Based on the 1984 movie Electric Dreams, but I tweaked it to fit gf so much that you don't need to know the original source to understand the AU(but if you did, it's basically if electric dreams was a horror romcom)

mabill au = perfection! i really like the gender stuff you do with bill, is there anything similar going on here? i would like to imagine that being mabel is just adding another ingredient to the gender soup. yum.

Quick note, fandom's already using the term "mabill"—about 2/3 of the time it means shipping Mabel/Bill and 1/3 it means Bill-possessing-Mabel a la Bipper—so please don't call this "mabill au." That'd make some people refuse to read it because they misunderstand what it's about, while other people excitedly read it and then get disappointed by the truth. (It WOULD be a perfect name, but I'm not gonna muddle a fandom term that's already been taken.) We're sticking with Sparkly Coin AU.

I run with the "Bill's gender is triangle (it's actually pyramid but he still says triangle because that's easier for people to understand)" headcanon in basically any continuity I imagine up. In this AU, Mabel fully identifies as a girl; but as some of her premortem memories start resurfacing, she starts identifying as a girl and a triangle/pyramid, but being a triangle is secondary to being a girl.

At that point she'd be willing to take either she/her or he/him pronouns... but she'd be extremely leery of WHY you want to he/him her. If Kryptos he/hims Mabel, that's fine, they've known each other like a trillion years and what are human pronouns worth to Kryptos anyway. If *Ford* he/hims Mabel, that's a red flag—"has he stopped seeing me as his great niece and started seeing me as an evil triangular imposter wearing his niece's skin?"—and it would put her on edge.

(For my own part, I'm sticking to calling her she/her postmortem to emphasize the fact that the situation isn't "Bill has amnesia; Mabel's a facade that will fall off when his memories return and he becomes Bill again" but rather "Bill has changed and grown since he became Mabel; when she remembers her past she's still Mabel." Bill-Mabel aren't two different people who share a soul, but one single person who got a really weird fresh start thirteen years ago. When Mabel & Bill interact in canon, Mabel's talking to her younger self, but neither of them know it yet.)

In my notes during this whole season I’ve kept track of loose ends and just other plot points I think could make for a great senior year (which now seems likely that we will get down the line in the future) and this finale gave me almost everything I wanted and more so here’s what I think we’re gonna see (plus things that I just rly want to see lol)

-first and foremost, BARON IS STILL IN RIZ’S BRIEFCASE!!! the spectral mordred manor probably is not there as that was a haven sent out by cassandra during all the divine interventions in falinell and the bad kids dove in as a last second decision, but baron is still definitely there. ‘I am somewhere always close to Riz Gukgak’ and while everyone’s journey with their sexuality happens on their own time and Riz shouldn’t have to come out if he doesn’t want to yet, now that he’s coming to terms that his friends might not always be together in the way he wants to I think it would be healing for him to fully confront and accept his aro aceness and have support with that and realize that even if they can’t be physically together his friends won’t leave him for other relationships

-Fabian is getting a new baby sibling, but that is not the only sibling he’s ever had. James Whitlaw made references to his half siblings from Bill that he killed and ate, I am POSITIVE that at least one is still out there and probably has it out for Fabian (as Bill married Hallariel, raised Fabian, and dragged his ship into solace to give him a new life) and an arc where Fabian has to defend himself against an older sibling while growing to love his younger would be amazing to see

-kalina, bakarath, bobby, and buddy ofc, I’ve been wondering where kalina has been this whole time, and I want to see more of bobby getting what he deserves. Cassandra’s been through a fucking lot this season but her familiar apparently might be a big bad along with arianwen again so sorry cass but the cat’s gotta go. she still directly got pok killed riz deserves to hunt her down and avenge him a second time

-speaking of, Arianwens been making moves in sylvaire! Adaine and aelwyn will surely kill her but from the looks of it even though she got her magic taken away she may have some sort of power. Cant wait for these sisters to be able to live immortal lives without their parents looming over them

-BUCKY APPLEBEES!! bucky, a paladin of cassandra, gathering the courage to ask Kristin for help getting bricker and cork out of the Applebees residence, maybe moving into mordred and everyone immediately being enamored with these cute little boys who honestly might turn out to be mumple instead of wanting to attend the adventuring academy and Kristin being so happy they aren’t being raised in a pressure cooker anymore and affected like she and bucky were affected, happy that they can be normal kids (and in being around Kristin’s other sisters, adaine and fig, Kristin ends up getting that sister she always wanted in bucky too)

-I’m so happy Fig is getting what she wants and realizing she doesn’t want to finish Aguefort, and it would be awesome if she got a new character and the bad kids took on a new party member for the year played by Emily so all the intrepid heroes are still together, but Fig could be hanging out between mordred and Seacaster and leviathan and Hell, writing music and helping Kristin spread word of the cassandra/Ankarna pantheon through it, and since in sophomore year we saw Penelope dayne daybreak and Johnny spells all kicking it in hell maybe Jace (who ik was a minion mostly but hey he could be evil on his own) is down there with some other bad kid nemeses

-more Galicea and Sol. Sol canonically was all for bringing Ankarna into the pantheon of himself, his sister galicea, his other sister cassandra, and his son helio. It was Sol’s followers who saw Ankarna brought in as another god of the sun and brought about the ruin and corruption of Ankarna alongside the house of sunstone in order to get more power for themselves with just the one solar deity existing. Both Sol and Galicea (and maybe helio) have been hardcore shaped by their followers, Galiceas wolfish side being repressed by the high elf state of falinell and being brought back through wolfsong, and Sol with the human clerics of highcourt scheming to make him the only god with a sun domain despite him officiating and welcoming Ankarna as his sister in law through the marriage. Plus if we get galicea arcs we defo get Kristin and tracker messy lesbians arcs

-Gorgug perfecting his new subclass he invented and Kristin enjoying being student body president! She deserves it, I hc that the only academic sort of thing Kristin cared about before this year was the lgbtq+ club and now she’s extending that energy into everything with the help of Riz, who cannot get off of coffee someone help this poor boy. And since Ragh and shellford have graduated I want more Torek Railgrinder, she’s so cool let’s flesh her out more. Gorgug thinking about how to teach other multiclass barbarian/artificers and perfecting all his awesome inventions (and dating both Unit and Mary Ann bc it’s what his poly ass deserves)

Basically the potential plot I see for senior year is almost a mirror of sophomore year: baron getting out and fighting Riz and the bad kids defeating him for good, the bad kids heading to leviathan after hearing rumors of a pirate calling themselves a child of Bill Seacaster looking for Fabian, heading to falinell to see what’s new with wolfsong and tracker and maybe seeing some changes in Galicea or Sol, heading to hell and meeting up with Fig for a portion (she doesn’t go to their school anymore! she ain’t gotta go on this senior year spring break quest!) who’s been hanging out in hell, tracking Jace and other enemies, establishing her power as an archdevil of the first layer of hell, writing awesome music, and finally back to sylvaire to figure out what the fuck is up with kalina and arianwen and this weird new god buddy has and they all graduate and head their separate ways but they still love each other and see each other all the time they’re family and they’re badass and they’re perfect

Class subtext thoughts on Gatsby, Flatland, and Bill.

So broadly speaking, we've had some idea of what Bill's home dimension was like since the 2015 in-character AMA, when the idea that it was nearly (if not fully) identical to the world of Flatland was first introduced. During the Weirdmaggedon 4-parter, we finally learned that Bill had obliterated his home dimension and called it liberation. (From what I recall the fan concensus on this information was that it was a malicious act of evil on Bill's part -- up until the Book's release, I don't think the idea that it was a tragedy or accident ever had much ground to stand on.) Journal 3 picked up on this again when it established the existence of Exwhylia, which (importantly!) also reinforced the hierarchical nature of existence that Flatland presents.

I'll own up to the fact I've never read Flatland myself (it is on the neverending list of classics that I still haven't gotten to yet) and will be instead be relying mainly on Wikipedia and Sparknotes clones for this analysis, but the good news is that canon Gravity Falls materials have given us the basics of how Bill's home dimension operated at this point, and so knowledge of the work seems less required and moreso recommended. Similarly to Gatsby (the book as well as the character). More on that later.

To be more specific, the important info that Hirsch has given us about Euclydia is that it was repressive in the extreme. The exact ways that it maintained this are left up to the imagination, to an extent (e.g. there is no evidence of the upper echelons of Euclydia carrying out public executions against the lower classes, as there are in Flatland), but the Book does directly pull an image from Flatland that illustrates the class hierarchy there.

Since Flatland was written originally as a satire of the stratification in Victorian society, the work goes to great lengths to specify and elaborate on the different social roles of each shape (for example, women as lines, though the gender stratification isn't relevant in Bill's case). More relevant is the way that the work considers upward mobility through generations, and the fact that isoceles triangles (working class) are considered among the lowest beings in existence, just above irregular shapes. Bill has been referred to and drawn inconsistently as both isoceles and equilateral, but based on what we learn from Exwhylia in Journal 3, it's possible that this distinction is not relevant in the GF multiverse's reinterpretation of Flatland. I'm sure a part of this reduction of the hierarchy in the original Flatland has to do with the work needing to be at least somewhat accessible to younger readers, but it does textually ensure that, regardless of the specific details of Bill's geometry, he comes from a background where, in spite of his exceptional ability to see the third dimension, he saw those around him receive resources more freely. His singling out of irregular quadrilaterals reads to me as a form of internalized classism; he needs someone to punch down to.

He describes his regular shape as an out-and-out "power". Bill explicitly carries with him the classist ideals and values of his home dimension despite its destruction. The way he internalizes different ideas about himself and who he is is probably a subject for another post, but the point is that these qualities Bill is emphasizing aren't simply a matter of arrogance. Bill is trying to sell himself as a gentleman, a respectable individual from an upper-middle class position.

This is where Gatsby becomes relevant, because The Great Gatsby is all about a man who wants more than anything to cross the threshold of inborn greatness and become a true upperclassman. Bill appealing to his innate biological qualities as evidence for his own greatness relates back to the notion that such greatness is an ontological trait which cannot be given, but can also not be taken away. Note what he explicitly says here about the themes of class in Gatsby:

If you walk up to any college English professor and ask them what Gatsby has to say about the American Dream, I really do not think you are going to hear them say the word "bittersweet". The American Dream is a false idol and illusion; Gatsby himself is utterly miserable and meets a miserable end. There is nothing "sweet" about it.

At the same time, it makes sense that Bill would describe it as bittersweet, because for all his powers of sight, Bill cannot imagine a future where he is happy. Throwing crazy parties every night (for Gatsby at his home, for Bill on the Earth's remains), staring at an unreachable desire far out in the distance -- that's his end goal. He emerged from a position where he was repressed and since then his life has been a steady climb/crawl in the direction of power and control. Both Gatsby and Bill seek to reclaim a lost sense of fulfillment and purpose through this ascent, and both seek to become untouchable as gods are, but both are brought down in the end due to the consequences of their own actions, stemming directly from the violence they bring into their worlds of their own volition. In case you've forgotten, or if you've never read it, Gatsby's money is not clean. We may not see Bill use money, but his social currency is not clean either.

I think it's telling that Flatland can be understood as it relates to Bill's character through summary, but with Gatsby, there is so much subtle incentive to actually read the thing. From the GIF originally posted by Hirsch that I included at the top of the post to the PDF link on ThisIsNotAWebsiteDotCom.com to the fact that the gag in the Book itself goes on for multiple pages when it could have ended after one or two, the intertextuality is paramount. I think that's really cool. It's rare to see intertextuality this well-considered in genre fiction, and I think it makes the whole analytical process more fun.

MY SITUATION:

I am currently living with my family and we are living with relatives. My father has been nonstop searching for work and getting nothing in return. He will get interviewed sometimes and despite being more than qualified and the interview going well, he won't get the job. My mother is disabled and can only work part time but has also not had any luck getting part time work. I have a younger sister who has to be taken out of school and put into online school because we cannot afford gas to drive her to and from school every day. My mother just got discharged from the hospital two days ago after having surgery to have her thyroid removed because she had thyroid cancer. She's an amputee and cannot afford the supplies for her prosthesis. We have a phone bill to pay as well as a storage unit payment for a unit with all of our stuff in it that we'll lose if we cannot make the payment.

To make matters worse, my maternal grandparents are evil people (I can make a separate post explaining this situation further if need be) and had it out for my parents for months. They are emotionally and mentally abusive and manipulative people. Last month, they started a loud, heated argument, as is typical for them. It was relatively short, but eventually my father leaned over and slammed the bedroom door. Honestly, "slammed" even feels like a stretch. But my grandparents called the police and lied to them by saying my dad slammed my grandfather's hand in the door. The police arrested my dad over this despite there being little to no physical evidence and my mother, sister, and I all testifying that it was not true. This happened the weekend before Christmas. My great uncle was able to call in a friend and get my dad released from jail, but he's going to have to sign bonds papers tomorrow and we do not have the $350 they're asking for, so my father may be detained again. He is just getting his foot in the door at Wal-Mart and is waiting on them to call him to finish his onboarding process and this is throwing a wrench into all that.

We're trying desperately to get on our feet. We want to move in to a place of our own. But it's just one misfortune after another. We need money to pay for my mom's medical expenses, our storage unit, our phone service/Internet, gas, and now legal expenses to keep my dad with us. And that doesn't even touch on the car trouble.

How do you think an Evil Stan can exist? Like, a Stan that is obsessed with revenge and destruction. A Stan that wants to burn Glass Shard Beach to the ground and kill the people that wronged him, like Filbrick, Caryn, Crampelter and his two friends, The Sibling Brothers, The Principal of his high school, etc. And most importantly, so viscerally obsessed with Ford and yet empty of any form of love for him, filled only to the brim with hatred because Ford had betrayed him in such a way that there was no going back from it, ever.

Woah, that is dark, anon. And heartbreaking.

But I find it interesting that you asked me how do I think an evil!Stan could exist. As in, what could possibly make him that way?

I’m sorry if it’s too cheap, but I’d be forced to use Bill. In canon, Stan just forgave so, so much from Ford, so easily, and clearly loved him so much, that only a supernatural intervention could spice things up a bit, imo. It’s not like Bill doesn’t have any reasons to do that. We know from TBoB and the new website content that he absolutely hates Stan’s guts and suffers from badly disguised jealousy, but even before his defeat he wasn’t a great fan of Stan. He knew how important Stan was to Ford, after all, a particular importance he would never be able to surpass. It would be in his best interests to isolate Ford completely so he can better manipulate him.

Ironic, then, if his efforts have the unintended effect of making Stan obsessed with Ford, albeit in a very negative way. I think he could have warped Stan’s mind somehow, twisted some memories, erased some. Bill can’t just do that to anyone, he needs permission, and the fact this is Stanley makes things much more difficult. After all, even Ford believes in canon that Stan would’ve seen right through Bill’s lies and would never have made a deal with him. But I don’t see it as impossible, per se. With the right circumstances, right words and right desperation, perhaps Bill could get what he wanted.

Homeless Stan could be literally dying, for example, drawing his last breaths and with nothing left to lose. He was younger, then, too, and didn’t have the same life experience as old Stan. Bill would just have to be very careful in phrasing his deal. Perhaps he could say, “if you let me give you a bit more of determination [he doesn’t specify what kind of determination], I promise you’ll have what’s needed for Ford to be on his knees declaring his love for you!” (He wouldn’t even be lying.)

That sounds to good to be true, of course, and since Stan isn’t Ford he might be a bit (or a lot) 🤨 at first, but not if Bill plays his cards right and asks for something else out of Stan that Stan could reasonably give him. Just so Stan doesn’t wonder, “hmm, and why would you help me, and only now? For free? What are you getting out of this?” He could always make something up about being a magical creature (obvious enough just from his looks) needing a magical artifact that only Stan could steal for him, once he healed Stan from the brink of death and filled him with lots of... determination.

And am I right to assume that, in your AU, Ford would stay the same? With the personality of our canon Ford? Because if so, oh boy. I wholeheartedly believe Ford still loved him after the broken machine incident in canon, and very much so, so he would be utterly confused by this new version of Stan. I think he wouldn’t even believe his eyes or ears at first because his Stanley? Who was, despite “sabotaging” his project, always so devoted and loyal to him? He would be in denial for a bit. Once he actually accepted his reality, though, it would be absolutely devastating for him.

The other people you mentioned, I imagine, would just be utterly shocked and terrified. (I am thinking of a Stan who has actual power to hurt them, btw.) What do you mean, Stan is dangerous, now? Caryn, in particular, who seemed to have a positive view of Stan in A Tale of Two Stans, would probably also be hurt that her little free spirit sunk so low, now unrecognizable from the boy she once knew.

There’s no way this could end well.

Also! Perhaps you’ll be happy to know (if you already didn’t) that there’s content for a certain Evil Stan AU created by a stancest shipper, @ ahkaraii and @ leukaraii if you want to search their blogs (tag: #evil stan au), back in ye olden days. Even fanfics inspired by it! Unfortunately many posts are deleted by now, but basically it was an AU about a Stan who became a henchmaniac for Bill (my guy is everywhere!) and wandered across the multiverse torturing and killing all Fords he found, in hopes of one day returning to his original dimension and killing his own Ford, with whom he was utterly obsessed because (at least from his own, perhaps already very warped, point of view) Ford abandoned him as he was sucked into the portal instead. I think you would like it!

A timeline where Shermie gets thrown out of the portal by accident instead of Ford and Stan!

Just as I said in an ask, there’s two versions of this exact scenario that happened. But this one is more about the one where Shermie is included in Stan & Ford’s fight in Ford’s paranoia era. I thought out a few info to this :]

Basically as summarized, Shermie got in the portal as he was de-escalating the fight between Stan and Ford. Just when he calmed them down, the portal got activated, leaving Stan and Ford in shock. Then, Shermie gets into all kinds of shenanigans while Stan & Ford plan and handles the conquesences of his disappearance. Especially with the military and Penelope’s prying eyes.

Bill is still his evil self in this– using Shermie to basically guilt trip Ford through dreams and other methods. Though, Shermie gets on his nerves. Bill also calls Shermie as Pinecone.

For the ending: Shermie does return much quicker on his own and doesn’t kill Bill. Why? Even though Shermie knows how risky his circumstances are with Bill chasing him, Shermie is actually left in the dark about Bill and anomalies. Ford never told him completely everything nor Shermie saw how invulnerable Bill and his Hench-maniacs were. So he avoids Bill as he got home via another inter dimensional device. He is that desperate to get home.

That leads to Ford, Shermie, and maybe Stan handling the rift earlier than canon.

Edit: forgot to write in that since Portal! Shermie returns much earlier, he is actually almost 50 years old! Almost a decade younger than canon Ford lol

The Closes pt1: Dndads dance moms au

So I wanna be back to this again. For the close family, I think bill close did absolutely nothing. Glenn was as he is in canon. Morgan used to send Nick to dance and help him with costumes and all at the beginning. That time dance wasn't the worst. Since he joined when younger, he had Ratticus Finch (who does it for fun, they are a boss lawyer at work). So those were the golden times. These years were elementary school.

Then Morgan died. Around this time he has been promoted to being taught by willy (boo). Glenn is grief stricken. He wants to keep Nick in dance to keep stability. He isn't exactly able/ willing (?)(he wants to help but didn't realise how much it was?) to help with the costumes, makeup, emotional support part of dance and can't make it to most competitions. So Nick's stuck with the other parents for caretaking. And they were all chill. Nick's group and duet/trio costumes were fine since other parents were responsible for it but his solo costumes weren't that good since willy wasn't exactly making custom costumes for PPL who weren't the twins (the favourites). He would be mean to Nick about his lack of costumes tho and he was punished for it. And he would be mean about Glenn not being there. The other parents were iffy abt Glenn that time.

Since Glenn wasn't there at all, he didn't see the willy do his stuff (evil stuff). I mean the other parents didn't just sit and watch classes either but they were at competitions, or would be waiting to pick them up or something. Nick was near enough to walk home on his own or take a ride from the Wilson's. And Nick knew how much this was convenient for Glenn cuz he needed to keep working to support Nick and there was always someone watching Nick there to make sure he was safe. So he didn't tell Glenn abt Willy. He also actually liked dance. He was friends with Terry who was like tell him.... Please tell him.

His last competition was in Terry's high school and Terry broke a setpiece by mistake while working as a volunteer and Nick's arm paid for it. Terry didn't mean to but he was happy that Nick could get out as an excuse since Willy didn't want to work with him afterwards. Nick was sort of pissed since Terry seemed happy about it but that was due to him being able to leave. This is not the proper betrayal. That happens on the show but it gives something to the producers to manipulate to push them to fight.

Glenn was there, that competition and Nick wanted to show him what he was capable of but he got injured severely by the setpiece. Another reason Nick may be resentful. Glenn was panicked and sad and the parents organized to get him to hospital and the other parents got to know glenn better while helping and supporting the Closes during Nick's recovery.

Afterwards Nick started going to Jodie and Scam likelys studio, who is Glenns step brother on father's side here. Glenn and Jodie have beef so Glenn didn't send Nick to them specifically. But after knowing Willy didn't want to work with Nick, Glenn does what he needs to to make Nick happy and follow his passion. It's much better.

I'll talk about the swifts later when I can think and get some of the studio drama and hermie in.

Anything to say to sway the voters?: “he has gone through so much trauma. his father died (canon is VERY ambiguous on this) anywhere from the ages of 4-10 IN FRONT OF HIM IN A VERY BLOODY WAY, and then being told by the dojo he wanted to learn from that he was ontologically evil for having dark intrusive thoughts about killing his father's murderer. he is very much affected by this to the point he struggles to improve his fighting style because he is so deeply traumatized, yet he continues to smile, be positive, and improve bit by bit because he doesn't want to be defined by his trauma solely. he hates seaweed but wants to eat it because he thinks it'll make his hair thicker. he hates vain men. handsome guys are his enemy (because he has crushes on them). he is very much implied bisexual: he has obvious crushes on female characters such as juri han in the shop descriptions and mai shiranui in snk vs capcom, where his characterization is fairly accurate to his street fighter alpha 3 and street fighter v characterizations, he has a Homoerotic Bond with blanka and legitimately seems to have a crush on guy, and has a crush on the very obviously nonbinary robot seth. he respects diversity, and we love a woke quing. yes, i said quing, because he has multiple lines throughout the street fighter series, and elements to his character, that suggest he is nonbinary in some way. he calls himself "the ultimate bijin", bijin being a gender neutral word for a beautiful person, in the japanese version of a shop quote where he outright says he'd look hot as a woman. he wears chinese schoolgirl uniforms and stockings. he knows six entire languages. he's based physically off of two cisgender men but his personality and mannerisms come from an 18-20 year old girl that he (at the time being 23 and her being 20) has ship tease with in crossover games. he's a thilf in spirit, and he's raising his 10-15 years younger sister that in my theory could've been his biological daughter through some sort of means. he taunt a canon character how to speak english, japanese, and thai again. he runs a failing dojo (we love a failenby quing). he doesn't know how to pay his electrical bills. he's ambiguously level 2 autistic and ambiguously bpd and ocd with all the major symptoms of cptsd. he's schrodinger's fat/fatbait (fat in clothes, weirdly muscular despite the dialogue that suggest otherwise shirtless). he offered to tutor a teenage girl in his fighting style simply so he could get more students and look cool to others but now she's his best friend and he's afraid of her abandoning him. he taught blanka how to be a man. he repeatedly performs good acts of kindness simply so he can stave off his intrusive thoughts that he's ontologically evil and to make his father proud. there's so much more i could say about him but he is a character of all time.”

my takes on various popular gravity falls fandom aus, as someone who was around for pretty much all of them:

monster falls: i was always fond of this one because it did indeed produce a lot of cool art, and the idea of aus where characters are all various supernatural creatures instead of humans just always had a certain appeal to my younger self because i was always into fantasy settings with a wide variety of sapient species, and it was just fun to imagine how things would work if that extended to the ordinary townspeople of gravity falls along with all their existing supernatural creatures. however when i tried looking into this au a bit more i was admittedly a little disappointed by what the established "canon" of the setting was, which is why i think a lot of people preferred it as more of a genre of fanart than a specific setting with rules and lore and stuff. i wasn't that interested in a story where everyone in gravity falls turns into creatures one day because of a magic spring or whatever it was, but i liked the version of the background for this one that i came up with in my own head more. i was imagining an au where gravity falls is a town inhabited by various sapient supernatural creatures as part of its natural weirdness, and the pines family has some kind of hereditary curse or something where they turn into creatures at some point in their lives, like maybe around their 12th or 13th birthday, and dipper and mabel have just had it happen to them, which is why they're going to stay with the last person in their family who went through it for the summer at least. (it skips generations; their parents and grandpa shermie might have thought they'd broken it, but no.) this would be a very different version of the canon setting in a lot of ways and you could do some fun stuff with it. i also remember the au almost always having dipper as a deer-centaur and mabel as a mermaid, but by now i prefer the versions where she's a unicorn-centaur, because they match while not being exactly the same, and it fits mabel's canon love of unicorns. i could write my own fic about this someday, i really enjoyed imagining in that space.

reverse falls: this was everywhere in the earlier days of the show and fandom but it had definitely run its course by the time we were into season 2. you can tell most stuff for this au was made during season 1 because of gideon and pacifica being thought of as the main villains, and bill being portrayed as maybe a bit more plausibly sad and downtrodden. (we must remember he was only in one episode of season 1 and it wasn't even the finale, although it did lead directly into that, so he seemed maybe not that powerful yet.) you can also tell a lot of this was made by younger fans because of the charming brand of edginess it tends to display. (the designs for the twins in this au also seem like they're intended to be a few years older...while i do feel like a lot of their characterization was established by fans who were closer to those characters' ages at the time.) sometimes it didn't really feel like that much thought was put into the characters or story in this verse beyond "what if good characters evil and evil characters good? and most importantly what if good characters evil in a cool and sexy [to 12-year-olds. i hope] way?? and what if evil characters good in a sympathetic woobified angsty way??" i definitely get why a lot of people kind of hated this one especially if they were around when it was inescapable in fanart. it does make me want to start drawing out what my ideal "reverse" au would look like based on everything we have in canon now, because i think the idea of a dipper and mabel / gideon and pacifica roleswap is actually a lot of fun and has potential that most creators in its heyday weren't really considering. (basic concept ideas: stan makes a deal with bill after ford is lost to the portal for success and wealth and getting his brother back in exchange for fixing the portal, the mystery shack becomes the most successful business in town and more famous than in canon, at some point the northwests' fraudulence about being the town founders is exposed and they fall from grace while maybe mcgucket moves into their former manor after regaining his memory earlier, by the time dipper and mabel come to town they're the beloved heirs of mr. mystery while gideon and pacifica are just normal kids living in town, they find the second journal at the beginning of summer and things proceed from there, also bill is just hanging around the shack with his own mysterious motives and willing to cut a deal with anyone who needs it...)

transcendence: i did try to get into this one because i followed a number of people who wrote for it but as hana hyperfixates said in their video on the subject (of aus), there is a lot and it can be intimidating. i think the concept behind it is really solid though and i'm impressed by how much it feels like a deliberate alternate ending for the canon series finale despite first being conceptualized way before that (before ford was introduced, even!) gf fans do like drawing and writing about characters as demons and the idea of gravity falls' weirdness spreading to the rest of the world (again, pretty much the canon intended outcome of weirdmageddon!) is a great concept for an au that travels far into time and space like this one does. i like that most content i've seen for it treats this event less like an apocalypse and more just like - magic and fantastical creatures are now known to everybody, the world is different now, how do we proceed? at least that's the version i like. i didn't know that most of the works for this au focused specifically on the reincarnation aspects so that's an interesting dimension, but i don't know if that's what i would find the most compelling part of the setting if i was writing for it. also i do love how dipper and mabel's demon names, alcor and mizar, were basically handed to fandom on a silver platter. they're literally twin stars that already exist, in the big dipper constellation, and their names even sound kind of like plausible archaic demon names [they're actually both from arabic though], and one of them starts with m. it's perfect.

relativity falls: this one might be my favorite. it's a very simple roleswap concept but it has produced some of the most delightful fanworks i've seen in the fandom. we were 100% right to latch on hard to the idea of grauntie mabel and i love that everyone knew exactly what kind of cool old lady she would be. oddly enough though you don't see nearly enough fanart of grunkle dipper and i wonder if that's because people figured he'd kind of just be canon ford, without much else changing about his role in the story. or it could be that this was also largely conceptualized before ford was properly introduced or we knew what his dynamic with the other characters would be so you'll see a lot of stuff where the stans' names are unintentionally switched. but i don't think that's true for this one because i'm pretty sure it really took off after "a tale of two stans" aired. most works for it seem to be set in the same general timeline as the show just with the characters' ages changed, but i did see a great concept for it taking place in the stans' canonical 60s childhood with dipper and mabel growing up in the 1910s, which i loved. all the various takes on how the events of the show would play out in this au are also great. i love it. no notes

mystery trio: well, this one kind of retroactively gained obligatory au status after canon completely jettisoned any possibility of it having happened...but it was a fun time seeing the stories and art people would create for that specific dynamic, even if a lot of it now has a confusing name problem when it comes to the stans. (and if by necessity most of ford's - or "stanley"'s - characterization had to be invented, but i think they got him pretty accurately.) and with all the aus people are still creating, and the existence of a canon multiverse, we can still find ways to make it happen. we wanted fiddleford to have interacted with stan at any point. please. it could have happened. (i can spin something out of what i noticed last rewatch, in that stan, along with the twins, is one of the few people not laughing at mcgucket when he first runs in yelling about the gobblewonker in episode 2...)

then there are all the aus where different characters go through the portal or go back in time and various roles are shuffled around and there are a dozen different variations on one au that kind of started out as a fanfic concept, many of which i'm less familiar with. but i do want to read some more classic fanfics now. because there are some great ideas with things like the various timestuck aus, blind faith, drifting stars, grifting stars, the various portal swaps...i feel like in recent years there's been a surge of au ideas focused on the stans in different configurations and they're all super interesting. this fandom is endlessly creative and it will never die.

3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?

i have studied Gregory's canon character extensively and it's a huge reason why i love him so much (and why i so despise a certain fanon version that has eclipsed canon) so this is really hard. HOWEVER….. i do hate his canonical reaction to learning Stan failed his mission. i know it's just to make Wendy start to dislike him so she'll get back together with Stan at the end of the movie, but this was such an important mission that Gregory put so much effort into planning! it implies the death of one of his only friends, Christophe! there's no way Gregory in that moment is the same as the Gregory in the rest of the film to me. or i have to believe that's he's just SO upset that he's lashing out and his tone poorly conveys the true depth of his emotions.

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

can i say the entirety of Hell//park lmao. lowkey serious. i've spoken often about how HP was a blight on Gregory's characterization, interpreting him as a generic snobbish evil twink. this (or one of the many HP spinoffs that copy-pasted this personality instead of his canon one) was unfortunately a lot of people's introduction to him as a character, which means that i see many Gregory fans taking him one of two directions: 1) they take him the sexy sadist manipulater route, cold and dismissive, hungry only for power 2) they infantalize this version, making him more like a random xD feral wild card silly guy if you were ever in the Gravity Falls fandom, they do to him what people did to Bill Cipher basically. and don't get me wrong, i'm not saying i dislike people doing that! i love how insane the GF fandom goes with Bill but it makes sense for him bc he's a chaos demon. Gregory is a revolutionary freedom fighter with occasionally poor people skills. i feel like barely any active fans remember that.

16. What's your least favorite ship for this character?

i have one beloved mutual who likes this ship so i hope she understands but….. probably greg/stella. most bc every art i see for it ever is HP-based (designs and personalities) which i am clearly not a fan of lol. also, all the love to the Estella fans out there, but she's just not for me. which makes it hard to care about ships that have her.

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?

ok this is a little hard to describe but i love when fics show that Gregory actually cares?? whether it be for Christophe (as most of the fics i read are gregstophe lol) or about his job or a cause or whatever. i find a lot of fics are able to show him as a caregiver, but don't always show him caring. to me, that's such a core part of who he is. he fights bc he cares, he helps bc he cares, he gets angry and sometimes flippant about others bc he cares so much about what he believes in that he puts on blinders to others' (and tbh his own) emotions. something i don't like is when people do the exact opposite of this lol.

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

i do not fully remember what i thought of Gregory specifically, but i have such a vivid memory, right after i watched BLU for the first time, going onto [social media platform redacted bc my account there is cringe af] and saying how i totally shipped Gregory and Christophe and wanted to RP them with someone lmao now... well, i still ship him with Christophe so not much has changed there i guess. but now i like to think about him much more in depth than i did back then. back when i was younger, i don't think the fic i wrote really explored the actual characters so much as it put two guys through a bunch of tropes. nowadays, i want myself and the reader to really understand the depth of those two guys and why exactly i am putting them through certain tropes.

Okay, cursed idea for Bill in Relativity: what if he is a kid like the Stans and the Gems? Like, he looks the way he looks in the book (a child).

He could still have interacted with Dipper due to his species aging different or something.

I mean… that’s… actually not a terrible idea? I mean the diamonds are reduced to teenagers essentially in UF Relativity and now we have a younger version of Bill in canon (Baby Bill, cursed little fuck he may be) so… ya know I suppose it could be possible that Relativity Bill is just an evil lil kiddo with a knack for manipulating adults
