Bad Girl Boogey

Teenaged director/co-writer Alice Maio Mackay’s Australian punk genderqueer take on the slasher film, BAD GIRL BOOGEY (2022, Shudder, AMC+), may look like it was made for a quarter, but the talent behind it is priceless. A mystical mask turns its wearers into killers not by making them kill but rather by letting them kill. In addition, it often imparts an unhealthy dose of homophobia, courtesy of the escaped Nazi who first brought it to Australia. That sounds like a lot of baggage for one film to carry, but Mackay’s style here communicates a lot with rapid images.  And the focus is less on the standard tropes of the slasher film than on the community affected by it.

Alienated teen Angel (Lisa Fanto) has no time for the adults she feels have left her a ravaged world, but she has close bonds with her friends — including party girl Lila (Prudence Cassar), trans recovering addict Dario (Iris Mcerlean) and gay boy Ashley (Steven Thai Hoa). When the killer starts offing her friends, she doesn’t expect the police to care about a bunch of queer kids, so she and Dario start investigating on their own.

With only $13,000 to spend, Mackay uses a lot of quick cuts. In places, they rush us through the standard slasher tropes, most effectively when the police question Angel and Dario after Lila’s murder. There’s none of the sweeping landscapes of the first wave of Australian films to garner international attention. BAD GIRL BOOGEY is set in a bleak urban landscape of warehouse clubs, ramshackle houses and sterile public buildings. The film is also shot through with the rhythms of bands like Alter Boy and Tears for the Dying. The only time Mackay’s style flags is in a sequence in the last act when somebody has to explain the nature and origin of the mask. The takes get longer, and it all feels stilted. When the killer is revealed, the homophobia underlying the murders is almost too baldly stated. But the focus on community is refreshing, reminiscent of the work of filmmakers like Gregg Araki, Gus Van Sant and Stephen Cone in addition to Mackay’s debut feature, SO VAM (2021), released when she was just 16. And even in her teens, Mackay has developed a strong stock company, with particularly effective performances here from Fanto, Mcerlean and Liwi Dawson as a girl who can’t even connect with Angel’s crowd.

Plot Synopsis:

Following visionary Sam's recent nightmare about the former Winchester home in Lawrence, Kansas, where the present dwellers, Jenny from Wichita and mother to two small kids, are suspiciously accident-prone, Dean reluctantly accepts to drive there. Dean and Sam reassure Jenny but follow up on the kids fear of a flaming creature in the closet. They consult Missouri Moseley, their father John's old medium friend, and together with the spirit of Mary Winchester, confront an evil poltergeist, but a second ghost intervenes and someone hides behind Missouri.

My Thoughts:

Please forgive any spelling errors, I'm typing this on my phone on a plane from Vancouver, where I've been for the last few days, back home. I watched out of order today, so you'll see me talk about being in Vancouver in the last episode notes of this post. Season 14 is Nic's favourite and I wanted to watch Optimism with them.

The vibes of this episode are great, it moves the overarching plot forward without losing the emotional resonance of the situation. John looms over this episode.

Anyone who had ever compared Dean calling his dad to someone praying is so correct. It really has that desperate but kind of hopeless vibe where he wants to believe he'll get an answer but can't quite make it. Something that hit me pretty hard in this watch was that Sam didn't know that Dean carried him out of the fire. This is a foundational moment of Dean’s life and set the context in which he'll relate to Dam for the rest of his life, and Sam is completely in the dark about it. And then later in the episode when Dean unravels the cord from around Sam's neck, the shot looks super similar to when Sam gets stabbed in All Hell Breaks Loose 1.

I love Missouri and I wish she had gotten to help Sam more, although logically I know that would have lowered the stakes of the show quite a bit.

I think the reason John can't see the boys yet is because he hasn't figured out if he needs to kill Sam yet and he's afraid that if he sees him and then finds out later, he won't be able to do it.

3x07: Fresh Blood

Plot Synopsis:

Gordon Walker is out of prison and out for blood, Sam's blood, and pays Bela to reveal their location. Meanwhile, the Winchesters are hot on the trail of a vampire named Dixon, who in turn has a beef with Gordon.

My Thoughts:

Writing this one in the car on the way home from the airport, again please forgive any errors.

Gordon is a great character and I had forgotten a lot about this episode, it’s a great one! I love anything that delves into how scared Dean is of going to Hell. It is kind of weird that this is more of a Dean-centric episode than a Sam-centric one, considering Sam is the Antichrist that Gordon is trying to kill, but that’s just kind of how Sjpernatural does it. Samgirls are so brave for dealing with this shit.

Dean continues to be associated with Vampires, this time in a direct parallel to the vampire that turned Gordon, and vampires in turn continue to be associated with sexual assault. Make of that what you will.

I love when a zealot of a hunter is turned and I wish they had played with Gordon’s inner struggle a bit more. Like I wish it had taken him longer to feed, although I can excuse that based on how established it is that the hunger makes you feral. I don’t like that they had him turn the girl, his backstory was so focused on how his sister was turned that it just seemed totally out of character. I feel like I read somewhere that the actor argued against it and was shot down by producers? I do think it does a good job of making the audience wonder if Sam really is evil deep down though, since Gordon is the Sam mirror in this episode. He was already going to kill Gordon before they even knew about him being turned, so humans aren’t off the table for him anymore.

The final scene of Dean teaching Sam to fix the car, trying to get as much parenting time as possible in before he dies… just brutal. And then they parallel All Hell Breaks Loose with him saying it’s his job to show his little brother the ropes. Evil show.

My Thoughts:

It was very fun to watch Charlie and Sam sit in a car in Vancouver while sitting in a car with Nic @weedsinavacantlot in Vancouver waiting to go to the airport to go home. Just a sweet little serendipitous moment.

Maybe Yockey is the funniest writer on the show, or maybe it’s the combination of his writing with Richard Speight’s directing, but the cut from “I bet they’re doing something really amazing” to them sitting in the car had me in stitches. The directing on this entire episode, including the editing on the previously on (no idea if the director is involved in that) was great, actually. Richard Speight is definitely better than Singer, imo. And Yockey does the reading. Bringing “Christo” back is hilarious.

Jack is SO cute in this episode, I love the little plan between him and Dean to basically make him a honeypot. It only works because Jack is so empathetic that he has chemistry with everyone.

I like the little thesis of the Charlie and Sam scenes, that you need a community that understands you and your trauma and your history. It’s great in this episode but actually makes me more upset re: the rest of the season, because they still fucking ended it with everyone alone. Dean didn’t even get more people than Sam at his funeral.

I KNOW Dean isn’t referencing his lavender marriage with Lisa when he says that love can get crazier than that.

Birthday writing poll/ fanfic poll/contest results

(Yes, I know that it’s the 16th, instead of the 15th that I’m posting this today. I had class on the 15th, hence why the post is a day late)

Okay, now that it’s officially a few days past my birthday, it’s time for me to give the results for this little writing poll/ fanfic poll//birthday contest/pseudo-fiction selection thing that I have!! Even though I’m a day late, I guess it’s better late than never for 

And as for said results regarding what it is that I will be writing next ....well, there weren’t a whole lot of people commenting on the post that I originally made with what they wanted to see (probably should have been a little more specific with the voting thing),  so I’m doing a first-come, first serve basis here, so there isn’t a whole lot of back and forth stressing or anything.

So, here’s what I’m writing first  ..... and it’s category four, which was voted on by none other than the lovely @anti-cosmofangirl , who suggested seeing something from one of my original works (aka the book or books I’m trying to work on)!  Just let me know what you’d like to see more from my either one of my extremely in-progress books: Sweetness and Nightmares or Bleeding hearts, and I’ll either put out a rough prologue or a character profile type thing for the characters I’ve thought of so far! (Maybe both if I’m feeling creative or machoistic enough)

Next up from category    (I have literally forgotten who it was that suggested this, and I am extremely sorry), requesting a character analysis of none other than a certain infatious  hothead that is never far from the pmatga fandom’s thoughts.....Lord Betrayus himself!! And it should be interesting, 

As for all the rest of the categories?? Don’t worry, I’ll be doing them too! Although it might take me slightly longer to do them depending on time, my current levels of motivation, and life stuff, but I WILL get to all of them sooner or later don’t worry!!

(Ooof....I haven’t done this in a WHILE, but here goes nothing I guess.)

So, as some of you probably know, I’ve got a birthday coming up in almost a week, and I’m going to be...21. Yeah.... It’s a little hard to believe, right? I’m officially going to be in my 20′s....holy crap. And while most of us are probably wrapping their heads around that, you’re probably wondering where I’ve been for the past little while. As life is known to do, it’s kind of been keeping me busy, and I’m still working on getting back out of my own head after things kind of not going so great for me on my own end (anxieties about aging and some other stuff...which definitely wasn’t fun at all) ....so yeah, things have been kind of crazy on my end. (But don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about my fic either, I’ll be coming back to it soon enough)

And in-between college stuff  and actually starting to feel  more excited about the big day, so I was thinking....Why not celebrate this occasion with a little something special?

It isn’t another contest in case you’re wondering, because I don’t think I’m doing a contest right now (due to recent world events and the pandemic that we’re still in, I’m not too sure if I want to save a potential fanart contest for a later date, or just somewhere in the year), but I still want to do something creative.... and what better way to do that than with doing a little fanfic/original work poll type thing     for the week before my birthday!

It works like this:  You guys can vote on what you’d most like to see from me, and whatever gets the most votes will be the thing that I next post here for you guys to read! Unlike a regular contest, there’s no real end date, unlike a contest, so I’ll play it a little loose with the time. So either I’ll close the voting the day after my birthday, or whenever you guys stop voting I’ll give the results!!

But what, you guys may be wondering, what’s the writing options here?  I mean, I have a few ideas.....here they are!

The categories are as follows:

1. A Betrayus x Valerie fic drabble! Because dang, I’ve been craving to do something with those two other than slow burn or having them at each other's throats. Gotta practice for the good stuff eventually you know? Anyway, here’s the proposed title for the fic.... Bitter and Sweet! It’s kind of a late Valentines day fic, focusing on some cute stuff! It’s no surprise to anyone in the Netherworld that Betrayus can get a touch....moody around a certain holiday (not such a big surprise here, but he hasn’t exactly had a ....great time around the holiday in the past), but maybe a certain horned girl can help.... that is, if she can actually remember how to work the stove.     

2. Character explorations! More specifically, pmatga characters! (Big surprise, am I right?) I’ve been itching to explore more of the world, whether it’s through some of my ocs (Valerie or Delphine) or characters we’ve already been introduced to (or in the case of a certain sister that was only mentioned in the last episode, yet to meet), so suggest away and I’ll do my best!            

3. Cuphead content! More specifically the reader insert type of content! I’ve got two different ideas, which both correspond to two different characters I’ve recently become fascinated by.... Backstage romance (A King Dice x reader drabble) and Something only we share (cuphead devil x reader). For this one I’ll just see which one you guys are more curious about, and then I’ll do my best to write from there! (And yes, it’s ironic I know, the Christian girl getting heart eyes over an animated devil character....)

4. Book related stuff! I’m planning on becoming a fully fledged writer with her own works (eventually), either mainstream-wise or self-published, and I’ve got two different ideas: Bleeding hearts (the name’s still in working), or Sweetness and Nightmares. One’s kind of a originalish work I’ve been sitting on for a little while (*Principal Skinner voice* What if I were to take the characters for my fanfic and just give them different names? Devilishly delightful..) and one’s sort of a middle-grade story featuring a girl raised by the Boogeyman, so chose which you’d like to see (or I could do both if you want), and I’ll put up the prologue for either one of the ideas, so you guys can see what you think of it!

5. Okay, I’ve got no real ideas for this one, but if you guys want I’ll start working on the next chapter for The Tale of the Horned Girl and The Ghost lord, so you guys don’t have to wait so long for it!

Anyway, vote on which category you guys most want to see, and I’ll do whatever category gets the most votes (although I’ll be eventually be doing all of this stuff anyways, sooner or later)!

So Vam

First-time feature director Alice Maio Mackay’s utopian vision is almost enough to balance out the rudimentary filmmaking in her SO VAM (2021, Shudder). There are moments that leap out with sheer joy, but there are also moments with bad framing and some really inept fight scenes. Gay Australian teen Kurt (Xai) is the object of bullying in his small town until a pair of trans vampires start taking his tormentors out. When an older, less-principled vampire (Chris Asimos) leaves Kurt at the point of death, his saviors help him transition into a world of queer, socially conscious vampirism. They only prey on bigots and abusers, calling their blood “swastika juice.” They also laugh at the fake depiction of their kind in movies. They can’t turn into bats or anything else, and they can survive sunlight with a pair of sunglasses. Their idyllic if blood-drenched existence is threatened when Asimos turns some of the bullies from Kurt’s school, setting the stage for a rather lackluster confrontation. There’s also a drag fortune teller (Etcetera Etcetera of RU PAUL’S DRAG RACE DOWN UNDER) who turns up for no clear reason, though she looks fabulous. For all its flaws, the film carries one powerful image — the formerly downtrodden Kurt’s strut through the high school corridor as he rocks the latest in high-fashion vampiric shades.

This is ‘Bo’ in 2021

Bo is 75 years old at the beginning of the series, while as it goes on, ey become the main protagonist in some of the arcs. Ey’s the character I created without having too much background, who’s roommate with Jamero and Simon, and had two great-grandparents that’s divorced, but one passed away. However, I don’t know how to write em as the focal point with eir personality, which is why ey’s with Jamero. Their story constantly clashes with each other, the good kind of way, because they’re close friends.

My series is sci-fi fantasy, and some spiritual because ey can see people pneuma without them telling em. Bo pneuma is barely shown or used, so we’ll never know what it is. Not only ey can see others pneuma, but also can force others to fully transform. Those abilities were passed down from eir great-grandfather to em. That’s much I can spoil it.

Appearance

Soft black hair and blue eyes, sharing an almost identical image of eir great-grandfather. Bo is the type to wear loose clothes but does enjoy putting on high-quality dresses during formal. People wouldn’t recognize em, sometimes.

Relationships

Jamareo - Bo somehow became part of Jamareo's younger brother, Hamadi, friend group during eir college year. Hamadi held a small party at his place, and ey was invited, to which Jamareo was also there without notifying the younger brother. Their interaction was none, but Bo became fascinated in him at first glance. Ey saw something in Jamareo, his pneuma, not one he had but two.

Their second meeting, it wasn’t pleasant. Ey accidentally saw Jamareo killed and consumed someone, which I wasn’t sure where it’ll goes on at this point. I might change some of their first interaction. But, I did plan for them to go and do things together almost at everything because they share similar tastes in life. Like his birthplace, Jamareo would took em to the Empire of Tuurst to hunt. Something his family wouldn’t know this hobby of his.

After college, Bo became a roommate and a freeloader at his place. Jamero pays the entire bill; even though Simon also lives with them, he wouldn’t because Jamareo pays him to work while living there.

Almost forgot as I wrote, coming back and forth between each section. Jamareo is an Overlord that Bo knew about, and I wasn’t sure how that information spilled to zir. Maybe he’s comfortable enough to share it, but I do know he told Bo that Eireann is the Successor of Empyropia. (She wasn’t happy that Bo knew it)

Simon - It was Bo’s offer that he should live with them, which Jamareo was reluctant at first. Simon is a scientist, and Bo wants a scientist that had the talents ey’s seeking in him.

The philter Simon created is valuable that Bo needs it, breaking and reconstructing eir cell. They’re just business partners who share the same roof.

Hamadi - College classmate and project groupies. They’re more like acquaintances during college, but never will ey ever want to reconnect with him throughout the years after college. Bo is aware that he’s Jamareo's younger brother.

Eireann Niamh Crassus - Wasn’t long Jamareo became the new Overlord on the—something, something, I need to find which part he overruns in the Nation of Empyropia—as he fell for the Successor of Empyropia. Jamareo and Eireann have been dating for more than twenty years, and Bo saw their relationship blossom as it continued growing.

Bo will hang out with Eireann in public more than Jamero did, so others assume them as couples. Ey’s a nobody, so Bo doesn’t really care what others think of them, except for Eireann, who’s less confident.

Brigid, Manfred, Diego, Kalha, Taylor - One female and four males, mostly in their pneuma form, African Wild Dog, serve and stand guard of Jamareo place. Bo will always treat them as pets, which annoys them.

Vam Meej - Bo’s great-grandfather, the closest person who understood em from childhood till her adult years. He volunteered himself to be sent to Eternal Sleep without em knowing. After learning this, ey felt devastated, without knowing why he did it.

He appears some part in the series before his passing. I envision, not likely, that he and Bo would spend time together or catch up.

Mai Li - Bo great-grandmother, someone ey barely know as a person and as a family. They met after her grandfather’s Eternal Sleep as I continue writing, thought of it as I went along this bibliography of Bo. Through tradition, matchmaking in their parent’s decision, Mai Li and Vam Meej were knotted together until they went on their separate ways. She doesn’t love her former husband but respects him as someone with wisdom.

Bo and her, I don’t know much of their relationship. Mai Li lives beneath the city, which Bo will seek her out for help. All I know that they sometimes don’t see eyes-to-eyes.
