Did you watch Important Things with Demetri Martin? I still have the first season on DVD in my possession haha

Demetri also had a memorable role on Flight of the Conchords as the keytar-playing half of the "Doggy Bounce" duo (along with comedian Todd Barry on the bongos).
That show really introduced me to a lot of alt-comics in NYC that I still follow today (chief among them being Kristen Schaal and Eugene Mirman)! âđźđ

The comedians I go to when I need to laugh sometimes

John Mulaney

Hello and welcome back to day two of Comedy Walk! Walk! I wasnt able to find a postable clip of the episode I listened to today, so I posted a clip of Aziz Ansari (one of todays featured guests) from the Comedy Bang! Bang! Tv show; but if youâre really interested in hearing it, check out cbbworld.com
Another walk, another episode of Comedy Death Ray radio on indie 103.1. Todays guests were Aziz Ansari (Parks & Rec) and Kevin Nealon (SNL) as well as Doug Benson who makes his second appearance for another segment of âDoug Loves Moviesâ
This episode started with their more commonly known theme song performed by Reggie Watts, however I believe at this point in the series the song hadnât yet been written, so after Scott read his intro, he played a song by Greg Beherents band, The Reigning Monarchs (which I will list below) the show still heavily features music like a regular radio show, however it seems as if the songs have all been cut or edited down now that the episodes have been rereleased as part of the Comedy Bang! Bang! series. They also mentioned that the show was being video taped and broadcast on G4 (but I couldnât find any clips)
Todays episode was much shorter than yesterdays, Aziz was the cohost and Kevin was there promoting Aliens in the Attic, as well as a book he just wrote called âYeah youâre pregnant, but what about me?â They also took a live caller who just wanted to know what the lineup was for that weeks Comedy Death Ray live show. After the call they read a few twitter questions like âDo you smoke weed?â And âHow can I protect my home from the incoming zombie pig apocalypse?â Neither of which gained much traction as conversation starters. At the end of the show they get a call from Doug Benson who gives them his review of the new Star Trek movie, which he says was enjoyable even though he only stayed for the first 40 minutes before leaving. His three word review of the film was âTyler Fucking Perry!â To finish things off Scott says Happy Birthday to Kulap his Comedy Death Ray partner BJ Porter.
As far as the walk goes, I did notice I was walking much quicker than I did yesterday, it didnât take me as long to get to the park as it did the day before. I remembered to count my laps today, I did 4 laps around the park before heading back home on the opposite side of the neighborhood. The weather was fantastic, I didnât even wear a sweatshirt. The park was packed with people though, not enough to deter me but uncomfortable nonetheless. I also noticed that part of the circle in the park is on an incline so I guess thatâs like a bonus?
My stats werenât as impressive today as they were yesterday, but Iâm not looking to top any scores or anything, so thatâs ok. The walk ended up being shorter just because todays episode was shorter in length. I ended up doing 4947 steps and 2.14 miles in just under an hour.
Overall the walk was easier, but the episode wasnât as fun as I was hoping. Either way I enjoyed both. Episode 2/walk 2 gets a 3 out of 5.
Todays songs:
The Reigning Monarchs - âShort pants for Fattyâ
The Lonely Island - âSax Manâ
Flight of the Conchords - âBusiness Timeâ
Weird Al - âEat Itâ
Joe Pesci - âWise Guyâ
Hard & Phirm - âPiâ
Dragon Boy Suede - âNut Valetâ

Câmon guys. Do better.
Look, I have been a huge fan of SNL since I was in sixth grade. Iâve rarely missed live shows since then, and I even saw it live with Bill Hader in 2014. I have bought numerous books about it and the players that come from it. One of my all-time favorite books is Darrell Hammondâs memoir. I used to say SNL was my form of church because I religiously watched it every Saturday, and I meditated on it after each episode. What was good? What was bad? What timing was off? Which jokes could I repeat to my family and they would laugh? I loved every minute of it. 2008 was a big year for SNL, and I was there to watch it all. They even had Thursday episodes because the election was so important. Their viewership skyrocketed, and suddenly, I could talk to everyone about it.Â
My high praise and love for the show started decreasing when Donald Trump hosted in 2015. This was before the Hollywood Access tapes were found, but this was still during his Islamophobic remarks, his overt racism of Mexicans, and the sexual assault of his ex-wife. There were many things wrong with Donald Trump at this point, but NBC loved him. Their viewership was up again! Everyone wanted to watch the celebrity monkey attempt the presidency. Hillary was gonna win, no question, so why not have the Orangutang up on stage? Maybe because heâs a terrible human being that hurt million of people with his words? Maybe because we shouldnât have normalized hate speech and racism and discrimination and ableism? Why give him the platform? He did not run a single ad campaign. He didnât have to. NBC gave him the time. Now, of course, SNL cannot predict the future and did not know what was to come. But maybe they shouldnât have gone there in the first place.
I did not watch that episode. That was one of the only episodes I chose to ignore entirely and not watch any clips or listen to any sound bites the next day. I did not know what to do next. Should I continue watching my beloved show? Comedy was such an important part of my life, and I could not leave it behind. Should I forgive Lorne and everyone for allowing this racist sexist homophobic lying pig to host my favorite, beloved show?Â
Because Iâm white and privileged, I had the advantage of being able to look past this episode. Because of my tradition and loyalty to the show, I knew I couldnât give it up cold turkey.
And then last month Casey Affleck hosted. Again, I did not watch any clips (except for Kate McKinnonâs Love Actually as Hillary sketch because that went viral and I had to watch because Iâm weak). I ignored the episode. Casey Affleck should not be normalized. The women he sexually harassed (if not assaulted) lost their jobs for speaking out, but the man who committed these crimes is going to be Oscar nominated. I was so tired of the blatant hypocrisy and sexism that run our daily lives that I started getting mad. I was mad at SNL for not holding these people accountable. In any other job title, these men would have lost their jobs (probably not because of how sexist and ridiculous society is as a whole but their actions would hold more weight in their fields). Hollywood always turns a blind eye towards sexual assault. SNL can pretend itâs avant-garde and edgy but itâs Hollywood just the same. You can make a thousand jokes about the Catholic Church covering up sexual assault of minors and child molestation, but youâre literally doing the same thing.Â
And then tonight, we have the beloved Aziz Ansari give a wonderful monologue about the current state of the US with some clever lines and tidbits. But then he equates Donald Trump and Chris Brown. And heâs absolutely right. People looked the other way for various reasons. For Brown it was because he was once a talented artist. He was welcomed back to award shows later and he sold albums for years after he committed a heinous crime. Donald Trump is accused of sexual assault over a dozen times, and is on tape admitting to it, and he becomes the President of the United States. So yeah, a lot of people looked away.
But then in this same episode where Ansari makes this great analogy, you have Big Sean performing. Thereâs no mention of his 2011 legal battle where he and another man held a 17-year-old girl against her will and sexually assaulted her. Sure, the charges were lessened when he pleaded guilty to âunlawful imprisonment.â Thatâs still a really big deal. And weâre all just going to forget about that? Weâre all just going to let him take the stage at SNL and pretend it didnât happen? How could you have this analogy in the monologue and then allow this man to take the stage?Â
But then the question becomes: where do we draw the line? How many hosts in the past have been accused of sexual assault? Domestic violence? Racism? Homophobia? Sexism?Â
When Andrew Dice Clay hosted in 1990, Nora Dunn told the press she was boycotting the show. Now there were some complications with this, but the female cast was hounded by calls from the public of how on earth they could support this man and stay with the show? Now, I have an affinity toward Lorne Michaels because I think heâs a comedic genius and just a genius overall, but this was all on him. Heâs a show runner. Heâs THE show runner. He should have taken over and had Steve or Tom come in and host that week. This was not about the women of the show taking a stand because they have contracts and this is their dream job. This is all Lorne. This is where he should have protected the cast.
He should have done that with Cheeto.Â
But thereâs more to viewership than there is to moral conduct.
My sister is really good at cutting TV shows off when they promote something she does not like. She stopped watching Ellen (WHO CANNOT LOVE ELLEN DEGENERES?) after she had Kobe Bryant on. I agree with her boycott completely because there should have been no normalization of Kobe Bryant, especially by someone like Ellen. So my sister stopped watching her show. A devout viewer who would watch clips online and watch it every day at the gym, stopped cold turkey.
I do not have that ability. SNL has become a part of my personality. I have memorized sketches and charactersâ catchphrases. Kristen Wiig and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and Nasim Pedrad and Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones and Bill Hader and Kenan Thompson and Colin Jost and Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon and Darrell Hammond and Rachel Dratch and Bobby Moynihan and Fred Armisen and Jason Sudeikas and Will Forte and Gilda Radner and Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi and Eddie Murphy and Sasheer Zamata and Aidy Bryant and Andy Samberg and Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon and David Spade and Taran Killam and Tracy Morgan and Phil Hartman are all home to me. SNL is a comfort to me. But this week I was disappointed, again.Â
I think it might be because I hold SNL to such a high standard. I hold it like a religion. But itâs not perfect. It has its flaws. Tonight, they had an extended joke about the FriendZone, which is literally a joke from like 2013 that has come back to haunt us, and I sat there thinking, âThis is it? During one of the most tumultuous presidencies in modern times, this is what we are offering? Another sexist point of view where the ânice guyâ loses?â Itâs tiring. Itâs tiring to grow and change and not have your favorite show change with you. I sometimes think SNL and I are connected in some way, but thatâs pretty big of me to claim because the show literally could survive without me. I do not contribute much to it.Â
Should I just continue to call them out every time they have a host like Casey Affleck or Cheeto of America? Should I stop watching entirely? Should I stop expecting so much from a weekly variety show based on a network that Iâve devoted probably a sixteenth of my life to?Â
An essay like this is supposed to end in some gigantic flourish where I write off stunningly and everyone is impressed with all the points I made.Â
But thatâs not how this one will end.Â
Should I stop watching this show?
I don't know.Â

Meeting the cast of SNL 9/30/17
@clintbartonsdog , @myloveholtzy , and I wait at the barricades. We see some people from the standby line. The girl next to me was first or second in the standby line. We laugh and talk about the sketches like which ones were cut, which ones were funny, and PAPYRUS. It's extremely cold when the barricades go up. The girl next to me apologizes for bumping into me so much, it's really cute I love women.
Aziz Ansari walked out and we were all too shook to react quickly. We called his name and he waves but his head is down and looked like he didn't want to stop which I completely respect, it was cool enough to see him without expecting it.
Kate was the first cast member to come out. She waved and smiled but walked to her car and didnât stop for pictures. Except for this one guy who stopped her for a picture as she was walking to her car which honestly was a bit unfair but oh well it is what it is.

Heidi came out but no one yelled her name except for a few of us so I felt super awkward about asking for a pic. Same with Chris and Luke.Â
Next was Melissa (smiling as I write this because she's so pure). She was overwhelmed with happiness when the fans next to us show her gifts. She takes her time when stopping to interact with each of us and was so nice. She took a really derpy picture with @myloveholtzy and laughed, it was literally so funny I hope you post it lmao. I really appreciate her taking her time and making sure everyone got what they wanted am I in love? I think the fuck I am.

Then Aidy walked out and she is a womanâ˘. She's also incredibly nice and stops for pictures, taking her time to take a good one with all of us. She's so sweet and caring and I'm so happy she does this every time. I, once again, got a blurry picture with her but Iâm just glad I got one at all.Â

Next was Alex and I am so shook. He's honestly such a down to earth guy and takes his time to make our experience funny and individual to each of us. I got a really funny picture of him looking down because @myloveholtzy accidentally stabbed him with her sharpie. He read my sign and laughed, and said "well now I know!" after reading "SNL stands for Saturday Night Live" on the sign which was so nice of him cuz he didnât have to do that at all long story short I love him.

Next was Leslie and I finally got a picture with her!! It took me doing barricades 4 times but finally!! She smelled like weed, was wearing rainbow shoes, and signed her name with 2017. Only Leslie Jones could do that and pull it off.

Beck and Kyle came out at some point but didn't stop for pictures (throwback to when I got a picture with Beck after the Dave Chappelle episode). But they don't stop for pictures anymore) Beck put his hands up when we cheered lol and Kyle was really nice and said hi to us as they walked by. I think they asked us if we saw the show when they read our signs.
Mikey came out and cheered us on when we saw him. He saw our signs and asked us who we saw, he was really excited when we said who signed so far (Leslie, Alex, etc). He got distracted and went to take pictures with other fans but his friend said (very seriously) that he forgot to take pictures with us and that @myloveholtzy was really upset. I felt bad, I was about to be like oh nah it's cool but bless his friend for doing that cuz I've never gotten a picture with Mikey. He did a duck face in our pictures he's so funny.Â

Holy shit Cecily Strong. Just as we were talking about how she rarely ever comes out, she walked out looking gorgeous Iâm so shook. I think she asked if we watched the show as she was signing my sign and I said âyea you were so funny!â and she said âwell thatâs what iâm hoping!â idk i was lowkey embarrassed like no duh out of all the things i couldâve talked to her about iâm a mess lmao @clintbartonsdog was highkey flirting with her as she signed her wristband by calling her neat and Cecily denied it. I took a picture at a pretty low angle I tend to do that I guess my arms were too cold to actually lift up. So shook.

The barricades went down at around 2:30. Richard, our Australian friend, told us he saw Kenan, Lorne, and Spielberg at the other entrance. We waited a little longer in case Colin would come out but apparently he was with Scarjo (supposedly holding hands after the show) so he must've left the other way.

Truly an unforgettable two days. I cannot thank @myloveholtzy enough and @clintbartonsdog for being wonderful company.
As always, if you have any questions or are nervous about doing standby/barricades yourself, feel free to hit me up I'm down to talk/help you out đ¤
