But the greatest of these is love.

If you knew that today would be your last day on earth, how would you live your life differently?

That profound question is a mindfulness technique to help us stay grounded, and not take a single breath for granted. But the reality is, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day hustle and bustle of life.

When my oldest brother Bobby was diagnosed with a catastrophic diagnosis last year — metastatic, stage 4 brain cancer — I witnessed him fight for his life.

Through the wonders of science, and the beauty of a positive attitude, he has defied unimaginable odds. I asked him what he has learned from the experience. 

Here are his top takeaways:

FAITH

“I always had faith throughout my life. I never doubted that there is a higher power, but as an analytical person, there was a small part inside of me that sometimes questioned it. I learned through this process that God is real. My goal was to remain positive throughout the cancer journey; it’s easier to be positive when you’re feeling collective love from all angles.

I knew that the race would be a marathon, not a sprint, and I had faith that I could endure it. ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff’ took on a whole new meaning.”

CLARITY

“What I learned is to set priorities in life. One question I asked myself is, ‘What is your maximum potential?’ Life is a series of yes and no decisions, some are harder to make than others. One way to make those decisions easier is by keeping focus on your priorities in life. I envisioned a pyramid to set my priorities, starting with myself at the top (I need to be well in order to give to others), followed by my spouse, my children, and then my extended family and friends. I realized that when I make decisions in life, based on that matrix, I’m happier and more fulfilled.”

HOPE

“After my diagnosis, I started to show my happiness more — saying hi to neighbors, waving to cars, getting to know people in my life like the guys who pick up my garbage. I apologized and asked for their forgiveness for never getting to know them. I found out their names, see how they’re doing, and ask how their day is going. I held onto hope that I could spread more happiness, and show gratitude.”

LOVE

“The outpouring of love and affection that I received from others, since the very beginning of my cancer journey, felt like a warm blanket wrapping me up on a cold winter night. It’s as if I transmitted that love and affection, and kept it inside of me, drawing from it to fight.

If you know someone who is facing a life-threatening battle, reach out in whatever way you know how to — a phone call, a text, a message on social media, a prayer; don’t be afraid to reach out in whatever way feels right to you. Every single outreach piles on top of one another, and creates a burning fire of love. That love has a compound effect and you start to believe, ‘I can do this.’ The Beatles had it right, all we need is love. I realized that love really does make the world go round. Now I try to reflect love through spreading happiness and giving back.”
