#209 - Snubbull (Ultra Moon)
In contrast to its appearance, it's quite timid. When playing with other puppy Pokémon, it sometimes gets bullied.

From the games: Ghetsis having N's Dragon in USUM. This man's Hydreigon could solo N's whole team, packing moves that were super-effective for each member. At best, N's life is constantly under threat by the Triad to keep the Dragon in line, but we all know Ghetsis isn't above murder. It's definitely possible he could have killed N and took the dragon as a trophy.
In the side series: aside from the implied people-boiling in Masters, almost getting executed by Dusknoir's pack of Sableye in PMD Explorers, all while your partner, who had looked up to Dusknoir and put a lot of faith in him, is pleading for Dusknoir to explain himself. You would have been literally shredded to death by Sableye's Fury Swipes. WHAT. THE. FUCK.
In the anime: Coco's parents getting run off the road by Zed and him leaving them to die in a fiery explosion, with getting away with it for almost a decade. He also thought he killed an infant. Honestly, the AU movies had been pretty heavy already between that one kid whose Luxray froze to death protecting him and the old woman whose Snubbull burned alive, but that just takes the cake.
Also, how Lysandre manipulated Alain into working towards "peace", only to reveal his vision of peace meant many people would die, and thanking Alain for helping him pull it off. Imagine being 15-16, and told you're culpable for genocide, despite being completely in the dark on what was actually intended. (Plus, it's clear that Alain had a lot of trust in Lysandre prior to all this.) No wonder the kid has a major breakdown after.
In the manga, several moments. There's Lysandre and Malva falling onto sharp rocks, ending up in a bloody pile, and for a while, I had assumed he had died from that until the full chapter release (a few years later) revealed he just took extensive damage to his spine. The entire XY chapter, honestly tho. Like, the way they play Flare for every ounce of paranoia the games missed out on. The kids never feel safe, and can't really trust anybody outside their little group. And even that gets tested later due to Essentia's holographic disguises.
Then there's Matt siccing his Sharpedo on Sapphire and Flannery, who are already drowning, apparently having gotten bored waiting on them to asphyxiate and deciding to make it a bloodbath instead. And Maxie burning Norman's corpse in front of Ruby, Norman's son. The RS arc is just about as bad as the XY arc in terms of trauma.

To-Redo Masterlist
I wanted to have my to-redo list as it's own post that I can update and link to, instead of it being tied to a previous ask.
I usually want to redo art because (1) the existing artwork is old and I want to update it to my current style, (2) I want to change the design of the IPP or take a different approach, or (3) the current artwork looks okay but doesn't create a nice flow between stages in the all-stages line up picture.
So here's my non-exaustive to-redo list! I'll try to keep it updated with new lines I want to redo and removing lines once I've gotten to them.
I always have several lines in various states of completion, so I've already started some of these:
GEN 1
Pidgey–Pidgeotto (perspective/flow)?
Geodude–Golem – IN-PROGRESS
Slowbro
Krabby–Kingler (not bad as-is but the transition between stages should have better perspective flow)
GEN 2
Hoppip line – IN PROGRESS
Slowking
Snubbull line
Swinub – IN PROGRESS
GEN 3
Beautifly line
Roselia line
Annorith
Chimecho
Wynaut line – IN PROGRESS
Beldum line – IN PROGRESS
GEN 4
Chimchar line?
Bibarel? (perspective/flow)
Vespiquen
Purugly (perspective/flow)
GEN 5
Cubchoo – IN PROGRESS
Shelmet
Larvesta
GEN 6
Litleo (perspective/flow)
Pancham – IN PROGRESS
Aegislash line
Swirlix?
Binacle
Redo Comparisons: ① | ② | ③ | ④ | ⑤ | ⑥ | ⑦ | ⑧ | ⑨ | ⑩

So this Au still needs a name, BUT
I have figured out what Most of the pokemon evolved from! It only took uh, lemme look at a clock, a week or three!
For those not interested in clicking a link, it's a pokemon/dc crossover but pokemon is straight up just a Gotham thing. Like, the flora and fauna and everything else have become corrupted/ mutated/ adapted, etc into strange creatures with stranger abilities thanks to the chemicals, magic, death pits, curses, and everything else all mixing together.
So anyway, have a list of what each pokemon originally were before Gotham got a hold of them. Some things brought into Gotham (such as via zoos, museums, or rogues or whatever) and others always there. Do keep in mind I am (mostly) not including Legendaries because I'm still not sure if I want those in the Au yet lol.

could you review snubbull & granbull?
Apparently Snubbull is widely regarded by Pokemon fans as ugly, which is genuinely surprising to me. It's not traditionally cute, sure, but I still think its little teeth, big jowls, and grumpy expression are pretty cute in their own way. This is helped by the 'dex, which states that the line is kind and affectionate and only look scary to ward off other Pokemon.
Visually, I also like the way it looks a lot. The face is very bulldog-esq, but the overall design is highly stylized, adding a nice Pokemon twist onto the base animal. The two ear flaps are a nice shape, and the black accents pop nicely over the pink base. The frills help contrast with its otherwise stern look, and the blue accents add some extra color.
My only real issue is that its feet connect directly to its body seemingly with no legs, and I think the feet could've been black—it would've matched the ears and drawn the color through more, rather than adding another neutral. Overall, though, I like this guy.
I'm a little more iffy on Granbull, though I still like the overall look. I love those giant bottom tusks—very unexpected thing to see on a dog Pokemon, but they work great with Snubbull's little teeth and feel very neutral. The ears are down to a single flap now, but they also work well as a continuation of Snubbull's ears. Also, it has legs now, which is a plus.
Likewise, its personality is also continued form Snubbull's, being a sensitive Pokemon that doesn't like to fight and uses its fangs to scare people off. Aww.
However, the rest of the body is a bit bothersome. It looses the bright pink in favor of a dull pinkish-purple, which I'm not big on. I guess the idea was to make it look more powerful, but A) something can be pink and still badass (looking at you, Bewear), and B) this color makes it look like it has no fur and you're just looking at skin, which isn't a pleasant visual.
Also, the whole body just feels too plain. The black cuffs and collar are a good extension of Snubbull's black areas, but they're restrained to the upper body, leaving the lower body kind of naked. Not only could it have more cuffs on its hind legs, but I also feel like it could've kept or played around with Snubbull's dots, or kept some of its frills—just something to break up that area a bit would've helped it a lot.
Also, the tusks are the same color as its fur, which is especially weird when you consider that it has upper teeth and they're white. Don't care for that at all. I like the general look here, but this one could've used some more refinement and detailing to really work.
Overall: Controversial hot take, but I like Snubbull's design a lot and think it's pretty cute, with a good personality to match. Granbull's design works well as a continuation overall, but it's a bit too plain and could've used some more markings. Still, really enjoyable dogs.

I'm impressed when you go down the route and make Akari become a Sylveon and going against your dislike of most Fairy Types!
I get what you mean when you describe it in the tags as I have the same issue with Poison Types. (verrry unpopular opinion to have I know)
kinda fitting as Poison Types are the natual enemy of Fairy Types (as long as you're not part of the Tinkaton Evo line)
I'm still struggling with Poison Types but actually using them more and interact with them definitely helps a lot! Who knows maybe one day we're managing to feel neutral of these types and the designs.
Yeah!! I’m really only a fan of the Snubbull line, Alcremie, and Togekiss (big points to Volo for this one lol), it’s unfortunate that I just happen not to be a fan of all the others ^^;
And honestly, same with you on poison types!! Not the biggest fan of poison-types either, but Hisui gave me four that I really like a lot lol.
Perhaps we’ll get there someday!! Every time new Pokémon are released I keep my eye out for types I’m not a fan of, in case any come out that I really really like!
#wayward’s asks#thanks for the ask anon!!#I have a lot of fun listening to things like this#I hear a lot of peoples’ ‘favorites’ but I think it’s really interesting to know peoples’ ‘least favorites’ too!!

I sometimes overanalyze pokemon with like, "based on my character i shouldnt have such and such pokemon it makes no sense" and then i remember kakashi hatake who is from a long line of samurai with magical lightning powers and i know in my heart he would have a dachsbun, a mabostiff, a snubbull, a furfrou, a boltund and a goddamn smeargle. Somettimes its just not that deep and you should choose stuff you like man.

Ahhhhhhh I love your blog so much your writing is just *chefs kiss* anyways I was wondering if I could perhaps get some HCs for Hassel and Larry (together or separate it doesn’t really matter) with an enthusiastic S/O that loves Fairy types 👀
Hiiii! I did them separate, hope thats okay! It was just what ended up happening at the time. I hope you enjoy! :D
Larry & Hassel With An Enthusiastic S/O Who Likes Fairy-Types
Larry
- The two of you make quite the pair. Dull Larry and his cheerful partner. You match well with his Oricorio. You, your Ribombee, and his Oricorio never fail to put a little smile on Larry’s face after a hard day at work. You’re always excited about every little thing. It’s different from his pessimistic outlook and a breath of fresh air if he’s being honest. As you talk, you can see him watching you with a soft expression.
- Larry has little to no experience with Fairy-types. One trainers Hattrem, attempted to “silence him violently once” though, which he brings up as an anecdote when you explain your fondness to him. He can see the resemblance you have with your Pokemon. Sweet and excitable, but packing a mean punch when it comes down to the wire. I think out of all Fairy-types, he would like the Snubbull line. Not only does he think they’re cute, but he can also relate to people not wanting to be around him because of his outward demeanor. Though, he’s more dull than scary.
Hassel
- As a dragon trainer, Hassel knows better than anyone that Fairy-types are not to be underestimated. That sentiment extends to you. He loves your enthusiasm and the optimism that accompanies it. Seeing you smile makes his day all the more bright. It’s a talent to be able to see the beauty in the world around you, one you have mastered. It’s one of his (many) favorite qualities about you. The two of you can get loud when you talk about something you both enjoy. The excitement steadily raises the volume of your voice until it's at a fever pitch, and you both get told to stop shouting in the hall.
- Hassel likes that you have an opposing type to his team. It makes him feel romantic. When you ask about it, he confesses that he can imagine you both as Romeo and Juliet, minus the tragedy, of course. If there is a Fairy-type Hassel's particularly fond of, it’s Klefki. His family owned one. It was passed down through the generations and was the holder of many vault keys. Hassel has fond memories of playing with the little Pokemon when he was younger. The jingling of keys is nostalgic to him.

My cousin says only beautiful people can have beautiful pokemon but I really love fairy types. Can you suggest any ugly fairy type pokemon I can adopt?
is your cousin some sort of weird team flare fan?? that's absolute nonsense. so long as you're able to provide proper care and enrichment for a pokemon, your personal appearance doesn't matter. your pokemon won't care. it'll just know that you love it and provide for it.
that being said, if you're interested in a pokemon that some people think looks scary, try looking into snubbull! despite their grumpy appearance, these little guys are quite playful and loving. just make sure that, if you decide to purchase one from a breeder, you look into the "wild type" line. some show lines of snubbull have been bred to have even shorter snouts than they naturally have in the wild, and those snubbull are prone to health issues such as difficulty breathing and susceptibility to overheating.
