subject of appropriation and "extinct" cultures came up and now i'm rotating it in my brain so hard i can't focus on the herbarium sheets i need to do. few thoughts.
are they actually extinct or were you just told that (see: mexica / aztec)
or: are they considered extinct because of the actions of your ancestors. is this the narrative they passed on to you and is it true.
are they survived by their descendants. (see: huhugam, ancestral puebloans)
are they survived by kin/sister peoples.
even if a people is functionally gone, are you a better or worse human being for treating (what we know of) their culture as if it is alive.

Shakey Sunday #31:
Zuma, Part 4
Tumblr media
Thanks for putting up with the piecemeal approach I'm taking for one of Neil's all time great records this week. Shakey often collages his records together from different eras, different bands and different moods so I feel justified in taking the same approach here. Zuma is loud, lovely and runs the gamut from hopeful to harrowing. And that's just Side 1!
Today let's flip the record and drop the needle on the album's two most problematic - but still awesome - tracks: Stupid Girl and Drive Back...
At some point in college my graduation requirements dictated that I take Sociology 101. I was a good boyfriend and an equally good student - always on time and meeting my obligations - but I was also a bit of a pretentious jerk, alternatively focused on vital topics such as E.M. Forster's colonial biases and the campus-wide compost program. Intro to Soc struck me as soft, beneath my level. Like I said, I was a bit of jerk.
Anyway, the course asked for a final paper on a topic of your choice. Other students spent weeks doing research into houselessness, mental illness and the human condition. I did no research whatsoever and wrote my 15+ page paper in one sitting, starting at 10pm the night before it was due. My thesis: classic rock is a hotbed for misogyny.
No research was needed because I played records all night while I wrote and every new album contained yet another topic for discussion. A young George Harrison, who'd go on to be a serial adulterer, pronounced his lady friend dead if she so much as looked at another man; Van Morrison considered every female he encountered as both a sex object and as a "little girl". Creepy stuff.
The paper wrote itself and I got a big fat A which I surely did not deserve. Art has - so far! - almost always served as a vehicle for patriarchy; the teacher should have given me a C- and said thank you for your contribution Captain Obvious.
Stupid Girl may be Shakey's greatest contribution to the whole hateful genre of man hate towards other genders. Not only does Neil spend the entire song telling the lady in question that she is dumb over and over again, he does it - thanks again in large part to David Briggs' menacing production approach - with venom and conviction.
Just listen to Neil's double tracked vocals. He hates ladies in every possible octave:
youtube
I am tempted to defend my musical hero by pointing out all the songs in which he sings with earnest praise for women of all kinds and by arguing that Stupid Girl is an aberration in his art. But then I remember a long ago NPR interview with his poor second wife Pegi, whom he summarily dumped not long before she died of cancer, and I feel that defending him here may be a well, stupid, move.
Neil's complicated, that's for sure. I'm glad I'm not married to him, and I'm glad my sister isn't either. But meanwhile, Stupid Girl freakin' rocks.
And so does Drive Back.
youtube
I long considered this song problematic only in the sense that it was not as incredibly awesome as the rest of Zuma. Why include this workmanlike track instead of any of the other essential songs Young had on hand at that point; we're talking Powderfinger (or Big Waves as it was known as way back in the After the Goldrush era), Sedan Delivery, White Line, not to mention the rest of Homegrown...
My entire attitude shifted, however, as soon as I heard Neil's Odeon/Budokan record in official release; there Drive Back sounds like a song David Briggs, Neil, you and me can get behind. It's frantic; it's taut; it cooks. It's on fire.
It's Neil Young.

What do you think the aot characters would major in college? I’d love to hear your hcs on this!
Ooh, this is fun! Thank you for the ask! I had a college AU planned out years ago but I don't think I ever decided what their majors are.
Eren and Zeke - Eldian Studies (assuming there are area studies fields, like European Studies, East Asian Studies, etc). Both of their senior theses are a little too zealous in defending the Eldian Empire and their wars. Alternately, they’re war-obsessed history majors.
Mikasa - I really like the idea of Mikasa majoring in French Language and Literature, idk it just feels right for her goth ass. (I have a fic idea that I never fleshed out where Levi goes to college after being discharged from the military and falls into a taboo-ish relationship with Mikasa, a Ph.D student who teaches his French 101 class.) I could also see her doing an East Asian Studies (or Hizuru Studies in canon) major if she wanted to dive more into her maternal ancestry.
Armin and Erwin - Political Science. I mean, duh.
Hanji - Biochemistry. Also duh.
Levi - In Agape I wrote him as a classics major because it feels like the right combination of low culture and high culture, like in the ruins of Pompeii there's graffiti from 2000+ years ago that's pretty sexual— stuff like, "Theophilus, don't perform oral sex on girls against the city wall like a dog!” (That’s a direct quote, btw.) I could also see him as a history or psychology major.
Jean - Equine Sciences (j/k). I could see him switching majors a few times before going poli sci as well, but with a different focus than Armin. I could also see Jean as an engineering student who’s a big asshole about being an engineer, but eventually gets humbled in some way (either by flaming out and being forced to switch majors or having some social comeuppance that makes him act like less of a dick).
Connie - I thought hard about this and honestly Connie does not seem like the type to be able to get through college unless he picks an easy major, something nebulous like “media studies” (which my boyfriend majored in because it was easy). No matter his major, he intentionally picks the easiest classes in order to coast his way to graduation. Alternately, he studies to become a gym teacher so he can major in essentially running around with a ball and yelling at kids.
Sasha - My joke answer was “food studies” although that is a real field that examines food within a multi-disciplinary context. Which led me to thinking that maybe Sasha might be interested in a sociology major, something that emphasizes her caring about others more so than her love of stuffing her face. (In all of my high school/college AU headcanons, Sasha is a major stoner, though. As is Connie.)
Historia - In a modern AU I’d have her go to college with the intention of following her parents’ wishes, like pre-med or pre-law, but she rebels and switches her major to something “less prestigious” that’s her actual passion, maybe something in the arts or early childhood development so she can become a preschool or kindergarten teacher.
Annie - I imagine her as a philosophy major (so she has a retort for whenever someone gets annoyed with her asking what the point of anything is) or a German language and literature major. If she goes with German, I headcanon that she actually thinks it’s a beautiful language and will defend it vigorously, even though none of her friends agree.
This has been long enough so I’ll end it here, but if you have any questions about specific characters I’ll be happy to answer them!

DC: The High-School AU: The Series: The Staff (the musical)
So I finally cast the school staff and teachers for my DC High School AU, which I thought some of you would have some fun with! I took the subject list from a fairly fancy looking private school, because only schools you have to pay for have their subject lists online, so I’m probably offering way more classes than your average state school, but hey, it’s my AU and I wanted to cram in as many supervillains, obscure heroes, and bad jokes as possible.
Admin & Staff
Principle - Amanda Waller
Deputy Principle & Treasurer - Noah Kuttler (the Calculator)
Nurse - Myra Mason (she was Dr Midnite’s nurse and love interest in the 40s & 50s, then got fridged, but I’m unfridging her and giving her a job with much better survival prospects)
Councillor - Ethel Peabody (she’s a psychiatrist from the Gotham TV show, and also in my headcanon, Amanda Waller’s sister)
Librarian - Stanislaus Johns (The Librarian. I considered bookworm for this job but he’s literally called the Librarian, what was I supposed to do, not use him?)
Admin Staff - Laura Conway (Superman supporting cast and occaisional vampire), Mabel Martin (Riddler’s secretary), Theresa Collins (Goldstar, also Booster Gold’s secretary)
Business
Loren Jupiter (aka Mr Jupiter the richest and therefore most thrustworthy man in the world) - Business 101, Business Law, Entrepreneurship
Wesley Dodds (Sandman) - Business Communications
Annabeth Chamberlain (Brimstone) - Marketing, Hospitality & Tourism (she doesn’t work in tourism, but I figure anyone who can waitress while also having the power to set people on fire and damn them to hell and keeps her job probably knows a whole lot about customer service)
Family & Consumer Science
Miss Tribb (Lobo’s childhood teacher who inexplicably survived the extinction of their species) - Childhood Developement, Early Childhood Education
Neil Richards (The Mad Mod) - Texiles/Sewing, Fashion
Tenzil Kem (Matter-Eater Lad) - Food & Nutrition
Finance
Noah Kuttler (The Calculator) - Personal Finance
Foreign Languages
Matron Bertinelli (Nu52 Huntress, who I’m declaring a sepperate character and the aunt of pre-52 Huntress because they’re radically different characters and I like both of them) - ASL, Italian
Chang Jie-Ru (Nu52 Yo-Yo) - Chinese, AP Chinese
Yolanda Montez (Wildcat II) - Spanish, AP Spanish
Barbara Minerva (Cheetah) - Latin
Health Sciences
Myra Mason - Emergency Medical Responder training
Charles McNider (Dr Midnite) - Anatomy & Physiology, Health Class
IT
Brian Durlin (Savant) - Computer Programming, Web Dev
Jennifer Lyn-Hayden (Jade) - Digital Art 101
Arnold Wesker (Ventriloquist) - 3D Animation, 3D Graphics (I don’t know why but the idea of Wesker as an animator just tickled me. Obviously his real passion is stop-motion, but he learnt 3D because there were more jobs)
English (the fancy private school called this ‘language arts’ which is so prentious it makes me feel slightly nauseous)
Wesley Dodds (Sandman) - English Language, AP English Language
Rac Shade (Shade the Changing Man) - English Literature, AP English Literature
Chloe Sullivan (the worst character in the Smallville TV show, a hotly contested position) - English Language, Communications 101, supervises the School Paper and the Yearbook
Shelly Gaynore (The Whip III) - Englist Literature, Creative Writing
Basil Karlo (Clayface) - Intro to Shakespeare
Nick Scratch (officially his supervillain name is just Scratch, but I refuse to consider that a code-name, looking at you Drake) - Communications 102: Public Speaking
Mathematics (which has a 100% villain make-up, which seems accurate from what I remember of high-school maths)
Noah Kuttler (The Calculator, because I think I’m funny) - Pre-Calc, Calculus, AP Calculus
Harlan Graves (The Underbroker) - Stats, Algebra 1, Algebra 2
Angelo Bend (Angle Man, becuase I know I’m funny) - Geometry, Trigonometry
PE (I realise this is probably too many PE teachers but there are a lot more caonical althetes than just about any other job in the DCU except maybe scientist)
Lawrence Crock (Sportsmaster, you knew this was coming) - Gym, Weight Training, coaches Baseball, Basketball, Tennis & Hockey
Lisa Snart (Golden Glider) - joint-coaches Cheerleading, coaches the Drill Team, Wrestling
Randy Hanrahan (Stallion) - PE, joint-coaches Cheerleading & Cross-Country, coaches Football
William Everett (Amazing Man) - PE, joint-coaches Cross-Country, coaches Track & Field
Matron Bertinelli (Huntress, sort of) - coaches Soccer & gymnastics
Performing Arts
Lisa Snart (Golden Glider) - Dance
Hartley Rathaway (Pied Piper) - Music 101, Music Theory, Composition, teaches Guitar & Percussion
Isaac Bowin (The Fiddler) - Music 101, AP Music Theory, leads Jazz Band, Orchestra, Marching Band
Siobhan Smyth (Silver Banshee) - part-time, leads the Choir and teaches singing
Basil Karlo (Clayface) - Theatre, Theatre 101
Simon Trent (Grey Ghost) - Theatre, Theatre 101, Film Studies
Ted Kord (Blue Beetle) - Theatre Tech
Mary Louise Dahl (Baby-Doll, from B:TAS) - Film Studies, Video Production
Betty Bates (Lady-at-Law, who is technically owned by DC now due to corporate buy-outs) - Debate
Science (do you have any idea how hard it is to pin down areas of specialisation for comic book scientists? TNT is on this list entirely because he’s the only actual honest-to-god professional chemist I could find)
Kirk Langstrom (ManBat) - Biology, AP Biology
Pamela Isley (Poison Ivy) - Biology, Environmental Science
Thomas “Tex” Thomas (TNT) - Chemistry
Achilles Milo (Professor Milo, again not really much of a code name) - Chemistry, AP Chemistry
Will Magnus (I refuse to even dignify it as a code-name) - Physics, Earth Sciences
Ray Palmer (The Atom) - Physics, AP Physics
Adam Strange (DC is just doing this to fuck with me, personally) - Astronomy
Social Studies & Humanities
Barbara Minerva (Cheetah) - World History
Maxie Zeus (ffs) - World History, AP World History (fun fact, Maxie was canonically just a normal history teacher before he got lightning powers, became convinced he was Zeus incarnate, and set out to become a criminal, making him my favourite DC mobster by a country mile)
Terry Long (aka one of the only characters to really deserve to get fridged) - US History, AP European History
Eobard Thawne (every code-name he has is stupid, but lets just go with Reverse-Flash as the least awful option) - US History, AP US History
Nick Scratch - US Government, AP US Government, AP Comparative Politics
Rex Tyler (Hourman) - AP Art History
Magdalene Kyle-Burton (Sister Zero, she’s a sometimes-nun and a sometimes-sister to Catwoman) - Comparative Religion
Michael Carter (Booster Gold) - Economics, AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics
Jonathan Crane (Scarecrow) - Psychology (there is exactly one heroic psychiatrist in all of comics, and I’d already used Dr Fate elsewhere. Scarecrow seemed like the least bad option of the remaining pool for being around children, and he does at least have teaching experience)
Adam Strange - Sociology
Betty Bates (Lady-at-Law) - Law
Richard Occult/Rose Psychic (it’s complicated, lets just say Dr Occult and leave it at that) - part-time, Criminal Justice
Technology & Engineering
Ted Kord (Blue Beetle) - Electronics, CAD, Woodworking
John Henry Irons (Steel) - Engineering, Metalworking
Will Magnus - Robotics
Visual Arts
Linda Lee/Danvers (she’s Supergirl, but I’m making her a different character from Kara Danvers/Kent because the DCU is really short on artists and I needed someone to teach the damn class, although the only thing that really makes her distinct from other supergirls is that she fucked a horse that one time and IDK how that will translate into a personality...) - Ceramics, AP Studio Art: 3D Design, Art 101
Rex Tyler (Hourman) - Graphic Design, Drawing, AP Studio Art: Drawing
Jack Knight (Starman) - Painting, AP Studio Art: 2D Design, Art 101
Jennifer Lyn-Hayden (Jade) - Photography
So there you go - I’ll be honest I still don’t really understand how high-schools in the USA work, and I have no idea what Design studio art even is so I kind of assigned those ones at random, but now it’s done and cannot be changed.
As always this universe is open to prompts so if you want a chapter focussing on any of these characters just drop me an ask or a comment and I’ll see what I can do. Making Dr Occult & Rose Psychic a single gender-fluid person is already on my list to do, since that’s who I thought they were for a longest time when I started reading comics and I’m still kind of annoyed that isn’t canonically what’s going on.

You take psychology? I'm only a freshman in high school but it's something that interests me. What's it like? (This is pretty random feel free to ignore) (also I love your art!!!!)
Hell yeah! An excuse to rant about psychology?? Why would I ignore it?
I’m more on the sociology side of interest, but since Psych and Soci interconnect often, and psych has more job-paths I would enjoy, I decided that Psych was a better major plan. (with a sociology minor)
I started out with interest in behaviorism -I wanted to be a veterinary behaviorist- (classical and operant conditioning are derived from behaviorism), and grew into social psychology -I now have interest in art therapy-.
As a field of study, I think it is best learned with the understanding that all sub-fields of psychology and sociology interconnect. Why do people do the things they do? Is really the key question the two feilds seek to answer. But there are also specific ones like:
Why do some people seem to be introverts and others are extroverts? Why are some cultures ‘collective’ and others ‘individualistic’? Why do people dream? Why do people respond to trauma in certain ways? What exactly is consciousness? Does brain activity predict conscious decisions or does the conscious tell the brain what to do? (Fun fact, brain activity starts before people consciously make a decision.)
An example of assignments I get: One I just finished was about interpreting dreams under the 3 main forms of understanding it (Cognitive, Problem-Solving and Brain Activity, basically). I’ve had past assignments asking about what are the effects of gender in my life and how might my personality change if I was born the “opposite gender” (at the time I was still unaware of being androgynous but my response kinda proved how I was). Since I live in an individualistic culture, I was asked how that affects me and how I interact with society.  Etc, etc.
Understanding yourself and others and how people interact with each other and the world and why is just very valuable information in general I think. Psychology classes have actually even helped me learn better ways to study!
I’d say since you’re a freshman, take a look into psychology or sociology on your own and explore the idea (just be wary of stumbling on Peusdo-Psychology and not the actual scientific field), maybe take a psychology class and see if you like it and it interests you. Take on your local library or some online resources and explore it. There’s no harm in seeking information and I strongly suggest you use this time as a high school student to explore various possible feilds of study and career paths that might interest you. (And, not all things lead to college. You can be in the psych field without a degree actually.)
PS: The thing with psychology is that you have to take the right classes. The best kinda class you can have with psych and sociology is one where they get you to apply the information to your life and actually work to understand it and not just ‘when did Freud become a freak?’ (JK, jk…. fyi, even tho people use Freudian psychology/psychoanalysis as a baseline for the history of psych and SOME of his theories are applied in a less…..weirdo way, most people don’t actually apply it.) SO if you do plan to take a psych class, which I honestly suggest everyone do (it helps you learn more about life and yourself and study methods and etc, and I use what I learned on a daily basis), just find a good teacher. I actually withdrew from my first psychology 101 class because, well, they wanted me to tell them history and dates not concepts and applications. And that’s annoying.
Wholy frick this is a lot longer than I thought it’d get. Vague questions get long answers. Hope this answers your question, and I’m always open to whatever other questions you might have. (And thank you, glad you like it! haha.)

Okay kids, I’m 35, I too was one of those kids who learning came easy to. Luckily I had a dad who forced me to study the subjects that didn’t come easy. Even so, sometimes things weren’t easy. Here are some tips to help you succeed that I learned the hard way. Please, learn from my experience.
1. If you haven’t learned to study and you’re going to college sign up for a “college preparedness” course. Lots of schools offer them and they’ll help you learn HOW to be in college.
2. Read about the pomodoro method. This will help you learn how to reward yourself for work rather than accomplishments.
3. Create a schedule!!! Whether you’re in college or in high school create a specific block of time for study and stick to it. 2-3 hour blocks are good more than that and you’ll get fatigued. You can have more than one block per day. Also 30 min of focused study is better than 3 hours with distractions.
4. If you’re in college learn how to book library study spaces and use them for your more challenging classes.
5. Create/join a study group or find a study partner.
6. READ YOUR SYLLABUS! Day 1 after class go through all your syllabi and start adding project due dates to your calendars. Additionally add dates to start working on those projects. Same goes for your midterms and your finals set reminders for these events!
7. Take good notes! Additionally, I wouldn’t use a computer to take said notes. Kinetic learning is a thing and typing doesn’t work as well for that, also it’s very difficult to copy a profs weird but super important scribble in a computer. This is, however, up to you. Its more important to take notes than how you take them. Just take them! PowerPoint slides, your buddy’s notes and photos of blackboards don’t count. You need to reinterpret the material to process it. TAKE NOTES!
8. If you have a project that will require library materials get to the library EARLY. If you don’t someone else will snag the books you need. On that note, don’t keep library materials for weeks on end, someone else probably needs those books too!
9. If you can’t find the books/articles you need talk to your teacher/professor. Either the materials don’t exist because your point is unsubstantiated or they can help you source materials.
10. GO TO OFFICE HOURS AND GET HELP! Professor teach because they want people to love/enjoy the things they love. If you’re not understanding something, struggling with a project, etc. Talk to your professor or TA.
11. If you have a disability including ADHD, Dyslexia, or an autism spectrum disorder talk to your school counselor or disability support office about getting extra help. You’re not unintelligent because you need a little extra help, use it!
12. Science classes have 2 parts in college, lecture and lab. Make sure you go to both parts.
13. Don’t take classes you don’t enjoy unless you have to. Credit requirements can usually be filled by a large array of courses. If your a lib arts major and need a science credit pick a science you’ll enjoy. I took astronomy of the solar system, botany, and science of the Apollo missions. These were all FUN! If your a science major and hate art, don’t take Art History 101 as your humanities credit, try sociology, psychology, etc.
14. Have fun! There’s no point in going to college and being young if you’re not happy. If college isn’t making you happy just because you’re smart doesn’t mean you have to go. Enjoy your life and don’t torture yourself, lots of smart people never go to college. It’s not a requirement for life.
“Particularly prone to serious procrastination problems are children who grew up with unusually high expectations placed on them…or else they exhibited exceptional talents early on, and thereafter “average” performances were met with concern and suspicion from parents and teachers.”
Holy SHIT

and fsr science-y classes are always only 3 credits? one of them fulfills one of my science reqs. environmental studies 101.
but like...... im staring at all these other classes in other departments that seem SO INTERESTING... like i wanna take art history or another linguistics class or something cool in sociology but 1. Bad Idea 2. none of them work with my schedule anyway :/
but my schedule for next quarter (i register at noon) IS
hist 334: 20th century russia (upper div credit for my major, also fulfills an area of study for my major)
econ 207: intro to macroeconomics (for my major)
esci 101 (for my natural science req)
the history class is gonna be a chunk of work, most likely, and i’m gonna struggle a little in the econ class. i think i only got an a in microecon because my prof was really good and engaging, i really liked her. i think this one’s a dude which is :/

A little about me.
Well, for starters im a gamer but im not “just a gamer”, I have a wide variety of interesting hobbies but only a few amongst those are my actual passions, the ones that I spend the most of my time on. I have a lot of goals and ambitions in life, and obviously one of them is becoming a Warhammer 40k novel writer, which is “indisputably my passion” (which I am “currently in the process of writing”) But not only through that though, a lot of other methods too.  Anyhow........... and I guess i’ll start with “some of my beliefs”  Disclaimer: (im a uniquely purely intuitive non-thinking type of creative artist in the arts of literature, not a grammar geek, grammar is what “book editors” are for.) And if anyone claims that I cannot be an “creative artist” if I do not have good grammar is committing a “false dichotomy fallacy”  (Logic 101)  Anyhow, and so to start. Well, take it however you like, but “as a general idea”........ I dislike society. And not as in an angst way or anything. But as in, im a firm believer of the quote  “Great minds know no bounds”. (aka “outlet” for infinite creativity of the infinitely abstract )  It is my opinion that rules confine us, in a way. (and no im not saying that all rules are bad or anything obviously we need laws to keep society operating the way it’s supposed to be) But much rather.  “A lot of laws in our society are made out of ignorance”. Such as say for example It’s sad that power can be brought in the government and I think that the way school systems are constructed is really flawed. Well, because I think the thing about kids is that. They need to know  “the importance of their individual unique talents and be encouraged by it” and by this I mean is. Many academics subjects in school only prioritize the “pure academic skills” and the way they do testings and everything “it’s disgusting” because say,  “if a child gets a bad grade on a test just because he/she wasn't particularly interested in it” Then what happens?  And yes I know mathematics is important and help build logical skills and etc.............. However, say I don't think it’s quite necessary for...... say a student in college who’s majoring in liberal arts to become something like “a painter/comic arts drawer/book writer”  to have a mandatory class for calculus 1.  You see, that’s just completely unnecessary, random, absurd, and a waste of time and most likely created out of 100% pure ignorance by people who “clearly” do not have even the slightest clue about sociology 101. Most college professors need to get off their high horse. Most of think their all that, because they get to teach in a top USA college such as Harvard or something. It’s one thing if you’re teaching a computer programming class or something, but it’s another if you’re teaching a theoretical  physics class.  Well the difference is that the one teaching physics class deserves the praise and the one teaching the computer programming well, we got enough of that already. Humanities next goal is to settle on mars, and in order to do that we need tons of astro physicists and astronauts.  Not to mention, most of the real intelligent people don't need a teacher, they teach themselves, stay at home in their mastermind caves, and operate in a incredibly sophisticated manner that surpasses even that of all of the official government intelligence agencies all around the world combined. And............. obviously they don't care about status or college or “what anybody thinks about them” in general. In other words, A piece of paper that is given to you that “says you studied at this xxxx university  for x amount of years” does not mean anything to them. The answer being, well “obviously” because “technically” nothing matters and all the smart people know this and btw, welcome to Nilhism 101. Anyhow............... That would pretty much sum up a little about me, And as you can see  “my eyes are the type that see beyond” and i’m really a unique type of non-thinking intuitive genius as far as “everything generally goes”.
I don't spend much of my time thinking about anything really. I’m really just a natural genius as in the fact that I “just know stuff”. I’m naturally curious about all sorts of things and they can range from anything really, But............. no I do not like knowledge for the sake of knowledge. Everything I know, I know for a reason , a reason that is important to me and holds value in my heart, the location of my heart is that responsible for my feelings.  Thanks.

Non-Fiction Resources for Eberron
This post is meant to serve as a series of links to resources for worldbuilding. I’m listing them with an eye towards Eberron specifically, but you can use them for any setting. Some links may show up more than once if they fit in multiple categories.
If you know of a resource that you don’t see on my list, please feel free to reblog/reply/DM me to say what the resource is and why it should be included on the list. I’ll do my best to add it in.
General
Class Central: A meta-database for free online courses across a wide variety of websites. Think of it as Google for online education.
Crash Course: It’s free, it’s on Youtube, and it’s in a ten-minute episodic format. Started by the Green Brothers, the Crash Course series on Economics, Philosophy, Sociology, and Film History are especially useful for Eberron Campaigns.
Coursera: Coursera is a website where university level classes are available for free. You can also get certifications from Coursera for a fee so you can build your resume while planning your next campaign. If you are doing anything involving dinosaurs, this website is a must have.
Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History: Dan loves historical “What if?” moments, and with good reason. If you want to hear the most badass historical stories, examine how drugs, alcohol, and human stupidity impacted history, or get a sense of what it was like to live through the most brutal historical eras, this is the place for you.
edX: Another excellent site with free courses that you can upgrade for a certificate. A good place to look for courses in the humanities and religion.
Foundation for Economic Education: About two dozen course on entrepreneurship and economics. A great option if you want to get into the machinations of the Dragonmarked Houses and the Aurum.
Google Books/Google Scholar: My first goto for research of any kind, and the first place I advise my students to begin their research. Seriously, I’ve written papers, then had them published just using these two. Use them.
Great Course/Great Courses Plus: GC and GC+ are not free services, but they have such an extraordinarily high production value that you can understand why. History, science, culinary theory, economics, anything you can think of is covered in the Great Courses catalogue. Great Courses Plus is their streaming service, which at $15/month for an annual subscription is a killer deal.
FutureLearn: Another great site with a wide selection of courses.
Open2Study: Another solid set of free online courses, this time out of Australia. There are some pretty interesting and unique ones here.
World Science U: An awesome look at current scientific topics. Offers both Master Classes with experts and introductory courses.
Writing with Colour: The best place to go to check yourself for unintentionally problematic depictions of POC in your games. Also a great read if you are looking for details and cultural beats for NPCs you don’t share a background with. They are awesome and you’d be surprised how many chronicle ideas you can get just by binging their archive.
Crime & Law
Addiction and the Brain
The Addictive Brain
Drugs and the Brain
Forensic History
Culture & Society
Cities Are Back in Town - Urban Sociology
Crash Course Sociology
Foundations of Eastern Civilization: Lots of great inspiration here, especially for the history of the Dhakkani Empire and Galifer.
Great Works of Utopian and Dystopian Literature
Indigenous Canada: Cultural colonialism is out of focus in Eberron, but it does exist in many regions, especially once you start to dig into history a bit more. There are also some (likely unintentional) parallels between the history and culture of the Metis and that of half-elves. Plus, if you live in North America, you should be taking this course if for no other reason than the importance of recognising FNMI culture, history, struggles, and contributions.

The Sovereigns & the Six may be the only pantheon, but different regions worship different sets of gods. there is a lot of analysis in this series that you can draw on to figure out why a region is drawn to a particular faith.
How Jesus Became God: Lots of discussions here about religious transitions and syncretisms. While modern Christianity is very different from the Sovereign Host or the Church of the Silver Flame, there are applicable lessons for both.

The Great War: Coverage of WW1, on a week by week basis, 100 years later. If you’re looking for inspiration for the Last War, there is no place better to start than our own “War to End All Wars.”
The Great War and Modern Philosophy
The French Revolution and the Age of Napoleon: There is a very good chance that once King Borenel of dies, Breland will erupt into revolution. The exact circumstances may be different, but there could potentially be a lot of parallels to what happened in France.
Human Rights: The Rights of Refugees: Topical in Eberron during the Last War, especially following the Mourning. Also topical in the real world.
Revolutions Podcast: An excellent look at what happens when people get fed up with their governments. Given that Eberron is filled with rebellions in the making, there is a lot you can mine from our own histories here.

i dont have the mental wherewithal to get deep into it right now, but if you don't know this already. the rising sun flag is a symbol of japanese imperialism. you might compare it to the confederate flag in the U.S. please understand this before displaying it in your art/home/whatever. donut feel bad for not knowing this, but hopefully be curious and turn this into a teachable moment about how the history of japanese imperialism colors pop media in ways that are often invisible to westerners.

American Honey
Written 11/4/16
Tumblr media
I was given an assignment once in college: to read a book and write about it. Pretty straightforward. It was for sociology 101 and the book had to do with personality types. I hated every minute of reading that book. I thought the author was an idiot because according to her assessment, someone with my personality type was essentially a terrible person. I waited until the very last minute to write the paper, naturally, and ended up trying to pound out five pages at two in the morning. As I was writing and citing paragraphs and such, a realization came to me. Who knows if this notion would have swept over me had I not been cramming so late at night, but it occurred to me that maybe I hated this author so viciously because she was actually entirely right. Maybe all my faults could be chalked up to her little assessment and the only reason that I was so opposed to her ideas was because they were negatively affecting my opinion of myself. I added all this into the paper and was highly amused when the teacher gave it an A+ and applauded me on my hard work...
Tumblr media
This moment in my late teens has come across my mind because of my experience with American Honey. I was completely drawn into the trailer the minute I saw it. I thought the cuts were smart, the music was perfect, everything was spot on. I expected the world from this film as I sat eagerly in my favorite indie theater hogging the popcorn from my boyfriend. As the film progressed I became increasingly agitated and disappointed. It was long, meandering, and inaccessible. The lead had no growth and the story as a whole had no drive.  I actually broke down in tears after getting to my car because my high hopes for this film had been destroyed. I watched this almost a week ago, and I waited a week to write this because every time I sat down to do so I felt like something was missing, like I still had to process. That was the first thing that made me question my opinion: why did I still need to process a film that I had written off as a failure? Throughout my very boring days of boxing dentures and crowns at the lab, I really really contemplated this film. I went through every beautiful moment of sunlight bouncing off Sasha Lane's face, every lyric sung along with iconic trap music, every candid example of a trashy midwestern life, and finally it dawned on me that this film scares the shit out of me.
Tumblr media
I rejected it just like I did my sociology book because I saw a version of myself that I'm terrified of. Star is almost emotionless, listless, immature, and above all unhappy. She has no idea how to make the most of her life and by the end of the film I do not have confidence that she will ever figure that out. I have been so blessed with the people around me my whole life and the opportunities that I've been offered. This life that Andrea Arnold is portraying is a life that I wish was fantasy, but it's not, it's real for so many people my age who don't have the things that I have, and I could so easily have been so lost. I could still become so lost.
I've always had a goal. Since I was four years old I've known exactly what I wanted to be. That goal changed a hundred times as I was growing up, but it was never nothing; I just jumped from one goal to another. I can't imagine what it would be like to not know what you want from life, and watching a film that is entirely about people who don't know what they want from life leaves me more tense than the craziest suspense film.
Tumblr media
I'm used to films challenging "people", in the broad sense. Films about discrimination or poverty or death are stories that I'm used to, and I understand why they're difficult to watch. Growing up in my little liberal bubble makes it so that I can watch films about discrimination and not bat an eye because I'm decently confident that I'm not a discriminatory person, but watching a film so rooted in my own fears without being overtly about anything...it's hard to explain. My main point is that I pushed back from the message of this film because letting myself sink into it was too difficult.
On a less confessional note, my realizations in no way made me see this film as perfect. It was entirely too long. I understand why it was so long, that this repetitive, wandering feel requires time to gestate, but I was incredibly distracted by the end.
Tumblr media
This is completely a personal preference, but I'm not a fan of most sex scenes. I think they're generally unnecessary and overused. These sex scenes were no exception. I think the same points could have been made in pre and post scenes. I know that Arnold was going for realism and sex is a real part of life, but I would have been happier if that precious screen time was used to further Star's view of the world or flesh out some of the Mag Crew characters; I didn't get very much from two minutes of Shia LaBeouf grunting.
What was always amazing to me, pre and post epiphany, was the cinematography. I've only seen one other thing that Robbie Ryan has done (and I honestly can't remember the cinematography in Philomena) but my god has he created a work of art here. He definitely knows how to play with light for one thing. Lane's skin glowed like warm honey under the midwestern sun and every shot appeared to be captured on the most beautiful day of the year. Every image was interesting even though most of them were set in a cramped, unforgiving van. I would kill to become this accomplished with my camera.
Tumblr media
Another thing that I appreciated was the screenplay. Every conversation was completely real. Even LeBeouf, who of course I've seen in many things, didn't take me out of the story. I usually find myself thinking of characters as actors when I watch movies, but this one kept me fooled. The dialogue was so good that I never imagined the words on paper, just in these characters' minds. The depiction of youth culture was visceral and memorable. I was brought back to my life at eighteen and nineteen, when all of my friends were a little grungy and we wanted nothing more than to pile into a car, blast music, and cuddle in large groups - both utterly terrified and completely content.
Tumblr media
Of course we have to talk about Andrea Arnold. I recently listened to an interview with her and now I'm sold. She's British!!! What?!? How could someone who's not from any part of the U.S., let alone a southern trailer park, possibly know how to tell this story? I love that she took it on! What balls this woman has! I would feel so insecure tackling a setting piece all about a culture that I have little to no experience in. I'm going to steal an observation from by boyfriend here, that the whole film did feel a little like an anthropological study, but it's nice and hidden because you don't expect anyone to do an anthropological study on foul-mouthed young adults selling magazines. If I were queen of the Oscars (as I fantasize about more than is probably healthy) I would consider Andrea Arnold for best director. She plucked all these actors (excepting LeBeouf and Riley Keough) from obscurity and managed to push their performances to a professional level of realism. I love that she forced the Mag Crew to become a true crew by shooting chronologically, road-tripping the entire way, and embracing their input on performance and music choice. This kind of organic filmmaking is underrated and I would like to see more of it. So, Academy, if you are for some insane reason perusing my reviews, please consider nominating Robbie Ryan for cinematography and Andrea Arnold for directing. If this happens I will take full credit.

Grad Students Need Not Worry
Many online writing companies tell graduate students that they have qualified writers for them. This is usually not the case. It takes a long time to build up a staff of Ph.D. writers who can fill the orders when graduate students want to buy essay writing. If they don’t use Essay Roo, they could be buying writing from someone with a Bachelor’s degree, or worse, not degree at all. In these cases, the amateurs just scour the Internet for a paper on a similar topic and try to “spin” or re-write it. What you will get is horrible.
Do not take chances or needless risks. Aussie grad students will always get Ph.D. researchers and writers.
Any Type of Essay
You are likely to get a wide variety of essay assignments of all types and purposes. Not to worry. We have writers in all content fields who can write any of the following types of essay assignments, once you put in your purchase order form on our site.

Ramblings about my future
So I’ve been having a bit of an existential crisis the past many months trying to figure out what exactly I want to do with my life.
I applied to what has been my dream school for my entire life in December, and got my acceptance letter last week. I applied as an English Education major, which at the time wasn’t what I wanted to do, but was instead what I thought I needed to do.
My tastes have changed so much throughout college. Graduating high school, I was set on the idea of either being an art teacher or a special effects makeup artist. After all, throughout years of always wanting to be a teacher, I tended to idolize whatever teacher I had in the moment. And my last two years of high school, that was my art teacher, and I wanted to be just like him.
I found out quickly in college that art classes just weren’t a good fit for me anymore, and that I struggled to work in front of people, and I struggled with the physical aspects because my body is dying and I just CAN’T anymore. And the second love of my life, pottery on the wheel, became my greatest tragedy because my hands feel like they’re rotting inside out and I just CAN’T make what I want to anymore. And so I’ve quit traditional art altogether, and lost interest in the history.
Special effects makeup fell behind, as well, because again it’s something that I just physically cannot keep up with while my body continues to deteriorate. Not to mention that I can’t afford the materials.
So I decided to go with English. Which has always been my third love, and my strongest love, and something important to me. But my grandfather was a fantastic English teacher, and I will never live up to his legacy. I would be quite good at the job, but the issue is I want to wake up every morning EXCITED about my job. And I don’t think I will with English teaching, even though that’s what I’d be best at.
So I’ve been interested in human sexuality. What I want more than anything at the moment is to teach human sexuality. To teach college courses on the psychology of human sexuality, the sociology of gender, sociology of marriage & family, psychology of relationships, social inequalities, SOC 101, PSY 101, you name it. But the problem here is that I need a master’s at least, if not a PHD, to teach college courses. And I can’t afford that...
I still don’t know what I want to do, and time is running out. I transfer in the fall, and I pick my classes very soon.
I think, this summer, I’d like to invest in some color film and shoot. I don’t know who I’d shoot, or what, but I’d really like to capture the summer in color film. I shot with film quite a bit last summer, and I miss it. There’s something nostalgic about it, and something satisfying about film. I don’t know why I’m so attracted to it, but it’s something I quite want to do, and I think I’m going to.
I don’t want to be a photographer, or focus on that being my career or anything. But this summer is looking to be a blank slate for me. For the first time in years and years, I’ll be spending my summer largely alone. I will have a large amount of time on my hands, and I’ll be looking forward to it. As much as I’ll miss spending day after day busy with my girlfriend, or working, or taking classes, I’m excited to have a summer to just... be with myself. Focus on me. This may be my last summer to do so for the rest of my life. And so, I’d like to present myself with a personal project. Capturing the summer in film.
Perhaps I’m over-romanticizing the concept, or perhaps it won’t actually happen. but in this moment, right now, this is something I want to do. So I’m going to try.
