Reading the novelization of A New Hope already changed how I saw Luke as a character but Splinter of the Mind’s Eye is going one step further and making me question the very fundamentals thought to be obvious about Luke.

Like, Luke is, for lack of a better term, a nerd. He studied languages and cultures -

“”Yes,” Luke admitted modestly. “I used to study a lot about certain worlds, back on my uncle’s farm on Tatooine. It was my only escape, and educational as well. This,” and he indicated the creature resting a massive long arm on his head and shaking him in a friendly fashion, “is a Yuzzem.””

“Empty doorways beckoned to him and he was tempted, very tempted, to enter one of the ruined structures to find out if its interior was as well preserved as the outside.

Luke wants to know about people. He wants to know about cultures and creatures and he wants to be able to communicate and…

He really just. Is a great Jedi. He jumps between Leia and danger and he befriends the Yuzzem the prison guards thought would kill him and he wants to explore the creepy abandoned ruins of a civilization long past and he uses Anakin’s lightsaber underwater to cut the stem of a lilypad they use as a boat and he comments that the rock formations are almost too beautiful to cut down and he knows how to work Imperial explosives and

Ivan and Mizi being described as immature and childish in their moments of weakness really do a lot to me. Each of their situations and reasons are vastly different but at the core, it is hard for them to express themselves like adults, because they hadn't grown up yet...mumbles

the lucanis romance pacing is kind of objectively terrible, no idea what the writing thought process was, but it’s so funny in-world that it basically circles around to a win for me

so y'all know i'm reading the lotr books in order for the first time and i'm over halfway through the fellowship of the ring now, and i never realised just how much peter jackson changed things around for the sake of screen-story continuity. don't get me wrong i love the films and i think the choices that were made were very good and a wonderful way to introduce the story to people who've never read the books before (10 year old me became entranced for this reason), but now fully reading the books has me going "oh so it was GANDALF who first brought up going through moria and actually aragorn didn't want them to go??"

honestly makes me wish they'd kept the book characterisations just a bit more because 1) they're fucking funny and 2) i have a lot more respect for many of the characters that i've often only viewed as 'ha ha' characters and that's such a shame (merry i'm looking at you)

Was just reminded of prime empire and how that was basically supposed to be jays “focus season” considering kai had the fire chapter, Zane the ice chapter, Nya seabound, and Cole motm- and well yeah, clearly prime empire is SUPPOSED to be a Jay season by how it kinda focuses more on his at the beggining but especially by the end where he confronts Unagami and has that whole speech/talk about being abandoned by your parents.

Thing is many times I just kinda forget that’s it’s supposed to be a Jay season because from what I remember he doesn’t rlly seem to have any sort of arc is struggle he has to overcome in it (other than uk, evil video game but uk what I mean- personal struggle) and by the end when he’s talking about being abandoned by his parents to me it feels underwhelming. It didn’t feel significant, it came out of nowhere. YEAH we do know about jays parents abandoning him in Skybound. But after that? There’s like NO references towards the fact at all. And it’s especially an issue in prime empire because they just brought the fact up out of nowhere for the grand season finale. LIKE?!?!

It would have been a thousand times better if we actually saw Jay reflecting about his birth parents and how he was abandoned. Perhaps in the season we could discover that has a huge toll on him actually. Making him doubt himself, doubting his worth. His desire to know what happened gnawing at him. Perhaps he drowns himself in video games to not think about it too much and that would be a cool way to tie in how he gets trapped in prime empire in the first place. It would have been great to see some actual GROWTH. Some actual BUILD UP. To that FUCKASS finale because ohmylord i don’t feel anything towards the ending of prime empire because it didn’t feel like a good payoff to ANYTHING.

I’m going to say something extremely neutral. The fantasy high webtoon is made for people who watch the show casually or haven’t seen it, and also for people who don’t care about anyone other than Riz. And that is fine.

don't have much to add here other than i had a lot of fun with this page. thinking up gerald crane's evildoings is always fun and i get to do a lot of that for DMPH.
