This 4th of July I’m stealing the patriotism euphoria that’s usually associated with assholes idolizing the worst attributes of this country because fuck ‘em I live here too and remembering the things this country actually got Right is an important exercise when trying to rally anyone to want to defend it in November SO putting my money where my mouth is I’ll start easy and say I really like National Parks!! It’s rad how many of them there are and how they’re actual set up to preserve some of the most beautiful wild areas in our country while still letting people visit to enjoy and experience nature!! (Less important but I love how they put national parks on the quarters I think that’s real fun)

I honestly think that the biggest problem the percy jackson show has, which is basically where the trio manage to figure out everything, such as the lotus casino, crusty's waterbeds, medusa etc is because the showrunners wanted to fit all of these little details and point of the journey into the show to appease all the fans and be different from the movies, but with only 8 episodes and 30-40 mins per episode, they really don't have time to have the trio be tricked by all these things, get into serious danger, then figure it out

I really think the show would benefit from like 5-7 more episodes because the book is too long for the length of show they are making

Oh man I have a TWSBI that my mom got me years ago as a nice gift when I was super into pens but it’s SO HEAVY it literally leaves dents in my fingers when I use it. I ended up using it so little the ink in it dried out completely before I ever finished one barrelful. By far the best and smoothest pen I have tried is the Charlie pen that comes free with a dropper bottle of Noodler’s Ink, but those are not exceptionally versatile pens and you can’t buy them on their own. Do you have any suggestions for super glossy pens that have a bold nib (1.0 mm or wider) and aren’t as heavy as a war medal?? Everywhere I have looked I’ve only found nibs under 0.7 mm it’s super disappointing. I’m considering the Lamy Safari but I don’t know how it compares to JinHao, Pilot, TWSBI, or other pens. Pilot metropolitan was a good size and weight but the nib was so fucking scratchy even after hours of polishing, and it only took cartridges!!!! (I feel strongly that cartridges are a waste of plastic and refillable cartridges do not hold enough to be worth the hassle)

Pen recs for smooth writing bold nib pens would be greatly appreciated!!!

the pilot metropolitan is heavier than the twsbi eco so i can only imagine you must be posting (putting the cap on the back of) the twsbi? i find mine to be too heavy when i do. i just leave the cap on the table while im using it. i dont even have or want a metropolitan cus of how heavy it is so im a little befuddled! i think you're having issues with the weight distribution more than the weight alone?

if you want a bigger capacity, then ones that can be converted to (or already are) eyedropper fill are prob the way to go! the kaweco sport is really lightweight and nice for this as i have recently learned! platinum preppy also has some nice juicy nibs and can be converted to eyedropper fill easily. just make sure to get a gasket for those.

the nicest nib + biggest capacity + most lightweight pen ive used ever is the majohn wancai mini. (it's harder to find now) it may not have a big enough nib size but that thing was butter smooth.

the lamy joy has some really big nib sizes, and lamys are overall some of the lightest fountain pens out there so they're a good choice even with the longer back. if the joy body doesn't look good to you it's super easy to swap nibs with regular lamy safaris so you've got a lot of options there. lamy converters are also a pretty fair size compared to some of the smaller standard ones, but if you're really wanting to avoid carts and converters they're not a great candidate for converting to eyedropper fill what with the big holes.

if i was gonna make a comparison of nibs i'd say that lamys have a bit of feedback compared to twsbi or jinhao, but not bad feedback per se. i hear sailor nibs similarly have non-scratchy feedback. i adore my fine tip lamy for sketching. i may have different tastes when it comes to feedback tho! i've started really liking my oldest twsbi now that it's worn in enough to no longer feel like glass-on-ice like my newer ones do XD

tbh the few pilot pens i've had (all kakunos) have also been difficult! i know the metro is like super popular so maybe they just have a high defect rate or something.

ok listen. i know a lot of people prefer Eluréd and Elurín dying the mortal way and i understand why. however nimloth is my blorbo and i will cheerfully ignore the more impactful version of the story to give her a happier ending rentfree in my brain lives a scenario where the twins are re-embodied along with Nimloth, so Elwing one day opens her door to find her mother (who is now younger than she is) and her brothers (who are the exact same age Elrond and Elros were when she lost them). the potential for angst here is so multilayered. Nimloth trying to raise her kids (who died, which has to come with its own challenges) while the kid she didn't get to raise is right there. Elwing doing her best to help while trying not to see her own twins in them and being constantly afraid she's replacing them. One of them lost her children and kept her husband and vice versa. They both feel so guilty about so many things. They both try not to feel resentful about so many things. They're both so traumatized and trying to hide it because they don't want to put even more on the other (they both think the other had it worse). the messy bittersweetness of it all

My one contribution to the US election discourse is that in the future, I think people of all political affiliations should probably prioritize swaying public opinion more.

I think discussion about using the voting system to push candidates further left, either through voting compromise candidates or through withholding votes to try and force the candidates to listen to their left advocates, are somewhat misguided. In the past the administration has barely budged on many of these issues, so I am skeptical that "push them left" works quite in that manner. However I think part of the reason this is ineffective is that they are aware that for however many people protest it is never going to be an unignorable part of their base.

But people who argue for more direct action face the same problem - any organized movement for non-vote based political change that attempts to oppose the government will need massive popular support if it hopes to succeed. Done by a small minority they will simply be suppressed.

I don't know, I generally find most of this discourse as fundamentally kind of glossing over the fact that a great deal of the US citizenry is opposed to leftist policies. And as someone who supports many of these policies that does depress me. But I think at some point we do have to grapple with the fact that there isn't really a bureaucratic or military way to avoid the problem of 80% of the country being opposed to what we want to do. This is perhaps the root issue here, that we must address. Regardless on if we're discussing electoral or non-electoral solutions I generally think a campaign of educating, convincing, and adjustment to public opinion is a prerequisite to broader change.
