Problem is, they already do this.

And they already engage in escapism.

But the type of media that allows for escapism advertised to men & boys is either fascist fantasy or overrun by rightwingers and their bloody pipelines. Usually both.

While everyone else enjoys a cozy fantasy game, cis men are from a young age encouraged to enjoy shooters, war games and such. Heck even if the game/media isn't directly about war or whatever, it has to have bigotted undertones that get brought up at any and all points possible.

Take Prince of Persia Sands of Time for example, sure on the surface it's just a typical game about saving the world, but it's full of racist and sexist. The blatant orientalist and sexist aesthetic aside, Farah is treated horribly by both the game itself (she literally gets enslaved at the start of the game) and the Prince, but it's played off as comedy ("she might only be a slave girl but she was royal before so he can still marry her" such comedy, truely the funniest of funny.). She is constantly belittled, called a weak woman, at the same time she is also depicted as this devious ~ exotic ~ seductress just trying to manipulate the Prince by sleeping with him. And by the end the Prince still gets to kiss her (non consentially might I add) for his happy ending.

These are the games the first generation of young gamers grew up with. The same gamers that now talk about "needing easy mode makes you weak and not a real gamer" and about "Girly games not being real games". Can't forget about their temper tantrums over *gasp* pronoun options in rpgs?!

And the next generation of gamer boys? They get to play war simulators with realistic splatter (because seeing the enemies brains on the pavement is the only sign of a game being good🙄), they get to play games that make you feel good about being on the fascist side.

Boys/men don't get to enjoy a calm fantasy, they get their rage inducing multiplayer or their grimdark rpgs, and if it's neither it's still filled to the brim with subtle or not so subtle bigotry.

And this isn't limited to the gaming space either, films & series are not any better. Think of the average anime with a cast full of underage (or just underage looking (still weird)) barelydressed all paperwhite girls, who are all in love with the generic dude™.

Or think of any youtuber popular among men ever, it's all Andrew Tate esque dudes. Or PewdiPie type dudes making nazi jokes at any given change.

Boys/men don't get to engage in a cozy or even just kind escapist world, boys get highly competitive games or grimdark (can you tell that i hate this word?) that doesn't shy away from showing 'the real dark things' (and then it's just showing women and/or other marginalised people get harmed in graphic detail). And on the rare occasion, that they do engage with a media critical of such things, they miss the point. And/Or are welcomed by a fandom of others who missed the point.

Oooh Warhammer 40k is so great because you get to be an oppressive fascist prick, yeah idk how to tell you this but that whole franchise started out as a critique of fascism, the imperium is bad (ik shocking). Boys can't think critically about the fantasies they engage with, lest they notice... hey maybe this isn't all that great?

I like Rogue Trader, but I wouldn't have touched it with a 10ft pole if I hadn't found people talking about how, unlike other Warhammer 40k media, this game actually let's you oppose the imperium instead of only allowing you to engage in playing the hero of the fascist imperium. Warhammer is a good example on how NOT to depict fascism in media. The Imperium is undoubtadly horrible and fascist "but- but- but the aliens and heretics are worse and the imperium is against them so the imperium is actually good👉👈🥺 it's just grimdark and you wouldn't get it." <- 99% of fans and lore sound like this.

I think it's important for media to depict problematic themes, the problem is when said media is barely if at all critical of these themes and it's especially bad because that's the only media men are encouraged to engage in and it. Especially in todays day and age, a lack of media literacy is ever prevelent and encouraged. i know this aunty who happens to be a homemaker and perhaps she is the only woman in my parents' social circle who is not financially independent. apparently she has never been very good academically and "chose" to be a homemaker. but her street smarts are absolutely off the roof. she has the highest emotional intelligence that i have ever encountered. she has a great sense of aesthetics. she has amazing people skills. her home is always impeccable. she’s a brilliant cook. her husband also has absolutely no idea about the functioning of the household because she has handled it so well. might i add she is also naturally very conventionally attractive. even at the age of around 50 she looks like she’s in her early 30s at best. this woman is the ideal tradwife by any standards.

her husband is also quite nice to her. always acknowledges her role in taking care of his household and his children. he’s generally one of the nicest and kindest men i’ve ever come across tbh. but despite all his niceness and kindness there is the occasional wife joke. and after all the emotional and unpaid labour she has put into their lives, it is his house after all. there is an obvious power dynamic where she constantly acknowledges her husband as someone she depends on, which is obviously true because she has no monetary independence. also, despite how smartly she manages the household, there are always jokes about how dumb she is in every social gathering and it is extremely humiliating to say the least.

this couple has a daughter who is in her late 20s now. she refuses to get married. now this aunty's in-laws refuse to get off her back because apparently she has failed as a mother because her daughter refuses to get married. aunty is often insulted about this in gatherings. her father in law once reprimanded her saying that she had one job staying at home and she couldn’t even do it properly. obviously, she was pissed off and answered back saying her husband was an absent father altogether. surprise surprise the husband started yelling at her in front of everyone saying that he had to break his back working for his wife was too stupid to get a job.

i’m sure these fights have escalated in private because recently aunty had a talk with me saying that i must earn my own living no matter what. this is the first time ever. we’re pretty close and she never said anything of this kind. she has also stopped pestering her daughter to get married and recently admitted that she is right about not wanting to get married altogether. i have also witnessed a recent drastic change in her personality lately. she isn’t as chirpy as she had always been.

now i do not know what is going on with her behind closed doors. but what i do know is that she has nowhere to escape because she has no monetary support.

Duke and Cass have a theme song because they are besties and that theme song is black and yellow by Wiz Khalifa whenever it plays they drop everything to rap to each other and if anyone turns it off before it finishes they start it again even louder it becomes a great distraction technique for other batfamily members. they chose the song because of their uniforms but the first time a civilian sees how enthusiastic they are about the song they draw a different conclusion and they find it so funny that they definitely have to keep it as their theme song from now on

Duke lives a no shoes in the house life no matter who’s house it is or what everyone else is doing

Duke considers it a public service to provide Babs with entertainment for when Oracle hours a slow she agrees and doesn’t snitch on just how much shit Duke starts so he can get away with even more

Duke joins Jason and Alfred’s book club and the first book he picks is Beloved because like they’re in this big old gothic manor respect the aesthetic

One time Bruce walks passed Duke on ft to his friends and he’s performing “Wisdom” and Bruce thinks it’s something Duke came up with himself and is trying to be a supportive dad and is like “that’s great son” with a really strained smile and Duke just sticks to the bit like “you really think so?” bruce even more pained “yeah it’s amazing”

Nyx is an interesting case! She’s not a Titan, technically, but a primordial goddess (and is described as such by both the game and mythological sources afaik). The primordials were the first generation of gods who sprang directly from Chaos; two of them, Uranus and Gaia, gave birth to the Titans, and two of them (Cronus and Rhea) gave birth to the Olympians.

As far as I know, Nyx is the only primordial we’ve met so far in the games. The Olympians and the Chthonic gods have an Ancient Greek aesthetic (naturally) and the Titans have an Ancient Egyptian aesthetic and Chaos has . . . whatever Chaos has, but it remains to be seen if the primordials would have their own visual style. It’s hard to draw any conclusions about them based on Nyx alone; she does dress like the other gods, but that could just be her attempting to fit in at her workplace, since she seems to not want to make waves.

The eyes are also interesting, because the titans don’t have pupils, and neither does Chaos (I think), but Nyx does. Maybe it skipped a generation?

it’s such a minor thing but it really helps convey the sense that these are a different breed of god: more ancient, more primal, and more distant from humanity than their descendants. No coincidence either, I think, that their costumes look more Ancient Egyptian than Ancient Greek, Chronos’s especially.

Even their bodies seem less organic than those of the Olympians. Chronos looks like he’s made of black marble veined with gold, Selene’s cheekbones could cut glass, and Hecate’s abs are literally chiseled. They’re just as beautiful as the other gods, but they’re unsettling too.

(I’m also obsessed with the fact that the Titan of Time has a literal hourglass figure. Love that for him)

Wow I’ve had this account for like three years and I’m finally posting art. Yeah anyway I’m late to the party because I couldn’t come up with designs I liked but here are my Hazbin Hotel redesigns! Please note that these are just for fun; I’m not trying to be animator-friendly, I don’t think my designs are objectively better than Vivzie’s, and I don’t even think they’re that good in general. I’m just seeing how I personally would draw these characters.

Charlie: Tbh I don’t have much to say about her except that I wanted her to stand out the most, so I gave her the brightest colors. I also gave her more of an apple body shape because she’s the apple of her dad’s eye, lol.

Vaggie: Okay listen. I KNOW she’s not actually a moth demon, but the chest fluff was fun. Plus, in my version of the show, it takes longer for her to meet Charlie, so she puts together a demon disguise. I’m imagining a scene where her chest fluff is off and Charlie comes into the room like “???” and Vaggie’s like “Uhhhhhhh I shaved.” Plus I gave her her pastels from the pilot because man I loved her pastels.

Angel: Basically, I don’t know how to read. I thought jumping spiders have four eyes, but it’s actually four PAIRS of eyes, so. Just pretend the other ones are closed all the time. I also gave him more of his mobster aesthetic back bc I love his little fedora. I demand more time with Angel in a fedora.

Niffty: Yeah I KNOW she’s from the fifty’s but then I remembered Niffty’s supposed to be a bug, and beehives were a hairstyle in the 60s, so. There ya go. She can still have that housewife aesthetic though so it’s fine. Also she calls people “hun” and is generally a “busy bee.” Also she has a hidden stinger and might secretly be a wasp.

Alastor: First and foremost got rid of that FUCKASS BOB LMAO. I’m so sorry, I do love the bob but I can’t take him seriously. I also (hopefully) made him more obviously a POC, and gave him a more gray/brown color pallet because, y’know, the 30s. Also hooves.

Husk: He’s not here because I’d do the same design as everyone else. Husk has a beer belly change my mind.

Question. How do you think the TFP bots each find the squishies that are humans look. Like aesthetically. Which ones find them cute or gross or funny looking? Cause in the Scraplet episode, Ratchet said “Typically I find your fleshiness your least engaging qualities.” Meaning that Ratchet find the humans gross to some extent, meaning that the Autobots does have aesthetic opinions about the humans. And it seems like everyone got different opinions. So what’s your head canon for each of their opinions?

Ooooooh now this is a question I will happily answer!

Ratchet: His views on humans and squishies in general is summed up to GROSS. He sees humans as essentially a bunch of organs in a poorly made plastic bag walking around on stilts. They are worse than hairless cats in his optics. They may be nice enough, but he would prefer to poke them with sticks or handle them with a hazmat suit if given a choice. He's warmed up to them, but will never find them particularly appealing. Interesting? Yes. Appealing? Primus no.

Bumblebee: Bumblebee thinks humans are a little unsettling, but he appreciates them in the way one would a pet tarantula. He can find something to see as appealing in them, although as a general rule he is not particularly enthralled with them. He is fond of human eyes, largely because their pupils dilate a great deal like how his optics cycle. He also finds it fascinating how many colors humans can have their eyes up being.

Arcee: She sits in the same boat as Ratchet for the most part. However she has one aspect of humanity that she is surprisingly fond of. She thinks human hair is quite "cute" in a sense. It reminds her somewhat of stories of Solus and she has always found it fun how humans can style their hair in so many unique ways. She has even gone so far as to ask June to teach her how to braid hair simply because Arcee also finds the texture of hair to be facinating.

Bulkhead: His thoughts on humanity can be summed up simply with: Smol Beans. He thinks they are adorable in the way one would look at a mouse and think it cute. Sure humans can do gross things like execrate and create strange internal liquids and sounds, but they are just so small. He can't help but find that fact appealing.

Wheeljack: He is neither grossed out or really invested in humans. He could care less what they look like. He's been everywhere and seen everything, so very little bothers him anymore when meeting new races. He does think that human teeth are interesting though. Cybertronians have their own version of the mouth bones, but humans growing the mouth bones and then having a few sets of them is something he just thinks is rather inspiring.

Smokescreen: He... doesn't like humans. He's in Ratchet's boat, but he's a lot less tactful in his outward reactions. His first few weeks on Earth involved a lot of gagging at humans as a whole. Squishies are not his cup of tea, but he's learned to handle it for the most part. So long as the squishes are clothed reasonably, he can pretend they are armored and ignore the fact that they are walking bags of bits and bone.

Optimus: He doesn't mind humanity. He doesn't think they are physically appealing in any real regard, but he admires their minds. Such small creatures holding hope and intellect on par with the more technological races is something he finds impressive. He also holds an appreciation for their voices simply because they are clear and without complication. It is new, and for that reason he finds it beautiful in a sense.

Ultra Magnus: He doesn't like humans. Period. He tolerates them for the sake of the team and negotiations, and he may be appreciative of human comrades and friends. But the species as a whole? He is not fond of them. He is largely more confused than anything else. He has no idea how such a fleshy and delicate species lasted so long. But he has largely shrugged it off and moved on with life.

May I propose that for a fun twist, that when Vaggie goes dress shopping with her mamá and hermanas she tries every single thing but the white just gives her the ick reminding her of Heaven a bit too much. So Carmilla picks out something unconventional for her. A red and black wedding dress…one that has a slit going up to her thigh that shows off the black lacey wedding garter.

Before meeting Charlie, the thought of "marriage" and "Vaggie" in the same sentence had never computed in Vaggie's mind. Even when she and Charlie had started dating, she hadn't been sure marriage was in the stars for her. It seemed like something other people did, but not her. But then Charlie had proposed to her, and Vaggie's entire outlook had been turned on its head. Vaggie had of course said yes, and now it's up to her to figure out what that means for herself.

The only problem is, Vaggie has no idea how to plan for a wedding, or what to even wear, for that matter. She's never been to one, and has no idea what the ceremony even entails. Thankfully, she now has a mother who had been married at one point when she was alive, and two older sisters more than willing to provide an...age-appropriate opinion, so that Carmilla doesn't get carried away, as mothers are often wont to do.

Don't get her wrong, Vaggie values Carmilla's opinion...she just thinks Odette and Clara might provide some much-needed...perspective. Carmilla was married a long time ago...and times have changed since then.

Case in point: Carmilla is old-school, and drags Vaggie, who is very nearly on the verge of puking, through a boutique stacked floor to ceiling with the most gaudy white and white-adjacent wedding gowns Vaggie thinks she's ever seen. Carmilla says it's tradition, and just the way things are usually done. White has been the color of choice for brides for generations of women -- mostly for reasons like tradition, symbolism, personal preference, and just carrying down the same outfits from generation to generation.

The only problem is, Vaggie hates white. Hates it. It reminds her of Heaven and empty platitudes and purity culture and asshole nobles who had called her and the other Exorcists "ruffians" for not embracing the typical snow-white and pastel attire adorned by almost everyone else up there.

Vaggie tries on a few white and lighter-colored dresses, because she loves Carmilla, and a part of her really wants Carmilla's approval in this. But after about the fourth or fifth one, she can feel the bile creeping up the back of her throat at the thought of trying on another. When Carmilla tries to shove the next dress into her arms, Vaggie puts her foot down.

"Mama!" Vaggie huffs, pushing the next dress away. "Look...I really appreciate you wanting to help me, but I just don't like any of this stuff. Isn't there something that doesn't make me look so...angelic?"

"Give it up, Mama," Clara says, doing her best not to laugh at Carmilla's "How-Dare-You!" expression. Odette covers her mouth in amusement, also trying not to laugh. The overlord is simply doing her best...but Carmilla can be a little overbearing when it comes to shopping with her daughters. She has very strong opinions. Odette and Clara had tried to warn Vaggie beforehand, but the fallen angel is clearly discovering it now.

Carmilla sighs heavily. "All right. What colors do you want?"

Vaggie twiddles her fingers. It's a little embarrassing...but ever since meeting Charlie, the red aesthetic just does it for her. They both wear it so often at the hotel, that it's just become a part of her outfit rotation. She mentions to Carmilla, "Something red?"

Carmilla, "Hmmms" under her breath, looking around the store until something catches her eye. She then drags Clara and Odette along with her, as if to gauge their opinion on whatever she's found. A few minutes later, her mother and sisters return with a few different pieces. Carmilla likes one in particular more than the others...but again, Odette and Clara override her, saying there's way too many sequins and lace, and it's not flattering on Vaggie at all. They make their own suggestions, taking Vaggie's preferences into consideration.

Ultimately, Vaggie settles on a gorgeous red wedding dress, with black around the bust and inner lining, and a slit going up the side to expose a black lace garter underneath. Vaggie blushes to herself, just knowing instinctively Charlie will love it. Charlie loves red on her. She makes a mental note to help Charlie find a sexy red suit to match.

Odette and Clara go on the hunt for some matching accessories, and Vaggie honestly just wants to hug the two of them. Carmilla means well...and she did manage to find a pair of banger shoes to go along with the dress...but her sisters had really stepped up for her, in more ways than one. All in all, the family works together to make this process as enjoyable as possible, and come away with something that Vaggie, and Charlie, will appreciate for the rest of their lives.

Vaggie decides that even though she isn't much of a shopper, it's nice to be able to spend time together as a family like this. Even with all the little quirks and annoyances that go along with it. She will take the good and the bad. Because it's all part and parcel of finally having what she's always wanted most -- people who love her.

there's definitely a noticeable difference in style/quality of some of these just due to time between each design and/or how i was feeling at the time of drawing them (these hot and rainy summer months have been super rough on me)

starting off with asta, a husky/coyote mutt!! :D in my au, devil users end up becoming hybrids of whatever their devil is. so since liebe is a coyote, that's what asta is too!! (also, i haven't drawn him yet, but yuno is a malamute :D similar looking breeds but different since they're not actually related!)

here's finral, he's a shetland sheepdog!! gentle and sweet and always trying to herd his people together :) you might notice that with some of my designs, i end up doing extra scarring; that's usually just personal headcanons, as i think some injuries would be too grievous to fully heal. though some (for instance, gauche) don't have a canon story behind them, i just think they're fitting

vanessa, who's a cavalier king charles spaniel!! her ears sorta blend into her hair lol, i had an alternate version where they were the same darker brown as her fur but i decided that them blending in looked better and fit the breed standard as well.

gauche, the ever wary american akita!! being a fiercely loyal and protective breed, but aloof and suspicious of strangers.

then there's grey, who's a long-haired chihuahua!! sweet and skittish HEHE, also i haven't drawn it yet but i've always imagined her big transformation disguise that she's first introduced as to be a rottweiler LOL

next up is luck, a jack russell terrier!! i've always thought this was a very fitting breed pick, intelligent but highly energetic and a little mischievous !!!

and of course, magna is never far behind luck; he's a dobermann pinscher!! similar to luck in energy and intelligence, but even more fiercely protective of his loved ones.

GORDON!!! actually one of my favourite black clover characters, he's a dalmatian not only because of the fitting aesthetic, but also because of his kind and sensitive personality!

the masked supermage zora, a german shepherd! watchful and sometimes stubborn but loyal nonetheless made this pick fairly easy to come to. though, before getting to see more of him, my initial pick was actually a kai ken!

charmy's design is one that i'm the most proud of for sure; i mentioned in an earlier post that the different peoples are different species of animals. well charmy is a half toy poodle, half american badger!! i thought a badger was a VERY fitting pick, as they are generally unbothered by much unless their food is threatened LOL

and finally, lastly (for now) is nero!! she's a bull terrier, but i really wanted to keep her twin tails from her anti-bird form! her outfit is definitely the one i edited the most, i just wanted to give her something more practical out of personal preference.

additionally, henry is an old english sheepdog, nacht is a black norwegian elkhound/fox, and yami is a wolfdog!

Hello everyone! I've been observing closely all the winners of the Miss Universe beauty pageant from this year and will soon be releasing an analysis of the most common Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars, and Nakshatra placements of as many contestants as possible, but not all unfortunately, since not all of them have their birthday information within easy access.

Miss Universe Ukraine 2024 - Alina Ponomarenko

There are some countries that are still pending on revealing their winners, but I will be giving a preview of one of the contestants whose entire birth chart and timing is available (provided by her through her social media account), and will be going over her specific type of beauty.

First thing I noticed was Ketu conjunct her ASC in Scorpio, specifically Anuradha nakshatra. Along with Pluto being placed in here as well.

Women with Ketu influence in their chart often have a very mysterious and alluring type of beauty that makes you feel very far away from the native. As if you're always staring from afar, but can't ever get close enough. Ketu is a co-ruler of Scorpio, so the description mentioned earlier is almost maximized with her due to the comfort of Ketu in this sign. Usually, one of the most appealing features in on their bodies, and not necessarily their faces or heads, since Ketu is headless.

Pluto being here adds on to her natural sex appeal by making her seem "dangerous" or "naughty" in some way. As if she's hiding secrets that no one else will ever uncover, and even her smile conveys the same as well.

In general, Anuradha ASC natives tend to show a small portion of their teeth in pictures or leave their mouths slightly open which gives them the "bunny" effect that Claire Nakti has observed before. They have a mix of girl next door with a mysterious edge. She also seems to have some beauty enhancements, such as lip filler which only emphasizes even more the "bunny teeth" characteristic.

The next thing that caught my eye was her Moon conjunct Neptune in Shravana Nakshatra. This aspect between planets is very commonly seen in celebrities or individuals who have public fame in some way. Neptune enhances the beauty of the Moon by throwing a veil of mystic and illusions, and Neptune ruling photography makes it so that one way or another they are photogenic or able to look good in front of cameras.

They almost look like chameleons, morphing and changing with every snap of a picture and able to mold themselves into almost any aesthetic. They look dreamy or sleepy at times, which is often seen in Pisces placements as well. "Bed eyes" is a term often used when trying to describe someone whose gaze invites you to lay down with them somewhere.

Per Claire Nakti's obvservations on Shravana, these women being Saturn ruled tend to have sharp and well defined face bone structures. They often go from keeping a lot of baby fat around their cheeks when young to losing it completely and showing chiseled jaws that could cut like a knife.

Aside from these placements, she also has an 8th house stellium which emphasizes and enhances the alluring and mysterious energy that she already has as a Scorpio ASC. Venus being in this house makes it so that her beauty, relationship, and finances are maintained hidden in some way or obscured.

Her 10th house in Leo gives her a bright and shiny public appearance. She’s well known for what she does creatively and is seen as very confident as well. Most Scorpios tend to have something that they are known for publicly. Nagi's butt.

you know this is only tangentially related but it reminded me that something i’ve always found funny is that everyone finds it super unrealistic that nagi has really defined muscles but based on what we know about him it actually makes sense for him to look that way because muscle DEFINITION is more related to body fat percentage than anything. so like that’s why body builders go on cycles of bulking/cutting and why they’re often very hefty looking most of the time — in order to build muscle at that pace, you have to eat a shit ton of food or else your body will actually burn your muscles for energy as well as fat, so they’ll bulk in order to have enough calories to lift heavy, and then when they want to look aesthetic (ex for competitions) they’ll cut their food intake so that their body fat percentage rapidly drops and the muscles that they’ve built become visible!! this is especially true for abs LMAOO back in high school my best friend competed in gymnastics nationally and also rode horses but she never had incredibly visible abs. meanwhile my younger brother literally just runs cross country and his abs are crazy despite the fact that he never trains them but it’s literally because his body fat percentage is so low that they’re always visible — this is why exercises designed to target your abs to make your waist narrower or give you a six pack do not really work and are the cause of many people giving up on exercising (although i always say health benefits >>> aesthetics but eh everyone has their reasons)

anyways so given nagi’s general dissatisfaction with eating he probably has a CRAZY low body fat percentage (likely too low to even maintain his body weight until reo/bllk/chris prince intervened) which means whatever muscles he does have will be incredibly visible as there’s literally nothing to cover them. this is actually kinda evident in the earlier parts of the manga — if you compare second selection-era nagi with, say, reo, zantetsu, or karasu (since i know off the top of my head that we have shirtless panels of all three of them either from the main manga or epinagi and they’re in a similar height range — isagi/chigiri are much smaller so they don’t serve as good comparisons and kunigami/barou are on a diff level entirely LMAOO) at around the same time, you’ll see that each individual muscle of nagi’s is more defined, but all three of the formerly mentioned characters are broader and have bigger chests/biceps/thighs than nagi does as they all likely eat more than he does in a day. this difference is mitigated as the series goes on and nagi is probably forced to gets a better nutrition plan as well as exercises a lot more but uhhh yeah. actually idrk what the point of all of that was pretend i said smth profound 😭

ANWAYS yeah he def gets his squat reps in 🙂‍↕️ he looks so good in the manshine kit that i can almost forgive the british for everything they’ve done to my ancestors

on the art style of mouthwashing

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this or if it’s even strictly true because this is completely based on memory; but in the game the graphics generally are kept in that very polygon almost low res style, which is great because it adds so much to the aesthetic of like a retro futuristic game, but there are times where there are more detailed scenes and they look a little more high res and they run a little smoother.

Those moments of like high res to me are indicative of like the character’s mental state not in how well they’re doing but how deep in denial they are of the situation.

Like the majority of the game which is in this style we are playing as jimmy who genuinely believes he can fix what has happened; that he can “take responsibility” in a way that does not squander or harm himself. Even in flashbacks as curly a lot are in this style because he too is in denial of how serious this situation was because ‘hey, it’s just jimmy’.

The only times we get this more detailed imaging is when we see curly post crash which is partly because jimmy cannot deny having directly hurt him, he feels a level of responsibility but it’s not as detailed as the scenes when jimmy cracks because he still is able to feel no guilt and we see him show active disdain to curly multiple tikes despite him being the reason he is incapacitated. And as for mentioned when jimmy cracks, when he starts having this delusions of the baby creature and the sequence of being inside curly. while this is partly showing jimmy kind of having the realisation that he cannot fix this situation (definitely not for having guilt though….this man….) it is also curly’s guilt of the situation because he is there through out all of it. Watching jimmy freak as he is carries in his arms and at the whims of his ‘harmless’ long time friend who has again and again shown the kind of person he is and curly had refused to take it seriously.

Even having polle being more high res than these important actual crewmembers….especially when in his delusions polle can be very easily compared to anya of who she truly was when she wasn’t terrfied for her safety and her life. Like jimmy having more thoughts on how he has lost and failed at his job than about the genuine harm he has caused….maybe that’s a reach but i’ll be mad about it regardless.

We also get the same kind of graphic in terms of smoothness in the scene with curly and anya in front of the screen which has the best sense of irony because they are looking at a false screen, a projection, and anya points out a flaw that curly can’t just see. he doesn’t deny it being there and trusts that anya isn’t lying but he just…can’t see it. At this time he’s also coming to terms with everyone being fired, he’s in his most vulnerable state and he’s being realistic with the situation ahead of him.

I'm glad I don't look in the tag like the shit that passes my dash is like stuff I know, and then Mikoto being hypersexualized on a bimonthly basis with the implied impression that it's fine as long as it's a male being sexualized. I have no stake in it one way or the other. If that's fun to some, it's just fun, and I'm certain other characters are sexualized just as much in different circles. Maybe I'm just lucky enough not to have seen that.

Yet that again would be due to people recognizing subconsciously or not that hypersexualizing certain characters of the cast is problematic on some level. I don't see this sort of discussion as often around Yuno despite the content within her music videos. I don't see it around Mahiru or Kotoko as much either. This is excluding every other character that was a child when Milgram started all together.

This may sound like a complaint or a dig at this fandoms ethics, but it isn't because literally most fandoms treat male characters like this. This isn't something the Milgram fanbase created or anything it's quite common.

It's why Persona 5 wrote those story beats around Ryuji how they did- Because when sexual harrassment happens to a man in fiction it's comedy when it happens to a woman in fiction it's either horror or very notably a moral failing on the one doing it. Or maybe again I've just gotten lucky and haven't read a lot of egregious shit in that regard.

The way all fandom tends to hypersexualize men in general is a byproduct of how the sexual issues of men are discussed in media and ignorance. The same as it is when it comes to hypersexualization and caricaturing of female characters past and present as well. I don't want this to come off as me saying being overly sexualized is a male issue alone. Because it's not. This is a very reductionist explanation of sexualization in media, something that affects all genders differently.

There's much more to it than what I'm saying here. Plus, not everyone does this with the intent of demeaning a character or reducing them to their sexual appeal alone. Some people just find a design sexy or aesthetically appealing that's pretty reasonable. Displaying why that is- is reasonable as well.

However, when that is put alongside comments like "I'd never judge a female character like this, of course, I have some class." It starts to make me raise an eyebrow just a bit. Like, I end up wondering like um why not though?

Hate to be openly pansexual (no i don't this is hyperbole) but um, women are hot, lol. What does no one else think so? Is it bad to point out the features of the Milgram women too. I'm sorry but Mahiru is hot she dresses well and homely she has a decent figure and she is not lacking in the chest department.

It really comes down to preference at the end of the day. Am i going to sit here and say Mikoto looks average? No, like Mikoto, Kazui, Mahiru, and Shidou are all genuinely attractive and can be somewhat charismatic people. Ya know something that a good few murderers are. That's kind of the point of them being the adults of the group.

They are the end result of everyone here younger than them and are more than likely the best at what they do.

Outside of that, it would be weird of me to hold anybody to a certain standard when it comes to what they're attracted to in fiction. Unless they are romanticizing a criminal act or a child. Gotta make that really clear. Since that isn't really occurring here, it is kind of free game. Go nuts, really.

I just find it interesting that everything a person would ethically have an issue with someone doing to a character that's a woman has been done to Mikoto with reckless abandon.

From hyperfocusing on the measurements of his body, overtly sexualizing him regardless of how covered up he is, making assumptions about his romantic or sexual preferences. It's like everything that would make anyone rightfully a creep if they did it to a woman whether that be in real life or in fiction has been done to this one fictional dude to the point it technically happens in cycles. I can tell when a month has ended based on if this man's body is being talked about sometimes, and I shouldn't be able to do that at any time.

It's impressive. I need to note again that I'm not saying this because I'm a prude or to protect Mikoto's very nonexistent innocence. It's just a funny and interesting double standard to look into within any fandom, not just this one. I know it's all in good fun, and this isn't meant to call it out or anybody in any way.

It's just meant to be me going,

"Hey, this is a funny thing that hasn't really been questioned that much that actually ties into other writing tropes in media that are pretty bad. Let's talk about it."

Even if it is not that deep.

Personally, I've always found it interesting as daughter of a guy that suffered interpersonal partner violence and being raised in a community where the sexual assault of both men and women is prominently discussed to see how men and women are sexualized not only in media but by fanbases. Recommendations Based Off RGU

I already cobbled together Polyphony Garden (I saw someone else do an RGU pastiche based off Othello by Shakespeare, so I hope it's a valid work), but I wanna make a whole post recommending things I think fans of the Revolutionary Girl Utena anime would like based off themes and style. It's mostly books though. And of course, I'll provide trigger warnings.

Absolute Recommendations

The Pike: Gabriele d'Annunzio: Poet, Seducer, and Preacher of War by Lucy Hughes-Hallett

This is a biography on a man named Gabriele d'Annunzio, a progenitor of fascism who codified not just fascist ideals, but also aesthetics, including the Roman salute which would become the Nazi salute. He was one of the first major propagandists, a spearhead in aviation and the decadent literary movement, and much more. He was initially famous as an author and poet obsessed with beauty, but he emerged from the same strains as other Europeans. He directly inspired Mussolini, and Mussolini inspired Hitler. The biography is beautifully written, if somewhat poorly paced, a great examination of masculinity, fascism, the relation between reality and art, the strength of propaganda.

I do give an SA warning for it though.

Beloved by Toni Morrison

I get the feeling most American fans of RGU have read this but I figured I should list it anyhow and for anyone not familiar with American literature, or for people who aren't readers. This is a historical fiction novel about a woman named Sethe who is haunted both by her time as a slave on a plantation and the death of her baby. It's one of the saddest but greatest books I've ever read. I would love to teach this to a class one day.

I do give several warnings for SA, racism, and bestiality.

xxxHolic by CLAMP (as translated and adapted by William Flanagan)

It's not as deconstructive, parodic, dark, or abstract as RGU, but I think most people would like this. It's about 17-year-old Kimihiro Watanuki who possesses the ability to perceive and interact with spirits. Having grown tired of this over his short life, he one day meets Yûko Ichihara, the space-time witch who runs a wish-granting shop. In exchange for the shedding of this ability, she asks for something of equal value: to work for her. And so begins his service at her shop.

I should also mention that the sequel series xxxHolic Rei has been hiatus for nearly a decade. The series also has a sister work called Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle but it's honestly not worth reading if you ask me.

We Shall Now Begin Ethics by Shiori Amase

This is an episodic series about Mr. Takayanagi, a high school ethics teacher. It's a great crash course on philosophy, although I say that as someone whose only experience with philosophy has been Camus (and now Tolstoy).

I do give TWs for SA (especially the first three chapters, and one or two later on), self-harm, and general out-of-pocketness.

Me and the Devil Blues: The Unreal Life of Robert Johnson by Akira Hiramoto

Robert Johnson was a bluesman rumored to have made a deal with the devil. This is a fictionalized biography on him. Sadly, the series has been on hiatus for damn well a decade at this point and official copies are hard to get your hands on. But hey, the art is superb. I'm not Black, but it's refreshing to see manga portray Black characters that don't look like cartoons that Dr. Seuss grew up with.

Although seeing as how I'm not Black, I can't really judge the quality of either the official or fan translation (the image above comes from the fanscans.

I never did finish it so I can't give any TWs beyond "It takes place in the antebellum south."

The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York by Robert A. Caro

I want everyone U.S-born or U.S-residing, and everyone who hates car dependency to read this book, especially New Yorkers (especially especially the NY transplants). This is a biography on a man named Robert Moses who was New York's park commissioner for 39 years. Over his near-half-century tenure, he shaped much of New York. Many of the bridges, parks, and highways began with him. But over the years he cemented class and racial lines by prioritizing drivers and gutting public transit. He had "urban renewal" which displaced poor people from the few affordable neighborhoods around into "temporary housing," which he crowded with those people as he rebuilt their previous neighborhoods. By the end of the "renewal," the new housing was far out of the reach of the original tenants, and so they stayed in their new slums. This was a man who knew to maneuver the preexisting power structures and the court of public opinion. This is a book that examines not just a powerful person but the people on whom that person exercised his power. Robert A. Caro is a biographer I think Tolstoy would admire.

The only TWs I can give are for racism and general inhumanity. There's also one mention of SA iirc. Also, this book was published 1974. I guess at the time society hadn't made the complete transition to referring to African-Americans (and by extension other African diasporas and Black Africans) as "Black," so it uses the old word for them.
