Best Underrated Anime Group A Round 3: #A8 vs #A2
#A2: Girls do DIY together, but after a new industrial revolution
#A8: Badass woman deals with the supernatural
Details and poll under the cut!
Tumblr media
#A2: Do it Yourself!!
youtube
Summary:
This series takes place after the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Serufu and her childhood friend Miku/“Purin” both applied to an elite school, where advanced technologies are incorporated into the curriculum. The tech-savvy Purin is accepted into the school, but accident-prone Serufu is rejected and enters a traditional school instead, driving a wedge into their friendship.
On her way to class one day, Serufu encounters Rei, who has a passion for old-fashioned crafts and is the head of the school’s Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Club—which is in danger of closing due to a lack of members. Realizing that this may be her chance to repair her relationship with Purin, Serufu joins the club in hopes of creating projects that could bring them together once more.
Propaganda:
It’s just a really feel-good series with some great characters. I adore all of them and their dynamics with each other, especially the main dynamic between Serufu and Purin as it develops. I’m a really big fan of the show’s angle on stuff such as do-it-yourself crafts following another industrial revolution, just because it does frequently bring up the question of “What’s the point of DIY if in a year or two/maybe even now a robot could recreate the exact same result?” through characters like Purin (who is the major character with the lowest opinion on these kinds of crafts at the start, since she’s in the technologically advanced school and has beliefs more in line with the efficacy of technology rather than the joy of human creation), with the short answer largely being because it’s just fun!
I first watched this show before I saw a lot of AI stuff intruding upon art and rewatching it after sure was fun, because I love its ideas on the worth of doing stuff that machinery could do much faster. It’s not super complex or emotional, but that largely goes in its favor, because it really doesn’t need to be those. It’s just a fun little anime about a bunch of girls having fun together through one shared hobby that some of them had from the start and some of them adopted. I also love the opening, and the ending is a massive comfort song for me. The series can also be very funny at points, and is usually super heartwarming.
Trigger Warnings: None.

#A8: Trese
youtube
Summary:
In Manila, where dark supernatural forces pervade the criminal underworld, it’s up to one woman to keep the peace—but there’s a storm brewing.
Propaganda:
It’s the first Filipino anime (at least, that I know of) to feature the country’s supernatural creatures, so if you’ve only watched Japanese anime up to now, you will find the magic in Trese very novel. I also like how the protagonist is a woman when the Lakan, in Philippine history, tended to be a man. She’s also quite badass. Although she has two bulky twin sidekicks who can serve as her bodyguards, she is in no way less than them when it comes to fighting. The show’s on Netflix with different language audios. If you’re gonna watch it in English, you can even hear Dante Basco (Zuko’s voice actor) voicing one of the minor characters.
Trigger Warnings:
Child Abuse – for the episode about a reanimated baby
There’s Violence from fight scenes. There’s also Gore for when the monsters get killed brutally, but because of the art style, it doesn’t appear that extreme.

Hey, y'all! I'm working on a brand new horror manga as an editor with a team of extraordinary creators. It's set in the Philippines during the early 1900s and follows the journey of a young monster hunter named Nava. Artists Azam Raharjo and Borg Sinaban are working with the talented new writer Joshua Alfaro to create some horrifyingly amazing art in this book that makes the folklore from the Philippines shine in a brand new light.

THAT TIME I CAME ACROSS THAT COMMENT UNDER THE PIN OF THE ASWANG LEADER FROM THE ANIME ‘TRESE’—
…. human, you’ve been corrupted by TFOTA series— you’re seeing Cardan Greenbriar everywhere… 😭
I added the coloured version too hehehehe!! ;))
Before anybody asks: the woman in red outfit is a Manananggal. 😌 (vampiric creature who can separate upper torso.. & she’s also a viscera sucker hehehe… >;))
I literally don’t know what type of creature the Aswang Leader is, he’s just the leader of the shape shifting evil creatures; that’s what Aswang is the umbrella term for! 🤧
If anybody likes Mythologies & wants something other than the v v well known ones, Trese is great actually, sucks there ain’t no 2nd Season..! 😒 it was a Komik too before it became a “Netflix Anime Series”… 😗🤷🏻‍♀️
…. *cries in the cold dark corner of the room over not having a 2nd season of more Filipino myth n rep*

Suits
This started with just me doodling the kambal while I was bored in class. Then, I began wondering how they could afford to have pristine suits every time we see them when they literally get torn apart on a daily basis xD and thus my Trese daydreaming ended up with this short comic lol

Are many of the animes here on crunchyroll? Or netflix? I know a bunch are but I also wonder if it's a good suggestion list ^^
Considering the numerous times I had to find alternate trailers because a lot of Crunchroll’s YouTube videos are blocked in my country… yes, a lot of the shows are on Crunchyroll. A few are on Netflix, and some are on Funimation.
As for donghua (Chinese anime), most can only be watched legally through Iqiyi or Bilibili. For the latter, it might be hard to access when you don’t understand Chinese. But fret not, these two also have official YouTube channels, so you can try checking there too.
While I’m at this, I might as well just list the sites where you can watch certain donghua...
Are You Ok - Iqiyi
Beryl and Saphire - Bilibili
God Troubles Me - Bilibili. I think some seasons are also on the official Bilibili YouTube channel
Legend of Luo Xiaohei - There are no official subs, but there are numerous fansubs on YouTube. The Legend of Hei prequel movie is on Crunchyroll, though. (Please watch the movie in Chinese… They literally translated the characters’ names to English in the dub, and it’s so cringe 😭)
Link Click - Funimation (S1 only), and Crunchyroll and Bilibili (both seasons). Link Click S1 official subs were awful, though, so I suggest looking into fansubbed versions. I think there are 2-3 different fansubs for it.
No Doubt in Us - Bilibili, Netflix
White Cat Legend - Bilibili, and I think YouTube too. @whitecatlegend also made some good fansubs for S2
Wo Jia Dashixiong Naozi You Keng - Bilibili
This is not a comprehensive list, btw. Just listing what I know off the top of my head.
As for aeni (Korean anime)… I’m not as familiar. There doesn’t seem to be any legal way to watch Mignon at the moment because of issues the creator had with Vimeo, but I could be wrong… Another aeni is Flowering Heart, and a quick search says it’s officially available on YouTube.
Trese, the lone Filipino anime on the list, is available on Netflix.
