At night I wake up and write down phrases and words I don’t want to forget. The words that won’t allow me to sleep. The following morning I review them. Here they are today without explanation:

1. Next gas twenty-five miles.

2. Don’t use big words.

3. Four avocados for a dollar.

4. It smells like rats in here.

These are the beginnings of new work that might be forgotten months from now, but I’m grateful for these signposts and ideas that push me forward. These phrases become tiny fires set inside my imagination.

Form Development Clay Art seminar 1/2

In this seminar we were given a veritable visual delight of a wide range of purposes demonstrating the vastness of clay. Traditional we may think of clay as a one dimensional use but it is not until an artist begins to shape and mould it we get to experience clay entirely differently than it being dinnerware.

Tutor Elaine Riordan provided a feast of incredible artists and designers to research in this seminar.

I've been working on making these pour over coffee pots for the past few months. I use one almost every day to make my coffee and I'm getting them to a point where I feel good about showing them to the world. I'll be adding a couple to my Etsy store on Friday along with a handful of other new pots.

My first soda-fired bowl! Soda is sprayed into the kiln at 1200 deg Celsius and then the kiln is shut off when it reaches 1300 (approx cone 10-11 firing). It’s been a dizzying whirlwind of learning here in Chile at @centrodeartecuraumilla with @ayumihorie ! Among many things, we practiced the Mishima technique (custom-made colored slip inlay), so the lines on this bowl were one of my attempts at practicing Mishima! One factor that made it more challenging is that we once-fired, which means there was no bisque firing and we had to directly apply Mishima and glazes to greenware at varying stages of dryness. (Mishima at leather hard, glaze at bone dry). This is because there is no power source besides solar and generator at the art center, so the kiln is primarily gas-fired with supplemental wood and fans used. Ayumi and us students are not used to once-firing so it was nerve wracking and scary at times, but we all love the mystery and risk of ceramics, so it added an element of hightened anticipation for all of us, as we waiting to see what would happen to our pots in the kiln! We all went through ups and downs this week, worked early and late into the nights with headlamps, and rewarded ourselves with walks to the beach and dips in the wood-fired hot tub overlooking the ocean. I haven’t yet had time to process much of my two weeks, but I have a week now to chill in Chile and wander before heading home. Kiln is on! The slow preheat begins and tmr the steady climb to reach cone 10. So excited to finally get going but will not rush this dragon. Might have to request an official name for this kiln. It's been a really long time since I've felt this good about unloading a firing. I couldn't pick one favorite so here's a small selection of my faves.

Another low fire soda fired yunomi. This one is a great example of why I sometimes need to give my work time to grow on me. All of these textured cups with terra sig came out leaving me underwhelmed. I was taking a technique I found mostly successful at cone ten and struggling to see it as being effective at cone 3. I have started to really enjoy some of the subtleties in the flashing the sig provides as I’ve let it sit in my studio and I have taken the time to study it more. Still not there but definitely not something I’m leaving behind. . .
