Something that’s becoming more and more uncomfortable as people keep comparing Milly and Emma, is the way that the writers seem to almost be encouraging people to make such comparisons in order to cover their own bad writing.
It’s already odd enough how so many people’s preference for Milly often relies on MattMilly shippers, some transphobia, or a lack of understanding about the bad writing that takes over Rhaenyra’s arc post episode 7, but the writers constantly setting up Milly’s Rhaenyra in the Harrenhall - when Emma should and could do so - is just off.
Cause contrary to so many fans opinions, Emma’s Rhaenyra isn’t suffering because of bad acting. It’s due to bad writing, and the loss of an arc as season 1 and 2 continued.
Rhaenyra in episodes 1-5 had a very clear arc:
Lose her mother and fear childbirth - struggle with marriage proposals as she deals with a lack of support from her father - Daemon appears: reignites Rhaenyra’s fire and shows her there’s nothing to be afraid of - Rhaenyra is confident in the life she has to make for herself.
This made for a pretty consistent character, which was why people liked Milly so much. However, once the casting changed, so did the writing - and there doesn’t seem to be much of a reason for it. While the arc at first seems clear and set up to parallel her first arc, it randomly gets dropped by the end of the 8th episode:
Rhaenyra gets beaten down by Alicent’s court and accusations - her father, due to both political and health-related weakness, provides no true support for her position and children - Daemon appears: once again reignites Rhaenyra’s fire and gives her support - Rhaenyra pushes back against the greens in ep 7-8 - |doesn’t happen/gets dropped: Feeding Vaemond’s corpse to Syrax/Rhaenyra’s true Black Council quotes and her determination to take the crown|
Rhaenyra in episode 6-7 was almost perfectly consistent with episodes 1-5. Her act to defend her children and her Valyrian proposal to Daemon was in fact very Episode 3-4 coded. But afterwards, in episode 8 and after, Rhaenyra becomes inconsistent. She forgives Alicent, she’s peaceful and therefore isn’t supposed to have flaws, and doesn’t seem to have any real desires. Someone else seems to be writing Rhaenyra’s character.
Rather than properly understand the bad writing though, fans simply decided to compare their favorite actor/actress. And for some reason, unintentionally or not, the writers seem to encourage this to some degree.
Instead of simply correcting Rhaenyra’s character writing with Emma, they instead cut the amount of screen time they are given, changed almost nothing about their character, and introduced Milly for what simply seems like fan service.
If Milly had simply come in to represent younger Rhaenyra, that would have been fine. But instead, they’re now using her to represent her younger and older self (seen with older Rhaenyra’s dress). Instead of giving Emma and Matt screen time together to build chemistry and build the connection between the two characters, they’ve decided to almost go back to the beginning of season 1. Because they probably know that Milly was preferred, but don’t seem to really bother knowing why (or at least don’t want to change Rhaenyra’s character now, but do want to bring in views). Despite the fact that Milly’s Rhaenyra doesn’t truly affect the war/plot, she’s given just about the exact same amount of screen time as Emma in episode 4.
I don’t think this decision was really intentional, but it’s not great writing and it’s very unfair to Emma when they are now supposed to be representing the protagonist. I love Milly and her acting for Rhaenyra, but if she’s no longer truly affecting the plot, then she shouldn’t have the same amount of time as Emma’s Rhaenyra (especially considering the episode crunch).

Okay so it's a mobile gacha game, let's get that out of the way. BUT LISTEN.
The premise of the story is that the MC is a regular waitress in New York, when a foreign prince and his friends come to her table as a way to have a bachelor party for the prince who will soon have to choose a woman to marry in a The Bachelor -type of contest. MC and the prince hit it off pretty well and one of his friends, Maxwell, decides to throw in his lot with the MC, since the house the future queen is from gets a lot of perks and his family is Broke. MC goes along bc her job sucks ass and she figures why not.
BUT THEN! As the competition progresses, the MC spends a lot of time with the prince and other nobles, yes, but also with Maxwell. And Maxwell is a clown-type comic relief character for most of the time, but also genuinely sweet and considerate, and very much on the same wavelength with the equal goofball MC. What for me personally changed the game was when MC and Maxwell dance at a ball together, and the MC can say that there's no one they'd rather dance with than Maxwell. I myself chose that in a completely platonic bestie way. But he gets a bit panicky and says to be careful not to let anyone hear things like that when MC is in the running for the hand of the prince so that no one gets any wrong ideas! And I went "....ideas? 👀"
“Unlike other romancable characters, Maxwell isn't romancable until book 2 (the previous scene is in book 1, each book ~20 chapters), and unlike other romance options, you really have to have your eyes set on him in order to unlock his route, and ohhh it's so worth it! The set-up of falling for the person who brought you there to marry someone else, to choose the jester when you were meant to have the king.... exquisite.
The dynamic between MC and Maxwell is so fun and full of genuine affection, and while other characters can dismiss Maxwell as an unserious clown, MC is very much characterised by the dialogue as Getting him and loving to express joy in life the same way he does. When MC and Maxwell can finally marry, it feels like they're really choosing their best friend to spend their lives with and are so excited about it.
I know this wrestles in a league multiple times smaller than many of the other combatants, but the Maxwell romance in genuinely one of my favourites in any video game. Give him a chance!”

Hi Froggy,
I hope you've been well! I wanted to reach out and first say that you inspired me many years ago to rescue a corgi! She was a grump, I think she may have taken her name (Elphaba) too literally. She recently crossed the rainbow bridge, but she was such fun and a joy. I hope our pups are playing together, somewhere peaceful.
I have a question unrelated to stumpy Corgis. I'm a veteran birth doula and an aspiring birth photographer! I've been trying to research cameras, lenses, and all sorts of technical stuff. I'm leaving towards purchasing the new Nikon ZF, because of the purported low-light capabilities.
Lenses are throwing me completely.
Do you have any guidance or resources to help a newbie like myself? Not really looking for an in-depth answer (I know how complicated things can get), but maybe a general push in the right direction?

My budget is pretty flexible, since I am an independent contractor the expense would be tallied towards my taxes. But that being said, maybe $1-3k? I know it's important to invest more into lenses!
Usually, I am in a hospital, and lighting is extremely variable. I would be shooting mostly in low-light before baby is born. During delivery and after there is usually a spotlight or fluorescent lighting. The low lighting is exactly why I was looking at the new ZF, but if you have suggestions on that too I'm happy to hear them!
It's very cramped when the baby is born, most medical and support staff are clustered around the laboring person.
Warning! A lot of birth photos will have baby crowning or blood. It's a messy business, so I don't want to trigger you if you're sensitive to those sorts of images.
I will not be able to be directly next to the laboring parent, more than likely I'll be a few feet away, possibly behind the parents or standing on a stool.
After the baby is born, I'll be able to get closer to both parents and baby!

I went way overboard on this response, as usual. I have decided I'm going to break it up into 3 parts.
First, an encyclopedia of lens terminology.
Second, a camera and lens buying guide.
Third, practical advice for shooting in cramped rooms with tricky lighting conditions.
While this will be geared towards the original ask, I think this could be helpful to a lot of people. So, let's learn about lenses!

Lenses throw everybody, just because there are so many options. It can be overwhelming to look at a picture like this and wonder what will suit you best.
It's a lot of pressure too, because lenses are more important than the camera in a lot of ways. Interchangeable lenses are probably the biggest advantage big cameras have over smartphones these days.
But I think I can help get you up to speed.
The following terms are photospeak you might hear in camera and lens reviews and if you aren't familiar with them, it can make it difficult to figure out what camera and lens to purchase.
I tried to put these in an order that makes sense, but some terms relate to other terms and you may have to read the list twice to make sure you understand how everything mushes together.
Froggie's Encyclopedia of Lens Terms
Lens Mount
Every camera has a specific lens mount. Sony calls theirs the E Mount. Nikon has the F Mount (older) and the Z Mount (mirrorless). So you need to make sure the lens you are looking at is compatible with the mount on your camera.
Mirrorless cameras all upgraded to a mount with a "short flange distance." Going without a mirror allows the lenses to be closer to the sensor.
Long story short... Short flange distance = easier lens design = sharper/lighter lenses.
However, if you want to use older DSLR lenses, there are adapters for Nikon and Canon that allow you to do that.
Aperture
"Aperture" is an opening at the front of the lens. It gets bigger to let in more light or smaller to restrict light.
Wider apertures have a shallower depth of field, causing blurry foregrounds and backgrounds outside the plane of focus. Smaller apertures expand the focus area to keep more stuff from being blurry, but they let in much less light and are difficult to use in dark environments.
Aperture can be a creative decision or it can be a technical decision or it can be a mix of both. If you need a blurry background, use a wider aperture. If you need everything in focus, use a smaller aperture. If you need more light in a dark scene, open it up.
F-stop
"F-stop" is a number representing how big the aperture is. A lower number is a bigger hole. Higher number is a smaller hole. It is helpful to memorize f-stops as they are not easily divisible. Cameras generally allow third stops, half stops, and full stops.
These are all a "full stop" apart.
Stop Down/Open Up
When someone says to "stop down" a lens, they are telling you to make the aperture smaller or use a higher f-stop number.
If they say to "open up" they are saying to make the hole bigger or lower the f-stop number.
Depth of Field (DoF)
Depth of field refers to how much of the photo is in focus. Things in front of the plane of focus will get blurrier and blurrier and things behind the plane of focus will get blurrier and blurrier. A shallow depth of field means only a tiny sliver of your image will be in focus. A deep depth of field means almost everything will be in focus.
The wider the aperture, the shallower the depth of field.
The smaller the aperture, the deeper the depth of field.
Focal Plane or Plane of Focus
The focal plane is the sharpest point within the depth of field. You can imagine an imaginary section of 3D space where things within the depth of field are sharp and things outside are blurry. The farther away from the focal plane, the blurrier they will get. But the focal plane is not always dead center of the depth of field.
Typically, at close distances, things will be sharp half in front of where you focused and half behind where you focused. As things get farther away, that changes to more 1/3 in front and 2/3 behind. The ratio changes even more at greater distances, but the 50-50 and 1/3-2/3 ratios are typically what photographers try to remember.
Shallow Depth of Field
The focal plane is something you need to be very aware of at close distances with a wide aperture—as the depth of field can end up as a tiny sliver.
Let's say you are only a few feet away from a baby and you have the aperture set at f/1.2. You focus on the nearest baby eye, and then you notice its ears and nose are out of focus.
The plane of focus and shallow depth of field are causing this issue. This might be a worthy compromise if you are in a dark room and your ISO is very high and you are worried about too much noise.
However, if you can use a flash or some kind of lighting, you can stop down your lens and increase that depth of field around the focal plane.
Bokeh
Bokeh is the quality of the blurriness. Some people are more obsessed with how good the blurry parts of the photo are more so than the in focus parts. Bokeh is typically judged by "bokeh balls" which are just out-of-focus lights in the background. While I like attractive bokeh balls as much as the next photographer, I will admit this is one of the sillier aspects of photography.
Field of View (FoV)/Angle of View
This is how much stuff you can fit in frame at a given distance. Wide angle lenses can fit more stuff in at a shorter distance and telephoto lenses can fill the frame with stuff that is farther away. The focal length of the lens determines the field of view. The focal length is designated by millimeters and the field of view by degrees.
Focal Length
Technically, this is "the distance between the lens's optical center and the camera's sensor."
In simpler terms, this is how you determine the field of view of a given lens.
A short focal length, like 10mm, will have a wider field of view. You have to be very close to your subject to fill the frame with them.
And a longer focal length, like 500mm, will allow you to fill the frame with your subject from farther distances.
Typically all lenses are designated by their focal length. If someone says, "Hand me the 50" they mean a 50mm lens.
35mm Equivalent
Not every camera has the same sized sensor. So when we talk about lenses, we need a reference to help us understand how a given lens will behave. A 50mm f/2.8 lens does not have the same field of view or depth of field when placed on different sensors. So, we need a standard for comparison.
The standard that is used is the "full frame" sensor which is roughly the same size as a 35mm piece of film.
Anything smaller is considered a "cropped sensor."
Those cropped sensor cameras have a "crop factor"—a simple multiplier that helps you understand how lenses compare. And when you use this multiplier it tells you the "35mm equivalent."
Confused yet? Yeah, sorry, it would be easier if camera manufacturers chose metrics that didn't change depending on the sensor, but this allows them to make their cameras and lenses seem more impressive in the marketing.
There are two main cropped sensors for ILCs. (Interchangeable lens cameras.) APS-C and Micro Four Thirds. They have a "crop factor" of 1.5x and 2x respectively. The Micro 4/3 sensor is half the size of Full Frame, therefore it has a 2x crop factor. And when you apply this crop factor to the aperture and focal length you can determine how a lens will behave.
For example, a 50mm f/2.8 lens on a micro 4/3 sensor would behave the same as a 100mm f/5.6 lens on a full frame—as 100mm is 2x 50mm and f/5.6 is 2 stops above f/2.8.
As you can see, the Micro 4/3 lens is not going to do as well in low light. The iPhone boasts an aperture of f/1.8 on its main lens, but when you figure out the 35mm equivalent, it's more like an f/8 lens.
I went to all the effort to explain this because it demonstrates that larger sensors allow you to work in cramped spaces with less light. If you want to use a 50mm in a hospital room, you probably can on a full frame. But on a Micro 4/3 you might need to be out in the hall because your lens is acting like it is 100mm. So the Zf would be a good choice in this regard.
Camera Shake
This is the bad kind of blurry. Humans are not tripods, so when you are handholding a lens, you need to make sure your shutter speed is fast enough to freeze the action of your image. Camera shake is very easy to control on wide angle lenses and very difficult to manage with telephoto lenses.
Reciprocal Rule
The reciprocal rule states that in order to get sharp photos without blurry camera shake, you must set your shutter speed to 1 over twice the focal length of your lens. So if you have a 100mm lens, you need to set your shutter speed at 1/200 to be safe.
This rule breaks down at a shutter speed of 1/50 if there is anything moving in your image. So if a dog is running or a car is driving by, it will have a motion trail, but at least it won't be due to your shaky hands.
Image Stabilization
This is a feature some lenses have that helps reduce camera shake. Image stabilization can counteract shaky hands and let you get sharp photos with a much slower shutter speed. Newer cameras have sensor stabilization which does the same thing. And if you pair up a stabilized sensor with a stabilized lens, it is almost as effective as using a tripod.
Stabilization is measured in stops. You might hear a lens has 4 stops of stabilization. That means you can handhold the lens and not get camera shake with a shutter speed 4 stops below the reciprocal rule. So for that 100mm lens, that 1/200 becomes roughly 1/12. And if your sensor has 4 stops, you could handhold a shot for nearly a second without any shake.
However, at shutter speeds that slow, if anything in the frame is moving, they will probably have motion blur. But for still life scenes, or maybe a sleeping baby, this can be very handy if you don't have a tripod with you.
If being able to handhold at lower shutter speeds seems important, then you might want to seek out a lens with stabilization and pair it to a camera with sensor stabilization for maximum stable-osity.
Lens Compression
Lens compression is kind of a myth, but I think we still call it compression because it is easier to explain to beginners than optical physics. The lens doesn't really compress anything, it's actually a matter of distance and the aforementioned physics. But I'm going to go with the easy explanation for now.
Lens compression is a phenomenon seen with different focal lengths. If you take a photo with a 500mm lens, the background will seem to compress with the foreground. Thus objects in the background will seem much larger in size.
This also happens with faces.
Wider lenses exaggerate distance. At 10mm, the lens would only be a few inches away from someone's face.
From the lens's point of view, the ears are several times farther away from the lens than the tip of the nose. So the lens is like, "Your ears are really far away! And far away things are really small, right?" So the lens gives us a big nose and small ears and makes us look a bit alien.
But at 100mm, the lens will be several yards away.
From this perspective, the lens feels like your ears and your nose are nearly the same distance away. And the lens is now like, "Things that are the same distance away do not get bigger or smaller." The lens seems to compress or flatten the face, causing a more flattering appearance in the image.
Minimum focus distance
This is sometimes called the working distance. This is how close you can get to your subject while maintaining focus. If you get too close, your camera will just hunt and freak out perpetually until you back up and it can lock on again. This isn't always advertised prominently for lenses, so you need to make sure the lens will be able to focus in the space you plan to use it.
Extension Tubes
Sometimes called "macro extension tubes." These are spacers you put between your camera and lens to decrease the minimum focus distance. In some cases you can even turn a normal lens into a macro lens. These tubes are able to stack and the more you put on, the more into the macro realm you can go. They come in smart and dumb versions. The dumb ones require you to manual focus whereas the smart ones can still use the autofocus system. I highly recommend the smart ones, as they are not too much more expensive.
Lens Imperfections
There are a few imperfections that can plague all lenses and their quality is sometimes judged by how well they mitigate those imperfections. Here are some of those attributes.
Lens Distortion
As lenses get wider, they allow a larger field of view by accepting light rays that are coming from the side of your lens. Let's look at this image again.
Your lens then has to correct those rays and send them to a square, flat sensor. If you look at the 180 degree fisheye, that entire arc has to be flattened and made square. And as good as optical engineering has become, the wider the lens, the harder it is to keep the image from distorting.
This is typically called "barrel distortion." Minor distortion can actually be corrected in editing software. Every lens has correction algorithms. Though sometimes it is best to embrace the distortion, like on a fisheye lens. Make the distortion a feature and not a bug.
Chromatic Aberration
This is the fancy name for color fringing. This is a defect in the lens that cause false colors to contaminate certain objects in a photo. Typically this happens around dark skinny things against a bright background, such as tree branches.
Modern lenses have nearly eliminated this, except for the super cheap models, but if you do end up with fringing, this can be easily corrected in Lightroom or Photoshop. And many lenses even have that correction built in and all you have to do is check a box.
Sharpness
You might not think of sharpness as an optical flaw, but no lens is perfectly sharp. And the quest to make a perfectly sharp lens involves engineering those optical flaws to a minimum.
A "sharp lens" is one with incredible fidelity. Even zoomed in beyond 100%, sharp lenses will show great detail. If you can't get close to the subject and need to crop your photo later, having a sharp lens can make up for the loss in resolution—as you can upscale without much loss in quality. If you plan to make large high quality prints, a sharp lens will help more than tons of megapixels.
That said, if you truly want to get the most out of a high megapixel camera, a sharp lens comes in handy here too. A smartphone may boast in the marketing as having 200 megapixels, but it has a tiny plastic lens. So even though it technically has 200 megapixels on the sensor, the lens will give it the equivalent of maybe 8-10 megapixels worth of detail. People forget, the lens has a resolution as well, and if the lens cannot resolve 200 megapixels, you aren't going to get a 200 megapixel image.
A sharp lens will allow for more detail than higher megapixels. In some cases you need to double or triple the number of pixels to see an increase in detail. Whereas you can put a super sharp lens on a 12 megapixel camera and blow any smartphone out of the water.
And if you put a sharp lens on a 50 megapixel camera, you can almost see into skin pores.
So... sharp = more detail. And more detail gives you greater cropping power for when you can't get close to babies.
Now, I am obligated to say that some photo nerds chase sharpness as if it is some holy grail. They need the sharpest lens so all of their pixels are perfect at 100% zoom even though no one ever looks at an image that close. There are amazing photos that have been blurry. There are amazing photos taken with 50 year old vintage glass. Sharpness is just another tool. If you need to crop. If you need to upscale. If you need to print large... it is a great help. But nearly every lens made for a modern mirrorless camera is "sharp" to some degree.
So, if you need extra sharpness for certain situations, do your research and find a lens that is sharp as can be. But sharpness should be like 8th on the list of priorities.
Soft Lens
A "soft" lens is how a non-sharp lens is referred to. Most modern optics for mirrorless cameras have some degree of sharposity.
Sharpitude.
Sharp...ness.
So you don't need to worry too much about getting a detrimentally soft lens unless you go super duper budget. This is why I usually recommend people skip the "kit lens" unless they absolutely can't afford anything better.
Though sometimes people purposely get vintage lenses because they don't like sharpness and prefer the "character" of older lenses. The imperfections can achieve a different artistic goal. Though this can also be achieved through lens filters... or Vaseline.
I'm looking at you, Barbara Walters.
Sharpness at the Corners
When I read that in my head just now I said it the same way I do "Panic! at the Disco."
Engineers will prioritize sharpness at the center of the lens since that is where most of the interesting stuff tends to be. But also, the light rays at the center tend to be the most parallel as they head to the sensor, so they don't need as much correction. The rays coming from the sides have to be bent and manipulated to correct for distortion, so keeping things sharp at the corners can be a challenge.
Now, knowing that, and knowing how the aperture works, you can infer that when you stop down your lens and make the hole smaller, all of the light rays are constricted to a smaller area. This makes them easier for your lens to deal with, so if a lens has problems with corner sharpness, you can usually stop down to improve this. So if a lens is soft at the corners at f/1.8, you might be able to go to f/2 or f/4 to get better results.
Vignetting
Vignetting is a circular area of darkness at the perimeter of your photo. This is another side effect caused by the same things as soft corners. When correcting those non-parallel light rays, it causes them to travel an ever so slightly farther distance getting to your sensor. And the inverse square law tells us that light becomes dimmer as it travels longer distances.
This is very easy to correct. Usually your camera has a setting to correct vignetting if you are outputting JPEG files. And if you are shooting RAW photos, your editing software should have a check box to fix the vignetting—usually the same one that fixes chromatic aberration. This is usually called "lens correction" in most menus.
Also, same as with corner sharpness, stopping down your lens will usually fix this optically rather than with software algorithms.
Contrast
Contrast is probably the most important attribute to determine lens quality. Good contrast can make a soft lens look good. But lens contrast is not always consistent. It can get better or worse depending on the lighting in your scene.
The best way to test the contrast of a lens is to take a picture of something that is backlit. A person with the sun behind them is a great indicator. If they have no light on them, the person should fall into inky darkness. But if a lens has poor contrast, they will seem like a faded gray.
Focus Breathing
Focus breathing is a phenomenon where your focal length changes depending on how far away your subject is. It's usually not a big deal and most people don't even notice it, but if you ever do video, it can cause a few headaches. Some people can get annoyed because they feel they aren't getting the advertised focal length on the lens they bought. Like, if you get a 300mm lens and it only goes to 250mm for things super far away, that can be annoying.

Lens Types
Prime Lens
A "prime lens" has a fixed focal length and cannot be zoomed. Typically prime lenses are "faster" (wider max aperture) and sharper. Weirdly they can be very inexpensive or the most expensive. They can be extremely lightweight or weigh a ton. And if you want the sharpest lens possible or the fastest lens possible or both, it will be expensive and heavy.
Having at least one fast prime is usually recommended for any professional photographer.
Zoom Lens
A "zoom lens" allows you to zoom. Obviously. But there are few that go below an aperture of f/2.8, so less light gathering and you sacrifice a bit of sharpness. However, if you don't know how much space you will have to work with, the flexibility of a zoom can be invaluable.
Be warned, while a cheap prime lens can still take fairly good photos, cheap zooms are usually pretty terrible. There are plenty of reasonably priced zoom lenses to choose from, but if the price seems too good to be true, I would trust that intinct.
Wide Angle Lens
A "wide angle lens" is any focal length below 35mm. Wider focal lengths allow you to get more stuff in the photo at shorter distances. A theme you might notice with photography is that every benefit has a compromise or consequence to go with it. Wide angle lenses are wonderful if you are in a cramped space. They also make it easy to keep everything in focus. But as you go wider, distances become exaggerated and barrel distortion becomes more pronounced and harder to correct.
Things that are close to the lens seem huge and things farther away seem tiny. One trick to remember is things in the center of the frame will be less affected by distortion. Something to take into account when taking those smartphone selfies.
If you look, the ball looks huge in frame because it was only a few inches from the lens. Otis was literally smaller in frame than the ball despite only being about 2 feet away. However, he doesn't look all stretchy like the ball because he is centered.
Standard Lens
A "standard" or "normal lens" represents about the same field of view as the human eye. Generally around 40mm to 55mm on a full frame camera (there is some debate on this, but close enough). This is right about where you can take pictures of faces without the unflattering side effects of wide angle.
Telephoto Lens
A "telephoto lens" allows you to stand farther away and still fill the frame with your subject. Usually lenses 200mm and above are considered telephoto. These are often heavy and expensive.
Specialty Lenses
Ultrawide
This is just an extremely wide angle lens. At this point, you just except the massive amounts of distortion and embrace it. These lenses are extremely fun.
Medium Telephoto
These are sometimes called "portrait" lenses as well. They are a little more tele than standard and not quite tele enough for long distance photography. Usually in the 70-200mm range. This is the focal range that allows you to still be close to your subject but you are far enough away to get extra flattering lens compression on faces.
Superzoom Lens
A "superzoom" has an extremely large focal range. It can go from very wide to very telephoto. These are usually not wonderful lenses, although they have improved on mirrorless cameras in recent years. There are a few that could even be used professionally now. But most are just a huge mediocre compromise for vacation pix.
The cheap ones aren't fast, they aren't sharp, and every time you zoom people think your camera is having an erection.
If you are traveling and you have no idea what you might be photographing and carrying around a bunch of lenses is impractical, these have utility. But the larger the focal range, the more mediocre they get. Typically if the zoom range exceeds ~150mm you will start noticing that mediocrity. So a 70-200mm can be fantastic. But an 18-300mm will be very mid.
Macro
A macro lens is any lens that has 1x or more magnification. 1x magnification is a designation that relates the sensor size to how much of the subject fills the frame of your image. For 1x, that ratio should be 1:1.
So if you imagine a quarter lying on top of an image sensor, that's how big the quarter should be in your photo. 2x magnification would be like if a quarter doubled in size and you laid it on top of the image sensor. And so on.
Beware of lenses claiming to be macro and really only having a short working distance. 0.5x is not macro, but is sometimes advertised as so.
Tilt Shift Lens
This is a very niche lens. Most people know of it from the photos that make everyone look like they are in a miniature land.
For every other lens, the focal plane is perpendicular. If you move the camera at an angle, the focal plane will match that movement. So what the tilt shift lens allows you to do is angle the focal plane so your depth of field goes in bonkers directions.
Product photographers love this because you can take a photo of an array of products from a 45 degree angle and keep everything in focus.
This image would be impossible to maintain complete focus of all the objects without a tilt shift lens.
In this example, without tilting the lens, the tip of the multitool is out of focus.
And now you can see the camera hasn't moved, but the lens is at a steeper angle. And you'll also notice the entire tool is in focus.
But wait, there's more! Did you forget about the shifting? Architectual photographers can use the shift function of the lens to correct perspective distortion and keep buildings looking straight.
Will this lens help in the photographing of infants?
Probably not.
But I bet you thought it was cool and are glad I included it.
Recommended Essential Lenses
I didn't know what to call this section. These are just the collection of lenses most photographers will try to acquire as they build out their kit.
Nifty Fifty
This is probably the first lens everyone should buy. Almost every brand has their own version. It is an inexpensive 50mm lens with a sub f/2 aperture. Canon's Nifty Fifty or "Plastic Fantastic" is probably the most famous example. It is only $125 and has an f/1.8 aperture.
This lens may not be the sharpest and it might have a lot of plastic-y, cheap feeling parts, but it is a wonderful way to get started with photography. You can use the wide aperture to experiment with bokeh and shallow depth of field. And the 50mm focal length is probably one of the most versatile. Not too wide, so people look normal, and not too tele, so you aren't a mile away from your subjects.
The Holy Trinity
The "Holy Trinity" is meant to describe the 3 lenses that can handle nearly every photographic task while maintaining professional quality results. Typically these lenses are all f/2.8 and are high quality zoom lenses. The 16-35mm, the 24-70mm, and the 70-200mm.
Most photographers can accomplish just about any task with these lenses in their bag.
Froggie's Holy Hexagon
That said, if I had an unlimited budget I would actually have 6 lenses to cover everything. Beyond the Holy Trinity, I would get a fast prime, an ultrawide, and a macro lens.
A fast prime can see in the dark and has more background blur. The nifty fifty would work great for this.
An ultrawide is one of the most fun lenses you will ever use, even if it distorts everything to a crazy degree and isn't useful very often. It is great for breaking you out of photographic ruts and can really get the creative juices flowing.
And a macro lens is not just useful for making tiny things big. It also allows you to focus at any distance. Sometimes you just need to get a tad bit closer than your other lenses will allow. Macro lenses are also pretty great portrait lenses and can serve multiple functions.
And if anyone is interested in sports or wildlife photos, a nice telephoto lens might be a seventh lens to consider.

ATE Capital Route and Revenge Motivation
Okay so, after listening to the albums for the Mean Girls Broadway musical and the Heathers musical (West End cast), I came to the realization that since there are different ways to define "revenge", I should probably define it more clearly in the case of ATE and the capital route, especially for those who are concerned about the revenge motivation in this route.
If after reading this, some of you still feel apprehensive about going through the capital route, then I advise you to put off reading ATE, at least until after the capital route is finished. You can then read the asks that I will be answering about what happens since my answers will definitely be much clearer than what I can give now without spoiling and explaining all my current plans for the route, then decide from there if you are still interested in going through the route. If, even after gaining a better feel for how the route will go through the future asks, you do not feel comfortable going through the route, then please do not force yourself through the discomfort :<
There will be spoilers ahead for the capital route, as this is the only way I can provide a concrete explanation.
The opportunity for revenge that Ædric will offer MC is a chance to take the throne with him. This does NOT include the intention to cause Ædan and Helene bodily harm through acts of violence that may result in serious injuries.
Throughout the capital route, MC & Ædric will both have scenes where they put Ædan and Helene in their place (like when MC talks back to Helene in their first interaction in Chapter 1).
There may be opportunities to punch or slap Ædan and/or Helene, but this is as far as the violence that MC, Ædric, and anyone acting under Ædric's and/or MC's orders can inflict upon them will go.
Ædan and Helene will be alive at the end of ATE. The only injury that Ædan will have at the end that has been caused by MC and/or Ædric is a bruised cheek. Ædan and Helene may be injured at the end, but aside from the bruised cheek I mentioned, none of the injuries they may have at that point will have been caused by MC and/or Ædric's actions.
Neither Ædric nor MC will engage in sabotage, as there will be no need; Ædan and Helene are enough to sabotage themselves (~karmic retribution~).
The "desire for revenge" in the capital route is the "desire to get even" with Ædan and Helene by taking the titles of Crown Prince and Crown Consort away from them. This is the main motivation that capital MC will have as I write them. As of now, I am not quite sure about whether it may diminish in intensity as you go through the route, as well as if it can drop to 0%, as the capital route is still very much a work in progress.
I hope that this has given everyone who read through this a better idea of what to expect from the capital route! I especially hope that this helps those who had reservations about the revenge motivation in the route; whether you guys decide to stick around or drop ATE, I am grateful for the support that you guys have had for ATE and I wish you all the best.

The Lost Daughter {Horizon Zero Dawn}
Hello my lovies! I wanted to give you a different type of story about Aloy from the video game Horizon Zero Dawn. Thank you lovies for taking the time to read this story and thank you for all your love and support! Stay awesome :3 The storyline was provided by @tim-ribbert-56, make sure to give them a follow! :3 {{The story is that Aloy is requested from a family to find their young daughter in the wilderness. The reason is that her father is a very boastful man who makes up tales about fighting giant creatures in order to teach their kids to be good people however their daughter ended believing the stories so much that she ended up going out alone so she could prove herself to be brave like her dad soon aloy has to save the little girl before the giant monster ends up killing her}}
After Aloy had left Mother’s Heart, she had never felt such freedom. Not only has becoming a seeker allowed her to venture farther than she could, but it allowed her to explore the outside world that she was never able to see.
“Okay, need to test this override first….those striders look good.”
Quickly and quietly as possible, she slid into some bushes, grabbing her spear that had the override module on and held it in her right hand. “Okay, here goes nothing” she whispered to herself and quickly crouch walked over to one potential candidate. Getting herself ready, she jabbed the override module against it, orange lights spiraling around the module and gradually turning blue, an indication that it was overriding the strider.
“It’s okay buddy, I’m almost done” Aloy cooed to it, until she was able to finally override the strider, the upper metal cords of its body turning completely blue. “Ha, it worked!” she laughed contently, putting her spear behind her back and then jumping on top of it.
“Okay how do I-ah, got it” Aloy smiled as she grabbed the blue metal cords (using it as if it were reins) and proceeded to slap it, the strider neighing loudly and galloping forward. “Woah you’re a fast one huh!” Aloy laughed as she tried to stabilize herself on the strider.
Once she got adjusted, she looked at the view before her, it was a sight that she never wanted to forget. Aloy breathed a sigh of relief and happiness at the sense of the cool winter breeze pushing through her locks of hair. Suddenly, she had reached the Main Embrace Gate, her eyes blinded by a sight of havoc and destruction. “What happened?” Aloy questioned in curiosity as she jumped off her strider to approach Varl who had just taken down a deranged machine.
Varl, quickly taking down the last remaining machines, turned around to see the outcast jump off of a machine. “Were you just riding that machine?” he questioned in shock.
“Yes, but that’s not what’s more important, are you all okay?”
“Yes, we are fine, we managed to take these corrupted machines down.” “But wait, aren’t you the outcast who won the Proving?” “So you survived your wounds.”
“Yes I am, High Matriarch Teersa said you might know the way to Meridian?”
“The capital of the Carja Sundom? You seek exile?”
“No, a traitor named Olin. The Matriarchs made me a Seeker so I could go after him.”
“Huh…then you should head north to Mother’s crown, if you make it talk to Marea, she’ll point the way.”
“If I make it?” Aloy repeated back to Varl, offended by his disbelief that she wouldn’t make it that far.
“The trail is dangerous, ever since the War Party massacre, our lands go unpatrolled, and our borders unguarded.” “We have no War-Chief to lead us.”
“Isn’t that Resh’s job?”
“Phleh, only because Sona went missing. I’d go after her myself, but she ordered me to hold this gate with my life, and so I have.”
“You said the War Party was massacred, how?” Aloy curiously asked.
“When word came of the attack at the Proving, War-Chief Sona assembled a War Party to give chase.” “But in their haste to get vengeance, some braves broke rank and raced ahead…straight into a trap.” “A pack of crazed machines, seething with corruption, fell upon the braves and….savaged them.” “War-Chief Sona led a counter charge and destroyed the machines…but by then, the killers were gone, And our losses were…extreme” Varl spoke lowly, still filled with anger and sadness at the passing of his sister.
“Yeah….I’m sorry about Vala…she was a great warrior….” Aloy spoke softly, hoping that her condolence could bring some form of peace to him.
“Thank you.”
“You also said War-Chief Sona is missing?”
“Even when the War Party was massacred, she wouldn’t give up the chase. She call for volunteers and went after the killers.”
“You didn’t volunteer?”
“OF course I did, but Sona…..denied me that. She ordered me to see the wounded back to the Embrace…..and to guard this gate---to guard the Embrace---with my life. That was days ago, and since then, there’s been no word from her.”
“So there’s no way to know if she’s alive or dead?”
“If anyone could survive out there, it would be her. Sona’s prowess is legend. An unbending spear to measure ourselves against.”
“Sounds like she sets a high standard.”
“Oh you have no idea. She’s my mother” Varl chuckled in anguish.
“You said the trail is dangerous. What sort of dangers?”
“Almost too many to name. The killers are still out there, and somehow they’ve corrupted the machines--spreading madness!”
“Yes, I’ve seen it myself.”
“Bandits, too. Cut-throats who snuck across the border to prey on us. Word is, there’s a camp in the metal ruins upriver.”
“Sounds like I need to craft more arrows.”
“I should be on my way” Aloy nodded to Varl, turning around to head over to her strider.
“Aloy…before you make the journey to Mother’s crown and beyond…is there any chance you could search for Sona?” “The Tribe needs her leadership. I’d go after her myself, if she hadn’t commanded me to hold this gate at all costs.”
“Where was she last seen?”
“The War Party massacre site. A wooded hollow across from Devil’s Thirst, on this side of the river.” “You might be able to pick up her trail there. She went after the killers who attacked the Proving, who killed those we love, who tried to kill you….”.
“I get it, Varl. I’ll see what I can do.”
Fully turning around once again, she sprinted towards her strider and jumped on it, her strider beginning to gallop past the gate and headed towards the area where Sona was last seen. Although, Aloy’s ears pricked up at two people who were by a tree, one wounded and the other pleading for help. Approaching them slowly, she pulled the reins on her strider and got off, “Hey, I heard you asking for help, everything alright?”
“Please, please you have to help my daughter!” “She went deep into the forest to hunt a demon and I’m afraid she won’t make it!” The woman spoke worriedly; most likely being the mother.
“Slow down, slow down, tell me exactly what happened” Aloy spoke softly to her, raising her hands up gently to calm her down.
“Yes, yes I’m sorry….I just…my husband over here kept telling her lies and making up stories of him fighting great beasts and…my poor Delia believed it!” “Now she wants to go prove herself as a great warrior just like my husband over here and she went after one of the machines that has been plaguing this area for a long time.”
“Honey argh….I only told her those stories…..to…argh….teach her how to be a good person” The man groaned softly as he held his wound.
“Don’t start with me, you filled our daughter’s head with your wild stories and now she has run off to prove herself!”
“Please both of you calm down!” Aloy shouted, causing them both to go quiet. “Are you going to be alright?” She asked the man who was on the ground bleeding.
“Yes, I just….I got attacked by one of those machines and…lost sight of my daughter…please can you find her…” The man pleaded with Aloy.
“Where was she last seen?”
“She went through those trees behind you….and probably went to the machine’s resting area” The mother told Aloy, pointing in the direction where she last saw her daughter enter.
“Okay, I’ll find her” Aloy reassured the two as she jumped up on her strider and headed towards the direction where Delia had gone. “Hmm let me use my focus to see if I can find tracks” she spoke to herself, pressing the side of her temple and then the view of tracks on the ground came into her view. “Got it” she said happily as she slapped the reins on her strider and followed the foot prints. Within a few minutes, she arrived at the end of the tracks, but Delia was nowhere to be found. “Odd, the tracks end here?” “But where-” Aloy went quiet at the sound of fighting in the distance. Quickly as possible, she grabbed her spear, quickly heading in that direction and gasped when she saw Delia fighting a corrupted Sawtooth.
“Argh, come on you demon!” Delia yelled, the sawtooth roaring at her and used its front legs to shove her back.
“Delia!” Aloy shouted as she saw her being thrown into some bushes. Quickly and as lowly as possible, she headed towards her.
“That….beast…” Delia groaned as she held her torso, quickly glancing up at a Nora girl with fiery red hair approaching her. “W-Who are you?” “W-What do you want?” she worriedly spoke.
“Delia, my name is Aloy, your mother and father sent me to look for you and bring you home.”
“Of course they did…they never let me…go out…and show my worth.”
“Deliah, I know how that feels, but-”
“No you don’t!” “You’re just a stranger.” “You don’t know what I have to go through everyday.” “My mother doesn’t let me hunt anything, not even foxes or boars.” “And there goes my father, telling me boastful stories of him hunting great beasts and taking trophies of them…”. “I have to take this sawtooth down…if I don’t….they won’t ever let me go out.”
“Delia…I understand completely…..I was born an outcast.” “I trained day and night to get my body into shape for that Proving.” “I fought hard to be where I am today.” “So….I know how it feels….to want to prove to them that you are someone and that you can be a great hunter.”
“So you know I have to do this” she winced as she sat up a bit from the floor.
“Okay, okay, I get it, but at least let me help you” Aloy pleaded with her.
Delia, slowly nodding at her request, grabbed her bow and arrows, and then stood up from the ground. “Okay, we’ll take it down together.”
Aloy nodded happily at her and then quickly charged towards the corrupted sawtooth who was distracted. “Come on!” she yelled, slashing it with her spear.
The sawtooth roared in anger when it felt something attacking it and then began to charge once again.
From behind, Delia began to shoot fire arrows at its canisters in the back, “Aloy I’m trying to shoot those canisters, make it turn for me!” She called to her.
“On it!” Aloy called back, running in a new direction, the sawtooth turning its whole body to face her.
“Got it, keep it there!” Delia called as Aloy continued to distract it. Delia soon put a fire arrow in her bow, drew the string back, and then fired at one of the canisters. “Aloy, duck!”
With quickness Aloy ducked and rolled to the side, the sawtooth unaware its canister was on fire suddenly went ablaze. Another loud roar came from the belly of this beast as it quickly tried to shake the fire off, but to no avail.
“Good job Delia, try to hit the other one!”
“I got it” Delia nodded as she grabbed another fire arrow from her pack.
“Argh!” Aloy growled as she slashed the sawtooth again, causing a good amount of damage and was leaving it open for another attack by Delia.
Delia then breathed softly, pulling the string that contained her last fire arrow, and waited for the right moment. This was it, her moment to show her family that she wasn’t weak or frail, this was the exact moment where she would bring that corrupted sawtooth’s heart to her mother and father and tell them ‘I am not a little girl anymore and I can go out hunting by myself.’ “Phew, boom” she spoke to herself as she let go of the fire arrow and shot the last canister on that sawtooth’s back, it blowing up instantly, a beautiful sight of fire and metal showering Aloy’s and Delia’s eyes.
“Ha, nice job!” Aloy laughed as she quickly ran over to her and then put a hand on her shoulder. “You okay?”
“Yeah, I’m more than okay, I took down a sawtooth” Delia laughed happily as she pulled her bow onto her back. “Um…do you know how I can harvest its parts?”
“Heh, I can show you how, come on” Aloy gestured for Delia to follow her.
“My love, do you think she’s hurt?!” “What if that…that beast tore her in two and that girl is going to….bring our daughter back in pieces?!!” The mother said worriedly as she paced back in froth in their cozy wooden cabin.
“Argh, I think she’s fine Solai, I know our daughter well….she’s a fighter that one.”
“How could you be so sure Avik?!” Solai shook her head, trying to hold back the tears that were already filling her eyes.
“Mother, father, I’m home!” Delia laughed as she opened the door to their cabin, allowing for Aloy to step inside.
Solai quickly rushed towards Delia, grabbing her face and checking to see if she had any scars, bruises, or cuts. “Oh my Delia, are you okay?” “Oh thank you, thank you for bringing our daughter home” Solai sniffled as she looked over at Aloy thankfully.
“No need to thank me, she’s a tough fighter” Aloy chuckled.
“Tough fighter?” Solai questioned curiously, pulling away from her daughter to see her blackened hands that contained the very same corrupted sawtooth heart that had been plaguing this area for a long time.
“You see mother, I can fight, you don’t need to keep me here locked up while our father goes out to hunt, I can go” Delia said proudly as she set the heart on the table beside her.
“That’s my girl!” Avik shouted from the other room, having heard the entire conversation, he was overjoyed and proud that his daughter was able to take down such an enormous beast.
Delia laughed as she pushed past her overly protective mother to tell her father the story of how she took down the sawtooth with Aloy.
“Uh, you should let her hunt, she’s a great warrior” Aloy tried to reason with Delia’s mother, hoping that she would open her eyes and be less overbearing.
“B-But what if…what if she gets hurt and…I can’t save her?”
“Well then you should go with her, hunt with her, or let her father hunt with her.” “She may be young, but with a little help, I assure you, she will be the best hunter you have ever seen.”
Solai, glancing back at her daughter laughing and retelling the story with her father, brought a happy smile to her face. Maybe this Nora was right, maybe it was time for her daughter to finally go out hunting. Even if her father over exaggerated most of the stories he told, they could still attempt to take down less dangerous machines, and maybe work up to the more dangerous ones. “Maybe you’re right, thank you, here take this as thanks for bringing my daughter home and….bringing us closer together.”
Aloy smiled as she accepted the gift, “Stay safe” she nodded and then exited the cabin, glad that she could bring a family closer together and help a growing warrior.
“Okay, now to Sona.”

I want to take the time to remember the late Isaac Hayes, soul music singer, songwriter, musician, arranger, score composer, actor, and of course the voice of Chef, who would have turned 82 yesterday.
Where do I even begin with this man? One of the principal songwriters, musicians, and producers for so much of Stax Records' heyday, co-writing several hits for the likes of Sam & Dave with Dave Porter as well as contributing organ, piano, saxophone, and horn arrangements to several records and becoming a critical figure in Southern soul in the process.
He would then went on to cut solo records of his own like Hot Buttered Soul, Black Moses, and the soundtracks for films like Shaft and Tough Guys, on top of headlining the iconic Wattstax Festival. In a time when soul music was largely driven by the three to four minute singles to crossover to the pop charts, Isaac crafted soul epics that demanded the listener's attention. Rather it be through originals or reinterpretations of others' songs, any song Isaac sang was instantly his. Besides pioneering progressive soul, Isaac would also foreshadow the rise of hip hop with his series of monologues known as "Ike's Rap".
Having grown up in poverty and having been friends with people such as Dr. King, Isaac always sought to not only deliver words of empowerment for black people but also make the world a better place. As the co-founder of the Black Knights, Isaac helped fight police brutality and discrimination, and would also establish food banks within Memphis and help black voters get registered. He would also establish the Isaac Hayes Foundation in 1999 to assist vulnerable populations in realizing their fullest potential in areas such as health care, economics, and environmental and human development. As an Ambassador for the World Literacy Crusade, Isaac would be crowned an honorary king of Ghana's Ada district for his work in supporting literacy. It was also in Ghana that Isaac opened a school designed to link African children with those in American inner cities through the internet.
So when two guys in Colorado were creating a show and came up with the idea of a soul singing school cafeteria chef, Isaac ended up being just what the doctor ordered. Beyond the credibility of having an actual soul singer voice the character, Isaac gave Chef so much more beyond that. Rather it be the wacky, surreal Kid's-Show-Gone-Amok or the greater emphasis on social commentary, Chef provided a strong anchor to the madness that surrounded him. He was the rock that the boys could always fall back on, the confidant when things go awry. Through Isaac, Chef had humor, joy, warmth, conviction, and ultimately, love. And that is both of their greatest legacies above all else.

My favourite thing when anons want to stir trouble is that like, inevitably they have consistent misspelling habits which mean you know exactly who it is sending repeat asks. So unself-aware.
Anyway, I do think there is a balanced path between the text and what the author says. GRRM's comments about Sansa are about as light as they could come. I love when people want to ungenerously frame the debate as if she's tantamount to Tyrian or Daenerys, come on. Girl took a steak knife to see a drunken knight in the godswood. The most harm she's going to inflict is driving Jon crazy with the incest. I'm trying to be lighthearted here.
Anyway, Rouka, what's your opinion on author vs. text? How much is too much, relying on the former? On the other hand, with the Daenerys is a tragic hero fandom, there's a lot of outright twisting of the text. Does relying on the author's comments provide some clarity or just make the conversation harder, since one would want to reason based on the text? Thank you for your time and your graceful handling of us terrible anons 🥰

For me, the actual text of the books should always be central when it comes to actually analyzing the books. (You know. Obviously.) Interviews can be nice, but should be absolutely optional to any of it. If you NEED an interview to support your position, you're not analyzing the text.
Perhaps I am biased because I can't be bothered to follow GRRM interviews, let alone dig up ancient ones - unless I am feeling especially motivated.
But also, most of the time we don't have a lot of good context for GRRM's quotes. How exactly a question was phrased, what direction the conversation went before it, how distracted or rushed was GRRM when answering, how likely is it he actually managed to get across exactly what he meant, and how easily can it get twisted around? Who edited and published it? Worse, did it go through a translation process?
Take the "Aragorn's Tax Policy" quote that still has people frothing at the mouth. People hear him mention Tolkien and lose all sense of nuance. No, he's not describing how his endgame king will be elected on his tax plan. He's giving context for parts of ADWD. That's it. Still people wail about what an evil hypocrite GRRM supposedly is because Bran was crowned king in the show without a single published treatise on his taxation policy.
Same with some commentary on the show, specifically Dany with Drogo. I've had people in my Inbox arguing for Rhaegar/Lyanna because GRRM is obviously okay with adult men preying on teenaged girls based on that interview. Which... you know, actually read Dany's chapters? Please?
The books, on the other hand, were not blathered out in a hurry. They are not a commentary on a text, they are the text. A labor of many hours of writing, editing, rewriting and more editing. They are complete and fully intentional in their form. They are the message.
So, while I admire how someone who knows what they are doing is able to create a brilliant body of supporting evidence on book content by compiling quotes in a meaningful way, often with good sources and context - looking at you here, @kellyvela - these lovely metas should never be considered necessary to understanding the text, and they should certainly neither replace nor supercede it. They augment the experience of it.
Knowing GRRM approved on the Meereenese Blot essays is nice.
But you don't need to know them, nor what GRRM thinks of them, in order to arrive at the same conclusion.
Knowing GRRM agrees with the statement that "Brienne is Sansa with a sword" is nice.
But you need never have heard of that quote in order to understand the similarities between these two idealistic, dutiful female characters.
He called Tyrion a villain, which is nice.
But you can arrive at that same conclusion by reading the books.
On the other hand, you can take one quote about the Key Five Characters from a decades-old outline that deviates from established plot in multiple significant instances, and then try and justify dismissing the importance of other characters. You just need to ignore the published text in order to do it!
So I just can't take that anon seriously when they gesture wildly at some quote about Sansa while ignoring the way it's entirely contradicted by the actual body of the text.
And if some members of the fandom have a habit of very selectively reading the text then this makes their analysis suspect, so what's really the point of arguing with someone who isn't really interested in analysis in the first place?
If "she burned a slave alive" or "she is ordering her servant to please her sexually" or "she condons torture even while she knows its useless" or "she ordered the murder of children" isn't going to convince them, an interview snippet isn't going to do it, either.

𝗡𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗔 𝗣𝗟𝗢𝗧 𝗕𝗨𝗡𝗡𝗜𝗘𝗦
By the request of my darling @ginevrastilinski-ocs and @dancingsunflowers-ocs (as well as @luucypevensie, though she's already been infodumped to about my newest children), I hereby present to you my new OCs for The Chronicles of Narnia! I might not have their official intro posts up for a little bit, but please still fell free to ask me questions about them!
(Before I get any futher into this, there are a few things I should clarify in order for the lore surrounding these OCs to make sense: 1) my OCs' stories are purely based off of the movie canon because the most I've read of the books is the first chapter of The Magician's Nephew, and 2) I have messed with the canon of the movies like, a lot. For starters, the Pevensies never go back into their world at the end TLTWATW, so they remain the kings and queens of Narnia. For another thing I also completely messed up the timeline so that the Telmarines try to invade and take over shortly after they become the rulers after they've heard about the White Witch's death, and Caspian defects and offers help to the Narnian crown, both because he wants to save himself from his uncle and because he never supported the invasion to begin with - basically, I'm just rewriting most of the story after the first movie to my liking. I'm still figuring out the intricacies of what that's going to mean for certain important events in the last two movies, but for now, on to telling you about the OCs!!)
HEMERA:
— Susan ship.
— Hemera comes from a family of Golden Witches - witches that have mastery over light and heat and solar energy depending on their power level. Her family comes from the same coven that the White Witch used to be a part of, and only a few of them, including Hemera's mother, were able to escape and survive when Jadis killed most of the coven and took over Narnia (yes, I have also very much made up my own Narnian witch lore).
— When Hemera is eleven years old, however, Jadis comes looking for the Golden Witches she missed, killing Hemera's mother, grandmother, great-aunt, and even her human father, and she is sent away to hide, becoming the only Witch besides Jadis left alive in Narnia.
— She spends the next several years in hiding, being sheltered by kind animals or sleeping in forests and being kept safe by the trees, until she hears that the prophesied Daughters of Eve and Sons of Adam have actually arrived in Narnia and are teaming up with Aslan to form an army against the White Witches forces, and she decides to volunteer her magic to help in the fight.
— Her magic isn't actually very strong or focused, however, because she's spent so long barely using it to try and stay safe, so she doesn't do much in the fight. But after Jadis is defeated and the Pevensies are crowned rulers of Narnia, Aslan suggests that they appoint Hemera as the Court Witch - a position rulers of Narnia before Jadis would always have a Witch fill, to help in any battles and provide council on magical matters - promising that he will give her lessons to help her connect more to the Deep Magic and her own powers.
— A hopeless little lesbian who takes one look at Susan with her bow and arrows and pretty much immediately falls in love (it takes Susan a little longer, especially considering the era she comes from, but she gets there).
— Definitely just as much a ray of sunshine as her powers suggest, but also not very good at social interaction since she's spent the majority of her time alone since she was eleven, so she's very impulsive and often just says whatever pops into her head (definitely a perfect contrast to Susan's quieter and planning-inclined nature).
— She and Susan are very much sunshine x sunshine protector.
— Becomes another sister to the rest of the Pevensies; she might have lost one family, but she definitely gained another.
ALARIC RYKER:
— Peter ship.
— A teenage crime lord from Thorn Town, a small city far enough away from Narnia's capital to be mostly spared from Jadis's wrath when she took over Narnia, only having to suffer the eternal cold and the general decline in food rather than the White Witch's cruelty.
— Long before Alaric was born, a smuggling ring called the Shadowy Ravens sprung up in Thorn Town as a response to the lack of resources, stealing from Jadis's soliders and shipments going to the royal palace in order to give them back to members of the community. They began resorting to worse means of getting things as time went on, even killing a few of Jadis's guards, but Jadis never payed them enough mind to take action against them, and the few soliders who did try to get revenge for their comrades were not sucessful.
— Alaric was born a street rat, born to a mother who didn't even know who his father was and who abandoned him when he was a few months old, and he was taken in by the second-in-command of the Shadowy Ravens, who raised him like his own son and taught him everything he knew.
— Alaric eventually rose to second-in-command himself (after doing some less-than-ethical tasks to prove himself) and after both the Ravens' leader and his adoptive father were killed in a scuffle with Jadis's soliders, shortly before the Pevensies came to Narnia, he rose to become the youngest leader the gang had ever had.
— About a year after the Pevensies are crowned kings and queens, when the Telmarines start to invade, Peter approaches Alaric and the Shadowy Ravens, asking for Alaric's help and for soliders to boost their army. He's heard about Alaric's gift for strategy, how despite being so young and constantly underestimated he's managed to take down several more gangs who sprung up in the early days of the Pevensies' rule and tried to steal his territory, and Peter knows his men are strong and trained enough to fight the Telmarines, but loyal enough that they will only join the fight if their leader gives them permission.
— Alaric is pretty reluctant at first - he doesn't exactly have a great amount of trust in any Narnian leaders given how he grew up - but he also figures that not only do the four new kings and queens not seem so bad, but that even if they don't turn out very well then the Telmarines would be worse, so he agrees to lend his strategic knowledge and any of his men who are willing to fight to the cause.
— After the Telmarines are defeated, Peter offers him a position as the new head battle strategist of the Narnian military, and Alaric actually decides he's had enough of being a gang leader, of all the violence and worrying about an entire village full of people depending on him, and accepts it, giving control of the Ravens over to his second but also making sure that the Pevensies set up a new system that will provide extra resources to towns and cities farther away from the capital like Thorn Town. (He also accepts the offer only a little bit because he thinks the new High King is cute and brave and compassionate.)
— It still takes him and Peter a while to get together, mainly because Alaric has big-time trust issues and struggles to let down any of his walls, but once they do they're a surprisingly sweet couple, and the other Pevensies are more than happy to accept Alaric as their new future brother-in-law.
KAI HALLOWS:
— Caspian ship.
— A pirate boy!! He was basically born on the sea, to a former captain of the Narnian Navy (Jadis disbanded most of the military when she took over and replaced them with her own soliders) and his wife. Kai was born on his father's ship, but it was difficult since no one on board really knew how to help a woman giving birth, and his mother died shortly after.
— After his wife's death, Kai's father retreated into the delusion that he was still a respected member of the Narnian military (despite the fact that most of the sea around Narnia was half-frozen and everyone in the surrounding countries were too scared of Jadis to allow his ship to dock in their cities) and ran his ship like a dictator, barely ever giving his crew a break and ignoring his son unless Kai had done something he didn't like, in which case he was yelling at him loud enough for the whole ship to hear. He treated Kai more like an insubordinate member of the crew than his son, and his actual crew did more of a job raising Kai than he did, taking it upon themselves to take care of the boy and raise him right.
— Kai was definitely a troublemaker and a bit of a rogue, always getting into trouble whenever the crew was actually allowed to dock somewhere, whether that was from pickpocketing or pulling some kind of prank on a local solider. Eventually, when he was fourteen, his father became fed up with him and left him, abandoning his son at a market in a city far away from Narnia and setting sail again, despite the protests of everyone on his crew.
— But rather than let that do anything to stop him, Kai located a large abandoned ship in the local harbor, claimed it as his own, and worked odd jobs until he had enough coin to fix it up properly. A few friends he had made in the city decided to sail off with him as the first crew members of the Golden Fish - the chosen name for his new ship - and as they sailed around more and more, getting used to thieving and being pirates in general, they picked up more and more souls looking for adventure, until Kai had himself a proper pirate crew.
— And a few years later, when the White Witch was defeated and ships started coming out of Narnia again, they were able to ramp up their exploits even more, until the Golden Fish and her crew were one of the most notorious names on the high seas.
— They're so well-known, in fact, that when Caspian wants to set sail to try and find seven Telmarine lords that he thinks will have the answer to stopping the green mist that has started to overtake parts of Narnia, High King Peter decides that it would be a good idea to contact the captain of the Golden Fish and offer him a large payment for taking the prince, his two youngest siblings, and their chosen crew along for extra protection.
— Kai agrees, of course - not only will he never say no to adventure or any amount of coin, but he suspects it might be good for his reputation to do business with the High King and not wind up in prison because of it - and he and his crew take the the prince, king, and queen, along with their chosen companions, aboard their ship to set sail on this voyage.
— He and Caspian bond over their father issues at first, but they get closer and closer over the course of the adventure, with Kai bringing Caspian out of the shell he was forced to live in when he was with the Telmarines even more than the Pevensies have over the year he's been with them, and eventually, of course, they fall in love!
— Kai also develops friendships with Lucy and Edmund - he and Edmund bond over being proud bisexuals with no time for hetero bullshit, and he and Lucy are very much badass WLW/MLM solidarity - and even when the voyage is over and they return to Narnia, Peter and Susan take an immediate liking to this boy who's stolen their friend's heart and managed to make him so happy (even if he does get the shovel talk of a lifetime from both of them).
Aaaaand that's it for info on my new Narnia babies!! It might take me a bit to get some proper intro posts for them, but you can still feel free to ask me whatever questions about them you want to!!

An ‘evil’ sex predator who raped two 15-year-old schoolgirls has been jailed for 11 years.
David Berbers, 21, attacked the first teenager several times in London and the second 50 miles away in a park in Hove, East Sussex after contacting her on Instagram.
Detectives believe there may be more victims of Berbers, of Richmond-upon-Thames, and urged anyone with information to come forward.
The initial victim, now 16, contacted Metropolitan Police officers in May 2019 to report Berbers had raped and sexually assaulted her on many occasions between December 2017 and March 2018.
Intelligence records were scanned and uncovered another offence where Berbers was suspected of attacked a girl in Hove.
He had arranged to meet her after communicating on social media.
After suggesting they walk through St Ann’s Well Gardens, he raped her before fleeing the scene, leaving her to seek help from members of the public nearby.
She was supported by medical professionals and specialist police officers, while an urgent investigation was launched.
Berbers, of Byatt Walk, Hampton was identified through his Instagram account and the phone number he used to contact the victim, as well as a detailed description she provided.
Met and colleagues in Sussex Police put together a compelling case against him.
At Kingston Crown Court, a jury convicted Berbers of three counts of rape and he admitted possession of extreme pornography.
When released, he must serve a further three years on licence with the threat that he will be returned to jailed. Berbers also received a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.
Detective Constable Hannah Saunders, of the Met’s public protection unit in south west London, said: “These young women have both been through a terrible ordeal.
“I would like to commend them for their courage and resilience.
“It is because of their testimony that this evil man is now behind bars and I hope this will bring them some closure.
“Unfortunately we cannot be sure there are not more victims who are yet to come forward.
“I would encourage anyone with information to get in touch so we can give you the support you need and investigate any further crimes.
“We take all allegations of this nature very seriously and you will be listened to and supported.”
Kent Police Detective Sergeant Kerri Bartup said: “David Berbers is a predatory offender who has proven time and again to be a danger to women and girls.
“His young victim has shown incredible courage and resilience to first report the offence, and then to support the investigation through to its conclusion.
“I would also like to commend the quick-thinking members of the public who brought her to a place of safety on the day of the incident.”

17th June 1390 saw Alexander Stewart, the Wolf of Badenoch, burn Elgin Cathedral.
I’ve posted about The Wolf of Badenoch and his torching of the Cathedral before, sometimes called the Celtic Attila, or the vilest man in Scottish history, but who was this man and how did he get his reputation?
The Brother of King Robert III, Alexander Stewart, Alisdair Mor mac an Righ,was a man of many names another was Big Alexander, the times in which he lived were barbarous, but even by their standards he stood out, and was feared over a considerable distance.
Throughout his life he was Lord of Badenoch around 1371, Earl of Buchanan and was also his brother’s royal deputy in the north of Scotland. This is where you might have to remember some of my other posts to piece things together, King Robert III was a weak King, before he became monarch he actually had more power and had basically ruled in favour of his father, at sometime he took a kick from a horse and this left him somewhat disabled, he was crowned King in 1390 but his younger brother brother Robert, Earl of Fife was running Scotland- hold on two Roberts!? I hear you say? Well King Robert took the name rather than his birth name, John, which was regarded as an unlucky name for a King, after John Balliol, Tomb of Tabard fame.
So to understand Alexander a we bit,, I think we have to rewind a bit to King David II, Uncle to Robert II, the two though were not the best of friends, in 1368 he and his sons were required by David’s parliament to take an oath that they would keep their undisciplined followers in check—later that year, Robert and Alexander were imprisoned in Loch Leven Castle possibly as a result of these oaths having been broken, I’m not sure how long they were held on the Island Castle but I am sure it must have affected Alexander more than his brother, when David died heirless three years later Robert II took the throne and Alex was formally made Lord of Badenoch on 30 March 1371, by the following year Alexander held crown authority from north Perthshire to the Pentland Firth, so controlled half of Scotland. In 1382 he was created Earl of Buchan, the first person to hold the title since John Comyn.
Alexander Stewart was a vicious, bloodthirsty and brutal character, he abused his power and maintained a rule of terror across much of the Highlands by imprisoning and murdering those who offended him. He was said to be huge in stature with a florid complexion and jet black beard, he accompanied his men on missions to rape and pillage within villages in the surrounding countryside, and was merciless in his actions. He was consequently censured by the King’s Council in 1388. His chief residence was Lochindorb Castle which is situated on an island in Lochindorb, north of Grantown-on-Spey, but he was also associated with Drumin Castle near Glenlivet and Ruthven Castle near Kingussie.
Alexander married the heiress Euphemia de Ross, Countess of Ross in July 1382. The marriage produced no children, for which he blamed on his wife. In 1389 Alexander sought the aid of Alexander Bur, Bishop of Mora to annul the marriage. The Bishop, however supported Euphemia, and ordered him to return to his wife, Alexander reacted by angrily expelling his wife to make way for his mistress, Mariota Athyn, who had already provided him with several children, the Bishop excommunicated Alexander, the monk who came to Lochindorb castle to inform him of his excommunication was thrown into the castle’s water pit vault.
Bishop Bur obtained the support Thomas Dunbar, Sheriff of Inverness and son of the Earl of Moray to provide his protection. In May 1390, Alexander rode to Moray with a large force and brutally sacked the town of Forres. He went on to destroy Pluscarden Abbey, from where he continued to Elgin, arriving on 17 June 1390, he burned much of the town and destroyed Elgin Cathedral, as well as the cathedral, the monastery of the Greyfriars, St Giles parish church and the Hospital of Maison Dieu were all engulfed in flames.
Alexander had to appear at the Church of the Friars Preacher, in Perth in the presence of his brothers, King Robert III and Robert Earl of Fife, and the council-general to plead for forgiveness. Robert III ordered his younger brother to do penance for his crimes and make financial reparations, he then pardoned him.
Some records state the The Wolf of Badenoch died in 1394, although others maintain is was in 1406, when it is believed that he played chess with the devil at Ruthven Castle. Legend has it he was visited by a tall man dressed in black and the pair played through the night, with a storm conjured when the visitor called “check” and “checkmate”. In the morning, the Wolf was found dead in the banqueting hall and his men too found lifeless outside the castle walls
There is a relatively new statue of Alexander Stewart in Elgin, and you have to raise an eyebrow as to why it was ever commissioned, I mean by all accounts the guy was a tyrant..........

Regardless, I'd love to collaborate and improve upon them where we can make it equally enjoyable. Without further delay, I present my brainworms.

I love the idea that he's been so scorned by humanity, so bitter and resentful, that he decides their fates are no longer theirs to control. He embraces a newfound resolve as someone who can reform Earth's society, taking the proverbial reins of by force. He soon trains with purpose; preparing to eliminate all who would pose a threat to his ideals until every target of comparable power are all eliminated. With the Z fighters and allies out of the picture, his vision would begin to manifest with great success. Earth's leaders give up their positions without a fight, appointing Cyto as the planet's one and only King. A crown, and lengthy robes, he certainly looks the part.
While he would see the growth of resistance forces rise, there were legions of humans who had sworn their utmost loyalty, believing in his message for change in a world that was suffering so much without him. To protect everything he cares for, Cyto fights to maintain a new order that prevents further damage to the Earth and his citizens. His armies and supporters grow significantly as he makes his voice known to the world, promising to make a difference that no one else could provide. Anyone who denies his message or attempts to dismantle his position will be killed, invading territories and seizing power without the usage of his own energy. His vision is slowly but surely corrupting, potentially leading to disaster if he's pushed too far.
Maybe someone closer to him sees what's happened over the years? Do they join his conquest, or attempt to convince him that his path is war-torn and bloody? Become his queen? Make it romantic? It sounds dramatic, fun, and vivid. I want a piece of that pie, but would LOVE to collab the idea a bit further for a clearer look at the AU.

Feel it in my bones to dabble into other fandoms without leaving this blog. I'm really into these games and to branch out and build lore for any of my muses in their respective AU's would be very fun in theory, but I think testing would be needed to make this work. Ideally with someone who's already familiar with these series (especially FE) but it's just a thought.

I'll just be outright and say YEAH I do need to play with my bug husband more, but part of the reason I reset the blog was to get a chance for people to essentially talk to a Cell that doesn't have the slightest clue who you are to him, why he should care / be worried, and kinda pick at his strange brain while he's vulnerable to all who speak with him. Honeydew's presence is sometimes necessary as to not just let anyone blow him up in one go, but having 1v1 convos is the way to go. In fairness, even in normal threads, my Cell will probably never be the same memory wise, but it's just even more fun to mess with him when he's PEAK struggling with his identity and repressed fears.

tarnished silver crown
decided to redesign tarnished to better fit the story I'm working on ^-^ honestly I'm pretty happy with how it turned out
more info dump rambling below,
OK so changes wise I turned him to a moose beasteal to better fit the story he's in and his role in it, I also made his eye more just look like another carved bit in his silver to show that it doesn't really work anymore compared to the gold eye that still mostly functions,
I also changed the silver bracelets to a leather band that holds his hook to his arm stump, and what's pretty much a wristwatch but with a compass instead, these two items are very important to him, both because they're gifts from his boyfriends, and the hook is the only hand prosthetic he can really make sense of, (he has no idea how to controll cybernetic limbs, they just don't really work for him)
He is also missing several teeth, both from fights and from scurvy, hook and compass still nag him about remembering to eat fruit so the scurvy incedents won't happen again (tarnished often forgets that he in fact does need to eat and will skip meals without really noticing if he isn't reminded)
I also changed the birth mark on his forehead, it used to be a swirl heart, just like the other royal family members, but over time and magic use the mark warped to more be a broken heart that's supposed to resemble harsh waves, using too much magic tends to warp the body, hence the marks changing, it also caused what is the object veriant of nerve damage in his hand and foot, the magic that animates objects doesn't fully flow properly for him anymore, making his hand and foot feel numb.
Also his mustache is a fake one, he just likes wearing it.
Tarnished crown is the captain of a pirate crew made of escapees and misfits that had nowhere else to go, and he tries to provide them with better lives with what he has, he's in the sort of robin hood pirate section, stealing and plundering from those who he deems already have too much in order to provide to those who actually need it,
Tarnished absolutely loves animals, having had several pets over the years, primarily mouser cats to keep the ship clean of Rodents that may spread disease, plus they help with stress,
Tarnished is obsessed with weaponry, he has several books on different types of weapons as well as quite the armory abored his ship, he's specifically interested in fusion weapons, like dagger guns, halberds, and bladed shields, he's also obsessed with boats, he's fascinated by the different builds and just how they work, also collecting books on different ship types, he absolutely loves when things are made with proper effort and good craftsmanship, looking like they have flare and personality while still funftioning practically, tarnished often ends up rambling on end about his interests to anyone who will listen,
Tarnished has a very hard time with certain mechanical technology and advancements, (he especially struggles when the digital age starts but that's a situation for about 200 to 300 years ahead)) mechanical prosthetics like the ones compass uses tend to confuse him when he tries to use them, he doesn't hate technology, he does think it's cool and is happy that certain things have become easeir for those around him, he just can't wrap his own head around it on his end.
Tarnished is very emotional and very blunt, often making him seem irrational or rude, when things feel overwhelming to him he can't hold back the tears, weather it's positive or negative, if it feels like too much he will get emotional, though he doesn't feel the need to hide it, he's set up a crew environment that's supportive and non judging, they won't be offended if he gets overwhelmed, just like he won't be offended if a crew member is overwhelmed and needs some time.
Tarnished is quick to jump to conclusions and stick with them, even if his conclusion is very wrong, once he's made up his mind it's hard for him to change it, which has led to unnecessary confrontations and wild goosechases.
(Sorry this is long and badly written! I just wanted to note down everything I have so far, very much still a wip but I got attached to my pirate guy, also I did steal a lot of my own traits and some of my dad's when it came to making him, such as the weird emotional situation and unnecessary urge to cry coming from me, and the boat obsession coming from my dad ^-^ ))

Right, here’s a few thoughts and favourite panels etc from Chapter 114. I’d like to say I will come back and talk about it more when the scanlation team releases this chapter but there’s no guarantee that I will have the energy for it so I may as well talk about it now. SPOILERS for the most recent chapter, obviously.
Hilmes reveals his face to the gathered crowd!
(And I’m already having some feelings thanks to the little flashback panel to that young Hilmes and Osroes moment we were shown before. For a little piece of trivia, Arakawa included that flashback in Chapter 20, but in the novels it doesn’t actually come up until the point the manga is at now, where it’s inserted right before Hilmes wakes from his angsty nap on the throne, as if the memory is a dream of a simpler time, a happy moment, and a future without problems.
I like that Arakawa included it earlier, as it’s a good reminder of how young Hilmes was when his whole world got torn apart with his father’s death and the palace fire, so it helps to build sympathy for him, but I also like the poignant contrast between the memory and the reality he wakes to, sat on the throne he has always believed he is destined for.)
Arakawa did a great job of portraying the range of reactions among the citizens in the crowd. The younger ones don’t know who Hilmes is, some are dubious, but it seems clear that once he’s taken his mask off, they believe him. The older woman crying and praising Prince Hilmes for liberating Ecbatana... I wonder if she remembers him?
Lots of emotion visible on people’s faces, including a couple of Hilmes’s soldiers with tears in their eyes; it must be such an overwhelming moment to witness!
Meanwhile, Sam just looks... resolved, I guess? He’s chosen his path and all he can do is remain resolute and offer Hilmes whatever support and counsel that he can in order to guide him to become a good ruler. But you just know he’s already thinking of the problems they’re soon going to face, even as the citizens are cheering.
Sure enough, the fact that the gate is closed is met with some complaints and suspicion, though Sam does his best to offer an explanation that will satisfy, at least for now.
Essentially, Sam is acutely aware that Hilmes’s bloodline alone is not enough to keep the support of the populace. He’s taken the capital, but what now? Can he provide for the populace? How will they react when they find a Parsian army led by Andragoras outside the gates?
(The novel actually has the line: ‘Sam was not very optimistic about the future for himself and Hilmes’ and I just 😭😭😭 because it’s so clear he will stay by Hilmes’s side no matter what now, even if he thinks it likely that they will fail to hold the capital.)
tfw when you go to the treasury and find it totally empty...
...and you realise that Guiscard has stolen everything, including the crown you would have used for your coronation.
Hilmes now starts to have some realisations about the position he’s in, and unease and anger creep in.
(I like seeing more of his face! It’s a different look and it’s taken me a couple of reads of the chapter to get used to it, but it’s so nice to be able to see more of his expressions etc)
A Team Arslan scene follows, where Arslan learns of events regarding the situation in the capital, plus what Guiscard is doing. I’ll talk about this section more when the scanlation is out, I think, but it does tug at my heart a little that even now, Arslan wishes that he could mediate between Hilmes and Andragoras, but it’s impossible.
Hilmes wakes from a night of sleeping on the throne in a bloodstained throne room (oof... can’t be much like his childhood self’s dreams of the future) to find someone lurking in the shadows...
OHHH and my hackles are up
because the person who emerges claims to be Husrab...
...but we know that Husrab is already dead (run over by Andragoras’s cart for betraying Tahamenay)
And suspicious figures lurking in dark corners, well... you can draw your own conclusions about that, but this scene is also slightly different to the novel so without further spoilers, I’ll go into that a bit here. In the novel, Hilmes and Sam are discussing plans for strengthening the city’s defences etc when Husrab requests an audience with Hilmes. In the novels, Hilmes has never met Husrab before and so doesn’t know him. However, Sam has. In the manga, Husrab (the real Husrab...) has served in Hilmes’s household in Ecbatana. Is Hilmes going to notice that the man before him is not who he says he is? Is Sam going to arrive on the scene or not? I’m eagerly anticipating the outcome!

Hundreds of people wrongly convicted in the Post Office scandal are set to have their names cleared under new legislation planned by the government.
The law is expected to come into effect by the end of July and will apply to convictions in England and Wales.
It will apply to convictions meeting specific criteria and is expected to clear the majority of victims.
The government said the possible exoneration of some genuinely guilty of crimes was "a price worth paying".
Between 1999 and 2015, more than 900 sub-postmasters were wrongly prosecuted due to faulty software.
Incorrect information provided by a computer system called Horizon, developed by Japanese firm Fujitsu, meant that sub-postmasters and postmistresses were prosecuted for stealing money.
Many of those convicted went to prison for false accounting and theft. Many were financially ruined.
Some sub-postmasters caught up in the scandal have died or taken their own lives in the intervening years. So far, 102 convictions have been overturned.
Keith Bell had been a sub-postmaster in Stockton-on-Tees since 1985, but like hundreds of others, he started noticing discrepancies in his accounts after Horizon was installed in his branch.
He called Post Office helplines, but was given little support. He spent more than £12,000 of his own money to make up the shortfalls, and eventually delayed some transactions to try to balance the books.
He was convicted of false accounting in 2002 and had to do 200 hours of community service.
He didn't challenge his conviction at the time, as he didn't have the means to take on the Post Office, and he believed he had been at fault.
But now the 75-year-old wants his name cleared and expects his conviction to be quashed.
"I'm relieved they are going to quash all the convictions, which is long overdue," he said in response to the announcement on Thursday. "It's a relief to be able to talk to friends. It's a relief to be able to look people in the eye now."
Post Office scandal: The Horizon saga explained
How do the Post Office scandal compensation schemes work?
The issue was thrust back into the spotlight by an ITV drama, Mr Bates vs the Post Office, earlier this year.
Criticism had said that the process for overturning convictions and getting compensation was far too slow.
There are three main schemes aimed at groups of victims who had different experiences of the scandal - but the schemes have been accused of being long-winded and complicated.
Announcing the plans, Post Office Minister Kevin Hollinrake said the legislation was likely to "exonerate a number of people who were, in fact, guilty of a crime".
But he said: "The government accepts that this is a price worth paying in order to ensure that many innocent people are exonerated."
Some 700 people were prosecuted by the Post Office. Another 283 cases were brought by other agencies including the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Prosecutions by the DWP will not be quashed under the new law.
Mr Hollinrake said the new legislation would overturn all convictions that met certain criteria. It will only cover:
convictions from the Post Office and CPS
"relevant offences", such as theft and false accounting
sub-postmasters and their employees or family members
cases where the offence took place during the time that the Horizon system (and its pilots) was in operation
cases where the convicted person was working in a Post Office that was using the Horizon system software (including relevant pilot schemes)
cases in England and Wales
However, the government said it would work with the Scottish Government and Northern Ireland Executive to ensure their schemes to quash convictions were "compatible with the UK compensation scheme".
Labour MP Kevan Jones said he welcomed news of the legislation but added it was vital that the government set aside enough time for the new law to be passed "as quickly as possible".
"There are some initial key questions that need answering, including whether the Post Office's Capture system counts as a 'pilot' of the Horizon system for the purposes of this bill."
Mr Hollinrake added that he recognised the "constitutional sensitivity" of the planned legislation, but added it did not set a precedent for the future relationship between the government, Parliament and the judiciary.
"The scale and circumstances of this prosecutorial misconduct demands an exceptional response," he said.
"We are keen to ensure that the legislation achieves its goal of bringing prompt justice to all of those who were wrongfully convicted as a result of the scandal, followed by rapid financial redress."
