On sites like twitter instagram tiktok etc, where large numbers of people carry out recreational mass harassment campaigns on the basis that the victims have done something morally bad to "deserve" such treatment, of course these same people are not going to be willing to consider the ways that mental distress can warp people's perceptions and drive them to say and do harmful things.

To really internalise this, and the implications it has for the right way to respond even to "healthy"/"nrmal" people who have done something wrong, would make their favourite pastime morally impermissible -- and worse, it would mean that they had done something bad by participating in it, and so by their own belief system they are fair game for mob harassment. Better, then, to deny that mental illness can be so ugly as to drive someone to antisemitic conspiracy theory and far-right politics.

It's not really a question of whether mental illness "excuses" bad actions. If someone is trying to kill you with a knife then you may need to use violence to stop them, and whether they are driven by a sense of self that was fractured into jagged pieces by childhood abuse is a secondary question. While a celebrity mouthing off online isn't literally violence, it is something that nevertheless may require a sharp response, even if that celebrity is clearly going through some kind of breakdown.

The point is that the necessity of violent action doesn't require you to falsify reality by pretending that the recipient of that violence are some pure evil monsters. You do yourself, the people around you, and society in general a disservice when you abandon difficult truth for simple falsehood.
