#so yeah amazing episode i am: obliterated (as always)

See, the thing about loving Blanche as a character so much is that I don't think I could ever fully explain it to a casual viewer.

Like, if I tell them that I love her because she's dramatic, and energetic, and witty, and delightfully funny, and charming, and stunning, and free, and fiery, and with a much, much bigger heart than it might seem, and a thousand more things for which I actually do, sincerely, love her, they'll believe me, of course.

But how do I tell them that one of the special reasons I love her is that she has a void at the core of her being that's shaped like George. How do I tell them that one of the central points of her character, one of the threads that holds her together, is this overwhelming, desperate grief over her sudden loss. How do I tell them to watch S5E18 An Illegitimate Concern and pay attention to the way her expression changes when David reveals that he's George's son, or to the way her voice breaks when she says 'then I find out that the only man I ever loved cheated on me' (the only man [she] ever loved, and she says it like that, out loud, laid bare in her shocked pain). How do I tell them that towards the end of the episode there's this exchange:

[David:] There he is. I've got his eyes. [Blanche:] I know.

I know, she says, and it sinks in then and there that for the entire episode Blanche has been seeing this young man with eyes that must have felt familiar but she couldn't quite pinpoint why, and so in perfect Blanche fashion she just didn't think about it, but then he revealed his identity and she must have known. She goes to check her diaries, of course, because denial is her first and last defense when she's hurt, but she knew, she knew right from the very start that he was telling the truth, because she knew those eyes, and those eyes would never lie to her.

Oh, those damn eyes. I still haven't seen in anyone else's what I see in yours, she says to George in a dream once. The most hideous betrayal, and she comes to know it through the eyes of the only man she ever loved.

So, like. How do I tell them all that.

Avoidance vs. Vulnerability

I love how so much of Blitzø’s character development is rooted in his body language.

Lets examine:

"IT WAS NOT A BREAKUP! You need a relationship for one of those and we never had that... and we never will."

Blitz, after yelling at Millie's face clarifying to her that it wasn't a Breakup, only to immediately turn his head the other direction because he doesn't want to see her face.

This is Blitz being avoidant and trying his damndest to keep up that facade he always puts on.

Despite the fact, that his voice breaks when he says the words "... and we never will," Blitz is making sure Millie does not see his face. Showing to us the audience that Blitz still has his walls up around Millie.

Millie makes a joke to Blitz about "trying to not be our third anymore," fully expecting Blitz to make his usual spastic joke, deflecting the situation as he always does...

But the thing is, Blitz doesn't make a joke to avoid the question, he simply states very seriously, "No, not anymore."

Millie is confused and shocked, almost with a sad expression on her face. Millie has never seen Blitz act so seriously before and it shows.

However, with the complete obliteration of his walls caused by the trauma he suffered by Rolando, Blitz now feels comfortable enough to let Millie see the real him.

Millie states the elephant in the room, "The bird got you that bad, huh?"

Or in other words...

Wow, you really have feelings for this guy...

And Blitz simply states the words, "I guess." Showing to us, in the most simple, bare bones way that yeah, he does have feelings for him.

I love how Blitz looks straight at the camera when asked this question, he doesn't make an effort to look at Millie and he still averts his eyes the other direction showing to us how uncomfortable he is with being vulnerable.

But the biggest thing Blitz does in his body language is the fact that he doesn't try to purposely hide his face away from Millie, he just dejectingly looks off into the distance, because even though he's accepted and acknowledged his feelings for Stolas, he's still aware of the fucks up he made in Apology Tour.

Millie makes one last good-natured joke towards Blitz to lighten the mood, and Blitz simply averts his gaze Millie's direction with a grateful smile, almost giving her thanks for not dwelling on the conversation for too long.

(Stolas I get it, I am also down bad for this man. JFC if you don't want him, can I please have him?)

Blitz with relaxed eyes, simply plays into her joke, "Well you know, your husband is still a little fuckable."

I love how Blitz doesn't fully play into Millie's joke, he makes sure to add that little there to NOT downplay his feelings for Stolas.

Ghostfuckers is my new favorite episode of Helluva Boss, and one of the reasons why has to be the amazing character development Blitz and Millie went through this season.

13 - as mentioned in the tags, i, don't particularly care for SDR2... despite my appearances, and fixation on sai/ou, i lean towards GL and HL, and the most of SDR2 gives me for those is kuzu/peko, and... well, chapter 2...

and the anime, kind of obliterates the - themes, arc, intent behind chiaki. kodaka has hisssss waifu biases (this happens with haru, too) - and the cast's induction to the remnants is, weak, and i am a MASSIVE sucker for brainwashing, so me going 'meh' at it, says, a lot.

altogether it soured my... already soured feelings on SDR2. there is a lot of interesting concepts here, but, the only character i feel was executed well in the SDR2 portion of the anime is ryota. who is a new character. i love him and his relationship w twogami is amazing, etc. so, uh, despair arc. is bad and boring and was painful to sit thru.

future arc! i like it, honestly, even if it's another 'mrhghg this is cool in theory but done really poorly,' and honestly i really think. a lot of things introduced in dr 3 come to fruition in v3. i joke that, 'kodaka just wanted to work on v3, but they made him make an anime,' and i'm PARTIALLY kidding. and the best episode of dr 3 happens during this - altho it's not on the cast, either, it's the udg episode, and it blows the rest of the anime out of the water.

tl;dr Haha This Sucks, Man. this is an anime you can only watch w/ someone else, i feel, otherwise you'll go crazy. i like ryota and miaya a lot, i genuinely enjoy ruruka... in HPA aus, i make a point to, include ryota. my special hikikomori boy.

30 - mmmm not sure. i think, tojo - she shouldn't have survived into endgame, no, but one of the reasons i am so aggressively MEH abt her is that, she doesn't have time to develop or shine. she is, nothing, and the translation treats her motivation as a cheap joke. politicizes it. fun fact, the guy who handled the monokubz, and by extension gonta n angie, is the same guy. yeah, that guy. =_= responsible for a lot of the very shitty decisions in the localization. if SC thinks it's ok to make her primary motivation as a joke, why should i take her seriously?

i think she should've survived until ch3, to have some time to flesh things out. she shouldve been a bit undecided abt, you know, betraying her classmates. she should've become a temp antagonist, especially since she tries to set ouma up as untrustworthy and thus unreliable for his testimony in the trial - and she is very, very angry at sai, and gaslights him to hell and back. and it's EFFECTIVE. w/o momo, sai would've crumbled. give me, more of that, dammit!!! GOD!!! but no, so i am just.. ugh... tojo, right. i always forget abt her while doing cast stuff.

hoshi, i think, is another obvious 'I WANT HIM TO LIVEEEEEEEEEEE' but i don't know how well that would've worked with the ult. ending and intent of v3.

uh... mmm... thh, i don't really know... haha. i actually quite like, hifumi, but he was nevverrr everrr gonna survive. too bad...? some of the joke characters im like. Wait, I enjoy them, give me more, and at least hagakure survives!!! i'm happy abt that!!!

31 - unpopular opinion incoming, but i don't think any of the survivors were 'undeserved' - while i quite... dislike SDR2's cast... they made the right choice of who got out of the game alive. i wouldn't change any of them there.

for THH, i, mmm... i never quite 'clicked' with togami. he's fine... i suppose... but i don't find him and his attitude quite as compelling as ouma. nor komaeda's, who i am so, 'I AM SO OVER THIS GUY, EVERYONE STOP FUCKING TALKING ABT KOM!!!' about, lol. maybe he's more basic bc thh is, at its core, a very basic story... it was the first, and in a game series that afaik was not Planned to have sequels etc.

v3 literally all of them deserved to survive. i like each and every one of them. i am glad that yumeno didn't have, the pitfall of, 'suffers massively but grows bc of x's characters death, only to die later,' like ishi and hiyoko did. she's lovely, i really do think she is.

haru... haha, i... do like her... totally not in the way kodaka intended, but i was like. OHHH OK HARU IS WAY MORE COMPELLING when i realized that she and angie are narrative foils. that opened my eyes to her character - i appreciate her a lot more now, and the line abt saihara realizing 'do you want to die' always being a joke made me smile. i also think fandom shows her a LOT more aggro than she is - her first, chokehold, was instinctual fear. "everyone is scared of her," once they know her talent, as she says. and in a death game... ofc her first reaction would be of panic... and the second - ffs, ouma just threatened them with a bomb! this girl does not hate ouma. she is the second to last, second to kiibo (WHO, IS A STANDIN FOR THE AUDIENCE, SO LIKE-) to finally be Done with ouma's bullshit. she loses her cool when ouma injures momota for the 2nd time. ETC ETC. and, she has to be deliberately manipulated, by shirogane to actually kill ouma. she does not for real hate this guy, she would not bully him in school, or try and get saihara to break up w/ him. lol

while kodaka's waifuism really shines thru her (he got angry that she wasnt ranked high in popularity, if you didnt know...) i think there's a lot to love abt her, even if it takes a bit to think abt. the things i appreciate abt her probably don't appeal to others. so, yeah!!! i like that she survived!!! i'm glad that she got to - live, and not as the ult survivor for 54... that she steps into the world with sai and yumeno. she is friends with saihara on her own, i'm glad that they have e/o, after everyone else... and that yumeno isn't alone, herself.

saihara deserved to survive end of story like beyond '(real) protag plot armor' - which ALSO isn't true, kiibo is the FOR REAL protag in the eyes of the meta audience - his arc is very grueling and long. it may not be.... that super in depth, but he is not this emo depressed boy who listens to MCR, either. he has a lot of trauma prior to the game - ppl don't talk abt his scopophobia often enough, and the 'eyes on him,' and the - the perjury, effect, has a bunch of eyes, investigating, judging you... while it is the same for aka - come on. it is very clearly intended to show sai's fear of the truth and of lies. he goes thru a lot of twists n turns, and it would've, killed me if he died... or, at least, if he died and the others had survived. either all of them die, or he has friends... which he does...!! altho the epilogue was SUPER CONTROVERSIAL in house, lol.

mora i NEED to start with inkpa because hello???? pa trying to figure out if ink likes her by doing the 4 signs test??? and the way ink almost obliterated wai with just her stare alkjd;lskjd like i’m so happy she was able to instill some fear into that man’s heart because he needs it. and the confession scene!!!! they’re just so cute and they make me so happy and i just can’t believe we’re being fed so well!!

now for the 180 with the mood because the family history reveal had me heated lol. pat’s father stole pran’s mom’s scholarship?? and then took on his father’s business so he didn’t even need the scholarship anyway???? that would’ve been my villain origin story if i was the mom so i can def see why she’s so triggered when it comes to him, *especially* since she was betrayed by someone who was her close friend. it’s just so frustrating to see how that not only affected her life but also their kids’ lives. and i feel like pat’s dad still doesn’t understand the gravity of what he did because he thinks “letting her” run her business and “take” one of his employees is enough to make up for it like huh???? i’m so—

and seeing pat’s face during all of this.. i just kept thinking back to ep8 and how hurt pat was when his dad basically said he was disappointed in him, like it really showed how much his father’s word affects him. so for him to now find out what his dad did? and how his own father’s wrongdoing is why he’s had to live his life in constant competition with pran & with this huge weight of expectations on his shoulders i just.. i can’t even imagine everything going through his head rn. honestly the day we see pat break down crying is the day i die because i don’t think we’ve ever seen him truly let go. even when he meets w pran on the roof he still kind of holds it in (which is very him cuz he always puts on a brave face for pran & kind of acts like his anchor) but that just made it even more painful.. the juxtaposition of pran’s sobbing and pat’s silent tears.. i’m not recovering. once again the preview for the next ep is saving my life because i can’t wait to see these 2 run away together. hope you were able to handle this ep better than me lol. have a good day/night~~~ and i hope you’ve had a good start to your new year<3 -🥞

Pancake!! Ahhhhhh!

This episode, I tell you! Need to rewatch it bc I'm sure my brain kinda yeeted itself out lmao

InkPha were amazing! The 4 steps that didn't quite work but backfired and Ink destroying Wai with her gaze and Pha being brave enough to ask her about it and confess! Q.Q Like, sure, we all knew Ink was into her, but I do relate to Pha not knowing and being insecure. But P'Aof did this and gave them to us!

Oof, the parents ... that's a heavy topic, but also done well? Because damn, they aren't relatable and they shouldn't be. Not to this extent. Like yes, what Pat's dad was shitty AF and I do understand why Pran's mom was angry, but the way she built her whole life around it? How she brainwashed her child to hate Pat and didn't even say the truth??? Which Pran probably would have been able to understand more than the business BS.

Of course we understand how Pran's mom was hurt beyond comprehension that her friend betrayed her like that. Still no reason to be such an asshole to her own son and his son.

Of course Pat's dad had so much pressure from his dad, he saw this as his only way out. Still no reason to force the SAME BS onto his own son and hate on Pran and his family like that.

Those two really needed to be told off by their kids and needed to see the disappointment from their kids. Like, yeah, this hurt a lot, but it was done so damn well and relatable and realistic. And it was most importantly for Pran and Pat to go their own way and choose each other again. No matter how much it hurts.

So, this hurt so much but was done so well and I am still not over it!

But yeah, Pat is keeping it up for now and there will probably be a day when he'll break down and it will be devastating. The way he cried in front of his dad, asking if his dad was the reason why he'd had to hate Pran was already heartbreaking Q.Q

Now on to them supporting each other and healing each other. I can't wait till next week!

I'M STARTING WITH THE MAN IN THE MIRROR...

I'm asking him to change his ways And no message could have been any clearer If you want to make the world a better place Take a look at yourself, and then make a change

A couple of points to make.

1. Loki and identity

According to head writer Michael Waldron, "in a series that, to me, is ultimately about self-love, self-reflection, and forgiving yourself, it just felt right that that would be Loki's first real love story." 

Loki learning to love himself, reflecting on who he really is as a person, and forgiving his past misdeeds, is the ultimate character growth, something that the TVA was hell-bent on preventing because it did not line up with how they saw Loki to be. Loki seeing himself in his mirror and realizing that he needs to change? Yeah. That's the big thing going on here.

According to Tom Hiddleston, "I don't think Loki's relationship with himself has been very healthy. Trying to accept those aspects of himself, which he's been on the run from, was a way of thinking about that in a really interesting way."

Think about how Loki praised Sylvie for being amazing because she's been running rings around the TVA. Again, it's a metaphor, because Loki has never in his entire life, honestly praised himself and talked about himself in a good and honest way. I will talk about how Sylvie is Loki's mirror and metaphor later, because this is important. It's also the reason why I started this post off with the chorus of Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror". It's relevant, okay?

According to director Kate Herron, "The whole show is about identity. It's about him, and he is on a very different path, and he is on a different journey." And it is! It's kind of how the saying goes, when one reaches rock bottom, there's nowhere to go but up, right?

2. "Love is a dagger."

Terrible metaphor it may be, according to Tom Hiddleston of what Loki says to Sylvie in Ep3, "They were having a talk about love and trusting other people, and not being able to either love or trust for whatever reason." The dagger, then, would represent "Loki's experience of love, I suppose. He certainly feels like it's not been something he's been close to. It has been some sort of illusion that he has trusted and been let down by."

3. "Love is… uh, something I might have to have another drink to think about."

Interestingly enough, I've had several thoughts on the relationship dynamic between Loki and Sylvie.

Yes, Mobius did describe it as "Two Variants of the same being, especially you, forming this kind of sick, twisted, romantic relationship", but even I'm having opinions that would start to contradict each other.

At first I went around saying that the dynamic between Loki and Sylvie are strictly platonic, and I pointed out that to me, the Nexus Event might've been honesty and truth, because according to the "Sacred Timeline", those are two things that nobody associates with Loki, and the fact that in that short amount of time, Loki realizing that he needs to be honest with himself throws the entirety of TVA into disarray. It's a chance for Loki to be honest with himself and really come to terms with who he is as a person.

Now where does Sylvie fit into all of this?

In my opinion, even from Episode 3, I saw Sylvie as a mirror, Loki's perfect metaphor. Why do I say this? Remember in Ep2 when she told Loki, "If anyone's anyone, you're me"?

I had jokingly thought to myself that Loki was just about to tell Sylvie how he feels about her and himself (because Loki talking about his feelings is rare, as he himself said, “this is new to me”), but then I thought a little deeper and went, “hmm, this doesn’t have to be taken in a romantic way at all, Sylvie is not a love interest (because to me that’s just weird, no offense, unless the circumstances were super different, under which I think it might’ve been okay then and depending on the situation, but not here in these circumstances) it’s just Loki admitting what kind of a person he is, and if he can be better, it’s just Loki figuring himself out.” (I'll talk about why I have conflicting thoughts later.)

Even Tom Hiddleston, in a recent interview with ComicBook.com, had specifically stated about his character: "It will be interesting to see what happened when Loki can't talk his way out of a situation, as is his dominant strategy in most encounters. I am most excited for fans to see what happens to Loki when he has nowhere left to run, when he can't delude himself anymore." That last bit with Sylvie? Yeah, Loki coming to terms with himself, being honest, not being able to delude himself anymore. He had nowhere left to run.

I know I did say that at first I did not see Loki and Sylvie as having any romantic tension between them, but please, hear me out first. 

According to Classical Mythology, PSYCHE is "a personification of the soul", which is exactly what Sylvie is to Loki. It would make the "if anyone's anyone, you're me" comment make way more sense. Remember how I said Sylvie is Loki's mirror? Loki getting this close to talking about his (what I see as non-romantic) feelings about himself, how he sees his own person, talking about himself in an emotional way, really admitting to his mirror that reflects the deepest parts of himself who he really was, and then just STOPPED before he could do so was so heartbreaking.

I had said that he was not gonna tell her he loved her because that’s so messed up (I get that narcissism is loving yourself but Sylvie is NOT Loki, nor is Loki Sylvie, they’re two different individuals), but Loki was just about to reveal his true feelings, his real emotions that he’s been trying to hide from himself all along. Loki can no longer run away (remember this comment from one of the interviews?), from himself, his emotions, there’s nowhere for him to run, it was time to be honest with himself.

Somewhere I made a comment that went like this:

Loki finally finding a connection with someone who is so much like him, yet so much unlike him is rare. ("Sylvie's not Loki. Sylvie is Sylvie" and "while they're the same, they're not the same" - Hiddleston / "She is him, but she's not him." - Herron) In that Loki has always been alone, and everything that he did was a cry for help that he never received, while Sylvie had been alone for so many years she's had to rely on herself to survive.

It makes sense then, that both Loki and Sylvie see themselves in each other ("I see a scheme, and in that scheme I see myself" from Ep2) and acknowledge that they are both lonely survivors who made it through so much, that they had each other for even that short amount of time.

That connection they had, that emotional attachment that they came to share, was not romantic in any way. (I'll get to why I’m conflicted about this, and why I may come to be okay with it, in a bit.) I read somewhere that the Nexus Event was not as Mobius described it, but was that Loki finally knowing that he'll never be alone, that he's honest with himself, which is something that goes against the TVA's dictates. THAT's the Nexus Event!

According to the TVA and Ravonna, Loki can't be caring! He can't change from being a homicidal maniac! He can't change! But we know Loki can. Loki himself knows that he can change. This knowledge and acceptance was enough to cause the damn Nexus Event, because the Timekeepers did not decree it! Even in Ep1, Loki declared that he would not let the TVA dictate how his story ends. It's clear that Loki's story is nt over yet.

Two lonely survivors find each other, so it's not surprising that Loki himself was THIS close to finally admitting the truth about himself, admitting and being honest with himself... until Ravonna pruned him.

Ravonna has always been pro-TVA and anti-Loki, so it's not surprising that earlier when she was speaking to Mobius, he's like, "Loki can change" but she's like "no because the TVA said so", so therefore when she hears that Loki is finally being honest with himself (through almost revealing his feelings to Sylvie), Ravonna cannot take it and obliterates him herself. According to her, which says that according to the TVA, Loki having an honest and real change of heart is the real Nexus Event and as such, must be prevented.

Now, about love, I guess, new to Loki as it may be.

Here's where I think I can explain why though I'm not 100% on board with Loki being romantically involved with Sylvie I might warm up to the idea, the possibility of them being kind of a thing. I'm a little divided on it myself, but here goes.

First and foremost, here's something that head writer Michael Waldron says about the possibility of a romance: "That was one of the cruxes of my pitch [for the series], that there was going to be a love story. We went back and forth for a little bit about, like do we really want to have this guy fall in love with another version of himself? Is that too crazy?" Maybe, maybe not.

You see, as you know, Sylvie is a version of Loki, but is not Loki. Mobius describes them as "Two Variants of the same being." Director Kate Herron notes, however, saying of Sylvie about Loki that "she is him, but she's not him. They've had such different life experiences." Tom Hiddleston chimes in with "Sylvie's not Loki. Sylvie is Sylvie. I think he realizes, and she realizes, that while they're the same, they're not the same."

But what about the love story?

Mobius concludes through context clues that Loki is "an incredible seismic narcissist! You fell for yourself!" He taunts Loki, "You like her! Does she like you?"

Here's where it gets interesting. Loki had reassured Sylvie that people like them don't die so easily, they survive. He had praised her for running circles around the TVA, calling her amazing (again, another metaphor, but I think I've covered that), after which she had placed her hand on Loki's arm. Notice his reaction - he looks down at where her hand had made contact with his arm, shifts in a way that suggests his surprise. He's like, 'Is this warmth I'm feeling? I've never felt someone's gentle touch before. I think she cares for me, is that even possible for someone like me?'

He looks up at her, and though his story differs from Sylvie's, he recognizes that though he may have suffered, she had been physically on the run her entire life, whereas Loki had been mentally and metaphorically on the run from himself. We see from the look on his face that though Loki and Sylvie had spent less than 12 hours in each other's presence, he's come to respect her and her courage to do what he could never have. "You're amazing," he says.

Michael Waldron continues, "The look that they share, that moment, [it started as] a blossoming friendship. Then for the first time, they both feel that twinge of, ‘Oh, could this be something more? What is this I'm feeling?’ These are two beings of pure chaos that are the same person falling in love with one another. That's a straight-up and down branch, and exactly the sort of thing that would terrify the TVA."

Sylvie's not sure if she's got any sort of feelings for Loki, but she does ask if he's okay after they reach the golden elevators that would take them to the Timekeepers. Anyway, after the time loop punishment on Asgard, during which Lady Sif tells him, "You deserve to be alone and you always will be", Loki realizes that he's scared of being alone. He hopes that there might be someone out there with whom he can connect on a deeper level.

Director Kate Herron points out, "Who's a better match for Loki than himself?" Or Sylvie, for that matter. But because "but she's not him. They've had such different life experiences," it would make so much sense and would totally be in character for Loki to connect with someone he sees himself in, again, metaphorically speaking.

This is the ultimate journey of "self-love, self-reflection, and forgiving yourself", as Waldron puts it, so for Loki to come to terms that he might possibly love Sylvie is a metaphor for accepting himself as he truly is, not what or who he projects himself to be. It's about being kind to himself, because as he reflects on this new feeling about Sylvie, he's also reflecting upon himself and whether or not he can keep running from his emotions, as Tom Hiddleston says. The answer is no, he cannot run any longer from his acknowledgment that he's got feelings for Sylvie than he can run from his own realizations about himself. He forgives Sylvie as a metaphorical way of forgiving himself for his past misdeeds, like admitting that cutting off Sif's hair was not funny at all. It would make sense then, according to Waldron, that "that would be Loki's first real love story." Not a story about a narcissist, but a story of identity and self-acceptance and honesty.

The fact that Loki and Sylvie are two COMPLETELY different people who are so dissimilar except for the fact that they're two lonely survivors, could possibly result in them having a relationship.

Hear me out on why.

You know how Loki had said to Sylvie at the end, "this is new to me"? He means that he has never before known how to express love and care because he's never received any of either. For all of his life, he had been treated badly by all except perhaps his mother, but as in Ep3, he agrees that though he's had courtships before, none of those relationships, none of it included any type of love that felt tangentially real to him. Loki doesn't know what real love is... until Sylvie comes along. She does not make him know what love is, because he comes to terms to his feelings all on his own.

Tom Hiddleston says, "When Loki meets Sylvie, he's inspired solely by curiosity." Herron adds, about the relationship, "It was just about giving it the space to breathe and digging into it in a way that felt earned." And I think that I might come to accept that it is earned, in some way.

Two lonely survivors who quite literally run into each other, who recognize each other for who they really are, who accept each other and themselves, and who can finally be truthful and honest with themselves and each other. It's not always a game of checkers or chess. Sometimes, it's a maze of metaphors and mirrors.

I understand that this relationship between Sylvie and Loki is controversial for some, cute for others. If I hadn't already made myself clear, I was never really against the pairing, just that I was never 100% sure I'd board that train myself. I was initially of the opinion that their dynamic was strictly platonic, but because I'm open to different interpretations, I decided to have a look at why people saw the relationship between Loki and Sylvie as a beautiful one.

The conclusion I came to, is that there definitely is more than one interpretation of Loki and Sylvie's dynamic, and that I'm okay with both. We've got two episodes left, so I'm curious to see how Sylvie and Loki's dynamic plays itself out.

Ultimately, this story is about Loki.

Loki has to start with the man in the mirror. The person he metaphorically sees himself in is Sylvie, his perfect mirror, and he's asking himself to change his ways. No message, no relationship, no reflection, no realization, no feeling could have been any clearer. So, if Loki wants to be a better person, which we know he can and will be, he will take a look at himself in his mirror and make that change.

aspects of vox machina I knew would be a thing but was nonetheless completely unprepared for

-guys they’re all so young and excited and wide-eyed at the entire concept of what they’re doing and don’t get me wrong, they’re still that way. but how fucking cool is it that the excitement of “oh my god we reached a thousand subscribers” or “wait people in the chat room bought us pizza??” turns into “oh my god you guys raised millions of dollars for our kickstarter?”

-I’m still not over level nine. look how much they can do! look how much they have done! (they’ve killed how many dragons?) and look how much random shit is in their bag of holding!

--and also, look how much they care about each other. Pike joining the party again was the sweetest thing in the world. they’re all just so comfortable with each other and it’s so fun and easy to watch

-okay actual character stuff though

-Grog. just Grog as a whole. the voice, the excitement, the heart.

--and the stupidity, my god, I know there was an entire one-shot based around something that Grog did yet I’m still blown away and delighted every time Travis just takes off running toward something he knows is gonna blow up in his face

-on a related note, Travis and Laura sitting beside each other. is she telling him not to get himself killed because Vex cares about Grog or because Laura is Not Having This Shit? I don’t know and I don’t care because either way their every interaction is a delight

-you know who else is a delight? Taliesin and Marisha. everyone at the table is so touchy-feely in campaign 2 and it’s genuinely kinda cathartic to watch, but oh man these two are already giving me the feelings. their little side jokes, the laughing at each other’s rolls, it’s so good. I can’t wait to get into some serious story shit while they’re sitting beside each other

-speaking of Taliesin, Percy is broken. I don’t mean in the ‘has a traumatic backstory that shaped his entire personality’ sense bc like. episode 5 still. but in the ‘built a gun, ignores cover, can obliterate enemies from ten years away even though this is a high fantasy game‘ sense. I love him

-Percy is also an inventor, which like, logically, I knew. he built a gun. and yet I was unprepared for the actor I’m so used to as the gravelly-voiced hippie gravekeeper just casually and poshly request to bust out his tinker tools and invent something while the others are sleeping

-which brings me to Percy and Vex, who are of course only friends at this point, but it seems like every morning Vex wakes up to ‘I built something for you!’ and a brand new, almost always devastatingly powerful arrow. “I’m gonna Hawkeye you out” is also one of my new favorite phrases. Taliesin’s excitement and supportive play style paired with Percy’s innovation paired with the unintentional foreshadowing of a romance

-also, just while on the subject of romance--look. I know who I am. a simple dumbass lesbian who sees two (2) amazing female characters and thinks huh, that’d be a neat ship. I knew--I knew--I’d be at least a little bit here for Vexleth. I was unprepared to be so invested so quickly.

--and it’s entirely my fault for going through their tumblr tag the other day, when will I learn

-y’all. Pike and Grog. cleric and barbarian, gnome and goliath, best friends forever and I have hearts in my eyes

--Travis and Ashley sitting next to each other are also downright delightful

-Liam as a rogue. Liam as a rogue who loves to charm people. Vax’s easy smiles and cocky wit and obvious love for the entire group. obviously I knew Liam was talented before, but the range from Vax to Caleb is astounding right now

-same with Marisha as Keyleth and Beau. which yeah, sure, I’ve talked about before, but goddammit I’m gonna say it again. the range between them--even with just how she’s holding herself at the table. bright-eyed and enthusiastic vs calculating and reserved

--and yet--and yet--you can see parts of Keyleth in Beau. the fumbling when Beau tries to have a heart-to-heart, especially early on in the campaign. the way she throws herself wholeheartedly into something with the chaos crew. and the creativity and drive of her combat. she knows what her goal is and she’s going to fucking do it, even if it means drowning herself with an umber hulk or staring down a hydra.

--which also means I’m fucking pumped to get to see little bits of Beau in Keyleth.

-but anyway back to the point of this list

-which is things I knew but am still amazed by

-which very much includes the fact that Keyleth is basically the avatar? why did none of you tell me she was basically the avatar

oh boy do i have some stuff to say about his dark materials ep 6

here we go again.

- the only dealbreaker for me, and the MOST IMPORTANT THING:

THERE ARE NO DÆMONS IN THIS EPISODE.

you know what this whole episode is about? you know what’s in the god. damn. TITLE?

DÆMONS.

we didn’t even see the dæmons get RELEASED. FROM THE CAGES.

IN EPISODE SIX: THE DÆMON CAGES!

everything else in this episode, pales in comparison to this. fucking. point.

I don’t care how little budget you have to allocate. I don’t care if it’s hard to animate. I don’t care. this was the veritable climax of the second act, the point we’ve been working up to the entire time with the gyptians and the north, and it’s all. about. the dæmons.

the importance of them. the connection they have with their humans. what they mean as literal souls and soul bonds. the vessel of self-expression and awareness and free thought.

we got a few background dæmons. we got Pan yelling at Lyra at an important moment in the story. we got the golden monkey. we got a bit of exposition about dæmons being important, supposedly, I guess.

why, may I ask you, did we not get,

I don’t know,

Pantalaimon reacting to nearly being severed from his girl?

Lyra reacting to nearly being severed from her dæmon?

she’s released, she gets up. and walks away. doesn’t even look at him. he doesn’t scream. we don’t even see him freaking out at all. just looking worried in the background. she doesn’t hold him. she doesn’t cry. they don’t even touch, the whole bloody episode. when he’s grabbed, they just fall over.

this was the entire point of the worldbuilding, man. dæmons are integral to this story. they’re the fucking point. they’re the climax. both of the first book and the entire series, at the finale. it’s all about them.

there have been so many amazing scenes with them in this series. the golden monkey, mainly. Stelmaria’s scenes. some of the early interactions with Pan. the butterfly dæmon. the fight with the golden monkey and Pan, and the golden monkey and Benjamin’s kestrel. they have the tools.

and they didn’t use them.

this was the one episode of all of them where dæmons, and Pantalaimon’s interactions with Lyra, are THE most important point. and they glossed right over them in favor of Lyra and her mother.

(and you know, I love that scene with Lyra and Mrs. Coulter. that was INCREDIBLE acting. these actors are absolutely amazing, don’t get me wrong. pretty much everything else in this episode was phenomenal, A+, beyond wonderful.)

listen. I love dæmons. I’ve complained about the lack of background dæmons before, frequently. I can understand not having them in as much for budget reasons, even though not having them around as much does drain a lot of the worldbuilding out of the series. I can look past a personal love for them.

but this was unconscionable. it basically edited out the entirety of dæmons’ meaning in this series.

this was a hearty fuck you to the original.

I am utterly disheartened by this. they had all the tools to make it exceptional. if you’re going to take on a story, you have failed if you don’t make certain you allocate enough of your resources to the literal most important theme in the story. this was a fucking shame.

anyways, here’s the other stuff I guess, as a postscript, because I’m just obliterated by this shit.

- Mrs. Coulter was incredible as always. and Lyra, god. a-mazing. their interaction after the intercision was some of the best acting I’ve ever seen. the progression of Lyra grappling with having her mother offer love and the switch to when she decided to manipulate her was golden.

- I adore Iorek. I love him. he’s perfect.

- Lin Scoresby actually had some decent characterization in this one. I was on board with him entirely being gruff and sarcastic until he said that stupid motherfucking line about love. so fucking corny and so fucking uncalled for. there was no development for that. everything else he did was pretty much stellar, I loved it.

- Serafina is beautiful and I love her and her interaction with Lin Scoresby was good except for that part. but she also came off as extremely OP with how she decimated the entire troop of Tartars. like what? she had her own squadron of witches with her before, where are they? ? there didn’t seem to be that many Tartars either, certainly not an army. I can look past this for budget reasons though.

- no I am not calling him anything but Lin Scoresby now. stuff it.

- the horror in this episode was EXCEPTIONAL. everything from the first intercision with the sister standing there and her reaction to the sound of it, to the part with the cliff-ghasts - incredible. bone-chilling.

- come to mention it, Sister Clara was one of the best parts of this ep. I was truly heartbroken when Lyra mentioned her dæmon and she reacted to that. that was a great scene.

- the electromagnet going apeshit was absolutely GREAT. that was an awesome scene, really horrifying and really climactic. great great work. that whole couple of minutes when the dæmons start coming in more and Lyra’s destroying everything are exactly what I expect from this show.

- Roger :C I love him too so much, he’s such a good boy

- do appreciate the few background dæmons we do get.

- the doctor was a really interesting character. I liked his characterization a lot. a good look into the dynamics of power and science and morality. and he was a fantastic actor, he felt like he was genuinely trying his best and pretty disgusted with himself. even the way he held Pan out away from his body like he loathed touching him.

- but also, Ma Costa got to snap his neck. FUCK YEAH. she was great in this ep, liked the bit with the children and Faa at the end too.

Autistic Caleb Widogast

Part One

Caleb Widogast of D&D web series Critical Role is widely recognized by the fan community as autistic-coded. There are many, many, many reasons why, and with the episodes numbering well into the dozens it would take several paragraphs to expound on on all of them.

So here’s the first in a series of posts doing precisely that.

EPISODE ONE:

There isn’t much here in episode one, but there is this:

Caleb uses stereotypically autistic speech patterns in the very first conversation he has in the show. Nott draws it to a close with “All right, well, that’s on the to-do list,” and Caleb immediately mirrors her phrasing with “All right, well, let’s get something to eat then.”

Later, down in the bar, Beau asks Nott if she is cold. Caleb misinterprets this to mean “Why are you wrapped up?” and subsequently explains, very defensively, that Nott is a goblin and obviously goblins are not well-liked in these parts and that is why she is wrapped up and Beau should drop it—which is, uh, pretty much the definition of blunt oversharing, no?

Caleb also, for the first time, shares his magic cat with someone else as an expression of kindness and a kind of second-hand socializing. Beau notes immediately that it’s “kind of therapeutic”; right away, Frumpkin is coded as an emotional support animal. (It helps that he takes Frumpkin absolutely everywhere, often choosing to carry him on his shoulders when he can just as easily pop him in and out of the general vicinity with a snap of his fingers.)

Still later, Jester rearranges one of the shops they visit, and Caleb grows nervous the moment he notices it (“A bit of nerves begin to brew up”). On the one hand, this is probably because he’s afraid of getting in trouble with the shopowner, but on the other: getting anxious at the sight of slight changes in your surroundings is pretty quintessentially autistic.

EPISODE TWO:

Caleb offers to give Nott his cat as a distraction from her urges to steal. Once again, Frumpkin is coded as an emotional support animal. And, on top of this, Caleb seems to hold the idea that—well, he helps me, so obviously he’ll help you too!

Nott reassures Caleb that they can leave the group at the drop of a hat if they need to. “They’ll never know who we were,” she says. “...Caleb and Nott,” he says, responding both literally and with a touch of confusion.

Caleb calls a man’s novel “trashy” and seems to realize a second too late that it was rude; he tacks on a very hasty “No judgement.”

Caleb compliment’s Beau’s muscles very awkwardly.

Caleb goes on to say, “We have been in the woods for too long. I’ve forgotten how to talk to people.” And sure, spending time away from society can make people a little weird. But needing practice to maintain basic social skills like complimenting people? Sounds autistic.

Caleb says, later, “I don’t know what you just said, but I am interested in books. Particularly in the arcane realm, but any kind of book.” That ticks two boxes at once: auditory processing troubles and special interests.

At one point, Beau references Frankenstein and Caleb doesn’t understand what she’s saying. It’s possible, out-of-universe, that this was a meta reference to Frankenstein not existing in the story’s universe, but consider—in-universe, Beau must have referenced the story world’s equivalent of Frankenstein, and Caleb did not get that reference. Therefore: Caleb is not only having difficulty following her metaphor, but he’s missed a pop culture reference.

EPISODE THREE:

caleb is nonverbal after he “gets over [his reaction to casting firebolt]”; he “doesn’t say anything, but starts pushing bodies onto the back of the cart”

stays nonverbal for A While; “during all the busywork, i’m not saying anything, but i keep giving worried and stressed glances at my little friend”

in the middle of planning, with zero transition or context, caleb goes, “also i have a cat” and doesn’t offer context til jester goes ?? yes he’s cute?

gets excited & dances in the street w/nott on his shoulders (stim!!)

nott, when caleb ignores jester in favor of reading: he gets like this when he’s studying. he gets very focused, it’s best not to disturb him

“i prefer him as a cat, to be honest, but in a pinch–” change Bad, cat Good

when jester braids caleb’s hair, liam says “it feels nice”; Sensory Good

“i’m a good talker when i have to be”; qualifies the statement, implying it’s an occasional mask he dons when Necessary

E4:

nott: no one’s going to be around to save you if you get into trouble caleb: i’m almost dead already nott: yeah, that’s not good jester: that’s not comforting, caleb

at the very end of caleb’s conversation w/the guard, liam says caleb looks him in the eye, which implies he was Avoiding eye contact before that

caleb, in court, bluntly: i’m a dirty hobo and i reek like yesterday’s garbage

caleb, abruptly: well, you know, this is very fascinating, but i have some errands to run. nott, would you like to run errands with me? we are totally coming back and not leaving on our own undercover

caleb calls the old shopkeep “grandfather”; he does this with other elderly folks in later episodes too [the woman in the melora statue; madam musk], even when he knows their names. seems like maybe an internal rule that he has to refer to old folks this way bc it’s Respectful?

caleb, overexplaining: this is called a bath nott: i’ve heard of them caleb, still overexplaining: a hot bath

E5:

caleb: before i go away, am i looking for anything specific? beau: just people coming caleb, echoing: people coming…

caleb ducks back behind a corner mid-fight & says “nein nein nein"; repetitive speech

caleb later ducks back behind the same corner & says “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”; Big Autistic Mood

caleb, on being reminded that people are dying: maybe i can put [turning frumpkin back into a cat] on hold, although i really hate to (emotional support animal + Different Is Bad + low empathy)

“we can do both, but there is a timestamp on the people. we should take care of the people first, because then we’re increasing how much gold we will bring in, because if they die then we will not get as much money for them if they are alive”; low empathy + extreme practicality
