Ever since the televised debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump on Sept. 10, Springfield, Ohio, has become an epicenter for ferocious anti-immigrant attacks. As he struggled to regain his footing against the vice president, Trump dredged up disproved claims promoted by his running mate, J.D. Vance, who said that Haitian immigrants in Springfield were eating dogs and cats.
The false allegation, as New York Times columnist Lydia Polgreen argued, tapped into some of the worst nativist sentiment. “There is a long and grim tradition of demonizing Haitians in the United States,” Polgreen wrote, pointing to how the claim revolved around two cherished elements of life, food and pets. Polgreen argued that the situation is a reminder of the threat a second Trump term would pose. “In his elevation of something akin to blood libel against a group of blameless legal immigrants who came to America from their strife-torn nation in search of a better life through hard work… he has proved himself a dangerous and malevolent figure.” Indeed, anti-Haitian sentiment is deeply rooted in American culture, dating back to the Haitian revolution of 1791-1804, when there was a strong reaction against the overthrow of French rule. This rhetoric has frequently included accusations of animal consumption, as well as cannabalism.
As polls demonstrate that immigration remains a top concern for many American voters, Trump’s rhetoric in recent weeks has only become more toxic. At a rally on Long Island, New York, he warned his adoring crowd: “They’re coming from the Congo. They’re coming from Africa. They’re coming from the Middle East. They’re coming from all over the world—Asia. A lot of it coming from Asia. What’s happening to our country is we’re just destroying the fabric of life in our country. We’re not going to take it any longer. You got to get rid of these people. Give me a shot.”
Besides circulating a dangerous and toxic set of illiberal ideas that has caused Ohio officials to station guards at the Springfield schools and prompted two local colleges to go remote, Trump’s narrative erases the city’s real lesson for the United States: how immigrants are revitalizing decaying economic areas that have been left behind for decades.
Like places in many other so-called Rust Belt states, Springfield had been a city that struggled as the new high tech, financial service-centered economy took hold in the 1990s. But now, Springfield is booming. The recent history of the city shows not why immigrants are a threat to existing populations, but why they are part of the solution to economic decline and malaise.
This has been the history of immigration in the United States since the founding, and it remains just as important today as ever before.
For much of the 20th century, Springfield, Ohio, located about 45 miles from Columbus, was one of the thriving small cities of the Midwestern United States. Manufacturing had been at the heart of the economy since the late 19th century. In 1902, when the companies that produced Champion harvesters joined with several other brands in the merger that created International Harvester Co., more jobs and money came to the community with the production of agricultural machinery.
In addition to International Harvester, the local economy benefited from the presence of the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company, Crowell-Collier Publishing Company, and several other businesses. Though it was certainly not New York, Chicago, or Columbus, Springfield embodied the kind of bustling small city that was at heart of the American Century.
But like many of these cities, the area suffered greatly in the late 20th and early 21st centuries as factories closed and jobs went overseas. Between 1970 and 2020, the population fell from more than 80,000 to less than 60,000.
When  Newsweek magazine sought in 1983 to capture for readers what was happening in this increasingly economically desolate section of the country, it zeroed in on Springfield; the editors said it had once been a “dream city.” The magazine published a lengthy special that used the city to tell a bigger story about national decline, and its findings were bleak. Crowell-Collier had closed its plant decades earlier, while International Harvester was reeling amid the recession. Concluding with a pessimistic message, the authors wrote: “The times have not been hospitable to dreaming.”
As he campaigned in 2015, Trump’s anti-immigration and pro-tariff agenda seemed to promise relief.
But while help finally arrived, it came from a very different direction. In 2016, through various incentives, state officials persuaded Topre, a major Japanese company that produced auto parts, to invest millions of dollars to construct a manufacturing plant that would eventually create hundreds of local jobs. In the coming years, numerous other companies followed Topre’s lead.
Attracted by the low cost of living and thriving community, somewhere between 12,000 and 20,000 Haitian immigrants would move to Springfield in the following years. The pace picked up after the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, when there were not enough workers in many industries. Employers lured Haitians by advertising good jobs and a decent standard of living. Companies paid for immigration lawyers, translators, and set up online portals to smooth the transition.
The Haitian immigrants, who arrived legally with temporary protected status or humanitarian parole, settled in. They quickly proved to be a valued workforce that allowed the economy to continue prospering. They boosted the once thinned-out population and brought new cultural energy to the community.
McGregor Metal plant’s CEO told NPR that he had depended on about three dozen immigrants to fill the jobs at his factory, which produces steel parts, to make the shop floor work. At the Dole Foods factory, Haitian labor has also been vital. Earning paychecks also means taxes.
The false allegations swerving around Haitian immigrants ignore all of this demand. The fearmongering grows out of a common “they keep coming” myth about immigration, as Harvard University historian Erika Lee argued in Myth America, that wipes away the nation’s own role in “coercing, recruiting, cajoling, and incentivizing foreigners to come to the country to serve its own economic needs.”
Legal immigrants didn’t only provide labor in Springfield, but also boosted the vitality of downtown. Caribbean food trucks and restaurants brought new energy to sleepy streets. Haitian Flag Day became a popular annual event. On Sundays, the prayers and song from the St. Raphael Church, where there has been a regular afternoon Haitian Creole Mass, filled the air. Until recent months, immigrants were understood locally to be integral to the fact that Springfield was standing strong once again. CultureFest, recently canceled because of safety threats, has been a well-attended annual two-day celebration of the city’s vibrant and diverse cultural offerings.
During an interview with NBC News, one Springfield pastor said, “The real story is that for 80 years we were a shrinking city, and now we’re growing.”
With growing populations come problems. These are not imagined and have received ample coverage. As the population climbed back to previous numbers as a result of immigration and a more prosperous economy, emergency services, health care centers, schools, and city services were strained. As the housing stock declined, rent increased. It often became more difficult to secure appointments to key government offices and schools, which—once under threat of shutting down when the population was disappearing—were now trying to keep up with growing student bodies.
Tensions spilled over last year when an 11-year-old boy was killed in a school bus crash that involved a Haitian immigrant. The tragic death unleashed the type of nativist vitriol that Trump has helped to elevate to the highest levels of political power.
These kinds of problems, however, grew out of success, not crisis. They require commonsense, rational government solutions—not the kind of wall-building and deportation measures that would rob the city of a Haitian population that has brought it back to life. Federal support, for instance, could help shore up basic services. New measures to assist with affordable housing could bring down costs for homeowners and renters.
None of these policies would be easy to achieve, and they require spending, but they are well worth it. Rather than offering elixirs that would end up hurting the very communities they promise to save, including the white working-class residents who the Republican Party has depended on, rational policies that address the actual issues can strengthen the infrastructure of cities such as Springfield and allow them to remain great.
One of the most striking developments of recent years has been the way that a far-right nativist rhetoric has taken over the way that Americans discuss immigration.
While Republicans champion the imperative of exclusion and warn of the dangers of replacement, too many Democrats have responded in a defensive fashion by accepting the conservative terms of the debate. During that Sept. 10 debate, Harris’s main response to a question on the topic was to remind voters that Trump had convinced congressional Republicans to vote against a harsh bipartisan border bill. Harris promised that if she was president, she would sign the bill. Trump vacillated. This fit a recent pattern where Democrats have been scrambling to the center, if not to the right of center, to try to win back support on this issue.
Nathan Clark, the father of the 11-year-old who died in the crash in Springfield, recently blasted the Republicans trying to capitalize on his son’s death, which he reminded a Springfield City Commission was an “accident” rather than a “murder.”
Begging the GOP to stop, Clark said: “They can vomit all the hate they want about illegal immigrants, the border crisis, and even untrue claims about fluffy pets being ravaged and eaten by community members. However, they are not allowed, nor have they ever been allowed, to mention Aiden Clark from Springfield, Ohio.”
Regardless of the politics, Americans need politicians to also keep reminding the electorate of what great things immigration has done and continues to do for the nation. And there is no better place to start than Springfield, Ohio.
Writing in the New York Times, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican who was born in the city, put pen to paper to remind readers that “the city hit tough times in the 1980s and 1990s, falling into serious decline as manufacturing, rail commerce and good-paying jobs dwindled. Now, however, Springfield is having a resurgence in manufacturing and job creation. Some of that is thanks to the dramatic influx of Haitian migrants who have arrived in the city over the past three years to fill jobs. They are there legally. They are there to work.”
After praising the immigrants for their character and value, DeWine reported how one business owner in the city had informed the governor that “his business would not have been able to stay open after the pandemic but for the Haitians who filled the jobs.”
There is a lesson here for all other communities seeking to do the same. Rather than villainizing newcomers, it might be better—as so many Republicans have done until recent years—to concentrate on policies that would help to integrate legal immigrants who arrive to blighted areas seeking to work, spend, and play. Not long ago, when George W. Bush was president, a substantial number of Republicans and Democrats worked together on a grand bargain that would combine rationalizing the immigration system, including creating a legal path to citizenship for millions of people already in the United States, with tougher border and deportation policies.
Over the past decade, the first part of that bargain has disappeared. Most Republicans focused on the second part of the deal, while many Democrats abandoned hope for the first. Springfield is an important reminder that the politics of exclusion will erode the very people who have been a backbone to the nation’s economy and culture.

Ray has narrowed it down to four potential candidates to infiltrate the RFA: the first two are office workers; the days that he spent trailing each of them consisted largely of sitting around outside, occasionally passing through the lobbies of their respective buildings, until whoever he was studying that afternoon was ready to go home. The third candidate is a full-time university student with no other notable obligations— when he followed them, Ray sat in the back row of a few large lectures, but found, to his disappointment, that many of their classes were far too small for a stranger to slip in unnoticed. So Ray has been pleased today to discover that your job at a restaurant allows him ample time to study you— and study you he does.
He's already very familiar with your routine, of course; he's been keeping track of that for months now. He even has a vague idea of what your job is like, thanks to the CCTV footage which was left practically undefended on your employer's servers. But now that he's here, he's certain of it— nothing can compare to the real thing.
Ray has spent the entire day at the back of the dining room, pretending to be busy with something on his laptop screen. He's dressed inconspicuously, all in black, protecting his identity with a hat and mask. When he arranges his bangs the right way under the beanie— something he never thought he'd wear, even as part of one of the Savior's plans— he finds that they obscure the color of his eyes quite well. Of course, it's not such good news for his vision, but that's a risk that Ray is willing to take in the name of the Mint Eye.
His initial plan was not to order anything, but... well. Ray has been very busy for the past few days— it's been a long while since he's been able to have anything sweet. Besides, he reasons, it would look strange if he came here and sat around without ordering anything. He doesn't want anything to drink— the coffee would only upset his stomach, and he doesn't trust any teas manufactured outside of Magenta but Ray figures it wouldn't hurt to get a pastry of some kind. After some deliberation, he selects a strawberry-flavored muffin, which looks more like a cupcake, at least in his opinion. “Would you like that warmed up?” Your coworker asks, avoiding Ray's eyes in favor of the cash register.
“Yes, please,” Ray replies politely. He doesn’t feel entirely comfortable in this environment, but he can be brave if it means getting to spend a moment with you, even in a roundabout way.
“MC,” the coworker calls, and Ray finds himself biting his lip under his mask. It's not safe to call your name like that in public— somebody could be lurking nearby, trying to glean sensitive information about you. It would be one thing to call you that way at Magenta, but here... anybody could be listening, with any motive in the world. “Can you warm up a strawberry muffin?”
“I'd better be able to,” you quip, more under your breath than directly to your colleague, “Do you have any idea how long I’ve worked here?” Two years, three months, and 27 days, according to your official employment records, but Ray gets the feeling that this question was not meant for him to answer.
Ray tries not to watch you as you insert his pastry into the oven. Instead, he focuses on paying for the treat. Although, much to his delight, he finds that he has no trouble tapping a credit card on a reader while also staring in your direction. Evidently, he wasn’t thinking very clearly when he made this plan.“You'll be number 187,” the stranger declares, passing Ray a paper receipt.
“Thank you,” Ray remembers to say. He also remembers not to pay too much attention to you as he makes his way over to a slightly more discreet corner where he can wait for his food.
You, too, appear to be waiting— you're leaning against the wall beside the small oven while Ray's muffin toasts inside. He's sure it's going to taste delicious, just because you're the one who handled it. After all, you're so different from the other people he has followed— they would do well, Ray supposes, as anybody would at Magenta, but you... you make him feel all warm inside, like there's a candle burning in his chest. He felt that tug a little bit when he looked at you in pictures, but now that he's actually in the same room as you, Ray knows.
He scrolls through the settings on his phone so that it looks as though he's doing something when you remove the muffin from the oven and slide it into a brown paper bag. “Number 187?” Ray is obsessed with the way your voice rises at the end of the question.
He knows he can't let you hear his voice in return, however. If you recognize him when he calls, you might not want to come with him... Ray knows you're smart, so you'd be cautious. If only you knew just what kind of paradise is waiting for you at Magenta— but now is not the time to ponder such things. Instead of thanking you, as he so desperately wants to, Ray nods at you and reaches out to grab the bag.
His hands are trembling as he does so. “Here you go.” You're wearing a mask, too— of course you are, so clever, so considerate, so perfect— but he can tell you're smiling under it. You're smiling at him.
The thought is almost too much for Ray to handle— he knows he has to take that muffin and get away from you as fast as possible before he forgets himself. There are any number of things that he might do that could alarm you, and that's the last thing he wants— no, his only real desire is to make you feel as happy as you make him when he sees that smile in your eyes. So, knowing that every step he takes away from you will pain him, Ray snatches the bag and begins to move as quickly as he can in the other direction.
You release a soft little, “Huh?” And Ray thinks, as he retreats, hands still trembling, that you are beyond adorable. You're too good for him, too good for the world, and just perfect for Mint Eye.
When he gets back to his table, Ray's heart is pounding and he's breathing heavily. He can't believe he actually did that— he got so close to you, and you smiled at him. You spoke to him. It was like meeting an angel, even better than when the Savior deigned to shine her light upon Ray for the first time— no, no, he corrects himself frantically. Nothing could be better than the Savior, of course. Thinking that would be an act of disloyalty to the Mint Eye, and Ray would never betray the paradise, not in a million years. But he can absolve for his mistake later— right now, he has other, more pressing matters to consider.
After the brief moment that he takes to pull himself together, it occurs to Ray that he is holding onto more than just the paper bag, which he is clutching with a vice grip. Caught between his hand and the flimsy surface of the bag is a clear plastic glove, clearly designed for food service workers to wear. Did he somehow… steal it from you?
Ray glances back up at the counter, and he feels the heat rising to his cheeks at the sound of your voice as you address your coworker. “... took my glove!” But you don't sound angry. You sound... pleased, perhaps, and you're grinning. “That's so funny! It's like a fairy tale or something! Do you think my prince will come back here just to return my glove? That'd be romantic, don’t you think? Okay, okay, you’ve gotta cover for me— I guess I have to go wash my hands and get new gloves now, even though the other one is still perfectly good.” You giggle, waving your gloved hand in the air as if to demonstrate your point, and Ray’s heart melts. He wants to make you laugh like that again.
Obviously, you don't know that anybody is listening in on your conversation— you're clearly trying to talk quietly, though Ray is thankful that the sound of your beautiful voice has carried across the room to him. Regardless, he needs to get out of here as soon as possible— he’s genuinely concerned that he might faint if you call him your prince again. Indeed, he's beginning to feel dizzy as he delicately removes himself from the establishment, staring down at the disposable glove still clutched in his hand.
This is a sign, he realizes, stopping in his tracks just outside the door of your cafe. Ray was almost certain before, but now, he knows for sure— it has to be you. It could only ever be you. You'll be the one to help him, and in the end, he'll show you how a fairy tale romance plays out in real life.

Re: https://www.tumblr.com/redladydeath/767556852141719552/one-particularly-dehumanizing-experience-vox
I read this! Might’ve done an adhd-skim in some places so apologies if you already covered things and my eyes slip-slided over it
- Proto Vox’s design looks like it has bug motifs, (I know your protovox isn’t bug themed though but hang in there) and current Vox has shark motifs— just another way he modified himself—> he moved himself from the bottom to the top of the food chain
I can see Alastor maybe thinking that’s a bit rude of him. First he’s taller than him, (they see eye to eye) now he’s a top-of-the-pyramid predator, the biggest fish in the pond. Alastor would think that a roach has merits- they survive just about anything, they’re the last man standing and cause huge screams and terror in comparison to their small size.
- Vox being an entertaining pet for that overlord, not wanting to be carried around and manhandled— Alastor seems like he values bodily autonomy, and not wanting to be touched if you don’t want to be— that might’ve resonated with him too when they first met.
- Radio essentially lived off of advertising, so if Vox was a good ad reader or jingle composer then he’d also be a great business asset for Alastor as well.
- Vox might’ve been able to start broadcasting himself on his self-produced tv shows but only in close-up, so nobody would see that he was actually small
——
Gonna share my hc just for kicks- i hc Vox as sales-based: I think Vox would’ve been a great door to door salesman, before landing an advertising gig and later tv. If he had the charisma to convince every house on the block to buy overpriced encyclopaedias or a toaster, then with enough reach he’d have a career of convincing thousands of people to buy anything, trust everything he says, which carried over as a power when he died.
— —
It’s kind of hilarious/terrifying that at one time, Alastor was possibly the top tech overlord in Hell. (Excluding Industrial/manufacturing/factory technology.) the 20s and 30s were quite tech-forward- everyone wanting kitchen appliances, refrigerators, telephones, long distance comms, radio, sound recording equipment, faster cars, boats, planes, etc etc. Snazzy jazzy. then the era’s optimism speed and crashed into the brick wall of the Great Depression/wwii I can easily see Alastor being immediately interested/intrigued by television when they met
Oh, I'm glad you liked the post!
Yeah, I can see Alastor giving that roach speech to Vox when he's trying to convince him to stop modifying himself. Vox is just like "You think I'm a bug???" He never noticed; he was too focused on the cartoon/TV thing. Message not received.
-
Alastor probably has weird feelings about the way Vox's old boss treated him. On one hand, it's kind of funny, and Alastor's clearly not opposed to treating people like pets given his later relationship with Husk. On the other... he feels a weird sort of kinship with Vox in so many regards, and his relationship with his overlord... [leak discussion] it's uncomfortably similar to Alastor's with his contract holder– tricked into a bad deal, treated with condescension, and forced to pretend to adore them in public. Alastor likes the idea of helping Vox gain power and rise above his station, but not him changing himself in order to accomplish that goal– he sees too much of himself in Vox to stand that.
-
Vox doing ad reads/voice overs for Alastor's show is a great idea. Perfect way to get back into the industry without opening himself up to mockery, plus he's got a wonderful voice. Would also give him another reason to hate radio once he and Al split: audio-only work will always a reminder of a time when he couldn't bear to be seen.
-
Sdfghgfdfghjhg, that close-up idea is making me think of Chet Ubetcha. Kinda similar vibes to Vox, ngl.
Tumblr media
-
The idea of Vox getting his start as a door-to-door salesman is good! Might incorporate that into my backstory for him (although my version of him lowkey went directly from high school to college to military service to family life/TV work, so there might not be time (maybe during college or that year in between WWII and getting married...)).

Dank Farrik Drabble #48
Spoilers for the end of Season 3! I want to thank snowtheup on ao3 for giving me this idea. I guess I couldn't resist some Mandomera to kick off a new batch of chapters to celebrate the end of the season. More prompts to come soon! :)
Please enjoy Marketplace/Curious, and here are the rules if you want to participate!
************
It was Grogu who spotted the stall first. Which was no wonder, the little boy’s head always swiveled in every direction when they visited Nevarro’s marketplace, keen to discover if there was any new food he hadn’t tried yet. He thought his son had simply seen Karga at first, and wanted to say hi. Then he started paying attention to what the high magistrate was buying – spotchka, it looked like, which didn’t surprise Din. The saloon might have closed on the main street, but the man still liked his drink.
It said a lot about him that the first thing he noticed was the rifle on the woman’s back before he recognized the woman herself or the teenager next to her. He could give you the exact reference number of the manufacturer’s model. Tell you how precise it was and how long it could be used for before it needed to be recharged. Which parts were required to fix it should it break down. Where to get them for cheap. He used to own that rifle. It was a very good rifle. And he’d given it to someone who’d meant a lot to him.
But this was years ago, so surely –
Grogu jumped directly on the stall as soon as Greef’s back was turned. Din had only frozen for a couple of seconds, but it had been enough for the quick child to take matters into his own, tiny hands. Literally, it turned out, as he was now babbling like crazy and raising said hands over his head towards his old friend. The girl must have been fourteen or fifteen now, but her smile was just as wide as Din remembered, and she squealed in delight when the boy jumped again, this time straight into her arms.
“It’s you!” Winta said.
“It’s you,” Omera copied, more demurely, looking at him instead of his son, with an expression he couldn’t quite decipher.
Din nodded, since this didn’t exactly require a verbal answer, and it had the welcome effect of making her smile. What now? He’d never expected to see her here. She and her daughter should be safe on Sorgan where he’d left them all those years ago. That place he’d often thought about with fondness and longing. That place he’d unwittingly recreated here, in his own way, for him and his son.
Wouldn’t that be nice?
And it was nice. Having a house of his own. A kitchen. A bed. A garden. A pond. Somewhere for Grogu to be a child. A place that they could both call home. A place that they could always return to, no matter what happened.
Din knew one of the reasons why he couldn’t say anything to her right now was because she’d been right all along. It was exactly what he’d always wanted. He just hadn’t been able to see it then. So he mentioned the one thing he could instead.
“How’s that rifle been treating you?” he asked, gesturing for the weapon with his head.
“Very well,” she replied, unfazed. So maybe she didn’t mind his strange ways too much. “It’s brought me luck in the past, so I always take it with me on our travels.”
“You travel much?”
“Now that Winta is older, yes. Our village has grown, our production of spotchka as well.”
“I’ve never seen you here before,” he noted, observing how happy Grogu and the almost grown girl looked together.
“First time in Nevarro,” Omera explained. “We’ve only tried a few small marketplaces in trade ports on the Hydian Way, and we heard the town was safe again.”
“It is,” Din confirmed immediately.
“Good,” she nodded. They did seem busy enough Din thought, with prospective clients lining up behind him already. They should really be on their way, and he urged Grogu to let Winta be, but this wasn’t proving very successful as neither child was paying attention to the adults.
“Are you planning on coming back then?” he found himself asking her after he’d extracted the kid from Winta’s arms – he hadn’t even told her that they lived on Nevarro, maybe he should have started there. But again, she didn’t show any surprise at his unconnected questions.
“Next month,” she said, handing change to a woman who’d just bought several bottles and was now eyeing some of the clothes they were also selling with interest.
“So see you next month then?” Winta asked hopefully, the little boy cooing against his side.
And Din nodded, because all things considered, this was a pleasant thought. And something to look forward to. Maybe it would even give him enough time to figure out what to say to her.

"The sins of The Undertaker" ~ Melinoe's backstory
TW: mentions of fictional gore (not super detail)
Melinoe grew up was born to working class family on October 31st 1929, her mother was a teacher while her father was a Cotton manufacture. Her father's name was Clarence and her mother's name was Bertha.
Since her parents was so busy with work, Clarence hired a nanny to look after his daughters, Melinoe and her twin sister, Allegra. The nanny's name was Isadora. Isadora was a cheerful and kind woman, She looked after Melinoe and Allegra while their parents.
Melinoe spent her time in the local library, reading books of myths and stories of the past. Melinoe was so engrossed in these books, Isadora would buy books or borrowed books from the local for Melinoe so she could read at home when it was raining, snowy, windy or stormy and when it was dark or when the local library was closed.
Her mother was very religious woman, She thought the books Melinoe red was "work of the devil" even when Melinoe claimed that they were only stories. Bertha was so hellbend on getting her daughter to stop reading about mythology and stories of the past. She would go on about how she should read books by god or read love stories like her sister does. Her father resured his wife "Mel can read whatever she wanted, she isn't being corrupted by the devil, darling"
n 1943, Melinoe left school with her twin sister at age 14. Melinoe's first job was a nurse. She worked there for 5 years. When she was 16. she was looking after a elderly woman until there was a noise outside, she left the elderly woman to investigate the source of the sound.
Young Melinoe saw a woman walking around like a zombie with a path of blood. She tried to call out to her but she ignored her. Melinoe rushed after her, the woman's skin looked "ill". She didn't look like a human and she was holding some sort of flesh in her right hand. The woman disappeared. Melinoe was shocked by this, she ran away before tripping over something. A fleshy small blob, moving and breathing. It was a fetus. Melinoe took it with her.
The next day, Melinoe went to a nurse and told her what happened. The nurse didn't believe her, the nurse asked Mel if she was imagining stuff due to the stress of looking after ill people, Mel shook her head. The nurse suggested to take days off. Melinoe never told the nurse about the fetus she found.
Melinoe looked after fetus, the fetus grew up into a doppelganger. Melinoe called it "Blank". Blank was a handful. It was always Hungry, Hungry for human flesh. She didn't have human flesh, she doesn't know where to eat it so she gave Blank animal meat.
When Melinoe was 19, she quited her job as a nurse and she focused on Blank. Blank was getting more hungry for human flesh. Melinoe went to to her sister, Allegra.
Melinoe told her sister everything and how Blank needs human flesh.
Allegra told her "If you don't want to kill people then take the food when they are already dead."
Melinoe was shocked, she told her sister. She couldn't think of messing with the dead to feed the monster she hiding. It was such a messed up idea.
"Isn't that illegal, sister?"
Allegra replied:
"Well you are a woman, they won't think its you but it was a man."
Melinoe soon got a job as a mortician, she was in charge of corpses. She would always remove organs or skin to feed Blank.
Blank was satisfied with the human flesh it was getting. Melinoe soon moved into the apartments with her sister. They keep Blank hidden from D.D.D, Blank has shapeshifted itself into a cat to avoid being seen. Melinoe keeps stealing anything "human" from the corpses to feed her pet "cat" while working as a mortician and hasn't been caught.

Tax code idea.
Abolish 100% of current code.
Replace it with:
20% transaction tax at point of sale for all goods and services.
A tax exemption will be created for transactions using a government issued benefits card to pay for goods or services. For example a purchase is tax exempt if made using a card containing government issued benefits such as food stamps, SSI, SSDI, Social Security, cash assistance for families with dependant children, and/or any other spendable government assistance or entitlement. This does not include government paychecks or salaries issued via a debit card.
Make a second tax category for luxury goods and services. Define luxury goods and services as any good or service that is priced at 3x the average price for the majority of similar goods and prices of the same type. For example if the average price for a wrist watch is $30 before tax a wrist watch costing $100 before tax would also be subjected to a 20% luxury item tax in addition to the original 20% transaction tax. It would cost $140 at the register/checkout.
A third tax category for super luxury items would also be created. A super luxury tax of 40% would be assessed to any good or service that cost 6x or more what the average price of a similar good or service of the same type. If wrist watches have an average price of $30 and you buy a wrist watch that costs $200 or more you'll pay an extra 40% tax in addition to the 20% transaction tax. So a $200 before tax wrist watch would cost $320 at the register/checkout.
These would be the only taxes a non business owning citizen will ever pay. No recurring taxes on items like land, homes, and cars can ever be implemented. Taxes on items themselves, like cigarettes, gasoline, and alcohol, can never be implemented. Citizens who do not own a busniess will never pay any tax except the transaction tax of 20% plus any luxury or super luxury tax applicable.
Business taxes.
Businesses must collect a 20% transaction tax for every transaction, that is not made with a benefits card, in which they are participating as the recipient of currency from a customer or client.
Transaction, luxury, and super luxury taxes must be remitted every quarter by the 15th day of the quarter following the quarter in which they are collected.
Micro businesses will be exempt from paying a business tax.
A micro business is any business that does not profit at least 5x the average annual income of a family of four.
Independent contractors and the self employed must obtain a business license and pay taxes according to their business classification based on the amount profit they generate.
A small business tax of 20% will be created for businesses that profit an amount equal to or greater than 5 times the average income of a family of four.
A large business tax of 30% will also be created for businesses that profit 100 times or more the average income for a family of four.
A commercial business tax of 40% will be created for businesses that profit 500x or more the average income of a family of four.
A super business tax of 60% will be created for businesses that profit 1000x or more the average income of a family of four.
A mega business tax of 75% will be created for businesses that profit 10000x the average income for a family of four.
Business taxes must be remitted at the same time as transaction taxes and must be based on the transactions for which those taxes are being submitted.
Profit is defined as all money generated through the sale of goods or services minus the cost of people employed by the hour and the typical costs of doing business such as utilities, rent for a brick and mortar location, raw materials necessary to manufacture, perform or create a good or service, or the cost of goods intended to be resold as is.
The earnings of investors, salaried employees, and executives do not count as cost of doing business and must be paid from a business's profit.
A tax refund will only be issued to businesses and only in the case of an overpayment of transaction, luxury, or super luxury taxes because of accidental faulty math or customer returns of purchased goods.
This is how to reset the economy and make it BOOM again. This is how you reduce poverty. This is how you reduce crime. This is how you increase wages. This is how you reduce prices. This is how you win.

I just started a new job and got promoted quickly which is great!
I basically work alone so I’m kind of my own boss. I get to allocate my time as I see fit and don’t have someone breathing down my neck. Constantly turning my head to see who’s watching.
It’s more work but pays enough and I have a benefit that helps my business which is nice.
The job is right across from a popular shopping center in my city. I don’t shop at the mall so the only store I’m interested in is whole foods. My family loves whole foods growing up bc that’s where my stepdad worked so he would always bring home the goods. But since he died no one has felt it necessary to go out of their way to get it since it’s so far from my house. But the fact that it’s right down the street from me now is so exciting.
I plan on restarting my gym membership, shopping at Whole Foods for food, and utilizing the giant fridge I have at my job that’s practically all mine. Lord knows if I left the food at my home fridge it’d be gone within the hour bc my brother’s a fuckin munch.
I just have to get over the embarrassment of pulling into the Whole Foods parking lot with a banged up car. What are they gonna do though? Arrest me? (This is me hyping myself up)
Changing up the content style of my business and plan on launching a new product soon. I believe this new strategy will work well for me and I might be able to use one of the videos to run ads on Facebook.
My score mentor thought it’d be a good idea to
1. Introduce affiliate marketing which I didn’t think I was big enough for and
2. Collaborate with other small businesses.
I like the second suggestion much better right now. I could utilize jewelry, makeup, and wig brands in my content to really sell the lifestyle and they can repost it on their page. Kind of like a shout out for shout out.
As far as affiliate marketing goes, I need to find the right platform to use. Everytime I try to research affiliate marketing it always shows the influencer side of it and not the business side. I’ll do more digging.
I think I found a manufacturer that can make a bunch of different items for me. Denim jeans, plus dresses, plus knit. I’ve been looking for a one stop shop type for a while and I think I’ve got them. I’ll have to order a couple samples but my lord are they expensive. Gotta keep reminding myself that it’s an investment.
Thank all for now. Ciao

National Small Business Day
National Small Business Day celebrated on May 10. Today, we celebrate the self-employed and those with startups. We appreciate the individuals with big ideas and the drive to make them come true. The United States has always thrived on the idea of entrepreneurship. It’s the land of dreams and opportunity, where anything’s possible. The pursuit of aspirations has taken different forms throughout history. But none have been quite as inspiring as America’s small businesses run by individuals with true grit and heart who willed themselves to succeed. Their stories are encouraging because they represent what all of us could achieve. For over 50 years the U.S. Small Business Administration has also celebrated National Small Business Week.
History of National Small Business Day
Small businesses have been the heart of life and economy in the U.S. since the first settlers arrived. The idea of a self-made man emerged during this time when virtuous was the pioneer who built a home and life for his family despite the odds. Many colonists during this period lived on small farms in far-flung rural areas. With only the wilderness and their farms for sustenance, families had no choice but to be self-sufficient. Many people also made essential items at home.
Since the country was still very young, all businesses were small-scale. Trading in crops and services helped the economy go ‘round. However, the transportation of goods from one point to another took ages. There were also no machines since automation didn’t exist yet and banks, as we know them today, had not been established. Fast forward to the 1800s, and a new America was born. It marked the era of large-scale economic activity and manufacturing. The number of affluent Americans increased, as did the demand for goods. Modern corporations that employed thousands of workers fuelled this booming economy. In this environment, small businesses had trouble keeping up.
The story came full circle in the 20th century when large corporations faced stiff competition from businesses based overseas. America’s small businesses rose to the occasion during this period. As small businesses thrived, so did America’s economy. Many more people began to take an interest in entrepreneurship. Turning an idea into a business was no longer a dream but a viable possibility. Start-ups were born, and venture capital financing took the world by storm.
Today, the U.S. has over 32.5 million small businesses — from mom-and-pop stores to establishments providing jobs to entire towns. America would not be the same without its small businesses.
National Small Business Day timeline

I'm reading an essay by author Marcos Aguinis titled El Atroz Encanto de Ser Argentinos, The Atrocious Charm of being Argentinians, and while it is generally interesting to me as a dive into the Argentinian psyche, and also food for thought and honing of the idea that Argentinians and Americans have, in terms of national spirit, many, many similarities (a thought I most desperately need to refine down to exact definitions that will stop both Argentinians and Americans to get very pissed by it, because I meant it in the most positive way possible), I reached a part where he reproduces in full a satirical email chain, and it's too good not to be translated here for your enjoyment:
How A True Argentinian Should Behave
While driving:
systematically bother the one behind you; at the same time, blink lights and honk to the one ahead of you. You are super fast and nobody can defeat you.
The indiscriminate use of the honk is capable of dissolving a traffic jam on Córdoba street at 6pm.
The Law of Mass is valid. For example, if you are driving in a 4x4 and by your right your "opponent" cruises in a small Fiat, who has the right-of-way? Bingo!
Read the new traffic law: bikes, motorbikes and motorcycles can go in whatever fashion and direction they want; the helmet can be worn at the elbow, so that the hair can enjoy the breeze.
The pedestrian has a right to nothing, but cross wherever they want. If your insurance payments are up to date, run them over; that will teach them to respect you.
The white lines on street corners are just decoration for the asfalt. Nobody knows who the irresponsible guy who told pedestrians they should cross the street by them.
The car on your side is your mortal enemy.
The car manufacturers commited a complete inconsistency: they put in three pedals, when the vast majority of drivers only has two legs. Don't be confused: eliminated the middle one.
Blinking your lights enables you to do whatever crosses your mind. Not blinking them enables you all the same.
The red light on traffic lights indicates "danger!" you must, then, speed up as much as possible and get out of there ASAP.
Ambulances, firefighters and police can wait. Nobody in the Universe has as much a need to reach destination as you.
At a public bathroom:
Do not press any buttons, in case your fingers might get dirty or cramp.
It is to be assumed that there will be paper, soap, and hand dryers, and that everything will work to perfection.
Use aaaaaaaaaall the paper you want; the one that comes after you won't need it.
Throw all that paper into the wc. Modern physics has demonstrated that it disintegrates in water.
Do not forget to carry a safety pin with you, to write on doors and walls the first stupid thought that comes to your mind. Another one, more stupid than you, will find it funny.
On everyday life:
If it rains and you have an umbrella, walk below roofs and balconies, God forbid your umbrella gets wet.
If you don't have an umbrella, and it starts raining, run like desperate, because once you reach the speed of sound, rain will no longer wet you.
If at a shop you don't find the garment you are looking for, don't be impatient: make the clerk show you all the garments. That way they will be kept nimble and alert at work.
Take a cup of coffee or a soda at a cafe, and never forget to tip 5 cents. The little coins are useful for the bus fare.
If you are calling from a public phone booth, and the number you are calling is busy, insist again and again. The ones waiting in line don't have anything else to do.
At home:
If you live on the top floor, don't forget, before taking the elevator, to call up all the other elevators, so that those who are below and want to go up have time, while they wait, to reflect on what they did during the day.
If, on the contrary, you live on the ground floor, do as well call the elevators, which will allow the neighbours living above you the extra time to plan their activities for the day.
Take the trash out whenever you want. You pay so many taxes that you have a right to expect there to be municipal employees ready to collect it at any time.
Saying "good morning", "excuse me", "I'm sorry", and "thank you" have gone out of fashion.
The windows were invented so that you can have a clean house without the disgrace of having to collect trash in smelly cans. Besides, it's very, very, very funny to throw heavy things from your window or balcony.
At the office:
Keep in mind that locks were created by a guy who resented society and wanted to create a test of ingenuity.
Everything is public property, even the belongings of the people working there. Did you forget to buy cigarrettes? No problem: there's always some other kind smoker to whom it is no extra cost to keep up your vice for eight or nine hours.
If you smoke, close the windows, so the rest can share on the smoke that your generous puffs produce.
Comments such as "you look terrible", "that looks hideous on you", "what an idiot you are" help to boost the self esteem of your subordinates.
It is valid and healthy to note to your female coworker that she has gotten fat.
Same applies to the male coworker that is balding.
Speak very loud, that's how people will listen to you, respect you, and even answer.
The person in charge of cleaning has a servant's mindset. Dirty things up thoroughly, so that they can enjoy cleaning your office and making it spotless.

The One Where Ethan Rayne Returns
Part 4
AN: This four-part fic will contain spoilers for Seasons 1-6 of Buffy as well as canon typical behaviours, fighting, and references to violence.
“We should be safe here,” you explained to Tara once you had closed and locked the door that separated the store from the back room.  “It’s the most fortified part of the shop.”
Tara managed a tiny smile.
“And plus,” you continued speaking, hoping to cheer her up.  You moved the training dummy to the side and pried open one of the panels in the wall “if you know where to look, there are all kinds of snacks hidden in here.”
Distracted, Tara pushed herself off the couch and made her way over to you.  You stepped aside and Tara let out a small gasp at the variety of snack foods that were now visible.
“Does Mr. Giles know about this?” She asked.
You chuckled, “It was his idea.  Don’t let his stern exterior fool you; the man has a major sweet tooth.  Xander knew that and that’s why he built the cupboards in.  Plus, what good is a fortified room if there are no supplies in it?”
“That makes sense.  Could I have some of the Salt and Vinegar Pringles please?”
“Of course,” you reached into the cabinet and pulled out two Pringles canisters.  You handed the Salt and Vinegar ones to Tara and you kept the other flavour for yourself.
As you closed the cupboard, Tara sat down cross legged on the floor and opened the Pringles.
“What did Buffy mean by the Band Candy incident?”
You sat down opposite her and opened your own Pringles container after tapping it against hers causing her to smile again, “A couple of years ago when Sunnydale High was a functioning high school and not an abandoned relic, a rather large shipment of chocolate was delivered to the school and the students needed to sell them to generate money for new marching band uniforms.”
“Now I get where the name came from.”
You nodded, “The candy was manufactured in such a way that it caused the adults who consumed it to act like they did when they were teenagers.  While that was entertaining to begin with, we quickly discovered that it was a diversion.  Demons used the chaos to kidnap babies from the hospital and offer them as tribute to a powerful demon.”
Tara gasped in shock.  She was holding a Pringle in her hand but her hand had frozen midway to her mouth.
Sensing her distress, you hurried to continue, “None of the babies were hurt.  Rupert and Joyce were able to return the babies safely to the hospital while Buffy dealt with the demons.”
Relieved, Tara let out a long breath.  Then she looked at you quizzically, “Did you eat the candy?”
“I was going to but I had been busy that day and I left it in the Staff Room.  When I had a free moment, I went to grab it but someone had stolen it.  My guess is it was Snyder.  The things that man came out with under the influence of the candy were hilarious and I wish that I’d been able to record what he said and how he acted.”
Tara fished in her container for her next Pringle, “Is it okay if I ask a few more questions?”
“Go ahead,” you replied as you reached into your own canister.
“When did Qui-Gon arrive in Sunnydale?”
“The same time that Wesley did.  There was quite a big disagreement between Buffy, Rupert, and the Watchers Council some time after the Band Candy incident.  As a result, Rupert was fired from being Buffy’s Watcher and in an attempt to control the situation and Buffy, the Council sent Wesley as a replacement.”
“I’m guessing that didn’t go over well?”
“Not in the slightest,” you informed her.  “Buffy was quite reluctant to work with Wesley.  She took the backhanded and snide comments that he made to Rupert personally.  She also didn’t like the way he handled her training and the comments he made about her methods.”
“How does she feel about Qui-Gon?”
You sighed heavily, “It took her a while to even get used to his presence.  I think she’s still not sure about him.  It probably doesn’t help that she’s seen the two men argue and since she sees Rupert as a teacher slash father figure…”
“She’s more inclined to take his side over Qui-Gon’s.”
“Yeah.”
The two of you sat in silence.
“Can you feel that?” Tara asked a few moments later as she shivered.
It didn’t take long for you to realise that Tara wasn’t talking about the temperature in the room and that she must be talking about something magical.  Focusing just your godfather had taught you, you tried to identify what Tara was talking about.  You could feel an unexpected increase in the dark magical power in Sunnydale.  It was almost as if its host had lost the ability to wield their magic.
Your instincts screamed at you that you were in danger and panic welled up inside you as you broke your focus.
“Tara!” You shouted.
Her eyes were glassy as she examined you and you realised that she was connected to her magic.  If she stayed connected to it, there was a very high chance that she would either lose her magic or be infected with the dark magic.  You tried to think of something, anything that would make her refocus on you and break her connection to her magic.  Your mind was empty and then you remembered the game that Buffy, Xander and Willow played while they were at Sunnydale High.
“I need you to tell me your favourite holiday destination and what you would do while you’re there!”
“Right now?”  Tara’s voice had a dreamy, almost hypnotic quality to it.
“Yes, now!  Would you go snorkelling in the Caribbean or would you be more interested in climbing Mount Everest?”
“I don’t like that type of cold or adventure,” Tara’s voice was slowly losing its dreamy quality.  “I want to visit many places starting with France.”
“Good.  That’s good.”  You praised, “Tell me more.”
“I want to learn the history of countries and I want to visit heritage listed sites.”  Tara’s voice was back to normal when she finished speaking.
Then she doubled over, coughing and wheezing.  Moments later, the coughing fit subsided and she straightened up again.
“That magic was so powerful and seductive.”
You nodded, “I’m willing to bet that it was Ethan’s magic and I don’t think he can access it anymore.”
That night as you laid in bed sated with one of your legs intertwined with Rupert’s and the warmth and weight of Qui-Gon’s body pressing into you from behind, you replayed Rupert’s explanation of how they defeated Ethan after freeing Willow from her binds and released Ethan’s magic while Qui-Gon ensured that Ethan would have no knowledge nor memory of casting magic.
Your eyelids closed and you drifted into slumber.
Only to bolt upright hours later after having a dream of Ethan smirking at you and saying, “I did come to warn you.”   Your breathing and heart rate accelerated when you noticed that Rupert was missing from the side of his bed that he had occupied the night before.
