I'm sitting here rewatching Tua S3 for reasons, and one interesting thing I picked up is that the entire season is really just each of the Umbrellas struggling to define and searching for family in their own way. Here's me laying down some thoughts for y'all:
Luther - For him, family has always been about the team. That's part of the reason he's so drawn to the Sparrows, bc at first they seem to have the cohesiveness that the Umbrellas lacked. Remember, Luther was the last one left at the Academy, then Reginald sent him to the moon alone. So of course seeing a "functional" team is going to be compelling for him, and he desperately wants to be part of it. And then he and Sloane quickly fall in love and for the first time in his entire life, someone wants him for him. It's intoxicating and utterly consuming NRE that is more powerful than anything he's ever felt.
Diego and Lila - For these two, it's about figuring out how to be a family. Both together, but also a little bit with the other Umbrellas. Diego looking out for Allison and Klaus and Lila and Five coming to a truce are part of this - more about Lila and Five in a sec.
Allison - In her mind, her family is Claire and Ray. This one is obvious, but I also think that the writers did us a disservice by not letting us into Allison's perspective. If you think about it, it's completely normal for a parent to put their child above all. While I don't defend her actions, her motivation could have been more compelling and it would have strengthened her character. But sadly she's the character on the show that is most "othered" (which is bad for many reasons)
Klaus - he really dug deep into individual relationships w family, starting with Five (e2 and 5 Five and Klaus bonding are still some of the best bits of the season imo), Diego, Reginald, Sparrow Ben, and then Luther in the afterlife.
Five - Five remains a pragmatist. His bar for family is very low - success for him means the Umbrellas being alive, no matter what the personal cost or sacrifice to him or to some extent others. It is somewhat depressingly delightful to see how he makes his peace with the end of the world as the season progresses. Before that, however, I'd like to meander back to e3 and 4 where Lila convinces him to electrocute himself and then they go on the Commission mission. Both of the actors do a fine job here bouncing back and forth between witty banter and genuine emotion and I love it. It's a quick and subtle piece of dialogue when Five explains how he saved Lila from the Handler. The undertone is that they were both abused by that woman in a similar way - ultimately, she developed and kept them both as pawns in her own game. And I think Five, starting in S2E10 and fleshed out through S3, develops genuine empathy for and eventually acceptance of Lila as family, as one of them, because of this shared experience.
Viktor - Like Viktor in all seasons, he continues to feel out of place with the Umbrellas and compensates by over-prioritizing his relationships with others. Don't get me wrong, I do empathize with him that he lost real love with Sissy and Halan, but I also think Allison was 100% valid to call him out on his lying in E6, and it was on point to verbalize how the constant focus on Viktors pain minimizes her (and everyone else's) experience. (Edit to add: Viktor finally seems to get the message on this, after being called out by Allison, then subsequently both Sparrow Ben and Five, and spends the last few episodes trying to make amends. Real character development here and I like to see it)
Reginald - Well, his overarching motivation since S1 has always been bringing back his dead wife, so I won't belabor that, but also it's interesting to see how he interacted with Klaus particularly - esp in E7 when he sobers up it seems he is experimenting with remembering his role as a father. Now we don't get a ton about his internal motivation here, but you can tell there is some mild curiosity, if not affection, for Klaus, despite the fact that he ultimately is cool with sacrificing him.
Some of these are more obvious than others, but when you tie them all together, the idea that they are all desperately looking for family and the blind spots that that creates for them, some of the messiness of S3 starts to make a bit more sense.

taking these @section-69 tags onto their own post before the reblog chain gets too unwieldy. YEAH i think "julian's jaded about garak's whole schtick bc of the war and s31" is an important thing to consider here. i actually don't read the later seasons that way, but i get how some people do. i think my take is closer to that other garashir meta post that points out how, post wire, garak has actually already lost most of the mystique and intrigue he was trying to keep julian dangling with. the reason julian doesn't want him to stay in OMB is because he KNOWS it's a juvenile fantasy that doesn't represent the real life horrors garak both experienced and enacted on others, but he still enjoys the power fantasy but he doesn't know how to express that to garak.
i think maybe fundamentally i see the s31 arc differently to how many people see it. i don't think any of sloan's machinations are a huge surprise to julian in the abstract, i don't think he was ever ignorant to what espionage and black ops actually is. the reason it's a fun fantasy before sloan and maybe not so much afterwards (though we don't actually KNOW he quits playing the agent bashir program after inquisition, it's a fair assumption) is because he thought the Federation was better than that. sloan really cuts to the heart of him because of the optimism he held about starfleet.
garak is a lot of things, but he's also fundamentally very. Not Federation. julian's moral rigidity should have kept him from befriending garak in the first place, one could argue - but it didn't. and that seems to be at least in part because he recognizes that they come from very different worlds.
now none of this really contradicts the idea that garak still represents something that julian now has much more complicated feelings about - arguably that's an objective fact - it's a question of how deep that cut goes.
i think for me a lot of it comes back to that post i reblogged earlier about how the s31 arc is ultimately a half-assed and incoherent thing, so it's hard to say how it really affects julian's mindset. in an imaginary version of IAESL that really hits harder (Sisko in the Ross role, and/or overall making Julian more knowingly culpable) i imagine it would be a lot clearer - arguably demanding he and garak grow even closer, or causing a huge rift between them. the show settles on doing neither. we all know the doylist explanation but im not satisfied with the watsonian explanations either. it feels unfinished, and while that's true of relationships in real life, fiction can and ought to do something that is more satisfying.
(i think a proper garashir confrontation after ITPM would have been great, too. bc i think ultimately julian knows what he did and is okay with it and hates that he's okay with it, which could have been really interesting if they were allowed to actually share screen time at that point)

deep space 9 for the show ask? (i have not seen ds9 but i still enjoy reading ur thoughts on it)
favorite male character: I think I’m going to say Jake Sisko but Bashir (yeah yeah I know he’s annoying and all which is true but 1) That makes him funny 2) he’s also representation for people who own plushies) and Ben Sisko are close. I like a lot of them though I like Rom, Quark, O’Brien, Odo if you count him as male… Damar even though he’s overrated as all hell. So is Weyoun but at least he was gay. And purple
favorite female character: For main characters I think I’m still going to say Kira even though I feel like they ran out of things for her to do for a while, her whole backstory is very interesting + sympathetic and it’s crazy how they portrayed her as such when just a few years later people would have lost their minds yk. Also she’s a lesbian and all etc etc and her oh outfit and haircut were cool and I really liked her personality. For side characters Lwaxana Troi I loved the fake marriage with Odo episode
least favorite character: besides like the irrelevant boring ones like shakaar bareil eddington etc… I dislike the way they wrote Kai Winn towards the very end I feel like she would have been a better character with more nuance considering everything she went through during the occupation. I dislike the way the Pah-Wraiths subplot ended up being handled in general tbh like it’s not 100% bad but I don’t think they ended up building it up as as much of a threat/as interesting as the dominion so it felt kinda anticlimactic and black and white/contrived in nature. Especially since only Sisko was really involved with it out of the main cast. Don’t get me wrong I think being the emissary is a very interesting part of his character, but there’s not much that interested me abt the plot other than that and that made it feel small and self contained rather than the huge scale of the dominion conflict. Sorry that got off track. Also I hate Sloan for being boring and for being in the CIA. As a person rather than like as a character it’s Gul Dukat and it’s not even close
prettiest character: hmmm it’s close but I have to say Ezri. Wait I take it back it’s Leeta
funniest character: this one’s even more difficult… weyoun and quark are contenders… Sisko sleeper candidate for #1 but even then it’s hard to say. I think everyone has really funny moments at times. I’m going to say Dukat (< even though some things he did were fucked up not in a funny way. But overall he’s just so deranged and out of touch with reality it’s really funny to watch a lot of the time)
favorite season: seasons 5 and 6 were fire I think I’m going to go with 6 though it was amazing lots of great episodes
favorite episode: Rapture is my favorite (Dr Bashir I Presume being second) it’s so good literally look at this
my third place is take me out to the holosuite fourth is in the cards and fifth is just the scenes where Odo had the baby changeling that one time that was so cute. I do hate Dr. Mora though I feel like it’s disengenuous to characterize him as completely sadistic and evil bc yk he was a bajoran living under the occupation and he had no idea what the nature of the sample was at first but he still fucking sucked he was such an asshole me when I refuse to admit I was wrong and don’t ever change or take others’ feelings or experiences into consideration or apologize for physically harming my liquid son. + I feel like the show was way too willing to present him as right when a lot of the time he just was not
favorite romantic ship: I wasn’t on board with Kira/Odo at first at ALL but I was kinda sold on it eventually, although I do have some problems with its execution (mainly I don’t think they focus on Kira’s feelings and perspective nearly enough I really loved the episodes leading up to them getting together. Actually I take it back I still think in concept it is pretty sweet but a lot of what they did with it in execution was not it to me, what I like abt it in the actual show is more abt what it said abt or contributed to or whatever to Odo’s character, it really didn’t add much to Kira’s in my opinion which is very sad bc she was my favorite character in the earlier seasons. So I guess that leaves Lenara and Jadzia as my favorite. I might be biased for obvious reasons but I genuinely really liked their relationship, like the way it was written and acted during the episode. Ofc it only had to last 1 episode so it wasn’t the most in depth or anything but I really enjoyed watching it. Idk if it should be #1 though. Jadzia and Worf were pretty hit or miss, Miles and Keiko I actually liked but they were kinda dragged down by shitty writing on occasion. Sisko and Kasidy I like but I wouldn’t say theyre my favorite I feel like they didn’t have that good of episodes together, like they did have some but there weren’t that many times when they were on the same side which is a shame (and they have the same thing as Kira/Odo where they don’t focus on her perspective enough in my opinion but it’s to a lesser extent). Kasidy was based for helping the Maquis though. Non canon ones I don’t see a lot of evidence for so I’m not including them (like I’m not against them I can see all of them but I don’t think that in the actual universe of the show they are romantic in nature. Well romantic and reciprocal at least Garak was definitely into Julian at least initially). Ok I guess I’m going to say Miles and Keiko whatever whatever they were cute ok I don’t care what people say I liked them. I liked them in Time’s Orphan and the badminton or raquetball or whatever it was episode.
favorite family ship: do I even have to say it Jake and Ben Sisko <33 their relationship was like my favorite part of the show since s1. I haven’t talked abt Worf in this whole post so I’m going to talk about him here, I think it’s funny how he did not parent his son whatsoever. That’s mean I’ve only said negative things abt him on this post I like him. The episode where Jadzia almost fucking died was good and the one where he was babysitting Kirayoshi was also good. The one with like his brother or whatever was bad though
favorite friend ship: julian and miles aren’t my favorite but honorable mention for their strangely gay moments that was great always loved to see it on screen. I like them all it’s so hard to pick just one. Kira and Dax was probably my favorite though I loved like all their conversations and whenever they would just like hang out. They were also kinda gay as well like that holosuite scene
^although ofc I strongly disagree with the she doesn’t swing that way part. I’m referencing homosexuality too many times I swear that’s not the only or main reason I like this show the plot is really good
worst ship: I’ve talked abt this before many times so not to beat a dead horse but Garak and Ziyal makes me cringe he’s so much older than her its so awkward not to mention it’s completely out of character. Jake/Ziyal should’ve happened instead it would have been so cute. I know I just undermined this man’s credibility but he was right to regret this
Also Ezri/Worf (ofc that was only for like 1 episode) and Ezri/Bashir made me very uncomfortable I watched their scenes like this 😐 it sucked that they retconned him being over Jadzia too like I actually really appreciated the way he moved on initially
#this ended up being really long I had a lot to say#but it was very fun thanks for swnding it :)#ds9

Vancouver albums 2017 part II
Vancouver metal band Bison released what may be its best album yet.
Welcome to Part II of Vancouver Albums You Might Have Missed in 2017. For more info on the rules of the list, see Part I.
In this post, we look at full-length records released by Vancouver artists between July 1 and Dec. 31 of this year.
Uptights, Time + Space (July 4)—Power-pop with an edge and classic songwriting chops from a band made up of a whos-who of the local music scene.
Would you trust these guys with your theorem? Uptights display classic songwriting chops on Time + Space.
Bison, You Are Not the Ocean You Are the Patient (July 7)—Fourth full-length (fifth if you count the 30-minute debut Earthbound) from the city’s premier metal band. According to Brooklyn Vegan: “It may prove to be the band’s best album yet; while previous releases had great songs, Ocean has a cohesive, deliberate structure that the other albums lack. The band’s affinity for longer songs and a dual vocal attack are firmly in place, as well as their knack for weaving bursts of thrash between the slower sinews of sludge.”
Colin Cowan & the Elastic Stars, Cosmos in Summer (July 25)—Cosmic pop. “Album IV in the Elastic Stars’ Seasonal Tetralogy.”
Small Town Artillery, s/t (August)—From bio: “… the final permutation of a project over a decade old. Founded by brothers Tom (Vocals, Guitar) and Derek (Drums, Vocals) van Deursen, and supported by Carson Webber (Bass), STA began in the small Kootenay town of Meadow Creek, BC. Their sound was born from experimentation almost free of influence and has grown into mature, high energy Rock music.” First uploaded in 2016 but made available to the public this summer.
The Orange Kyte, Grow It Right (Aug 4)—Debut full-length from psychedelic-pop outfit.
Woolworm, Deserve to Die (Aug. 25)—Vancouver label Mint Records describes Woolworm as “a hardcore band who have decided to play pop music.” Deserve to Die is the trio’s second album, following 2012’s Believe in Ourselves. Visit mintrecs.com for more info.
Petunia and the Vipers, Lonesome Heavy and Lonesome (Sept. 8)—”The band successfully and effortlessly shifts through a variety of styles… Although the variety might be jarring on some albums, here the group manages to create a cohesive sound to the whole project. The result is a highly enjoyable listen, all the way through.”—greatdarkwonder.com
Scott Perry, Songs of Serenity—Member of The Orchid Highway and Top Drawers releases an album of original songs “in the Seventies vintage…”
The Boom Booms, A Million Miles (Sept 14)—Third album from soul/funk/pop outfit. “All nine tracks are varied both in terms of rhythm and musical influence,” according to CanadianBeats.ca.
Lt. Frank Dickens, Sour Bubblegum (Sept. 29)—Sophomore album from deep-voiced record store clerk favourite.
Just a Season, All the Stars Are Out Tonight (October)—Americana. Video: “Trouble in Her Eyes“.
Year of the Wolf, As If We are Sinking (Oct. 5)—Full-length debut from quintet drawing on indie-rock, blues and country. Year of the Wolf formed in 2012. As If We Are Sinking is the band’s debut full-length.
The Brad Muirhead Quartet, Old/In/Out/New (October)—Mix of experimental and straight ahead numbers from trombonist Brad Muirhead.
Shirley Gnome, Taking It Up the Notch (Oct. 20)—Gnome takes advantage of signing to well-heeled local indie label 604 Records by releasing an album of sexually explicit and hilariously NSFW country-pop.
Dopey’s Robe, Who and When is Stephen Networks? (Oct. 31)—According to beatroute.ca: “Dopey’s Robe is a five-piece Vancouver slime-pop post-rock band. Guitarist, co-vocalist, and Mount Pleasant liquor mix-master Max sums up with three words: ‘Keep it slimy.’” Who and When is Stephen Networks? is the band’s second album; they released a nine-song self-titled debut in January.
The Dreadnoughts, Foreign Skies (Nov. 10)—From The Dreadnoughts’ Wiki page: “… a 6-piece folk-punk band… [that] combines a wide range of European folk music with modern street punk.” Foreign Skies is the group’s fourth full-length album.
Storc, s/t (Nov. 18)—Debut full-length from band comprised of musicians from other bands. From Exclaim!: “The results are described as ‘unhinged, raw, punishing and again, at times, melodic.’ Despite the overreaching heaviness, the album also all comes with a welcomed dose of weird, sliding in bits of paisley-tinted psych, shoegaze and krautrock alongside buzzsaw guitars, garage-minded stomps and classic Pacific Northwest sludge. A simple sonic beast this is not.”
Jasper Sloan Yip, Post Meridiem (Oct. 27)—The third album from the singer/songwriter.
Jasper Sloan Yip and band. Nelson Mouellic photo.
Leisure Club, s/t (Nov. 20)—Debut full length. “Bounding between peppiness and moody lyrics like “You don’t want me in your life,” Leisure Club’s boisterous sound serves up nostalgia for 80s summer movies (and actual summer). Break ups and longing are masked by old-timey vocals and shimmy-worthy beats as the quintet dances through it all,” according to greyowlpoint.com.
Leisure Club released their debut album this year.
Cousin Harley, Blue Smoke: Music of Merle Travis (Nov. 25)—Trio fronted by Vancouver guitarist Paul Pigat pays homage to the influential musician. Songs include “Sixteen Tons” and “Too Much Sugar for a Dime”. Contact Little Pig Records for more info.
Nicholas Krgovich, In An Open Field (Dec. 1)—Latest album from a “perennially underrated pop auteur” (Exclaim!). From bio: “Tracked with a ‘live’ band in Coventry, UK… [and] overdubbed in Los Angeles, CA and Vancouver, BC, the record flows with a sophisticated, assured grace that in Steely Dan-like fashion belies the listless melancholy and knottiness found throughout the lyric sheet.”
Jodi Proznick, Sun Songs (Dec. 1)—Bassist Jodi Proznick mixes pop and jazz on this, her second full-length. According to local music scribe Alexander Varty, “… she’s broken with the instrumental format of her 2006 debut, Foundations, to write a collection of songs that look at love from multiple perspectives. The tone is often bittersweet, understandably, but Proznick’s resilience shines through.” Listen to “The Book of Love” here.

The Heart of the Mountain (TV Movie)
Signed, Sealed, Delivered star Kristin Booth is back in British Columbia for her latest project, The Heart of the Mountain. The movie is part of this year’s Winterfest original movie series from the Hallmark Channel which airs throughout January.
The story of The Heart of the Mountain was developed by Kristin and her husband Tim Ware. Tim also wrote the script for the movie, and Kristin is serving as the executive producer. Not much has been officially revealed about the plotline, however it looks like it will be a love story closely tied to skiing or snowboarding. The first couple days of production were spent at Mad Dog’s, a ski and snowboard shop on Montrose Avenue in downtown Abbotsford. Kristin also revealed via Instagram that the movie would be spending time filming at Manning Park Ski Resort, which is just off the Crowsnest Pass between Hope and Princeton.

It sounds like Kristin will make an appearance in the movie, but the stars are Kristy Swanson (Dude, Where’s My Car?, Psych) and Dean Cain (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Supergirl).
Kristy shared a behind the scenes look at the movie via her Instagram:

We’ll update this article if more information about The Heart of the Mountain is revealed. The Heart of the Mountain will continue filming in British Columbia until December 8th.
Frozen in Love (TV Movie)
Like The Heart of the Mountain, Frozen in Love is part of Hallmark’s Winterfest lineup that will be airing in January. Again, the storyline hasn’t been released, but it’s sure to be set in a winter wonderland. The production scouted the Revelstoke area, where Hallmark’s Marry Me at Christmas filmed earlier this year.
In an interview with Ruth Hill at My Devotional Thoughts, writer Rick Garman revealed that Frozen In Love will star Rachael Leigh Cook (She’s All That), and it’s a story based on her original idea. Rachael spent the month of June in British Columbia filming another Hallmark movie called Summer in the Vineyard. It was the follow-up to Autumn in the Vineyard, which also filmed in the province in 2015.
We’ll update this article if more information about Frozen in Love is revealed. Frozen in Love will continue filming in British Columbia until December 8th.
