i despise and detest how mental health / trauma is treated in lo and more specifically how it only becomes trauma in relation to hp
hades claiming zeus âwasnât scarredâ by kronos and apollo making a quip that zeus was the âleast damaged from the warâ
demeter not only being abused by every man sheâs familiar with but also being gaslit / disrespected to such extent she canât even approach her sisters for help
thanatos apologizing to his abuser
minthe getting ripped apart for being the victim of a groomer and rightfully pointing out sheâs not okay with being cheated on
heraâs trauma with kronos only being brought up as a kind of comparison / segue into persephoneâs
artemisâ very clear grief at being lied to by her family and finding out her brother is a rapist
literally NONE of these get addressed as trauma in the narrative and if they do itâs ALWAYS as either blaming them for their own grief or turning it into another hades and persephone love fest
#anti lo#anti lore olympus#also u know what since im on my soapbox#disregarding the fact that zeus got fucking impaled by kronos so there u go hades a brother scar#and the clear terror and trauma of what that war did psychologically to zeus#the entire comic relies on the premise that certain traumas are âworseâ than others#but ONLY if it relates to hades or persephone#posideon also being swallowed gets handwaved away#hestia hera and demeter watching their mother die is dismissed#demeter and hestia seeing their sister ripped in half? nada#but donât worry we get HADESâ reaction to it#like itâs just so one sided lmao im tired

Somone: Oh so your were friends with Athena and Artemis when you were little girls? It must have been so piecfull, and magical!
Persephone, who remembers one time when she was picking flowers, then Athena and Artemis join, it was too boring for the later so she decided to climb up to the top of a tree, to pick a flower, whaile Athena was yelling from the top of her lungs at her, then Artemis fall off the tree right on top of Persephone, then the three started yelling at each other, and to the time when the adults arived the three were playfully fighting in the mud: Yeah.
Such an underrated sisterly relationship.
#I imagine Persephone felt kinda left out when her sisters had their own domains and became the main Olympians#maybe they didnât spend as much time together as they used toâŚ#but then the kidnapping happened and when Persephone returned the sisters started to manage their time better#so that they can hang out as much as they used to#idk Iâm just making hcs#who knows maybe Hades can relate with that with his relationship with his brothers and they didnât hang out as much anymore#after being assigned their domains#see? I can make Persephoneâs female friendships AND her relationship with Hades important to her#retellings seem to find that difficult#greek mythology#ancient greek mythology#greek pantheon#greek goddess#hades and persephone#Persephone#Artemis#Athena#athena greek mythology#artemis greek mythology#Persephone Greek mythology#sisters#persephone goddess

"in the original myth medusa was a rape victim!" i'm literally banging my head against the wall
#you know there are ACTUAL rape victims in greek mythology you could be focusing on rn right???#but hey these people think persephone and hades are a romance so i dont think they actually care#âfeministâ greek mythology retellings that are actually more misogynistic than the original myths i hate you sm#incase ur wondering i saw a stupid tiktok and all the comments were like âi feel so bad for her she's a such a victimâ and just... ugh#tbh i feel like it's pretty weird that u aren't chill with medusa just being a monster but whateverrrr#if u want a sympathetic monster the minotaur is right there#also like... it just doesn't make any sense... if medusa used to be human explain her sisters#if athena was trying to protect her why did she help perseus kill her#this also kinda goes into the whole phenomenon of thinking âmenâ in historical contexts means men and not humans#like artemis isn't textually a lesbian#(altho i dont actually care if u hc artemis as a lesbian i just think we need to keep historical context in mind when interpreting myth)#greek mythology#medusa#milowing

Macaria: Dad, why is that lady so big?
Hades: Oh, she's pregnant. She's got a little baby in her womb. She's so big because she's likely close to giving birth soon.
Macaria: But I thought babies were out of dessicated souls, the dirt of the underworld, and a little bit of river water.
Hades: No, Mac, that's just how you were born. And that was technically an accident because I had no idea that was even going to happen.
Hades: But most babies, especially mortal babies, are made inside their mothers. First a couple will have sex, then the baby will come to grow inside their mother for a few months. Then their mothers give birth, and when they take their first breath, their soul blooms. It's a tiny feathery thing at first, but it will grow strong and big as time goes on and they experience more and more of the world.
Macaria: So the mothers make the life inside of them?
Hades: Essentially, yeah, but the baby isn't truly alive until the soul forms, which only comes at first breath. Sometimes second breath, if the first one had some issues. A couple times it was the third breath.
Macaria:
Macaria: That's disgusting, I don't want to do that.
Hades: What?
Macaria: I do not want to make a living thing inside my body. If I have a baby, someone else is going to do that for me, or I'm going to go fish desiccated souls out of the river and put them on a mound of dirt and make one that way, just like you did, but on purpose.
Hades: That's very fair, Mac. I don't have understand the appeal either. I mean, I know it's their only avenue to creating children, but why do they always look so pleased about it? It's weird. Making a life is weird.
Macaria: Yeah, but you still have to do it.
Hades: I don't have a womb, Mac.
Macaria: You can make one! Or find someone with one and get them pregnant.
Hades: You just said-
Macaria: I meant for me, not for you! I want siblings, and if it's this easy to make a baby, I don't know why you haven't given them to me yet!
#macaria#hades#happy talks greek mythos#someone's like hey mac have you ever considered having a kid? and she just starts gagging#if she's gonna have a kid they're coming by stork or plucked out of the ground like a flower#also hades being like but i dont want to get someone pregnant because i will then have participated in the act of creating life#and that as we both know is a disgusting thing and mac is just throwing a book of pickup lines at him#mac is very much i get that dad but you are my only parent i do not have any orher person i can go to and say give me a little sister#so start reading and get out there! and then she aggressively wingmans him for centuries until he gets married to Persephone#because then Persephone aggressively wingmans to satisfy her vouyerism kink đ#ah fuck when i get blasted straight to hell for my blasphemy promise you'll miss me đ

Okay, 12 people have liked this and that's more than enough for me to start blabbing!
So the fic starts off with Zeus calling a meeting, but first some background
When God Games happened, Zeus gave Athena brain damage. Ever since, she's suffered mood swings and seizures and brain fog and huge swaths of time, like hundreds to thousands of years, where she's essentially numb and doesn't feel emotions at all. (Can you tell I'm projecting just a little bit?)
Apollo is the only one that knows about any of this after Odysseus and his family die, because he was the only one that risked Zeus's anger and healed her after God Games.
Back to the main fic idea
Zeus is incredibly offended because Percy and Annabeth, upon their deaths (they weren't old, only early 40's, but they were old for demi-gods, especially in Percy's case as a big 3 kid) refused godhood, instead opting to die as mortals and go to the underworld to be with their friends and family
Zeus has decided (and honestly, this fic is heading straight for bashing territory in his case, though I'll try and limit it) that this last refusal is a step too far for his pride to take
So he calls a meeting of the council out of the blue, while Hades and Poseidon are running their kingdoms and Hestia is comforting the kids at Camp Half-Blood while they grieve
And Zeus uses that to it's fullest extent. There's no one powerful enough to stand up to him and actually be able to stop him on their own aside from Hera and Demeter, and neither of them are invested enough in Percy and Annabeth to bother
Zeus plans on throwing them back into Tartarus
Athena immediately protests
Apollo, after trying to get her to stop so he can take her place after what happened the last time she had dared to so openly defy Zeus, starts backing her up, praying to his Aunts and Uncles to stop Zeus before something permanent happens
Then he gets hit by a vision, his powers as the God of prophecy kicking in
None of them are going to get there in time, Athena is going to die
And she does. Zeus's lightning had been slowly killing her since Odysseus was freed, and when Zeus loses it and strikes her with the Master Bolt in the meeting, he kills her.
She arrives in the Underworld and finds that the majority of the side effects of the brain damage are slowly fading, but just the mention of Zeus's name is physically painful
Charon takes her to Hades palace, where she collapses on the banks of the Styx as all the emotions she should have felt hit her at once
Hades and Persephone find her there and take care of her, Hades eventually having to put her to sleep to help with the pain
It's then revealed that the reason she was dying/was killed was because Zeus had damaged her soul
(Yes gods have souls here, fading like Pan did is different from being killed like Athena was, even if no one actually knows that yet)
That's about it for what I have for Athena for now, but I have more for Apollo that takes place during all of this if anyone is interested
I'm trying to lean into some of his lesser known domains in this instead of leaning into the sun god thing, things like his positions as the god of prophecy, knowledge, truth, and protector of young men/children
I like writing him, it's fun
Let me know what you think?
Would anyone be interested in hearing about the Epic: The Musical x Percy Jackson fic I've been writing for like a week and somehow managed to get to 10k and 27 pages on gd?
It's Odysseus/Penelope/Athena with Athena & Apollo friendship, Athena-centric, Apollo-centric, Good Aunt/Uncle Hades and Persephone, Abusive Zeus, and takes place about 3000 years after God Games, aka like 25-ish years after Blood of Olympus
There's major character death, but mostly because the majority of it takes place in the Underworld
#I'm pretty proud of everything I've got written so far#there's much more detail in my actual writing#this is basically the spark notes of it#I just don't have anyone to talk to about it#only one of my sisters is into epic enough to read fic#and she hates MC death so she won't read it#even though it's just setting up the actual story#but i get it#epic the musical#athena epic#epic athena#pjo#pjo athena#pjo apollo#pjo hades#pjo persephone#pjo zeus#epic the wisdom saga#technically

Sweet As Cherry Wine || KSM, 18+
In which the cold librarian's heart gets melted by his best friend's sister
Synopsis: Kim Seungmin was the assistant librarian at your uni's library and the love of your life. Oh and also your brother's best friend.
Pairings: Seungmin Ă fem!reader, includes rest of skz, Winter (aespa)
Warnings: brother's best friend trope, a play on Hades and Persephone, secret relationship, flufff, seungmin is a menace, SMUT MINORS DNI, p in v sex, oral (m receiving), brief choking, slightly sub minnie?, just a lot of me simping after his fingies, semi public sex (in the library)
A/N: YEAH ANOTHER SEUNGMIN FIC WOOHOOOOOO LETS GAURRRRRRR an official thank you to Mona's creative juices for actually working hard to complete this. Hope y'all enjoy!
Word count: 7k (so.many.synonyms)
âAnd how she let the pomegranate juice,
Drip from her smiling lips,
Even Hades trembled under sweet Persephoneâs gaze.â
The tantalising smell of old leather and paper hugged your nostrils as soon as you crossed the threshold of the outdoors into the library. The entire room had the faint smell of sandalwood wafting through it as well, which your lungs appreciated as you breathed the air in.
Having spent only six months in your university as a freshman, you had never dared to step foot into the universityâs famed collection of books more than five times. You were far too intimidated by it. That, and also the fact that you had a tremendous amount of work hanging over your head. And you certainly did not want to disappoint your parents, who worked day and night in ensuring that you had a proper education.
âY/Nnie come on!â Your best friend, Jeongin, grabbed your hand and dragged you further into the grand building. Jeongin was the first friend you had made in college, having argued furiously with him in your sociology class on the modern feminist forms of thought. Deciding that he was smart enough to never keep you bored, you promptly shook hands with him. He must have thought so too, because the very next day, he introduced you to his band of friends, with whom he had grown up since childhood.
And now, you could see one of those friends waving to the both of you from a very large table. It was Lee Minhoâdance prodigy, archeology student in his third year, frequent arson enthusiast and a cat dad. That was what you had gotten from him, six months into your friendship
âHyung!â Jeongin practically leapt on the stunning man as soon as he came near him, âIâve missed you so much!â
Minho made a face of disgust, but you could see the faint smile threatening to spill out as he hugged Jeongin back.
âLet go of me before I suffocate you, brat.â Minho said, giving you a smile as Jeongin reluctantly pulled back, âAlright, Y/N?â
âGood as always.â You responded with a grin. âOh, congratulations on your win at the Dance Masters by the way!â Minho tilted his head at you as a âthank youâ, with his ears turning furiously red, and his smile widening.
âAnd what about me?â A smooth voice made you jump as the ever-present smile of Hwang Hyunjin appeared before your eyes.
âGive me a warning before you pop out of nowhere!â You laughed, being engulfed into a tight hug by Hyunjin, âAnd congratulations to you, as well.â
âWhy thank you.â Hyunjin did a dramatic sort of curtsy after unleashing you from his arms, âHyung, have you seen Lix anywhere? He forgot his keychain with me.â
âHeâs still stuck in class.â Minho muttered, raising his arms up abruptly and stretching with a very loud sigh, âMy bones are so stiff, I swear to God.â
âCould you keep it down, old man?â
Perhaps the most annoying voice in the entire campus rang in your ears as you spun on your heel to see the bane of your existence. The worldâs most insidious bastard faced you, in the form of a 5 '10, history-majoring, glasses-wearing, probably drinks pomegranate juice in the morning sophomore.
Kim Seungmin.
The universe couldn't have made a more negative person.
And a more perfect secret boyfriend too.
âSeungmin!â Hyunjin reached his arms out to straddle the man into a hug. You snickered at the sight of Seungminâs disgusted face.
âHaven't seen you around in a while, Seung.â Minho said, âBeen cleaning any more books recently?â Seungmin sighed dramatically, and miraculously swept out of Hyunjinâs tight arms, giving a sarcastic smile to Minho.
âOh no hyung,â He said in an overly sweet voice, âNowadays, Iâve just been spending my time wondering how on earth you thought purple was a good colour for your hair.â
Minho glared at Seungmin, who only smiled sweetly. His gaze caught yours in a swift glance.
"And I see that Miss Shorthead has decided to visit me.â He said, bending down a bit to be at your eye-level, âDo the other dwarfs know how to read as well?â
âWould it kill you to be nice for once?â You said, trying to send you a glare, which instantly disappeared when Minho decided to coo at you.
âAww you look so adorable when youâre angry.â He chuckled, leaning against the table, âYou look like my cat, Dori.â
You looked at Minho with a pleading look as if to say ânot now. âNot in Seungminâs presenceâ. Although that didn't work very well, evident from the smirk forming on Seungminâs face.
âWell thatâs maybe becauseââ Seungminâs words were gracefully interrupted by the long-haired dancer.
âWell, Iâm just going to go ahead and take this to Lix.â Hyunjin sighed, sending you a smile. You sent him one back, silently thanking him for saving you from Seungminâs taunt about your height.
âI wanna come too.â Jeongin said resolvedly, swinging his bag over his arm and looking at you, âDo you wanna come? We can see Lix hyung after so many days again!â You nodded frantically, avoiding Seungminâs curious expression. Anything to get out of that situation.
âWell thatâs settled then.â Minho groaned like an old man, âYah Kim Seungmin, got any books for stiff shoulders here?â
âWow hyung, I didn't know you could actually read.â
âYou littleââ
You were already halfway out the door by the time both of them started bickering like a divorced couple again, frolicking away in the autumn sun alongside Hyunjin and Jeongin, the latter still holding your hand.
âKeep dragging her like that, and Changbin hyung will have your head for dinner.â Hyunjin chuckled, in response to which Jeongin rolled his eyes.
âHe knows weâre friends, pabo.â He said, âPlus, no offence Y/Nnie, but Iâve already fallen for someone else.â He sighed dramatically, letting go of your hand and clutching his chest, âSheâs the most gorgeous female person Iâve ever seen in my life.â
âUse the phrase âfemale personâ in front of her and youâre not gonna get so far as a glance.â You joked making Hyunjin laugh raucously, âIt's Min-Jeong from our econ class right?â
Jeongin didn't even bother asking how you knew, all too aware of your highly observant nature, one that rivalled Minho and his cats.
âGlad to know you have enough brain to know not to date your best friendâs younger sister.â Hyunjin sent you a wink, brushing his long hair back, âAnyone going to Seungminâs book-reading thing tomorrow?â
âI am.â You piped up, casually fixing the button of your coat, and looking back up to see the utterly shocked faces of the two boys, âWhat?â
âYou.â Jeongin gasped, âOh my god.â He gasped, looking at Hyunjin with wide eyes and then pumping his fist in the air, much to your alarm, âOh my god, I knew it! I knew it, I WAS RIGHT!â Hyunjin pressed his hands to his ears, very annoyed by Jeonginâs sudden screaming. You, on the other hand, sported a confused face.
âMind telling us what you were right about, Newton?â You said, slapping Jeonginâs arm. He cleared his throat and looked at you with a teasing expression.
âYou like him, don't you?â He giggled, âYou like Kim Seungmin.â
âDid we accidentally feed him drugs?â You laughed awkwardly, avoiding both of their eyes, to which Jeongin gasped dramatically again.
âSuspicious how you're not looking into my eyes, Seo Y/N.â Jeongin stated with the air of a detective, âVery suspicious.â
âHyune, mind informing my brother that he needs to go and hunt down a fox today?â You glared at Jeongin, who kept giggling like a villain, âYang Jeongin, if you donât stop laughing, I will put a frog in your pants.â
âAlright, alright.â Jeongin laughed, clutching his stomach, âIâm not getting off the SeungY/N train anytime soon though.â he threw you a wink, to which you gagged theatrically.
âThereâs nothing to like about that asshole.â You defended yourself, climbing up the steps of the building that you had reached, âLook, Iâm just going to the book-reading to support him. You know, like a good friend would do.â
âHuh, I didn't realise good friends call their friends, assholes.â Hyunjin interjected, eyeing you up and down, quickly raising up his hands in defeat when he saw you turn maliciously towards him, âHey, Iâm just making an observation.â
âIâll take that as an observation then.â You eyed him suspiciously to which he chuckled, âKim Seungmin is the most insipid, emotionless, inhumane bastard Iâve ever met.â
âAlright, I think Lix should be out by now.â Hyunjin brought the conversation to the end, checking his watch, âYou two better get to class.â
âUgh don't remind me.â Jeongin groaned, âMiss Baek will be out for my soul today and Iâm dying to get to bed.â
âI heard Min-Jeong is looking for a date in our class, for Haechan's party on Sunday.â
âAnd suddenly Iâm awake.â
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
âPersephone would climb onto her husbandâs lap like it was her throne.
To the world, Hades was an unyielding, merciless king,
For her, he was tender and vulnerable.â
âYou knowââ Seungminâs voice dropped to a lower tone as soon as your back collided with the bookshelf, ââChangbin hyung will actually kill me if he finds out about this.â
âAnd?â You said, toying with the collar of his shirt with both your hands, âDonât tell me I bagged a man who's too much of a pussy to stand up to my brother.â
âYour man huh?â Seungminâs teeth bit down on his bottom lip, his hands drawing shaped against your waist, âWell, letâs just say your man is merely following the orders of his queen.â
A blush crept up to your cheeks at his words as you giggled, resting your hands on either of his shoulders. God did he look handsomer than ever, with the pale yellow night-light of the library illuminating only one side of his face. In the darkness, you could still see those beautiful eyes of his, with constellations swimming in each corner of them.You wondered how he didnât go blind from carrying all those stars in his eyes.
âWhat are you staring at hm?â Seungmin whispers, his lips ghosting over yours.
âJustâŚ.....you.â You said, bringing your hands up to his hair. Your fingers automatically intertwined in his gorgeous locks, effectively massaging his head as you ran your hand through them. Seungmin melted into your touch.
âKeep doing that and Iâll go and confess to your brother tomorrow.â He chuckled, leaning down to your neck. You let out a shaky breath as his soft lips touched your neck, moving across the skin to press a number of sweet, feather-light kisses on it. It tickled you quite pink.
âMin..â You trailed off, but he didn't stop with his quest, âyour lips are so soft, it tickles!â
âI could spend the whole day doing just this.â Seungmin mumbled, rising up and grabbing your waist with his right arm, whilst his left wrapped around your shoulder, pulling you closer towards him. Your hands pressed flat against his chest, wandering there before you tensed as his fingers brushed through your hair, tucking a strand behind your ear before trailing along the side of your neck. His touch was slow, deliberate, as if savouring the moment.
The longing was palpable, igniting when you threw yourself against him. Your lips crashed together fiercely, without hesitation, as if you both need this like a sick person needs medicine. The kiss was urgent, as if time was running out and every second was too precious to waste.
He presses you against the bookshelf harsher, the force of his body pinning you in place, leaving you unable to move. But thereâs no fear, only a growing desire that intensifies with every movement of his lips against yours. Seungminâs hands explore your body with an intensity that makes you shiver. You feel his nails digging into your skin, the overwhelming blend of pain and pleasure only fuels your craving for more.
You reciprocate with equal intensity, your hands roaming over his body, pulling him closer, as if mere proximity will never be enough. Your fingers tangle in his hair, tugging gently as he trails kisses down your neck, each touch igniting a fire within you.
âFuckâŚSeungminâŚâ You gasp in between the kiss. He tastes so good, like melted sugar and hints of your chapstick; you want nothing more than to devour him, sink your teeth in deeper and let your bones fade into his as the earth keeps spinning on its unimaginably prosaic axis. You donât want to end this, this dance of your souls pirouetting together towards the end of the world.
Unfortunately, the library was a public place, where poetry-drunk students barged in even at midnight.
âSeungmin!â A voice cried, âKim Seungmin, where are you?!â
His lips stopped moving on yours abruptly, as he squeezed your waist and turned his face to the side, towards the source of the voice he had just heard. Being an assistant librarian really did a number on his listening skills, though he had to admit that the footsteps were loud and the voice was familiar enough for you to quickly pull your arms away from him.
âWhat the fuck is he doing here at this hour?â You said in a panicked tone, whipping your head around to look for a hiding place. Anyone could identify your brotherâs voice easily, that distinct child-like yet powerful tone lacing it in a sweet manner.
Your brother was a music major, now in his third year. You were surprised to have been âintroducedâ to him by Jeongin, who was completely oblivious for a month about the fact that both his best friendsâ names started with âSeoâ. And of course, much like your other friends, he didn't know anything about your and Seungminâs relationship, having believed the white-lie that you two were just friends who liked to occasionally demolish each otherâs egos.
After all, why on earth would his sweet little sister fall for such a menace like Kim Seungmin?
âWait, what section are we in?â Seungminâs eyes browsed through the books quickly, lighting up brightly when he fell on a bunch of books lined up perfectly under the title âModern Economicsâ. He grinned at you with all his teeth.
âYouâre getting a book on Performance Based Incentives aren't you babe?â He smirked, quickly pulling a bunch of books and setting them on the table, âAnd I just happened to be such a sweet friend and helped you out, right?â
âNow whyââ You flicked his forehead with your finger, ââwould I be getting a book this late, idiot?â
âPunctuality problems.â Seungmin stated simply, rubbing his forehead with his hand. You didn't get the opportunity to question him any further when he picked up a random book and started flicking through the pages. He cleared his throat very loudly and started speaking in an overly exaggerated voice.
âSo if youâll see this paragraph Y/N,â You stifled your laugh at his dramatic narration, âthis will help you loads in your essay.â
âThere you are!â
Before he could continue further, a shadow crept over in the form of your brother, Changbin. A mop of unruly curls framed his face while a tight compression shirt framed his sturdy figure. You quickly took a step back from Seungmin, which thankfully your brother didn't notice.
âOh hey hyung.â Seungmin said calmly, with a snicker, âSince when did you become a book-worm huh?â Changbin didnât respond to Seungminâs teasing, instead narrowing his eyes at you.
âWhat are you doing here?â Changbin said, in that same over-protective brotherly tone he always used.
âIâm building a dam.â You said with a face so dead-pan that Seungmin burst out laughing, slamming his hands on the table. You grinned innocently at Changbin, who was now standing near you.
âSeriously, Y/Nnie.â Changbin gave you a soft smile, âYou shouldn't be out so late at night, it's dangerous.â
âWhy, because Iâm a woman?â You raised a brow at your brother who shook his head in early defeat, âBin, Iâm fine seriously. Plusââ You gave what you hoped was a âfriendlyâ smack to Seungminâs arm, ââI have this asshole to protect me. Right, asshole?â You glanced at Seungmin who, much to your alarm, smirked at you in the most flirtatious manner possible.
âUh huhhh.â Changbin drawled out, crossing his arms over his chest, âBut why arââ
âHyung, did you need something?â Seungmin interjected, giving a dramatic yawn, âI was gonna shut shop fifteen minutes ago, but this woman hereââ He turned his head towards you, ââcame in five minutes before closing and asked for very specific books.â He furrowed his brows at you in a playful manner, âReally Y/N, a man needs his beauty sleep you know?â
Beauty sleep, my ass, you thought. Your eyes lingered over the faint traces of your chapstick still stuck to his lips and the back of his head all messy from how you pulled his hair. You hoped fervently that his amazing kisses on your neck didn't leave any suspicious marks.
âGood lord, I should stop watching dramas.â Changbin chuckled, shaking his head in amusement, âHere I was thinking the both of you were canoodling or something.â
You and Seungmin made gagging sounds at the same time, giving each other a little smirk when Changbin wasn't looking.
âDo not use the word canoodling ever again.â You laughed, âGo on then, satisfy the librarian and tell him what you need.â
âNo wait, let me guess!â Seungmin piped up before Changbin could even open his mouth, placing a finger to his chin and pretending to think, âYouâre hereâŚ..to pick up that musical anatomy book for Chan hyung!â
Your brotherâs jaw dropped open comically and Seungmin raised his chin up in a triumphant sort of way. He started speaking again before Changbin could.
âIt was simple really.â He said, in a Sherlock Holmes tone, âChan hyung asked me to keep that book on hold for him today and he never arrived to pick it up.â Seungmin beamed, âSo youâre here for it, as a bribe to get him to sleep!â
Your eyes traced over Seungminâs handsome features in the dim light, you hoped you weren't smiling too much lest Changbin raised his suspicions, but god damn did your boyfriend look so attractive when he was being smart. Even though you'd never admit it, you would have let him take you right there and then on the table in front of you. Perhaps even let himâ
âY/Nnie, are you alright? Youâre red as a tomato.â Changbin looked at you with a concerned face, âShould I drop you home maybe?â
âYeah Iâm fine.â You tried hard not to glare at Seungminâs smug face, evidently he knew you were thinking about him, âI will take that drooping me home offer though soââ You picked up your bag from the table along with a random economics bookâto keep up with your and Seungminâs little lie, âThanks for the help.â You said to Seungmin, before walking straight out of the section with a âIâll wait outsideâ to your brother.
âShe does realise that she needs to get that thing registered right?â Seungmin said, walking along with Changbin to the front-desk where he worked, âItâs alright, just tell her she can do it tomorrow.â He started typing away on the computer in front of him, giving Changbin the book for Chan. he glanced up at the libraryâs entrance, lined with huge glass windows, where he could see your crossed-arm figure, tapping your foot and waiting for Changbin to come out. Cute, Seungmin thought, I have the cutest girlfriend in the world.
âWhat is up with you and Y/N turning all red this evening?â Changbin interjected his train of thoughts. Seungmin leaned back when Changbin attempted to check his temperature with a hand to the forehead, successfully shoving him out after five minutes of whining about how tired he was.
Plus, he did have a big day to get ready for tomorrow. The annual book reading that the university hosted was going to be held in less that 14 hours, according to Seungmin and as the revered assistant librarian, he had the courtesy of reading a passage along with the author that was to be invited.
He wished fervently to the stars to make sure that you were there to rest his nerves tomorrow.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
âUnder Persephoneâs lips, white stars bloomed,
In his hair, only for a moment,
Then they wilted and fell,
And Hades fell.â
The sound of the autumn leaves crunching underneath your boots satisfied you as you briskly strutted to the library. Donning an orangish-brown cardigan over a little black skirt, you looked like the most autum-coded person ever. Of course, that was done on purpose, after hours of you and your friend Jisung digging through your respective closets to style the most perfect pumpkin fairy outfits. Your hair was done perfectly and your makeup was on point. You made sure to use your darkest shade of lip-gloss, one that you knew always drove Seungmin crazy whenever he saw it.
The library looked extra gothic to you today, with beautiful hues of orange and brown framing its magnificent structure. But you had no time to waste in admiring the beauty of it today.
No, today was meant for one person and one person only.
The love of your life, Kim Seungmin.
You glided into the library through the revolving doors, immediately being greeted by a patient crowd, most of them sitting on the chairs and some of them standing. Your eyes zoomed around the room before they landed on a blue haired boy. Your friend, Han Jisung, stood restlessly, tapping his foot away and adjusting his glasses every now and then.you walked over to him, smiling as he spotted you.
âI knew youâd come!â Jisung engulfed you in a tight hug, almost choking you, âThank god you arrived in time, I was almost about to leave.â He let out a short laugh, âI have no idea who these nerds are.â
âJi.â You said scoldingly, looking apologetically at a wide eyed girl who was sneering at Jisung, âDo you know when theyâll be starting?â
âYeah, in about five minutes.â A deep voice behind you made you flinch. You turned around to see the smiling face of Lee Felix, Minhoâs younger brother and your baking buddy.
âLix!â Han cried, scaring the wide eyed girl again, âMan, I haven't seen you guys in forever.â He ran a hand through his hair. You chuckled.
âIsn't sophomore year supposed to be the hardest, Ji?â You said, to which Jisung responded with a frown, âI suppose our resident old man is working hard to graduate.â
âHe hasn't slept in, let me seeâŚ.â Jisung began counting on his fingers, making you and Felix laugh, âoh yeah thirteen years.â He scoffed, âNo wonder he hasn't noticed I went out to drink with Changbin hyung yesterday.â
âOld man huh, Y/N?â Felix laughed, âSeungmin is really rubbing off on you. Oh and that lip-gloss is on point.â
Before you could respond however, the lights dimmed and a weird sort of spotlight shone on the two high legged stools which were kept at a distance, surrounded by books which sat upon miniature round tables. Your eyes started adjusting to the sudden change in light, when the familiar shape of your boyfriend stepped forward along with a black haired lady, who you assumed was the guest speaker for the day.
âGood morning everyone.â Seungmin spoke into a mic, âPlease welcome our talented speaker for the day, Han Kang!â You applauded along with everyone else as the lady bowed slightly and settled down on the stool, with Seungmin sitting down next to her.
âHe looks nervous, doesn't he?â Felix whispered to you. You merely nodded, silently agreeing. He did look like he was on the verge of a panic attack. Which he probably was.
But in the next moment, Seungminâs eyes landed on yours and the world around him faded. The scattered applause and the lady speaking next to him merged into silence as he looked at you. He felt his lungs ease up and his breathing become calmer, as if you were the oxygen that he so desperately needed to get through the entire day.
You were just standing there in your ridiculously orange outfit, which he made a mental note to tease you about later, and your smile was all he needed to convince himself to man up and get through the thing that heâd been preparing for, for weeks.
âShall we begin?â The ladyâs voice and the snapping of a bookâs spine alerted Seungmin. He nodded and picked up his own copy, turning to the first page and catching the underlined words just as the lady started to recite. He glanced up once more to see you taking in each and every word being recited with rapt attention.
Seungmin smiled to himself.
He couldn't wait to be in your arms after this.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
âOh how Hadesâ hair is softest
When heâs down on his knees
Coaxing spring out
From inside of Persephone.â
The library was never an ideal place to be after 10 pm. It was practically isolated, far away from any dorm room or living spaces. The closest refugee area was a 24/7 convenience store about 2 kilometres from it. But it was the perfect place for a certain librarian and his girlfriend to hide out and get away from the world for a peaceful night.
Well, almost peaceful.
âYouâre so beautifulâŚ..â Seungminâs hands dance your hips around the hall, before finally pushing you into the most perfect corridor. It was lined with books, along with a few chairs and a table. Seungmin loved this spot for many reasons. Particularly because it wa a blind spot to the CCTV camera,
The heat of his touch burns your skin, even through the fabric of your clothes. He leans in, his lips colliding against yours in a bruising kiss. His features are like fallen angels, you thought, so soft and yet so powerful. His hands slid lower, pushing up beneath your skirt. He stops there to squeeze your thigh gently. He breaks the kiss, breathing heavily, his eyes dark with need.
âAdmit it,â he smirks, âYou wore this little thing on purpose didn't you?â
âAnd what if I say I did?â You say boldly, you had nothing to lose, âWhat if I said I wore my best glossââ You started pushing him back until he reached the table, ââand my best skirt just for you?â
You see the lust flash through Seungmin's eyes. Slowly, he releases you, allowing you to take a step back. He looks at you, desire and fear tangled in his gaze. And then, as if he had made a decision, his resolve breaks. He looks into your eyes, searching for any sign of hesitation or doubt.
He walks towards you, closing the gap between you, and whispers huskily, âShow me then.â He toys with your hips once more as you lay your hands flat on his chest, âShow me whatâs under that best skirt of yours.â
Seungminâs heart races as you unbutton the top buttons of his shirt, your fingers trembling with anticipation. His hands roam your clothed body, exploring every curve and contour with desperate hunger. He canât get enough of you, the feel of your skin under his fingertips, and the taste of your lips on his.
âYouâre desperate today, aren't you darling?â he sighs, his voice rough with desire. "So needy for me."
He reaches out, his hand gliding over the curve of your breast, tracing the delicate curve of your waist. His touch is electric, sending shivers down your spine and lighting a fire deep within your core.
With that, he pulls you close once more, his lips finding yours in a kiss that is both desperate and possessive. He pours all his longing, all his desire, into that one moment, and you can feel the intensity of his passion coursing through your veins.
âNuh huh.â You say, breaking the kiss abruptly, and walking forwards, forcing him to walk backwards until his hands are gripping the table once more, âYou did such a good job today, you deserve a reward donât you?â
Without a word, you bent down in front of him, pulling at his pants with urgency. He helps you pull the fabric to the side, exposing his hard cock, you were mesmerised by how perfect it looked, thick, long and pretty with a pink tip.
You started teasing him, your mouth moving slowly, hands caressing his balls, but the teasing did not last long. Seungmin grabbed your hair, gently tugging your head forward. âSuck my cock,â he demanded, his voice low and rough. âNo teasing.â
You hummed, the vibrations travelling through his shaft making him lean his head back, he would have almost fell were it not for the table behind him, supporting his weight. Your eyes closed shut as your lips wrapped halfway over his dick, caressing your tongue over the bottom side as you savoured your favourite salty treat in the back of your throat.
âFuck,â he groaned, his eyes rolling to the back of his head, as you worked your tongue along his shaft. âYouâre such a good girl, feels so good.â
Once satisfied with the feel of his heavy weight against your wet pink muscle, you widened out, ushering your mouth to take more as you felt his hand tighten around your head, his fingertips digging into your scalp, a low groan escaping his chapped parted lips.
"Thatâs it. Just like that, loveâŚ." He groaned, his fingers gently tangling in your hair at the back of your head as he guided you forward slightly. Though he didn't say it out loud, you knew he wanted you to go further in, conveyed perfectly by the way he was forcing your head forward by his hand. The harsh grip he had on your hair made you whimper around his cock.
You obeyed, taking him deeper, your mouth moving faster as you pleased him just the way he liked. Your knees scraped against the carpeted floor as you scooted further on his silent instruction, your face almost smushed into his pelvis.
âSo fucking perfectâŚâ he said through gritted teeth, his breath ragged. âKeep doing that baby, thatâs a good girl.â The words sent a shiver through you, and you moaned around him, sending vibrations along his length. He gasped, tightening his grip on your hair.
His other hand reached down, his thumb caressing your cheek as your pink glossy lips stayed parted on his thick girth. Tears brimmed your eyes as he pushed forward once more, a part of you wanted to protest but all that came out was jumped whimpers around him.
You couldnât respond, your mouth full of him, but the moans you let out told him everything. You took him deeper, gagging slightly as he hit the back of your throat, and he cursed under his breath, his abs tightening.
âIâm gonna cum,â he warned, his voice strained. âIâm gonna cum in your mouth.â
You nodded eagerly, his hands guided your movements, and his moans filled the air, telling you how perfect you were, how no one could ever make him feel like this. It only took a few more strokes before his hips jerked, and with a groan, he spilled into your mouth.
His head fell back, and he moaned, âSuch a good girl, my good girl. You did so good for meâŚ..sucked my cock so well.â You swallowed everything, licking him clean before pulling away, looking up at him as he watched you with hooded eyes.
Seungmin helped you up on your feet, guiding you into his arms as your lips met in a soft kiss. You could still taste his arousal on your tongue, sickeningly sweet, like some poisonous wine. That, combined with the fumes of his cologne only made you rub your heated, clothed core against him.
âMy turn now, baby.â He whispers against your mouth.
Before you knew it, he was pushing you flat against the bookshelf, pinning you in place in a familiar position with his body. His mouth crashes against yours, the kiss is fierce and demanding, a clash of teeth and tongue that leaves you both breathless. His hands roam your body, groping and squeezing, leaving no inch of skin untouched.
âMinâbabyâSeungmin.â You forcibly broke the kiss, âWeâre in a library, what if someoneââ
âDonât give a damn,â he muttered, his hands tightening on your hips, pulling you closer until you were standing right in front of him. âIâve been thinkinâ about your cunt all fuckin' day.â
The way he talked to youâfilthy, raw, unapologetically possessiveâset your body alight with anticipation. You had never actually fucked in the library before, but hey, new day, new learning opportunities, right?
Seungmins hand roam your body higher and higher until they reach a point where theyâre pulling your cardigan off, leaving you in an undershirt, which quickly went down too. Your eyes never left his hands, lined with beautiful veins like bolts of lighting. God, did you miss them inside of you.
âStaring darling?â Seungmin cocked his head to the side, his left hand leaving your hip and grabbing your chin with his fingers. He tilted your jaw towards him, admiring your features for a moment, before taking your skirt off in an instant, leaving you in your panties and bra.
âHow about we take these off, hm?â He mumbles, his hands already fiddling with the lining of your underwear. One nod from you was all it took for Seugmin to bend down, pulling your panties along with him, revealing your pussy to him, you hissed at the exposure. You gasped softly as he trailed his way back, fingers dancing on your bare legs. His hand reached your back, smoothly unbuckling the clasp to take your bra off.
âMy gorgeous baby.â He crooned at your naked figure, practically glimmering to his eyes in the dim light. The moon was full tonight and slivers of it were slithering in through the windows, decorating your body with ribbons of beauty.
His fingers teased your skin, and your breath hitched as the familiar heat between you began to rise. His touch was slow, deliberate, as if he was savouring every moment. He shifted, positioning himself closer to you, his body warm and strong, the weight of him grounding you in the moment. His lips found yours again, and the kiss deepened, filled with both tenderness and desire.
Your fingers tangled in his hair when he sucked on one of your nipples, your eyes closing as you let out a soft hum. His teeth gently scraped the tender flesh, and you pulled him even closer, his hands roaming up your back, making you arch into him.
âYouâre so wet, baby.â Seungmin slid his hands around your hips, gripping them tight as he positioned you just where he wanted you. He taps his cock against your velvety skin, eliciting a moan.
âGo on then.â Seungminâs voice is powerful and dominating, âSpread those legs nice and wide for me.â
Your legs trembled as you obeyed, spreading yourself open for him, your wet, swollen clit exposed to his hungry eyes. He groaned, his breath ragged with lust as he looked at you, his lips parting slightly. Both his hands were trapping you in between them, effectively pinning you in place with your back hard against the bookshelf.
Seungmin waits for nothing else, easing himself into you, he groans loudly against your neck, the warmth surrounding him feeling euphoric. His arms wrapped around you, both of you moan as he finally sinks his cock into you. He slides in too easily, so easily you almost think heâd hadnât meant to do it.
His hips start rutting into you fast, he needs this and he has you now, he canât stop himself. You grip his shoulders hard, gasping and wailing, the sounds only egging him on.
Heâs fucking you good as ever but thereâs a sort of reckless confidence in his movements. His hands reach up to your neck, grabbing it harshly. It's so hot your head spins. You feel like youâre going to explode.
âSeungmin!â You cry out, your voice ripping its way out of your throat, âMinâharder..pl-please.â
Seungminâs chuckles vibrate through your body as his fingers grip your neck even tighter. There were sure to be marks all over it the next day, but you owned makeup and he didn't give a damn. Your mouth parted open as he kept on chocking you, fuck it felt so good, you could have coated his dick with your cum right there and then. Your mind went blank; it was him and only him.
Pleasure surges through you like electricity, Seungminâs thick cock hitting all the right spots from this angle. While you weerent expecting sex agasint a bookshelf, the intensity which he fucks you with right now makes you think you could get used to this.
But it didn't last long, as your erratic breaths turned into deeper ones, when Seungminâs hands left your throat painfully. You whined at the feeling. But you couldn't even complain, all too distracted by his sweet cock making you ascend to the heavens.
âMinâoh fuckkkkâyou feelâoh! You feel so good!â You cry out, not caring whether you were loud or not.
âYeah?â he groans between thrusts as you whine sweetly in his ear. âYou like that, princess?â
He pounds into you, glad that you donât seem to mind his ferocity. Heâll be gentle with you some other time, but right now, all this pent-up energy needs to come out, and youâre receiving it so well.
âTaking me so well. My dirty little babyâŚâ he chokes out, and you moan in response, seemingly touched by his words. He lifts himself up onto his hands, staring down at you, his hips slamming into yours. He watches your beautiful face in fascination as it twists with pleasure.
âmm, thatâs itâŚfâfuck...â He grunts in your ear, making you whine in response. His thick, girthy cock was stretching your pussy out, your hole gripping his dick each time he pulled out and slammed right back into you.
His moans resembled a growl almost, as you both reached your climax. You were rendered speechless as your orgasm pulled on your core, about to send you over the edge with a few more sloppy and languid thrusts. You cry out as he stuffed your pussy, thick, hot spurts of his cum filling you up to the brim.He continued leaving sloppy kisses across your shoulder blades, beads of his sweat dripping onto your warm skin.
Seungmin doesnât pull away until heâs certain that thereâs nothing else left to give, and he winces out of sensitivity as he slowly moves back to pull out, his cock laying limp against his thigh.
âWhatââ You gasp out your words, despite the absolute exhaustion, ââthe fuck did we just do?â
âI donât knowâfuck?â
There were mere seconds of silence before the both of you burst into giggles. You leaned your head forward to rest on Seungminâs shoulder. Now feeling the actual effect of your tiredness.
âIâll drop you home.â Seungmin mumbled in your ear. You nodded, feeling way too sleepy to respond. Seungminâs eyes wandered down to your neck. He smirked at the dark blue bruises in the shape of his fingers. He would have to buy you coffee for the following year just to make up for it. He wondered what on earth you would tell your brother, lest he asked how you managed to burn your neck with a curling iron.
But that would be to wonder for later, Seungmin thought, brushing all ideas aside and helping you get dressed, his touch so soft and sweet, a contrast to his persona five minutes ago.
âMin?â You said, as Seungmin slipped your cardigan onto you. Your voice was slightly strained and slightly drowsy.
âYes, my love?â
âI love you.â
Seungminâs lips morphed into a smile, before they gently touched yours in a short, chaste kiss.
âI love you too, my dearest.â
Suddenly telling Changbin about you two didnât seem too scary.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
âAnd the God of the underworld loved the Goddess of Spring,
He was her darkness, and she was his light,
Without death, spring would never come,
And without spring, there would be no death.â
The air in the room stilled dramatically.
To your right sat Minho, Jisung, Hyunjin, Felix and Jeonginâall with their mouths hanging open, although Jeonginâs was threatening to form a smirk. To your left sat a smiling Chan, who had his arm around another manâs shoulder. The man in question?
Your wide-eyed brother.
Since childhood, you could always figure out Changbinâs mood easily, he was practically an open book. But now, as you sat in front of him, with your now official boyfriend Seungmin next to you, yourbrotherâs expression was practically impossible to read. Was it anger? Or betrayal? Or happiness even?
âBin?â Chan soothingly said, trying hard not to laugh at Changbinâs face, âDo you have anything to say?â
Changbinâs mouth opened for a second and then closed. And then it opened again.
âSo that nightââ He began slowly, you saw the other boysâ heads whip around to face him, ââwhen I was getting the bookââ He looked up at you, ââyou two were....?â He ended the sentence, but everyone in the room knew what he meant. Taking a gulp, you nodded.
âRight..yeah.. Right.â Changbin exhaled, slumping back against the sofa, âYeah..no makes total sense, yep.â
âWhat he means is, heâs happy for the both of you.â Chan grinned brightly. Seungmin pulled you ever so closer with the arm he had around your waist.
âYeah.. Iâm so happy.â Changbin said through gritted teeth, before suddenly sitting up straight. He directed his eyes at you, fixing you in a stare that you knew meant you were in trouble.
âYou, weâll talk at home.â He said, before directing his eyes to Seungmin, âAnd you.â He narrowed his eyes at your boyfriend, who gazed on, unfazed, âIf you ever break her heart or do anything to make her sadââ He straightened his spine, ââIâll break every bone in your body.â
âThatâs it?â Seungmin piped up to everyoneâs surprise, âCool, well I donât really prefer breaking hearts so weâll be fine hyung. Now if youâll excuse us,â He stood up, pulling you along with him, âMy girlfriend and I have a date to get to.â
Jeongin coughed loudly while the rest of them looked on with pride, barring Changbin, as you and Seungmin quickly exited the room, running off with interlocked fingers and intertwined hearts.
The room fell silent again as the boys all stared at Changbin, who was holding his head in his hands.
âHyung?â Jeongin began with uncertainty, âAre you alriââ
âHOW ON EARTH DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THEM?â Changbin all but screamed, making the other flinch, âMY LITTLE SISTER, WITH HIM? I MEAN WHAT THE Fââ
He continued screaming for the next five minutes, unbeknownst that the lips of two allied souls were dancing with each other, right outside the room.
As they would dance for eternity.
fin.

Listen, here me out. We already know about Aven's family, but what about Ratio?
It would be really funny if his entire family is just all the olympian gods and like they don't even have to be higher beings in the first place because just imagine this dynamics man.
Yea, Ratio likes to call himself "Mundanite," but you can't say the same for the rest of his family đ
"Dearest Veritas, please tell your mother Hera that she is not welcome to dinner tonight"
"Young Veritas, your sister has decided to attack one of your fathers once again"
"Veritas, it's your mother, it would seem your useless father has hidden another child from us, if you're hoping to an older sibling, my apologies you're still the baby of the family"
"Hey Little Veritas! It's Dionysus! Wanna come to my party?"
"Young Veritas! It's so good to see you all grown up, and who's that young man with you? You better not take after your father."
He replies to their text at least once a month max, but he has good communication with Hades and Persephone.

req: Hi I really liked your fic with Athena and I would like the same fic with Hades if you don't mind. Thanks in advance!
yandere PJO! Hades x demigod! darling đđşđ - general hcs
I would like to start off by establishing that I truly and firmly believe that Hades would NEVER hurt you or torture you like some of the other gods and goddesses *agressive coughing* Athena, Ares and Hera *more aggresive coughing*
Well and truly he is too in love with you to even THINK about that
I mean have you seen how he reacted to Persephone hating him at the start of their relationship???
Anyways, I believe that the way you would meet is if you were a mother figure to Nico
Nico was immediately drawn to you, an older camper who had stayed back to help Chiron as a counsellor
You weren't afraid of him like most other councellors, rather, like Percy and Annabeth, you saw him as more of what he was; a child who just needed love and affection, a neglected and abandoned child who had to grow up too soon
He's rightfully suspicious and offstanding to you at first but if you act the correct way around him, he definitely takes to you
He starts opening up to you about different things, how he felt about his sister's death, how he felt about Jason's death and how he was struggling to see the point in anything
Comforting him at any time late in the night because he's anxious and depressed and being the one to introduce him to Will also helps :)
I think after he starts dating Will is when he takes you to introduce you to his dad because he finally feels like he has a mother
And that is when you, unfortunately, catch the attention of the Lord of the Dead himself
It's very very hard to gain Nico's trust, considering what he's been through, Hades knew you must have a heart of gold or atleast cared about Nico to have one around him
He finds you intriguing, the way you stand tall to him and only give him a stiff bow, how you roam about and talk to his ghoul servants with ease and of course, how well you're able to take care of and calm down Nico
So his inner stalker starts acting up and he starts sending his servants to spy on you, following you around in the darkness, watching you in the shadows, showing up in your dreams, resulting in them melting into nightmares
Waking up trembling and sweating because of the horrifying creatures and distant memories tormenting you :(
Hades hates tormenting (traumatizing) you but he can't really help it since he needs to know your routine to kidnap you
Actually, I don't know why I censored that, he does kidnap you
He basically sets his furies on your ass which sucks for you but he had no choice
Like imagine just having a quiet, comfortable time in your cabin, all alone with just a nice book and your favourite drink
And then screeching she-demons descend on you and literally drag you all the way to the underworld
Of course, you were having absolutely NONE of that, kicking and screaming
But he gets you eventually
As soon as they deposited you in your bedroom, the man himself comes to see you
Hades confesses to you immediately and tells you he loves you
You immediately remember the story of Persephone and shove him away in horror
From then on, it's just a never ending cycle of him trying to win you over with his wealth and confessions of undying love
Visiting your bedroom everyday with flowers from Persephone's garden
They're beautiful of course but that doesn't mean you'll forgive him
Chucking things from your incredibly expensive bedroom at him while he just stands there and stares at you sadly before leaving
Yelling at him and begging for him to take you back home but he just shakes his head no and apologizes to you over and over
This could go either of two ways, depending on the kind of person you are
1. You keep fighting against him until you finally give in, accepting your situation and deciding to make the most of it
2. You accept his love, thinking that it's better to have undying love than mortal love
He'll be delighted when you finally storm out of your room and go to his throne room, calmly informing him that you accept his proposal
He ADORES you
He's very clingy and he wants you in the throne room with him at all times
He's the kind of person to stare at you for hours and get completely distracted from his job
Like most of the times, you're gonna have to be the one to interview the souls who come to meet him because he's too busy gazing at you
He loves being romantic and will wake you up every day with flowers
He isn't very touchy-feely, he's more of a gift giver kind of person
I mean, he's the god of wealth for god's sake
He will literally get you ANYTHING you want
Even if it's sold out EVERYWHERE, he will personally commission Hephaestus to make it for you
Literally dream of anything, anything that you could possibly want and boom, the next morning, you wake up with it on your bedside table
All he wants in return is a little kiss every day and you telling him you love him
He's one of the gods who will let you roam the above world
He knows that he treats you so well, you'll come back to him anyways
He loves taking you on romantic dates to literally any place you want
Renting out the Eiffel tower just for the two of you is quite the common occurrence, it's his favourite place for a date <3
Complete gentleman, notices everything about you and will literally just chuck money at people, gods, ghosts and monsters alike to make whatever you want happen
Even the slightest show of affection from you is enough to make this poor god pass OUT
Like imagine picking a pretty flower from the above world for him and presenting it to him in the throne room??
He almost fainted of happiness and immediately ordered it to be planted in the royal garden so he could go and gaze at it for eternity
He's in the seventh heaven when you tell him you love him
For everyone wondering what's going on on the Persephone aspect of things, I think she'd be pretty damn pissed at first
Not only because he kidnapped ANOTHER girl
But also because that's her husband??
But unlike Minthe, he actually defends you and refuses to let her hurt you or turn you into a plant and crush you
Eventually, depending on your behaviour and attitude towards her, Persephone will either hate you but not do anything about it, learn to tolerate you OR she'll love you <3
Maybe a little too much....
I mean, you caught her husband's eye....so surely there's something about you that intrigues her too....
But that's a good thing!.....right?
Good luck to you if she ends up turning yandere for you because she is definitely not as soft-hearted and non-violent as Hades
Either way, living in the underworld turns out not to be so bad, especially when you can wander around in your choice of clothes all day, throw money around on things you want, living in a gigantic palace decorated to your design and basically do whatever you like in return for loving an actually really sweet god
Y'know, even if it IS completely filled with spirits and zombies
But that's just minor details in exchange for literally anything in the world....right?
Also, Cerberus ADORES you
Even if you have dog allergies, since he isn't technically a real dog, his 'fur' doesn't affect you
Will follow you around everywhere, begging for pets with all 6 of those cute puppy eyes
Also loves playing fetch :3
Once Nico found out that his father kidnapped you, his reaction was something along the lines of silent, shocked staring
"Nico...I can expla-"
"What. The. Fu-"
He gets used to it pretty fast, he's used to his father's weird, obsessive antics by now
And besides, it just means he gets to spend more time with you <3
I have this irrelevant hc that he likes dragging you with him to his father's throne room and giving him a forceful makeover, just to embarrass him
Hades puts up with it, mostly because he's a softie
In terms of punishments and such, the only time he'd really get pissed is if you tried cheating on him
Like he is so whipped for you that he is willing to let anything slide...except for disloyalty
Even then, the most he'll do is isolate you
He really can't keep himself away from you either
Mostly, he'll just send his minions to guard you a lot more
Which is just more inconvenient and annoying than anything mentally damaging
Overall, he's one of the tamest yanderes in terms of Greek gods
He really doesn't want to hurt you, he just wants you to stay with him forever
He's just clingy :)

Summary: The day the god of the underworld steals you away, he expects to have found a timid wife to make his isolated life more bearable. Little does he know that the rose he picked from the garden called earth bears knives instead of thorns, and he might not have found a timid wife, but a queen with a heart as dark as his.
A/N: Hi guys! Months worth of rewriting and editing is finally finished! This story grew very dear to me since this is my first plot based on greek mythology, and I took my sweet time for the world building. Thus, I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
The day the god of the underworld stole you away from earth, he didnât only steal your body, but your soul too.
You were watering the flowers in the garden behind your small house before he did it. It was the first day of spring, the sun rays only slowly starting to feel warm and pleasant on the tip of your nose. Your plants were reluctantly awakening after months of hiding under a thick blanket of icy snow, but you were determined to make them flourish and blossom in all colors again. Your mother always said you had a magic touch for making flowers grow even from concrete, and every year you proved to her that she was right.
From the kitchen window that stood ajar, you smelled the delicious stew she was currently cooking with the help of your little sister, prepared from the self harvested vegetables that had survived this long winter. You were already looking forward to lunch - of which you were blissfully unaware you wouldnât be able to join at that time.
When the watering can was slowly emptying, only droplets still coming out, you arose from your crouching position with the intention to walk over to the well and refill it one last time. Overhearing your sister placing the plates and cutlery on the table, you assumed the stew was finally ready, so you hurried with your steps to finish your labor quickly.
If you had known that the last words you directed at your mother and sister before leaving the house would have been âIâll be back soon!â, would you have chosen other ones? Perhaps something with a deeper message like âIâll always love youâ or âIâll be fineâ? But you hadnât known, so they were left with the promise that youâd eventually return from wherever you vanished to that day.
Even though you didnât know yourself whether you would ever be able to see them again.
Lowering the bucket into the well, it never came to reach the waterâs surface. Suddenly, it felt like the entire world came crashing down on you. Deafening noise replaced the birdsâ singing and chirping that had accompanied you until now. You panicked and raised your head, looking over to the house where you wanted to make sure that nothing was happening to your family as the soil beneath your feed started to shake too.
Gathering your skirts around your hips, you prepared yourself to sprint, but as you were about to set one foot aside, there was nothing to support your body anymore in front of you. The ground under you was split, entirely gone, and only darkness gaping at you from beneath. You let out a scream and stepped away, rescuing yourself to the other side of the cleft.
Having no idea where this earthquake came from as they were unusual for this part of the world, you only thought about saving your mother and sister. But as you looked over to the house again, it still stood there, solid, steady and seemingly unmoving. And then, it was gone. Not because it fell into a crater like the one that had split in front of you, but because you fell into one that had opened up between your legs, forcing them apart.
Realizing the danger of the situation too late, there was no possibility for you to save yourself anymore as you fell right into the gap, into darkness, with a long lasting scream.
So, this was how you died, you thought.
____
You had dreamed of your mother and your little sister. Only the three of you, sitting at the lunch table, eating the delicious stew the two had prepared upon your return from the garden. You were chattering and laughing together as always, as though nothing had changed. But it wasnât real, only a dream in which you wanted to linger a bit longer.
Silent tears had streamed down your closed eyes that were now dried around the rims and which you still refused to open. The surface on which you were lying felt a little too comfortable, almost like a soft mattress. A thick blanket was pulled over your body as well so that you didnât freeze. You were able to move your fingers, feeling every breather your chest drew as though reminding you that you were very much still alive and not dead like you had assumed.Â
Eventually, you had to force your lids open. Dim light coming from lit candles immersed the dark room in which you were situated in a soothing atmosphere. Though the term âroomâ was an understated description for the place in which you found yourself. The closet-like space back at home which you shared with your sister could be called a room, but this was way bigger than your entire house, including the garden, and way more. This was an entire suite.
You braced yourself against what truly turned out to be a soft mattress on a huge bed that was thrice the size of your own, the posts towering you on each edge and connecting over your head in a net of purple velvet. The bed was made of black marble glistening in the flickering candlelight coming from the golden chandeliers, and only then you noticed that the entire room was forged from this luxurious, dark material.Â
To your right, you spotted two high pointed windows that reached to the vaulted ceiling with interlaced arches, but the view was hidden by curtains made of the same purple velvet that was hanging over your bed. The suite was decorated with long, golden mirrors and stucco of the same color, and to your left, you found a long closet stretching across the entire wall as well as a dressing table.
Before you could inspect the place further, a knock on the door made you gasp out loud and slide to the far end of the bed. You were at a loss about what had happened to you, where you currently were, why you were here. Had you, inexplicably, survived the earthquake and been rescued by someone?
You nearly didnât dare look when the doors opened and in walked a girl, most likely a bit younger than you, dressed all in black with a golden tray in her hands. She was very pale, but the color of her skin stood in contrast to her dark hair and garments of the same color, the smile around her lips inviting, kind, and genuine.Â
âGood morning, mistress, youâre already awake!â she chirped in a cheerful voice.
It was morning already? For how long have you slept? âGood morning,â you croaked, startled by your own, hoarse voice. âWhere am I?â
âAt my masterâs palace.â She put the tray on top of the mattress, right next to you. There, you spotted a bowl filled with what appeared as porridge. âI came to bring you breakfast, mistress. After that, Iâll help you bathe and get dressed.â
âWhat for?â You furrowed. If anything, you wanted to leave right away to return home. âAnd please, Iâm not a mistress.â
âTo meet my master, heâs already waiting,â was the girlâs simple answer. âAnd as a guest of this household, youâre formally our mistress.â
At that moment, it made sense to you. Of course you would need to express your gratitude to the person who saved you from the earthquake, it was only polite. Then, you could return home, so you gave a nod to confirm your agreement despite being addressed as a mistress still not sitting right with you. You would act along for today.
âWhatâs your name?â you asked the girl as she put the tray on your lap, taking the spoon into your hand and dipping it into the porridge.
For a guest suite so big, the breakfast was very simple, plain even, you silently remarked. The oats were made with water, not milk, so the flavor wasnât very rich as they also hadnât been seasoned with sugar or cinnamon. But again, you didnât want to be ungrateful and enjoyed what was offered to you.
âItâs Ara, mistress.â
The title sounded so bizarre to your ears. You were a simple girl from a small village, not someone who usually resided at such a place.Â
âAra, I would love to meet your master and express my gratitude. Take me to him.â
âVery well, mistress.â
____
After taking a bath in a room that wasnât less luxurious as the one in which you had slept, with a tub made of the same dark marble that reminded you of onyx, Ara dressed you in a tame, but beautiful long-sleeved dress made of pastel pink silk that flowed down your body and fitted perfectly. During the process, you noted that you hadnât caught any bruises or scratches from the fall, and you nearly started to question your sanity if falling into that crate had even happened at all. Miraculously, you had survived unscathed.
With cautious steps, you followed Ara along the dark corridor lit up by candles, the dark yet lavish theme of the place also present here. It didnât take you long to find out that this wasnât a mansion, but an entire palace you had only read about in books. For someone who had grown up in a small, rundown house, it couldnât quite fit in your imagination how big a palace like this one must be as you rounded corners and passed by more corridors with walls you had to bend your neck to see them end. There were no windows open, all blacked out by the velvet curtains despite it being morning apparently, light coming only from the elaborate candelabras.Â
You wondered how far from home you had been found as you had never encountered someone passing by a palace like this close to you, so fascinating yet intimidating. Surely, news must have broken out like wildfire already since village people devoured gossip like no one else, especially when it was about something as lavish as the owner of this palace. You were eager to find out and request an escort home.Â
Ara eventually stopped in front of a heavy door after you had nearly clumsily flown down a stairwell. On your way to here, you hadnât encountered a single other person. It was quite a huge residence for someone to call it a home to themselves only. You didnât know what to make of this odd place.
âMy master awaits you.â
As the door opened, you found yourself standing in front of a purple carpet that led into a grand hall. The carpet shaped a long aisle with swaths of the same colors on the walls, interrupted by golden candelabras. The windows, spaced every few feet, were taller than most homes you had seen, and the high ceilings as well as arches were just as extravagantly forged.Â
And there, on a dais at the end of the aisle, raised a pompous throne, tapering at the top in spikes and forming sword-like adornments that were divided by a skull in the very middle of it.
On the throne itself was seated a tall figure.Â
The master.Â
âPlease come in,â he called out to you.
Even though you were still at the other side of the hall, you heard him clearly, a voice so low, it could haunt your dreams, but also so melodic, it could lure you to listen to its owner for an eternity as well. The latter was what drew you closer as the door magically shut behind you without physical force.Â
He was possibly the most beautiful man you had ever seen, and even this didnât do a description justice, you thought to yourself as you stood in front of the dais after a long, silent walk toward it, eyeing the master hopefully, almost imperceptibly. In your small village, you had encountered many beautiful people on their journey across the lands, but even the most handsome ones didnât come close to the man opposite of you.
Other-worldly, on the other hand, was spot on to describe his appearance. His hair was blacker than a crowâs feather, falling elegantly into his forehead and nape, his skin fairer than winter snow, and his dark eyes clearer than morning dew. He was everything you knew and way more than that, nearly impossible to fathom in human words.
His right leg hung loosely over the throneâs armrest, his elbow propped against the left one as though he was bored, but you didnât miss the attention and slight wariness in his gaze. He was donned in a black jacket and black trousers with gold embellishments that ended in boots of the same shade. The attire rustled when he settled in a proper seating position and leaned forward as though to examine you. Only then you noticed the black crown that ended in spikes sitting on top of his head and nearly meshing seamlessly with his dark hair.
Having almost forgotten your manners, you quickly gathered your composure, suppressing your reverence for his appearance, and did a curtsey. âI apologize for having let you wait for so long⌠master. I wanted to express my gratitude for the rescue and for giving me shelter in your home.â You caught him raising a brow when you looked back up to him.Â
He slowly repeated two words, âRescue? Shelter?â
You were just as perplexed, but explained your situation calmly, suspecting there might have been a miscommunication from your side, âFor having saved me after I fell into the crater during the earthquake. I am deeply indebted to you and will do anything in my power as a peasant to repay what you have done for me. But first, and I want to apologize beforehand for being so bold, I ask to return home and make sure that my mother and sister are well.â
âI havenât rescued you.â Smoothly, he set both his feet on the daisâ surface and leaned back again as though more relaxed now, âIt was me who tore the earth apart to get you.â
A shudder ran down your spine and you took a step back. Surely, you must have misheard. âW-what do you mean by that? I donât understand.â
He rose from his throne, now standing even taller and higher above you, and you grew more intimidated than you already were, bracing yourself to flee as an eerie feeling settled in your stomach.Â
âThis is the underworld, my kingdom.â Pause. âAnd youâre going to be my wife.â
____
You were running as fast as your feet were able to carry you. Somewhere along the way, you had lost your slippers, but you didnât mind your bare soles touching the ground in passing as long as you could find an exit. But there was none. With the long skirts flowing between your legs and your hair getting lifted up by each movement, you ran along the apparent endless corridors, but every door you opened led you into another, empty room, regardless of the floor and part of the palace you ended up in.Â
There was no exit, there was only darkness.
Exhausted and having to support yourself against the cold wall, you gasped for air, your lungs hurting as you had been trying to escape for too long already. From the window, a soft breeze found its way in, but you didnât dare to pull the curtains aside, scared of what you would find behind them.
He was the god of the underworld, he had said.
You had heard many people in your village and visitors talking about these deities, worshiping them even, despite no one having met one once. Except for⌠you vaguely remembered an elderly woman journeying through the country once and passing by your house as well. She wanted to spread the news that she had been abducted by the god of the sea when she was younger, but your mother only closed the door in front of her face. Now you wondered whether she had been right all along as you just couldnât wake up from this nightmare.
With a start, when you were able to stand on your own feet without feeling on the brink of fainting from exhaustion again, you pried apart the curtains and were surprisingly delighted to meet with light.
But this feeling evaporated very quickly as you gazed into the distance. The landscape was the greatest contrast to your home country that shone with green fields, towering trees, scentful flowers and golden crops. What dominated the scenery here were rolling plains, mostly treeless with the exception of a few clustered pines. Beneath the sky, everything was tinged in a reddish hue, varying from light orange to crimson. Your field of vision was constrained by a gray mountain range so high, the sharp tops ending in red clouds that were so thick and heavy that no light of any sort was coming through. What caused the red lightning though, you couldnât see.
When you lowered your head, you discovered you were currently on one of the top floors of this dark palace that was built in a foreign, but impressive way. It was a complex, rich system of forts, bastions and towers with sharp tops that sparkled in the reflection of the red lighting and melded with the clouds of the same shade. The building ended several dozen meters below you on a bridge that crossed a vibrant sapphire blue river.
So there was a way out of this palace.Â
âThis is my kingdom and as my wife, it will become yours too.â
You flinched upon hearing his voice, not daring to turn around to him. You hadnât even heard him approaching, when he had caught up to you. If he was the god of the underworld, what kind of power did he possess? You werenât sure whether you ever wanted to find out.
âThis will never become my home.â When you finally faced him, you were sure passion and resistance flickered in your eyes almost as intensely as the sky behind you. Fear was not a term familiar to you now as you cared more about your remaining family. âAnd I will never become your wife. I demand my freedom right now!â
He sighed as though he was the one in the right to get annoyed. âI fear I might not be able to do that.â
âYou brought me here without my consent, you tore me away from my family, you robbed me off my life,â you spat, âand youâre expecting that Iâm going to stay?â
âEven gods cannot defy godly rules.â He stepped closer to the window, but this time, you didnât withdraw, indicating that he didnât have such an effect on you. When he stood next to you, tall and mighty, his presence radiating a threatening aura, you still didnât waver in your position, the growing resentment replacing apprehension. âWhen a human comes to the underworld, they cannot return on their own.â
âAm I-?!â You gasped.
He only snickered dryly as he looked out of the window. âYouâre very far from being dead. Youâre still very much alive.âÂ
âThen I can go back,â you whispered more to yourself, this enlightenment getting your hopes up. You would find a way, with or without his permission.Â
He might be a god, but he didnât own you. He might have stolen you from your home, but he hadnât taken control of your mind, or your body. You were still you, and you would use all of your remaining strength, mentally and physically, to reunite with your family on earth.
The god shifted his head as though catching your silent mantras, looking down at you with an expression almost so unreadable, it seemed on the verge of indifference even. âThere is a way. But do you really think I will let you go after I did everything in my power and beyond that just to get you?â
Stretching out his hand, he grabbed your chin, and despite all the twisting and turning that you did, you werenât able to wind yourself out of his grip. You bared your teeth, hissing under your breath, âIâm not a possession you can decide over. If you wonât let me go, I will do it myself!â
He jerked you towards him with his grip and you let out a squeal that sounded far more worrisome than you had wanted to let slip. But as he had you in control with only his fingers, you couldnât defy the terrified feeling anymore that settled deep in your bones. It showed all in your eyes when he locked gazes with you, his look the total opposite of yours, stern and determined.
Bringing his lips to your ear, the god whispered, âTry, and weâll see what happens.â
When his breath hit your skin, you shuddered. But not in a fearful, dreading way as his grip didnât hurt at all. Goosebumps formed on the spot around your ear, running down to your shoulder and all along your arm, betraying your own body in what you should actually feel right now.
He let you go with a slight smile, observing you from head to toe as though he was able to read your body language. Then, he turned around and left, disappearing into the darkness of the corridor.Â
Rage took over this slight moment of irritation when he was gone, making you kick candelabras out of your way, tearing curtains apart and screaming at the underworld that the opened windows revealed: death, isolation and endless darkness.Â
And then, despair replaced fury and you broke down crying by the window, calling after your mother and sister.
____
âMistress, you need to eat something.â
Ara placed a bowl of the same, plain oatmeal next to you on the bed that you, for the third day in a row, refused to eat. You had lost all your appetite, spending day and night in what had been assigned to be your bedroom, sleeping and weeping. Though day and night didnât differ much from each other down here as you had figured. The days consisted of threatening red sky, the nights of dangerous darkness.
âYou also have to change your clothes, mistress. I selected a few from the closet.â
âWhy wonât he let me go home?â you whispered, turning to the window side away from her and watching the red sky fade into the black one as one single tear slowly rolled down your cheek. âWhy do I need to stay here?â
âOnce youâre here, itâs not so easy to go home, mistress. Almost impossible even.â
âThen why did he bring me here in the first place?â Your voice was hoarse from all the crying the days before, hair greasy and sticking to your skin, eyes puffy and swollen. âIâve always tried so hard to be a good girl again. Do I still deserve this? Is this my very own punishment?â
âI donât know what you mean, mistress, but itâs odd,â Ara stated nearly absent-mindedly, âthe way you humans think. There are humans who would do anything to get into the godly realms, demanding entry into a harem or only bearing the child of one. Youâre the first I encounter who doesnât want all this.âÂ
âWhat do those humans expect from this?âÂ
âEndless satisfaction, glory and youth, mistress. In the godly realms, you cannot age.â
You chuckled bitterly. âOf course.âÂ
âDoesnât this sound alluring to you too?â Ara wanted to know with genuine curiosity. âMy master would be willing to offer you anything you want.â
âAbsolutely not,â you instantly refused. âHaving all your beloved ones die one after another until youâre all alone⌠for eternity? I wouldnât be able to live like that, possessing all that richness but not whatâs most important to me. The only thing I want is my family, nothing else.â
Ara fell into silence. âI donât have a family, so I cannot relate. Itâs nice to meet someone who adores their family though and doesnât want to unalive them like most gods.âÂ
âIâm sorry.â You turned back around to her. âWhat happened to your family?â
âNothing.â She was smiling again. âIâm an ordinary sprite with no powers, I donât know where I originate from. Thatâs what we all are here⌠powerless in our nature, so we end up in a serving position. But Iâm not sad about it. I have a purpose for eternity, itâs better than wandering around with no direction.â
You watched Ara spreading out the dresses on the huge bed. They were all in your favorite pastel colors, the color of the flowers that bloomed in your motherâs garden, the material so luxurious and soft upon touching the hem with your finger tips, you were sure you would have never been able to afford even one dress under normal circumstances.
If this was Araâs only purpose in life, who were you to refuse her offer? A simple favor for someone who had been taking care of you, nothing more. Perhaps, changing your clothes after three days wasnât a bad idea either. You sat up and inspected each dress in detail while asking,Â
âYou said humans demand entry to the godly realms, Ara. Where are they? The people in the harem here, for example.â
Given the possibility of staying young and wandering around in these rich clothes forever, living a lush lifestyle, you could very well imagine that other humans would do anything to be in your position now. But you werenât one of those, you didnât care about luxury, goods and money.
âMy master doesnât have a harem, mistress, nor do other mortals live here in his palace. Itâs only us, other houseworkers and servants.â
âOh. I was expectingâŚâ You didnât know what you had expected, but you werenât surprised either. The darkness in this kingdom wasnât very inviting to live in until eternity after all.Â
âHow about this dress, mistress?â Ara held up a light blue gown made of silk with long, almost translucent sleeves and cut-out in the back. You had never worn something as daring but also as beautiful as this. âI will bathe you and do your hair the way you prefer.â
âWhat would I need it for?â Only now you noticed that your stomach was growling. Although plain oats didnât smell deliciously tempting, your body was telling you that you desperately needed to be fed. You already saw yourself giving in to your needs and devouring the oatmeal.
âTo meet with my master,â Ara replied as though a given, and you froze.
âNo!â you protested, causing her to flinch at your loud erupt. âTell him Iâm not going to meet up with him nor do I ever want to see him again! Even if I die here, I donât ever want to see him again. I will find a way out myself and I will escape from this place. This, you can tell him.â
âMy master assumed that youâd react this way, so he wants you to know that if you meet up with him tonight, he will tell you how your family is doing.â
Your stomach hollowed and not only from hunger as dread filled the empty space and your fingers gripped the sheets, tensely. You suddenly felt so sick at the thought of what he could do to your family out there if he really was so powerful. Would it now always be like this? That he would threaten and you had to comply for the sake of your beloved onesâ safety?
âFine.â
In the bathroom, where Ara gently scrubbed your skin with oil that smelled of meadows, massaged your scalp in calming rhythms and washed your hair with white foam, you broke out in tears again, but she didnât say a word and let you cry in silence. At home, bathing was a luxury you were only able to enjoy once a week in a small wooden basin.
Your homesickness came in waves, especially in the evenings when you missed the warm body of your little sister pressed into you from behind, the bed way too small for the both of you, but she was always refusing to sleep at your motherâs side on the bigger mattress as she felt too old for that already.
When Ara dried your body and hair, you were still weeping, but her careful yet comfortable treatment made it all a bit more bearable.
____
âHave a seat, little rose.â
The god was seated at the head on the far end of the long table, and although your set of plate and cutlery were placed right next to his, you seated yourself on a chair opposite of him where you were the farthest away. Immediately, a servant came by to relocate the tableware.
âDonât call me that.âÂ
âDonât you like that name?â he asked, arrogantly feigning offense. âI think it matches very well with you. A flower from earth, looking and smelling so beautifully, but bearing sharp thorns that sheâs not afraid to use.â
At first, you were confident to interpret his words as an insult, but when you repeated them in your head once more, you werenât sure whether they leaned more towards a compliment as there was something in his tone that gave the impression, and it irritated you very much.
âWhy have you moved away from me?â The god leniently crossed his hands behind his head and leaned back on his chair, no crown adorning his hair this time. âYou donât have to be afraid. If I wanted to hurt you, you would surely not sit here now, invited to dine with me.âÂ
âAfraid?â You frowned at him and lifted your chin. âIâm not afraid of you. I just donât want to be near you for your own sake, in case I want to stab you. Though depending on what you have to tell me about my family, I canât guarantee it wonât still happen.â
Amusement played around the godâs lips in the form of a smug smile, your answer apparently surprising him entirely. âYouâre a very interesting one, little rose, I must admit.â
âIs that why Iâm here? Because you find me interesting?â
The servant placed a napkin on your lap, causing your mouth to water already. You were dreaming of a feast consisting of meat, potatoes, vegetables and fruits. At home, those things were rarely served together, but you assumed that in a palace as huge as this, it was something you could look forward to for dinner.Â
In such a rare moment, you allowed yourself to be greedy. Mutedly begging for apology, you thought that if it stayed in your head only like all the other things you had sinned for, it wouldnât taint your image anymore. Nobody had to know if you didnât voice it out or act on it obviously.
âI find many things interesting.â The god snipped his fingers and you flinched. âBut boring humans donât belong to that category.â
âYet, you stole one of these boring humans away to make her your bride.â
The next moment, another servant opened the door and brought in two bowls, one placed in front of him, the other in front of you. You were trying your best to hide your disappointed expression, but were sure that you failed when you saw what was in the bowl: plain porridge like the past few days and what you had nipped on shortly before. AndÂ
âOthers would trade everything they have to be in your place now.â
Your fingers hovered over the cutlery, but you withdrew them again, not wanting to give in yet, despite your stomach making demanding noises that mustnât have passed by the god himself. Either this was his way of subtly punishing you while you were residing here, but that wouldnât explain why he didnât eat something else in front of you. Or this was the only food served in the underworld. Neither assumption satisfied you.Â
âIâm not like others. Iâm not a boring simpleton. I have responsibilities, a family to take care of. How can I reside here in peace when my family cannot even afford a life without me?â
âBecause now they can,â he replied simply.
You tilted her head in confusion. âWhat?âÂ
âLet me assure you that your family has been taken care of. The day I brought you here, they were greatly supplied with a chest consisting of pure gold that will last them their lifetime and the generations after them.â
You shuddered visibly, having no intention to pay weight to his words. âThatâs not the main reason. How am I supposed to reside in this palace and live carefreely when I cannot be certain my family is healthy and happy every day, when Iâm not there to witness how they do without me?âÂ
âSuch a peculiar way of thinking, I have never encountered this before,â he carefully said. âThe humans who trade and bargain with us gods just to get the same privileges as you never look back, not even the ones who hadnât decided on their own to enter the godly realms. When they see what kind of lifestyle awaits them here, they fold instantly. But you arenât so selfish. Youâre right. Youâre no âsuchâ mortal. Maybe I shouldnât have picked a flower with thorns like you, little rose.â
âThen set me free.â You glared at him across the table. âMy family doesnât care about gold or money. We just want to be together.â
He pursed his lips and sighed. âAs I said, itâs difficult.â
âI donât trust you,â you eventually pressed through gritted teeth, resting your fingers on the edge of the bowl, then pushing the porridge away from you. âI donât believe anything you say.â
He leaned forward and propped his elbows on the table in preparation to speak with his attention only on you. âI have no reason to lie to you, but I also wonât force you to trust me. Iâm just telling you that I understand if youâre wary, considering the circumstances.âÂ
âThen tell me why you keep me captured,â you demanded again, suppressing your surprise over his honesty.
âAnd then you will eat?â You didnât understand why he even cared in the first place if the porridge wasnât poisoned, but agreed with a slight nod just to get the reply out of him. âFine. Youâre here, because I need a wife to keep me company. I can offer you everything a female human could ever dream of - a luxurious home with endless space, dresses in all colors under the rainbow, delicious food that doesnât even grow on earth, and gold to fulfill all your further needs.â
You gulped visibly, but held his gaze. So the porridge truly was punishment only, physically and emotionally. âThatâs⌠thatâs all?â
He shrugged, not touching his bowl either, you noticed. âTruth to be told, I thought it would be easier according to the stories Iâve been told. Other gods own harems full of humans who live lavish lifestyles until all eternity.â
âSo I heard,â you retorted, utterly grossed out.
âI also admit that, apparently, I know nothing about humans.â A smile tugged on the corner of his lips that quickly evaporated again. Or had it only been in your imagination? âCertainly not about ones like you.â
You cocked a brow. âHumans like me?â
âStrong-willed, demanding, determined. Either I am very lucky in choosing you as my wife. Or rather unfortunate. Weâre going to figure it out, right?â
âAgain, I am not going to be your wife.â When he didnât make a move to add something, you asked, âThatâs all? Thatâs why Iâm here? Because you needed a wife and I was just⌠there?â
Frankly, the god apparently didnât know what else to tell you, what you wanted to hear from him. Did you know yourself, though? What kind of explanation did you expect to make you understand your current situation better?Â
âThatâs all.â
With a start, you jumped out of your seat, the chair making squealing noises as you pushed it along the marbled floor. You glared at him so deathly, it would possibly make every other god fear your presence. But he didnât budge.Â
âIâd rather die.â
____
âMy master wanted me to bring you here, because he assumed you would feel a bit better in an environment resembling your home.â
A few more days had passed without you having to meet the god again, plain porridge being brought by Ara directly to your room, assuring you that real food was still being withheld from you, but you also didnât want to ask and cave. You werenât crying every day anymore, either because there were no tears left or because you knew it was for vain.
You hadnât entirely given up though. The god and Ara both had implied that there was a way for you to return. Even if it might be almost impossible, almost was not entirely. But if neither of them were going to tell or show you how, you would rather figure it out yourself than sit here in captivity and boredom if either possibility would result in you not seeing your family ever again.
So it was a lucky coincidence that Ara had brought you to the palaceâs garden, and you would lie if you said that you werenât in the least bit impressed about it, because it had everything you had ever dreamed of growing and tending back at home.
You stood there, on green grass with your fine slippers, feeling every soily bump beneath your soles, and what you encountered amazed you very much. Patterned throughout the grass were different paths made of cobblestone, passing by rose bushes, colorful flower beds, perfectly trimmed hedges and marble statues that all came together in the middle of the location where a fountain made of limestone stood out, water splashing all around.
âThis is magnificent!â you called out and followed the path that led to the center, the entire colorful and playful setting building a stark contrast to the red sky, but this was what made it insanely beautiful too, you had to admit. âI didnât know something would be able to grow here!â Since you had been brought to the underworld, there was finally something that remotely awoke interest inside of you and let you push your pain and despair to the back of your head only for a little while.
âContrary to popular belief, we can also grow fruits and vegetables here. See?â
Ara pointed at a tree that you were passing, red pomegranates hanging from the branches. After weeks of nearly tasteless porridge that was supposed to break your iron will, only the image of the crimson seeds caused your mouth to water immediately. They had been withholding this from you all along? The things you would have done just to taste something different were unimaginable, and you stretched out your hand, reaching for the fruit. You were just so hungryâŚ
âCareful!â Ara warned you.
You reclined your hand, alarmed. âWhat is it?â
âSeven seeds.â A manly vice from behind you let you jump. âSeven seeds only, and youâll be stuck here forever. Take one and you wonât be able to stop, because they taste so ungraspable wonderfully on a human tongue. Everything growing in the underworld will bind you to this realm and you will never be able to return to earth ever again.â The god walked towards you both and Ara did a curtsy while you refused to copy her greeting. âThank you for bringing her here, youâre dismissed, Ara.â
You were petrified when a thought slowly sank in while the servant left you both alone. âBut Iâve been eating-â
âMortal food all along,â the god clarified. Today, he was dressed more casually and wasnât wearing a crown like the last time you had met, you silently remarked. âThatâs why you were served plain oats only. At least they always taste the same. Everything else we bring down here from earth rots right away. Theyâre living things, not made for death.â
You looked at the pomegranate tree, then back at him. You had been served porridge from your first day on before you even met, and a few days ago, he had been served the same dish as you, hadnât he? Why? âYou could have easily fed me these all along, and I wouldnât have known. Why havenât you?â
âI decide over the fates of the dead humans, not the living. I guess I always wanted to give you a choice, no matter how slim this chance might be. Deep inside, I assume I just couldnât take someone against their will entirely.â His honesty bewildered you. That was not what he had indicated the first time you talked. âEven if youâre a human, you always have a choice. Even now you do.â
âI havenât been given the choice whether I wanted to come down here,â you spoke monotonously, shaking off the expression he directed at you that nearly bordered sympathy.Â
The god lifted his hand and plucked a pomegranate from the tree. Twisting it apart and presenting the red seeds in equal halves to you, your tongue instantly lusted after the taste of the fruitâs delicious flesh. You had only tasted pomegranate seeds once in your life, back then when you had saved enough money to buy a half from a piepowder. But you still remembered that moment very well, because it was so special.
âI was probably too naive as I have never been to the mortal world myself. I could only rely on what the other gods told me, and they all said the same thing.â
âWhich was?â You averted your eyes from the pomegranate halves before you went insane from hunger.Â
âThat humans would do anything to live in the godly realms, leeching off everything they were offered, such as luxury and eternal youth. That humans are simpletons you could control, could do anything with.â He clearly saw you gulping, which was probably why he quickly added, âBut I only wanted a wife, so I took my sweet time making a decision that day. A wrong and hasty decision after all, as it turned out that Iâm the simpleton here.â He plucked the seeds from the pomegranate halves and placed them into his hand. You counted seven. Then, he squeezed his palm together, red juice dripping from his fingers onto the soil, staining it like blood. âYou better make sure not to go near these in case your craving makes you go crazy.â
To weigh yourself in better safety, you turned your face away from him. âHow do I get away from here? Tell me.â
The god drew in a sharp breath. âSomeone must get you. Someone from earth must come down here and take you back.â
You got a feeling you didnât want to know the details to that âAnd how would they do that?â
To that, he didnât seem to have a specific answer. âI cannot tell you as I donât know exactly myself. I heard that there are ways humans can actually summon certain gods, and depending who they are able to reach, they might help if theyâre in the mood. The god of the sea demands a human offering for example, but the god of the wind on the other hand just doesn't want his mortal companion to speak a single word all the way to our realms.â
âWhy would they do that to humans?â you called out in frustration. âThatâs madness!â
âTo bargain with a god is a very dangerous game that they love to play all day long. Humans are pawns to them, a mere distraction to their boring lives.â A touch of snideness swung with his explanation that you couldnât classify yet and thus dismissed.
âAnd what would you demand to bring humans here if you donât take them against their will?â
The god rolled his pupils, his patience seemingly still not wearing out while you just wouldnât let go of this topic when he replied full with regained composure, âNobody ever did that, itâs quite not possible since my kingdom is separated from the mortal realms. But the gods of the elements or other parts of the earth are always there.â
âSo that means⌠My mother and my sister have to find their own way to come down here. And depending on who they can reach out to, they either face an impossible quest or death?â
âNot very positively worded, but right.â He shrugged. âI guess so. Of course this applies to any human who would search for you, not only to them.â
âAnd before that happens, I will need to stay here?âÂ
âThatâs correct.â
When you sucked in a rush of air, he braced himself for an outburst, but you only asked with a threatening calmness, âWhy me?â
For such a question, the god apparently wasnât prepared well enough. And even if⌠you were sure his answer wouldnât have changed from the following dissatisfying one, âAs I said, I was given the chance to wander the earth for a day and choose a wife.â
âThatâs not what I meant. I asked âWhy me?â What did I do? Why not someone else?â
For the first time, you got the impression that you had taken him off guard as he raised his brows, not to talk back haughtily, but because he was genuinely confused and didnât know how to answer. âWhy⌠you? I canât exactly say why youâŚâÂ
âSo, the fact that Iâm here is merely a coincidence?â There was a sharp edge to the way you uttered these words, and you nearly felt sorry. Nearly.
âI wouldnât say that,â he patiently defended himself in that situation. âIt was still my own decision. But the reasonâŚâ
âBe quiet! I have never been given a choice!â You laid your palms flat against his chest, pushing him away from you while anger burned beneath your skin like fever. He stumbled backwards although he could fight you easily. But he didnât. âYou have robbed me of that decision the day you stole me away! You have only fed me mortal food to satisfy your own conscience, but I have never been given a choice in the first place! Donât talk to me like you actually respect humans, because you donât!â
You saw him startled as if he were human too, a natural, human reaction, and that fueled your anger even more. âBut if someone comes to-â
âNobody will come to get me!â you yelled. âNobody will come, because my mother and sister arenât able to! I only have them, no one else! Iâll be stuck here, and all because of you! I have no free will! You have chosen the only human with no choice at all!â
You spun around on your heel and left the garden with him not following suit. And you were glad about it as the first tears started to fall again.
______
You spent your days restlessly wandering through the entire palace and the connecting garden, with no real destination other than the intention of wanting to make time pass in hope something life-alternating would happen. But it never did.
You rarely saw the god and you were grateful for that, only remaining in contact with Ara and the other servants. But despite them trying their best, they werenât able to fill the gap your family had left. With each passing day, the hole inside of you grew larger. And with each passing day, you wondered how much bigger it must still grow until it made you end this once and for all.
Once again, you were standing in the garden, listening to the stream while having to watch the god cross the bridge every morning and evening to ride somewhere past the horizon as you started to notice a few days ago. You had never asked him about where he was going even though you were very curious about what laid beyond the river. If you wanted to find out thoughâŚ
âI wouldnât even think about it,â you heard an unknown male voice talk behind you that wasnât as deep as this palaceâs owner. âThatâs the river of oblivion. Once you fall into it, you forget where you are, what you are and first and foremost⌠who you are.â
You spun around and encountered a man only a bit shorter than the god of this place with flaming, dark red hair, donned in all black with golden embellishments. You had never seen him here before, and his glamorous garments as well as sophisticated and elegant aura gave away that he was not a servant, but of a much higher status and with much power.
âJaehyun told me that he had taken in a human to make his wife, so I wanted to see her myself.â
Jaehyun⌠In comparison to the god of this realm whose name was Jaehyun as you now knew, this person had a much friendlier appearance with a smile that was inviting and a voice that sounded playful. âAnd you areâŚ?â
âThe god of sun and light, and everything bright and pleasant. Iâm very pleased to meet you, mistress.â
He stretched out his hand and took your fingers into his. Oddly, you didnât withdraw but let him do so as you werenât scared of him. After everything that had happened to you these past weeks, you felt numb to almost everything.
You sucked in a rush of air though as he lifted your hand and led it to his lips, pressing a kiss on our knuckles and causing you to gasp in surprise. It was not your first physical interaction with a man apart from your family, but the first with no ulterior motif from either side, a chaste and respectful gesture. You were taken aback and impressed at the same time.
âI must admit⌠if I were Jaehyun, I would have chosen you as well.â
You were flattered, but not impressed. âIt doesnât change the fact that I donât like being here.â
âAfter all this time you still think like this?â He raised his brows. âIâm impressed. Every other mortal would have caved already.â
âWell⌠Iâm not like them.â
âObviously.â He tilted his head and smiled again. âHave you ever tried getting accustomed to this place? Itâs not as boring as it looks like. Especially beyond the river. Even though I prefer the light, this darkness has something comforting, I must admit.â
âEnough, Taeyong,â another male voice cut through the air that you knew very well. âI didnât invite you here today to put ideas into her head.â
âEven I see her potential, Jaehyun,â your new acquaintance talked back immediately. âTake her with you to the ha-â
âI said enough,â the god interrupted. âShe has expressed more than once that she wants to go home, so if you donât have a solution for that, I would rather have you stay quiet.â
âWhat is there?â you urged the sun god to speak, suddenly full of hope again. âWhat is beyond the river?â
But it was the underworldâs god that answered instead, âThere is only death, so donât even think about escaping through these lands. There is no way you will make it out there alive all by yourself.â
And with that, the topic was closed as he disappeared with the sun god back into the palace, leaving you behind in wonder about what there still was to this realm that you had to unravel. If you wanted to unravel that.
Later that evening, you caught Taeyong intending to leave through the main entrance, luckily all by himself. You jumped out from your den, causing him to nearly get a heart attack judging by the way he leapt back with a scream, and asked with a hushed voice,
âWhat is beyond the river of oblivion?â
Your fingers grabbed the sleeves of his shirt, and he leaned in to you, replying with an equally low tone, âHeâs right, there is only death. But that is probably what you are looking for.â
And with another smile, he left through the gates, having opened up more questions than actually having answered one.Â
____
âWhere are you going?â
Jaehyun cocked his head to the side on his way out of the palace when he got surprised by you in the entrance hall the next day. âUnderworld duties.â
âTake me with you,â you demanded, noticing that he was formally dressed and wearing his crown again as always when he left the palace. âItâs where you always leave to, right? Take me with you.â
He frowned. âWhat?â
âYou heard me very well. I want to come with you,â you repeated and approached him until you stood right in front of him, already fully dressed in a cloak that Ara had pulled out of the closet for you. âTake me with you.â
He looked down at you, then let out an ambiguous chuckle. âYou think if I take you with me out there, you will find a way to escape? You can put that idea right out of your mind. As a mortal, there are more gruesome fates than falling into the river of oblivion that will await you when you roam out there freely all by yourself. This is the underworld, after all.â
It didnât pass by you that he, for the first time, used the term âmortalsâ, not âhumansâ, a fine but significant difference. You wondered whether not all gods and sprites and whatever creatures also resided here were immortal. And if he was immortal too.
It was as though he could read everything shooting through your mind at that moment. Skepticism, anger, disappointment, then again, hope. He had seen right through you. But perhaps not entirely though as there was something he hadnât discovered yet: the slight seed of curiosity that had been planted by the god of sun yesterday.
What was beyond the river that you were supposedly looking for?Â
âStill,â you brought yourself to say and clenched your fists, moving your feet in restlessness. âTake me with you. What am I supposed to do here all day, all by myself?âÂ
âNo,â the god roared, deep and dominant, and you actually withdrew in response to his suppressed outburst. Regret turned visible in his expression as though he hadnât intended to sound so harsh as he continued gentler, âNo mortal has ever roamed the grounds of hell, and I wonât be the first one to allow one to do so.â
But you wouldnât give in so easily. âTake me with you nonetheless!â You took a few steps forward until you stood right in front of him and with your fists, you now hammered against his chest. âTake. Me. With. You!âÂ
Coming down at his strong muscles with your hands over and over again, it felt like striking against those palace stone walls, sharp pain shooting up to your shoulders with each forceful motion, and it made you even madder. You now screamed, wanting your way and letting your anger and despair all out - but he withstood it all.
Even when you exhausted yourself, you didnât give up, even when your motions grew slower and sloppier, your breathing more irregular. That was until he caught your striking fists with his palms, stopping your rebelling behavior with a single grip, obviously fed up now. His hands were so big in comparison to yours, and so unexpectedly warm and strong too.
âYou done?â the god asked relaxedly when you had finally stopped fidgeting.
You had your teeth bared, glaring at him, but you weren't physically fighting anymore. Your chest heaved up and down, in unison with his, and for a moment, you both had your gazes locked, surveying each other until a smile raised the corners of his mouth, and it wasnât in the least bit mocking.
You became aware of the fact that the god was still holding your hands, but it was something entirely else from when the sun god had taken yours into his. They were both gestures with different intentions, but somehow, this one caused your cheeks to heat and change color, and additionally, your heart to skip half a beat.Â
With feigned disgust, you scowled and shook him off, then hid your arms behind your back in the safety of the cloak.
âIâll get the horse prepared for two people.â The god looked at you for a second too long, which irritated you very much, then spun around. You didnât know what had made him change his mind, but in the end, it didnât matter. âPull up the hood and make sure to protect your face at all times. The ride can get really dusty.â
As you followed him outside, there was a black-maned horse waiting for you both. You stood behind him, intimidated and amazed by the enormous animal at the same time.Â
âImmortal horses are fascinating, arenât they?â he asked you. âEvery god owns at least one divinely-bred.â
He swung upon the horseâs back after a servant had saddled it properly for two, moving backwards to leave more space in the front. The next moment, he had grabbed you by your waist and heaved you on the horseâs back like you weighed nothing. Luckily, your skirts were wide enough for you to settle your legs on either side of the animal.Â
The god then hauled you against his chest with one swift motion, his strong forearm pressed into your upper stomach. Before you could snap for air, he loosened his grip on you again, but left his hand resting right under your ribcage, always on the alert to secure your position if you tended to teeter too much to one side. You swallowed hard as the horse started galloping, and before you could notice, the both of you had already crossed the dangerous bridge with its eerie turquoise water, snippets flashing by that you only caught from the corner of your periphery under your wide hood.Â
You knew your attention shouldnât be on the main riderâs free hand gripping hard on the reins that made his veins pop out and your thoughts spinning with fantasies you had never had of him before, but you couldnât turn your thoughts away from it either. Pleasant goosebumps ran all down your spine whenever you lost your balance for a second and his strong arm around your middle reared you right back.
You didnât want this. Of course, as a young woman, you had needs and also a fair share of past experiences, but none of it had ever surfaced since you were residing here.
Until now.
____
While you were riding along the rolling plains, you came to a terrifying solution: The redness of the sky didnât come from the sun and neither from another natural source of light in the underworld that would resemble a planet back up there on earth. In fact, they came from fields far out there close to the horizon. These fields were burning, flames ascending to the sky whose tips you only witnessed when you passed and eventually came to a stop close by.
âThese are the torture fields,â the god told you. âItâs where souls reside who I refuse to let be reborn. As you might have figured by now, itâs why our sky is always red. The flames never diminish, they only get concealed by the god of sky during night time upon my request.â
âWhy did you request for him to conceal it?â
âThe red sky reminds me of what Iâm doing, what my destiny as the god of the underworld is. If I can request for a few hours of peace where Iâm not reminded of the souls on the torture fields that I sent down there myself, that I am the one causing this red sky, I would do anything for it.â
It was the second time he willingly let you take a quick glance behind his facade, his cold and dark exterior. You wondered whether there was still way more you would need to discover. But would you really want to?
âWhatâs the fate of those on these torture fields?â you asked instead.
âImagine the worst pain youâve ever felt. Maybe you have once broken a bone or sustained a similar fracture. Now, thatâs not even the full extent of pain a human is able to feel. Multiply it by a thousand. Thatâs close to the pain you have to endure day and night, for all eternity. Frightening, isnât it?â
Frightening didnât even come close to describe the lump in your throat right now. A cold shudder ran down your spine despite you putting much effort into not letting your true emotions slip. âDo they literally burn there on the fields?â
âSomething like that, yes. If you listen carefully, little rose, you can even hear their screams. My palace is located too far away, but right now, weâre close enough to hear their faint noises.â He brought the horse to a halt and gave you a sign to remain silent as well. âListen.â
You did. From the direction of the torture fields, you heard a feeble clamor as though someone was constantly pressing on a pianoâs keyboard, and the tone never subsided. It was a very faint sound, but so eerie that it made the hair on your arms stand up. You imagined pain so gravely, you were never able to stop screaming in agony despite the exhaustion. For all eternity.
âDonât worry, little rose,â the god reassured you, and you didnât flinch when he soothingly nudged your side. It had something calming to it. âSomeone like you wonât ever land on the torture fields.â
You wished you could believe him and gulped, hard. âWhat kind of souls would find their fate here?â
âMurderers mostly, to summon it up. But I decide over all their fates individually, so it might also be possible that someone has committed a grave crime that doesnât include murder and still ends up on the torture fields. And vice versa.â
You had been holding in your breath and only noticed when you let out a rush of air. âI see.â
âWhy are you so tense, little rose?â the god expressed his concern that seemed genuine to you. âSomeone as pure as you and with a heart as strong as yours would surely get another chance at life.â
âYou donât know me,â you answered repellently, but didnât shake off his hand that had magically found its way on your shoulder as though he wanted to comfort you physically like a human, but didnât exactly know how. âYou know nothing about me, you cannot tell.â
âThatâs true. But I cannot imagine you being a human who deserves to experience endless torture, and Iâve been with my duties for way longer than I can remember.â
âPerhaps, there are times where even you will get surprised.â It was intended to be a joke, but your dry voice didnât make the sentence sound like one, which was why you added a light, choking laughter.Â
âWhat could you have possibly done? Slept with someone before marriage? Screw that, just have fun. Stolen groceries? A peccadillo, nothing grave to be noted down, and even minuscule when you were poor and suffering from hunger. What else? Hurt someone? Most people only physically hurt when they feel threatened or have been hurt themselves before. I could tell you many, many more examples that wonât justify a destiny on the torture fields for you.â
You werenât an appropriate girl in any sense as you had done all of the things he listed, and even many more. Feeling bound to your family for your whole life, you had never quite treasured your virginity until marriage like every other girl and had had way too much fun in the millerâs barn with his eldest son before you came here. Whenever you seemed short of groceries, you had developed a few tricks where letting fruits and vegetables slip into your bag during market visits always went unnoticed. And you randomly and happily thought back to the time you had once smacked a boy who had made fun of your sister and your situation.
And the god of the underworld wanted to tell you that these were all still justifiable?Â
âNo human is untainted, free of sins, little rose,â he continued. âBut that doesnât make every person a bad one. As a matter of fact, the majority are good people, and I can sense them from a mile away. Youâre not a bad person who deserves to endure agony for eternity.â
You rather let him believe for as long as he could.
Though he added, âEverything will come out in the hall of judgment anyway.â
âThe hall of judgment?â you asked carefully.
âWhere weâre headed to now. Thatâs where I comply with my duties as the god of the underworld.â As though he noticed your disarray, he added with an edge, âYou wanted to come with me, right? So be prepared for that.â
Nothing could have prepared you for what was about to come next.
____
The hall of judgment was a massive cave rather than an actual hall in the semi-darkness of a mountain range that had the river of oblivion flow through. The hollowed ceiling was carried by large pillars merging seamlessly with the stony inside, a long carpet indicating the way. There were only several candles alit, the flames mirrored and broken in the river that threw the reflected lighting into all directions.Â
You were sitting next to the god on a throne of which you were unsure whether it had been there for your entire stay already as he had initially intended you to be his wife. Nonetheless, it made you feel inquisitive and intimidating at the same time, as though you didnât belong there but couldnât request being placed elsewhere either.
âThis is where the souls face me, where I decide about their fate. And today, you will assist me,â the god explained after he had settled next to you.
âAssist you?â You werenât repressed, but rather intrigued about what was going to happen here.
âYouâre not going to watch me only, youâre going to judge yourself, whether you send a soul into the river of oblivion from where they will start a new life or send them to the torture fields for eternal pain.â
You frowned, full of suspicion whether you had heard right. âPardon me? I will decide about their fate? Me?â
âExactly,â he confirmed with a proud smile.
You raised a brow, but didnât refuse instantly, to your very own surprise too. âHow do I know what happened to them?â
âThey will tell you.â
âAnd if they donât speak the truth?â
âIn the hall of judgment, you are only allowed to speak the truth, otherwise you cannot answer.â
You had many more questions, but since you had already delayed your arrival, you decided to remain silent and just watch. You trusted him to tell you what to do and when to do, and until then, you would only observe. To your clear surprise, a human in its physical shape walked in the next moment, a young boy, not even ten years of age just yet. Just like your sister.Â
âThey all remain in their human form so as to not shock them,â the god explained quietly while the boy made its way towards you. âThey will lose their physical shape once I make my judgment, but by then, they wonât remember anymore.â
Your expression changed from perplexity to empathy when you encountered the state the young boy was in, ragged clothes, no shoes. He explained that he came right from the streets, having lived there for a few years already.
The child was nervously kneading his wrinkled hat in his hands as he stuttered, âM-my father died overseas w-when I was only a baby. My- my mother was the sole one t-to get us through the first years. U-until we ran out of money. Sh-she died shortly after and I⌠I had to start living on the streets a-all by myself.â
âFor how many years did you live on the streets?â you asked empathically, not knowing whether you were even allowed to, but it didnât matter to you at this point. You felt so much sympathy for him, your heart ached.
The boy dropped his head. âThree years.â
You gasped inaudibly, not wanting to unsettle the boy. Instead, you forced yourself to smile, the sorrow undertone hidden by concealing happiness. âYou did well. For your age, you did so well. You can be proud of yourself. Your mother surely is too.â
âC-can I ask how did I die?â
âYou slept in peacefully and didnât wake up,â you started, and the god frowned, but didnât interrupt you, which you appreciated. âIt was really cold, but it didnât bother you, because for you, it felt like a warm blanket that you got enveloped in. Perhaps, almost like the one in your former home with which your mom would tuck you in. Did you have something like that?â
With sparkles in his eyes, the boy nodded enthusiastically. âYes, I remember!â
âVery well. That moment, you dreamed back to your warm house where there were the three of you. You died peacefully, engulfed in a dream that felt like reality.â
The boy started crying, and you wanted to get up with the intention of offering him a comforting embrace, but the godâs hand latched out onto yours, holding you back. Locking your gazes, he shook his head and you slowly settled back on your throne. âDead souls cannot be touched,â he whispered only for you to hear. âOtherwise they are doomed to wander these lands forever as nightmarish creatures.â
âW-what w-ill m-m-my judgment b-be?â the boy hiccuped as you shifted your attention back to him.
You held yourself back this time to leave the decision to the god himself, but he remained quiet, only giving you a squeeze with his fingers that were still covering yours, both of your hands lying on your side of the armrest. Then, he nodded encouragingly.
So you spoke softly, âYou will get to leave this miserable life behind. You will get to start a new life. You donât have to suffer anymore.â
âThank you.â
And while he was still expressing his gratitude, the god caught you shedding some light tears yourself, but you were smiling throughout them in all honesty, because you were so happy that the little boy wouldnât need to continue living in a world that had been so cruel to him.
When the boy followed a servant to the outside after the god had officially pronounced the sentence that you had decided on, he started explaining, âThe moment they step into the hall, I know their backstories, I have to tell you. They only explain their own opinion and point of view to me. Since you donât have that privilege, I let them tell their backstories too. For the little boy, he actually died wh-â
âNo,â you declined determinedly, emphasized by the shake of your head. âI donât want to know. Perhaps, you donât understand, but Iâm not immune to feelings unlike you who has been doing this for so long. There is only so much I can take in and carry before every single story will break me apart over and over again. Perhaps, itâs better this way, safer. I want to stand by the stories I tell them.â
âIâm not immune either.â The look you shared that followed was something between surprise and a mutual understanding, until he followed up, âSo you want to remain?âÂ
âI want to remain.â
In a gesture of encouragement, he squeezed your hand again, only now realizing that he hadnât let go of it all along and that you hadnât shaken him off, either.

By the evening, the god of the underworld had pronounced the sentence to all souls, you only chiming in when it was a case you could relate to, a case which needed a more emotional approach. In the beginning, it had been an overwhelming feeling for you, holding oneâs destiny in your hands as the god of the underworld complied to all the judgments you made without a word of protest.Â
It made you feel⌠powerful. And helpful, equally. You were able to take the pain away from these sad souls and plant a more pleasant last memory of their former life into their invisible hearts. No matter the real circumstances of their deaths, you always spun stories more pleasant for their ears, so the majority of souls were allowed to jump into the pool of oblivion, looking forward to a new life.
âMy wife killed me, that bitch.â A middle-aged man spat in front of the dais later that day. âI should have taken her with me.â
You leaned forward, resting your elbows on your thigh as you pricked up your ears. It was late already, and you started to get exhausted which was why the god had suggested going home after this case. Though this case would turn out way more different than the ones before, you could solely tell by looking at the man.
His obvious rampant demeanor had caught your attention right away, so you asked calmly, âTell me in detail, what did you do to your wife?â
"Nothing!" he defended himself loudly. âI did no-â
You remembered that no one was able to lie in the hall of judgment which was apparently why no tone came out of his mouth anymore despite him continuing blabbering. You averted your eyes to your right, wanting to know how the god would react.Â
You didnât expect anything less than the following, âYou really dare lie in front of the god of the underworld himself?â
âPlease!â The man dropped to his knees and brought his hands together under his chin. âI did nothing wrong in my opinion!â
âHow about we let your mistress decide whether you did something wrong to your wife, hm?â the god asked threateningly, his eyes narrowed.
âI only wanted to teach her a lesson,â the man pressed through gritted teeth. âIf she hadnât stayed out for so long, I wouldnât have had to use my hands.â
Your fingers cramped around the armrests, uneasiness settling in where also nausea spread in your stomach, but the latter way faster. You already knew the end to the story before he could draw the entire outline. Again, like before when you had met cases that left you nearly breathless, the godâs palm found its way back to your hand, blanketing it, and his warmth somehow soothed your anger, restraining it. Somehow, you felt it had the same effect on him.
âHow often did you hurt your wife?â you wanted to hear from the man.
âAs often as I needed to.â There was no remorse in his voice. âWives have to be obedient to their husbands, and if they arenât, we have to remind them of our higher position.â
Anger burned in your veins, the knuckles on your fingers turning white, and even the godâs reassuring gesture could not hold you back from what you were about to say next anymore, âSo you think lowly of women because we are female?â
âItâs what nature prescribes!â the man yelled.
âDo you have children?â you interrogated further, your fingers shaking by now. You were so close to jumping off your seat and physically taking it upon yourself.
âMy wife never gifted me with one,â he tsk-ed. âAnother task in which she has failed me as a woman.â
A growl was collecting on your tongue, and you nearly let the sound slip if it werenât for the god cutting you off, âAnd yet, after your death, you stand in front of one. And this very one is deciding about your fate today.â
âOh?â The man took a step back. âForgive me, I havenât known.â
âHow about you tell your mistress about the child you deemed unfitting to continue living, no matter how hard it was for your wife to even conceive in the first place? Or the bar woman you impregnated instead, but chased away because you rather wanted to spend the money on alcohol? Or the rich man you once robbed and killed, all in one night?â
You didnât need to put a second thought into your decision. He sounded exactly like the kind of man your father had been - ruthless, selfish, and so full of apathy, your chest swelled to the point of exploding.
âTo the torture fields with him.â
It was the first time for you to use these words, you didnât recognize your own voice.
____
You sent a man to the torture fields and you enjoyed it.
Even after returning to the palace, you still werenât able to digest the latest happenings. Again. And again, like in the past, you didnât feel any remorse afterwards. You felt satisfaction even.
âIs it always like this?â you asked when you stood in the entrance hall of the dark palace. âThis lingering feeling ofâŚâ
â... satisfaction.â A slight smirk was playing around the godâs lips when he looked at your eager expression. âYes. It absolutely is.â
âWow,â you breathed, overwhelmed by so much power you had never imagined of ever possessing. âBut⌠what if I made the wrong decision?â
Was that what the sun god had wanted you to see? A side inside of you that you had repressed for so long? The potential you offered when you were sitting on the throne right next to the god of the underworld?
âThere is no right or wrong in the hall of judgment. There is only one truth. And the truth in that case was that you passed judgment on someone who deserved their fate.â He inhaled deeply before breaking down to you, âThat is why I want to offer you the throne next to mine.â
Your head snatched upwards and you drew your brows together in suspicion. âWhat are you saying?â
âI offer you the title âthe queen of the underworldâ,â he repeated more clearly, gaze unwavering but not inscrutable. He meant every single syllable, no underlying joke in his voice, the smirk entirely gone and his dark eyes clear.Â
âIâm not going to be your wife,â you declined immediately again, your voice failing you though, and you were afraid heâd notice.
âI donât want you to become my wife in that sense if you find that thought so repulsive.â There was a chuckle simultaneously rolling from his tongue. âI offer you the position of the queen of the underworld. I offer you half my kingdom, a throne next to mine and a crown made of darkness, just like mine.â
You stood in front of him, feeling very lost at that moment, but also very intrigued. The words that he uttered, you had never dared to even take them into your mouth, let alone speaking them out. âI-â You opened your mouth, but no refusal came out this time.Â
You wanted to reason with your mother and sister, but living here had made you realize that they were probably better off without you if they were going to get taken care of with gold to last generations. If you would ever get the chance to return to earth, you would need to get married to someone you probably loathed and lived a boring life as a housewife.
Then, you wanted to argue with the fact that you missed the sun, nature, flowers and everything earth offered to you. But did you really? On earth, flowers withered at the end of every summer, months of coldness dominating your part of the world for the majority of the year. You started to question whether you would have lived a fulfilling life if you had continued like this, only looking forward to spring and rotting away in boredom when the world got blanketed with snow, fighting for survival, year after year.
Here in the underworld, there were no such things as seasons. The darkness might have appeared threatening at the beginning, but you had slowly started to grow accustomed to the different lightning and the constant pleasant temperature. By now, you had also found beauty in the absolute darkness of the night and the sunset-like sky during daytime.Â
A conflict spread out inside of you that you had never imagined of ever leading. Had you already found your true fate back then on earth or have you always been destined for more in another world?Â
âYou only want me to stay because you feel lonely, thatâs why youâre offering me the throne,â was your feeble attempt of rejection. âBut Iâm not like you, Jaehyun. I cannot live this life here.â
âYou are very much like me, little rose,â Jaehyun corrected with a growing, new smile you couldnât define, and then reminded you, âDid you forget that destiny doesnât only mean endless torture? The little boy who you sent into the river of oblivion, he will get the chance to start a new life, leaving the one behind in which he only experienced sorrow and suffering. How did you feel at that moment? Didnât you feel helpful, relieved or even happy for him? Because thatâs what will also be required of you as the queen of the underworld. Youâre an executor and a savior both at the same time. Youâll be the most powerful queen to ever exist.â
âT-tell me,â you stuttered, ât-tell me the truth. That day⌠it might have been a coincidence that you were near me, but what made you choose me?â
It couldnât have been a coincidence only. There must be more to it. There must be a reason you were here now, a sign that this was your fate for which you had always been destined. It would give you the ultimate assurance, a reason less to doubt your entire existence.
âArenât you one sneaky little thing, my rose? I wanted to tell you that day already, but you werenât ready to hear.â Jaehyun stretched out his hand and let the tip of his index finger run along your chin. You shuddered - in full pleasure so obvious, he must have felt it too. And he must have also felt your disappointment when he withdrew his hand again. âBefore you appeared here⌠I mean, before I stole you - pardon me - I was very lonely. So I asked for one day on earth to search for a fitting wife as I havenât found one among my own kind. But who I got drawn to, precisely by their sugary scent that even overshadowed the flowers and morning dew wrapped pollen on the fingers, wasnât a timid daisy in a bed full of asters. It was a rose itself who harbored thorns, and I believe, deep within, I knew all along that I finally found someone not only fit to warm my bed, but to reign alongside me. Seldomly have I met someone so strong-willed and fierce like you, lest a mortal. If you decide against the crown of immortal flowers that I offer you, it will be really unfortunate for me as I paid a huge price for getting you.â
You gulped. â...Which price?âÂ
âI will never be allowed on earth again.â
You understood why he wanted a companion as you couldnât imagine living at such a huge place all by yourself either. The corridors were long, dark and branched, servants strictly following their duties and always keeping their distance to their master despite him treating them respectfully. Then, there were the endless rolling plains with nothing but dust and nightmarish creatures. The darkness from the underworld must have taken over his heart a long time ago as well, and he was looking for a glimmer of light.
You just werenât sure whether you were the right one. He hadnât been able to give you the entire reassurance you still needed.
âThatâs unfortunate,â you brought yourself to say eventually. âBut I canât.â
A strand of your hair got lifted up, and he twirled it around his finger, observing it closely and seemingly enjoying the softness that curled around his skin. You had never seen him so at your mercy and apologetic before. âI only had one chance that would define my own destiny which will last an eternity. If I made the wrong choice in selecting you, I am deeply sorry. If there was more that I could tell you, I would. But there isnât. You were there, and I wanted you. Why donât you want me too, little rose?â
Your breathing came in hitches. âWhat would that make me, Jaehyun?â
Leaving your family behind to live in sin here in the underworld. It would make you an outcast, someone expelled from society, someone with no dignity. But then again, when had you ever been someone who was worth more on earth? Werenât you exactly where you were supposed to be, where darkness reigned like the one which occupied your heart ever since that fateful day a century ago?
Jaehyunâs hand was now on the side of your face, and you fought the urge to nestle against his palm. You relished the feeling the tip of his thumb made when he brushed it over your cheek though, and you wanted more of it, all over your body precisely. You just knew it would be entirely different than what you had experienced with mortal men before. But then again - what would that make you?
âIt would make you a human,â Jaehyun calmed you, his expression smoothening despite the obvious threat on his throat. âJust like you are. Donât you ever forget that. You are allowed to accept every part of you, to feel everything youâre harboring.â
âBut itâs just⌠so hard,â you whispered, unsure what he was even talking about anymore, you being queen or the possibility of you two sharing more than the throne, but also a bed.
âYou are a constellation, waiting to be explored and loved. Did any man who ever tried to court you understand that you were so much more than a maiden hidden away in her houseâs backyard? Because I understand.âÂ
There was something glittering in his eyes despite stars being absent here. You opened your lips and closed them again, fighting so hard against the need of wanting them to taste his.Â
âYou fought so bravely against it. You can allow yourself to finally let go, little rose,â Jaehyun encouraged you with a low whisper. Again, you were questioning whether he actually meant the darkness in your heart or the need of his lips covering yours.
âI-I-...â You let out a long breath that you had been holding in this entire time and took a step back, away from him and from his alluring appearance. âIâm tired. I will return to my chambers.â
You almost stumbled over your own feet running to your chamber, setting one hasty foot after another. When you reached your room, you locked the door behind you as though you were afraid he might follow you and barge in.
As you laid in your bed shortly later, you caught yourself wishing he had done so. And you also caught yourself having naturally addressed him by his name somewhere along the way.
Like he wasn't a distant god or master anymore. But an equal.
____
âDo humans live with you?â you asked Taeyong the next day after encountering him in the garden, joking around with the servants.Â
Apparently, he had had a few duties close by and decided to pay the dark palace a visit. As it came to your attention through him a short while ago, Jaehyunâs palace was described as such by outsiders.Â
Taeyong laughed, but the smile that he forced himself to wear meanwhile wasnât sincere. âNo, I donât support this kind of lifestyle.â
âWhy? Donât get me wrong, Iâm on your side, but why does your opinion differ from the other gods?â
âThe woman I love is a human, what would that make me, abusing her own kind?â
The pain in his voice couldnât be ignored, it was too obvious, intended or unintended. But it was not the kind of pain a rejected lover would express. âSo youâre in love with a mortal, I see.â
âNot just a mortal, a human,â he corrected. âWe gods are all immortal, but there are other creatures such as sprites who are also otherworldly, but can indeed die, so theyâre mortal. Some humans here have also gained immortality. Mortals and humans are not the same term.â
He confirmed what you had suspected all along. Finally, you understood why Jaehyun had always spoken about humans only and not about mortals when addressing your kind. It was because in the dark palace, he was the only immortal one.Â
âI understand. Then⌠tell me about her, Taeyong. What makes you so sad about her?â
âThe fact that I donât want to love her, and she doesnât want me to love her either, but I would even give up on my immortality just to be with her. I would instantly go and trade my immortality despite a god never having done that before, and I donât even know whether itâs possible, but if, I would in a heartbeat.â
The way he spoke about her, soft and passionate, reminded you of the way Jaehyun spoke to you lately, and suddenly yearning tugged on your heartstring, even though he was only a few yards away from you inside the palace.
âIt must be a huge sacrifice for a god to be willing to give up their immortality for a human. It sounds like you sincerely love her.â
âI donât love her sincerely,â Taeyong continued bluntly, shocking you. But a tinge of the same yearning resonated in his tone too, so you were truly confused about his contradicting reaction. âItâs not the kind of love I wish upon anyone. I havenât chosen her, but every fiber of my heart longs for her love. One day, it will tear me entirely apart. It will be the day she dies.â
You frowned. âI donât think I understandâŚâ
âIâm cursed by the god of love. Ironic, isnât it?â He let out a laugh, but it didnât sound amused at all, bitter even. âIâm cursed to love her until the end of days, and sheâs cursed to not reciprocate it.â
It sounded so sad and unfortunate to you, you didnât quite know what to say. âIâm so sorry.â You couldnât imagine how painful it must be to feel and live like this. And what would happen if she died one day? Would he continue loving her and longing for her when all traces of her had evaporated, for all eternity? You repeated, this time much more sensitively, âIâm so sorry, Taeyong.â
âNow, donât look so sad, there is nothing to be sad about,â Taeyong tried to cheer you up. âI have arranged myself to live like this. Thatâs why I think youâre very lucky.â
âMe?â You pointed at yourself. âWhy should I be?â
âBecause humans still know what true love is. They can decide on who to be with, who to open their hearts to, who to let in. Most gods solemnly seek for the comfort of a warm body next to them at any given time, or marry only out of convenience. Some gods are cursed, just like me, some even happen to face a worse fate. Only the minority donât seek for a puppet or an arrangement, but a real partner. Like Jaehyun.â
You sneered. âAccording to everyone else, heâs one of the most powerful gods in your entire realm. Why would he care for a real partner, a human even?â
âYou donât know him very well, do you? He might have only searched for a timid wife to sit next to him in the throne hall and perhaps show him a bit of affection. But that would have never been enough for him, and he always knew, otherwise he would have picked the first human he saw.â
âAll Iâm saying is,â you defended your opinion, âI might not be the right person for whatever he requires of me.â
Taeyong shrugged, but not with an indifferent intention. âYou might be the exact right person for this as he doesnât require anything from you except for you just to be you.â
âWhy would you say that?â you sighed, distressed.
âJaehyun traded his permission to be allowed on earth to find you. It was risky and stupid, I can admit that, but at least he went after what he had been searching for this entire time. It impresses me very much. Doesnât it impress you too?â
âThatâs not a good enough reason. He only had one shot,â you tried to understand. âAnd he picked me. What if he chose wrong?â
âThat is your perception.â Taeyong smiled, no trace of sadness anymore. âMine is that he was a lonely man looking at a million women in the span of half a day. And he didnât need to look at a million other women and take the remaining hours to settle with the last possible option out of pure panic, because he ran out of time. He went for what caught his eye, felt right to him and gave him hope. Isnât that a good enough reason?â
You fell into silence.Â
âAh, I must go now. But just let me tell you this one last thing.â You raised your brows in expectation, watching Taeyong shift around and seamlessly continuing without looking back, âJaehyun is the god of the underworld. Never has he made a wrong decision.â
You wished you didnât believe him.
____
Jaehyun probably knew it the moment you walked into the great hall that day. He probably saw it in the nervous flickers of your eyes, he probably smelled it in the light sheen of sweat glistening around your cleavage, probably heard it in the ragged breaths of your lungs.Â
You had come to kill him.Â
But he didnât say a single word.
Your walk wasnât as determined and full of confidence as usual, the steps barely heard as though you might change your mind every second. The silver blade was glistening between your fingers and then slipped up your sleeve again in hope he hadnât seen.
âDid you think about my offer, little rose?â Jaehyun asked almost nonchalantly as he moved on his throne, but didnât descend.Â
Today, he was wearing his dark crown at home again. Ironically, on his death day too, you thought silently to yourself. âYes,â you announced and let your head drop when you stood in front of him. âI canât.â
âAnd why is it that you think that you canât? Youâre a human, someone with a free will. We gods donât have that.â
âItâs because I have a free will that I decide against your offer.â
âVery well. I accept that.â He let out a long sigh that didnât sound in the least bit agitated though. âIf you ever change your mind while youâre still here, I am willing to get back to my offer.â
âIâm afraid there is not enough time.â
Then you lashed out, and the next moment, he had a knife to his throat, blood spilling where the blade cut into his skin. It was only lightly, but enough to tear apart even the sheerest of paper. You didnât dare to push deeper, your trembling fingers clinging onto the handle when you settled on his lap with your legs locking him in place on either side.
âWhy donât you stab me?â Jaehyun whispered, not moving a single inch.
You were aware he couldnât die, not from your mortal hands. This action was your feeble attempt and last resort of holding onto something you should have left behind the moment you had stepped into the darkness: humanity. If you stabbed him, you wouldnât feel the same as with your father back then. If you stabbed him, you would feel remorse, and that would remind you that you were still all that - a human.
You ground your teeth, breathing irregularly while having difficulties remaining the knife in its position. Jaehyun was still sitting quietly beneath you, looking up at you with expectant eyes that didnât mirror anything like reproach or anger. He knew you wouldnât do that, he knew that exactly, and that fueled your despair even more, because, in the end, you had known all along too.
âYou can defy everything, little rose, even me,â Jaehyun muttered, stretching out his hand that then touched a strand of your hair and gently tucked it behind your ear. âBut the truth is that you want me, and this life. And itâs killing you. Not me.â
You had never wanted to be anything less than extraordinary, but no one had ever told you that you could possibly be bound for so much greater either. Restless in your own world, you had tended flowers day for day, wondering if there was more to life than the one you were living. You had always been subconsciously rattling on the invisible chains of simplicity, boredom and too much comfort, struggling to let go fully.
And now he, the god of the underworld himself, was pressed into the throne in front of you, not fighting back under the threat of your knife, even though he was able to unalive you with only the flick of his finger. He was patiently waiting for your decision, had seen and fostered your potential from the very beginning.
You werenât a timid little flower in the backyard anymore.Â
You were the dangerous seeds of pomegranates.Â
âTell me, little rose, will you accept even the darkest parts of you like I do?â
A few beats of silence passed by where Jaehyun only heard your rattled breathing going hand in hand with the erratic rhythm of your chest heaving up and down, until the knife dropped to the dais with a loud noise. His fingers grazed over your scalp, settling there shortly before they grabbed a bundle of hair, preparing to haul you to him.
But he didnât need to. Willingly, you leaned down, stopping right before your lips touched his, wavering in that moment a little too long. Jaehyunâs fingers slipped from the back of your head past your ear, touching your cheek. He was so close, you could feel his breath stroking your chin as his finger tips slid further, trailing over your bottom lip.
Your eye contact was so strong and more intense unlike anything you had ever experienced before. He was exploring the deepest parts of your soul with his gaze only, making you wonder how much longer it would take Jaehyun to unravel all of you without even having touched you more intimately.
Instinctively, you parted your lips, and he slipped his thumb past them. With the tip of your tongue, you licked over his skin, then started sucking on his finger. This gesture had something so tainted yet intimate to it, you feared that he might withdraw right away, but the look in his eyes and his own slightly agape mouth only reassured you of the fact that he found it as seductive as you.Â
But Jaehyun was still awaiting your answer before it was processed. You were sure though that whatever would start to happen next, it would be world-destructive in so many senses. You only hoped you would be prepared for it.
You sucked in a huge breather and Jaehyun retracted his hand from your mouth as he assumed you wanted to say something. There was much expectation lying behind his awaiting eyes, even though you both knew by now what your answer would be.
âBeg.â
Jaehyun cocked a brow. âPardon?â
âBeg for it.â
You could clearly see the struggle in his eyes, and even a touch of indignation, but as he saw how serious you were about it, he apparently swallowed all his pride.
âPlease,â he growled lowly. âBe my queen.â
âYou donât have to be alone anymore,â you finally whispered as you hovered above him with not much resistance.
At this moment, you laid bare in front of him, with your soul and mind at his mercy, and he could do anything he wanted with it.Â
But he didnât.Â
Instead, Jaehyun let you come forward and close the last remaining space between the two of you as you pressed your lips against his, reassuring him of your wordsâ honesty. You had made your decision, and you were willing to take everything that came along with it - including the god of the underworld himself.
Suddenly, Jaehyun gasped in shock when he tasted something familiar on your tongue.Â
There it was.
Pulling away, he snatched your hand, spotting red stains on the tips of your fingers and whispering breathlessly, âPomegranate seeds.â And then louder, âYou ate pomegranate seeds!â
You clarified, âSeven of them, to be exact.â
By the way he examined your lips and licked over his own, he must by now also spot and taste the red seeds on your own mouth that had passed by him before.Â
"You deceived me,â Jaehyun realized. âYou never needed me to beg for you to be queen.â
âI needed to be sure you truly meant it,â you disclosed the truth to him. âWhether you would be able to lay your title aside for me and open up to me about what you truly want, as a man and not as a king. Whether you would see me as an equal.â
He hesitated. âWhat if I had said no?â
One edge of your mouth curved upwards. âFrom the very beginning, I knew you wouldnât.â
âHow lucky you are, as a queen isnât to be opposed,â he then said with a smirk, âsheâs to be obeyed and worshiped.â
When your lips came together again and his hands grabbed hard on the tender flesh of your buttocks, you were both aware that you had never needed to be convinced to stay with him in the first place.
_____
Jaehyunâs hands werenât on your face anymore as his mouth gave you all the attention you needed there, lips and tongue deep inside you. Instead, you felt his palms pressing into your exposed thighs after he had successfully and nearly imperceptibly pulled your skirts up, skin grazing against skin, his touch causing you to shudder with craving so unfathomable, you believed you were going to burst. This time, from bliss only.
His tongue outlined the form of your lips, your mouth then again melting into the kiss you two were sharing, so passionate and full of yearning as though you had been waiting a lifetime for only this moment. In both of your cases, it was applicable - the god of the underworld who had been alone all along, and a mortal girl who was bound for so much more than a simple life on earth.
Your back arched into Jaehyunâs body when his hands wandered upwards and curled into the curve of your spine, his fingers dancing across the naked skin under all the fabric which hung flattery around your figure. Without breaking your kiss, you gripped onto the very first button of his black shirt and undid it, your hands stained with the blood of the wound that you had caused earlier.
Snapping back to reality, you bounced back with a gasp, inspecting Jaehyunâs neck that now looked surprisingly unscathed where your knife had once slid through, only the spilled blood remaining. âWha-â
âWe gods heal way faster than humans, because thatâs what we areâŚâ he explained patiently, âimmortal.â
That was something you hadnât put further thought into, but absolutely made sense considering that you technically couldnât kill him. Somehow, a bad conscience still seeped into you, so you said, âIâm sorryâ with much regret in your voice.Â
âDonât apologize, little rose,â was only his answer, adorned with a smile while his fingers fiddled with the collar around your cleavage. âYou did what you had to do. It was important to me that you weighed all your options and still decided to be with me.â
Jaehyun tugged on your sleeves, pulling the upper part of your dress all the way down. The fabric settled around your hips with loud rusting, and only now you noticed that he had grown distinctively hard between your thighs. It aroused you very much as well, a cool breeze caressing your breasts and making your nipples turn hard.Â
You had never carefully paid attention to what you considered flaws on your body, but the god sitting under you was incontrovertibly perfect and you, as a human, certainly didnât perceive yourself in the same way. There was nothing to hide your naked body behind in this short span of doubt, but your shoulders slacked nonetheless, especially in this dominant position, and he noticed.
Jaehyun lifted you off his lap with a surprised sound falling from your lips. Your thighs were locked around his hips and you held onto him while he descended from the throne and placed you with your back on the carpet in front of the dais. With your arms slung across your chest while now lying in front of him, you tried to hide from him what you considered unpleasant for his eyes. You had never had this problem during your fleeting intimate encounterings before.
âPlease donât be insecure,â Jaehyun spoke gently, looming over you. âYouâre so beautiful, I canât take my eyes off you.â
Oddly, you believed every single word and willingly freed your chest as your thoughts and worries started to leave your mind. His tongue flicked over your nipple and with a moan, you threw your head back against the carpet, your fingers buried in his thick hair which was free from a crown now, scratching his scalp when he decided to gently suck on your peaks in alternation. It made you grow hot and wet in your nether regions, and you started to ache with the need for release.
You whined when Jaehyun suddenly withdrew, but let out a yelp when he grabbed your thighs, yanking you towards him and burying his face between your legs under the many layers of your skirts. His tongue indulged you, making hard passes over your folds before flicking your clit over and over. You hadnât known what to expect of a god, but literally devouring you kind of made sense now.
His tongue was long, wet and thick, and it slid over your exposed parts in delightful strokes, the groaning sounds Jaehyun made meanwhile vibrating through you and almost making you cum on spot if it werenât for him deciding to use his lips next. They felt full and warm on your wetness when he sucked on you, and you calmed down a bit, moving your body to the same sensual rhythm as his caressing mouth.Â
âYou taste better than the pomegranate seeds,â Jaehyun told you when he appeared by your face again, licking over his wet lips.Â
He wanted to prolong the act, but that didnât withhold him from having fun, so he started playing with you through his rough fingers rubbing soft circles around your clit while observing you with a satisfied grin. These fingers then moved past your barrier and started to thrust inside of you, causing you to fidget with your legs, wanting to get rid of the dress that you suddenly didnât see as a protection from your mortality anymore, but an annoyance.
Jaehyun, as though an expert in reading your needs now, helped you with that and dragged the entire dress down your legs, throwing it aside. You watched him then elegantly and calmly undressing himself too, and when he dropped on his knees in front of your spread legs, entirely naked, his appearance just took your breath away.
He was magnificent. And he had decided on you to make his queen. Out of all creatures, mortal and immortal, human and god, he had decided on you. Suddenly, you didnât see it as a punishment anymore, but a blessing. You were so lucky.
Jaehyun positioned himself between your thighs, slowly stroking his length against your entrance that was already slick with precum. You guessed everything that worked for humans worked for gods too. And that also included pain as you hadnât had sex in so long already.
There was indeed a pang as he pushed himself inside, but it lasted only the break of a second that he luckily didnât catch before it melted into pleasure, and it was the kind of pleasure you hadnât been able to ever fathom before. It felt like something fell into place, like finding something that you had grasp seeking for all your lifetime and had just now discovered.
The way he slid his length in, slowly, inch by agonizing inch, was what you would describe as pure bliss, the most decadent, indulgent pleasure you had ever felt. You reached down and grabbed his bum, pulling him into you so that he sank even deeper if that were even possible as he had already hit the brim.
âAlready so insatiable, little rose?â Jaehyun groaned with an underlying chuckle, propping his hands against the carpet on either side of you. âOr should I call you âmy queenâ from now on?âÂ
He wasnât even expecting an answer as he knew your clear response to it. His first thrust then inside of you was already so powerful, it nearly knocked the air out of your lungs.Â
You werenât his captive, nor his prisoner. He had never seen you as such. You were soon to be the queen by his side, his equal. Yet, all you wanted was him to fuck you senseless, devour you, ravage you, and worse. And you had the feeling that the god of the underworld wouldnât mind doing all that as the sinister grin on his lips slightly gave away while you whispered almost absent-mindedly,
âMore, more!â
Your fingers curled around the rug beneath you whenever he pulled back, his muscles straining and drawing in a deep breath before he slammed right back into you, causing you to gasp loudly, the echo getting carried across the wide hall. You hadnât deemed it to be possible, but you swore that with every thrust, he drove in even deeper. A cry strangled in your throat, your vision rolling back as you had difficulties keeping eye contact with him. Your naked bodies moved together in unison despite you having feared at first that you might have forgotten how this act worked.Â
For this being you twoâs first joining, you didnât feel inferior or controlled like in the past when you had used sex and everything forbidden only as a coping mechanism. Every noise you made, whether dry moaning or lustful cry, was because of pure pleasure, and Jaehyun always responded with a short pause where he looked you longingly in the eyes and halted his motions for a moment before starting off shallowly again as though he quite couldnât believe you were there. You couldnât either.
With each kiss, you felt adored. With each touch, you felt appreciated. With each thrust, you felt worshiped. It wasnât only about him, but about you too, regardless of your human nature.Â
Pleasure quickly started to build and grow within you, and you were afraid you were going to faint on the spot as Jaehyunâs rhythm changed and he picked up his pace. Your mortal body was supposedly too weak and too fragile to take everything he could give all at once despite you wanting to explore everything, all of it.Â
But you couldnât just yet, despite him clearly willing to give you all you needed, for as long as you wanted. If you continued, you feared you might really splinter and be impossible to put back together, dying right there in his arms, because the bliss was too much for a human to take in.
âPlease,â you were the one begging now, your hands coming forward and clutching around his toned arm muscles. âI canât anymore. I need to-â
âVery well, my queen.â
The new title was music to your ears, and the moment you saw stars exploding in front of your eyes, you also witnessed the sparkles merging and forging a crown made of darkness, just like his.
You were screaming and writhing under him, grabbing onto anything, something just to make sure that you would stay here and not fly off into another realm or worse, back to earth. But you were still with Jaehyun when you calmed down and his own orgasm ripped through him, the god of the underworld coming undone right above you.
His chest heaved as he tried to regain his breath, his toned body gleaming with sweat, but he still took his time to end your session with a kiss on your mouth that sealed the eternal proposal you had accepted.
âThis is the only time I wouldnât mind giving up power as a queen,â you reminded him as he pulled you to his chest, still there on the carpet. âDonât you forget that.â
âVery well, my queen.â
You couldnât see his face, but you felt his smile on you.
____
When you woke up the next morning, you only after a short while realized that you werenât in your own chambers. Warmth rose to your cheeks when you remembered what happened after you had threatened Jaehyun with a knife. And after that. And after that again. AndâŚ
Each joining had lasted longer than the one before, him giving more and you taking more, until your experience wasnât only earth-shattering, but also soul-rendering. Every session tightened the bond that had formed between the two of you even stronger, and you wondered how long it would take until it couldnât break anymore. Perhaps, it had never been destructible to begin with.
You blinked against the dim reddish light and got into a seating position before observing the room that was almost identical to yours, probably just a bit bigger, furnished fuller and more luxuriously.Â
âI figured you wanted to remain true to mortal customs.â
You hadnât spotted Jaehyun sitting on the edge of the bed, hair messy and body bare safe from a pair of satin bottoms. Again, you remembered that on earth, you had never seen a human so beautiful like him. You couldnât even bring yourself to believe there was.
âWhat do you mean?â you asked with a raspy voice, and he apparently found it endearing in the way he reacted to your question.
âI heard that on earth, after you propose marriage and the other person accepts, youâre engaged. Thatâs the time before the actual wedding, right? And that the woman is gifted a diamond ring. At least thatâs what Taeyong told me.â
âThatâs right,â you confirmed, but you had never seen a real diamond ring before. When people in your village got engaged, they usually bought a cheap ring or used an heirloom, but as you had never expected to get married, you had never put much thought into owning one yourself.
âI didnât know which kind of stone you liked and neither which kind of cut you preferred, let alone the color,â Jaehyun spelled out, insecurity swinging in his undertone. âI spent the entire rest of the night only deciding on that.â He slid closer to you along the mattress which let you spot the softness in his voice resonating in the look of his eyes. âAnd then I came to the conclusion that all of that doesnât matter. Trivial things like these donât matter to you. But⌠I still wanted to give the mortal girl I stole from her family a diamond ring. Simply because she deserves it.â
From the corner of your periphery, you spotted something glittering. When he opened his palm fully, a dainty silver ring got revealed to you, a black diamond sitting on the very top. Its shape reminded you of a blossoming flower, held together by silvery thorns that twined along the outline.Â
âItâs the shape of a rose,â Jaehyun explained, âcut of diamonds from deep inside the mountains where only the residing god has access to.â
A rose for his beloved little rose cut of stone in the same color as their hearts.
It was the most beautiful jewelry you had ever seen, one of those you usually only read about in fairytale books. Jaehyun reached out his hand and took yours into his, sliding the ring along the right finger until it sat perfectly where an engagement ring was supposed to be seen. You had never wanted to pay much attention to materialistic stuff, but as soon as you saw the diamond adorning your hand, you were flooded with so much pride and an overwhelming feeling of finally having found your place in this world that it drove tears into your eyes.
âDid⌠did I do something wrong?â Jaehyun suddenly sounded so worried and squeezed your fingers together, expressing his concern. âIsnât it what you wanted? We can change the diamond, the color, or if you donât want a ring at a-â
You shook your head. âItâs⌠itâs not that. The ring is perfect. This is perfect.â
âWhat is it then?âÂ
Pause. âI donât want to be your queen.â
He let go of your hand, his forehead now in creases. âSo, you donât want to get married to me anymore?â
âNo.â You shook your head. âI donât want to be your queen only.â
The frowns only deepened. âWhat are you saying?â
âAt the beginning, you wanted me as your wife, but I refused. Later on, you said you were looking for a queen. I only accepted to be a queen, not a wife.â
âThat is correct.â
âAsk me again.â
âWhat?â
You chuckled. âAsk me again.â
Jaehyun needed a moment to process, but then his eyes started to sparkle when it dawned on him what you were trying to ask of him. He then took your hand with the engagement ring back into his and held your fingers in front of his chest, the black rose diamond sparkling in the candlelight.Â
âWill you marry me? Will you become my wife, loved and cherished every single day, and also become my queen, reigning over the underworld with me?â
Loved and cherished? You had never heard someone speaking these words in the same breath and directing them at you. And now you had the king of the underworld offering you more than you had ever thought possible on earth. He sealed his proposal with a kiss that he gently placed on the top of your knuckles, right by the diamond.
You let your fingers slip out of his palm and shifted your arm to sling them both around his neck. With a careful movement, you motioned in his direction, his hands on your waist guiding you until you settled on his lap, eye to eye with him.
âWill you love and cherish me always?â With your thumbs, you tenderly brushed over the back of his neck. âWhatever will happen?â
âI will always love and cherish my wife and queen,â he replied. âSo please, marry me. And this is the only time I will ever beg again outside of the bedroom.â
He knew that you had always been meant for more than a silly, fragile doll of earth. And maybe, your family provided acceptance to the same extent, but you wanted pomegranates and death, and you craved the cruel shadows of the night. He saw more in you than a corrupted child of light, he saw a queen worthy of reigning alongside him. And you would gladly let him believe so.
âYes,â you whispered before you leaned into his lips. âI will.â
The kiss was chaste and innocent, a stark contrast to the previous night, sealing a proposal you had never dreamed of receiving. To be loved and cherished until all eternity⌠you thought, despite the equal darkness in your heart, you could give all of this to him too. And eternity by his side didnât sound so excruciating anymore.
âWhat is it?â Jaehyun halted in the middle of the kiss to look directly at you, his palms steadying either side of your face. âIs something wrong?â
You shook your head, taken aback by a warm feeling that suddenly spread from your lower stomach to the very tips of every limp. âNothing.â Your fingers massaged the back of his head, his soft hair slipping through the gaps between them. âWhen are we getting married?â
âSo impatient already?â He narrowed his eyes and tilted the corners of his lips up to an evil grin. âIf you want to repeat last night, all you have to do is ask, anytime you want, anywhere you want.â
âAs promising as it sounds⌠Iâm serious,â you assured him. âWhen can we get married?â
âI stand by my answer, anytime you want.â
âThen tomorrow?â
âAs you wish, my wife.â
____
You married the god of the underworld on a day when the sky was exceptionally red. Or so it seemed to you as your lips had been painted in the same promising color that resembled the dangerous pomegranate seeds as well.
You stood in a tiny, open chapel forged of stone in the middle of the mountains you always watched from Jaehyunâs chamberâs window where you had resided the past nights. Donned in black garments of the finest fabrics instead of pastels, you were facing and holding each otherâs hands, the priestess in a white tunic and veil that barely revealed her face reading from a book to you that you had never seen in churches on earth.Â
You didnât have witnesses, there were no family members or friends to celebrate this special day with you. Under these circumstances, it would have been the saddest day in a young womanâs life. But not for you. Of course you wished your mother and sister could have been here too to share these feelings with you, but they also wouldnât have understood.
Why you did this. Why you needed to do this.
âI do,â you heard Jaehyun say first.
This was where you belonged. At the end of the day, you had still found your way into the arms of the darkest god in the entire realms.
âI do,â you repeated after the priestess, barely a whisper, but still strong enough to be carried by the breeze to everyoneâs ear.
You met Jaehyunâs confident smile, and you only now grasped the fact that you barely remembered the last time you had been happy to this extent back there on earth. It had been a long, long time.
When your lips closed around your husbandâs, marking his mouth with stains of the same redness as the sky and the pomegranates that bound you to this place, you claimed him as yours just like he claimed you as his.
Two equals from different breeds, but from now on of the same value under this red sky.
____
âCongratulations on your wedding. I was a bit sad that I wasn't invited.â
âNobody was invited, Taeyong,â Jaehyun sighed. âWhy did you come here anyway?â
âI have a message for your wife.â The sun god jumped down the stairs until he stood in front of you both, but only eyeing you. âTalk about timing, you have just gotten married and I will have to separate you again.â
âWhat do you mean?â You frowned, suddenly very wary.
âI have a message for you from the god of the sea. Since he was banned by your now husband from ever entering the underworld again and your husband was banned from entering the sea too, he sent me as a messenger.â
That statement didnât only cause you to freeze, but Jaehyun as well. âWhat does he want from her?â
The few things you had heard about the sea god so far hadnât been really pleasant. What could he possibly want from you?
âHe has been reached out to by someone who wants to get you back,â Taeyong declared carefully.
You shook your head. Thatâs impossible. No one from my family can come and there is no other person who would care enough for me to do that.â
âWhy would that be the case?â Taeyong asked.
âHer mother is limping gravely and her sister is still a child. She doesnât have other living relatives,â Jaehyun reasoned for you.
You were grateful for his support as you were having struggles digesting Taeyongâs information, having the fact pass by you that you had never actually told Jaehyun anything about your family yourself by then.
âWell, someone is there who you matter very much to. And they want to take you back with them. A distant relative? A friend?â
âIt must be my mother or sister. It must.â You were petrified while two pairs of eyes laid on you, both gods lost for words too.
The tears that spilled from your eyes shortly later werenât tears of happiness or relief. They were tears of guilt, because you felt neither. You couldnât move but shook with your whole body against your will at the same time. What eventually settled in your stomach was the feeling of disappointment.
Disappointment, because whoever had come they had succeeded in that task - all to no avail.
Taeyong touched your back in a comforting gesture. âIâll accompany you.â
âNo,â Jaehyun cut in and took you into an embrace in which you couldnât stop trembling too, even though you werenât cold. âLet her digest that information first, and then weâll figure out what to do.â
Despite the stream of tears that clouded your vision, you still brought yourself to shake your head. âN-no,â you sobbed. âI-I will go now. I have to go n-now.â
âThe horse is already saddled,â Taeyong supported you. âDonât worry, I will safely escort her and bring her back to you, Jaehyun, you have my word.â
âYou want to do it now?â your husband asked you carefully, eyes full of worry.
You nodded determinedly, voice steadier now. âYes. They came all the way here, I owe them. Whatever they risked, I owe them. I cannot let another minute go reactionless to waste.â
âI understand.â
Not much later, you had hurried to your own room, Ara helping you peel out of your wedding dress and changing into a comfortable, dark gown, more suited for riding and traveling. You didnât want to lose much time as Taeyong was already waiting outside, so you hastened along with the servant until your husband stepped into the room right before you were about to leave again.
âYouâre dismissed, Ara,â Jaehyun said and she nodded, quietly departing and shutting the door behind her.
âWhatâs he like?â you asked dryly, tears now having entirely subsided, but fear only growing. âThe god of the sea, I mean.â
Your husband turned mute for a bit too long before he replied discreetly, yet clearly enough with much pain in his voice, âI wish you wouldnât have to go.â
âI must.â
âI know. Itâs just so unfortunate it happened on our wedding day.â
You felt his breath hitting the parting of your hair when he stood close to you and eventually hugged again which you instinctively reciprocated. You didnât want to leave him either - but, again, you must. If only he could come with you, you would feel safer and more protected. Even though Taeyong offered probably the same amount of comfort, it would have been something entirely else to have your own husband by your side.
âRemember, youâre the queen of the underworld now,â Jaehyun whispered into your ear. âHe doesnât stand a chance against you. By title alone, youâre mightier than him.â
âIâm still a human and mortal after all,â you expressed your worry and buried your face in his chest, fingers clutching hard into the fabric of his shirt. âHe could keep me captivated, blackmail you or just end me with one single grip of his hand. I donât stand a chance against him.â
âIf he dares to lay a finger on you,â Jaehyun continued with an underlying groan that indicated he was suppressing long planted anger, âI will have the permission to end him. I promise to you, if youâre not back by the day after tomorrow, I will tear every single realm apart just to find you and take you back with me.â
In the security of his embrace, you smiled, more at ease now. âIf he wonât let me go, I will fight my way back to you. Through every single realm.â
âThat is exactly what my queen and wife would say.â
The proudness in his voice made you proud too, and suddenly you werenât so scared anymore. The promises you had given to each other in the secrecy of your room was sealed with one last kiss that was dripping with longing over the lost wedding night before you got on Taeyongâs horse and rode off with him into the fallen darkness.
____
âSo, youâre the wife of the king of the underworld?âÂ
The man in front of you motioned his pupils up and down, inspecting you from head to toe. You couldnât pinpoint the look in his eyes, but it was everything except kindness that got mirrored in them. It was mostly mockery that bordered disgust even.
âIâm not only his wife, Iâm his queen and the queen of the underworld, so you will address me as such.â
He raised his dark brow that was of the same color as his hair - petrol blue. In comparison to your husband, the king, he was a bit shorter and of a more slender figure, his aura far more sinister, nothing that would draw you to him like what had drawn you to your husband at the very beginning.
âVery well, human queen.â He grinned, his grin sharp and his smile crooked. âDoes your oblivious husband know you killed your own father and only accepted his marriage proposal to get spared from the torture fields?â
Your blood froze.
âI see, thatâs enough of an answer. When I heard your father went away a decade ago, but I couldnât track him down, I found it very suspicious, so I did a background check on you. What came to light truly fascinated me.â He put his index finger on his chin. âYou and the god of the underworld are so similar. That you accepted his marriage proposal solely for that purpose, I only guessed. But I know you stupid, greedy humans. Youâre all the same. In comparison to you, your sister is very talkative though as she had come all the way down here by herself.â
Your jaw dropped. âMy⌠sister?â You were conflicted about what to do first as you did everything at once, gasping, breathing and talking simultaneously. âMy sister is here? Alone? My sister can't be here, sheâs practically still a child!â
âSheâs very mature for her age,â the sea god explained, partially smugly, partially matter-of-factly. âShe reached out to me herself through a summoner that she had tracked down in a nearby village and even offered her life, wanted me to trade hers for yours. Unfortunately, that was when I found out you ate our food already. What a pity.â He let out a long sigh and touched his forehead as though annoyed in a phony manner. âAnd now that youâre even queen of the underworld, Iâm not allowed to go through with my plans.â When he fixed his gaze back on you, his expression had some kind of madness to it that caused goose bumps to appear all over your body, and not the pleasant ones. âBut that doesnât mean that I cannot still have a bit of fun. Letâs see how much you both love each other.â
The undersea palace was equally impressive as the dark palace, the entire building forged of corals of different colors, lightning coming from the sun that was still able to make its way through the entire oceanâs depth until the last rays reached down here. It seemed like a lively and vibrant place with the residents also breathing air as water was kept outside, many mortals roaming around in colorful attires that reminded you of another part of the earth. The palace was like an own world in the middle of the undersea, but it was exactly this colorful and lively world that you would make the worst memory with.
The sea god suddenly spread out his arms like wings. Behind him, where a mass of deep blue curtain had adorned the back wall of the throne hall until now, a glass window revealed itself when the thick fabric parted, presenting the foggish undersea through a hole as big as a humanâs house. The view was striking and intimidating at the same time, and you would have appreciated the sight for a bit longer if it werenât for your sister who you found swimming like a fish in an aquarium behind the glass, a tiny dot on a huge painting.Â
Her long hair was floating around her head like a halo, her skirts spread like a summer breeze had lifted them up, and it would all have been a heavenly painting with the fishes swimming across the picture if it werenât for the look of horror in her eyes that she directed at you from the moment the curtains parted.
âI heard,â the sea god pulled you out of your petrifying realizations, âhumans can only live approximately three minutes without air. How long will your sister make it? I think sheâs already been in there for more than a minute.â
You panicked, and for a few heartbeats, you had to deal with a blackout about how to proceed, how to save your sister. Luckily, rationality kicked back in and you acted on implementing your first idea. The sea god watched you running around while continuously wearing his mocking smirk, heading into different directions in search of something that could break the glass.
You heard him laugh, his petrol blue strands shaking in the same rhythm as his dancing shoulders when you took a chair into your hands and dragged it to the massive glass window behind the dais. You were of a natural build, but that didnât mean you were weak for a woman. Years of working on the fields finally paid off when you heaved the chair up and slammed it against the glass, over and over again.
The more often the chair came in contact with the surface, the weaker your arms and the bigger your panic grew as time passed uncontrollably and you knew that soon, it would be too late.
âItâs not human glass. A chair cannot break it. It was amusing watching you though, but now it gets boring,â the sea god snickered and yawned. âHumans⌠such imbeciles.â
You hadnât noticed how tears started streaming down your face, hot and wet, until you desperately laid your palms against the glass, trying to make out your sisterâs body. But at this point, she had already floated so far away, you could barely spot her anymore, perhaps mainly also because of your tear-smeared vision.
You sank onto your knees, hands sliding down the glass as you felt hope shrinking the further you lowered your position, until you were a crying mess on the ground. Your sister would now die and it was entirely your fault - because you were so selfish and only thought about saving yourself. Just like back then with your father.
But suddenly, your hiccups stopped in unison with your tears when you felt something prick against your right thigh, and you gasped when a fact dawned on you: There was still hope. Before you had ridden off, Jaehyun had strapped an item around your leg that you had shortly forgotten about.
A knife.
âTake this with you,â your husband had said. âItâs made from the strongest material to ever exist, in this and the human world. It cannot kill an immortal, but it can break through every surface imaginable.â
Like he had seen coming, because he had been in a feud with the sea god for a long time already. Like he had wanted to prepare you for every possible situation that could occur.Â
The moment the glass broke with only a single strike of you and water mercilessly swamped into the hall, you just thought about how much you loved your husband and that it was only thanks to him that you were now able to hold your sister in your arms again - breathing and alive.
And that you hadnât killed another family member and would never need to again.
____
Your little sister was shivering in your arms, but you tried your best to keep her warm with your coat while you were wearing Taeyongâs as you were equally cold after the throne hall in the undersea palace had been entirely swamped.
âIâm tired,â your sister yawned.
It had been an almost impossible battle to get her out of there with the sea god going on a rampage after you broke the glass, and without Taeyongâs help, it wouldnât have been successful at all, but here you were now, both exhausted and injured, but alive. That was all that mattered.
âNot long anymore,â you assured her.
Not long anymore and you would be back at the dark palace. It had only been two days, but the further you approached the location, the more your anticipation grew to finally see your husband again. You hadnât been aware of how much you actually missed and longed for him until the moment you felt him by your side when you saved your sister - with his help.
âWhere are we going, sis?â
Taeyong was controlling the horse from the back while you and your sister were seated in front of him. You slung your arms tighter around her before you answered,
âMy home.â
âBut your home is with me,â she protested weakly before dozing off again, and you couldnât bring yourself to tell her the truth just yet.
âShe can also live here, you know,â Taeyong told you quietly from behind. âIf Jaehyun breaks the bargain she made with the sea god, she will be able to stay.â
âHer heart is not as dark as mine, her past not as tarnished, her future not as corrupted. She doesnât belong here,â you defended her. âIâm darkness and sheâs light. She belongs to where flowers grow, where spring returns and where she can see the sun rise every day.â
âYouâre also everything that she is, do you know that?â
âYou heard the sea god talking about my background. I donât have an excuse for the things that I did to our father. If I donât belong to the torture fields, who does?â
âYour father,â was Taeyongâs matter-of-fact reply.Â
You added, âAnd I would have to follow him.â
âThat is not true,â he disagreed. âIâm not Jaehyun, but Iâm positive that this is not true. He wouldnât have sent you to the torture fields if you had died one day on earth as a human. I know your entire story now, and he wouldnât have done that.â
âEven if that were possibleâŚâ you smiled sadly into the slowly falling night, âhow would my husband react if he knew that I had initially agreed to this marriage just to avert my possible destiny?â
âYou only wanted to do what you had to do in order to survive. Thatâs normal. Thatâs not even human only, thatâs instinct we all carry within us.â
âI donât want him to send me away,â you admitted, voice cracking and making way for tears that threatened to spill behind your eyes. âI donât want to leave. I want to stay here and only because of him, not because of my position or my title.â
With your front teeth sinking into your bottom lip and nearly making it bleed, you held yourself back from crying the nth time today.Â
âSounds like you married him for other reasons as well,â Taeyong concluded with a lighter tone in his voice. âIn the end, isnât that all that matters now?â
âI donât want him to regret choosing me,â you added hesitantly, stroking your sisterâs damp hair as the fist spires of the dark palace came into sight, even in the settling darkness.
âJaehyun has been the god of the underworld for an eternity already. As I said, never has he ever made a wrong decision. He has risked everything to get you. All you have to be is as courageous and confident as him, and believe in your love.â
LoveâŚ?Â
Was it even possible to love someone you didnât entirely know?
The last part of the way was covered in silence, and you expected your husband to be already asleep by now as night had long fallen. But you were able to make out the shape of his body even from miles afar. He stood in front of the gate as though he had known exactly when you would return - or had been standing there the past two days and nights.
You didnât even have to ride all the way to the gates. Jaehyun came running in your direction, his crown falling off his head while sprinting, but he didnât seem to care about that.Â
âMy wife,â he greeted you when you slid from the horse and into his arms, welcomed back into the darkness to where you belonged, but that suddenly didnât feel so cold and threatening anymore. It felt warm. Just like home.Â
Not âlittle roseâ, not âmy queenâ.Â
But âmy wifeâ you were now.
You couldnât lie to him any longer.
____
You gazed at your husband who was sleeping soundly next to you. Even though night had not given way to daytime yet, you couldnât sleep anymore, too many thoughts keeping you restless and awake.Â
Upon your return, you and your sister had been examined by a physician, but to your both luck, you had escaped with only minor injuries such as scratches from the broken glass. Yet, you had demanded for her to be observed the entire night. Initially, you had wanted to stay by her side yourself, but the physician had required absolute quietness and bedrest for her as she would sleep for many more hours, so you had decided to stay by Jaehyunâs side in the meantime.
For what seemed like hours, you had talked. And reliving the entire story in your tellings had you crying in your husbandâs arms once again, partly because of the horror, partly because of the relief that you had been able to save your sister.
âShe cannot stay here for long,â Jaehyun had made clear after comforting you until all your tears had subsided. âPart of her bargain was giving up one year of her life for every day she stays in the godly realms, so she has to recover fast and hurry home.â
How were you supposed to tell him that this wasnât the only thing you were worried about? Now that your sister was here to take you back, but with you having already eaten the pomegranate seeds, you didnât have a choice anymore. Deep inside, you deemed yourself lucky that you didnât even have to make one in the first place afterwards.
Because that would mean that you would have had to hurt someone consciously. And it wouldnât have been your husband.
Which was why you had decided to come clean with him now.Â
You were sitting next to him, stretching out your hand and gently tracing the outline of his jaw. He was so ethereally beautiful, it nearly made your breath catch again. But that wasnât the reason why you wanted to stay by his side forever.Â
It was because, after living a quarter of a human lifetime, you had finally found the place where you belonged. You had found your counterpart, your partner for eternity, your equal, your twin flame. The one who accepted every edge of your soul, no matter how frayed it was. At least, out of all mortals and immortals, he was willing to.
But would he still be if he had explored every last part of the darkness inside of you?
âWhy did you stop?â
You hadnât noticed how you had halted your motions, your fingers coming to a stop right under Jaehyunâs bottom lip.Â
âGood morning,â you whispered with a smile, and he kissed the tip of your index finger.
âItâs long not morning yet.â He looked at you, but he wasnât mirroring your expression. âWhat are you so sad for?â
So, he had seen right through you already. You gulped. âI had a bad dream,â you said.Â
âTell me about it.â
âI dreamed that you left me.â
Jaehyun let out a light-hearted chuckle that was still hoarse from sleep. âWhy would I ever do that?â
âBecause I might not be the person you think I am. The more you get to know meâŚâ
But he didnât let you finish, which you gladly accepted, because you were unsure about how to end the sentence anyway. âIn my entire lifetime, I have never made one decision that I regretted, not even after an eternity. And youâre one of them.â
âI wish I could believe you.â
What your husband said next made you possibly love him even more. He didnât tell you the usual phrases that any man would tell their wives in order to silence them for they got too annoyed. Instead, he said,Â
âYouâre the queen of the underworld now. You have to believe in yourself first.â
You couldnât bring yourself to tell him that in your own words how much you have come to love him though. Instead, you bent down to him and covered his mouth with yours in a passionate kiss.
âYou know, we were never able to celebrate our wedding night.â
âYou mean what happened in the hallway earlier didnât count?â he wondered with feigned innocence as though he hadnât been the one ripping your clothes apart the moment you were finally alone and hastily took you on the stairs right there and then.
You tugged on the hem of your nightgown, sliding the thin fabric over your head and simultaneously motioning towards Jaehyun until you were sitting naked on his lap. âThat was your present for me. Hereâs my present for you.â
The way your husband moaned into your ear when you were hovering over him shortly later, your hips coming down on his in a steady rhythm and your nipples grazing over his muscular chest, made you wonder if this was the last time that you would be able to hear him utter sounds like this.Â
You were bouncing up and down the mattress, knees already strained as you leaned backwards and braced yourself against his shins with your hands, arching your spine in such a way to give him full access to your whole body.
And he did worship it, every single inch, every part you considered a human flaw. His hands trailed upwards, stopping by your breasts and kneading them gently as he met your hip motions with thrusts that hit all your sensitive spots inside through the curved angle.Â
Your face was turned against the ceiling as you decided to close your eyes, your hair cascading past your shoulder and winding with each rock of your groins. Only a little longer, you swore to yourself. For only a little longer, you wanted to stop time and lived in this moment as long as possible.
But your body was human even though you couldnât age in the godly realms, it painfully reminded you of that when Jaehyun dropped his palm and his fingers landed on your clit. You didnât have the same stamina, nor the same endurance to prolong and go on for hours, so when you came undone right above your husband with a scream, body and soul, you felt betrayed by your own remaining humanity.
You fully rode out your orgasm, but as Jaehyun made a move to take the lead now and flip you around, you pinned him in that position by locking his arms in place with your hands. Even though he was able to change positions easily, he didnât, and having you dominating turned him on so much, it didnât take you much more until he cum in long spurts all inside of you himself.
âI never believed you were a virgin in the first place,â Jaehyun breathed under you. âBut that you were capable of doing these kinds of things, I didnât believe either. Iâm impressed.â
âThere is so much more to me you wonât believe Iâm capable of,â you said, gaze stoically directed at the wall behind him, not moving from his lap to cuddle with him like usual, and he noticed.
âDidnât we talk about this?â Jaehyun brushed it off, assuming this was what withheld you from coming closer to him. âPeccadillos.â
You inhaled deeply, then lowered your gaze, hiding behind strands of your loose hair, because that was how cowardly you actually were. âTen years ago, I killed my father in a cold blooded murder,â you finally confessed. âNow, do you still want me as your wife?â
____
Jaehyun found you much later in one of the endless corridors as you had run away right after your confession. You had roamed through the palace in the meantime, at a loss about where to continue from here, and because you were afraid of his reaction. After all, you were always good at running away from things, no matter whether they were crimes or feelings.
As redness crested the horizon, you were leaning out of the window, guilty, but simultaneously full of relief to still see another dayrise.
âYou can think of a punishment fit for my crime,â you offered to Jaehyun without turning around. âI wonât mind.âÂ
Whatever it might be, it couldnât be as horrific as suffering on the torture fields for eternity. At least, he couldnât punish you with that. That was all you had wanted, wasnât it?Â
âI cannot judge over my equal,â your husband replied monotonously. âOnly the god who reigns over all godly realms can.â
âOh, so itâs like this.â You had thought you were oh so smart to trick yourself into staying in the underworld as a mortal only to find out that there was possibly a much more gruesome punishment than what Jaehyun would have had in store for you. âI was wrong in the end.â
All this time, you had had this secret locked away in a chest that you had thrown into the deepest abyss of your heart, pretending it was whole when it was frayed on every edge. Once you unlocked the chest that you had sealed shut for nearly a decade, the darkness that was kept within would consume all of you. Perhaps, right now was the perfect time to face it.
âWhen I was much younger,â you began deliberately, staring out of the window while sensing your husband approaching you with deliberate steps, âand my little sister barely a toddler, my father came home one night, totally drunk. At that point, he had been drinking almost every day for a few years already. What he earned from his cabinetwork and from what we sold in crops, vegetables and fruits, he spent it satisfying his addiction. My mother was always very careful to put us to sleep before he came home, but I was already old enough to witness with my own eyes and ears what was going on each night. Every morning, my mother came out of the bedroom with another bruise showing on her body when my father had long gone out again. That certain night though, he was thrashing around furniture, even waking my baby sister up who I then carried around. When I opened the door, he shoved the table against my mother, hitting her legs with full force and rendering her unconscious. Upon seeing us, he snatched my little sister out of my arms.â
âPlease.â Jaehyunâs attire made a rustling sound and then stilled, but he didnât reach out to touch you. Outwardly, you reacted as though you didnât care. You didnât want to care. Inwardly, you longed for his fingers traveling over your thighs just one more time. But he was willing to give you the space you needed. âYou don-.â
âThat night, I killed him,â you cut him off, because you knew that if you didnât do it now, you might never come so far again. âWhen he didnât want to let go of my sister and give her back to me, preparing himself to do to her what he did to our mother, I took a knife and stabbed him many, many times. My sisterâs crying was ringing in my ears long after he was dead, but I was still stabbing. I managed to calm my baby sister down and put her back to sleep. I tended my motherâs wounds and also brought her to bed before I took my fatherâs corpse and buried it deep in the woods. I spent half of the night digging his grave, the other half cleaning the wood off his blood. The next day, I told everyone I chased him off and he would never come back to hurt them again. The relief in their eyes made up for everything. They were so happy they were finally able to live in peace. But me? I have never found peace. I sacrificed my own happiness for my family. And I donât regret it. I was only a teenager when I made that decision.â
With every syllable, you felt the darkness eating up a bigger part of your heart, and it wouldnât be long until it had digested the entire organ. That was what you had always been afraid of, but it was also very relieving on the other hand. There was no pain anymore, just deep satisfaction, indicating a hint of regret for not having done it sooner.
Jaehyun didnât say anything afterwards, but you were prepared for everything that would happen now. At least, you could move on, at peace with yourself after a decade.
âMy soul might be dark, but I was not suffering. I was only afraid of what the darkness would do to me if I didnât keep it locked, under control. That I would hurt more people, especially my family. But I would do it over and over again if this is the only way to keep my family safe from monsters. Even if this monster is me. But you have to understandâŚâ You finally shifted around to your husband, revealing a face wet from tears. âWhen I ate the seeds, I had already decided to be your queen. But not for the same purpose for which I have decided to be your wife. When I decided to be your queen, it was because of the fear of ending on the torture fields myself if I ever got the chance to return to the mortal world. I thought I didnât deserve to continue living on earth alongside pure people like my mother and sister, because Iâm so filthy and corrupted. It was for my own protection, I was so scared after visiting the fields, thatâs why I ate the seeds.â
You fell down to your knees and the thin fabric of your nightgown couldnât cushion the pain that you felt when you smashed against the marble. But you didnât care. The only thing important to you now was to not lose your husband. You wanted to fight for him so that if he were to let you go, you could say you had been finally courageous and confident enough to have fought for your love.
Yes, love.
âBut when I decided to be your wife too, it was because I whole-heartedly wanted to stay by your side, because I-â The following confession twisted your guts, because you had never believed you would be able to say this to someone or even feel a sliver of it one day. But it was true, every single syllable. âBecause I love you.â
For a long moment, nothing happened, only your whimpers and sobs filling in the silence that stretched in the hallway, and the more you waited for a reaction, the more agonized you turned to the point of coming to accept the truth that you might have lost your husband forever. You cried even more.
âI finally understand.â You then felt Jaehyunâs fingertips on your skin, wandering along your shoulder and eventually resting there. âAll those years, you dedicated yourself to a simple, peaceful lifestyle to conceal the bloody tumult that youâve been through. In contrast to your flowery, colorful appearance, your soul was dark and suffering.â
The tip of his index finger then traveled to your chin and lifted it up, and the man whose eyes you locked with were neither your husband here in the palace nor the god of the underworld in the hall of judgment. Somehow they were both.Â
âIf possible, I might love you even more now,â he said before he kissed your tear-stained lips.
____
You shouldnât sit in the hall of judgment the same day when your sister still wasnât awake, but there was something you had to be shown according to Jaehyun, which was why he had ridden with you all across the deadlands again.
Today, there was no soul awaiting their judgment, so you wondered why you had been brought here in the first place. Painfully, the truth dawned on you though as Jaehyun urged you to stand in front of the dais and he took his own seat on his throne, the one in which you were supposed to sit empty this time.
You were the one to be judged.
âThere was something I have only informed you shortly about the first time you were here,â your husband then opened up as he settled in his throne. âThe fact that none of the souls entering the hall has to tell me their backstories. It would consume too much time and they would be able to conceal parts for they cannot straight up lie. I know their entire lives, histories and stories upon entering, they only tell me their point of view, their opinion. AndâŚâ He took a meaningful, long pause. âWith every soul, I mean every human, dead or alive.â
You stared at him for a moment, your brain processing what then washed over you in shocking realization all at once. With your hand, you covered your mouth, swallowing a gasp. âYou always knew?!â
Only then, you were able to relive the scene from three days ago when Taeyong broke down the news to you that someone from your family had come to get you. Jaehyun had known about the circumstances which made you believe that none of them were able to come down here despite you never having told him anything about your motherâs condition and your sisterâs age yourself. But back then, you had been so stressed, it had totally passed by you. He had indeed always known.
âItâs true, a decade ago on earth you made a drastic decision to self-judge and rob your father of his life, but you didnât bring this fate over him. I did when I decided to throw him onto the torture fields. I did the exact same thing as you. So why would I punish you for something that hadnât only protected you, but also the people you love the most?â
For that, you didnât have an answer. That your actions could be justifiable, you had always talked yourself into. But you had never been able to shake off the shadow that sometimes crossed your motherâs face when someone mentioned your father or your sister getting bullied for not having one. They believed he was still alive, but didnât fear he would ever return. If they knew the entire truth, it wouldnât change anything about their mindset other than seeing you as an entirely different person.
Yes, your lives had gotten considerably better without your father in regards to the living circumstances as he had barely financially and emotionally supported your family anyway. But by the looks of the village people, it had only brought you shame and misfortune to live like this as no one had wanted to marry your handicapped, single mother again - or even you. Subconsciously, you perpetually felt guilty for that you had to live the way you used to live. This all, you also told Jaehyun, and he only shook his head.
âYou cannot blame them for feeling this way like they cannot blame you for saving their lives. What if your father was still alive? This is a scenario nobody can answer to rightfully. You couldnât have sat around, waiting until he would change. Perhaps, you would have lost more than one person. Even when the tiniest part inside of them blames you for not having him around anymore, even if they knew the entire truth, you donât have to blame yourself too and make amends by playing the commendable child when there is so much more to you.â
âMuch⌠more?â
âYou were leading the life of a good daughter, always obedient, always loving. You grew flowers in hope they could conceal the darkness in your heart. But the truth isâŚâ Jaehyun arose from his throne, carefully stepping down the stairs while keeping his hands hidden behind his back, âwith the darkness that had settled inside you that day, you would have never been able to live a fulfilling life on earth, that was why you had decided to stay with me in the first place, not because you were scared. You were never afraid of me or anything else down here. You always only wanted to believe that because your mortal side couldnât justify your true feelings. The moment I saw the true you, I realized I couldnât let you go. Everything I said, none of that has ever been a lie, I always knew who you were.â
Was that true? Had he seen right through you from the very beginning? The day you had entered the hall from the very first time was the day he had proposed the throne to you without a second thought.
âYou fought hard against this, against us, because you thought you owed your life to your mother and sister as you might have ruined theirs to the point of nearly forgetting that you can bloom in your very own way when you donât dedicate your life to someone else. Of course you love them, but be brave and start loving yourself equally as much. Just like I do.â
For a split second, you were asking yourself whether you had made the wrong decision to eat the pomegranate seeds out of your own free will. But that was what it all boiled down to: Everything you had done happened out of your own free will that you had always been possessing as a human, even here, even now still.
âListen,â Jaehyun spoke gently when he finally stood in front of you, on the same level, as equals again. âTo be my queen is not a duty just any human is capable of. Itâs difficult, straining for body and soul, and requires a lot of self-control to not lose your mind. I wouldnât have proposed this position to you if I hadnât been sure you harbored all that. Your story has only assured me of the fact that in you, I wouldnât only find a wife, but someone who thinks and acts the same as me. So today, I pronounce your sentence.â
Even though his words had been sweet and everything you had been longing to hear, the last statement made you shudder. Would he still send you away?
âMy sentence for you is to be my queen, to stay by my side and reign alongside me always. Will you accept it?â
You felt something getting placed on the very top of your head. When you raised your arm and came in contact with the object, you touched something heavy and spiky - your very own crown, made of darkness and flowers that would never wither. You had exchanged flowers and pastels for flames and darkness.
âAs I said,â your husband smiled proudly this time, ânever in my entire lifespan have I ever made a wrong decision. You chose me. You love me. This is real, not the seven silly seeds you ate sealed the deal, but your love for me.â
The king of the underworld had accepted you. He was both the kindest and cruelest thing that had ever happened to you, even if others wouldnât perceive your tale like this. He had seen the darkness that resided inside you demanded its own throne, and he had shown you how a love like yours could turn even the coldest realm into a warm home.
You had never been afraid. You had never been held captive. You had voluntarily stayed. Why would you have cared about being a human bride when you could have been an eternal queen all along?Â
Oh, how you wished for everyone to know that the god of darkness who you could also call your husband, had the silkiest hair that felt especially soft when he was on his knees, coaxing spring from inside of you with your thighs wrapped around his neck.Â
____
âBut I donât want to leave without you,â your sister sobbed and wrapped her arms around you just a bit tighter. âWhy canât you come with me?â
By now, you werenât able to hold your tears back anymore either, and you just cried in each otherâs arms. The horse was already settled and stood by the main gate not far from you. Taeyong had volunteered to bring her back and was waiting there.Â
âAs I told you,â you explained patiently for the nth time to your little sister, âI cannot leave.â
âDid you truly eat the seeds of your own free will?â she asked warily.Â
You nodded. âI did.â
You werenât able to bring yourself to tell her the entire truth. One day, if you would ever get the possibility, when she was only a bit older and your paths crossed again, you promised to yourself that you would.Â
âBut how could you! He took you from the earth to a world where not a single living thing can grow and live!â
âSister, have you seen that every single flower on earth withers away?â You pried her from you and flashed an encouraging smile, all through the veil of blurring goodbye tears. âWhere is the difference? Our garden might only be small, but whatever grows there blossoms to its full potential, just like I can.â
âI donât understand, sis.â
âYou donât have to understand. You only have to believe me.â
âWhat will I tell mother?â she wanted to know. âShe misses you.â
âTell her I miss her too. And that sheâs going to be fine. Youâre both going to be fine, even without me.â
âSis, when will I see you again?â
Another wave of sadness rolled over you, but you swallowed it down this time and brushed over your sisterâs hair in a reassuring gesture. âI donât know.â
âHow will I live life without you?â
âStay kind, confident and courageous, always believe in yourself. After all, you made it all the way down here by yourself only. I wouldnât have been able to, but you did all that. Do you know how proud you can be of yourself, sis? Youâre going to grow up to be such a beautiful, smart and brave woman. Iâm certain about that, and Iâm already so proud of you, donât you ever forget that.â
âActually,â a manly voice interrupted you, and you both simultaneously turned to the side to watch your husband speak, âyou donât have to worry about that, dear. Your sister will come with you.â
âWhat?â you both called out, also simultaneously, but the fine difference lied in either of your tones.
While your sisterâs was full of joy, you barely brought out a syllable that wasnât dripping with worry and fear. Why would Jaehyun suggest something like that? Had he already forgotten everything he had said to you since your wedding day?
But the smile that spread across your husbandâs lips was full of happiness like your sisterâs with no hint of grudge as he approached you and placed his palms on each side of your face, looking at you with much love as opposed to his statement. You didnât understand.Â
âWhy are you sending me away?â you wanted to scream, but only brought out a whisper, fingers clutching onto the hem of his shirt. âPlease donât send me away!â
âIâm not sending you away.â His thumbs caressed your cheeks, and you only noticed then that something had changed in his eyes. It wasnât a look or a feeling that had been there before, and not weighing on the negative side either. In fact, nothing had been replaced or exchanged, only something slightly different that you couldnât pinpoint. Perhaps, it was all in your mind after all. âIâm sending you to live with your mother and sister each year for six months, spring throughout summer.â
Your brain was still processing when your sister was already expressing her joy through little bumps and screams that gradually turned into a singsong about how you were returning home.
âDonât worry,â Jaehyun calmed you down. âYou are the bones of my spine, the ground beneath my feet, the air Iâm breathing in. How could I possibly ever live without you again?â
âBut-!â
He silenced you by putting his index finger on your lip. âEvery year, when the first flowers bloom, you will be able to return to earth to live with your family. When you see the first leaves falling, that is when I will take you back to the underworld. You will bring spring, bursting with light, and leave with winter, dreary and cold. Does this duality fascinate you too?â
You had so many questions, first and foremost what he traded your freedom for, but you also didnât have time to ask any of them anymore as every minute that you lingered in the underworld robbed a sliver of your sisterâs lifespan.Â
You expressed your gratitude through hasty kisses with his arms slung around your back regardless of the presence of the other two as these would need to get you through the next months.Â
âI donât want you to feel lonely again when Iâm gone,â you said to him.
âDonât worry about that,â he reassured you. âI was patiently waiting half an eternity for you. I can wait another few months every year as long as you always come back to me.â
From now on, you could see yourself as a child of spring, wearing pastel colors and flowers in your hair on earth, and when returning home that was literally the underworld, donned all in black, you would pass sentence on lost souls in the hall of judgment as the queen of hell.
Yes, such duality fascinated you very much.
âWill you wait for me?â you asked when you were seated on the horseâs back with your sister in front and Taeyong behind you.
âEven if it takes you an eternity to come back to me.â
You leaned down, your husband embracing your cheeks on either side and giving you a long kiss that was supposed to last a few months in the moment a breeze came by and lifted the strands of your hair up in a swirl.
He trembled under the last gaze you threw at him before you rode off.
It wasnât a punishment, it was a reward - for you to see your mother and sister again, and live where flowers grew and never see them wither again.
After all, youâd come back this time, every time.
Out of your own free will.
_____
Jaehyun had known he should have regretted that certain forenoon of hasty decisions on earth. He had sensed you before he even saw you, soft, warm, light - everything he needed his future queen to be, so he didnât look further as he had gotten spared only one day.
There, in your motherâs garden, sun on your nose and wind in your hair, enveloped in the intense scent of yet to bloom flowers, it made even the hardest of hearts unharden, and suddenly the god of the underworld was only a man with an uncontrollable longing for your innocent sweetness.
âSheâs coming back today,â Taeyong said, pulling Jaehyun out of his thoughts. âIâll pick her up from the river and bring her here.â
âVery well,â Jaehyun answered, trying to downplay his excitement to welcome back his wife after so many months.
But his friend wouldnât stop budging. âSo, when are you going to tell her? What you traded her freedom for?â
âPossibly never, this is not something she will easily find out anyway. Itâs not like I traded being a king, a god. Weâll be fine.â
âAs long as no one wants to see you dead,â Taeyong stated with rolling eyes.
âThen letâs hope weâll live alongside in peace,â the king answered dryly and his friend only gave him a long, last sigh in response before riding off to his duty.
Jaehyun had searched for a fitting wife for so long, sick of isolation and darkness, but no one living in the godly realms matched with what he had been looking for. Every resident was involved in an endless game of rivalry, too cunning, too vile to make his already hard life easier. He needed someone simple, timid and narrow-minded who would gladly accept what a god could offer to them without a single complaint. A human.
But the person he had chosen wasnât all that. In a garden full of colorful plants, he had plucked the most dangerous flower of all. She was as beautiful as a rose, lulling him with her pure appearance and sugary scent, but her thorns stung and could cause him great harm.Â
Even on that day, he hadnât made a wrong decision, though it had looked like it in the very beginning as it all boiled down to either his instincts, luck or coincidence. But somehow, he had ended up combining all three and chose her.
His human guest only needed time, he had thought when she fought him like a panther in a cage upon their first meeting, so he had given her a few days to adjust and then intended to break down the advantages for her, hoping she would finally settle here in peace and then do for what he had brought her here: offering him company in all senses.
When she had walked into the dining room that one evening though, in a pastel silk dress he had chosen for his wife himself, looking and smelling like a freshly bloomed flower, but with eyes so fierce, Jaehyun swore he saw fire burning inside them, flames so intense like the ones on the torture fields.Â
Just like now.
She hadnât changed one bit since the day they had said goodbye to each other. Dressed all in black now with fiery eyes, she had returned to him, her attire as splendid as the crown in her hair, fitting for the queen of the underworld who was about to start her duties.
They were grinning at each other from afar already, and she was coming to a halt right in front of the dais.Â
âYouâre back,â Jaehyun stated stoically, but his voice shook with emotion when he arose. âI missed you.â
âI am,â you whispered. âAnd I missed you too.â
When he had been an immortal god, he had felt invincible. But Jaehyun hadnât felt like this in months, and for a long while, he had been worried about that, about never being able to feel so powerful again.
But as he was holding his wife and his queen in his arms again after such a long period of separation, inhaling her scent, feeling her soft skin, hearing her warm voice whispering his name, he suddenly regained all of what he had thought lost when he had traded his immortality for her freedom, for her true happiness.
He didnât need his immortality to feel immortal.
He only needed her.

Solangelo thoughts. Greet me with a kiss. And some facts from TSATS because I can't get over them.
So I have this headcanon that since Nico was born in the 1930s. He was raised to act gentleman-like.
When greeting someone, like your partner, a woman in higher power âor a woman in general. They would kiss the back of their hand.
Nico grew up with women. (Older sister and mother.) Of course he's taught to be gentlemanly to women.
So he probably had this talk of how to treat his partner. How to court a woman. With flowers and sweet nothings or murmurs.
So stoll he has a bit of his past that he remembers still left. And he has those sweetheart traits.
He remembers what to do and so.. Kind of incorporates it when courting Will.
So whenever he greets Will, (Now in the dating stage.) just imagine him taking his hand catching Will off guard, and plants a kiss on the back of his hand in a gentlemanly manner and simply says. "Good morning."
Imagine the taken aback and flustered look from Will upon this gesture. Imagine the little agape moutsh from the others witnessing this little moment when they realize oh my goshâ the creepy scary son of Hades is a gentleman.
Now imagine before they're dating. People suspect it's Nico who'll be courted and Will courting him. Cause y'know.. Stereotypes.
But then imagine walking by the infirmary and you see a son of Hades with a bouquet of flowers, well groomed hair and some kind of suit. With a stunned, red-face, profusing blush all over the son of Apollo at the entrance.
Both of them have a blush in fact. It's just that one is out of embarrassment, and one is just stunned. And by the sake of the gods you hear the son of Hades say something along the lines.
"Will you go out with me..?" While handing the bouquet with ears red like a tomato.
And he just greets him with flowers on every date they go or something. (A lot of them are from Persephone.)
Imagine little moments of Will shivering in the cold weather. And Nico just offering his jacket (I like to think it's a jacket that actually fits the both of them. It was big at first but he grew into it slowly.) and he wraps it around Will's shoulders and just checking on him making sure he's not going to catch a cold.
Now for the rant.
It IS canon that Will has done the fainting trick on Nico multiple times. (As mentioned in TSATS.) So just imagine Nico near Will and after doing a bunch of hefty, draining shifts he collapses and Nico is there to catch him quickly and scoop him up in his arms knowing he doesn't have the energy to stay balanced. All while cursing under his breath because he wouldn't take a break.
But he knows the only way to get Will to take a break is him passing out.
And he canonically helps Will over something even though both of them are exhausted. Like in that one scene he helps Will over a tree branch before him then climbs it over himself despite the hands that are held out for him.
He waves them away saying Will's more exhausted than him and that he doesn't need it, is a TRUE gentleman. đ
The way he reassures him when walking down the path in TSATS. The way he just plants kisses on the back of his neck in the tunnel and tells him he's doing so WELL???
He is canonically a gentleman towards Will. Either always holding his hand or kissing him.
Nico is genuinely a sweet guy who just so happens to pretend to be cold as a way to defend himself from others.
We love him. :3 I love him. He's actually so sweet. đ

âoh, dear. you look like youâve seen a ghostâ
âI donât think I thought things throughâ
sally frowns and sits on the bench beside you. ânervous?â
âyes. do you think percy really wants to get married? or is he just saying it so I can be happy?â
â(name), marriage is the only topic he has been able to stay on since it happened. I can assure you he is over the moon about thisâ
you feel tears brewing in your eyes but you quickly push them back to prevent ruining your makeup. âreally?â
âyes, darling. Iâd never lie to youâ
you open your mouth to speak but the door opens, revealing your brother. âweâre starting in fiveâ
you turn back to sally and mutter a quiet âthank youâ before exiting the room with nico and you begin walking out to the double doors leading to the beach
âtake twoâ nico jokes, holding his arm out for you to link yours with, instead you throw your arms around him, without a doubt he returns the embrace
âthank you, nicoâ
âfor what?â
âfor being my brotherâ
âwell then youâll be happy to know Iâll always be your brother. even if you decide you hate meâ
you pull away with a sigh and loop your arms through his. âI think Iâm readyâ
âpromise me somethingâ
âanythingâ
âyouâll visit me in the underworldâ
âI will. Iâm sure percy isnât very welcome there anymore thoughâ
you both burst out into an uncontrollable laughter. when you try to get any words out your stopped but your inability to breathe
âoh my godsâ imagine dadâs face!â
the image of hades seeing your boyfriend husband fills your mind, making you lose any breath you had left. you decide to add onto the fit, âdo you knowâ how dad was so eager to get me married-â you breathe out âhe was obsessed with triton Iâm starting to think he likes him more than momâ
ânow thatâs a wedding I would like to attendâ
when both of your breathing steadies back to normal you collect yourself and wipe the slight tears that streamed down your face, fixing your hair to assure you like presentable for guests
âokay Iâm ready for real nowâ
âthen letâs get you married!â
you take in one last deep breath before opening the double doors and walking out onto the platform covering the sandy ground. the scent of salt water fills your scenes instantly. this time it wasnât because of your asshole ex husband. this may have been the most nerve wracking part of the weddingâ people watching your every move, but when your eyes meet a pair of sea-green ones your nerves feel at peace
when you finally make your way to the altar you hug nico once more before ushering him to his seat, then taking both percyâs hands into yours to prevent them from shaking anymore
âstrapless dress? howâd you know those are my favorites?â
your cheeks flush red and you roll your eyes. âshut upâ
âwant me to save the dirty talk for later? I understand, my mouth is sealedâ
when everyone finally settles the officiate begins speaking all that nonsense that they say at weddings. youâve never actually been to one but you supposed if you were in the crowd this might have been the perfect opportunity to take a nap. he talked on and on for what felt like forever until the vows and until the ending kissâ your personal favorite part. when he finally said the iconic âyou may kiss the brideâ you were sure youâve never seen percy move as fast as he did then, quickly throwing your arms around each other into a very non-audience appropriate kiss which on a normal day you wouldâve scolded percy for but you were to happy to care about anything right now
ŕŠâŠâ§âË
you didnât end up getting home until around midnight unfortunately. and you should have seen it that the moment you got walked through the doors percy would be eagerly sliding your dress zipper down. you made him wait howeverâ finding it amusing every time you pulled his hands off you, making him wait until you were in your shared bedroom. after what felt like percyâs whole life (he was sure it had been) he was able to unzip your white dress
âyouâre quite eagerâ you laugh. percy ignores your comment and slides your dress off once the zipper was undone, you fumble with your legs to throw it on the floor, then connect your lips back with percyâs as you unbutton his white shirt
âhave I told you that you look gorgeous tonight?â he mumbles into your mouth, making butterflies erupt into a frenzy in your stomach
âfifteen timesâ
when finally you unbutton the rest of the shirt you tear it off and throw it to the sideâ you only hope it didnât hit anything important. percy then slides his hand from your bare waist to your underwear, and slowly slides them down your legs. you know for sure youâre not getting even a second of sleep tonight

_____
He never understood his brother, hurling his lightning bolts from the heavens at defenceless people in a rage â he did not understand his volatility, he did not understand his irrepressible desire, his unlimited emotionality.
He did not understand how he could desire and feel so many things at once, having his sister-wife haunt and take other goddesses, nymphs, or even human women, begetting bastards on earth and in the heavens.
He did not understand him, for he was emptiness, abyss, coldness, the opposite of his impulsiveness, his eternal volatility â he was like stone, like white marble, soul as well as body.
The only desire he had ever known in his life was the desire for power, and for this his brother deprived him of one eye before casting him into a dark abyss where not even the light of the stars could reach.
Although he was a god, his brother's blow could not be undone and he was forever disfigured, the dark hole in his face filled with a precious stone, sapphire, shining with a disturbing blue light.
Accustomed to the darkness of Hades, he could no longer bear the intense light of the sun and rarely appeared on Olympus itself; he would wander through his dark caverns in his long, black matted robe and gaze at the river Styx, at its pale light and the contorted terrified faces of the souls who swam in it.
When word reached him that his brother had mated with their other sister, the goddess of the field crops, and that she had bore him a daughter, he was neither surprised nor interested â he did not come to celebrate her birth on Olympus or congratulate his brother.
His brother had often suggested to him that he should take a wife, that he should not be alone in the darkness of the underworld.
He, however, felt no such need.
Even his sister, known as the Goddess of Love and Desire, was unable to seduce him.
She touched his naked body with her soft lips and hands, but he felt nothing but embarrassment.
He left Hades only once a year, when his favourite constellation emerged in the sky â he would then stroll through the old, dense forest looking up at the stars, breathing in the fresh air, listening to the rustle of the leaves.
When this time of year came, when he left his caves and looked up, he felt contentment at the sight of the twinkling dots in the sky, the pleasant night breeze enveloping his cold body.
He strolled slowly and aimlessly, looking upwards, all around him only the quiet rustling of his robes and the sound of dew-wet grass lingering beneath his feet.
He froze as he heard someone's footsteps break a twig not far from him â he knew he was not alone and he was furious.
He thought that whoever this mortal was, he would flow right down his river of the dead.
He tilted his head to the side and saw a pale figure illuminated only by shy starlight, her body pressed against the trunk of a tree as if she wanted to take refuge in it, her face expressing helpless anxiety.
Her eyes were big, warm and as dark as his robe, her hair long, partly loose, partly decorated with rich braids encircling her head, small blue flowers woven into her hair.
Her full, moist, fleshy lips were parted slightly in an accelerated breath, her breasts which he could see perfectly through the thin, transparent material of her robe were rising and falling restlessly, her skin glistening like moonlight.
He stared at her, unable to move or make a sound, unsure if he had ever seen a being so infinitely beautiful in his life, luminous as the stars above his head.
He swallowed loudly when he saw that she had taken a step back to retreat, to escape.
"Is it the beautiful Evening Star herself who has left the sky to enchant me with her company?" He asked lowly, impassively, his voice though assured and direct trembled, betraying his desperation.
She stopped in mid-motion and looked at him again, surprised and embarrassed at the same time by his words â it seemed to him that he saw perfectly well how her cheeks flushed, giving her skin a rose tint.
She pressed her lips together watching him carefully, lifting her chin slightly as if probing him closely from afar, assessing whether he was a threat to her, whether he would hurt her.
He was unable to take his eyes off her.
"I will tell you who I am only if you tell me who you are." She whispered in a trembling, gentle tone.
A smirk appeared on his face at the thought that maybe she was a nymph who had ventured too far from her friends, and that she was at his mercy now.
He hummed under his breath and moved ahead, putting his hands behind his back, looking under his feet, moving unhurriedly towards her.
"They call me many names." He said with mischievous amusement, throwing her a piercing, disturbing look from which she shuddered all over, taking a step back again.
"My river, though water is a life-giving gift, brings death." He whispered once he was a few steps away from her, wanting her to solve the riddle herself, to exert herself.
She swallowed loudly, her eyes widening suddenly, as if she had just realised something.
"â uncle â" She whispered, and he froze, stopping in mid-step; for the first time in the thousands of years he had walked the world he felt his own heart pounding hard.
He looked at her in disbelief, and it was only at close that he saw that she did indeed have something of his brother and sister in her, though it was her she resembled more â he felt himself grow even paler than usual, his hands clenched into fists behind his back.
She, however, seemed not frightened about who he was, her face took on an expression full of contentment and warmth. She moved closer to him and now it was he who took a step back feeling a strange heat in his lower abdomen, his manhood throbbed suddenly as he caught a glimpse of the outline of her soft breasts.
"My mother told me a lot about you. About the sun hurting your eye." She said softly, and he swallowed loudly seeing that she was staring at his scar, at the stone placed where his eye once was.
He thought he was like Hephaestus, hideous, disfigured, and that she would never desire him.
He felt his jaw clench tightly, his body tense, hard as granite when she tentatively placed her soft hand on his shoulder, he felt the warmth of her flesh through the thin material of his robe.
He didn't know what was happening to his body, he felt tickling and tension in his lower abdomen, a strenuous need for some kind of relief that he didn't understand.
"Stay with me to watch the sunrise. Don't sink into darkness yet." She whispered as if in worry â he couldn't tear his eyes from her face, from her warm gaze.
He was unable to comprehend how any living being could be so beautiful.
"No." He said coldly, and then grasped her in his arms, his hands clenching on her soft, hot flesh like steel tongs.
For a moment she couldn't make a sound, terrified and shocked â she didn't scream when he threw her over his shoulder and headed towards his underworld, cold, dark, damp.
It was only when she realised what he was doing that she began to struggle and cry, calling loudly for help from her mother and father, begging him not to do it, to let her go, that she would not tell anyone about it.
He, however, decided to follow his brother's advice and take a wife.
The marriage required the oaths from both of them, but this did not prevent him from acknowledging her as his wife even though she refused to speak the words.
Even though he had given her his most beautiful chamber, on whose ceiling precious minerals shimmered like stars, in which streams of water hummed, in which she could lie on a great, soft bed, she did not want to see him.
He was not his brother.
He had no intention of taking her against her will.
It was enough for him that he could look at her every day.
Only him.
He bestowed new gifts on her every day, but she still cried.
He gave her a beautiful long gown of dark, translucent material embroidered with stones in which the warm light of the sun was encased after she said she longed to see it, but she didn't even look at it.
The blue flowers in her hair withered as did the warmth in her eyes â she was slowly becoming as pale as he was and was constantly shivering from the cold.
She would not let him embrace or touch her; she covered herself with the thick furs he had given her and turned away from him.
Occasionally something would awaken in her â she would then run up to him when he visited her and beg him to let her leave to see her mother.
"I promise you that I will come back and that I will be your wife. Please, let me see the sunshine and the fresh grass one last time." She begged, touching tenderly his cold cheek with her fingers, almost as if she loved him, and he almost gave in to her every time.
"I can't, Persephone." He replied coolly, feeling some kind of pain seeing the despair on her face, hearing her helpless sobbs again, her small hands clenched on his robe, her cheek hugged to his chest.
"My name is Kora." She mumbled with difficulty, as if enraged. He hummed at her words, lifting slowly his large, cold hand, taking unruly strands of her hair from her face, all red from crying.
"Persephone, this name, is my gift to you. For my sweet wife." He whispered, and she trembled, struggling to breathe, shaking all over.
"â please â" She babbled as he embraced her uncertainly and stroked her hair, relishing its soft texture, letting her draw on this substitute of comfort.
He walked with her through the interiors of Hades, wanting to show her that besides death, there was also beauty in the underworld â underground streams and lakes with crystal clear water, his three-headed, beloved Cerberus, who in his presence turned from a monstrous beast into a gentle, docile animal.
Sometimes it seemed to him that a smile adorned her face for a moment, but then the sadness came over her again â she shuddered with cold and fear hearing the wailing of souls floating in the Styx, she glanced nervously in that direction, swallowing loudly.
"Are they suffering a lot? Can they be helped?" She whispered, and he hummed under his breath, walking beside her with his arms folded behind his back.
"They are paying for what they have done in their lifetime. Their merits and transgressions have been weighed by Temida, who has issued a judgment on them. There is nothing I can do." He admitted with a glance at her, and she lowered her gaze, looking down at her hands.
"Are you afraid of me?" He asked her at last, and she lifted her large, frightened eyes to him, her lips parted but no sound came from her throat. He pressed his lips together, feeling a sting in his chest.
He asked her if she was afraid of him after he had kidnapped her and held her against her will.
What did he expect?
The wrath of his brother and sister was quickly getting to him â her mother distraught at her disappearance had fallen into a state of utter agony, people were being starved to death by the land's failure to yield crops, there were more souls flowing in the Styx than he had ever seen in his centuries-long life.
He felt a kind of satisfaction when his brother descended into the underworld for the first time since time immemorial; he hated to think about dying and passing, and could not grasp the meaning of such a short life, knowing only the meaning of infinity himself.
He came out to meet him sitting proudly on his black marble throne, thousands of skulls at his feet.
For the first time he looked down on his brother, a gigantic cave all around them, Styx surrounding them on all sides except a small bridge.
"Brother. I warn you for the last time. If you don't give me my daughter..."
"Then what? I should take a wife at last â those are your words, aren't they?" He asked with a sneer, sitting stretched out comfortably in his seat.
"I want to see her." He demanded, and his lips tightened at his words. "Or I'll take her away from you myself and you'll never see her again."
"I poured water from my river into the honey she drank. Like any soul who has already bound herself to the underworld, she will not leave Hades without my permission." He said calmly, and his brother's face flushed red, his angry low voice echoing around him so that the ground shook around them.
"I WANT TO SEE HER!"
He hummed under his breath and nodded to his servant to bring her in.
His wife came out of her chamber a moment later â when she saw her father she immediately beamed, ran to him and threw herself into his arms.
He looked at them coolly, feeling his heart pounding fast, his stomach twisting with rage.
"My sweet daughter. Did he hurt you?" He asked as if the welfare of any woman mattered to him, as if he hadn't raped an endless number of innocent girls, forgetting them quickly because they were dying in what seemed to him to be just the blink of an eye.
He swallowed loudly when his Persephone shook her head, tightening her lips, lowering her head.
"He's good to me." She whispered and he felt a squeeze in his heart, a pain he had never known before.
His brother looked at him accusingly, trying to contain his aggressive, abrupt nature.
"People are suffering hunger because of you. Her mother has gone mad with despair, the flowers are not blooming, the grains are not yielding. Let them be together at least a few months of the year and I will recognise your marriage in the eyes of Olympus." He suggested, and he furrowed his brow.
"No." He hissed coldly, his gaze icy, piercing, furious, his hand clenched into a fist. "She is my wife. A wife's place is with her husband."
His brother moved in fury, wanting to lash out at him, the ground shook around them again, but his daughter's hand stopped him.
"Let us speak alone, father." She said softly; his brother backed away, panting heavily, his jaw clenched tight.
He hummed under his breath when he saw his wife move towards him, climbing the black, cold stone steps to finally stand before him â his brother snorted and turned, walking away, furious.
He looked up at his Persephone massaging his chin, delighted to see the outline of her body shapes beneath her thin white robe.
He shuddered and swallowed loudly, shocked as she sat on his lap, his manhood throbbed suddenly feeling her body so close, her fresh scent like a cool morning breeze.
"â husband â" She whispered with a soft click of her pink tongue, her hips innocently rubbing against his hardness, his body shivered at the sound of that word.
She had never called him that before.
She touched his cheek with her soft fingertips so gently, tenderly, slow strokes of her hips teasing him so innocently, that he parted his lips, breathing with increasing difficulty, his palms tightening on his cold stone armrests.
He could feel his length pulsing and swelling with every motion she made, he didn't understand what was happening to him.
He didn't stop her when she reached up to tie of his matte black robe, he drew in a loud breath and closed his eyelids when her delicate hand tentatively touched what was underneath.
"I am yours. I will give myself to you of my own free will." She whispered in a sweet, warm, trembling voice, her gaze misty, her lips full, swollen, red from emotion.
A quiet, low groan broke from his throat as he felt her hand direct the fat head of his manhood between her thighs with a gentle movement, he could see through the translucent material as she slowly began to sink him into her body.
He tilted his head back with quiet moan, licking his lower lip, feeling her hot, fleshy insides squeeze him wonderfully from all sides â she was surprisingly moist and warm, her core throbbing with arousal.
He felt her put her hands on his shoulders, lowering herself onto him with a loud, sweet gasp, her plump lips parted wide.
His hands involuntarily gripped her hips as she began to move, rising and falling against his length so painfully slowly that he had to close his eyelids shut, panting louder and louder along with her.
"â gods â" He exhaled with difficulty as she accelerated, the loud, sticky slaps of flesh against flesh echoing through the dark cavern, his manhood throbbing and twitching inside her, all hard and swollen with pleasure.
Involuntarily, his cold fingers clenched on the hot skin of her hips â he rooted his manhood into her tight, moist insides with his desperate, pathetic thrusts, her sticky moisture dripping down her thighs.
"â for our marriage to be valid you must fill me with yourself, my husband â" She whispered, pressing her forehead against his, droplets of sweat glistening on her body like little diamonds, her sweet moans of pleasure, her slick walls sucking him inside made him loose his temper.
He gasped weakly at her words, he had never felt a woman's insides before, had never desired anyone before her.
He felt like his manhood was going to explode with desire and lust, his thrusts became faster and more brutal, her soft breasts bouncing in front of his face â he lifted his hand and squeezed it tentatively, a soft mewl of delight erupted from her throat.
"â Persephone â" He breathed out pleadingly, imploringly, and then she kissed him, her hot, swollen, moist lips clinging to his, cold, dead, the tips of their tongues licking each other.
"â please â" She mewled although he didn't know what she was actually asking him, and then he heard her cry loudly, as if surprised, her hot insides clenching against him greedily, her tongue deep in his throat.
He felt with each thrust of his hips that he was getting closer and closer to something he'd never experienced before in his life.
Fulfilment.
The wave of heat and pleasure, his seed that spilled inside her surprised him so much that his voice stuck in his throat, and then again and again a low, helpless groan broke from his mouth â both of them were panting as they looked at each other with their lips open wide, his hands clenched painfully tight on her hips.
"I'm yours." She whispered softly, sweetly â he was looking at her feeling only peace, only love. "I am only yours, so please, let me see her."
He felt the heat in his heart replaced by coldness, his brow furrowed in a sense of anger, of pain, of betrayal.
"No." He hissed, wanting to lift her up, but she shook her head, cupping his face in her warm, soft hands.
"I will never truly be your wife if you won't trust me. If I don't come back to you of my own free will." She said helplessly, pain, fear and suffering in her eyes again, his lips tightened into a thin line at her words.
"Nine months with my mother so I can enjoy the sun, and then three here, just with you, every night, every day, I swear." She whispered tenderly pressing her face against his cheek, her scent overpowering and stupefying him, her warm insides still pleasantly enveloping his already soft manhood.
He swallowed loudly at her words, his palms digging firmly into the soft skin of her thighs.
"You're lying. You will never come back to me." He hissed and groaned low when he felt her hips begin to move up and down again with a loud click of her wetness and his spend, his manhood pulsed involuntarily with pleasure, betraying him.
"I'll come back. I promise I'll come back."
As much as she wanted him to lead her away, he didn't want to watch her disappear beyond the borders of Hades never to return.
He didn't want to watch her run merrily towards the light, thanking the gods for his weakness and naivety, for how every woman in history had been able to exploit a man's desires.
He did not want her to see his expression, his suffering and all the other feelings he did not want to feel.
The day after she left, he went to her chamber and lay in her bedding, sinking his nose into her scent.
He found, with regret and pain, that with each passing month her scent grew fainter and fainter, her silhouette in his mind becoming more and more blurred, as if he had never really met her.
He touched himself thinking about her, experiencing both wonderful and painful fulfilment with the knowledge that he would never feel her again.
He preferred to explain to himself that it was just a dream.
That he had never met her.
He knew she would not return.
She would not return to her captor, to the man who had kept her in a dark underworld for months, deaf to her pleas and sobs, a man who was crippled, who was cold, frightening and empty.
Despite this, despite knowing it, when the day came he could think of nothing else â he watched as the sand shifted in the great hourglass constructed of bone and glass as he lay in his chamber, drinking wine, feeling like a demented madman, listening for her footsteps amidst the groans of the dead.
She did not come.
He stared at the empty hourglass, which turned and the sand began to shift again, counting down the time of the new day; he wondered how he could have been so naĂŻve to wait.
For the first time in ages he felt an embarrassing, burning wetness under his eyelids â proof that he really loved her.
He shuddered when he heard the quiet rustling of robes â he glanced sideways and saw her standing in the doorway of his dark chamber, in her hair beautiful small yellow flowers, her face bright and warm.
She wore the gown he had given her, black, decorated with sun rays stones.
"My mother kept me. She couldn't let me go." She whispered, and he felt his throat tighten, his body freeze, unable to make a sound or make any movement.
He breathed hard, looking at her with wide eyes, his lower lip and hands trembling involuntarily as she approached him slowly, as her hands untied the bindings of his robe with a light, easy motion, revealing what was underneath, how much he wanted her, how much he waited for her.
"I have been counting down the days when I will see your face again." She whispered, running her fingers over his scarred cheek, sitting on top of him, gently taking his hard length in her palm, lowering herself onto the fat head of his cock as if it was the most natural thing in the world.
He wanted to tell her that he didn't believe her, but instead a surprised, throaty groan of pleasure burst from his mouth â he tilted his head back, panting loudly, his hips involuntarily beginning to root his manhood into her fleshy, moist insides, her hands clenched on his shoulders.
"â fuck â" He gasped out looking at her with his lips parted, synchronising his thrusts with the rhythm of her body â he swallowed loudly as she slid the material of her robe off her shoulders, exposing her soft, plump breasts to him.
"â touch me, husband â" She cooed, and he lifted himself, immediately pressed his lips to her breast, sucking on it greedily, licking and teasing her nipple with his tongue, all hard with desire.
She sank her fingers into his long white hair and pressed his face against her chest, rising and falling on top of him with a loud click of her moisture, moaning so sweetly and loudly that he felt like his manhood was about to explode.
"â were you touching yourself? â did you touch yourself when you weren't with your husband? â" He hissed out in a trembling voice between flicks of his tongue, she kissed his hair in an attempt to soften his question and her answer.
"â forgive me, husband â forgive me, I've missed you so terribly â" She mumbled helplessly as he ran his fingers down her hips, twisting with her so that she fell on her back.
He gripped her thighs in his hands, looking down at her â her face all red with exertion, her hair scattered in disarray around her head, her body all bare before him, hot, beautiful, his.
"â I think I should remind you to who this body belongs to â" He growled, ending his sentence with a deep, brutal thrust, a loud, surprised moan escaping from her throat.
"â you are mine â"
Thrust.
"â mine â"
Thrust.
"â mine â"
Thrust.
"â repeat â"
"â I â I'm yours â I'm yours, forgive me, uncle â" She mumbled out with difficulty and drew in the air loudly as he spread her thighs shamelessly in front of him, looking down at the place where their bodies joined, her entrance clenching against him steadily, leaking with her wetness.
"â I forgive you, sweet wife â" He gasped, recognising this act of grace as an expression of his love and gratitude that she had not betrayed him, that she had returned, that he held her in his arms again.
"â I'll fill you with my seed and it'll be just as it should be â" He exhaled as he watched the perverse sight of their bodies slamming against each other with a loud slaps, his thrusts deep and sure, each time opening her wide on his thick, swollen cock.
He couldn't believe that she had come back to him, that he could smell her wonderful, floral scent again, that she was allowing him to possess her of her own free will.
Her fingers grasped his hand and sank it between her thighs â he felt her direct him to the small bud between her soft folds, she moaned when he touched her there.
"â here, husband â please â" She mewled and moaned loudly, throwing her head back as he began to rub her there, simultaneously caressing her inside and out, her core beginning to pulse greedily against him.
"â gods â stop clenching â" He exhaled with difficulty, rooting into her with quick, brutal thrusts of his hips, stretching her fleshy walls apart with the sticky click of her moisture.
He felt that if he went on like this he would simply come inside her, when he wanted to torment her, to prolong the moment of this immense pleasure and encounter after so many months.
"â I can't â I can't â" She sobbed loudly and he saw her fulfilment in all its glory, her hot, soft flesh went through convulsions, greedily sucking him inside, her lips parted wide in pleasure, her gaze misty and warm.
He cursed loudly, coming inside her so painfully hard that he clenched his eyes shut, panting loudly, rooting into her for a moment longer, the relief and delight that surged through his body was indescribable.
He looked at her beautiful face, her hands on either side of her head, her expression nothing but fulfilment and peace, her breathing uneven and ragged, her breasts rising and falling rapidly.
She looked up at him after a moment and smiled sleepily, raising her hand slowly â her soft fingertips ran over his scarred cheek and he closed his eyes, feeling pleasant, hot squeeze in his heart.
"What is my wife's name?" He asked in a whisper, kissing her warm, small hand, smelling of fresh grass and flowers. He heard her sigh sweetly at his question, her fingers sliding lower, running over his cold lips.
"Persephone."

In my Zeus bag today so I'm just gonna put it out there that exactly none of the great Ancient Greek warrior-heroes stayed loyal and faithful and completely monogamous and yet none of them have their greatness questioned nor do we question why they had the cultural prominence that they did and still do.
Jason, the brilliant leader of the Argo, got cold feet when it came to Medea - already put off by some of her magic and then exiled from his birthland because of her political ploys, he took Creusa to bed and fully intended on marrying her despite not properly dissolving things with Medea.
Theseus was a fierce warrior and an incredibly talented king but he had a horrible temper and was almost fatally weak to women. This is the man who got imprisoned in the Underworld for trying to get a friend laid, the man who started the whole Attic War because he couldn't keep his legs closed.
And we cannot at all forget Heracles for whom a not inconsiderable amount of his joy in life was loving people then losing the people around him that he loved. Wives, children, serving boys, mentors, Heracles had a list of lovers - male and female - long enough to rival some gods and even after completing his labours and coming down to the end of his life, he did not have one wife but three.
And y'know what, just because he's a cultural darling, I'll put Achilles up here too because that man was a Theseus type where he was fantastic at the thing he was born to do (that is, fight whereas Theseus' was to rule) but that was not enough to eclipse his horrid temper and his weakness to young pretty things. This is the man that killed two of Apollo's sons because they wouldn't let him hit - Tenes because he refused to let Achilles have his sister and Troilus who refused Achilles so vehemently that he ran into Apollo's temple to avoid him and still couldn't escape.
All four of these men are still celebrated as great heroes and men. All four of these men are given the dignity of nuance, of having their flaws treated as just that, flaws which enrich their character and can be used to discuss the wider cultural point of what truly makes a hero heroic. All four of these men still have their legacies respected.
Why can that same mindset not be applied to Zeus? Zeus, who was a warrior-king raised in seclusion apart from his family. Zeus who must have learned to embrace the violence of thunder for every time he cried as a babe, the Corybantes would bang their shields to hide the sound. Zeus learned to be great because being good would not see the universe's affairs in its order.
The wonderful thing about sympathy is that we never run out of it. There's no rule stopping us from being sympathetic to multiple plights at once, there's no law that necessitate things always exist on the good-evil binary. Yes, Zeus sentenced Prometheus to sufferation in Tartarus for what (to us) seems like a cruel reason. Prometheus only wanted to help humans! But when you think about Prometheus' actions from a king's perspective, the narrative is completely different: Prometheus stole divine knowledge and gifted it to humans after Zeus explicitly told him not to. And this was after Prometheus cheated all the gods out of a huge portion of wealth by having humans keep the best part of a sacrifice's meat while the gods must delight themselves with bones, fat and skin. Yes, Zeus gave Persephone away to Hades without consulting Demeter but what king consults a woman who is not his wife about the arrangement of his daughter's marriage to another king? Yes, Zeus breaks the marriage vows he set with Hera despite his love of her but what is the Master of Fate if not its staunchest slave?
The nuance is there. Even in his most bizarre actions, the nuance and logic and reason is there. The Ancient Greeks weren't a daft people, they worshipped Zeus as their primary god for a reason and they did not associate him with half the vices modern audiences take issue with. Zeus was a father, a visitor, a protector, a fair judge of character, a guide for the lost, the arbiter of revenge for those that had been wronged, a pillar of strength for those who needed it and a shield to protect those who made their home among the biting snakes. His children were reflections of him, extensions of his will who acted both as his mercy and as his retribution, his brothers and sisters deferred to him because he was wise as well as powerful. Zeus didn't become king by accident and it is a damn shame he does not get more respect.
