The most underrated antagonist/villain in Puss in Boots the Last Wish is . . .
Everybody is praising Death/The Wolf as they should. He's in no way undrrated!
Big Jack Horner has his own fans. People love how evil he is and others love him for . . . other reasons. So much so that he got himself a page on the sexypedia. Before you ask, yes, Death has his own too.
Goldilocks and three bears are relatively popular. Most of people love Goldilocks' look and their family dynamic.
Baker's Dozen are lumped together with Jack Horner as they are his underlings. The most memorable thing about them being their deaths. Which death was your ''favorite''? I liked the lady that cried over her friend being eaten by a flower and later screamed ''You shot me!''
The Serpent Sisters are in the one scene but get a lot done. They get the plot going by bringing the map, the blond one fangirling over Jack Horner (I think some people can relate to her. I'm looking at you Jack Horner simps!) exposes his backstory in a fun and believable way and later dies by being turned into gold. The other one gets one joke, asking if she can go.
Giant of Del Mar !!!!
Everybody is gushing over the action scene he's in but that's it! Look at him! His design is so simple yet so great! He looks like he's made out of the earth itself! His antlers!
His glowing mouth as if there is something shining inside of him, his life force? His gloving blue eye! The eye patch! His satchel made out of a tree! His teeth are stalagmites and stalactites! Look how cute he is in that picture!
I hope he's alive and just knocked out. When he wakes up feed him and you will have a great protector!

Day 2 in Chile: Birding along the central coast
After a decent night's sleep, we got up early this morning for our birding tour. The guide and a driver picked us up at 8am and we had an epic day of birding! It was cold but mostly sunny, so not as cold as yesterday except when it was very windy. The guide told us that this is one of the best times of year to visit Chile, bird-wise, because a lot of birds that breed further south migrate here in the winter... as do a lot of birds who breed further north!
We did spend a lot of the day in the car in between birding, but that was fine actually as it gave Wife (who is an introvert) a break from interacting and it also meant less time in the sun and wind. And we saw lots of birds, nearly all of which were new for me.
The guide hasn't shared the eBird list with me yet so I'm sure I won't remember everything, but here's what I remember (not chronologically, and I've tried to put my favorites near the top, but not really in order and they were all exciting in one way or another):
Humboldt penguins! We were pretty lucky; I think there were about 30 of them hanging out on a small island preserve very close to the beach.
Inca terns. These were very beautiful and unusual-looking terns, dark grey with long white whiskers and red beaks, with a yellow spot at the base, and red feet.
Grey gulls starting to get their breeding plumage. I thought these were very cute, elegant gulls.
A giant hummingbird. Which... is not an exaggeration. It was enormous. Too big to hover. But clearly hummingbird shaped. Totally incongruous!
Tufted tit-tyrant. (The Tufted Tit-Tyrants is my new band.) Probably one of the cutest birds I've ever seen.
Peruvian boobies
Peruvian pelicans--not too different from the brown pelicans we see at home, but larger.
Three kinds of cormorant: Most were neotropic cormorants, but we also saw a couple of guanay cormorants, and several of the very beautiful red-legged cormorant.
Southern lapwings. Kind of a patchwork pattern of coloration.
Two rufous-chested dotterels, one of which was getting its breeding plumage.
Three kinds of cinclodes: gray-flanked (which breed in the Andes but winter on rocky beaches), seaside (larger), and (I think?) buff-winged.
Two kinds of oystercatchers: blackish and American (I don't think I'd seen the American kind before; the ones in California are black oystercatchers).
Yellow-billed pintails
Yellow-billed teals
Diuca finches
Lake duck (similar to a ruddy duck)
Rufous-collared sparrows (apparently more common than house sparrows in Chile, and infinitely cuter!)
Coscoroba swans, which looked less mean and more friendly than our usual swans
red-gartered coots
Great shrike-tyrants
Long-tailed meadowlark. Startlingly red face and front.
Chimango caracaras, which were the raptors I'd seen on the way from the airport. Apparently there are no corvids here, but these fill that ecological niche. We saw two of them eating a dead meadowlark.
Dusky tapaculo. The guide made limited use of playback in the one foresty stop. This bird is very shy but we did manage to get a decent view of it.
Variable hawk.
Harris's hawk
Great grebes
White-tufted grebes
Brown-hooded gulls
Chilean mockingbirds
Two kinds of swallows: blue-and-white and Chilean
Chiloe wigeons
black vultures
a rufous-tailed plantcutter
Austral thrushes
Austral blackbirds
We also saw sea lions and a couple of otters!
We had them drop us off at a restaurant in Viña Del Mar, which saved them some driving and meant we could try a restaurant we were interested in. We drank Pisco sours (a great cocktail!) and--as usual--ordered too much food. Then we managed to get a bus back to Valparaíso and had a steep walk back up to the hotel, as the funiculars don't run late.

for @lookforanewangle.
The world flashes past in an indistinct blur, all dark clouds and black trees. Forested hills slope to and fro between the gaps, taller and rockier than the sun-tanned bluffs of San Diego; the cliffs to the left rise in steep, vertical lines, hard edges and stretched shadows marked by intermittent signs warning of landslides. Out here, there’s nothing but the headlights of their little red Buick to illuminate the way ahead.
Ice doesn’t say a word. Maverick doesn’t need him to. He rests his temple against the passenger window, tracking their climb. On the ground, it’s a slow ascent. In the air, it goes by so fast Maverick barely notices.
There’s a certain altitude that sparks awareness, he thinks. The awareness of being high, high up, higher than a human being's ever meant to be. The cloud cover woven beneath you triggers little else than a yes, I’m in the sky—but then you descend, through wisps and mist and white smoke, and the hills come into view, and then the trees, and then buildings, streets, traffic lights, cars, growing larger and larger by the second, Lego miniatures made full-sized, and that’s when the adrenaline arcs through your blood, fires like a live wire between your ears—holy shit, I’m in the sky.
It never gets old. There’s a childish wonder that comes with it, that never goes away no matter how many sorties Maverick performs, no matter how many day-to-day exercises he has to cycle through, no matter how quickly his brain flashes to Goose and the fading memory of Goose’s laughter in the backseat.
San Diego is hours behind them. At the end of the day, Ice had taken one look at his face and told him to pack a bag.
“I thought I was the impulsive one,” Maverick had said, but he’d done as he was told.
(“I don’t know why I came back,” says Maverick, three hours ago when they’re packed on I-5 between golden headlights and scarlet tail lights like a can of sardines, the acrid odor of engine exhaust permeating every breath. “I shouldn’t have come back.”
“You followed your gut,” says Ice, cheek rested against the back of his hand, fingers tapping the wheel.
“I did.” Maverick closes his eyes. The door had been open, and he’d stuck his foot inside before it had closed. No thought, no finesse. He hadn’t wanted to fly without Goose. He hadn’t wanted to serve without Goose.
But Goose lives at TOPGUN, too. He haunts every classroom, every hallway. He haunts the hangar, the taxiway, the cockpit, the very sky itself. Every inch of Miramar. Every inch of Mission Beach, La Jolla, Del Mar.
So Ice drives him north.)
The roadside treeline breaks off, draws back like a curtain to reveal a sprawl of forest beneath them. Mountains loom in the distance, like sleeping giants. There’s an overlook sign stuck in the dirt a couple hundred feet ahead.
“Pull over,” says Maverick.
They do so. Once Ice kills the engine, Maverick opens the door and steps out. He hears Ice do the same, but doesn’t turn around. Instead, he stuffs his hands into the pockets of his jacket, and steps up to the rocky outcrop beyond the lot.
This far away from the cities, the sky is filled with stars.
“They say that out here, you’ll see a falling star every five minutes.”
Maverick tosses a grin over his shoulder, then. “Wow, so romantic.”
Ice scoffs from where he’s leaning against the hood. In this lowest of lights, it’s hard to make out his expression. Maverick goes back to him.
After graduation, after the Layton, Ice followed him to San Diego. Became an instructor. Backed him up, day after day—and talked him down, when their methods sparked and ground against each other in furious tumult. Joked with him, studied with him, listened to him, and then, at night, within the private darkness of closed doors and shuttered windows, pulled Maverick into his arms, kissed his temples and breathed into his hair. Saw Maverick reeling after a long day, a long week, as the days marched on and summer gave way to autumn, to his first holiday season without—
Saw Maverick’s face cracking under the weight, and took him away.
Maverick slides his arms around Ice’s waist. It’s almost immediately reciprocated, a strong arm around Maverick’s shoulders. Ice smells like soap, and sweat, and faintly of the upholstery of a new car, five hours spent running away. He turns them just enough to press Maverick against the hood, still warm from sun and engine both.
It silhouettes him against the night sky. Maverick’s heart skips a beat.
Ice pulls away just enough to touch his jaw, to search his face. His eyes are intent and direct, like they always are. Like he can look through Maverick’s skin, through muscle and flesh and bone, right down to his very soul.
Maverick doesn’t mind it so much, anymore.
“Well?” he says. His mouth tugs into another smile, slighter. Kinder. “Chop, chop. We’re not getting any younger.”
Ice shakes his head, huffs a laugh. Then he leans in the rest of the way.
Like this, it feels like everything will be okay.
found this in my files and impulsively decided to finish it...

✨✨ TOP FIVES FOR 2020 ✨✨
2020 was, i think we can all agree, a massively chaotic year but i have never consumed as much media before in my life, so i thought others might benefit from my slothery uh, connoisseur.... ship? yes, that. below are the books, comics, shows, and movies that got me through!
B O O K S .
the starless sea, by erin morgenstern - i loooove this book because it loves me back. it says: ‘oh, you’re a reader, well i have just the thing for you.’ it luxuriates in language and story and riddles and fairy tales and it feels like an entire library in a single tome.
they never learn, by layne fargo - oh fuuuuuck, this was satisfying. i thought it might feel a little exploitative as it is very aware of the zeitgeist and likely would not exist without the #metoo movement but it never ever did. this was a fucking ROMP, period. reading about a woman getting away with murdering skeezy guy after rapey guy after shitty human just made me happier and happier.
moonflower murders, by anthony horowitz - this is the second in the susan ryeland series (and the first was hardcore good fun too) and really feels very classic mystery with the artful twist of catering to the literary community. mainly because: susan isn’t a detective, she’s an editor and she gets drafted in this time because the clue to what happened to a missing woman is in a book she edited, if she can find it. both of the books in this series have such an excellent coming together moment that is rare af to find.
the invisible life of addie larue, by v.e. schwab - the writing in this is just so good. it has that feel to me where i just want to drop the book and open up my own page and let my fingers fly. it’s that inspiring kind of writing that reminds you of all the things language can do.
crown of feathers/heart of flames, by nicki pau preto - aaahhh, this series is SO FREAKING GOOD! why is there not more of a fandom for it, why???? it is so many of my favorite tropes all resting perfectly together to the point where you almost forget they’re tropes because they just so naturally evolved there. ugh, it’s just.... it’s so heart-bursty good.
.... number 5, part 2? raybearer, by jordan ifueko - this was just so original and i was invested af. like, what a brilliant idea though and an even better execution?? i loved every character and am so looking forward to the next in the series so i can get to know them even better!!
honorable mentions (sh*t i still liked a whole heckuva lot): you/hidden bodies, by caroline kepnes // writers & lovers, by lily king // i’ll be gone in the dark, by michelle mcnamara // the faceless old woman who secretly lives in your home, by joseph fink & jeffrey cranor // girl, serpent, thorn, by melissa bashardoust // a little life, by hanya yanagihara // the guinevere deception, by kiersten white // obsidio (and the entire illuminae series), by amie kaufman & jay kristoff // the bone houses, by emily lloyd-jones // house of salt and sorrows, by erin a. craig // we hunt the flame, by hafsah faizal // savage legion, by matt wallace // blacktop wasteland, by s.a. cosby // crier’s war, by nina varela // the empress of salt and fortune/when the tiger came down the mountain, by nghi vo // upright women wanted, by sarah gailey // the monster of elendhaven, by jennifer giesbrecht // a deadly education, by naomi novik // you let me in, by camilla bruce // when you ask me where i’m going, by jasmin kaur // the lights go out in lychford/last stand in lychford (and the entire lychford series), by paul cornell // the devil and the dark water, by stuart turton // serpent & dove, by shelby mahurin // one by one, by ruth ware // ruthless gods (this was SUCH an upshot from the first book - it’s worth sticking with if you’re on the fence), by emily a. duncan // cemetery boys, by aiden thomas // the inheritance games, by jennifer lynn barnes // the fortunate ones (2021 release), by ed tarkington
C O M I C S .
cosmoknights, by hannah templer - the art was gorgeous, the gayness was glorious, and just.... hot HOOOOOOOOT lady knights in space?! a princess winning her own hand? find something not to love in there, i dare you.
don’t go without me, by rosemary valero-o’connell - wow. wow wow wow wow wow. the writing was stunning, so lyrical and atmospheric and deep, and rosemary has to be one of my favorite artists but even that managed to come as a beautiful surprise because it was just so freaking bold.
through the woods, by emily carroll - i loooove emily carroll, the convergence of spine-tingling horror and art that feeds into it, that is both visually and aesthetically pleasing, is hard to beat! p.s. i also read beneath the dead oak tree from her this year and it was also a BANGER.
the impending blindness of billie scott, by zoe thorogood - zoe is someone that i just want to follow. she’s just starting and i want to be there for every single step. i love her art style and her ability to tell a story with it.
above the clouds, by melissa pagluica - this was so unique, and such a baller concept, as nearly half the entire book is conveyed only through the art and yet you’re never once lost, never once confused as to what any character is thinking or feeling. it’s a story within a story and only one of those gets words though they both are chock full of emotion!
um.... number 5, part 2? crowded, by christopher sebela - everything about this series is fun af. crowd-funded assassination and a hirable bodyguard who’s rated like an uber driver??? and the chemistry between the two mains is so great and gay!!
honorable mentions: monster and the beast, by renji // long exposure, by kam ‘mars’ heyward // fence, by c.s. pacat // invisible kingdom, by g. willow wilson // ms. marvel, by g. willow wilson // heathen, by natasha alterici // not drunk enough, by tess stone // giant days, by john allison // die, by kieron gillen // be prepared, by vera brosgol // ascender (sequel to descender, which is also great), by jeff lemire // the unbeatable squirrel girl, by ryan north // bang! bang! boom!, by melanie schoen // gideon falls, by jeff lemire // life of melody, by mari costa // cry wolf girl, by ariel slamet ries // the tea dragon society, by katie o’neill // ptsd, by guillaume singelin // heartstopper, by alice oseman // solutions and other problems, by allie brosh // finding home, by hari conner // the magic fish, by trung le nguyen // something is killing the children, by james tynion iv // the weight of them, by noelle stevenson // spill zone, by scott westerfeld // skyward, by joe henderson // miles morales, by saladin ahmed
F I L M S.
parasite, dir. bong joon ho - oh it was satisfying, oh it was suspenseful, oh i had to watch some of it through my fingers but i loooooooved it. such a good story and so well made.
knives out, dir. rian johnson - okay, everything about this movie was amazing. every single character was fun as hell and i could’ve watched an entire movie about each of them. what a great fucking mystery!
blindspotting, dir. carlos lopez estrada - this made my heart hurt so damn much. what glorious writing, acting, and story!
portrait of a lady on fire, dir. celine sciamma - gooooorgeous cinematography, amazing chemistry, and such a soft, atmospheric film.
the farewell, dir. lulu wang - i cried and my heart felt so full and i love it so so much.
um.... number 5, part 2? someone great, dir. jennifer kaytin robinson - no part of me expected to love a netflix movie this much but it’s a love story that doesn’t get told that often?? the end of a relationship and the true love of friendship and i love these girls and i love jenny and nate’s broken relationship.
honorable mentions: eighth grade, dir. bo burnham // booksmart, dir. olivia wilde // midsommar, dir. ari aster // the curse of la llorona, dir. michael chaves // the secret life of pets 2, dirs. chris renaud & jonathan del val // jojo rabbit, dir. taika waititi // the invisible man, dir. leigh whannell // the favourite, dir. yorgos lanthimos // can you ever forgive me?, dir. marielle heller // troop zero, dirs. bert & bertie // ready or not, dirs. matt bettinelli-olpin & tyler gillett // brave, dirs. mark andrews & brenda chapman & steve purcell // the half of it, dir. alice wu // palm springs, dir. max barbakow // doctor sleep, dir. mike flanaghan // uncut gems, dirs. benny sadfie & josh sadfie // birds of prey, dir. cathy van // bloodshot, dir. dave wilson // the old guard, dir. gina prince-bythewood // enola holmes, dir. harry bradbeer // hocus pocus, dir. kenny ortega // always be my maybe, dir. nahnatchka khan // finding dory, dirs. andrew stanton & angus maclane // die hard, dir. john mctiernan
S H O W S .
black sails (2014) - this show, this shooooooooow. i cannot, it just makes me want to cry with how good it is. the characters, the EMOTIONS, the story, the plaaaaaan. like, the creators clearly had a plan for every single step of this show and it was a gOOD, GOOD PLAN.
the untamed (2019) - truly, cheesy good fun with one of the best gay romances ever. i love these characters and their relationships to each other and the way it glories in its own ridiculousness.
the righteous gemstones (2019) - one of the things that bothered me about my next choice (the ratio of female to male nudity) was so much more realistic in this one (i mean, we’ve all gotten five thousand dick pics and i know like three people? so the fact that there is so rarely male nudity in shows when there are tits everywhere..... no, how does that even make a tiny bit of sense?). this show was such great, wonderful, awful fun. they’re not great people and the show is under no delusion about that and it’s GLORIOUS!
the witcher (2019) - this was just hella fun, i loved the characters and the fantasy elements. i’m excited for the next season, it’s just entertaining swashbuckling through and through!
fargo (2014) - all of this was really very enjoyable with the through line being somebody fucks shit up and gets involved in something they really shouldn’t be involved in that’s going to swallow them whole. season one and season three were my stand-out favorites but they were all so violent, clever, and vicious!
um.... number 5, part 2? central park (2020) - um..... so many of the hamilton actors in a muscial cartoon drawn and written by the bob’s burgers team? WHAT ABOUT THAT DOESN’T SOUND AMAZING?! it was such a joy to hear daveed diggs and leslie odom jr.’s voices again!!
honorable mentions: schitt’s creek // the mandalorian // mr. robot // broadchurch // mindhunter // jack ryan // the good place // the end of the f***ing world // big little lies // elite // kidding // servant // letterkenny // curb your enthusiasm // i am not okay with this // ozark // buzzfeed unsolved: true crime/supernatural // you // runaways // dear white people // dickinson // brooklyn nine-nine // will & grace // 9-1-1 // dead to me // solar opposites // never have i ever // killing eve // what we do in the shadows // grace and frankie // avenue 5 // roswell, new mexico // the bold type // evil // tuca & bertie // impulse // the umbrella academy // watchmen // infinity train // corporate // search party // on becoming a god in central florida // a.p. bio // criminal: uk // the morning show // mythic quest // last week tonight // prodigal son // the great
#the starless sea#the invisible life of addie larue#the untamed#knives out#2020 favorites list!!#i tried to stick to shows i both started and finished in 2020 otherwise like schitt's creek and the good place would be in top five#same for comics#uh oh i've found the keyboard again

February 14, 2021: Brokeback Mountain (2005) (Part 1)
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Or Palentine’s, Galentine’s, Single Persons Appreciation Day, what have you!
Anyway, on this day where we (and the greeting card companies) celebrate love in all of its forms, I think it’s about time to diversify my movie choices a little bit. SO, for the next few days at least, we’re going to change it up, starting with a film that shook the 2005 public’s perceptions of love: Brokeback Mountain.
And who brings this movie to us? Same guy who gave us this:
And this:
And would give us this:
Ang Lee wasn’t originally meant to be the director of the film, as Gus van Sant was signed on to do it. You know, Good Will Hunting, Drugstore Cowboy, that one movie where Una Thurman plays the greatest hitchhiker in the world with giant thumbs, and eventually finds herself meeting multiple people, including Keanu Reeves, Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi from The Karate Kid), and a group of radicalesbians who like in the Great Plains, coexisting with a group of critically endangered whooping cranes to whom they;’ve fed peyote, while also opposing the intentions of an evil feminine hygiene product company that seeks to take over the land for their factories? YOU KNOW, THAT MOVIE?
It’s called Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, and I wasn’t even slightly exaggerating with that summary, I SWEAR.
Anyway, he couldn’t do it, and Joel Schumacher also passed on it eventually, so they asked Ang Lee if he’d do it. After CTHD and Hulk, dude was on his way to retire, but after he cried at the end of the script, he accepted the job. AND HISTORY WAS MADE
Before I get into it, I should probably frank about something. I’m a cissexual, heterosexual man in a straight relationship with my girlfriend. She says hi, by the way. Here she is, a massive Jake Gyllenhaal fan, getting ready to watch this movie for the first time with me:
Isn’t she lovely? Anyway, just thought I’d be totally transparent about that. Incidentally, I remember when this film came out, as well as the fervor around it. This was JUST as the gay marriage debate was EXPLODING into the public scene, so this was obviously quite the talking point at the time.
Anyway, shall we find out who’s not going to quit whom? SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Recap
Cowboys Ennis del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) are waiting outside of a trailer, with Ennis having just arrived on a truck that reminded me of Optimus Prime, and I’m sorry. They’ve been hired by Joe Aguirre (Randy Quaid) to look after a group of sheep and guide them over Brokeback Mountain, a fictional mountain in Wyoming.
The two finally introduce each other, with Ennis seeming considerably closed off as compared to the open Jack Twist. They head to a bar, where the two get to know each other a but better Jack’s an occasional shepherd, but highly involved in rodeos throughout the year. Ennis, meanwhile, is a regular ranchhand at his family’s farm.
Time for sheep-herding, as the two guide their flock of sheep on horseback, with soft country guitars playing in the background over all of it. And I gotta say, the music combined with the visuals is giving me this real sleepy ambience vibe that I 100% would watch specifically to fall asleep to. Which is not an insult by any means, by the way; it’s just super relaxing.
The two make camp with the sheep in a mountain valley, and now I want to go camping. I realize that it’s February, and I live in a place VERY non-conducive to camping, but GODDAMN this movie makes me want to go camping. In the wilderness, surrounded by bird calls and crisp mountain air, LET’S GO.
We find out that Ennis is engaged to be wed to a woman named Alma, while Jack is yearning to break free of needing to take jobs like this. And all the while, they’re eating beans, scaring away coyotes, and fending of REALLY REALLY FAT American black bears, who you could really easily scare away without too much difficulty. You ever stared at a bear while both of you were in the woods? I HAVE. And we BOTH took off from each other in opposite directions. They’re not the bravest of animals, black bears. Grizzlies, however, you don’t wanna fuck with.
Anyway, after they face off against that bear and lose their newly bought supplies, they go hunting the next day and take down an elk. Which is a LOT of venison, I tell you what! Oh, and I’m not a hunter, just to be clear, but elk are fuggin’ HUGE. Seriously, XL deer they are.
Anyway, time goes on after that, and they continue to make their way through the mountains. And they get to know each other more, sharing their rodeo experiences and family backgrounds. Ennis also opens up pretty considerably, a fact not missed by Jack. The two become friends.
My girlfriend asks an interesting question: if I had never heard of this movie in any capacity...would I have known the extent of the relationship of Ennis and Jack? And honestly...I’m legitimately not sure at this point. I think I would’ve just assumed that they’d stay close friends, but no further than that. Call that being raised in a society with heterosexual bias towards relationships, or call that me not being a natural shipper. Both are probably accurate, to be honest.
Anyway, it’s getting cold out, and Jack’s sleeping in the tent one night while Ennis is freezing his balls off outside. With Jack’s insistence, he goes inside the tent to sleep next to Jack. And then...
Oh. Well, OK. Again, though, still not sure that at this point I’d...oh wait...OH...OH.
youtube
OK. Think I’d be able to tell at this point what the movie’s about.
So, yeah, they have sex. It’s spontaneous, it’s wild, it’s heat of the moment passion...and it’s REAL awkward the next day, I tell you what. That next evening, Ennis and Jack both insist that they “ain’t queer,” and that this is “a one-shot thing they got goin’.”
Uh, boys? There’s some important evidence to the contrary that we should consider here. But, OK, it’s a different culture, this is super new to you both, I get it. I’m not one to talk on the coming out or discovery experience (again, straight cis dude over here), but I understand that there’s some inherent denial. But still, they continue their relationship as is, for the time being.
Which is not as private as they thought, as Joe Aguirre observes them chasing each other naked on the mountain from afar. Whoops. Well, it doesn’t matter as much, as they still have a job to do until summer ends. And that job continues. They encounter another herd of sheep that gets tangled up with theirs, snow falls on the mountain and they have to deal with that, etc.
Then one day, the two need to head out. Jack goes to fetch Ennis, who’s moping on a hillside about something. He does this play lasso thing, which seems cute...
...until it turns into a full on brawl right there on the hillside. OK. Well. Some heavy denial going on here, I think, especially on Ennis’ part. Which is somewhat understandable, given the culture, and the fact that Ennis is engaged. Oh, by the way, hello infidelity. GodDAMN IT. Escaped you for TWO MOVIES IN A ROW, and you’re back rearing your ugly head.
Anyway, the job is done soon, and Aguirre’s not exactly happy with them, as they’ve apparently lost some sheep and picked up some from the other herd’s flock accidentally. With a light rebuke from Aguirre, the two part ways with not much else said. Jack asks if Ennis will come back the next summer, and Ennis reminds him that he’s getting married that fall. But as Ennis leaves...
Huh. Interesting reaction, that. Well, in the next scene, Ennis gets married to Alma Beers (Michelle Williams), and they seem to have a very happy relationship. They have two daughters together in a pretty small amount of time. The next summer, Jack tries to get a job with Joe Aguirre once again, but is refused on account of his relationship with Ennis on the mountain...kind of.
See, here’s the thing. Joe rebukes Jack for having their relationship on the mountain, leaving the dogs to babysit the sheep, rather than do the job they were hired for. And, uh...he’s not wrong, honestly. Yeah, OK, there’s definitely some homophobia laced in there, obviously, but they were hired to watch the sheep, and we only really saw them do that once or twice. So, yeah, sorry to say, but Joe’s not entirely unjustified in not rehiring Jack.
At a Fourth of July festival, Ennis brings his wife and daughters to see the fireworks, when a couple of bikers antagonize the crowd as a whole. This results in Ennis telling them to stop, and a fight takes place, with Ennis IMMEDIATELY taking out the two bikers, with little effort. Anger issues there, Ennis?
Jack returns to the rodeo, with new other options for money. He’s clearly also coming to terms with his own sexuality, as seen when he not so subtly hits on a cowboy at the bar. However, he also meets a young woman, a barrel racer named Lureen Newsome (Anne Hathaway), whom he seems to get along with fairly quickly at a rodeo. They dance together at the bar that night, and, uh...park.
And that, of course, leads to their eventual marriage and parentage as well. Looks like Lureen’s parents arent the biggest fans of Jack, though. Sure that’s going to lead to a healthy relationship down the road.
Been about 4 years since Brokeback Mountain, and this is punctuated by Jack paying a visit to Ennis’ place, which Ennis is told about by Alma. He seems...very anious, waiting nervously for a day to see him. But he finally arrives, and the two embrace happily. And then...
Oh, and Alma sees? Sure, sure, oh, and they go to a motel IMMEDIATELY? Oh, OK, OK, infidelity? Yuuuuuuupyupyupyupyupyup, halfway point? Yeah, sure, see you in Part 2. Geez.

Hulu New Releases: July 2021
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg, we heard you like anthologies so we put an anthology in your anthology so you can anthologize while you anthologize.”
The day after American Horror Stories premieres is the release date for McCartney 3,2,1 – a docuseries about Paul McCartney. Peter Jackson’s epic The Beatles: Get Out docuseries is coming to Disney+ in November so hopefully this will be a nice amuse-bouche.
Here is everything else coming to Hulu this month.

Shield Farms
Okay so here’s a little something I dug up just recently and thought I’d share with you all. Beats me if I’ll ever finish it but I figured it was pretty good and you all might want to see it. It’s a Stucky AU (what else lmao) about horses and the desert, both of which are things I have personal experience in.
Let me know what you think! Also if you have any ideas for where this should go lol I need all the help I can get.
Steve wakes up in a cold sweat on top of his duvet, again, and resolutely can not go back to sleep. A glance at the clock tells him it’s 2:45 in the morning, a good two hours before anyone else is going to be conscious. He huffs, resigned to a fate of laying in bed until the sun’s light peeks over the desert horizon out his window.
The nightmare had been no different than it was every other night. Bright pinpricks of light flashed behind his eyelids, the heavy roar of gunfire and screaming echoing in his ears. Monty, Morita, Jones, Falsworth, and Dum-Dum. His team, his unit, his brothers-in-arms. Their faces, twisted up in agony, each shot somewhere bad, each losing blood faster than Steve can stop it. He rushes to dress their wounds, along with a field nurse in her own fatigues, and they even get the men out of the enemy's’ line of fire. But the grenade flies in and Steve sees it too late, too late to do anything but turn his back and cover his head with his elbows. That’s always where the dream ends, either with his screaming or silent, terrified shaking.
He usually lies there a while simply to regain control over his emotions.
It’s an hour later when he begins to think about his day ahead. Tony said he’d go check out the new trailer company today, a higher-end service recommended to Steve after their previous driver was pulled over for driving drunk on his way back from Kentucky. The whole mess had been horrible, a PR shitshow if they’d ever seen one. Tony also said he’d check up on Revenant, the stallion Shield Farms was going to breed with Macy’s Day, their best mare. Revenant is a behemoth from a farm across the county, a black thoroughbred with a mean streak in him but the sire of some of the fastest horses in Del Mar. If Steve can land this collaboration with Asgard it’ll be a win on both sides, as more owners will line up to mix genes with both Macy’s and Revenant.
There’s also the whole water situation. Due to the fact that the drought and forest fires have baked the land and soaked up all the water, the State of California has begun regulating how much water places like Shield Farms can use. There can’t be any more dripping hoses, unattended spigots, or dumping of perfectly good washing water. Nat’s handling that one, emailing the State to get special permits during race season when water is needed most. But the government is being very strict about the water usage, which means more headaches for Steve because he’ll have to keep reminding everyone not to waste any water whatsoever, thank you very much. He’ll have to put laminated signs up. He hates laminating things, makes him feel like a third-grade teacher.
Steve’s not too focused on the upcoming dressage show in Escondido, as he knows Wanda and Sharon are working their asses off as always. They’ve won regional titles the last five years, and Wanda even made it to second in Nationals a few years back. They’re aiming even higher this summer, for not only Nationals but International competitions as well.
Steve runs through his list of things to do. Balance accounts, pay bills, check up on the boarders’ payments, hire new trainer…
Hire new trainer. Fuck, that’s right, Hodge walked out last week. Steve was almost glad when that happened, even as dramatic as it had seemed. The guy was a bully to horses and people. It’d been Tony’s idea in the first place to hire him. He’d had a resume a mile long, ranging from working as a mustang wrangler to training at farms like Calumet and Gainesway in Kentucky. But just last week he’d had a tantrum about the construction of the arena (as if there was any way in high heaven to change that), and Steve had very bluntly told him to either suck it up or leave. Gilmore Hodge had chosen the latter.
But now they need a new trainer. A specialty trainer, to boot. Someone willing to work with the worst of the worst.
Thoroughbreds are notoriously moody. They’re bred to be fast, to race, which comes along with it high energy and a larger chance for genetics to go wrong. Breed a gentle mare with a hot-headed sire, you could get one disposition or the other, and vice versa. There’s always foals who grow up to be too excitable and/or dangerous to be used in a prestigious setting, but Steve’s never believed in giving up on anything. Hence the reason why he’s always got a trainer on hand to deal with the reject pile, make them into something someone could potentially buy as a project horse. Or, when Shield periodically invests in a mustang, someone to smooth out the first few weeks before a trainer more suited to the horse’s intended purpose would come in. Get the horse friendly and halter trained, as well as make note of the tics and buttons one shouldn’t push.
In other words, they need a very specific skill set. And nerves of steel.
Natasha probably knows someone, he thinks. She brought in Sam, Clint, America, and Wanda, some of their best people. Steve would still be in some studio apartment in Carlsbad, making just enough on commissions to scrape by, if it weren’t for her. If she hadn’t pulled him up by the bootstraps and forced him to see his own true potential, and that he didn’t have to refuse what was his out of spite. That it was fucking idiotic to refuse what was lawfully his out of spite. He owes Natasha his entire life, and trusts her to know where to go.
Steve looks over at the clock again. It reads 4:00 A.M. and he can just see the beginnings of color in the sky. He sits up and stretches, fully awake now.
His clothing of choice this morning is Adidas soccer pants (a gift from Nat on his birthday last year), a gray tank that fits tightly over his chest, and his running shoes. A morning run is essential to his routine, it gets him going and ready to face the day. Besides, how else will he stay in shape if all he ever does is sit cooped up in his office doing bills? Steve decides to see if Tony knows anyone that could help out with bookkeeping. That could be very useful.
His breakfast consists of granola and strawberries in plain yogurt with some orange juice. No one else seems to be up as he moves around the kitchen, which isn’t surprising. Tony usually gets up next after Steve, around five. Steve’ll already be on his run by then.
His route goes along the entire circumference of the farm, doubling back behind the stables and winding off into the orange and lemon grove. It follows a trail along the irrigation system, then out of the trees and up into the foothills. Steve usually follows the dirt trails back to the main road and arrives back at Shield in time to help out with morning feeding and water-checks.
He sets off from the main house as soon as he’s done rinsing out his breakfast dishes, and jogs down the front steps with his earbuds in and phone strapped safely to his bicep. The peaceful tenor of Jim Croce’s voice sets the mood of the morning; surrounded by glowing mountains and the sharp aroma of sage, Steve is all alone in his thoughts.
Ever since he was a kid, Steve has always loved the desert he grew up in. Southern California isn’t exactly a forgiving place, what with the temperatures that soar above 110 in summer and wildfires that rage for days on end. But Steve finds comfort in the heat, a constant force surrounding him, reminding him like the mountains do of his potential. Pushing him to do more than he thinks he can. Growing up poor meant no pool, no air conditioning, and little more than ice cubes and a box fan to keep cool. Stark claims Steve’s more comfortable in the sweltering midday sun than he is in a cool office for this reason, and he’s not incorrect. Steve prefers manual labor to desk work, and sports an impressive tan across his whole body because of it. He’s always believed in doing things himself and knows it’s the best way to get things done.
He comes to the spot where the trail curves off into the trees, and makes the turn as the song changes to something Hozier.
Steve breathes in the scent of lemon and orange. This grove is, along with the boarding stables and bets from races, one of Shield’s primary sources of income. They sell the fruit to local businesses, from bars to restaurants and cafes, as well as at various farmers’ markets. Banner runs the whole operation, as the guy’s got a thumb greener than the Green Giant’s and is scared shitless of horses. If he weren’t Steve’d offer the guy a position in the general offices, but that involves actually seeing the animals, which Bruce avoids at all costs. He’s in charge of paying the workers they hire to keep up the trees and fruit, as well as coordinating who they sell to. It gives Steve peace of mind, knowing he can go on his run through here and not worry about who’s working on what and whether or not things are going smoothly.
The grove comes right up to the base of some hills, not quite big enough to be called mountains, but still a challenge when it comes to running or biking on them. Steve likes to wind his way through, finding meandering paths that only fit one vehicle or a pair of horseback riders in the rare off-chance that someone comes up this way.
His head is full of music, his favorite Beatles song just beginning, as he rounds a curve and slows down at the sight in front of him.
A rusted blue pickup sits idle off on the shoulder, a faint trail of smoke leading from the engine just barely visible in the early morning sunlight.
Doesn’t have a point of view
Knows not where he’s going to
Isn’t he a bit like you and me?
Steve tugs the earbuds out of his ears and lets them hang over the collar of his shirt as he approaches the truck. Just barely he can hear someone moving around on the gravel, still out of his line of sight but footsteps eerily loud in the otherwise silent area. It’s almost unnerving, this unfamiliar truck on such an unused road at this time of day. Steve braces himself, tensing, ready to fight off some guy with a cleaver or similar.
He comes around the side of the truck to see something he wasn’t expecting.
A man, not much older than him, is muttering to himself something intelligible and running a hand through his long, black-brown hair. He’s pacing, cold eyes fixed on the engine which by now Steve can see is steadily releasing smoke. The guy seems utterly distraught, scared, even, so much so that he hasn’t noticed Steve yet.
Steve clears his throat. “Need any help, there?”
The man stops dead in his tracks and his head whips up, hand retreating lightning-fast from his brown locks. He looks like a deer caught in headlights, blue eyes almost glowing.
Steve nods to the engine. “That doesn’t look too good. I know a mechanic, I can get ‘ya a discount too. Just gotta throw ‘er in neutral and push a couple miles.”
The man swallows audibly, arms hanging awkwardly at his sides. Steve can see defined muscle under his white t-shirt, from his abdomen to his chest to his arms and shoulders. He’s wearing blue jeans as well, work-worn Levis by the looks of it. Steve raises an eyebrow expectantly.
“Uh, yes. That would - that would be nice, thank you.” A Russian accent rolls off the man’s tongue, thick and silky and deep. Steve nods, hoping the dim morning light hides the heat on his face at the sound of the man’s voice. The man closes the hood, then climbs into the cab to shift the truck into neutral. He hops out with catlike grace, more agile than anyone has any right to be at five thirty in the morning. Together they move to the rear bumper, one on either side of the trailer hitch. Before they begin pushing, Steve holds out his hand to the stranger.
“I’m Steve, good to meet you.”
The man takes his hand and shakes, even if it is tentative. “Likewise. You can call me Bucky.”
Bucky. An undeniably American name, for someone so obviously foreign. Steve wonders if it’s a nickname, or if it’s even his name at all; maybe it’s just the first thing that popped into his head.
He doesn’t miss the uncertain gleam in Bucky’s eyes, or the way he’s the first one to let go of the handshake.
-
The truck is heavy, as trucks usually are, so by the time they’ve made it to Peggy’s shop both men are glistening with sweat. Bucky’s breath is labored next to him, and Steve imagines his own is much the same.
“To what do I owe the pleasure of two fine men this early in the morning?” Peggy’s British accent floated through the garage, and Steve huffed a grin. Trust Peggy to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed no matter the time of day. He’d known her ever since he got home from Afghanistan, from the moment he’d walked in looking for a repairman for his convertible. He’d been in town with Nat, looking at the old Rogers place (a run-down farmhouse and barn at the time, within eleven months it had become Shield Farms), when his beloved VW had sputtered to a halt right outside Peggy’s door. The rest was, as they say, history.
“We’ve got a pickup problem, Pegs. Was on my morning run and came across Bucky here, who was looking pretty worse for wear. Decided to help ‘im out and bring his truck here. It was smoking like this -” he jerks his thumb over his shoulder, at the engine in question “- when I got there.”
Peggy hums, emerging from behind a tractor with a crease between her brows. She’s got grease on her hands and coveralls, but somehow her face and makeup are as flawless as always. Steve’ll never understand how she manages it.
Bucky’s been silent the whole time. He stands slightly off to the side, arms crossed over his chest.
Peggy looks at him. “What exactly happened, and when?”
Bucky shrugs. “I was driving along the road Steve found me on, and the engine started sp - spewing this white smoke. The engine overheating symbol came on, too. I pulled over immediately and opened the hood. All I could see was the smoke and some liquid leaking, but I’m not experienced enough to know from where.”
Steve noticed Peggy’s brows bounce up at hearing Bucky’s accent. He wants to hear it forever, wants to record Bucky singing Hey Jude or Carolina In My Mind and listen to it for hours on end. It reminds him of fancy hotels in LA, all bright lights and red wine and jazz music. He could drown in Bucky’s voice, lose himself in it. Steve pictures sitting in his living room at home and listening to Bucky read anything, fuck, he could read the dictionary and Steve would listen with rapt attention. He wonders what it’d sound like in the morning, or late at night, or in the middle of -
Steve is pulled from his imaginings by the sound of Peggy’s voice. “- be two or three days before I can get the correct parts, and another after that to get your truck fixed. Is that alright?”
He sees Bucky nod once. Peggy must have diagnosed the problem and gotten Bucky to agree to a price, because they separate, Bucky to the front desk and Peggy to the truck. Steve trails after Bucky.
He’s sitting in a cushioned chair, filling out a form on his thigh. Steve drops down across from him. Bucky doesn’t look up, just keeps scribbling away. Steve wonders, not for the first time, where exactly Bucky is from, and where he’s going that he can afford to stop for four days before arriving. His truck has a New York license plate, but somehow Steve gets a feeling that’s not where Bucky comes from. Maybe his intuition is wrong. It rarely is, though, and this fact is what got him promoted to Captain within his first four years in the Army.
He decides to take a risk, just because he can.
“Hey, Bucky, so, uh, I was wondering if you’ve got a place to stay? The motels around here are nice, as far as motels go, but I’ve got an extra room at my place if you want.”
Bucky looks up from his writing, ice blue eyes narrowed ever so slightly, as if questioning Steve’s intent. He takes a few long moments to reply.
“How much must I pay you?”
Steve immediately shakes his head. “No, no, pal. No need to pay me. This isn’t charity, just thought you might like a place nicer than a motel.”
Bucky contemplates that, obviously weighing his options in his mind. “You are sure?”
Steve nods, crossing his arms. “Of course. You can stay as long as you need.”
At that, Bucky gives him a look, something direct and it makes Steve shift nervously. Does Bucky think he’s taking advantage of him? Steve really hopes not, because not only does he know how dirty motels around here are, but because this could be an opportunity to get to know someone new. A friend.
Just then, Bucky nods sharply. “Alright. I’ll stay with you until Miss Carter has fixed my truck.”
Peggy walks in, almost as if on cue. “You nearly finished, Bucky?”
He goes back to the papers, signing here and there, and Steve watches with a small smile on his face.

(Photo by Jimmy McIntyre - Editor HDR One Magazine, License: CC BY-SA 2.0,
(Photo by Bair175, License: CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons
(Photo by CEphoto, Uwe Aranas, License: CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons
(Photo by CEphoto, Uwe Aranas, License: CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons
(Photo by Guillaume, License: CC BY 2.0, 圖片來源)
(Photo by mckaysavage, License: CC BY-SA 2.0,
(Photo by Olaf Tausch, License: CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons
(《Knossos Bull-Leaping Fresco》, Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, Wikimedia Commons
(Photo by Stegop, © Jose Mario Pires / CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons
(Photo by Danbu14, License: CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons
(Photo by Olaf Tausch, License: CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons
(Photo by Brocken Inaglory, License: CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons
(Photo by National Park Service Digital Image Archives,
(Photo by Eric Tessmer, License: CC BY 3.0, 圖片來源)
(Photo by Stan Shebs, License: CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons
(Photo by Daniel Ramirez from Honolulu, USA, License: CC BY-SA 2.0,
(Photo by LANOEL, License: CC BY-SA 3.0,
(Photo by Daria, License: CC BY-SA 3.0,
(Photo by Marcel Urech, License: CC BY-SA 2.0,
(Photo by Malagalabombonera, License: CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia Commons
(Photo by Maksym Kozlenko, License: CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia Commons
(Photo by Maksym Kozlenko, License: CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia Commons
(Garden of the Sleeping Giants)等。
(Photo by Jaejay77, License: CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia Commons
(Photo by Jaejay77, License: CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia Commons
(Photo by Rickard Törnblad, License: CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia Commons

San Diego is one of the best places in the world to be in the summer season whether you live here or are on a San Diego vacation. During the summer of 2019, things to do in San Diego with kids include some new events in addition to our usual, seasonal ones.
It’s by no means a complete list so if you have ideas, please leave them in the comments.
1. Watch an Outdoor Movie (Parks, Beach, or USS Midway)
This summer, make it a plan to watch one of our outdoor movies. The Summer Movies in the Park initiative began several years ago to draw attention to local parks. It’s been such a huge success that venues like the USS Midway are participating. What a unique opportunity to watch a movie from the deck of a famous aircraft carrier!
Other opportunities to watch a movie al fresco include a series shown on the Botanical Lawn by the San Diego Museum of Art that highlights themes incorporated into recent gallery installations.
Watch a movie at the beach, hosted by Hotel Del Coronado. Sit on the sand or arrive early to secure a Del Beach chair rental. VIP Movie packages include s’mores, two Del Beach chairs and a Del Beach day bed (reserve in advance, $300).
2. Grab Tickets for the San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights
Bayside Summer Nights is the San Diego Symphony’s outdoor summer concert series (Summer Pops) at the Embarcadero Marina Park South. I can’t tell you enough how much I recommend this experience for the entire family as it’s one of our favorite summer activities in San Diego. You’ll see a beautiful sunset over the San Diego Bay during the concert while sipping wine or noshing on gourmet fare.
Concerts this year feature the likes of the B-52s, Chaka Khan, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and more. Grab your friends with kids and go for some fun family time (Or, go for date night). Tip: Bring glow sticks for the kids and check out their new ticket packages.
3. Explore the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park
La Jolla is home to a unique underwater park that is full of marine life. The San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park is outlined by seven sea caves, including Sunny Jim, the only sea cave in the West that is accessible by land (via the Cave Store on Coast Blvd.). Their history is an interesting one as some were used to smuggle booze during prohibition.
Take a guided snorkeling tour or rent a kayak at one of the vendors in La Jolla Shores.
4. See the La Jolla Leopard Sharks
La Jolla is home to the largest aggregation of leopard sharks in the world and it’s possible to enjoy them in even knee-deep water. Females come to incubate in warm waters near The Marine Room restaurant on La Jolla Shores beach.
Yes, they’re safe to be around. Numbers peak in July and August so plan to paddle out on SUP or kayak for a look. You can also snorkel and swim among them (minimize kicking to avoid scaring them away).
In honor of annual leopard shark season, Birch Aquarium offers multiple opportunities to snorkel with a Birch Aquarium naturalist.
5. Go Grunion Running
Yes! The grunion are running on various days all summer long. Grunion runs occur late at night so the activity suits tweens and teens best. Check the calendar and note when its open or closed season. Closed season means that there is no fishing allowed. Open season means you can actually catch them with a valid fishing license. Tip: It’s more fun with a headlamp to see the fish versus risking your phone over water or sand.
6. Sleep at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, USS Midway Museum, or Maritime Museum
Looking for a cool overnight thing to do in San Diego with kids this summer? Did you know that you can glamp with the animals at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park?
Themed overnights provide an opportunity to sleep (safely) near animals, enjoy educational programming, and participate in special close-up encounters. Don’t stress about having camping gear as it can be provided. The Roar and Snore Safari offers several tent options (including deluxe cabins with beds).
Sleepover at the USS Midway Museum during youth, family, and movie night Overnight Adventures. You’ll dine like crew in the galley, sleep on sailor bunks, and participate in unique behind-the-scenes activities.
Join the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s Family Overnight on the Star of India on June 22.
7. Ride Water Slides at Aquatica San Diego
San Diego’s seasonal water park is open on select dates from May 24–October 6. All ages have something to do at Aquatica San Diego between high-speed thrill rides and a special area for kids no taller than 48″. Reserve a private cabana or lounger, eat funnel cakes and California-inspired food (craft beer and frozen margaritas for 21+), and lounge in the lazy river. There are several ways to buy discount Aquatica San Diego tickets.
Shortcut to the Most Popular Ticket
Discounted Single Day Aquatica Tickets.
Save and go straight to the gate.
8. Look for Special Theme Park/Museum Experiences
So, maybe you already have an annual San Diego Zoo membership or a Balboa Park Explorer pass. Scour their websites to find additional programming to take advantage of as these attractions offer many, many edutainment opportunities led by experts in their fields.
Fleet Science Center has Saturday Science Club for kids on the second Saturday of each month.
Join Birch Aquarium for their long list of summer camps.
San Diego Museum of Natural History offers hikes, toddler story time and more. Check their family event calendar.
The list goes on.
9. Visit Balboa Park on Friday Nights
Be sure to check the Balboa Park event calendar for a Food Truck Fridays between May 31–September 27 where several museums stay open late, food trucks line Plaza de Panama, and musical performers entertain.
10. Explore a New-to-You San Diego Museum
Why not visit a museum that you haven’t been to before? Many San Diego museums also offer extended summer hours. Visit the San Diego Museum Council’s list of museums and pick one that is new-to-you.
Don’t forget about Residents Free Tuesdays where San Diego residents receive free admission to a rotating list of Balboa Park museums on Tuesdays. And, if you expect to visit two or more museums or attractions within 30 days, consider the Build-Your-Own Go San Diego Card.
11. Hike Torrey Pines
The trails of Torrey Pines State Park are fantastic for those who want a bit of outdoor exercise but they are easily explored at a leisurely pace with kids. The views of the Pacific are fantastic and between the flora and fauna, there’s quite a bit of fun stuff to look at.
Food isn’t allowed but you could picnic on the beach or grab a sandwich at the Torrey Pines Gliderport afterward.
12. Ride a Surrey
Have you ever seen those multiple passenger bikes cruising down San Diego boardwalks? These surreys are available for the public to rent by the hour in front of the Hilton San Diego Resort (Mission Bay), Hotel Del Coronado, Loews Coronado Bay, and other resorts mostly via Action Sport Rentals. It’s another fantastic and fun way to explore.
13. Ride an Aquacycle on Mission Bay
Speaking of fun rentals, wouldn’t the kids get a kick out of riding an aquacycle with you on top of the water. They basically look like a giant floating tricycle. We haven’t done it, so it’s on our list for something to do in San Diego with kids this summer.
The same venues that offer water sports rentals also usually offer stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, Jet Skis and other fun things to do in the water. You may also try jetpacking. Carlsbad Lagoon rentals on Agua Hedionda lagoon also has aquacycles.
14. Fly a Kite
Kite flying is not a lost art and it’s a great free thing to do in San Diego with kids this summer. Find green space (there is plenty) around Mission Bay, South Carlsbad State Beach, Dog Beach (when not crowded), or a park near you to fly a kite.
REI has kites but you could always head to a kite store like Kite Flite in Seaport Village. Make sure that the kite is kid-friendly and that you are careful not to fly it over roads, over people or near power lines.
15. Go on a Picnic
Enjoy the great outdoors by going on a picnic with family and friends. Pack a lunch (or, heck, grab some awesome sandwiches for takeout) and head to a local park with picnic facilities, the beach, Balboa Park, or wherever you like to eat outside.
Bundle this activity with kite flying and other outdoor fun to knock several to-do’s off your summer bucket list at once. My picnic to-do includes nabbing one of the green huts along Ellen Browning Scripps Park in La Jolla in time for the sunset.
16. Attend an Outdoor Concert
A number of cities throughout San Diego County (Del Mar, Carlsbad, Coronado, Santee, El Cajon, Mission Hills and more) offer summer outdoor concerts that are free to attend. There is usually plenty of space for the kids to run around, food for sale, raffle prizes and more.
Check the list here, which also includes some fun ticketed options.
17. Attend Raptor School (La Jolla, Ramona, and Alpine)
This is one of the more unique things to do in San Diego with kids this summer though it’s available year-round. Total Raptor eXperience offers owl encounters and falconry classes for all ages at the Torrey Pines Gliderport in La Jolla and their main facilities in Ramona.
We’ve taken a basic falconry class with Sky Falconry. They offer hawk walks, falconry classes, and more at their ranch in Alpine. These classes not only provide unique interactions with raptors but also teach you about how our actions impact amazing animals like these.
18. Support San Diego’s Only Rollerskating Rink
It’s been in business for over four decades and the historic building is threatened by closure. So, get out there and roller skate with the family at Skateworld. It’s great exercise, gets kids off their electronics and its super fun. They’re offering rollerskating camps, too.
19. Take an Electric Bike Tour
This idea will suit the teens in your life (typically ages 16 and older) but an electric bike tour is an excellent way to see San Diego. This summer, I’d like to take the SoCal Riviera Tour of La Jolla and Mount Soledad with San Diego Fly Rides. I see these riders cruising my neighborhood on occasion and it looks like so much fun. Plus, there is way less pedaling (if you want) on an electric bike.
20. Visit a California Mission
This tip is especially relevant when kids are studying missions in 4th grade. But, it’s just as easy to pop a baby in a carrier for a nice walk around a new place.
San Diego County is home to the largest of the 21 California missions, Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside. It is open daily for self-guided tours of the onsite museum and grounds, but do check their calendar for a list of events including behind-the-scenes tours, retreats, cooking classes, and workshops.
Mission San Diego de Alcala, which overlooks Old Town San Diego, was California’s first mission. Visitors can explore the grounds, attend mass or sit for quiet reflection in the gardens. An audio tour is available.
Or, it is incredibly easy to take an Amtrak train to San Juan Capistrano. The mission there is within a very short walk of the station and such a cool day trip.
21. Tour the Stuart Collection
Take kids on somewhat of a scavenger hunt to find the various sculptures and art installations in the Stuart Collection, a public art display that is sprinkled throughout UC San Diego. Stop into one of the casual campus restaurants that are open during summer for lunch or a snack. Read more about the Stuart Collection.
22. Have Afternoon Tea
If the kids are feeling fidgety in the late afternoon and you’re not feeling like an outdoor activity, how about a proper afternoon tea with scones, tea sandwiches, and sweets? Choices include:
Shakespeares Corner Shoppe
Fairmont Grand Del Mar
The Westgate Hotel
23. Attend a Luau
The Catamaran is hosting its annual summer luaus on the beach on Tuesdays and Fridays. The buffet menu includes a long list of Hawaiian favorites such as Kalua Roast Pig. Enjoy live music, lei making, and more without the long flight.
24. Take a Surfing Lesson
San Diego is home to some truly awesome summer surf camps that you can sign up for on a weekly basis or book for a half-day. They’re great for kids ages 5 and above (sometimes, even a bit younger) and adults can join in the fun, too. This is something I always encourage families who are visiting San Diego to look into. Try Surf Diva Surf School in La Jolla or San Diego Surfing School in Pacific Beach.
25. Tour the San Diego Bay
Get out on the water with the family with one of these suggestions:
Take a Seal Tour in the amphibious bus-boat that goes from land to water in a snap
Drive your own mini speedboat on a tour with Speedboat Adventures
How about Flagship Cruises harbor cruise?
Take the Coronado ferry between downtown and Coronado
Zoom around the bay in the high-speed Patriot Jet Boat
26. Pick a Pier
When was the last time you took a walk on one of our piers? Whether it’s Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach Pier, or Oceanside Pier, they’re fabulous places for ocean views and sunsets. Did you know that Oceanside Pier is the longest wooden pier on the West Coast?
27. Plan a San Diego Staycation
I’m a huge fan of being a tourist at home. Visit a part of San Diego that you’ve never actually explored before. Popular staycation hotels include:
Fairmont Grand Del Mar
Omni La Costa Resort and Spa
Hotel Del Coronado
Rancho Valencia
Cape Rey Carlsbad
Pier South
28. Go to the Beach
While this is an obvious thing to do in San Diego with kids this summer, it has to be mentioned. Top beach picks include Coronado Municipal Beach, Law Street beach, La Jolla Shores beach, Del Mar beach, and Moonlight beach for family-friendly amenities.
Go luxe at the beach by renting a cabana at Del Beach in front of the Hotel Del Coronado. You’ll love the margaritas while the kids will love the shade and food. You don’t have to be a hotel guest to book one either.
29. Join a Beach Cleanup
Check the calendars for I Love a Clean San Diego and San Diego Surfrider Foundation for opportunities to join an organized beach cleanup. Summer equals more people on our beaches, and inevitably more trash.
30. Do Volunteer Work at Home and Elsewhere
San Diego is full of opportunities for kids to get involved in community service.
San Diego Humane Society needs kids (and adults) to make various DIY projects like no-sew blankets for dogs, pom-poms for cats and more at home.
The San Diego Food Bank offers a myriad of ways for small groups and individuals to volunteer.
Feeding San Diego offers opportunities for ages 6 and older to fill backpacks for kids in need, sort food and more.
That’s the list of my things to do in San Diego with kids this summer. Make your plans now, fall will be here before you know it!
