah x Angella-She Ra
Glimbow-She Ra
Basically raising a family together at this point but it’s Totally Platonic
Batarou
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji-The Untamed
Character A is completely oblivious to the fact Character B is flirting with them because “oh they’re just being nice!”
Mumensai.
Really any Mumen ship.
Catradora-She Ra
Rivals.
Batarou
Bubbline-Adventure Time
Sonic x FF
Zukka-Avatar: The Last Airbender
Jazekiel-The Librarians
Sweet and earnest character x Asshole
Speedal
Sweet and earnest character x Sweet and earnest character
Hallura-V*ltron
Frog and Toad-Frog and Toad. Peeled back the gay veil for childhood me.
TTMumen
Scorfuma-She Ra
Glimbow-She Ra
Character A has been in love with Character B for years and everyone, including Character B knows this but they’re both content with just being friends until a mutual friend says something funny and makes Character A laugh, and Character B is watching and just Realizes™
Marisol x Mikey-Mr. Iglesias
Dumbasses. (Often smart dumbasses)
Hardison x Eliot-Leverage
Jazekiel-The Librarians
Zukka-Avatar: The Last Airbender
Catradora-She Ra
Batarou
Mumensai
Red and Blue gays.
Zukka-Avatar: The Last Airbender
Korrasami-Legend of Korra (Ok full disclosure: I never watched LoK. But Korrasami,,, good,,,)
Kagaminette-Miraculous Ladybug (I uh. No longer watch the show but they are very cute and would be a great endgame if Thomas wasn’t a coward)
Character A flirts with Character B to fluster them but when Character B flirts back, they panic and freeze
Malec-Shadowhunters (The TV show, not the books, we don’t acknowledge the books in this house)
Batarou
Zukka-Avatar: The Last Airbender
Catradora-She Ra

Water Attracts Lightning // Zuko X Kasami (OC) [FF]
Kasami’s P.O.V
It’s been about 4 days since Zuko brought me in. It’s a good thing his healers are of high level experience, if not I’d probably be a lot worse off right now. I still get sharp pains in my side at the site of my cut, but all of my bruises and burns have been healed.
“Kasami?” Zuko opens the door and peaks his head in. “Are you up?”
“Yeah, just give me one second.”
I finish brushing my hair, along with braiding one loose strand on the side. I put my hair behind my shoulders as it falls down to my waist in slightly curly waves. I put on my water tribe outfit, but I quickly realize that its way too hot in the firenation to be wearing these fleece covered North Pole clothes.
“Actually, give me a few minutes.” I laugh sheepishly as I grab the scissors.
I cut off one of the long sleeves of my white water tribe top. I crop it and put it on, the bottom resting a few inches above my belly button. I take the warm fleece off of my blue and white skirt and cut a slit up the right side. I put on my necklace and my traditional tribe bracelets, one on my upper arm and two around my wrist.
I put on my most prized possession, an Air Nomad bracelet that Aang gifted me for my birthday. He knew how much I loved Air Nomads and their culture. I guess thats why Aang and I formed a really special bond. I love all of my friends but he was there for me when no one else was. I consider Aang my best and closest friend. I spent almost all of my childhood reading ancient Nomad scrolls, scriptures, and books. Besides training with water and swordsman masters, of course. It was amazing to have someone else, a real Nomad, to be best friends with.
I hope Aang and the others are okay.
Suddenly, an idea pops into my head.
I walk out to see Zuko waiting outside my door, he studies me, glancing up and down before speaking.
“Took you long enough.” He says, leaning against the wall.
“Well I wouldnt of had to remake all of my clothes if it wasnt like 90 degrees here.”
I cross my arms across my chest and blow a strand of hair out of my face.
“Let’s go.” He begins, “We have a lot to do today.”
“Actually, I need to do something first.”
Zuko groans and runs his hand through his hair.
“What is it?” He snaps harshly, clearly annoyed.
“I need to enter the spirit world.”
“The spirit world?!” He shouted, an exasperated expression on his face. “Why do you need to go into the spirit world?”
“Okay well, first of all, calm down and stop shouting.” I started, unamused by his behavior. “Since Aang and I are the only ones out of our group who can enter the spirit world, we promised to find each other there if we ever got separated.”
Zuko massaged his forehead and sighed deeply.
“Kasami, we don’t have time for this!”
“I’m going to do it either way, Zuko.” I glanced away sadly and looked at the floor. “They probably think I’m dead. I have to let them know I’m here and that I’m coming for them.”
“Fine, but make it quick.” He began walking away. “If your not back to the ship in an hour, you can find your own way back.”
Asshole.
I jogged back into his villa, and decided to go sit on the beach to meditate. I sat down, closed my eyes, and pressed my fists together. I focused on my breath for a while, and in a few minutes I notice the landscape around me was beginning to change. My soul felt like it was lifting out of my body, although it seems scary, it always felt the most amazing during the transition from the real world, to the spirit world.
I opened my eyes to see that I wasn’t at the beach anymore. The sound of waves turned in to the sound of leaves and branches flowing peacefully in the wind.
“Come on Aang, where are you?”
I made my way over to our favorite spot, a flower garden beneath a giant bonsai tree. The four nations’ symbols carved into it’s trunk. I sat and waited, until suddenly, I heard footsteps nearing. My eyes shot over to the sound, a familiar face with blue tattoos making his way towards me.
“AANG!”
A huge smile plastered across my face, I ran as fast as I could over to him. His arms already open, waiting to receive his hug.
“Im so glad you’re alive, Kasami.” He peered down at me with a concerned but elated expression.
“Are you guys okay?” I walked around him, searching for cuts or bruises. “Are any of you hurt?”
“We aren’t hurt too bad, don’t worry. If Sokka would just shut up once in a while maybe he wouldn’t get in trouble so often...” He trailed off, rubbing the back of his neck.
I balled my fists and my jaw clenched.
“Aang, please don’t lie to me. Tell me what’s happening to you guys.”
He sighed and glanced down at the floor.
“Katara can barely stand and Sokka’s got bruises all over him.”
“And you?” Tears well up in my eyes as I look up at him.
“They keep me chi blocked. I can’t reach the Avatar state.” He began, his voice quivering and tears beginning to fall down his face. “I’m the Avatar and I can’t even save them.”
“Aang, please. Do not blame yourself.”
“How can I not? I’m supposed to bring balance and peace to the world.”
“Everything is going to be okay. Thanks to you I made it out of there alive. Well, just barely, but Zuko found me and-“
“Wait, Zuko?”
“I fell off of Appa trying to escape and I fell in to the woods on Ember Island.”
“Where does Zuko fall into this?”
“Well he was on vacation and he happened to be out at the time. He found me and brought me back to his villa. Zuko and his healers basically nursed me back to health.”
“Fire Lord Zuko? The one gave you your sca-“
“Yes Aang.” I interrupt his sentence, not wanting him to finish it.
“Speaking of Zuko, I have to go.” I wrapped my arms around Aang and squeezed him tightly. “If Im not back at the ship soon, I’ll get left behind.”
Aang hugged me back and squeezed me even tighter.
“Im coming for you guys. I’m going to get all of you out of there,” I let go of him and put my hand on his shoulder. “I promise.”
We said our goodbyes and I returned to the real world. I opened my eyes to see Zuko sitting right in front of me.
“Z-zuko?”
“Oh, uh, sorry! I was just making sure nothing happened to your body while you were in there.”
“Like how Katara was protecting Aang the night of the North Pole invasion before you showed up and stole him?” I remarked sarcastically.
“Hey! I said I was sorry for that!”
A slight smile tugged at the corner of his lips, before I started laughing at him.
He got up, dusting the sand off his clothes. He reached his hand down to me, offering to help me up.
“I can get up myself, thanks.”
I rose up off the ground and dusted my own skirt off.
We stood in silence for what seemed like forever, just staring at each other.
“Ahem.” I cleared my throat and broke eye contact. “We should probably, uh, get going.”
“O-oh, yeah. We have a lot of preparation to do.” He gestured at me to walk with him as he started making his way back to the ship.
“Lets go.”
Zuko’s P.O.V
Kasami stands in front of me, the sunset perfectly hitting her face. I never noticed how beautiful her eyes were. She’s got two different colors. Her right eye a light shade of blue, matching the Water Tribe insignia on her necklace. Her left, a vibrant and light shade of green, like the leaves of a white dragon flower. My favorite. The sun only enhancing their color, they continue intrigue me. Sadly she looks away. I seemed to have gotten a little lost in her eyes, but I quickly return to reality when she clears her throat.
“We should probably, uh, get going.”
“O-oh, yeah. We have a lot of preparation to do.” I add as I begin walking back to the ship, Kasami trailing close behind.
We’ve been on the ship for a couple hours now. We haven’t spoken a single word to each other. I go out on the deck to find her playing around with some water. I catch her smiling as she whips it around her body, the water flowing gracefully wherever she points her hand. I make my way over to her spot on the floor, but as soon as she notices me her smile fades.
“Have you heard of blood bending?” I asked, taking a seat right in front of her.
“Yes.” She raises her brow. “Why do you ask?”
She glances at me with suspicion.
“I’m only asking because It could help us a lot. You know, when we’re trying to save our friends.”
“I’ve only ever tried it once, but I’m still trying to figure out if it was a dream or not.” She answers, rubbing her temples.
“Why don’t you try it?”
“Well, I don’t really have anyone to try it on.”
“Try it on me.”
“Zuko, are you crazy?” She looks at me, clearly distressed. “I’m not going to blood bend you!”
“Kasami, do you have any idea how powerful we could be together? You have to try!”
“T-Together?”
“I mean, uh, when we rescue the others. Ya know, you with your blood bending and me with my lightning?”
I point my finger up at the sky, a tiny bolt of lightning sprouting from it, buzzing sightly with electricity. The color immediately drained from Kasami’s skin and terror overtook her face. She backed up, her eyes wide with fear.
“K-Kasami? What’s wrong?”
I get up and walk over to her. I reach my hand out but she stumbles back till she hits the railing of the ship.
“Don’t!” She yells, turning away from me and putting her face in her hands.
“Please..Please don’t d-do that again.”
“Don’t do wh-“
“The light...the lightning.”
Her voice and her hands were shaking, she sounded like she was on the verge of tears.
“oh.” I whispered as I peered down at my hands, ashamed that I had just scared her so badly.
“I promise you, I wont ever do it again.” I said in a hushed tone. “I know you might not believe it, but I am so, so sorry for hurting you, Kasami.”
She looked back at me, her eyes were glossy and full of tears. She was too full of pride to ever let them fall in front of some one else.
“I’m so sorry.”
My own tears threatened to fall. I looked down at my feet. Suddenly, I hear her walking towards me. Kasami stood only a couple inches away from me. She looked up at me and smiled. I took in the beautiful sight in front of me. Her eyes sparkled in the moonlight as she looked right into my own.
“I want to believe you, I really do.”
“It’s okay if you don’t now. I’ll prove it to you.”
Immediately after finishing my sentence, she flung her arms around me pulling me into a tight hug. I wrapped my own arms around her and pulled her in tighter, letting a tear fall from my cheek.
“I guess I can give you chance, figuring how you saved my life and all.” She whispered into my shoulder.
I pulled away slightly as we held each other. She raises her hand to my face and caresses her thumb across my scar.
“I know I’ll never be able to make it up to you, but I’m going to try my hardest.” I whispered softly between the two of us, our faces only inches apart.
“Fire Lord Zuko, we have arrived.”
The captain snaps us out of the moment we shared, and we let go of each other.
“O-oh, Thank you Captain.”
“Its been an honor serving you, Fire Lord.”
He bows to me and walks off.
“Well, we better get going.” I turn around to see Kasami still staring at me with a slight grin on her face. She nods and we make out way onto the mainland.
“Welcome to the heart of the Fire Nation.”
The moonlight shone down upon the Fire Palace as the light of torches all across the nation could be seen for miles. The music playing and people dancing certainly piqued Kasami’s interest. This is the biggest smile I’ve seen on her yet. She really is beautiful.
Sokka’s P.O.V
“Katara how long is this gonna take?!” I pace around my cage, staring at Aang.
God, I feel like an animal.
Ever since our cages were moved into the same room, he’s been trying to contact Kasami in the spirit world. After being told she was “taken care of” a couple nights ago we’ve all been frantic about trying to contact her. Unfortunately, none of the attempts have worked. Im starting to believe his words.
“Sokka! Shut. Up.” Katara growled at me. “Stuff like this takes peace and quiet!”
Suddenly, we hear Aang groan as he comes back into consciousness.
“Guys,” Aang beamed at us with a grin. “She’s alive!”
Katara and I both let out a huge sigh of relief.
“Shes with Zuko, she said she’s putting together a small team of elite people to help her rescue us.”
“Woah, woah, woah. She’s with Zuko?” I looked at him, clearly shocked. “She always said she hated him.”
“Well, he actually saved her life when she escaped that night. She was almost dead when he brought her in.”
“Shes okay now though, right?” I ask, my face of shock quickly turning into concern.
“She’s perfectly fine now. We’re getting out of here soon, don’t worry.”
I took a deep breath, the first one I’ve been able to take in days.
“I’m just glad she’s alive.”
Kasami’s P.O.V
As much as I want to trust Zuko, part of me is terrified. I know in my heart that I need to hear him out and give him a chance, but a small part is screaming at me to run. I’ve never allowed myself to be this vulnerable with someone, ever. I better play it safe. Keep a safe distance, don’t get too close. I won’t allow myself to get burned again. Never again. Not like last time.
Zuko walked me in to the Fire Palace. Despite its dark and dreary appearance, it really was beautifully crafted and designed.
“I think we should assemble a small team.” I begin, walking around the room. “I’m thinking Suki, Ty Lee, Mai-“
“Mai will not be joining us.” Zuko interrupted sternly.
“What? Why? Shes one the best fighters I know!”
“She will not be joining us, thats final.”
I glared at him. What was that all about?
“I’ll bring my good friend Kahn. Hes an excellent fire bender,” Zuko stated.
“Are you sure we can trust him, Zuko?”
“Would I bring him along if we couldn’t?” Zuko gave me a slight smirk.
“Alright Zuko,” I replied, putting my hands up defensivly. “but if he screws up, its on your ass.”
I smile up at him. Zuko gives me a small chuckle. I think that may have been the first time I’ve heard him laugh. It was a cute one, slightly raspy but nonetheless wanted to make me laugh along with him. I hoped I could make him laugh more often.
“Lord Zuko?” A familiar voice spoke out from the doorway.
“Kasami?!”
“Suki?!”
I ran up to the Kyoshi Warrior and wrapped my arms around her.
“I missed you so much!”
She plants kisses all over my face, causing me to scrunch up my nose and giggle. Even though me and Suki had a rocky past, we always managed to pull through together. She’s an amazing friend, extremely loyal, and will fight with me to the end.
“So I heard were going on a little mission, correct?”
“Thats right.” Ty Lee chimes in, stepping delicately as she makes her way across the room. She spots Suki and I, squealing as she runs over, engulfing us in a huge group hug.
“Its so good to see you girls!” Ty Lee beams as she releases from our hug. I give her a small smile.
“I can’t believe were all together again, It’s been far too long for my liking.”
“Well yeah! You’ve been traveling the world with the Gaang and that hottie Sokka!” Ty Lee gushes, earning a glare from Suki.
“Hehe, sorry...”
I notice Zuko from across the room, his face looks exactly like Suki’s. Angry...with a splash of jealousy. I quickly shake it off and focus my attention back to my friends.
“Hey, did I miss the party?” My eyes shoot over to the deep, unfamiliar voice. His tall silhouette gaining my attention. The shadow steps into the light, revealing his face. Which is not too bad in my opinion. I’m not one to blush, let alone gush over a boy I just met, but when he made eye contact with me I could feel the heat from my cheeks growing red.
“You must be Kasami,” He grinned, walking over to me. “I’ve heard quite a lot about you.”
He shoots a glance at Zuko, winking at him. This earns a glare from Zuko but I can still notice the red on his cheeks before he turns away.
“Oh you have?” I ask, glancing over at Zuko with a brow raised.
“Only good things I hope.”
“Very.” He smirks.
His dimples are so cute.
I’m snapped out of my infatuated stare by Ty Lee and Suki’s giggles.
I laugh it off and walk over to the conference table, closer to Zuko.
“Alright guys, let’s get down to business.” I state, everyone picking a seat.
“How can we be of service?” Suki inquires, fanning herself.
“Aang, Katara, and Sokka have been kidnapped and are being held hostage.” I begin, earning shocked looks from the girls and Kahn. “What we do know is they’re being held on a small piece of land close to Ember Island.”
“The only island close enough to Ember Island is Yangchao Isle. It only has a couple tall buildings, mostly warehouses.” Kahn adds.
“Great,” I close my eyes and remember the events of the night I escaped. “The place where they’re being kept is heavily guarded. I almost died trying to escape.” Zuko glanced over at me, shooting me a reassuring smile.
“We were attacked by four men in masks, I’m guessing they’re the masterminds behind the whole thing.”
“Do you remember anything significant about their appearance?”
“Sadly, No. Just that there was an earth bender, a fire bender and a water bender.”
“What about the fourth one?” Ty Lee added.
“He just...stood there.”
After the meeting was over, we all agreed to meet at the rendezvous point the next day at 12 AM. Its the dock of a small island right next to Yangchao Isle. We decided to split up and prepare for sneaking in with our teams. Zuko and I, and Suki and Ty Lee. Kahn decided to work alone. He said he was going to dig up all the information he could on the Isle and the four masked men who took us. With everyone gone, that just left Zuko and I.
I notice the beautiful pool in the back, just waiting for me to jump in. I sprint to my room in the Fire Palace and quickly pull out a bikini from one if the drawers. Red and black...not quite my style but It’ll have to do. I slip it on and grab a towel, throwing it over my shoulder.
Making my way to Zuko’s room, I notice the door is slightly open, giving me a great view of Zuko. There he stands, shirtless, bouncing in place while pretending to play the guitar and humming a song. A song that seemed all too familiar.
“Secret, secret, secret, secret, tunnelllll!!”
He sings the last part of the tune out loud, causing me to let out the laugh I’d been holding in for far too long.
“HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN STANDING THERE?!”
“Long enough.” I muster out as I’m doubled over, unable to contain my laughter.
When he starts giggling along with me, I can’t help but look up at him and smile.
There’s that laugh again.
“Wait, why don’t you have any clothes on?” Zuko asks, trying not to stare.
“Well, I came over here to ask if you wanted to go in the pool with me?”
His straight face turned into the biggest smile I’ve seen on him yet.
“We might as well have some fun before we, ya know, possibly die.” I said, laughing between my words.
“Don’t say that.” Zuko chuckles.
He splashes me, soaking my hair.
“Oh you’re gonna regret that!” I shout at him, bending a huge bubble of water right above his head.
“Wait wait, Kasami NO-“
He shrieks as I release the water, soaking his entire body, clothes and all.
He looks over at me with a devious smirk, but before I realize what he’s up to, he swiftly runs up behind me. He goes to push me in the pool, but not before I can grab him and pull him in with me.
We spend the rest of night swimming and laughing. Forgetting the events of the past week and the plans to come, we enjoy each other’s company. Who would have thought I’d be here, with the Fire Lord.
After getting out of the pool we lay on his couch, in front of the fire. Despite being in the Fire Nation, the Palace was extremely cold. Unlike the Airbenders and Firebenders, I am unable to warm myself with my breathing. I shudder, goosebumps rising along my tan skin. Zuko takes notice and pulls my body closer to his, wrapping his arms around me. His body was warm to the touch, mine was cold, freezing, even. Soon enough, we both fell asleep. My head resting on his shoulder and his head resting on my own

Book One: Water
Next
There are more children than ever in recent history who cannot see the blues of the icy plains stretching for miles beyond the small village. They see the white of the snow and the black soot in the air, but everything else overlaps in different hues of gray.
For the past hundred years, most born to the Southern Water Tribe have heard the voice of their soulmates and watched as the world around them was painted in colors beyond the shade of blue contained in their soulmates’ eyes within the first few years of their lives. With the youngest generation, however, only two children have the privilege of finding their soulmates so early on, pairing—unsurprisingly—with each other. Ahnah and Silla trail each other around the village, hand in hand and absolutely inseparable from the moment Silla is born a little under a year after Ahnah.
The children of the chief, however, are not so lucky. Katara, the last waterbender of the tribe, is known to collect driftwood that’s just the right shade of brown, rich and dark. She arranges them as artfully as is possible for a child under the age of eight in a pile beside her bedroll, growing especially fitful when her grandmother insists on using some pieces for kindling during the colder weeks of winter.
The chief’s eldest, born under a new moon, sees only in black and white, having never glimpsed so much as a shade of light on the spectrum. The boy, Sokka, worries little about the implications of such things, too focused on following in his father’s footsteps and training as a warrior.
