I want to apologize for how I acted earlier when you shared you were dating someone. I am not proud of what I said.

James says it's important to clarify what exactly I'm apologizing for. It was not okay for me to call your new man a nasty looking idiot without giving giving him the chance to prove that he is in fact a nasty loo, I will refrain from using such language when refering to your significant other.

The news were shocking and that's why I reacted that way, but I understand that is not excuse. You are so amazing and perfect . You are my friend and I know I should be supporting you in this new relationship.

But as your friend I think it's also important that I tell you that I don't think you should be with him. I don't know him, but I know you. And while the words I used were harsh I don't think he's good enough for you.

Honestly, you could get someone smarter, I'm a good judge of character for that since I'm also quite brilliant myself. And definitely someone with better style. I know you're always doubting how well you dress but when we are together we complement each other so perfectly. And you are always saying how much you like my style.

I probably sound like I'm jealous. But Moony, I saw how you looked at him, and I know how you look at someone you love because I love how you look at me. That's not how you see him.

I don't know if maybe I'm also just scared, that the more you are with him the less you'll be with me. The thought of being away from you scares me terribly.

I'm sorry I don't say it enough, I try to at least show it, it's sometimes just hard for me.

It was a quiet evening in the Gryffindor common room, the fire crackling softly in the hearth. 

Most of the students had already retired to their dormitories, leaving only a few stragglers lounging around. 

Sirius and Remus had claimed their favorite spot on the large, overstuffed couch by the fireplace, where Remus was deep into one of his textbooks, and Sirius was lounging across the cushions, looking at the Daily Prophet.

The peace was short-lived.

“Moony, what do you think?” Sirius flipped the paper around, showing an advertisement for enchanted leather jackets. “Should I get one of these?”

Remus hummed absently, too absorbed in his notes to really pay attention. “Sure, pumpkin.”

The words slipped out without a second thought, but the effect was immediate. The dog animagus froze mid-page flip.

“Wait... what?” Sirius’s grin began to stretch, his eyes twinkling. “Did you just call me pumpkin, Moony?”

Remus blinked and looked up from his textbook, replaying his own words in his head. When it hit him, his face flushed a bright shade of red.

“No, I- I didn’t mean-” Remus stammered, flustered.

“Oh, but you did.” Sirius was already sitting up. His grin only widened as he leaned closer. “You absolutely called me ‘pumpkin.’”

Remus let out a defeated sigh, knowing there was no escape. “It was an accident. Forget I said anything.”

“An accident? Really? Are you sure that’s not just your true feelings slipping out?”

“Sirius...” Remus warned, though his cheeks were still a traitorous shade of red.

“I think you’ve been holding out on me, Moony,” Sirius teased, moving closer. “Pumpkin, huh? Well, if that’s how you feel…”

Remus buried his face in his hands. “Please don’t.”

“Too late,” Sirius sang. “I’m never letting this go. I’m your little pumpkin now. Forever.”

Remus groaned into his hands. “It was one time, Pads. One slip.”

The noiret was relentless, however. “Oh, don’t be shy, sweetheart. I think it’s cute.”

Remus peeked out from between his fingers. “If you ever tell anyone-”

Sirius gasped dramatically, placing a hand over his heart. “Me? Tell anyone that my dear Moony uses pet names? I would never!” He smirked. “Unless, of course, you refuse to say it again.”

Remus sighed. “I’m not calling you ‘pumpkin’ again.”

“Come on,” Sirius pleaded, giving him his best puppy-dog eyes. “Just once more. For me? I promise I’ll never tease you about it ever again.”

Remus raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. “Liar.”

“Yeah, okay, I’m definitely lying. But still. One more time, Moony? Please?”

“Nope. Not this time, cariad.”

Imagine Remus Lupin has a scar that goes straight through his lips. His upper lip is constantly all swollen and damaged. It makes him so extremely insecure of himself to know that this scar will forever be present on his face. Whatever beauty he had before he got this scar is now all gone, taken away from him, according to himself. He tries not to bother too much…

Sirius Black isn’t confident.

When he’s around James Potter he’s reckless and stupid enough to come off as confident, but he isn’t. And nobody knows that but Remus Lupin.

There’s only one person Sirius is around all alone that isn’t James, and that’s Remus.

It’s to Remus he goes when he’s embarrassed for things he said and did in James’s company. When he’s exhausted after a whole day of being energetic and barely recognising himself. After hours of detention because of something idiotic he did with James, to impress James, to satisfy James. It’s to Remus he goes when he needs a break.

Remus always comforts him, or mutters at him under his breath for interrupting his reading. But that’s all Sirius needs every now and then.

Someone to be there for him and let him be himself. Someone who doesn’t expect anything from him.

Whenever he needs that, snaps out of this weird state of mind he’s in whenever he’s with James, he finds Remus and spends time with him. What they share is nobody’s but their own, and Sirius loves it. Remus loves it too, more than he’ll ever admit, because Merlin… he hates the stupid git.

But oh, how he loves him.

“You can’t just take off like that!” Remus reacted loudly. They had been living together for a year but they had never had a fight like this. 

“Since when!?” Sirius was as angry as he was confused.

“Since always, Sirius. You always tell me when and where you are going out!” 

“I don’t see James telling you everytime he goes out. I can take care of myself, Remus.” Sirius had stopped calling him anything but Moony for years now. 

Remus kept feeling like he broke things, he just wanted Sirius to be okay. Everything that came out of Remus’ mouth felt wrong. He thought that Sirius would understand that it wasn’t about control, it was about him just wanting to know where exactly he would show up if Sirius ever called him to say he needed him. He just cared, maybe too much.

“It’s different,” was all Remus managed to say, his voice turning into something soft even if his eyes still seemed upset. 

Sirius didn’t say anything back instantly, instead he got closer to Remus. They had always been comfortable standing near each other, especially when trying to talk. As if the closer their hearts were, the less words they needed.

“It’s different because-”

“Heeeey, we are back!” James barged into their apartment with Regulus right behind him. 

“Get out James!” Remus and Sirius screamed in unison. 

The loud demand made the couple retreat instantly with a few muffled laughs on their way out. 

The moment the door closed they chuckled, but Remus continued. “Listen, I know you can take care of yourself, Sirius. I just can’t help but worry. Everytime you leave, every time you’re out of my sight… I can’t stop thinking about you.”

“Moony, talk to me.” Sirius’ hand reached for Remus’ fingers. 

“I can’t lose you Sirius,” Remus confessed. The knot on his throat threatening to untangle into a river of tears. He didn’t need Sirius any other way, he could remain like this, as long as he still had him in his life. Remus couldn’t look at Sirius, not when ‘I love you’ was so close to slipping out.

“Look at me,” Sirius gently grabbed Remus’ chin and lifted it. “You are not like James to me either.” 

“I am not?” Remus asked, searching desperately for anything more that would confirm what the meaning behind Sirius’ last words were. 

As if his thoughts had become prayers, Sirius carefully lifted his hand and placed his palm on Remus’ cheek. 

“Moony, you’re different for me too.” Remus could no longer control his feelings and tears started to fall down his cheek, damping Sirius’ hand. Sirius gently removed his hand and leaned in to kiss the place where his hand had left absent and kissed it. 

“Sirius-” Remus said with a broken voice, but Sirius' lips slowly started pressing more kisses around his face. Remus opened his mouth once more, the final confession about to leave his lips.

“I know, Moony. Me too,” Sirius interrupted. Gently, his lips traveled to the only place that remained unkissed: Remus’ lips. 

A first kiss. Their first kiss.
