People should get reimbursed for commute time
If it takes someone over an hour to get to work, that should be part of their pay.
Many people have to commute long distances/through areas of slow traffic because they cannot afford to live closer to their workplace. This is also why work from home is a big thing.
If corporations want people to return to their offices, they need to make it appealing enough. I'm not going to fight through traffic for 2 hrs in my free time just to sit at a computer all day, when I could just stay home and don't waste that time.
Corporations would be forced to invest in local affordable housing, perhaps even affording housing credits. They would need to invest in local infrastructure (which in the US is falling to pieces) and improve public transport in their area (faster commute -> less cost to the company, less cars on road -> traffic moves faster, employees without cars would still be able to get to work). Also people would be less stressed and actually take the time to drive safely because they wouldn't feel the need to rush. It would make companies actually take an interest in how their workers get to work and investing in local communities.
I live sort of near DC. We have a HUGE amount of workers commuting into the city and its surrounding cities. Retail workers also have to commute to these cities and suburbs because they cannot afford to live in those areas. My boyfriend commutes an hour to his part time job at a kennel in a rich town. A lot of people live in the more affordable, lower income, far away areas in the nearby states because housing prices in my area are fucking insane. I knew someone who commuted 2+ hours to work and 2+ hours back. There are people who drive even more than that.
And where do these employees have to live? Food deserts. Crumbling infastructure. No parks, no walkability, no public transport, bare bones everything. Only the cities which only the few can afford have basic infrastructure. And even the people living there have to commute to OTHER even richer areas. There's a ton of places where housing developments have just been shoved and are surrounded by nothing but farms. There's nothing local to do, so everyone goes to the closest town and city. It's also why you see a lot of older towns have abandoned main streets. Why have your business cater to the 100 people who live there when you can be in a city with thousands?
There has been some recent interest in paid commute times. 1 2 especially with corporations trying to get workers to go back to the office. Personally, I love working in my office because having a separate space outside my home helps me keep work and home separate and allows me to focus easier since I'm not in "home mode". I don't have room for an office in my parents house so working from home kinda sucks rn even though it would help a lot since I'm disabled. But it is nice being physically near my coworkers, even if it gets annoying sometimes. Also many jobs involve fieldwork (like mine!) which can't be done remotely anyway!
There would be incentive for corporations to keep their employees close AND provide more remote work options for those living farther away. As well as matching pay to fit rent/housing prices in the area (or vice versa).
Also there needs to be something done about corporations having their entire workforce sourced from another country entirely, working for pennies. But that's an even more complicated situation that I don't have experience in.
#long post#its 6am rant time#its so much more sustainable to have people live and work in the same communities#so many resources are spent on commute#i like my drive because it gives me time to wake up and i like just sitting n focusing for a bit#but my commute is also pretty easy since I am going away from the city towards the lower income areas#on the other direction it is backed up completely most days#we drive a lot during work to bc we visit different restoration sites and we get paid for those driving times!#it all comes down to corporations not giving a shit about their employees lives#pls dont try n dox me there are a ton of areas near DC like mine#so its harder than you'd think#but yea ive seen some crazy fucking traffic and commute times#corporations should invest in their communities instead of acting like fucking parasites#remote work#return to office#commute#labor rights#id love if sustainable city experts n economists chimed in#sustainability#sustainable cities#local economy#community

Language Apps Suck, Now What?: A Guide to Actually Becoming "Fluent"
The much requested sequel to my DL post that was promised almost a year ago.
I'm going to address all of the techniques that have helped me in my language learning journeys. Since 95% of these came from the fact that in a past language learning mistake, they are titled as my mistakes (and how I would/did things differently going forward). For those that read to the bottom there is a "best universal resources" list.
Disclaimers:
"Fluency" is hard to define and everyone has their own goals. So for the purpose of this post, "fluency" will be defined as "your personal mastery target of the language".
If you just want to pick up a bit of a language to not sound like a total foreigner on vacation or just exchange a few words in a friend's native language, feel free to ignore what doesn't apply, but maybe something here could help make it a little easier.
This is based on my own personal experience and (some) research.
Mistake 1: Asymmetrical Studying
Assuming you don't just want to do a single activity in a language, or are learning a language like ASL, a language requires 4 parts to be studied: Speaking, Listening, Writing, Reading. While these have overlap, you can't learn speaking from reading, or even learn speaking from just listening. One of my first Chinese teachers told me how he would listen to the textbook dialogues while he was biking to classes and it helped him. I took this information, thought "Yeah that's an idea, but sounds boring" and now regret not taking his advice nearly every day.
I think a lot of us find methods we enjoy to study (mine was reading) and assume that if we just do that method more ™ it will eventually help us in other areas (sometimes it does, but that's only sometimes). Find a method that works for you for each area of study, even better find more than one method since we use these skills in a variety of manners! I can understand a TV program pretty well since I have a lot of context clues and body language to fill in any gaps of understanding, but taking a phone call is much harder—the audio is rougher, there's no body language to read, and since most Chinese programs have hard coded subtitles, no subtitles to fall back on either. If I were to compare the number of hours I spent reading in Chinese to (actively) training my listening? Probably a ratio of 100 to 1. When I started to learn Korean, the first thing I did was find a variety of listening resources for my level.
Fix: Find a variety of study methods that challenge all aspects of the language in different ways.
A variety of methods will help you develop a more well-rounded level of mastery, and probably help you keep from getting bored. Which is important because...
Mistake 2: Inconsistent Studying
If there is one positive to a language app, it is the pressure it puts on keeping a streak. Making studying a part of your everyday routine is the best thing you can do. I benefited a lot from taking a college language course since I had a dedicated time to study and practice Chinese 5 days out of the week (and homework usually filled the other two). Memorization is a huge part of language learning, and stopping and starting is terrible for memorization. When I was in elementary school, we had Spanish maybe a couple times a month. Looking back, it seems like it was the first class to be cut if we needed to catch up on a more important course. Needless to say, I can't even speak Spanish at an elementary level.
However, I'm sure many people reading this don't have the time to do ultra-immersion 4-hour study sessions every day either. Find what days during the week you have time to focus on learning new vocab and grammar, and use the rest of the week to review. This can be done on your commute to school/work, while you do the dishes, or as a part of your morning/evening routine. Making this as realistic as possible will help you actually succeed in making this a habit. (Check this out for how to set realistic study goals)
Fix: Study regularly (ideally daily) by setting realistic goals. Avoid "binge" studying since remembering requires consistent repetition to be most effective.
Mistake 3: Resource Choice
This is really composed of two mistakes, but I have a good example that will cover them both.
First, finding resources that are at or slightly above your level is the most important thing. Easy resources will not challenge you enough and difficult resources will overwhelm you. The ideal is n+1, with n as what you know plus 1 new thing.
Second, getting distracted by fancy, new technology. Newer isn't always better, and there are often advantages that are lost when we've made technological developments. I often found myself wanting to try out new browser extensions or organizational methods and honestly I would've benefitted from just using that time to study. (Also, you're probably reading this because of my DL post so I don't think it has to be said that AI resources suck.)
A good example of this was my time using Clozemaster. I had actually recommended it when I first started using it since I thought the foundation was really solid. However, after long term use, I found that it just wasn't a good fit. The sentences were often too simple or too long and strange for memorization at higher levels or were too difficult at lower levels. I think that taking my textbook's example sentences from dialogues into something like Anki would've been a far better use of my time (and money) as they were already designed to be at that n+1 level.
Fix: "Vet" your resources—make sure they will actually help you. If something is working for you, then keep using it! You don't always have to upgrade to the newest tool/method.
Mistake 3.5: Classrooms and Textbooks
A .5 since it's not my mistake, but an addendum of caution. I think there is a significant part of the language learning community that views textbooks and classroom learning as the worst possible resource. They are "boring", "outdated", and "ineffective" (ironically one of the most interesting modern language learning methods, ALG, is only done in a classroom setting). Classrooms and textbooks bring back memories of being surrounded by mostly uninterested classmates, minimal priority, and a focus on grades rather than personal achievement (imagine the difference between a class of middle schoolers who were forced to choose a foreign language vs. adult learners who self-selected!) People have used these exact methods, or even "cruder" methods, to successfully learn a language. It all comes down to what works best for you. I specifically recommend textbooks for learning grammar and the plentiful number of dialogues and written passages that can function great as graded readers and listening resources. (Also the distinction made between "a youtube lesson on a grammatical principle" which is totally cool, and "a passage in a grammar textbook" is more one of tone and audio/written than efficacy).
Classrooms can be really great for speaking practice since they can be a lot less intimidating speaking to someone who is also learning while receiving corrections. Speech can be awkward to train on your own (not impossible if you're good at just talking aloud to yourself!), and classrooms can work nicely for this. Homework and class schedules also have built in accountability!
Fix: Explore resources available to you and try to think holistically about your approach. CI+Traditional Methods is my go to "Learning Cocktail"
Mistake 4: Yes, Immersion, But...
I realized this relatively quickly while learning Chinese, but immersion at a level much higher than your current level will do very little for you. What is sometimes left out of those "Just watch anime to learn Japanese" discussions is that you first need to have a chance at understanding what is being said. Choosing materials that are much higher than your level will not teach you the language. It doesn't matter how many times someone at HSK 1 hears “他是甘露之惠,我并无此水可还”, they will not get very far. Actual deduction and learning comes from having enough familiar components to be able to make deductions—something different than guessing. An HSK 1 learner, never having heard the word 老虎 will be able to understand "tiger" if someone says “这是我的老虎” while standing next to a tiger. This is not to say you can never try something more difficult—things should be challenging—but if you can't make heads or tails of what's being said, then it's time to find something a bit easier. If mistake 2 is about the type of method, this is about the level. If you wouldn't give a kindergartener The Great Gatsby to learn how to read, why would you watch Full Metal Alchemist to start learning a language?
Side note: Interesting video here on the Comprehensible Input hypothesis and how it relates to neurodivergence.
Fix: Immerse yourself in appropriate content for your level. It's called comprehensible input for a reason.
Mistake 5: On Translation
I work as a translator, so do you really think I'm going to say translation is all bad? Of course not. It's a separate skill that can be added on to the basic skills, but is really only required if you are A. someone who is an intermediary between two languages (say you have to translate for a spouse or family member) or B. It is your job/hobby. In the context of sitting down and learning, it can be harmful. I think my brain often goes to translation too often because that's how I used to learn. Trying to unlearn that is difficult because, well, what do people even mean when they say "don't translate"? They mean when someone says "thank you", you should not go to your primary language and translate "you're welcome" from that. You should train yourself to go to your target language first when you hear the word for "thank you". A very literally translated "thank you" in Chinese "谢谢你" can come off as cold and sarcastic. I don't tell my friends that, I say "谢啦~". Direct translation can take away the difference in culture, grammar, and politeness in a language. If there is a reason you sound awkward while writing and speaking, it's probably because you're imposing your primary language on your target language.
Fix: Try as hard as you can to not work from your primary language into the target language, but to work from the structures, set phrases, and grammar within the target language that you know first.
Mistake 6: The Secret Language Learners Don't Want You To Know...
...is that there is no one easy method. You are not going to learn French while you sleep, or master Korean by doing this one easy trick. Learning a language requires work and dedication, the people that succeed are those that push through the boredom of repetition and failure. The "I learned X in 1 year/month/week/day!" crowd is hiding large asterisks, be it their actual level, the assistance and free time available to them, "well actually I had already studied this for 4 years", or just straight-up lying. Our own journeys in our native tongue were not easy, they required years and years of constant immersion and instruction. While we are now older and wiser people that can make quick connections, we are also burdened with things like "jobs", "house work", "school work", and the digital black hole that is "social media" that take up our time and energy. Everything above is to help make this journey a little bit easier, quicker, and painless, but it will never be magic.
I find that language learning has a lot in common with the fitness community. People will talk about the workout that changed their life and how no other one will do the same—and it really can be the truth that it changed their life and that they feel it is the ultimate way. The real workout that will change your life is the one you're most consistent with, that you enjoy the most. Language learning is just trying to find the brain exercise that you can be the most consistent with.
Fix: Save your energy looking for shortcuts, and do the work, fail, and come back for more. If someone tells you that you can become fluent in a ridiculously short amount of time, they are selling you a fantasy (and likely a product). You get out what you put in.
For those that made it to the end, here are some of my "universal resources":
Refold Method: I don't agree with their actual method 100%, but they've collected a lot of great resources for learning languages. I've found their Chinese and Korean discords to also be really helpful and provided even more resources than what's given in their starter guides.
Language Reactor: Very useful, and have recently added podcasts as a material! The free version is honestly all you need.
Anki: If I do not mention it, the people with 4+ year streaks with a 5K word deck will not let me forget it. It can be used on desktop or on your phone as an app. If you need a replacement for a language learning app, this is one of them. Justin Sung has a lot of great info on how to best utilize Anki (as does Refold). It's not my favorite, but it could be yours!
LingQ: "But I thought you said language apps are bad!" In isolation, yes. Sorry for the clickbait. This one is pretty good, and more interested in immersing you in the language than selling a subscription to allow you to freeze your streak so the number goes up.
Grammar Textbooks: For self-taught learning, these are going to be the best resource since it's focused on the hardest part of the language, and only that. If you're tired of seeing group work activities, look for a textbook that is just on grammar (Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar is my rec for Chinese, and A Guide to Japanese Grammar by Tae Kim is the most common/enthusiastic rec I've heard for Japanese).
Shadowing: Simply repeat what you hear. Matt vs Japan talks about his setup here for optimized shadowing (which you can probably build for a lot cheaper now), but it can also just be you watching a video and pausing to repeat after each sentence or near simultaneously if you're able.
Youtube: Be it "Short Story for Beginners", "How to use X", "250 Essential Phrases", or a GRWM in your target language, Youtube is the best. Sometimes you have to dig to find what works for you, but I imagine there is something for everyone at every level. (Pro tip: People upload textbook audio dialogues often, you don't even have to buy the textbook to be able to learn from it!)
A Friend: Be it a fellow learner, or someone who has already mastered the language, it is easier when you have someone, not only to speak to, but to remind you why you're doing this. I write far more in Chinese because I have friends I can text in Chinese.
Pen and Paper: Study after study, writing on paper continues to be the best method for memorization. Typing or using a pen and tablet still can't compare to traditional methods.
The Replies (Probably): Lots of people were happy to give alternatives for specific languages in the replies of my DL post. The community here is pretty active, so if this post blows up at least 20% of what the last one did, you might be able to find some great stuff in the replies and reblogs.
I wish you all the best~

The thing about Twitter rage bait is the problem being that it’s…. Bait, not that the rage should’nt be there. What happens a lot imho is that people are missing the nuance to understand morally complicated situations, they’re missing the nuance to understand the more lasting structural violence of imperialism and colonialism in which things might not sort into neat categories, so there has to be something simple, easy to define in 140 characters.
Is it infuriating that money had to be spent on flying tourists off Maui when there is a city full of unmarked corpses? Well, yeah, totally. But that’s the reaction to the tourist industry. That’s exactly what can be done about it. That’s the goal- to get tourists off the island so resources can be spent on locals. If you’re not local, if you put the situation into a U.S. mainland geographical situation, then it looks preposterous. Flying TOURISTS on an AIRPLANE while a city smoulders? If you’re local you know intimately that Hawai’i is an archipelago. You know because it defined your life. You know that if you live on a neighbor island - literally anywhere not Oahu- you might have to pay expensive plane tickets to SEE A DOCTOR, seek legal council, commute for work, and access essential government services. You know that there isnt (much) in the way of inexpensive ferries and you must pay into a corporate system of airplane travel that had functional monopoly over all of Hawai’i. You know that you will have to put away money if you even want to visit your family members who live on other islands. Airplane travel is not a luxury but an expense you are structurally forced to pay because there is not another way. And if you can’t - as many many working class locals cannot due to cycles of racialised intergenerational poverty and extreme economic inequality - you pay by not getting to see your family. By not having the money to go to your niece’s communion and your auntie’s funeral and your hanai braddah’s graduation at manoa. That’s why taking Hawai’i politics out of a U.S. mainland geographical frame important. You need to see where the rage is, not the bait, and not blame Hawai’i locals or even local organizations for doing what they need to with the situation at hand.
#I hate interacting with Hawai’i news and politics on here and this is why#The msor surface level rage bate takes on everything#Being so famous but so little known is irritating

My Experience with Operation Groundswell and My Future Plans with Ecotourism - Blog 5
In March 2019, I embarked on an ecotourism trip to Cusco, Peru, with an organization called Operation Groundswell. You may be thinking, you went on this trip in 2019; why are you still bringing it up?! My answer to that is because it honestly shaped my life! I was in my victory lap (or Grade 13) of high school, looking for ways to get out and experience the world. I knew that I needed to revive myself with travel and step outside my comfort zone, and lucky enough, an Instagram ad popped onto my timeline. This ad promoted ecotourism, something I had not heard of, but I was intrigued. After checking out their Instagram page and looking further into their website, I came across the “Peru: Secrets of the Sacred Valley” trip. Before my research, I had never considered travelling to Peru and had minimal knowledge. I calculated the finances, dipped into my savings, purchased some outdoor gear, and decided to explore what Peru had to offer. I would like to recognize the privilege I had to participate in this experience and my ability to purchase the outdoor gear I needed. Without support from family and some fundraisers, this trip would have never been available to me. I am so grateful that this opportunity came to me and that I was able to gain financial support!
After months of fundraising, saving, and picking up extra shifts, I headed to Toronto Pearson Airport for only my second time and set off to Peru with only a backpack! I embraced my family one last time before setting off for my first solo travel experience. From Toronto, I travelled to JFK Airport in New York -> Lima, Peru -> Cusco, Peru, the final destination. The long commute was exhausting, but I was revived once Peru's warm, humid air hit my face. I was picked up by the local ecotourism leader and transported to our hostel to meet the rest of the ecotourism group!
Figure 1. Cusco, Peru. Photographed by: Brigette Matthias.
While on this trip, I was fully immersed in Peruvian culture and learned the history of the Andes! We spent time making our own granola bars out of local ingredients, picking eucalyptus and creating our own essential oils, collaborating with local environmentalist groups to discuss the issues the Indigenous community faced regarding mining injustices, and spent three days hiking through the pristine Sacred Valley. This trip began a strong relationship between myself and the environment, and it guided me to environmental science!
I was unfamiliar with mining injustices and the mining industry's impact on the earth and the people. Many mining companies take advantage of the Indigenous community in Peru and offer them false promises and monetary rewards. The main issue is that the Indigenous people are told they will gain lots of money by selling their land to mining companies, but they often lack financial literacy and knowledge about banking. Therefore, they are left with no land and no money. Mining and resource extraction is a significant industry in Peru, however, these extractions are responsible for polluting the environment and displacing the rightful landowners. This not only happens in Peru, but it happens in Canada, as well. Many injustices facing Indigenous communities in Canada are due to large fossil fuel corporations and their greed to overexploit resources, displace Indigenous communities, and gain profit. Companies such as these have caused many environmental issues and contributed to climate change. Learning about these hardships in Peru led me to further research these environmental problems. It encouraged me to attend school to learn more about how I can play a role in mitigating climate change and ecological extraction.
My trip also allowed me to learn the benefits of medicinal plants and how the knowledge of these plants was passed down for generations. Our group gathered eucalyptus leaves to be prepared for essential oil making, and we watched a local use their equipment to produce natural products. Peruvians have learned to respect the land and Mother Earth, whom they call Pachamama. They appreciate the earth and use medicinal plants to treat illnesses and support their health. They also use plants to produce natural dyes for clothing and textile art, such as bracelets, headbands, hats, and purses. Learning how the colourful Peruvian clothes were made was fascinating, and I am beyond grateful that I got to see this firsthand.
Figure 2: Brigette and Kait in naturally dyed, traditional Peruvian clothing.
A local guide guided us through the Sacred Valley with his dog over three days. He taught us about the native plants and the importance of the valley, led us to a farm that tended to sheep and lived isolated from the cities, and taught us his native language. This was one of the most influential nature interpretation walks I have ever experienced, and I learned so much about Peru! Nature interpretation truly is a vessel and can allow people to feel connected to the earth, nature, and everything it provides. Ecotourism is also an excellent method for eco-conscious tourists. It can allow local environmental groups to receive funding while spreading their knowledge about their work to the rest of the world.
Figure 3: Brigette and local guide in the Sacred Valley, Peru.
I am forever changed by my trip to Peru. I am thankful that Operation Groundswell offers such beautiful ecotourism programs that allow people to experience the world thoroughly and unconventionally. I plan to travel to Guatemala with this organization after completing my undergraduate studies! I recommend this program to anyone with a love for nature, a backpacking enthusiast, or anyone seeking a meaningful and immersive thrill!

What places have you travelled to, and how did your travels impact your lives? I’m looking forward to hearing everyone’s travel memories!

(sorry if your inbox is flooded, no pressure to respond) i'm 20, and about two months on testosterone, and I'm so happy with the changes, happier than I ever thought possible. but god, with everything going on in the USA, it's so difficult to be joyful about my transition. I live with my dad, and while we generally have a good relationship, my transition is starting to freak him out , and our conversations about it are never productive despite my best efforts. im worried I'm going to have to find other housing and it's taking a toll on me. I'm just wondering, how do you find joy despite the world? how do you find hope that it will get better?
I'm so happy for you dude! I'm sorry that things aren't going great with your dad though - I have a distant relationship with my parents, who caused me a lot of trauma over the years, it's not easy and it takes some people a lot of time to adjust and accept change. Some never do. I hope that you can get into a better living situation.
The current climate in the US is alarming and the constant bombardment of bad news can have a nasty impact on mental health. There's a number of ways I've been coping with it and I'll list them under the cut, I hope some of them might be helpful.
Turn off the noise. Being bombarded with bad news on platforms like Twitter or Tumblr can be so overwhelming and can have a huge effect on our well-being. Regulate time spent online, and when you do find yourself scrolling through news, look for ways to take action. Is there a petition to sign, a place to donate your time or skills or a little cash?
Be in nature. I can't stress enough how much of a difference it makes for me to take a walk down a trail in my neighborhood, to listen to birds, to sit on my porch swing during a storm on a summer evening. This can be harder if you live in the city but even just going to a local park or walking the streets for a while can do a lot. Try doing it without your phone on you, or with your phone turned off - leave your headphones at home (at least some of the time). Take in the sights and sounds and smells around you. It can be hugely grounding.
Keep a journal. Especially one in which you write ONE thing each day that you're grateful for, even if that one thing is the same thing every day. Appreciate the small things ("I saw a deer on my commute this morning!" or "I had a really good breakfast today") and make a note of them - and when you're hurting, go back and read about the little moments that made you feel content. The USA is in bad shape right now, but we also have a lot of advantages here too - we have access to many resources and communities that are here to help us.
With that in mind, be a part of your community, if you can. If you're in a position to safely join a local LGBTQ+ group, do it! Volunteer at a local organization that benefits your community. I am a member of the local arts advisory board, I contribute time and design work to the local domestic violence center, I participate in and help organize the annual Pride celebration, serve on multiple LGBTQ+ boards, and I run the local college's QSA. It's hard to do with a full-time career and a comic I want to finish, but it gives me the ability to have a positive impact on people and to see how that affects life right here in my backyard. It's easy to feel hopeless when you're looking at massive global problems that you can't really change, but if every one of us focused on what we can change in our neighborhoods and towns, every community could begin to flourish in some way. Grass roots are the foundation of change.

Benefits of Enrolling Your Child in a Local Otara Preschool
Finding an appropriate preschool for your child to attend is always a big step. In Otara, families get several advantages from enrolling their children in a neighborhood preschool that can help them create the foundation for a lifetime of learning, social development, and belonging.
Community Connection Creative Garden Preschool in Otara allows children and families to engage with their neighbors. When a child attends preschool near his or her home, children get to know each other and this creates friendships that may even go to school levels. Families also develop support systems that enhance the ties that make a community strong.
Cultural Enrichment Otara is a culturally diverse area and many of the local preschools will embrace this in their setting. Most programs include Pasifika, Māori, and other cultural practices in their learning activities, making children proud of their background and teaching them about other cultures as well. It creates principles of understanding and respecting different cultures from the time when children are little.
Tailored Learning Experiences Learning institutions within the Otara region thus tend to serve the needs of families in the region by providing program reflection of the society. From bilingual education to culturally appropriate activities or making sure that their programs are accessible, these preschools know what their neighborhoods want and need.
Convenience for Families Accessibility is a convenience that comes with enrolling in a local preschool. It is helpful to both parents and caregivers who will not spend a lot of time on the roads commuting while children are engaged in more productive activities due to time spent on meaningful journeys. Also, local preschools are flexible with the timings to ensure that they suit working parents for them to take their children to school.
Boosting Early Learning and Social Skills Preschool institutions have a significant function starting students for primary schooling after providing early childhood education and social development. Play-based and inquiry is a common practice in Otara preschools due to the understanding that the children must appreciate creativity; We must solve problems; and work in teams. These skills are essential in the learning and development of an individual.
Supporting Local Initiatives Starting a local preschool is good for Otara’s educational infrastructure and the growth of superior early childhood education institutions. It is especially useful in making sure that resources are retained within the local community hence creating future sustainability of the community.
Transitioning to the Next Level Preschool children who attend preschools in their local area have an easier time when they transfer to nearby primary schools. In addition to that, they feel at ease when encountering peers and educators and the physical surrounding environment as we advance in our education.
Conclusion Selecting a local Otara preschool provides children and families with more than just education; it provides an all-round experience. It is an investment in your child’s future and a way to help create a better and more cohesive society. Todays Technology Effects
Getting the most out of our tech tools Technology is a critical component of our world today. From communication and time management to manufacturing and healthcare, tech tools have an enormous impact on our lives. And for students at UA Grantham, it’s also what allows them to find success in school no matter where they are located.
There’s always a tradeoff, of course, and sometimes it feels like our technology is taking over our lives. Let’s take a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of technology today—and how we can make sure that we’re getting the most out of these tools without falling into some common traps.
The Good Let’s start with the benefits that technology offers us. There is no question that we’re more connected than ever before, which means that most of our family, friends, coworkers, and loved ones are just a text, call, email, or video chat away. Stop and appreciate this for a moment! As difficult as being apart, for any reason, can be, we can still talk in real time with those who matter most.
That also means we don’t have to relinquish many of our routines, no matter what else is going on in the world. Technology allows us to keep working, communicating, going to school, shopping, going to doctor or therapy appointments, playing games, and staying aware of current events.
And it allows us to do so with even more ease: Google’s product suite, for instance, can help you write, format, present, calculate, collaborate, remind, and share all from one platform alone. The resources available today have made it possible to easily learn, share, and create in a truly global environment.
Technology allows students to watch lectures, participate in discussion groups, complete assignments, and earn their degrees from the comfort of their own homes. Online learning platforms make it possible to skip the commute to campus, eliminate the need for exams by mail, and improve efficiency.
The Bad The benefits of technology are genuinely incredible, but there can be too much of a good thing. Our hyperconnectivity means we may have difficulty disconnecting or creating space to unwind. That can lead to feelings of stress or exhaustion and make it harder to truly relax when we need that rest. If you could be working, studying, or catching up all the time, how do you know when to stop? Creating boundaries and promoting mindfulness are critical for giving ourselves the space and time our mental health deserves.
It's also important to be aware of the potential physical consequences from 24/7 connectivity. Eyestrain, hand or wrist pain, and sleep deprivation are common symptoms when spending so much time on our devices or in front of screens. Text neck, Blackberry thumb, and other overuse injuries are becoming increasingly more prevalent, which means it is critical to give your body a break and invest in your long-term health—particularly if you’re spending time on screens for work, entertainment, and school.
Going to school in a digital environment can exacerbate these trends, putting students at added risk for physical injuries even when it feels like a sedentary activity. Look for ways to optimize your study time, which can help you ensure you’re getting the most out of your screen time. UA Grantham offers a host of student support services, including tutoring, advising, and technology help, that can help you avoid spending too much extra time in virtual spaces.
The Ugly Unfortunately, there are even more severe risks out there when so much of our time is spent in virtual spaces. The sense of anonymity we have online, or of feeling slightly removed from the situation when behind a keyboard, can lead to saying things we wouldn’t ordinarily say in a face-to-face situation. Coupled with the ability to share information in record time, this can quickly create uncomfortable and even dangerous situations. It’s important to give yourself mindful space away from virtual environments (and time to process painful feelings when they arise).
The spread of misinformation or outright lies, the prevalence of bullying and cyber attacks, and other unpleasantries are all common side effects of our cyberspace—and they can lead to anxiety, depression, addiction, and other mental health disorders. Social media alone has had a dramatic impact on feelings of self-worth, success, and inclusion and belonging, and those feelings carry into our real worlds. Be cautious about what you consume and avoid taking every piece of information you see at face value.
The Balance As they say, everything in moderation. There are some truly wonderful tools out there, and you don’t have to delete your accounts or throw your computer out the window in order to have a positive relationship with technology. All you really need is to set some healthy boundaries!
Try charging your phone outside the bedroom so it’s not the first thing you look at in the morning. Practice turning off your devices during mealtimes or while exercising. Set time limits for your computer, tablet, or TV. Turn off notifications on your mobile tech so you’re less likely to pick it up as often. Create clear boundaries for when you plan to study and when it’s time to take a break. Consider whether there are some analog tools that help you learn better than their online counterparts, such as taking handwritten notes rather than typing them. Experiment and see what works—and feels—best for you.
Most importantly, check in with yourself regularly to see how you’re feeling. Take a moment to ask yourself: Am I really benefiting from using this piece of technology? Am I using this tool mindfully and how it was intended, or has it taken on a life of its own? Am I getting more out of it than I’m spending—in time, money, or energy? If you’re getting your online degree at UA Grantham, take advantage of your dedicated student advisor’s one-on-one support. They will help you time manage your technology and focus to meet your personal goals.

Saturday Morning Coffee
Good morning from Charlottesville, Virginia! ☕️
It’s been a fun week at work. I’ve been fixing bugs here and there. For some reason I enjoy this type of work. I spent a decent amount of time looking at memory graphs for object retentions problems and fixed a couple of good ones this week. That always feels great!
As for Stream for Mac, I started off the week in a bit of a funk but thanks to some amazing Mac devs I was put back on the right path. Stream for Mac development is moving forward once again. Fingers crossed I can keep up the momentum. 🤞🏼
Nikita Prokopov A.K.A. Tonsky
So all this time I was living under impression that, for example, if the average web page size is 3 MB, then JavaScript bundle should be around 1 MB. Surely content should still take the majority, no?
Some of the examples Nikita gives seem ridiculous. It makes me wonder if backend processing that spits out pure HTML will ever become a thing again?

But Tony Delivers doesn’t need to be anything bigger than it already is, which is one guy on a bike showing up to deliver food, probably smiling, probably asking how you’re doing, a bolt of disarming kindness in a city that even before we all got addicted to screens was known for being standoffish. That seems worth $5.
Tony has become a Seattle hero! I can’t believe he’s able to survive on $5 deliveries but bravo for making your own little niche!
Nish Tahir
I’ve been learning more about common attacks that appear in my Nginx logs to learn more about what happens beyond the log entries.
Nish is geekin’ out again. I wish I had his brain. The things I could accomplish! 🧠

Also, do not worry at this time about acquiring the resources to build the house itself. Your first priority is to develop detailed plans and specifications. Once I approve these plans, however, I would expect the house to be under roof within 48 hours.
This piece is ridiculous in all the best ways. The paragraph I chose to feature really hit home. Yes, yes, take your time. We need it in two days. 🤣

If you like the idea of a perpetual three-day weekend, you might be one of a growing cadre that supports the concept of degrowth: a school of thought aimed at shrinking economies and moving away from GDP growth as a metric of success, while instead emphasizing universal basic services and social well-being.
With the rise of AI companies believe they can replace us with software for many types of work.
I think that’s cool! Let’s replace workers and figure out a way to allow folks to do whatever they want and still receive a paycheck. Like, perhaps, Universal Basic Income, Single Payer health care, and free university for everyone! Of course the rich people won’t like that idea.
Trust me when I say I could find plenty of things to work on.
Michael Szczepanik
It’s time for the NATIVE mobile development to end.
I don’t agree. I’ve been working on a project that involves React Native and I see the value in it, but that doesn’t mean native development should go away. Your mileage may vary. For me it’s native or bust for my personal projects.
Mike Elgan • Computerworld
More to the point: Most companies cannot show actual monetary benefits from RTO mandates. But most employees can show actual and significant monetary costs from RTO mandates.
This is an interesting take on the cost to employees to return to work. I’ve never thought about it in those terms. For me it’s always been about the flexibility working remotely gives me. I save between 40-60 minutes a day by not commuting, I can have afternoon coffee with my wife, and if I need to work late it’s so much easier to stomach because I’m already home.
If WillowTree asked us all to return to the office full time, I would. I just prefer working from home.
Jacob Phillips • Evening Standard
The Kremlin has said it will use its “entire strategic arsenal” and fire nuclear missiles at London, Washington, Berlin and Kyiv if it is made to give up the areas of Ukraine it has invaded.
We need to get our act together and get more aid to Ukraine. The GOP loves their orange American Dictator who, in turn, loves Putin so they’re keeping aid from Ukraine. What happened to all those Patriotic Republicans with their flags and love of all things military? They’re too cowardly to stand up to Trump. It’s really shameful.

Stephen King Hates The Only Movie He Ever Directed
I liked Maximum Overdrive for what it was. It’s a popcorn movie. Get your popcorn, soda, find your seat, and sit back to watch the mayhem unfold. It delivered and I had no idea Stephen King directed it.

Cost Of Corporate Video Production In The UK: Everything You Should Know
One question that is often asked by our customers is, “How much money would a corporate video cost?” The amount of money, time, and resources required to create a film that is tailored to your specific needs and preferences will, of course, have a significant impact on the final product.\
First, we like to take a step back and investigate the question, “Why is it vital for our client’s company to make a corporate video?” Which business goals will it assist in achieving, and how will the accomplishment of those goals benefit the organization? Because of this, we always advise our customers to consider the Return on Investment (ROI) that they will get from purchasing a corporate film.
Balancing Cost and The Production Value
When it comes to the usage of corporate video production in the UK, finding the right balance between the cost of production and distribution and the overall quality of the output has been a challenge for almost as long as this media has been available on the market.
The incredible amount of video material that is generated and shared each day means that its use is no longer restricted to broadcast television and unique settings. Consumers and potential customers may quickly view the movies they want by using their cell phones or other mobile devices, streaming on their televisions, or any of the other available ways.
Naturally, it is possible for anybody to make a movie with a camera that costs less than £600 (or their Smartphone) and submit it to a website in a matter of seconds.
On the other hand, the final quality of such an endeavour is on par with that of a snapshot or selfie snapped at a wedding, in contrast to the archive quality provided by a professional photographer.
The production of a genuinely professional corporate film requires a wide variety of abilities, including knowledge and expertise in areas like writing, narrative, lighting, and editing, among many others.
Each of them contributes a unique aspect to the overall expenses and plays a role in determining how efficient the final product will be.
How To Calculate The Cost Of Video Production In The UK
Time
The amount of money required will increase according to the amount of time spent preparing and shooting as well as the number of individuals participating. On the other hand, the quality of the film and the return on investment are directly proportional to the amount of time that is spent preparing it and the number of people that are engaged in producing it.
Equipment
We are able to shoot with anything from just an iPhone to a whole camera team. Do you desire images that are very detailed and move all over the screen? If flying our drone can help you get the desired results for your video, we will be happy to do so. Because we at Tallboy are aware of how important it is to have the appropriate tools, we take great pains to ensure that we use exactly those tools whenever possible.
The Use Of Animation Or Motion Graphics
Because of the specialized talents that are required to implement these features, the cost will naturally be greater.
Your video might often benefit from motion graphics or animation, even if it consists mostly of live-action footage. Your production value will increase as a result of these features.
The pricing, however, will change depending on whether the movie includes either one of these features or a combination of both of them.
Location Shooting and On-Location Travel
Finding the ideal setting for your movie might be a challenging endeavour to do. It’s possible that your video production team may need to pay someone else to shoot it. This is something that should be expected from a film company.
In addition, the cost of commuting between shooting sites will always increase, regardless of whether it is accomplished by using public transportation or driving a personal vehicle. Because of this, the firm that is producing your film will include this expense in the total cost right from the start.
Duration of Your Video
As is the case with shooting days, it stands to reason that the longer your movie is, the greater the likelihood that it will take more time to produce. This is particularly the case for videos that include live action.
As a result, the duration of your film will inexorably be a factor that contributes to the price of producing the video. These need to be put to use in order to compensate you for the time and effort that went into creating your film.
Professional Development And Storyboarding
These may be expensive, but they are essential if your director is unable to come up with a shot list or figure out a means to communicate effectively with the cinematographer. You can save some money by having kids draw their own, but if you are performing a professional performance, you will want them to seem as polished as possible.
Actors And Artists
Do you work for a union or a non-union company? How many attempts do you anticipate being necessary to complete it? Any last-minute edits? Is the calibre of the performers such that they can hit their marks and have their lines committed to memory? Working with other people brings with it a lot of intangible benefits.
How Much Does A Corporate Video In The UK Cost?
In the year 2022, the cost of producing a corporate film in the UK may range anywhere from £500 to £20,000. The number of filming days and the need for motion graphics or animation are the two primary aspects that contribute to the overall price of a corporate internet video that is two to three minutes long. The price may range anywhere from £1500 to £5000.
Conclusion
It is not appropriate to judge the success of a marketing video based on the coolness of the video’s appearance or the number of awards that it has won. You should only focus on the most important statistic, which is to determine what actual results were achieved for the company.

My constant thought these days is "life is weird". I don't even know how to elaborate on that. This is probably going to be a long rambling nonsensical post. You can read if you want, obviously that's why I put it on here, but I just learned how to put things under the "keep reading" cut. I know, I'm super late 😂 but I don't post on here like I'd like to.
I feel like I've just had so many feelings recently. Today one kind of surprised me because I thought "it's gonna be okay". Like, I tell myself that all the time, because life is a struggle and I need to remind myself to keep going and that things WILL in fact be okay. But today the thought occurred to me subconsciously without me having to force it. So, maybe things will actually be okay.
I've been really struggling financially for a couple months. Well, actually about 7 months, since my mom's income got suspended (she's on SSI). We finally got that resolved last month and it helps a ton, she can pay her own bills now. But my bills are behind because I was helping her AND I chose to go down to one day a week at the hotel. I have been doing door dash and spark deliveries for a few months and those options were pretty stable, but now they aren't as busy as they were. I spend many hours each week waiting for deliveries, and sometimes they just dont come. I've resorted to just leaving bills unpaid or overdrafting my bank account to pay them. When I do that, my bank charges me $36 per day that I'm overdrafted. It's a killer. I had to borrow a large sum of money from one of my good friends yesterday, and it just barely covered the overdraft I had.. I will be able to pay him back, and he's allowing me to pay in payments. Im so thankful for him.
I start my new big-girl hospital job on Monday! I'm excited but nervous. I can't believe it's finally here and happening. I take my NCLEX on the 10th. I haven't been studying like I should because all of every day has been spent doing and waiting for deliveries. My goal for today is to answer 100 review questions, maybe more of I can but AT LEAST 100. I have the resources to do it and today I have the time, I just need to make myself. I'm doing that after I post this.
I'll get my first paycheck and a $6500 sign-on bonus check on the 22nd. I just hope I can hold out on money until then. My commute to work will be ~40 minutes each way, and that takes gas. 5 days a week throughout June. After that I may go down to 3 days a week but that's to be determined.
My mom and I have been bickering about money and bills for weeks. We don't live together and our bills are technically separate but we help each other. If I have money and she needs something paid or needs something, I help her, and vice versa. Sometimes one of us will spend money on something unnecessary and it causes a rift. Because money is so tight right now. I don't feel like I should have to explain where every cent of my money goes, but I understand why she gets frustrated. We are broke. I am so ready for us to not have to share money and bills and to be able to do as I wish with the money I make. That's where my frustration comes in also: most of the money we have to spend is mine. I work 3 jobs right now, soon to be 4. If I want to spend the money I work my ass off for, I can do that. I just have to face the consequences of it sometimes..
I'm still living with my aunt and uncle and since my income will be much higher here soon, the thought of getting my own place has crossed my mind. My mom would like for us to live together. I'm not convinced that's a good idea. I'd love to have my own space and there are things I dislike about living with family. My dad may also potentially be moving here before the year is up. He probably wouldn't have a job immediately so he would either have to stay with my mom (in her living room) or with me in my own place. My mom complains about him constantly when he stays at her apartment. If like to avoid that if possible. I also don't enjoy the thought of having to move houses in the summer, that just sounds terrible. Plus, it would give me a few months to save up for deposits and moving costs.. no plans are set in stone yet, but moving this year is a definite possibility.
I've been trying to get back in the mindset of getting healthy and losing weight. I've stopped drinking sodas again (4 days ago) and am consequently drinking more water. However, I started smoking cigarettes again about 1.5 months ago and haven't kicked the habit yet. I am determined to make this pack the last and wait before I start work on Monday... I think I can do it. I haven't been any more active. My scale still says 266, which is 1 pound less than my high weight. At least it's not more right? I just know I'm going to be miserable working as a nurse being this overweight and out of shape. Part of me wants to try keto again because I know it will make me lose weight fast. But I can never keep up with it, I always quit right after it starts working. I'm still trying to decide what I want to do.. trying to decide what I think I can stick with.
I need to call my storage place and pay for my unit. I need to call and pay a loan. I need to go tomorrow to buy scrubs for work. I need to go study. I think I'll end this post there. I'm sorry if you've read this far 😅 I didn't know where I was going with it lol. I feel like I have lots more to say but I'll continue later.
