HP Rec Fest - Day 1

I'm starting late, and I certainly won't be able to keep up, but I want to add some of my recs to the mix because I love the idea of this fest so much. So just to get started:I

Flip by snarkyscorp, 544 words, Snarry. Explicit.

Their second time was bittersweet, soured whiskey on Harry's breath and a look in Snape's eye that could bring down buildings.

My shortest rec, a compression of Snarry dynamics into five intense erotic encounters. There's anger, cruelty, dubious consent, passion, and apology before they reach an understanding. I love fics that can do so much within such a small compass.

2. i stop somewhere waiting for you by zillah37, 2773 words, Snarry-ish. Death fic.

"Harry?" Severus's words were slurred and he seemed to be concentrating on nothing, "Harry, why are you wearing the red robe?"

Hermione closed her eyes tightly. Right after she administered the potions, Severus would ramble on for awhile before falling asleep. She couldn't make herself leave when it happened.

It was the only link she still had to Harry.

This is a moving look at the complicated forms of compassion in the aftermath of Voldemort's defeat - one in which Harry died. Snape, curse-damaged and wracked with grief, has come to Ron and Hermione's house to live out his last days. It you want your heart wrung, read this.

3. The Boy Who Lived by Delphi, 3521 words, background Snape/Dumbledore. Mature.

Someday, perhaps, he will find himself holding a photograph, and he will peer down at the flickery image of a man with a pinched mouth and tired lines around his eyes, a man who was not really so tall or so fearsome, and he will think: 'He was only thirty-eight.'

But not today. Not yet.

Okay, full disclosure, this fic was written for me, but even if it hadn't been, I would still consider it a work of art. It packs so much insight and character development into a tightly woven fabric, a fable composed of poetic analogy and clear-eyed judgment. The portraits in miniature of Severus, Albus, and Harry touch something essential in each of them (although some readers might take issue with this version of Dumbledore), and it shows Harry maturing through the desperate need to understand. The last lines, in which this knowledge is embraced, and why, still make me tear up.

4. Lover Boy at Play by @danpuff-ao3, 4448 words, Snarry. Explicit.

Potter is a virgin, to be fair, but Severus isn’t a fair man and the sex is still bad, virgin or not.

Here's a wonderfully smutty fic, and believe me when I say Danni knows how to write hot, rough, emotional sex. It's set during Harry's school years, and Snape's obsession with the obnoxious brat plays out in a crude erotic power struggle Harry's determined to win. But he's just as obsessed, and by the end, I'd say he has the upper hand. I'd also say they both win. What started as snarling passion and possessiveness goes so deep it stirs more vulnerable organs as well. (Snape just won't admit it yet.) Bonus kink: Parseltongue! (Locked to AO3)

5. Life's not made of gold by hapaxlegomena, 5007 words, Snape/Harry. Explicit. (Yes, I know this exceeds the word count limit, but only by eight words! Let me cheat!)

He felt pleasantly loose by the time Snape stopped pretending to read his potions journal and came to sit beside him on the sofa. He sat close to him, much closer than he had been to Harry since letting him into the house; but Harry wasn't alarmed. It wasn't frightening, once you knew what he was after.

In the mood for a creepy, sensual fic that leans into Snape's perversity and the feeling of wrongness usually associated with underage fic? Only here, Harry's an adult. The elusive atmosphere builds at a leisurely pace, and one of the strangest things about it is the way Harry's complicit. He gives himself over to Snape in a scene of dreamy, dubious consent, but he doesn't need to. He seeks it out. And of course they don't talk about it. The fic vibrates along the erotic strands between Snape's longing for Lily and whatever it is he's doing with Harry; and raises the question of why Harry keeps coming back for more. (Locked to AO3)

Neutral good - As Beeswax in Summer by Rinsbane with a Snape who is really really hard to read from Harry's POV before we get the reveal of his character/real goals. Snarry.

Chaotic good - In Between Days by atrata with a Snape who is working based on his agenda. Snarry.

Lawful Neutral - The Snidget by Acid and Sinick with a Snape who is just giving his 100% to do damage control after the good side lost. Gosh, he is super alone but also really sticking to his code. Snarry.

Chaotic neutral - Frabjous by eldritcher with a Snape who is the worst planner with zero impulse control. His plan is don't follow the plan. Snaberforth and Snarry.

Lawful Evil - And Mine the Gall by @perverse-idyll with a Snape who is walking a real fine line between his desires and moral code. Deliberately!!! Snarry and Snapledore.

Neutral Evil - Remember Me to Cheetham Hill by Delphi with a Snape who definitely knows how to get what he wants and goes for it. Like really goes for it :D Snape/Filch.

Chaotic Evil - Fifty Shades of Truth by starcrossedgirl with Total Bastard Snape. Snarry but this one definitely won't work for folks who want a happy ending for their romance :D

10. Ah, there are so many. First fave was a Snapledore series from about 20 years ago. I wish I could remember more. An old, unfinished Snarry, The Marriage Stone, also sucked me in. But well-written postwar Snarry is my ultimate.

13. I believe he is very protective of them and wants them to succeed and overcome anti-Slytherin bias. So he probably keeps them disciplined and discourages marauders-type behavior. Probably keeps tutoring programs ongoing in all subjects. Maybe gives them extra lessons and reading material to give them an edge. Probably tries to find apprenticeships and postgraduation jobs for them will counsel those who need it. Keeps their secrets. Covers for their mistakes. Goes to bat for them. This all probably dropped off some after Voldie's return tho. All in all, just about the best house parent one could hope for.

15. Would likely leave Magical Britain. Live somewhere warm outside immediate influence of Mag. Britain. I could see him in Rome or the south of France. Researching, publishing, gaining recognition for his genius,in a wide range of magical fields, not just potions, but under another name. As double agent, probably had access to makers of new identoties and dox.

So I started reading the Harry Potter books, and I cant help but ship Snape and Dumbledore.

Every time anyone doubts Snape or says something bad about him Dumbledore always steps up to defend him, with the only reason being “I trust him” or when he gets asked why he trusts him after knowing his dark past he just says “Thats between Snape and I.”

And yes I know why he trusts him, all the deal about Lily blabla, buuut I like to believe he was also in love with him lol please don’t judge me

this pairing is very logical,cause they spent a lot of time together, Dumbledore trusted Snape things he never trusted another person, and Snape killed him even everything in him was against it. also in the Snape’s memories he showed Harry a moment when Dumbledore saying about early sorting. it was compliment to Snape, to his bravery, he appreciated it and maybe it was only moment which was not about Lily and Harry in these memories, i think it means a lot

Snilch is only one of the reasons Delphi is so extraordinary. If anyone ever tries to tell you fanfic is nothing but amateur garbage, point them to Delphi’s AO3 page. (On second thought, don’t. I wouldn’t want to paint a target on anyone’s back.)

I also adore Snape/Aberforth (Snaberforth? almost as mellifluous as Snapledore, heh), and I’d love to see more stories for that pairing. The way Delphi writes them is somewhere between a novel condensed down to a few thousand words, and poetry. Concision and beauty and insight. And sardonic wit. And the ability to lay bare flaws and consequences in ways that will make your heart hurt. Also unparalleled excellence in writing hot, awkward, unromantic, disturbing, amusing, overwhelming, remarkably individual and eminently re-readable sex scenes. Delphi’s version of Snape makes me think and feel so many things I’ll never be able to articulate them all.

I hope that Delphi, the writer of 2/3 of English-language and 1/2 of the total Snilch fics, is having a good day.

Snape and Dumbledore’s relationship somehow reminds me wife and husband relationship, that why i prefer them as heterocouple, even though Dumbledore’s gay. but so many people ship straight personages as gay couples, so i don’t even mind of shipping Dumbledore with women or fem versions.

 also tension between Dumbledore and Fudge reminds Holmes-Lestrade line, and i think if Snape  have been closer to Dumbledore, his reaction to Fudge attitude( having perks of dumbledore’s ideas) would be similar to Watson’s reaction to Lestrade behaviour.

Дамблдор очень напоминает Холмса, и с Фаджем у них отношения во многом как у Холмса и Лестрейда. в конце 4 книги у меня прям было ощущение, что это Холмс и Лестрейд разговаривают. конечно Фадж большим заведует в своей реальности и больше тупит, но все равно сходство явное. и если бы у Снейпа и Дамблдора были бы более близкие отношения наверняка, он реагировал бы, как Ватсон реагировал на то, что Холмсу ничего не достается от его трудов.

про снамблдор. давно пересматривала 4 фильм и я помню как-то странное было ощущение, когда Снейп дотронулся до Дамблдора, когда тот пытался Гарри от Седрика оттянуть. мне тогда показалось что Снейп дотронулся до дамблдоровой поясницы. показалось только, но мысля появилась.  шиперить я их не стала конечно от этого. а потом видела арболевские картинки в вк и под ней были только отрицательные комменты -типа бу и блюэ. меня задело. чем пейринг хуже снарья, снюциуса(они вообще за все 7 книг не поговорили ни разу!) снюпина или еще чего. Снейп с Дамблдором провел 15 лет, у них отношения во многом как в женатой паре.(и наверно поэтому мне интересней гетеро вариант этого пейринга, хотя какой-нибудь снупин с фемснейпом вряд ли бы мне понравился) Снейп с Дамблдором хранят общие секреты, Дамблдор ему доверяет то, чего другим не доверит, и много у них эмоций друг к другу, просто все это не показывалось до 7 книги.  и если бы у них не было бы разницы в возрасте и их совместный труд был бы виден во всех книгах, они бы составили конкуренцию холмсоутсону и киркос��оку.

Pairing - Minerva McGonagall/Poppy Pomfrey

Words - 5900 words

She didn't need magic affirmation.  She needed only to trust Minerva. . .and herself.

Why I read and reread it! - Because this fic gives an awesome Poppy! She's like this brilliant mix of confident and insecure. Her character growth over the fic is A+! Also I love the descriptions of the student medical problems. Incredibly sweet and emotional fic. It hit me hard when I first read it during the lockdowns <3

It's definitely not my favorite from the author. But it's a fic I needed in 2021! Hope + love + things ending well!

Jeeves and the Secret Society  by @perverse-idyll

Pairing - Snape/Albus Dumbledore

Words - 12100 words

Poor old Snape was forced to tip his head back to continue gazing deep into Albie's eyes. Romantic, what? Personally I was dashed relieved I wasn't in Snape's shoes. When Albie continued to stand there like an iridescent lamppost that has nothing better to do than loom everywhere and cast chalk-striped light, Snape whispered, "You."

Why I read and reread it! - Also one of the lockdown reads! It introduced me to Jeeves and Wooster which was like the highlight of the lockdown time. I fell in love with the TV series. Also the books! Whoa! It's one of those reading styles I thought I was going to forever hate. But this fic! <3 Beautiful fic with tons of emotion. It's the full 360 of emotion! It is a crossover fic. But don't let that stop you! You are going to come out of this fic shipping a new ship :D

It's definitely not my favorite from the author. But it's the fic I needed in 2021! Humor + love + things ending well!

Why I read and reread it! - The lockdown fic. Honestly there are fics and then there's this fic. Looks totally ridiculous on the surface. But delivers incredibly like nothing I read before. Like MyWitch explained on this art Pandemic is a love story for the ages. Brilliant emotional connect. Beautiful, beautiful, absolutely stunning intergenerational fic covering over a century of time.

It's definitely not my favorite from the author. But it's the fic I needed in 2021! Loneliness + love + things ending well!

She tried to school some sentences together through the haze of her own arousal, and held Hermione’s gaze with her own. “You are sublime, lassie. Like a Renaissance Venus. I’m sorry to gawp, but I do find you breathtakingly attractive.”

 A bit nasty, that. Thieving, really. But it’s only from Muggles, you suppose, likely more than a few who’d thieve what they could from a lad half their size who didn’t know his way around. Ones who’d leave worse than a few marks on his hips.And it’s a little flattering, isn’t it. Him here with you. Liking the look of you. Confiding a thing like that.

Why I read and reread it! - This has everything that we see in the best fics on reddit /r/nosleep. Black mirror episode! This is one of the rare fics I read this year without a happy ending. No regrets!

Why I read and reread it! -  Wholesome summer Snarry fic. Classic Acid style! This was feel good and just what I needed! If you need a refreshing and gentle read this is the fic for you! Absolute mood booster! Technically a crossover. But you definitely can read it without knowing about Stardew Valley!

Why I read and reread it! - Not so wholesome Snape fic. My personal favorite is Hollow Moon because Sirius and his Issues. Beautiful prose, totally weird and totally brilliant.

You can't really explain it, not even to yourself.  There's just something about George that draws you.  Maybe it's his occasional moments of tentativeness, of vulnerability.  He seems so lost without Fred, like a blind thing groping.  He reminds you of yourself as you were for so many years after being bitten.

Why I read and reread it! - Postwar hurt/comfort with a BIG dose of realism. But happy/hopeful ending! I really needed something like this to feel the summer mood!

Why I read and reread it!- Unhealthy Snarry is the best Snarry. It can't get unhealthier and better than this! Probably the angstiest fic I read this year. No regrets! Also really really love the POV here! Intense read!

Three freckles has Snape, along the hook of his nose, and they are spread out to form a wonky C. Three half-rings of teeth cut across his breast, and he wears them comely in dawn's light. Three snores he hums light, before he roars a belly-deep thunderous snore, again and again, and the cadence lulls Harry half-asleep.

Why I read and reread it! - Whoa! Absolute get wrecked intense fic. As in the reader is going to get wrecked. Dark, beautiful and totally unhealthy on like all the levels.  But The Tumtum Tree as the Snarry epilogue is really wholesome. Also the most beautiful prose I read anywhere! Strange but beautiful.

Letters arrive. All are burned, in the hearth lit once more. All are burned, but for the boy's. The boy's letters are unread, carefully bundled in twine, and placed on the mantel. He wonders how the boy must have begun the letter. Had the boy written his name? He cannot bring himself to find out.

In the healing house, a healing man speaks his own name. The house creaks as a purring cat, the man breathes easier, and the wound of a name scabs over.

Why I read and reread it! - Probably unhealthy. But definitely sweet. POETIC. This is what fluff looks like when eldritcher writes it. Don't skip the Giant Squid fic. It's legit brilliant.

“Scorpius, what…?”

Oh no. Harry rubs his face and Scorpius leaps to his feet. What if the potion is off? Or brewed incorrectly? It hadn’t ever mattered, because Scorpius never meant to use it! Not on anyone, not ever! And now — “Professor?”

Harry smiles. “Scorpius. It’s Harry, I’ve told you that.”

Why I read and reread it! - Because Danpuff delivers the hottest angstiest one shots guaranteed to break your heart.  Feeling sympathy for Scorpius is a mood. Especially when you shouldn't be feeling sympathy for him! The entire Danpuff writes for Kinktober 2021  collection is brilliant.

Why I read and reread it! - because PERFECT COMPERSION <3 I don't even know how Pauraque wrote something this beautiful in a Drabble. But read it! The entire HP Halloween Collection 2021 is awesome.

Why I read and reread it! - because classic Snarry with angry Harry <3 It's got a brilliant Harry characterization in a postwar setting. Actually the Harry characterization had some beautiful throwback vibes to When the Rose and the Fire Are One! I really loved that. Also really loved their relationship dynamics. This fic has a perfect Snarry happy ending! The entire Secret Snarry Swap 2021 collection is awesome!
