#so hard to find fics for toa IN THE TOA TAG

RRVerse Fandom, Please Hear Me Out...

Message to the wider Riordanverse fandom:

Please correctly tag your fanfics with the correct fandom tags.

I am getting tired of seeing non-Apollo fics cluttering up the Trials of Apollo tag (such as Percy/Annabeth. like. what. they're barely in ToA. why are they there.). If your fanfic does not deal with Apollo, Meg McCaffrey, or the story of ToA or the consequences of it, please do not tag it as such.

I have seen fics tagged as ToA and not even have the MC, Apollo, tagged as part of the cast. So please. I am begging you. Please stop. You have the Percy Jackson & the Olympians - All Media Types, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, AND The Heroes of Olympus tags.

Solangelo writers, you now have the Sun and the Star tag, as well as the All Media Types one. Unless it happens during or alongside something to do with Apollo & his story, please refrain from tagging it as ToA.

And no. I do not think just being Solangelo should qualify all Solangelo fics to be tagged as ToA. If anything, they should be The Sun and The Star tag or even The Heroes of Olympus tag because that's when it all began! However, if, say, it's during The Hidden Oracle or takes place in the ToA timeframe then sure! ToA tag it!

But if it's just like an AU or something that only focuses on Solangelo? Then please don't. It's not ToA then.

This is what the ToA tag looks like btw:

I know, Nico, Will, and Percy are all popular characters, but COME ON. This is Apollo's tag, please give him this! It's so hard to find fics I want to read because it's so cluttered! Apollo's not even in the top three most-tagged characters in his own fandom tag.😒

And look at the gap between the number of fics Apollo's in compared to Percy! A 354 gap! And there's 1,616 gap between Apollo and Nico! And I can say with certainty that not all of those fics Percy - and even Nico and Will - are in are related to ToA.

Meg McCaffrey, the second MC of the series, is not even on the board. And she's a very close second MC.

And trust me. I know a bunch of these fics have nothing to do with ToA. I have scoured the tag many times and have figured that out.

So please, please, please leave The Trials of Apollo tag be unless you are writing for The Trials of Apollo. We are our own fandom and frankly, it's getting annoying having to shuffle through a bunch of fics that have nothing to do with ToA just to find ones we want to read.

Fic authors, it would be such a big help if you could remove the ToA tag from your fic if it doesn't have anything to do with ToA. I know you want your fic to be seen, and use a bunch of tags to do so, but this really inconveniences the ToA fans who just want to read about our favorite loser god and his gremlin adopted sister. ☹️

Tales of Arcadia Halloween Fic recs

Any TOA fans out there looking for something spooky to read around Halloween? Well then this is the the list for you! A compilation of my favorite horror and Halloween themed Tales of Arcadia fics. Some of these are safe for all ages, but some do lean hard into horror, so mind the tags and read with caution.

Arcane Blight @avirxy Do you like horror? Do you like Tales of Arcadia? If the answer is yes to both then stop what you're doing and read this. Takes place in an alternate universe where Jim is the new kid in Arcadia, and he quickly realizes that this innocent looking town has dark secrets lurking beneath the surface. To say any more would ruin a lot of the truly gut punching, jaw dropping twists and turns this story has.

The Changeling Masquerade @earth-ambassador-jim Takes place in the author's changeling Toby au. Shows how exactly changelings celebrate Halloween, but with a sinister twist.

Tear Me In Two (The Moonlight Will Anyway) @avirxy Two words. Werewolf Claire. In a monster hunter au Claire gets a nasty bite from a lycanthrope and the whole group struggles with the consequences. One of my all time favorite pieces of werewolf media for the absolutely phenomenal way it explores what it means to unleash the beast within.

Through the Veil @pinkytoothlesso11 This one's just getting started, but holy hell what a start! Jim doesn't given much credibility to Eli's ramblings of monsters and conspiracies in their town, until he witnesses someone he trusts performing a horrific ritual on Halloween night that brings everything he thought he knew into question. Now Jim and his friends are far from home and lost in a world hostile to human kind, and no guarantee that they'll make it home safe.

Something's wrong with Arcadia @earth-ambassador-jim When Jim and team Trollhunters aren't running around causing problems, what does the average Joe think of the strangeness going on in Arcadia? Bular and goblins and changelings shown from a mundane point of view in a way that's absolutely chilling.

31 Days in the Darklands @xdeusxmachinax Not technically a Halloween story, but takes place near and on Halloween with tons of horror and spooky imagery. I always give it a re-read each spooky season. In the wake of an unconventional treaty Strickler struggles to keep balance between Trollmarket, the Janus order, Arcadia, and the Darklands but the universe seems to sabotage him at each stage, and there's more than just pumpkin spice in the air this year in Arcadia.

Snippets, Snails, and Trollish Tales @whitherwanderyouspirit Some mostly Stricklake centered Halloween one shoots ranging from sweet to spooky to downright terrifying.

The Manor atop the Hill @avirxy A Haunted House story like you've never seen done before. When a desperate and frightened Jim follows his mother into the mysterious mansion on the outskirts of town he finds himself trapped in more ways than one. No one has lived in this house for as long as anyone can remember, but it is far from empty. Forced to rely on ghosts and a mysterious girl, Jim has to keep his wits about him if he wants to escape with his life, and his soul, intact.

well, first off: anything solangelo by @buoyantsaturn who i hope doesn’t mind being bothered tagged. Particularly I know what I should do, but I just can’t walk away and I’m in Hell. Both Modern AUs and both masterpieces!! The first is a College AU that largely focuses on grief and healing, the other an AU where Will has a daughter and hires Nico as a nanny.

As someone who usually prefers canon fics, these were soooo great.

But really, everything I’ve read from this author is well written and captures Nico and Will so well that you can’t go wrong. Pick one and enjoy.

also: like a dog with a bird at your door by RegretfullyRegretful (and anything else by this author too). It’s also a Modern AU (Nico and Will are best friends who marry for convenience) but oh. god. Oh god. Obsessed with it.

Big classic: both with the lights on and will the lights on (same story but told by Will’s PoV) by nikkiRA. This is my comfort fic. I re-read it what? Once every two months? And it hits every single time. It’s a lighthearted College AU for when you need a reminder that love exists. Also Opportunity Knocks, still by nikkiRA. It’s set in canon and it’s about Nico having to relive the same day over and over because he’s been cursed by Aphrodite (u can guess what she wants him to do to break the curse lol).

Anything by Rosyredlipstick!! Particularly the star and the nothing (Nico tries to make a relationship with Will work as he struggles with trauma and alcoholism), Rental Love* (Nico hires Will as a fake boyfriend), and hands cupping sparklers (them getting together in canon while the entire Camp roots for them. It’s HILARIOUS). But really, every single one of their Solangelo AU fics. Some of them are set in canon and some are not, but all are amazing.

As If Hands Were Enough (To Hold An Avalanche Off) by theroyalsavage is also an amazing College AU.

if you need, come build your home in me by yrbeecharmer is a canon fic that follows Will growing up, from his first day at Camp to getting with Nico. It’s great and made me go all 🥰🥰 in my feels.

too much (yet never enough) by significant_what is a masterpiece. AU where Nico and Will meet in Catholic school. I get teary-eyed just thinking about it.

I’m halfway through Sanctuary by Tundras_And_Taigas and it’s pretty great!! Basically it’s set during ToA (but Nico and Will still aren’t a thing) and Will is forced to go live in Nico’s cabin.

and you can check out my fics if you want: Bad Sons (you kinda have to have finished ToA for this one tho) and Made your mark on me (a golden tattoo), but i’m a bit… weird when it comes to shipping. Bad Sons focuses more on Will as a character and his relationship with Apollo (tho plenty of solangelo fluff!!) and Made Your Mark On Me is about cheating, so i don’t know if they could be to your taste. I also don’t presume to think I write as well as the names I’ve given you but I try <33

I consider most of the fics I’ve recced pretty well known by fandom standards so I don’t know if I’ve helped you find anything new, but I hope I did!!

As for random pjo fics I like, I mostly like ToA ones so, lol

The Stolen God by @tsarinatorment is a great one, tho again I’d advice finishing the series to read it.

ToA fics by @flightfoot (Keyseeker on Ao3), particularly Memories of Godly Selfishness (Apollo and Meg are forced to watch some of Apollo’s memories and realizations are realized) and her long series God’s Eye View. I still haven’t had the chance to read the second one but every ToA fan I know has and what can I say, I trust my people.

@moodyseal has some too, my fave is A Spark Of Hope because it’s an obligatory read after TBM.

A) That one is a loose idea I had based off of a post/fanfic I wrote, which was also based off of a post by another user called @sepublic and basically what happens is Vakama traps himself and the Makuta Teridax in a Time Loop and Vakama is able to eventually escape after dying over and over and over and over again. Where the AU takes place is when Teridax takes over the Great Spirit Robot and decides to turn the Turaga back into the Toa Metru and Torture Vakama himself, as a bit of payback because that defeat was EMBARRASSING. To even the odds and make sure he has less to worry about, he also tortures the other Toa

B) This was an ask from @screaming-for-eternally where the Turaga on Mata Nui are MOSTLY healed from the Hordika Venom, but at certain times, like the full moon, they turn into beasts and gurad their respective villages. The Toa Mata/Nuva eventually find out, but the Matoran more or less already know, having been around the Turaga for a while and knowing what happens

well there’s the obvious Dona Eis Requiem by oKathleens which i highly recommend. Hunestly i read so much angst it can be hard to keep track of😅 but i would say that you can definitely go through the ToApril collection to find a lot of short fics, plenty of of them angst. Sadly we don’t have enough to work with in the fandom if you’re like me and have read about 1/2 of the things tagged Apollo (including incorrectly tagged ToA) so i’m not sure if this is that helpful.

What do you like the most about Caleo and what advice could you give me as a newcomer to this fandom, and the limited content that exists? I love Caleo, but I think I've already read all the fanfics that are focused solely on them, of course

´Hello, nonny! You came to the right place (I hope)!

First things first, what do I like about Caleo? Well, it turns out I have a soft spot for enemies/rivals to lovers trope and short as it was, Caleo definitely gave us that in The House of Hades. They didn't have a good start but slowly, as they observed each other doing their work they learned to respect each other so much it eventually turned into romantic attraction. I also enjoy a couple who isn't afraid to bicker at times. And hey, Leo cared about Calypso enough to actually keep his promise to return, even though it meant he had to die first, so I think that's beautiful in its tragedy. Now, when it comes to Caleo in ToA... Well, they both had a lot to learn and I believe their bond gets stronger once they manage to talk it out.

What advice can I give to a newcomer? Well, first of all, stay away from the tumblr Caleo tag and learn to ignore the haters. Even though it seems that a lot of people dislike them these days, there is still a quiet part of the fandom who still care about them. They're not a popular pairing, and we just have to accept it. But if you manage to find your own little Caleo corner with a few people who also enjoy them, then embrace it!

And I know after a while it might be hard to find new fics to read but one way that I myself find pretty good is checking the bookmarks of an author whose work you enjoy (and obviously check if the said author has written more fics of them if you haven't yet). I thought I myself had made a fic rec post but I couldn't find it, but here are some fics that another person has recced a few years ago! For Caleo content on my blog, I rec checking the Caleo tag :)

Honestly I don't think I have one? I like imagining various blorbos together but nothing stands out to me off the top of my head.

I want so badly to finish In search of home, but the motivation....the muse...they are away never to be seen again...

scene setting and character building. Action and dialogue can sometimes feel stilted, but I'm really good at giving the narration a strong voice and making strong, 3D characters :3

pacing and plot. I get lost in the weeds, or I dont go into the metaphorical grass at all, and it's so hard to find that middle ground. Fortunately for fanfic you don't need to worry about pacing quite as much as you would for more traditionally-written stories with a planned beginning middle and end

18.) thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I love it honestly. I threw in some spanish here and there for a bilingual character, and I think it adds some authenticity when you know the language. But if you don't, there's nothing wrong with just writing it in the language you do speak and just indicating that it's in a different language.

19.) first fandom you wrote for?

When I was 9 years old I was introduced to na.ruto and made my first OC. nothing was ever the same.

Although my first FIC fic was a H.arry P.otter fic when I was 11, posted on quizilla. Anyone remember Quizilla? That shit rocked. i loved those interactive fics.

20.) favorite fic you've ever written?

Honestly In Search of Home. It's just fun and silly and feels like a good continuation of my version of the series finale.

Actual Worst part of writing: Writing the first draft. It’s like walking in mud, I swear. It’s all clear and flowing in my mind so why is the actual writing so HARD? (Plus, english is not my mother tongue so, ya know). But I love, love, love writing the next drafts and polishing and polishing and polishing. I love finding the right word, the rare word, the right-sounding word... It’s like finally seeing the garden you were trying to grow :-)

How you choose your titles: I have to confess that I am drawn to hommages. Hommages to past works of fiction or cinema, so my first instinct is to aim for a playful title. For instance, UNDER QARTH’S SHELTERING SKY comes from THE SHELTERING SKY by Paul Bowles and adapted to the screen in 1990 by the amazing Bertolucci. Not his best film, alas, but the atmosphere, the desert location, the perfume of eroticism were so right for my collection of Jorleesi erotica, taking place in Qarth’s jewel desert city! The title just popped in my mind. More recently though, my script-ed @terisrog​ pointed out to me that I also have a fondness for titles evoking the concept of home which, as any Jorleesi fan knows, is central to what binds Ser Jorah and Daenerys in the series. So IN A LIBRARY WITH RED DOORS (which became THE LIBRARY in our discussions), THE KEEP (or The Ghost and Ms Targaryen) for my two real multi-chapter tales.

Do you outline: I don’t. Isn’t that bizarre? Then again, THE KEEP is a remake (of the movie The Ghost and Mrs Muir) so the film’s narrative structure acted as an outline of sorts... but I imploded its story by adding many scenes.

Ideas I probably won’t get to but it would be nice: Ask @terisrog ;-)... More seriously, Jorleesi is sooooo inspiring to me, I think I might continue on and on, so I hope I’ll get many WIPs out... including writing again with @houseofthebear, I hope :-).........  The ideas I won’t get to, I think, have to do with other projects, like finishing the Gladiator AU I began 20 years ago and stopped to have kids. Thankfully that mandate is almost over LOL...

Best writing habits: When I start a new project, I work at it every day. It’s why I don’t have actual WIPs. I mean written WIPs. If people ask me to drop a line from a WIP on Tumblr, I actually have to write something because I don’t have WIP folders. I have WIPs in my head. So, yeah, as soon as I begin writing, I WRITE; many hours each day, and I don’t stop until it’s done.

Spicy opinions: Those who know me know what I am about to write, so feel free to scoot ;-) (Deep breath) I hate, haaaaaaaaate reductive fanfic labels: smut, fluff, angst... OK, I’m slowly making peace with the expression fluff because, yes, fluffy things are cute. But to call a fic “fluff” is such an echo of mainstream bashing of fanfics that I choke on the word. When a regular editor or author labels something “fluff” it is NOT a compliment. But OK, in our world, it’s a positive thing...... The one I truly have a hard time with, and I’ll be on a life-long crusade about it, is “smut”. A synonym for that word is dirt and, I’m sorry, but are we still in a world where sex has to be deemed dirty to be hot and arousing? Sex can be luminous. Explicit erotic fics can be funny, poetic, joyful, dark, romantic, sad and all the while be arousing without having to be termed “smut”. I hate it, I hate it, I. HATE. IT.  So my banner is Erotica, and if that sounds intellectual or pretentious, so be it. (p.s. I’m aware that my peeve stems from cultural differences. I’m not American. I’m not even Anglo-saxon. French literature has long given credentials to erotica so I’m like: hum, we’re not on the same page, are we? ;-)

Hey, so I've been witnessing a lot of hostility between the older and younger generations of PJO/HOO/TOA fandom and I thought it would be nice to address it.

For context, I'm in the older parcel. I was producing content and actively interacting with the Brazilian fandom far back in 2011. I was 13-14 back then, which is the age of a lot of people in fandom now, but a lot was different back then. It was really rare to find someone older than 17 in the fandom.

Time passed, I started to interact with the fandom in English language, but eventually I stopped. The fandom started to become really toxic and I wanted no part in it, so I just kept reading my fanfics in silence, not interacting with anyone.

But the fandom's situation has never been worse. We have a lot of issues, but the one that bothers me the most is the generational clash between the teens and the adults the fandom. I reflected about it, and I think we need to consider some things if we want some peace.

Respect the minors. This is essencial. I see people my age and even older than me fighting with teenagers over fictional characters and ships, and it's honestly the saddest thing to witness. I don't care if you think they're being childish. Even if they are, there are people as young as 13 in this fandom. I'm not saying they're childish, but even if you think they are, the one who's supposed to be mature here is you. You don't have to agree with them, just leave them alone.

Recognize nuance. This one is for both parts. On one side, people need to understand that when you're a teen and you see 20-somethings creating explicit content about characters your age, it's hard to feel safe. So tag your shit. And tag it well. Fanfics, fanarts, even headcanons. It costs nothing to tag your explicit content as nsfw. Yes, even if it's just a paragraph in your fic. I would go as far as to recommend using Read More in these situations, just to be safe.

At the same time, what some teens need to understand is that, since most of us read these books several years ago, these charactere were our age at some point. Since we project in these characters, as we were growing up, we kept projecting on them, even though we are older now. That includes adult stuff like college, relationships, starting families and, for some people, sex. These characters might be still teens in the books, but in our minds they're our age. So when some people make explicit content about these characters, it's not because they're pedophiles who like to imagine teenagers having sex. It's because they keep saying them as equals, like these characters grew up with them.

These things can coexist. Teenagers have the right to feel uncomfortable for being exposed to explicit content about characters their age written by adults, and adults can write and read explicit content by characters they identify with since teens, because they're adults and they can engage with this kind of material, as long it's properly tagged, under Read More and kept out of the minors' way.

Overall, it's pretty easy to be civil. I'm not saying everyone has to be friends, but in a fandom as large as this one, it's so easy to stay in your lane. Follow blogs about characters and ships you like, respect people's opinions and don't go out of your way to cause trouble. It's okay to expose what you think in a respectful way, but we all know how to identify when something starts to escalate. And if you're the adult in the situation, it's you who has the responsability to step back and ask yourself: "Is it really worth it to call someone ten years younger than me names because of a fictional ship in a children's book?" I think the answer will be obvious.

And stop calling teenagers incels for fuck's sake, don't be creepy.

@sad-sweet-cowboah Hope you don’t mind if I start a new post here, I don’t want to prolong the debate by doing this, but I still have some things to say and the other post is getting kind of ridiculous and is hard to reply to due to it’s length.  I’ll quote a few things from the original thread to keep it linked in reply and physically here for posterity.  [...I know it makes me seem suspicious but I have a habit of reading things without saving them, etc...] I appreciate that you wouldn’t keep track like that, who does? However, I can’t see any credit given to HOGO or her work on your blog/story before the original call out drama in 2019? Obviously you may have done that privately, but I know how fandoms work and there’s a lot of mutual backscratching in drama’s like this so it seems impossible to truly validate any of this independently, which is a shame. Perhaps it was my mistake, but when you said you’d been inspired by HOGO’s fics I assumed she’d written a full fic. I can’t find an actual chaptered fan fic following videogame Arthur in modern times from HOGO, and nothing of him in that setting by himself. It all seems to be involving the gang too, which is quite a different dynamic to what occurs in your series and Wish Upon. I can see how it would be difficult to keep track of HOGO’s posts, even if you were trying too, because I can see dozens of drabbles, but nothing as a titled fic you could keep track of.  I can also see why those little scenes and dialogs may have inspired you, but as I said I can’t see any credit for the inspiration as you claimed? Besides which, it’s all kind of a moot point, because I think the bigger issue seems to be less about the initial inspiration and more about the timing and direct comparisons that can be drawn between your series and Wish Upon.  [...I also included the-awkward-outlaw’s series as an example since you mentioned previously that it’s a “very niche” topic when it’s more popular than one would think. ...] Well, yes, it is now, but it wasn’t to begin with. Ever since the onset of this drama, I’ve only seen a tiny handful of attempts at covering Arthur in the modern world in a fic, which still makes it niche when you compare to the volume of repeated themes in Red Dead fics over all.  It was a completely non existent plotline (at least on AO3/FFNET) in October ‘18 through Jan ‘19, and the game had been out for three months already when @miss-oscurita published Wish Upon. Yet no one had stepped up to bring us a story covering the concept of video game Arthur alive in 2018/9.  The reason Wish Upon hooked me personally, was because it was completely different to the numerous “damsel in distress”, “highborn babe”, “tough outlaw chick” that were a dime a dozen. There was also several “modern reader goes back in time” stories too, but Wish Upon was the first incarnation of Arthur coming out of the game into the modern world, in an actual fic at least. No doubt the idea could have been circulating, but no one had actually taken the time to put it into an actual story to my knowledge.   Does that mean Oscurita should hold a monopoly on the idea? Of course not, but it does explain why anything that followed Wish Upon’s publication, including TOA’s recent works, will be bound to draw comparisons simply because Wish Upon was first on the scene to cover the topic, and as a result is likely the most well known version of it.  I think the real issue here isn’t who all’s covered Arthur living in modern times, it’s more the issue over the dynamic where the protag is familiar with him as a character, because the dynamic of the pairing and the story itself changes so much when it’s explored from that angle. The dynamic is also affected when the fic focuses only on the two main characters (as with the gang being in the modern world in HOGO’s concepts) especially when they are both aware he’s fictional that it’s really something that can only be done once, maybe twice at a push. And yes you’d have to be certifiable to believe ideas won’t overlap, I mean it’s going to be a really hollow story if you don’t cover things like Arthur using a microwave, or using a toothbrush and showering for the first time, or learning to drive, discovering movies and what not. However, from what I seen over the course of this matter, it seems the issue with it all lies in how and when these elements are explored in the story. I may be wrong, but I don’t think there’s ever been an issue raised with any other parts of your series beyond that of As We Meet, has there?  And the issues raised over the original instalment and the rewritten piece seemed to be because it essentially follows the exact pattern of Wish Upon’s first few chapters, as we’ve already discussed.

Funny that you should mention discovering lingerie when @miss-oscurita’s most recent update included Arthur discovering modern underwear for the first time. I don’t recall in which of your stories he did that?

Just in the interest of being informed, I searched HOGO’s blog and found a chapter mentioning lingerie (which I assume is the one that inspired you?) but that in itself is a classic example of how the same idea can be done by two different people and still be complete different.

Which I’m sorry to say really only further highlights why the similarities in your opening chapters are such a cause for concern.

Regardless of the inspiration, if we list the similarities we have from the original piece, and the rewrite the issues are pretty clear. 

1) Young female gamer protag.

2) Modern day setting.

3) Both have adopted silver tabby cats.

4) Both have the backdrop of being alone on a stormy night.

5) Both involved with an event that brings Arthur out of the game.

6) Both aware of him as a fictional character before being a flesh and blood man.

4) Both immediately assume him to be an intruder.

5) Both think they are dreaming and pinch themselves.

6) Both use touch as a way to confirm he’s there in the flesh.

7) Both fics use the same name for animals.

8) Both fics almost immediately go on to explore Arthur showering, discovering cellphones, watching TV/movies, using a microwave, in almost the exact same order. 9) Both use some variation of the “my Arthur” device. 

Then in the rewrite you make changes to also include:

10) Both use his horse to confirm he’s ripped straight from the game.

11) Both use extremely similar types of names for the horses. 

12) Both work from home, for one reason or another.   Seeing it written out like that I can more understand why people have red flagged it, as it goes a bit beyond simply exploring the same concept as the likes of HOGO/TAO may be doing.  I mean it was bound to flare things up to include additional similar elements. What I don’t get is, knowing how toxic the fandom is, and that you’re under the microscope over this, why you didn’t take the rewrite as an opportunity to distance yourself from those similarities?  And if I’m brutally frank with you here, it does come across as a bit of “drama farming” when you know the consequences of similarities all too well. And what I still don’t get is how you’ve not managed to move away from these controversies?  I’m a lot of a loser, and have kept an eye on this drama since it began and I have to say when you interjected with the other drama around Wish Upon late last year, that came across to me as looking for drama, or at least being lead to it by someone else somewhere. I don’t know where you got the tip off for that, because the post wasn’t tagged and I only saw it due to following @miss-oscurita/you on my fandom account and the other writer in question was very new to the RDR fandom and likely didn’t have much of a following.  Add that to the poor wording on the announcements of your rewrites and you know, I’m sure it’s innocent on your part, but I can see why it doesn’t look good to others.  I mean I could easily believe you were trying to avoid making the stories similar and accidentally included the horse thing simply because your ideas and the ideas from Wish Upon merged, because unless you’re able to keep them firmly separate in your head it’s going to happen now you know of Wish Upon. If it was me, I’d be doing my best to not give anyone any more reason to throw shit at my house. Instead you’ve somehow managed to do the opposite. The rewrite was a missed opportunity to draw a line under all the past drama, and that’s disappointing to see as a reader and a writer too.  I do hope you manage to sort this all out, and that there’s no further public bashing over it all but now the seal is broken on it all it’ll be very hard to prevent the sharks smelling the tiniest drop of blood in the water.

11. What do you envy in other writers?

For the longest time, I envied stats.  Hit counts, reblogs, and the like.  I got jealous of popular fic writers easily.

I’ve worked hard at moving away from a mentality that equates my writing’s worth with how popular it gets.  That train of thought just doesn’t lead anywhere good imo (there’ll always be someone whose numbers are higher than yours.  also numbers are infinite and, if they’re all you focus on, you’ll never actually be happy no matter what you do).

15. Which is harder: titles or summaries (or tags)?

For me, the difficulty level of it depends on the length of the fic.

For my oneshots, the vast majority are just short scenes that I put together in under an hour, so I haven’t thought too deeply about them.  Because of their short length, and the fact I usually write them simply for the fun of it, it’s difficult to assign them titles or summaries.  They just don’t have enough to them to build something really depthy title off of.

Though, it is easier to add tags to my oneshots because of their length.  Less narrative means less to take into consideration and I can usually pick out the most well-suited tags with relative ease.

For my longer wips, I feel like it’s easier to come up with titles and summaries, because I’m already putting so much thought into them.  I tend to spend a lot of time spitballing ideas until I land on something I think fits.

However, for them, I find tagging much harder, because of how much changes over the course of writing.  With a fic like Souls, for instance, something might come up in a chapter that I haven’t warned for previously (bc I hadn’t considered it before then), so I’ll have to add a new tag for it.  Just, tagging is something that kinda evolves and fluctuates with the fic (to ensure everything is up to date in accuracy).

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

The last chapter of Rose Puppetry is a mess of fairytale references:

Briar’s name is a reference to Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty).  Penny being in a lasting slumber is meant to be a call back to the original fairytale.  HOWEVER, the Sleeping Beauty allusion is also meant to be a nod to how, in Once Upon A Time (In Space), the happy ending happened between Cinders and Briar Rose (the version of the character of Rose who alluded to Sleeping Beauty in the album).

The chapter as a whole is roughly structured after Little Red Riding Hood; a young girl visits an older woman in a cottage separated from everyone else to deliver food, and meets a ‘Wolf’ along the way.  Calling her ‘Little Briar’ in the title was the best way I found to refer to this.

I was disappointed for a while that I couldn’t seem to fit a Pinocchio reference in, but then I figured that Ruby working as a mechanic repairing Penny could function as a callback to how Gepetto originally built Pinocchio.

Finally, it was heavily inspired by a lot of Magnus Archives fics that take place during the Scottish safe house period.

22. Do you reread your old works? How do you feel about them?

With my Tales of Arcadia fics, it’s this weird mix of bittersweet nostalgia and melancholy.  I still love them, I’ll always love them, but I also feel like I have to distance myself from them to not be defined by them.

Since I have such a massive backlog of toa content on my blog from my time in the fandom, I worry sometimes people will get the impression that that’s what I still post about and get disappointed when they find it’s not.  Or they’ll read my old fics, potentially get their hopes up that I’ll post new ones, and then be disappointed that way.

I truly do want people to enjoy my toa fics.  I’m dedicated to keeping them up online so they can be found and read.  There’s a part of me that does regret that I no longer write for toa, but I also know I can’t turn back the clock to be a version of myself that I’m not anymore.

So, to answer the first question, no, I don’t really reread my old works.  I like the idea of revisiting them one day, but not yet.

 1. Why do you write? (ie; what’s your motivation?)

Hmm, probably because I really love to create in as many forms as possible, and writing is a pretty unique form of creating because everyone who reads what I write is going to leave with a different image of a world I was able to create… I dunno I just think it’s neat.

2. Who, of your characters would you want to spend a day with?

Hmmm, I’m gonna do this by universe I think…

ToA fics: Krel, duh. He’s my boy and maybe he could actually teach me how to math.

Real Magic: This one is tough because they’re all my babies but probably Traavohn, he’s fun and an all around good dude.

Valkyrie: Lykke, probably, I adore him and he both could and would take me flying.

Parallax: Mahhi, probably, because they’re a good kid and I want to hug them to death. Also they, too, might be able to teach me how to math.

3. What’s your favorite part of writing?

Worldbuilding and dialogue. Worldbuilding is just so cool, to start with nothing and build up an entire world. It’s so much fun. And dialogue is also very fun, I love seeing characters interact and take on a life of their own.

4. What is one genre and/or trope you despise writing?

Political drama, probably. Like, anything where I have to know shit about politics. In other words, the current book in RM that I’m working on. My own fault.

5. Who are your biggest influences?

Oh, that’s a hard one… I’m not sure, but everything I’ve read and watched has shaped me as a writer, being in a “I hate that and will not write like that” or a “I love that and will try to emulate some of it” kind of way.

6. If your work got a film deal- Animated or Live action?

Animated!! Animation allows for all sorts of unique story-telling devices that live action doesn’t, and there’s so much love put into it… also then I don’t have to worry finding someone who can both act and looks like my characters, and, quite frankly, there’d be a lot of CGI anyway in most of what I write so why not go all out?

7. Are you more of an outline person or write-as-you go person?

I absolutely have to have an outline because if I don’t then weird shit happens like, I dunno, dinosaurs (I’m not kidding). Now, do my characters always listen to the outline? Absolutely not, but I have to have one.

8. What’s the most emotional thing you’ve ever written?

Oof, um… I’ve written a lot of rough scenes, and I’m not sure which I’d call the most emotional. The most emotional thing in the past few months has definitely been a concept scene from Legacies that I hope will rip your hearts out 🙂

9. Would you want to live in the world(s) of your story?

I’d totally live in my ToA fics because, duh, trolls and aliens and wizards and it’s cool. I’d totally live in RM because I modelled elven society almost exactly how I wish society could be so duh. I’d live in the Valkyrie universe as long as I’m not stuck in Kris’s position, I don’t need that kind of responsibility. I’d live in the Parallax universe because, duh, aliens.

10. (and, because I’ve seen most do this)- Any goals for your WIP?

Legacies: Finish and post it? And hopefully get y’all attached and make you cry.

Space Rogues and Morando AU: Finish and post, also.

Real Magic: My New Year’s Resolution was to finish the new covers and get all three books published (right now only two are out) – also my goal for it is that one day people will love it enough to write fanfiction or draw fanart.

Valkyrie: Get it picked up and actually made into a show, and from there I hope people will love it enough to write fics or make art.

Parallax: Same as Valkyrie.

Character studies exploring every available aspect. Found families. People overcoming their differences to come together and people recognizing their similarities through their differences as they come together. Letting things get weird and sticky but finding comfort in that and coming toa  resolution. Domesticity, nonsexual and sexual intimacy, supporting but being willing to call the other out on their bullshit or push them towards something greater. Mutual comfort while unpacking and dealing with trauma; also, coming together to weather a traumatic experience. Well done angst that might seem overwrought, but is worth the light at the end of the tunnel. Character driven fluff and smut. Non, Merci

Scat, watersports, bloodplay, vomit play, vore, rape roleplay, love triangles, character bashing, OTT angst, ageplay, infidelity, pregnancy, whump, kid fic, women being dominated by men, soulmate fic, AU fic, A/B/O dynamics and tropes, descriptions of gore that go beyond the typical canon. Referencing or hinting at abuse, rape, or assault is fine, but I’d rather not see it played out. I’m also not a huge fan of tons of angst or sadness without a happy ending; I like things bittersweet, not full on sour. Also, no human Wardens or Inquisitors, please. I have nothing against them; I just find the other origins more interesting. I have no preference regarding classes. If you’re drawing me porn and you’re an artist, I really don’t like the style where both people look super shiny; I tend to read it as oily or sweaty and it takes me out of the scene.

First person and second person POV also don’t generally work for me as styles and I would prefer you stick to canon. Dagna/Shaper Valta

Talk about rare pairs, am I right? You don’t have to dig much deeper than the Deep Roads for these two. Still, I think there’s something to these two. I found their similarities rather striking; they’re both intelligent, relentless in their pursuit of their work, they see Orzammar for what it is, both of their fathers disagreed with what they chose to do, they don’t have any regrets regarding their decisions, etc. Valta also talked about the Titan in a very similar way to how Dagna talked about the Fade if you let her study the samples from Adamant. I think they’d really hit it off. I would love to see them talking shop or reminiscing about their lives in Orzammar.

Colette/Lace Harding

And the rare pairs get even rarer. Colette is Professor Bram Kenric’s sword wielding city elf assistant you meet in the Jaws of Hakkon DLC who’s attending the University of Orlais. (Here are a couple clips of her; skip to 1:47 for this one.) She’s researching the early Tevinter temple ruins in the Frostback Basin and how they relate to Inquisitor Ameridan. If you chat with her, she’ll tell you about the discrimination she faces as an elf attending an Orlesian university and comments on how elven assistants are common, but get no credit for their research. Professor Kenric is the exception. She’s very driven and determined to succeed in her work and it shows; that’s something she and Lace have in common. Kenric also mentions that Lace has brought artifacts back to camp for them, so I’m sure that she and Colette have at least met before.

I don’t have anything specific in mind, but something that you could have a lot of fun with is a Road to El Dorado style piece with Lace helping Colette search for an artifact in a particular ruin and possibly fighting off some Hakkonites together heroically. Bonus points if they end up having to rescue Professor Kenric and the Chargers show up as the cavalry along with Lace being an adopted Charger.

Dalish/Skinner

Okay, so just hear me out because this prompt's a little convoluted, but it could be hilarious.

So, we know that merchant families in Antiva have their feuds like anyone else. Let's say that for reasons, one of them in particular decides to retaliate by the Montilyets' rise to power by planning to kidnap Yvette. Rather than allow her sister to stay in Val Royeaux or potentially draw the mercenaries to Skyhold, Josephine chooses to take out a contract and have The Bull's Chargers kidnap her instead and take her somewhere safe to watch over her while she investigates the plot and brings the would-be kidnappers to justice.

Contrary to expectations, Yvette is a delight. She takes to the Chargers' lifestyle surprisingly well and it's just the inspiration she needed as an artist to really flourish, except she develops a huge crush on Dalish. At first, it's completely harmless and just a lot of starry eyed wistful gazing and overwrought elvhen motifs in her sketches. Skinner's not happy, but is pacified by The Iron Bull's litany of "you could literally eat her alive, she's practically a baby, we just have to get through this one job and you'll never have to see her again". Then, despite efforts to discourage it, Yvette's crush on Dalish starts getting too big to ignore and on top of all that, her girlfriend shows up.

Who is Yvette's girlfriend? I don't know. Maybe she's a Tal Vashoth pirate who automatically sets Bull on edge, maybe she's a shady apostate with a penchant for blood magic and betrayal, maybe she's a noblewoman from a disgraced house who supposedly goes through young women like tissues. It's up to you! All I ask is all's well that ends well. I want a lighthearted romp, not heavy drama. I've tagged the pairings with Josephine that I prefer most for this piece, but if you'd like to pair her with Vivienne, Sera, or Lace Harding, I wouldn't be opposed. Pentilyet doesn't really do it for me.

Female Inquisitor/Cassandra Pentaghast

Something I feel that the Cassandra romance genuinely missed out on was the possibility of an interfaith relationship between her and the Inquisitor (besides the obvious lack of not being able to romance her with a female character). I would really like to see that explored in fic.

How does she handle a partner with a belief system radically different from hers (Dalish, the Qun, the Stone, Avaar, Chasind, whatever the Vashoth or Tal Vashoth might believe in) or a nonbeliever? How much does the degree of faith affect their relationships? How do the Chantry's views on them get in the way? If her partner's actually considered to be clergy (or was before the Inquisition, such as a Keeper, an augur, a tamassran, etc.), how does she come to terms with that? Does anyone in the Inquisition help her through this trial? Do any couples who deal with these cultural differences aid her?

I don’t want to see any unhappy endings with this one, but feel free to explore it as much as you possibly can and don’t be afraid to get bitter or dark. Smut is not necessary for this prompt, but if you feel the urge, I always appreciate it, especially if it’s pseudoreligious sex full of allegories. That’s my shit.

My giant women, how I love them.

I just really want some Shokrakar smut, especially if you can expand on the Valo Kas and how they fit in. I'm always down for plot with my porn. I would prefer to see her paired with any of the female characters in Inquisition, but especially Josephine, Cassandra, or Vivienne.
