And then Ponyboy feels so cared about when Johnny asks that because it meant Johnny was listening. It meant Johnny cares. Because Pony is so used to contradicting himself and the other person just humming in agreement because they aren’t really paying attention. But Johnny always is. He cares about every single word that comes out of Pony’s mouth. He wants to know every thought that goes on his head.

And they work so well together. Neither of them quite realizes how much they longed for that until they had it. Ponyboy needed someone to listen, not hear, but actively listen to the things he said. Johnny needed someone who wanted to be around and talk to him even though he was quiet. They needed that connection that they found with each other.
