Reposted from @books_with_the_breeze 🌬Book Review!🌛 The Women Could Fly is my second book by author Megan Giddings, and WOW, does she have a way with storytelling social horror. On the face of it, this book is absolutely not a horror. It's more magical realism - but it's that realism that is the hardest part of the whole novel. It's a story of witches, family dynamics, friendship, tough choices, gender & race inequality, religion, and society being largely controlled by just aaaabsolutely giant dickbag assclowns. So depending on your stance with witchcraft being real or not this is either a too close to home fantasy, or just actual reality. I was absolutely infuriated throughout reading this, and it took me longer than a book of this length would normally take because I had to keep putting it down and regrouping. We are rooting for our main character Jo, a 27/28 year old Black woman, who is smart and funny and creative and clever and resilient - but it's one thing after another in her life that just keeps pushing her around - disempowering her, and making her question everything she is - her self worth, her path, her place in society, and what's in her heart. It's just so, so hard to read because it's just so gd real. Giddings is truly such a talent, and both this book & Lakewood are books that will stick with me for a very long time. When I read books like this I am reminded that it's incredibly important to FEEL these feelings, to sit with them and let it remind us not to be complacent in the destruction of our own lives and societies. TONE-DEAF is an interesting horror with heavy doses of comedy. Takes on the divide between Baby Boomers & millennials. Doesn't always hit the mark, but it's a great little flick. Robert Patrick is excellently nasty as the Boomer villain, while Amanda Crew is equally as fun as the millennial protagonist. Pollyanna McIntosh's DARLIN' (2019) is out on VOD & it'll also be at Fantasia in Montreal. Amazing film. An intelligent & horrific look at misogyny. Great sequel to THE WOMAN (2011) + OFFSPRING (2009), going deeper into many of the themes. McIntosh is great again as the Woman, even better as director & writer. Lauryn Canny is incredible as Darlin. An intense horror that isn't even overly graphic. Shag anyone who says AWAIT FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS (2018) is terrible. Not at all. A solid, if not brutally grim post-Brexit, post-Trump era horror movie with a dose of sci-fi, too. This movie crept up on me, getting more & more unsettling as time went on. Definitely recommend this to anybody who likes their horror with claustrophobic family drama, sociopolitical messages, & a strong dose of weird science fiction.
