Halloween Special, Current Projects, New Patreon Content

I am so sorry about the radio silence as of late. Between the stuff earlier this week (yes, that stuff), dealing with deaths of people, and university; I've been very busy and mentally drained. However, the good news is, you can play the mini game of The Bureau, "Witchy Woman" right now! The link is at the bottom of this post! Eventually I'll integrate it into the main game, or put it out as potential free DLC or something, but for now there are no stats and it's not tied to choices from the base game.

Tonight is a special case. The MCT has been called in as a favor after finishing up our most recent case. A friend of Kris's reached out, and the local P.D. has let the MCT take the lead on this one. A house party in the beginning of October up in Maine has turned sour. A party-goer has been reported deceased.

We just finished a job, but in this line of work, there's always another case to solve. So here I am, approaching the residence with my team, about to find out exactly what happened on this cold, damp night.

Because it's not part of a bigger game or story, and the only pacing I had to worry about was that of the investigation, this is much more freeflow than other investigations in the main story. Go back and forth between the crime scene, the perimeter of the house, interrogations, and more! The more you discover evidence, the more new options will unlock in conversations, and you have an evidence log in the stats section that updates every time you find out something relevant to the case.

I'm only promoting this now, even though it's been done for a couple of weeks, because it was part of a Jam and I didn't think it would be fair if I got votes from a community built over a few years when others in the Jam would not have had that same benefit. I wanted it to be an even playing field, even if it meant holding out for a bit. So, I apologize for making you all wait.

There are still things I'd like to do for this game, things I'll end up adding, but it is at the very least ready to play. It's 40k words, so have at it!

Right, next up, something I'd like to announce. I'm working on a serialized fiction that I'm (hopefully) planning to turn into a book. The first 3 chapters are going to be posted for free, both here on my blog and on my Patreon, though not quite yet. Chapters after that will be released on Patreon for the people who pay the $5 tier.

I'll be honest, it has been extremely cathartic to go from writing an IF where the chapters are all pretty much the length of a book themselves, to writing an actual book where a chapter is about 4k words. It's a very nice breath of fresh air, and it by no means, entails that I will stop working on Bureau. In fact, it may even help speed up rate of production, funnily enough. Having something to keep my mind turning while having writer's block about a scene in the IF will help me constantly generate ideas, and that's really nice to think about.

A small college town is rocked by a horrific murder. In wake of the events, a couple of friends begin investigating this personal tragedy, determined to get to the bottom of what happened at the Scribe City college. The lesson is quickly thrust upon them that loss leads to pain, but pain is temporary, and loss can be forever. So what comes after the pain? They need to explore that journey together, and in the process, navigate the complicated things feelings that have started to bloom.

The book (serialized fiction for now) , called Love In Stasis, is going to be a 'WLW romance small town college murder mystery'. You will explore the relationships that these characters have and continue to form, and just how messy things get when tragedy sparks love. I have almost 25k words done for it, about six and a half chapters, and I'm going to try to get 50k words done with it by the end of the month. A writing challenge that's totally not tied to the name of any organizations.

If this works out, I could reward patrons with static fiction while not having to worry about providing everyone with constant things tied to the IF itself, and I could work on The Bureau at a pace I'm very comfortable with.

I'm still learning as a writer. I'm still learning new things I like, and how I like to produce content. All I know is that I like producing art in the form of writing, and I most certainly will not stop doing that anytime soon, and now that the Halloween Special is done, I will be getting back to the base game.

Which will start with a complete recoding of the gender variables. I've already started on that process, so no more multiple versions of each chapter. One version. One set of gender variables. Much more condensed coding and script. So, people out there who said that wasn't going to change, I just have to say what I'd said all along. My coding was indeed bad. However I will also say something else I've said all along. I do take criticism.

That being said I'm never using multi-replace and you can't make me. I like being able to read what I'm writing.

I wanna try my best to make it as good as possible for you, so I’d really appreciate a few details so that I don’t end up writing something that you don’t enjoy <3

6. Please note: I’m a person who has AuDHD (both Autism and ADHD). I’m struggling to finish my last year of school (12th year) without failing + dealing with bad mental health. Hey! This post is very important about the blog and what is currently happening! Please read if you will! (Ps: this is a very long post)

Hello everyone! Not to long ago I made a post explaining some certain stuff that will be changing and other junk like that. I have come here to inform you all some bad news involving this blog. This blog will be going on a long hiatus, and I mean long. The main reason being that my connector for the cable I use for my drawing tablet has broken, which means that I can no longer draw on my laptop or drawing tablet anymore. During that time it certainly has made me realize lots of things that I do with this blog, and that includes some of the empty promises I make. I've come to the realization that I don't have the right skill for an askblog, atleast not yet anyway, and also considering I'm still in school, it has definitely taken a toll on my work. When I first started this blog, I thought it was gonna be a piece of cake! But I was dead wrong when I decided to put some story into it, I kept on procrastinating on the story and never actually added onto it which made me frustrated. And even when I wasn't working on it, the other asks that were in the askbox felt like a challenge! And that eventually evolved to me not posting for a long while. Even in the present that still is very obviously a challenge. I will like to apologize for not posting and making some empty promises, I very obviously don't have enough skill in the moment to run an askblog, so that's why this blog will be going on hiatus, and be restarting entirely. You heard that right, the art/answered asks will be deleted. The reason behind this is due to me wanting to start over, begin something new! And y’know, actually gain more skill before deciding to add a story (if that will ever happen). I know this is all very sudden, but I made the decision that I hope will be best for me! I honestly just want to get out of school before actually doing anything, cause BOY OH BOY IS SCHOOL ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! And the moment I finally have enough time and skill, I will consider finally coming back to this blog and all of you, I have a feeling none of you will remember me or even this blog, hell, I think some of you will begin to unfollow! So the way cities are designed is nasty and not really good for anybody. Do you have any resources or ideas on how this can actually, realistically change? I mean, we can't just tear down cities and rebuild them better. Is the way forward just adding more beneficial stuff to the existing, less-than-ideal cities, and then building the new cities with people and nature in mind?

Yknow, I thought I had a tag for this, but either I forgot what tag it was or things just haven't come out of queue yet because I'm not seeing much on my blog. I feel like I've seen specific posts about making things more accessible--I tend to see this line of thought be referred to as Walkable Cities or Accessible Cities--but I can't think of any off the top of my head at the moment.

To the best of my understanding, as someone who isn't a city planner or anything along those lines, I would think the solution would be along what you suggested; adding more beneficial structures--which may include rebuilding certain things/sections but I don't thiiiink would involve the entire demolition of a building--to preexisting cities and then building the new cities with these principles in mind.

What needs to be changed will be on different levels depending on how old the city is, how it was planned out before, and whats causing issues vs what needs to be improved. There's definitely a lot of talk about needing more bike lanes and sidewalks in the US, and how sparsely everything is placed in a lot of cities without a way to really access them. I think the closest I've ever been to being in a truly walkable city was my college campus, and not only was that not the whole city but just the campus, but I also didn't really have the leg strength to walk or bike the wholething. Even still, things were close enough together that walking or biking was feasible for a lot of people--and there was a robust bus system that was free for students as long as they had an ID (though most drivers didn't ID people who looked like students, or if you were being picked up on campus).

From there I guess I'd love if something similar was implemented in other places. Free (or at least very low cost, but preferrably free) and robust bus systems, bike lanes, wide sidewalks, and things made in more of a 'hub' kind of planning instead of having everything super spaced out. With lots of green spaces interspersed throughout, like small but frequent parks that people can go to hang out with lots of benches and flowers and such. Maybe a lot of the housing set-ups would be sort of like apartments on top of stores? Close to campus, there was a mini Target and several other stores in a plaza-like block that actually all had 5 levels of apartments on top of them--you needed a special key fob to get into the elevators to access them, so it wasn't like anyone going to Target could end up at your apartment door. This could be a good way to have more structures in less space, in a way? Granted, I never lived in those units, so IDK if the quality of life was different in any way...

I feel like I've seen videos and posts discussing how one city started slowly phasing things in and out to become increasingly more walkable over the years? Maybe in Spain or something? I can't find it at the moment, however. From what I remember, they started slowly phasing cars out of certain areas of the town, instead adding more bike lanes and plazas and benches and housing until eventually basically everything was accessible by walking, biking, or taking a transit system.

I've touched this point already, but I feel that transit systems would be one of the most important parts of making a city truly accessible--but that the transit system may look different depending on where you are. New York, for example, has the subway system that from what I know (I've never taken the New York Subway I haven't been there since I was 8) is extremely efficient in getting people around--could likely use some improvements, but is definitely a good model to look at. For places where subways aren't suitable--I know Florida would deal with lots of flooding issues, trying to dig and implement a subway system--an increasingly robust bus system or even something like a monorail system like my city (sort of) has would be excellent.

Now there's definitely something to said about accessibility into buildings itself. Sometimes ramps are constructed improperly, so those would need to be fixed. I can also see there being issues with doorways and stairs and such in older buildings--though even in those cases, many buildings get revamped with elevators and wider entrances. There's probably tons of other accessibility issues that I don't even realize, because though I try to keep these things in mind, I do ultimately live life as an abled person right now.

Though another point I do also remember being brought up is the height of landscaping, especially near crosswalks and such, causing problems with accessibility for children, shorter people, the elderly, etc. Also that trailing, low-hanging plants can also cause issues by getting stuck in wheelchairs and such. These would also have to be kept in mind when considering green spaces and accessibility.

This post is getting long and ultimately I don't really know what I'm talking about in the slightest. But I do hope this was at least a little helpful!

Summary:

This series takes place after the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Serufu and her childhood friend Miku/“Purin” both applied to an elite school, where advanced technologies are incorporated into the curriculum. On her way to class one day, Serufu encounters Rei, who has a passion for old-fashioned crafts and is the head of the school’s Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Club—which is in danger of closing due to a lack of members. Realizing that this may be her chance to repair her relationship with Purin, Serufu joins the club in hopes of creating projects that could bring them together once more.

Propaganda:

It’s just a really feel-good series with some great characters. I adore all of them and their dynamics with each other, especially the main dynamic between Serufu and Purin as it develops. I’m a really big fan of the show’s angle on stuff such as do-it-yourself crafts following another industrial revolution, just because it does frequently bring up the question of “What’s the point of DIY if in a year or two/maybe even now a robot could recreate the exact same result?” through characters like Purin (who is the major character with the lowest opinion on these kinds of crafts at the start, since she’s in the technologically advanced school and has beliefs more in line with the efficacy of technology rather than the joy of human creation), with the short answer largely being because it’s just fun!

I first watched this show before I saw a lot of AI stuff intruding upon art and rewatching it after sure was fun, because I love its ideas on the worth of doing stuff that machinery could do much faster. It’s not super complex or emotional, but that largely goes in its favor, because it really doesn’t need to be those. It’s just a fun little anime about a bunch of girls having fun together through one shared hobby that some of them had from the start and some of them adopted. I also love the opening, and the ending is a massive comfort song for me. The series can also be very funny at points, and is usually super heartwarming.

Summary:

In Manila, where dark supernatural forces pervade the criminal underworld, it’s up to one woman to keep the peace—but there’s a storm brewing.

Propaganda:

It’s the first Filipino anime (at least, that I know of) to feature the country’s supernatural creatures, so if you’ve only watched Japanese anime up to now, you will find the magic in Trese very novel. I also like how the protagonist is a woman when the Lakan, in Philippine history, tended to be a man. She’s also quite badass. Although she has two bulky twin sidekicks who can serve as her bodyguards, she is in no way less than them when it comes to fighting. The show’s on Netflix with different language audios. If you’re gonna watch it in English, you can even hear Dante Basco (Zuko’s voice actor) voicing one of the minor characters.

There’s Violence from fight scenes. There’s also Gore for when the monsters get killed brutally, but because of the art style, it doesn’t appear that extreme.

Somehow bionicle is in this one

Listening: I looked at the date on my oven yesterday and it was 08-10 and I was like hey isn't that Bionicle Day. The answer is no, because it's Americans and Bionicle Day was the tenth of August. Anyway turns out that this year some fans got the original voice of Vakama to do a tribute video? And also Cryoshell dropped a new song.

Cryoshell is one of the funniest bands I know. They had little success until they got contracted in by an ad agency to do music for Bionicle, they did Creeping in My Soul for the Voya Nui arc in 2007 and ended up getting contracted in basically every year after that to whip up some music for Bionicle. They remain to this day extremely closely associated with the Bionicle fandom, like, you know, releasing their latest track on Bionicle day.

They are, and I mean this in the nicest way possible, and with all the love in my heart, the Evanescence we have at home. Bionicle had just saved Lego less than a decade earlier and the media effort around Bionicle was very well designed, which included making the perfect AMV soundtrack for 13 year olds to set their stop motion Bionicle fight scenes to. Of course I don't know anything about using a webcam and extremely dubious stop motion software to produce extensive Bionicle fanvideos. What are you talking about.

I am going to leave it here but there is so much to say about Cryoshell. Seriously just go look it up. Their music is actually very good if you like that particular symphonic metal alt rock style that was so emblematic of the 2000's.

Reading: Ended up on a research dive about small towns, because I now live in a country with a lot of small towns. Attempting to do and find a comparative anatomy of how small towns are administered around the world and what drives their success or failure. There is a lot of stuff from the Trump years when he apparently made some gestures towards the idea that people should just move out of doomed towns.

As always in the USA, housing affects everything, both in that homeownership ties people to their towns and that moving to a new city requires paying often prohibitively expensive rents. There are a lot of conservative blogs taking on this question and doing some dubious interpretations of mostly good data.

I am teasing at the thread of "limits of local government in small towns" which seems to be leading somewhere but it's still not well supported. There's a lot of factors.

Watching: the Loading Ready Run 20th Anniversary Subathon is on until this Friday. Since I was mostly watching during American night I caught primarily their watchalong of old videos, which is cute but not exactly that novel. I do like LRR.

Making: More 3D printing, trying to get the hang of modelling off a photo to make a nozzle adapter for my vacuum cleaner. Also made a little stand for my temperature and humidity sensor so I can see it when I'm sitting down or standing up more easily.

Playing: Beat Breath of the Wild finally. It was so long.

The final fight was kind of anticlimactic, between the assists you get from the divine beasts and all your power-ups I feel like I didn't have to puzzle it out as much as I did for some of the blight Ganon fights. I have kind of accepted that I just don't like the endings of most video games.

I did first go around and do the Champions' Ballad DLC quest because I stumbled into it, it's a nice set of little challenges plus some vignettes of the champions to help characterize them some more. I kind of wish you could walk around the world post-endgame and like, talk to some of the people you've met and see what they have to say. Eh.

Tools and Equipment: I have been storing my butter at room temperature the past few weeks, because it makes it much easier to spread. Modern butter is both very high fat and pasteurized so it won't go off for well over a week even if you just left it out, but the main concern is rancidity, which can happen quite quickly.

My Pro Tip is that you don't have to store the whole damn block. Euro butter is 250g blocks and I cut that into four ~60g cubes that I keep in a sealed plastic container in the cupboard one at a time. Just top it up as you go. I think American sticks are like 100g so you could cut it in half. South African butter usually comes in 500g so you'd have to cut that in like eighths.

So awhile back I had this idea on the backburner of doing a camp camp timeskip (5 years in the future in a timeline where david & gwen adopt max, 5yl for short), originally I intended to create an askblog but as of right now I don't have the time or energy to maintain something like that, so instead I'm simply going to be sharing pieces of this story at my own pace. I started with Max because he's my favorite and I had the most ideas with which direction to pull his character - David & Gwen will come next. Realistically not every character from the show cast is involved in the mains' lives anymore so not everybody will get a design, but the main five all will.

So I see a lot of people give Max something of a goth/punk aesthetic with things like chokers and excess piercings, and while I can certainly see why that happens, I personally could never picture him going that route. I think it's possibly because he reminds me a lot of my brothers all of whom tend to have a more hipster or casual aesthetic (for a long time I gave Max a beanie and I still think he'd wear one).

Along with that though, Max just never struck me as the type to overly commit to an aesthetic - he'd care abt how he looks ofc but I definitely think he'd prioritize comfort over appearance. I also hc Max with some sensory issues so things like facial piercings or choker collars would probably be irritating to him (this is me projecting my own sensory issues lol. punks you're so cool but I could never.)

So I mostly kept his aesthetic the same and focused on adding more interest to the design - as this was intended to be an ask blog I added details people would want to ask about.

The glasses are another thing that came from one of my brothers - I've never seen anyone give Max glasses (in general unless they're a nerd people just don't think to add stuff like glasses I think), and now I really like them. He gets them when he's around 14 and I haven't yet decided what visual impairment he has. I'm thinking maybe farsighted?

The long hair was something I chose on a picrew on a whim and immediately loved. I came up with this cute story plot where Max has always wanted long hair, but could never properly get it to grow out because he was never taught how to take care of his hair. He also hated going to salons bc they didn't know how to treat his hair. Then Gwen starts giving him tips and offers to do his hair for him - an offer he's extremely apprehensive about bc his experience with people doing his hair has never been good, but she does really well. She explains that she was just taught by people in her family who knew how to deal with different hair types.

Admittedly too the long hair was a decision I stuck with bc I loathe the idea that transmascs can't have or want long hair (and yes, Max is transmasc in 5yl. David is too). At this point I've created so much hair lore I could write an essay on that alone.

As for the bear pin and the bear skull on his shirt, I wanted to give Max a hyperfixation of some kind, and I just went with bears (Ik lots of children have teddy bears and it doesn't mean they particularly love bears but it's what I had to work with lol). It's the one nature thing David managed to make him genuinely like. Funnily enough I followed a few bear-themed accounts so I could write someone w a bear hyperfixation accurately, and in doing so gave myself a bear hyperfixation for awhile.

Some other details abt 5yl Max are that he loves guns and has studied them and really wants to learn to shoot, he's properly taken up knitting and he once punched somebody for calling David an ableist slur <3

(there's a lot I've put into this but it's hard to find the words to explain when it doesn't come up naturally, so I'll share plenty more abt this au when I'm ready.)

And I have said it before and I'll say it again, Tumblr has to turn to algorithmically driven content for new users joining the website because these new users don't know how to find stuff (go through a blog and find another blog, go to a public tag and find things there, find recommended blogs through them, and so on) and because Tumblr's original algorithm - the reblog - doesn't work with passive consumption styles, so they need to supplement that with a different algorithm instead.

Like on Twitter, quote retweets take away engagement from the original post, so especially for art or commentary media, people will avoid engagement. On Tumblr, this doesn't happen. You can add comments and tags and it won't detract from the original person's post. Most other websites have moved toward Likes, which yes, is why they're making Likes public now.

Likes are great and I really like them (lol), but I am just talking mechanically here: reblogs move posts around, likes previously did not. For someone with a sideblog like this, there's not necessarily impetus to reblog because this is where you come if you want enthusiastic posts about Knightfall and it's not the sort of thing you might be interested in sharing around. But for artists or general bloggers or people who write joke posts or anything else, a dearth of reblogs do create problems.

It's not a nice feeling for the threat of Tumblr going the way of most barren social media, not least when Tumblr itself is a microblogging website before it is social media, but I would suggest not to be alarmist and yes, you should totally send (polite! and kind!) messages to Tumblr Support with feedback about what you like and dislike.

I suggested gifting ad-free subscriptions to Tumblr in addition to badges, and badges of achievement-type varieties, and maybe a year later this was actually implemented. I don't even know if that influenced their decision, but it seems like a somewhat unusual step for a microblogging website to implement that type of thing (compared to something like Twitter). But the Support staff are generally very helpful.

I have done this type of thing before IRL and you would be surprised how often it can make a difference.

Anyway, like, it's probably good to keep in mind that a self-aggrandising billionaire buying out a mainstream social media website moonlighting as the social news hub of the world is a pretty extreme scenario, and certainly not a positive one (I don't enjoy the idea of social media/hubs in general being just randomly bought out, I don't enjoy the monopoly of social media, I don't enjoy the dickmeasuring of Z/uckerberg and his Twitter counterpart, it's all a circus). And Tumblr has seen worse before. And it might get worse. But you're also still here.

My guess is you’re wondering who I am, well, for the most part I’m the Author of The Phaedrona Chronicles novel series. I started writing at an early age, particularly in the venue of screenwriting. I remember being heavily enthralled with the jokes in scary movie 2 and my first written work of my own devices was almost an identical riff of what I consider to be one of Shawn and Marlin Wayans’ magnum opus’, I would dabble for years, between writing poetry in my early teen years and music later on in my 20’s, but between these two significant points of my life I had begun to write down a series of ideas that had first come to me as coping mechanism to a situation that occurred while I was about 18 or 19.

I caught a friend of mine talking to my girlfriend at the time behind my back, for context we’ll call this friend Michael. Michael had been a “good” friend of mine for some time before this, I at the time considered him, another friend of mine, “Tony”, and another friend of mine, “Jack”, to be my best friends. Originally the story of The Phaedrona Chronicles was a one shot story of betrayal, Nasir, the character I wrote as an embodiment of my own personality, was to be betrayed by all four of his “brothers” at the behest of a beautiful female enemy which came to be known as Amara.

In the original story, Nasir, his friends and the world around was drawn into war due to the unnatural sway that Amara had over the four young princes, all the while pulling strings behind all of their backs to release a long contained evil.

The book sat on a flash drive until roughly 2018-2019, now nearing almost ten years old at the time that I pulled it from the depths of my mind and set back upon it with renewed vigor. My first measure of business was the utter destruction of the original story. I found it childish, juvenile and could clearly see where my broken heart had bled all over the pages. The only part that would not be completely revised would be the opening prologue, a few of the characters names, and the idea that Amara was a dangerous woman who was in fact able to pull four best friends, who happen to be the most influential men on their planet, into a scheme of her own design in an attempt to overthrow a planetary ideology and release her people back into the realm of the living. Heavy stuff, I know.

This renewed interest led me down a path that could never be closed, before long I would fall asleep thinking of scenes I would write, or brainstorming for story lines. Before long I was actively dreaming about Nasir and the world of Ehvian, it’s people’s and it’s problems. And it was out of this immersion that the story of the Lost King began to take shape.

My main issue with the main character, Nasir, was that I had never truly intended for him to be a hero, as I myself always found villains, or anti-hero’s more compelling. So initially I wrote him as an utter asshole, in my own opinion there wasn’t much likable or relatable about him. He was rich, handsome, powerful, intelligent, he almost had no flaws whatsoever, so when rewriting him I made it a point to make him extremely flawed, yet persistent. And I feel it was this that allowed me to truly connect with Nasir on a different level than I previously did.

I’m rambling, forgive me. The point of this blog is to give you a deeper insight on largely The Phaedrona Chronicles and it’s larger universe, or multiverse if you’ve been reading along. Here I plan to write bios and character details and maybe show some early edits of certain texts. I will also be adding short stories and one offs for a variety of characters. So join me as we go on a ride unlike any other, welcome to the Phaedrona Chronicles.

it occurred to me that most folks who follow me here have not gotten The Good Ava content due to it all having existed like, 18 blogs back back in 1907.  there’s a few headcanons floating around this blog but there’s not a lot of actual Ava Talk, let alone the sort that might help someone who isn’t already familiar with her get an idea of who she is, so.  i’m gonna talk about ava!

so forces has, as ame said, a bucketload of wasted potential, and that applies to no one more than the avatar.  that being said, ava is largely canon compliant, just think of it as like...canon + ?  i’m taking a lot of forces and adding to what’s there, rather than outright changing events, if that makes sense.

ava grew up mostly alone, never had a lot of friends, but had buddies in her city and was generally well - liked.  they never formally joined the resistance after sonic’s “death,” but they did run intel for them on occasion; they’re not as fast as sonic, but they’re as closer than the vast majority of folks, and the bots wouldn’t suspect them.  eventually, eggman caught wind of the resistance cell in town, and —— well ———

“i can taste your terror, child.  all that anxiety and doubt — it’s delicious.   flee, screaming, and i’ll let you live.” 

we know how that story goes.  infinite razes her city, destroying it and killing everyone within — except for ava, because she’s helpless, because her fear is funny.  he kills her friends in front of her, and laughs at how weak she is, at how she can’t even bring herself to scream.  she finds, after that, she can’t speak — like the universe punishing her for failing to use her voice when it might have counted.

they spend a week, unfeeling, empty, digging through rubble and burying all the bodies they can find.  then they go to the resistance and joins up, with a lot of fresh trauma about being helpless, how they can’t be helpless, how they’d rather die than be weak ever again.

she’s been running missions for a month and a half, not really getting close to anyone, when she meets — rescues — the dead hero, sonic.  and he rescues her in turn.  they immediately hit it off — he calls her partner — and suddenly this girl who watched her home and all her friends be destroyed by a madman has a friend again, has a place she fits; as sonic’s buddy, as his partner, as his sidekick.  she’s only there because tails isn’t, but it doesn’t matter, it’s such a relief.  and i imagine there’s a lot of psychological stuff there for sonic, too; she is the first friendly face he’s seen after six months in a cell or being tortured!  so they get real close, real fast.

there’s null space.  another canon +.  obviously the specifics of null space are up to sonics as well as me when we’re writing, it affects your muse, too!  but regardless of specifics, it’s much more traumatizing than it is in game, lasts a long time (  and time is so fucked in null space anyway, it felt to ava like she’d been in there both hours and days  ) and they started out separated and had to find each other again in a place that didn’t exist.  when ava gets out, they feel like they don’t exist, and it takes a long time for them to feel like a person again.  knuckles and amy refuse to send them on any missions for a week because ava keeps hallucinating, screaming at what isn’t there.  it only gets even a little better when sonic’s nearby, and he’s suffering, too.

and then — big wave.  it’s rough for everyone, but ava’s fight with infinite goes a little different (  here’s a drabble about part of it  ) and ava is completely thrashed.  eventually she’s found by stragglers and brought back to the base, but she’s extremely badly injured and can’t walk without crutches for some times, but — giddy, almost, even so.  because the last time she faced infinite, she was too scared to fight, and this time she was brave!  there’s this almost manic desperate need to fight, to never lose another fight, because that’s being helpless and she CAN’T be helpless anymore.  it’s unsettling, how gleeful she is about the fight that ended with her entire body broken.

and tails comes back and she’s not sure how she fits with sonic anymore, ‘cause the real thing’s there, and tails offers her an out — stopping the sun.  knuckles outright says it will kill the rookie, nobody thinks it’s anything but a suicide mission, but she doesn’t care, she wants to save her friends and if she dies that’s fine, that’s fine, that’s fine.  then they don’t have to worry about where they fit.

and the game ends and they’re not dead and they don’t really fit anymore, and they leave to go on their own adventures (  and, in my canon, eventually come back  ) but they’ve got so many traumas about helplessness and weakness now, about silence, about what it means to be brave.  they’re strong but they’re not at the level of the other heroes, because of course they’re not, they’ve got a year of experience and everyone else has so much more.  they’re desperate to be stronger, never to be weak, and don’t care what it costs them — they get in fights they can’t win, are always covered in wounds and bandages, don’t care about their own health.  on the other hand, they’re excessively traumatized, and if their body feels like they’re in mortal danger they shut off and go for blood, even when it’s not appropriate (  stabbing tails during a spar comes to mind, simply because they forgot they were sparring tails, their body thought they were being tortured by infinite again  ).  has accepted that harm is a given, and instead of avoiding harm or coping with it, they’ve — reclaimed it.  at least then it feels like they have control.

they’re so good.  so so so good, morally rooted, strong.  but god are they deeply flawed and capable of a lot of harm.
