Can we please stop pretending Klaus is some Machiavellian genius?
I get the show is always trying to tell us he is a mastermind, but there are so many more clever characters who actually set up long term plans to achieve their goals (Lucien, Celeste, Katherine). What did Klaus ever do that was ever strategic or showed any superior intelligence? If anything his intelligence was severely stunted, he was a thousand years old and still acting like a teenager half the time. He made rash and impulsive decisions and they worked out sometimes. They had just as much of a chance of blowing up in his face. This doesn't make him smart. If he wasn't so indestructible, he wouldn't have been so lucky.
Throughout history, we constantly see Elijah having to remind Klaus not to draw attention to them. All he has to do is stop being a serial killer or risk bringing the one man he is terrified of to town. You would think it would be easy, yet he is unable to control himself. At no point do we see him ever preparing to confront Mikael. He only runs from him. He could have created an army to trap Mikael or befriended witches. But no, instead of coming up with a plan, they all just run. Not much of a master strategist. The fandom loves to say it was stupid that Rebekah called Mikael to New Orleans yet doesn't want to talk about how stupid it was for Kol and Klaus to go on a killing spree which they knew would attract Mikael. And he does this not once, not twice, but repeatedly in every flashback we see, all the way from the first flashback in 1001 to the last in the 1950s.
Speaking of the 1950s, what great strategic plan was it to tell Elijah he buried their siblings at sea? He isolated the one family member he had left while Mikael was hot on his trail. This turned Elijah against him and what did Klaus do? Did he come up with a masterplan? No. he ran and body jumped.
Klaus' strength isn't his intelligence but his durability and his psychical strength. Which is why he was so determined to break his curse. He needed to be stronger than everyone, including his siblings. But what did any of that get him? Tristan and Aya at least built a cult and created weapons that could even take down Originals. Yet Klaus wasn't able to come up with any plan to take down Mikael?
We see Elijah tell Klaus that Klaus 'built' New Orleans, yet we never see any indication that Klaus is politically minded. In fact, in season one, he is in charge and a war breaks out in large part due to his scheming. He is constantly killing political leaders (the mayor, the mayor's son, the witches' leaders, every faction head, etc.) and then is surprised when they can't find peace and everyone is against him.
The only time Klaus had a long term plan that actually seemed clever was the lie about the sun and the moon curse. Not only did it take them nearly a thousand years before it actually worked, but he wasn't even the reason it worked. He was tricked by Elijah and literal teenagers. Elijah tricked him to get him to MF, the MF gang tricked him into believing Bonnie was dead, and then he fell for that exact same trick and believed that Elena was dead.
Throughout the shows and even flashbacks, people act like Klaus is this great strategist. And maybe he is compared to the children he is targeting. But when you put him up against his equals (Lucien, Mikael, Dahlia, etc.), he doesn't compare.
Celeste and Genevie were manipulating Klaus left and right in season one. In the short '9' months he was in New Orleans, he destabilized it so much that Hope nearly died. She only survived because of Marcel. They only got her back because of Elijah and Hayley. In fact, Klaus' plan to bring Hope back before they were ready is what drew Dahlia back so quickly, leaving them unprepared to face her.
Klaus wasn't responsible for Mikael's first death. He got lucky that everyone else (the children he was targeting) came up with a plan to trick Mikael. Mikael's second death was simply overpowering him, no outsmarting there. In fact, Mikael would have killed Klaus if his family hadn't saved him earlier.
Yes, he 'tricked' Dahlia into believing he betrayed his family, but this wasn't a trick. He actually did betray them. He murdered Gia and turned Elijah against him once again. He is unable to scheme without actually hurting those close to him and alienating the people trying to help. He lies that he killed Aiden, again another time he just jumps on the first opportunity he sees, and by doing so, he alienates all of their allies and endangers his family. The only reason they end up beating Dahlia is because of Esther. They all would have died based on Klaus' plan. Sure his idea to curse Hayley did technically save her life but he didn't do it for that purpose, he admitted he did it to punish her. There was no long term scheme. He hadn't thought through how it would impact Hope or even what he would tell his daughter as she got older.
Then in Season 3, Lucien had Klaus on his knees before his big brother and big sister swept in to save the day. Even taking down Tristan was thanks to Cami and Freya's plan. He had to be saved from the Strix by Hayley, Marcel, and Stefan. They have their big Thanksgiving dinner where they confront the three, but all it does is show that Lucien, Tristan, and Aurora had out schemed the Mikaelsons. The only thing the Mikaelsons could do was overpower them and threaten them.
In Season 4, Klaus hardly does anything and Season 5 Klaus is an absolute mess. You're telling me this legendary strategist couldn't save his daughter and her mother from a hundred year old vampire? He couldn't figure out a way to find her? In the seven years they were forced apart, he wasn't even trying to find a way to reunite his family? He wasn't a strategist, rather he waited for events to happen and then reacted impulsively, hoping it would work out. His plans are all based on emotion and vendettas, not strategy or intelligence.
Yes, he is Machiavellian in a sense that he has nearly no empathy and will do whatever it takes to get what he wants, but he lacks the cunningness to be truly Machiavellian. Instead he is just a narcissistic psychopath.
#let's be honest#klaus isn't that clever#he's just strong#and cruel#so people think it's clever#his plans had just as much odds of failing#he was just as easily manipulated as he was able to manipulate#anti klaus#not really#but just in case#tvdu#the originals#the vampire diaries#tvd#the mikaelsons#klaus mikaelson#tvdu metas#metas#andrea831 metas#andrea831 metas klaus

given cass's canonical love of reality tv, I am absolutely certain that every year babs has to go into cbs's recruitment email and delete her survivor audition video
#cass watching people pass out from malnutrition and heat stroke while doing endurance challenges: skill issue#she'd way less good at the social side of things in that a lot of people would hate her for being an asshole#but also she'd always know when they're lying to her and also be 30x smarter than they've underestimated her to be#also I think she'd be good at finding immunity idols#honestly I think people would want her in their alliances for her inability to lose at challenges in the first half of the game#and then be utterly blindsided by how sneaky and clever she is in the back half#and she'd literally always have immunity so like#cassandra cain#this deserves to be in the tag I'm RIGHT#if you saw that I said the cw in the first version of this post no I didn't

things TeSTAR has canonically done that drives me nuts (spoilers!!)
Kim Raebin was accused of plagiarizing... himself.
Park Moondae arranged a concert with someone who kidnapped and attempted to murder him. UNPROMPTED.
Cha Eugene ran away from his hotel room in the middle of a massive problem that he caused with only a single note. He also didn't bring his cell phone OR wallet.
Seon Ahyeon tried to put Moondae in a psychiatric hospital (DESERVE)
Keun Sejin believed Moondae when he said he was a transmigrator with basically zero proof. Hello???
Ryu Chungwoo got into a serious car accident that destroyed his whole life and career and immediately was like. Haha what if I join this idol survival show. AND DEBUTED AS LEADER.
Park Moondae caused an entire company to dissolve
Bae Sejin: [started IdolCo with 0 basic skill] "I think the most important part of being an idol is basic skill"
Keun Sejin was the first person to surpass the System's potential limitation (!!!)
#debut or die#clutching manhwa readers by the pant legs begging them to read the novel it's so good#these boys drive me crazy and i love them#i know there are only like 3 people in this fandom but. please please please.#WHAT IF YOU WERE A RANDO FAILED CIVIL SERVANT WANNABE WHO WAS TRANSMIGRATED INTO SOME RANDO'S BODY#WITH A SYSTEM WINDOW FORCING YOU TO DEBUT AS AN IDOL OR DIE#BUT ALONG THE WAY YOU DISCOVERED THAT YOU REALLY LOVED BEING AN IDOL#AND YOUR LONELY LIFE IS TRANSFORMED BY THIS TEAM OF 20-SOMETHINGS YOU DEBUTED WITH SO YOU'RE LIKE FAMILY#WHAT THEN#there are also so many cool plot twists and touching moments and clever schemes pleaseeee#if you're an idol fan or a transmigration fan or just like good stories i think you should get into debut or die#i know y'all followed me for genshin but. haha. what if.

forgive me if this is equivalent to a "cornplate tweet" but i just noticed that drv3's setting as a school in poor condition acts as a symbol of franchises dragging on so long for the sake of commercialization to the point it becomes a shell of its former self. the setting being a school that is not only old enough for it to become broken and fragile but also for nature to take over it, plus despite what makes the building recognizable as a school fading away, it continues being used as a school? the school is representative of franchises in general but especially the in-game danganronpa series, with the nature burying the building by time hinting at the franchise's (unnecessary) longevity and it becoming history, while the fragility of the building represents how a franchise's identity becomes fragile itself due to the charm and depth it was once defined by fading away due to the series being dragged out.... i love the drv3's setting even more now
#this was probably the most obvious thing ever but i admit that i dont focus on That commentary as much as the commentary on#fiction and lies & truth. so my eyes were opened too late....#ive always loved the drv3's setting. its so unique to me and its pleasant to look at. but also its clever!!!!!!!!!!!!#ive always thought it was clever in the “oh the building is old like danganronpa”#but i never really considered more to it until recently! Maybe im looking into it too much idk#drv3#danganronpa v3#sunny's thoughts#sunny.txt#dr thoughts#danganronpa#edit: i think using “commercialization” was maybe the wrong word? but at least people are getting what i mean!

compilation of damen “my wife is a bitch and i like him so much” moments i clipped/highlighted during my first reading. it may seem that damen is professing dislike for laurent in some of these, but i'm certain that in books 2&3 he'd write the insults in glitter gel pen with little hearts in the margins. he enables laurent's evil zoomies (usually to the detriment of everyone else around them) with equal parts affection and horrified fascination. damen knows his dog will bite everyone in a ten foot radius, but still takes him to the park unleashed because the foul beast needs enrichment. he posts pictures of laurent terrorizing the neighborhood on instagram and describes them as #cute in the caption. if anyone tries to suggest otherwise they are blocked on sight.
honorable mention to this quote from book 1 which doesn't quite fit the theme but still made me laugh very hard:
#damen is not a pushover tho! he’s very clever and he courageously wears his heart on his sleeve. he tries to assume the best in people...#...but he still has moral integrity. he’s much closer to his own humanity than the VERY traumatized and jaded laurent.#laurent has moral integrity too of course. that's why they like each other so much. their morals are just complex and often misunderstood#people can be multiple things sometimes and they can change! i love that aspect of the series.#capri#captive prince#cs pacat#damen of akielos#laurent of vere#lamen#prince's gambit#kings rising#also idk why i redacted one mention and not the other but idk i think the context feels different for the second one#nsft

Never understood people who say Five is 'too soft' because... have we been watching the same show? Were they asleep during the first season, which he spends being dismissive and cold with Adric, an issue that was never resolved when Adric was brutally killed? Do they, like many of the show's adversaries, mistake his outward appearance of 'harmless, affable English fellow' for weakness, even though he could switch from that to being your worst enemy on a dime? His continued dry humour, now bitter and sarcastic, in the face of danger or evil is one of the character's most compelling aspects. He hardly changes his outward demeanour, and his continued affected politeness makes him seem all the more dangerous as you see the fury and outrage boiling underneath, and you see a plan form behind his steely eyes.
And if he is sentimental sometimes, why do they see it as being 'too soft', instead of what it truly is: a need to atone, after the universe punished him for his harshness towards Adric in the worst possible way? Adric's death haunts Five for the rest of his life, and you can actually see it in Davison's portrayal, even if no mention of Adric occurs in the script. You can see Adric's ghost in the wild desperation in Five's eyes during his final serial, while he rushes to give his life to save his companion. Because he cannot let this happen again because of him. And the last word out of his mouth as he dies is 'Adric', as we come to the heart-wrenching realisation that his mind is not filled with his own imminent doom but with thoughts of that poor boy, of how he killed him, of how he never got to show how much he cared for him. Of how much it hurt that he could almost be forgiven by trading his life for Peri's, but still he could never go back and save Adric.
And that's why my blood boils when people say he's 'too soft'. He's one of the few classic doctors with a character arc, for god's sake, and it's all about him being too harsh.
#doctor who#classic who#classic doctor who#fifth doctor#peter davison#maybe people just haven't seen enough of Five's run to see the progression#but still the whole 'dangerous sarcasm' thing should be obvious even from a few episodes#maybe the whole 'gentleman' act isn't something that appeals to all viewers#like for me i dislike seven's clown act#but i can still see he's dangerous and clever underneath. i don't actually think he's stupid#whereas so many people seem to think that five just is 'friendly cricket guy' all the way through

reading tftsa is always an emotional experience especially when you get the short stories focused around the Blackthorns because the absence of Mark just bleeds out. like when you read about Julian being Helen's suggenes and Simon being the witness to Julian's parabatai ceremony you are just burdened with the knowledge that that's not who they would have picked if the circumstances were different. in a different life it was Mark.
#I think about this all the time & it just makes so sad#like Julian picking Simon of all people because he didn't know who else to ask :(#because everyone he would have asked is dead or taken away from him#also as much as Helen loves Julian there's no way he was her number one choice#like. it was Mark it would always be Mark the brother who she knew before she was even Helen Blackthorn#I wonder if Julian understood that obviously Helen would never say that but Julian's clever#probably did not help with his insecurities surrounding Mark 😬#on the other hand. imagine how Helen felt#in another life he's your suggenes in this life he's not there at all#and he's never meet (?) the love of your life and you can't even mourn him because he's not dead. he's just not there.#ignore the spelling errors I'm not editing any of this#bella talks#tsc#the shadowhunter chronicles#helen blackthorn#mark blackthorn#julian blackthorn#simon lewis#tales from the shadowhunter academy#tftsa

You've established that Odile has rather unhinged taste in people. Do you have further headcanons on that topic?
Hm... Most of the adjacent headcanons that I could talk about here would require a lot of psychological and cultural context. So let's just talk about that context!
As a child, Odile was disconnected from her peers due to heritage, temperament, and latent transgenderism. As lonely children sometimes do, she decided that she didn't need or want friends anyway, and even if she did, it wouldn't be any of these losers! They were always wasting their time on fun and social useless things that she was too weird smart and special to be invited want to do. She studied very hard and excelled in school, did a couple extracurriculars that didn't require much teamwork, and at some point during adolescence realized that unfortunately the Vaugardians were correct about the changing genders thing.
Ka Buan philosophy encourages people to understand themselves, refine themselves, explore different facets of themselves — but not change themselves, because fundamental characteristics simply cannot be changed. Accordingly, gender-noncomforming fashion and binding/padding and nicknames are fine, hormones and surgery/bodycraft and declaring yourself a different gender are not. But Odile wasn't one to let social mores stop her, so once she reached adulthood, she left her hometown and showed up at the city as Odile. And not just any city, but one with a reputation for cutting-edge craft research and certain countercultures.
You can't just show up and ask around for where the illegal bodycrafting is, though. You have to meet people, win their trust, let them introduce you to other people, repeat. Odile... honestly wasn't that great at it. She hadn't had much cause to practice social skills, so she wasn't very friendly or persuasive! But she was determined, thorough, confident, passionate, genuine in her intentions, and newly hot — and you can get away with a certain amount of blunt arrogance when you're hot. You just have to let people assume you're too cool and busy for humble niceties, which Odile did quite easily, because she's always thought of herself as such. So she found her way through the right queer punk circles eventually and completed her physical transition!
And she liked those circles. The people she met and the topics they discussed and the things they did were all so much more interesting than she had assumed any peers of hers could be! But she still considered herself more competent and correct than anyone else around her, because why would that change just because she moved? Her success in transitioning just further proved that she could do anything if she tried hard enough, that she was right all along in assuming her social failures were due not to lack of skill but last of interest. So she ended up in this dynamic where she was impressed by the people around her and wanted to have fun with them and learn more about them, but also thought herself better than them and above such things as kindness or friendship.
And she was in that "holy shit I'm surrounded by dykes and I'm a dyke now too" stage that some queer people experience after they come out.
So, she wasn't interested in boring. She wasn't interested in nice. She wasn't interested in regular people with regular concerns, like the peers who excluded her in her youth. She wasn't interested in romance or committed relationships or being emotionally vulnerable.
And, she wasn't put off by annoyance, because people annoyed her as a whole anyway. She wasn't put off by danger, because she was sure she could handle anything. She wasn't put off by clashing personalities, because it wasn't like she was planning to go on long walks on the beach with any of her partners anyway.
Thus, she found herself drawn to the most exciting people in the room. Interpersonal drama, emotional outbursts, poorly-thought-out-choices, intense obsession, risky hobbies... it was all oh-so thrilling! Of course, she did realize that the people she was attracted to had major, glaring flaws. But Odile was determined, thorough, confident, passionate, genuine in her intentions, and newly hot. If she couldn't fix them, who could?
We know from Odile's optional sidequest that when she sees something suspicious, she dedicates herself to solving the mystery. We know from her presence at Mirabelle's side that when she sees a problem, she steps in to help, because if you want something done right you do it yourself. The one major exception? The topic that has her backing down, giving up, confessing incompetence?
Emotions.
She has long since learned that she is not actually very good at fixing those.
#odile: i am so much better than all these messy bitches#odile: [the messiest bitch of them all]#sometimes.. trying to fix them..... makes them worse#esp when you're observant and clever but not very experienced with social-emotional skills but not willing to admit your own faults#and also maybe have a biased view of what's even a problem to begin with#tbh tho i think she thinks she was worse than she really was#like people change each other all the time for good or for ill#she's not necessarily uniquely terrible for failing to have the exact effects on people that she was aiming for#plus she remembers the worst moments and assumes that's what she must have always been like#when sometimes she rly did have a net positive effect#and more often she had no lasting effect at all#she still thinks she's so special 🙄#:3#isat#odile#isat odile#in stars and time#thoughts about odile#ask meme answers#thoughts

Has anyone else noticed that Mel's office resembles the Lamb's cave in the Blood Sweat and Tears mv?
The geometric design gives the illusion of Mel's space being cavernous. Mel also decorates her office with the same red rock the Lamb is surrounded in.
In the Lamb's domain she hand picks warriors to fight and decorate her space, meanwhile Mel's office is framed by a large mural of faceless warriors that surround her in defense.
On top of that the way the Lamb was introduced is nearly the same way Mel was. In both scenes, we have this mysterious but clearly clever individual offer a person with high esteem a gift (using the same hand btw).
Without any context the one to receive the gift assumes it's of high value and a reflection of their superiority, when in reality it was play on the receiver's ego by the clever gift giver.
And just like Mel with Hoskel, the Lamb had fooled Ambessa for the rest of her life by letting her believe a false interpretation of the vision she was given.
It was likely in Ambessa's final moments did she realize how wrong she was about everything from the vision, the throne, Mel, and how they were all meant to come together and how they all will come together without her.
#arcane#arcane meta#ambessa medarda#mel medarda#medarda family values#mel is a lamb among wolves and i mean it as a compliment#hopefully the noxus show remembers that like the lamb mel's strength is through how clever she is at reading people and making them align#with her agenda#truly insane for these possible clues to be hinted at in a mv that the actual show or characters never once references#like come on#anyway i do think it's cool for a place that worships the wold so greatly noxians really miss the strength of the lamb#which is how they all get played for chumps by it#kindred lol#league of legends#if noxus worships the wolf do they even acknowledge the lamb enough to know the signs of it#srsly mel is super lamb coded#those decorative rocks in Mel's office were so strange to me at first#i thought she was trying to do some kind of zen garden thing#anyway ambessa failed to see the “wolf” for the lamb it really was just like she failed to truly see her daughter bcuz Mel is the Lamb#and always has been#the Lamb is dangerous... but kind of funny

if 9&10 were "dont wander off", and 11&12 were "the doctor lies", 13s rule #1 is "dont question me"
"have we not had a good time together" shes pointing yaz to the rule that yaz very well knows is there: we can travel if you dont ask me any difficult questions. yaz knows this is the rule - "because you ask too many questions", "this team structure isnt flat" - but she also was the one to invite the doctor into her home so im pretty sure she also knows shes not gonna kicked out that easily. she has some leeway. which she has been using between revolution and flux, which is why the doctor reminds her of the rules
i dont think she'd kick her out though. she wouldnt. i think it's just that the more you break the rule, the more unpleasant she becomes to be around, and eventually youre gonna walk out on your own. she doesnt want you to, she'd rather you stay and dont ask questions. but if youre gonna try to ask questions anyway, i think thats whats gonna happen
and yaz must think so too. because she does back off. because she doesnt want that to happen either. and it does anyway
#dont question me/dont challenge me. questions are the sore spot but the challenge is one she says explicitly once#because you see this in how she is with other people too. dont try her patience. dont act like shes smaller. dont challenge her or Die#based on the giggle - 'i thought i was clever' 'what do i say?! because im always sooo certain' - i dont think 14 is like this#also based on the expressions of affection#hes not that......reactive. to this. specific thing#so i wonder if it runs over to 15#he seems chill. i think? he seems fairly chill. but also i think we've so far only seen him mostly in control of things#faced with the maestro temporarily not entirely in control hes Notably Less Chill#but still bigger picture. hes mostly in control of things right now i think#or uhhhh based on how eager he seems to get out of the role of doctor#hmmmmm#13 didnt want it but like. was stuck with it i think#didnt want it but nobody else was gonna do it. thats why 12 regenerated#15 comes out 14 Literally Quitting#he doesnt want it and hes decided hes not stuck with it. maybe#none of this is true btw im just saying words recreationally#like those 13 moments are super cherrypicked and i havent rewatched in forever so#dont believe me gfkjghgjh#this is based more on how i write them than what ive seen basically#anyway in terms of 14/yaz i think it takes yaz a while to figure out how to deal with 14 Not being like this#bc she got soooo practiced at handling 13. most of which was abt like not tripping this rule too much#she'd keep it up with 14 and he'd just do stuff that like breaks the rule from his side and yaz wouldnt have any idea how to deal with it#he'd show her hes chilled out a bit. about this. over and over and it'd still take her moooooonthssssssss to start relaxing#just muscle memory at this point. doesnt help that shes also like this#i wonder if 14 - in a sort of compelte reversal - wants to be told what to do and how to do and#seeks out situations where someone else knows more than him so he can sit down and say 'teach me'#i think thats what he does. about all the human stuff. hes like teach me. all of it. show me how to do this
