It's coming up to a season full of family and friends gatherings. If you are hosting one of these gatherings, here are some ways to support the sober people in your life (even if they haven't told you yet)
1. Don't give alcohol as a present. To anyone. You don't know where someone may be, even if you know them really well, so just don't force that onto anyone.
2. Serve lots of NA options. If you can go completely NA, that would be insanely cool on your part, but if you can't, then provide as many alternatives as you can. Make it a goal to offer the same amount, if not more, NA drinks.
3. Have a private room/area that you can turn into a "quiet time" room. If you notice someone who is just not having a good time, or isn't being themselves, tell them where the space is, and that they are allowed to use it if they need it. This isn't even just for people struggling with substance use, the holidays can be hard for a lot of people, and sometimes a quiet space is nice. (Bonus points if you put some puzzle books etc in there).
4. Don't ask why someone isn't drinking. It's none of your business. Maybe they're working on something, maybe they have health issues, maybe they're pregnant, maybe they're just punk enough to realize drinking sucks. Even if they do answer, it might change the atmosphere of the gathering. If someone else is pestering the sober guests, deal with it. Keep them safe.
4.5. If someone DOES tell you their reason without being asked, support them 100%.
5. AS A SUGGESTION, as the host, set an example and don't drink. If you can't do this, that's fine, but it definitely helps others feel comfortable if at least one other person is in the same booze free boat.
6. Be safe. Whether or not you're getting clean this winter, be careful, be smart, get help if you need, advocate for yourself or others.
6.5. Even if you haven't hit rock bottom, or aren't an addict, please consider sobriety. Just try it. Start on New Year's if you need to. You will inspire others who need it.
Add on if you have anything else 💜

Klatchian coffee has an even bigger sobering effect than an unexpected brown envelope from the tax man. In fact, coffee enthusiasts take the precaution of getting thoroughly drunk before touching the stuff, because Klatchian coffee takes you back through sobriety and, if you're not careful, out the other side, where the mind of man should not go. The Watch was generally of the opinion that Samuel Vimes was at least two drinks under par, and needed a stiff double even to be sober.

Casual reminder that you can choose to be sober regardless of if you have an addiction problem or not. Despite how prolific drinking is in many cultures, drinking is not necessary to be fun, to be sociable, to be vulnerable. You are not a downer for opting out of drug use (including alcohol). You are not on the side of weird, puritan drug programs and the cops for being sober, just like you're not a booster for alcohol company capitalists by enjoying a drink. Being sober should not be solely associated with purity and trauma.

Aww - thanks, anon! I can't believe I haven't written for Nic yet, so thanks for the nudge!
Context: Nic has been sober for a while and is holding down a steady job in the city, where he meets the reader.

Bus Stop
"I have a crush on a stranger," you blurted out at dinner with your BFF. She stared at you like you had lost your mind. Maybe you had.
"Okaaaaay. Tell me about said...stranger," she replied slowly, skeptically.
"I take the same bus every day heading home from the office. Same bus. Same route. Same time. Every weekday. This cute guy - dark brown curls and cheekbones that could cut glass - always gets on two stops later and sits across from me. Every day except Wednesdays. Sometimes, if we happen to lock eyes when I look up, he'll nod and offer a closed-lipped smile. The looks have started to...linger. I've noticed that I have started to look forward to it."
At some point while narrating your story, your focus drifted off into the distance. When your eyes returned to your friend, she was grinning at you like a cheshire cat.
"Oof, you've got it bad."
"I know....," you groaned and dramatically dropped your forehead to your hands.
"What's the big deal? Ask him out." She shrugged nonchalantly.
You stared at her wide-eyed, jaw slack. "How?" You asked incredulously.
She laughed. "Start by asking his name. The rest should take care of itself."
<><><><><>
The following Monday was a federal holiday, so you wouldn't see the beautiful mystery boy again until Tuesday. The last hour of work crawled by at a torturous pace. At closing, you grabbed your coat and bolted out the door, determined to catch the bus on time. It dependably arrived at your stop like clockwork.
You sat in your usual spot, knee bouncing from nerves and excitement. Two stops later, a slew of people stepped onboard. With each unfamiliar face, you grew more and more disappointed until finally, the object of your affection appeared. He took his normal position across the way and down a few seats. He always looked so nice and put together in his button-down shirt and slacks.
You were eager to talk to him but didn't want to come off as a stalker, so you waited a couple of stops before scooting over to sit directly in front of him. Your movement caught his attention, prompting him to look up at you.
"Hi," you squeaked and froze as you locked eyes.
"Hi," he replied slowly, both confused and amused. He flashed a smile that frazzled you further.
"I- uh, I've seen you here almost every day for months. So this isn't like talking to a stranger. I, uh, don't usually make it a habit of talking to strangers. I've been wanting to meet you." You paused and caught your breath. "I'm [Y/N]." You stuck out your right hand to shake. Smooth, real smooth.
"Hi, [Y/N]." You felt electricity run through your fingertips as he took your hand in his. "I'm Nic."
"Nic," you breathed, holding his hand probably a little longer than a customary handshake. You weren't sure what to do next, except make a note that your BFF gives terrible advice.
He cleared his throat. "I- I've uh, noticed you, too. On the bus every day, I mean."
All you could do was blush.
"Getting off work for the day?" Nic asked as you settled back into your seat, nodding toward the laptop bag at your side.
"Yep, the daily grind. The best part is the bus ride home."
It was his turn to blush. He ducked his head down sheepishly. You were dismayed to look up and see your stop was next.
"This is my stop coming up. The day crept by while I waited to finally talk to you, but the ride blazed by once I did." You sadly half-smiled as you looked into his jade-hued eyes, while also admiring your own newly found confidence.
"Oh." You detected a hint of disappointment in Nic's voice. "If...hopefully this doesn't sound creepy...if you'd like, I can get off here, too, and walk with you. My stop is just the next one down," he offered.
Your heart beat rapidly - slightly wary since he was still effectively a stranger, but mostly exhilarated by the prospect of having more time with him. Your words failed, so you just nodded.
When the bus stopped, you both stood and walked toward the front. Nic stepped off first, then turned and offered his hand to help you down.
"Thanks," you responded, blushing at the gentlemanly gesture.
"Where to?" he asked as he shoved his hands in his coat pockets.
You froze as rationality hit you like a ton of bricks, finally realizing that you would be leading this guy, still essentially a stranger, to your apartment. No matter how much you liked him, that wasn't a smart move.
"Well, I...I," you stammered nervously. "I barely know you, so I'm not going to show you where I live. Not yet, no offense."
"None taken," Nic replied, holding his hands up in surrender.
"But I want to get to know you, and I don't want that to stop here. Want to duck in somewhere and grab a drink?"
"I- I don't drink." His brow furrowed, and his eyes cast downward slightly. "B-but I do eat!" he added. "Hungry? My treat."
You smiled and nodded, pointing at the diner across the street. "How about there? They make a mean cheeseburger and milkshake."
Nic grinned. "Works for me."

just wanna thank the universe for tonight's sobriety. i feel like a person again. i'm a person with trauma, psychosis, depression, anxiety, chronic pain & fatigue... but i'm still a person. i'm still a person and i don't need to drink and drug away my life, my soul. whether i relapse again or not doesn't change that.
my future self could try all they want to erase my humanity, in a desperate attempt to see my ego as the sole cumulation of all i am... but that will always be wrong. that will always be sickly, deadly, and unnecessary suffering. that will always be far less than i deserve.
i am sober tonight. i hope i'm sober a minute from now, an hour from now, a day from now. i hope i feel that way every day i have left on this earth, however many or little that is. i'm a person. a whole world exists inside me and for tonight, in this moment, that world gets to simply be. exactly as it exists right now, pain and hardship and all.
and it's beautiful. hold on, pain ends. h.o.p.e. i love you all.

The Beautiful Boy Bus Stop Story was so cute! Would it be too much to ask for a part 2? The interactions between the pair was adorable! Love your stories. :)
Ask and ye shall receive! What do y'all think? Does it need a Part 3?
Bus Stop (Part 2)
Catch up on Part 1 here
Ever the gentleman, Nic held the door to the diner open for you. Once he stepped in after you, he scanned the room.
"Wow, it's like straight from a 50's TV show," he mused. Before you could respond, a voice rang out from the kitchen.
"Hey, [Y/N]! Have a seat, honey, and we'll be right with you," one of the servers called.
"Sooooo, do you come here often?" Nic joked as he followed you to your usual booth and sat across from you, facing away from the kitchen.
You shrugged and put on an innocent face. "Sometimes, I get tired of my own cooking." He didn’t need to know [yet] just how domestically challenged you were.
Cheryl, who often waited on you when you stopped by after work, appeared at the end of the table. "I was wondering if I would see you this week! And I see you brought a friend this time." She grinned and winked at you as she set down the menus in front of each of you. "What can I get you two to drink?"
You blushed at her lack of subtlety, hoping Nic wouldn't be put off. "I'll have a Coke."
"I'll just have some water, please," Nic responded politely.
"One water, one Coke, coming right up. I'll give you some time to look over the menu." As she stepped toward the kitchen, Cheryl turned on her heel and waved to get your attention. She pointed at Nic with one hand and signaled a thumbs up with the other. "Nice!" she mouthed.
You dropped your chin to hide the smile pulling at the corners of your lips. Luckily, Nic didn't seem to notice as he browsed the options. Not needing the menu, you took the chance to study his face up close. The way his dark hair curled into perfectly tousled ringlets. The light dusting of freckles across his cheekbones. The small scar just to the left of his no-
Your investigation was cut short when he set down the menu and looked back at you with those gorgeous eyes framed by lush lashes.
"So, uh, do you work downtown? I assumed since you're already on the southbound route when I get on the bus," he inquired.
You shook yourself from your stupor. "Oh, yes, I do. I'm a paralegal at Warner, Fitzgerald, and Associates. But, I'm studying to be a lawyer, though."
"A lawyer, huh? Impressive. How much lo-"
Before he could continue, Cheryl returned and set the drinks down on the table. "Alright, are we ready to order?" Nic gestured for you to speak first.
"I'll just have my usual," you said, handing the menu that you never opened back to her.
"And you, dear?" Cheryl asked, turning to Nic.
"I'll, uh, have the same." He flashed a smile at you before handing over his menu. "Thank you."
After Cheryl turned away, you leaned forward toward him. "You don't even know what my usual is."
Nic shrugged. "Perhaps not, but everything on the menu looked good."
You giggled and sat back. "Well, prepare to be amazed, then." He smiled that gorgeous smile in return that caused you to glitch again. Was there anything not perfect about this guy?
Realizing you were probably all but drooling at this point, you cleared your throat to break the brief awkward silence and regain your composure. "So what about you?"
"Hmm?" He tilted his head to the side like a confused puppy. An adorable one.
"Sorry. What do you do for work?" you clarified.
"I'm, uh...I'm a writer."
"You don't seem too sure about that, Nic," you teased, but then quickly froze, realizing that he probably wasn't yet ready for your brand of humor. To your relief, he chuckled and clasped his hands on the table.
"I am putting it out into the universe that I will be an accomplished author one day. But in the meantime, I am working downtown at the news station while I am going back to school."
"Back?" you ask curiously.
"Well, I didn't finish the first time due to some, uh, complications. I had to figure some things out about life first."
You could tell by the way Nic cast his eyes down to the table that there was more to the story than could be unpacked at present. Without thinking, you reached out and placed your hand on top of his.
"A winding road makes for a much more interesting story than the straight and narrow, Mr. Writer," you replied reassuringly.
Nic glanced up at you and half-smiled before looking down again at your hand. "I suppose you're right." He rotated one palm up to hold yours.
A tiny gasp escaped your lips. ::Is this really happening?:: you thought to yourself. Nic's thumb grazed your knuckles, leaving a trail of fire from his touch. Much to your chagrin, Cheryl cut the moment short by walking up with your plates. Nic cleared his throat and pulled back to make room on the table.
"Here we go," she announced. "Two open-faced cheeseburgers with a fried egg on top and a side of curly fries. Enjoy! I'll check on you again in a bit."
"Wow," Nic exclaimed. "Can't say I've ever had an egg on a burger before."
"Don't knock it 'til you've tried it," you responded before unabashedly taking a huge, ungraceful bite of your own burger, leaving a bit of mustard on the corner of your lip.
"You've, uh, got something right...," he paused to point at his own cheek to demonstrate.
"Oh!" You hurriedly grabbed your napkin to wipe it away, bringing attention to your deep blushing.
Nic laughed. "Hey, it's cool, it's cool! Now, where do I even start with this burger?" He joined the halves and brought it to his mouth, manfully taking a big bite to match yours. He chewed a moment before his face lit up. "Oh man!"
"See?! And you dared doubt me," you teased.
"I vow to never doubt you again." Nic locked eyes with you and blushed with his own admission. He laughed it off, and the two of you continued to chow down, occasionally taking a break to talk about classes, what the other likes to do for fun, and other enjoyable small talk.
Cheryl stopped by to check on you as you both picked at the last of your fries. "Can I get you two anything else? Maybe the usual milkshake?"
"Oh, no, I'm stuffed," you admitted.
"Maybe next time," Nic added as he retrieved his wallet.
::Next time?!:: Your heart raced. Cheryl picked up on it, too, and winked at you again when she returned his card.
Check closed, you and Nic slowly walked out of the diner. "I had fun tonight. Getting asked out on a date was not how I pictured today going, but I'm here for it," he said, hands in his pockets as he walked alongside you down the street toward your place.
"Same. While there was some premeditation on my part," you replied through a laugh, "I didn't dare speculate what would happen after I said hello."
"I'm glad you did. Say hello, I mean."
"Me, too." You slowed to a stop, forcing him to stop and turn back to you. "As much as I don't want this evening to end, this is my street." You jutted your thumb at the street sign at the intersection. "Will I see you on the bus tomorrow?" you asked, hope evident in your tone.
"I have a, uh, standing meeting after class on Wednesdays."
"Oh, right." You visibly deflated. "I forgot today is Tuesday, not Monday. You never get on the bus on my commute home on Wednesdays."
"You notice when I'm not there?" Nic asked in disbelief.
"Always." You smiled as you looked up into his eyes, following his movement as he stepped in closer.
"[Y/N]?" he breathed.
"Yes?"
"Can I kiss you?"
