Power Rangers Dino Charge: End of Season Review

So I thought making reviews for every Power Rangers season that I've seen would be fun! (And I'm ignoring the physics lab report I have to do lmao)

Don't really expect anyone to read this but eh this is for fun

Fave Character: Prince Phillip III of Zandar. He's my little bitch babygirl <3

Fave Ship: Chiley!!! Green/black ships my beloved. My fave rarepair is Phillip/Ivan. The gay devotion in knight/prince ships is peak

Fave Non-Romantic Relationship: Kendall, James, and Phillip. Auxillary Rangers ftw!! (fuck Zenowing)

Fave Episode: The Tooth Hurts! Chiley ep of all time

General Thoughts:

Dino Charge was the first season of Power Rangers that I'd ever seen, and was the thing that got me into the fandom, so I'll always have a soft spot for it. But even rewatching it recently has it hold up.

The characters in this show are what I think makes it one of the best Power Rangers seasons, and the best Neo Saban. All of them are so great, and while they never got too much depth (curse you adults that think kids can't handle complicated things) but they're still such interesting people. Dino Charge had a large cast, and they didn't always handle that many people that well (the auxiliary Rangers unfortunately get little to no attention), but the cast, in my opinion, is what made it so great.

The main cast is so lovable. Tyler, while he can be a little bland at times, is a little cutie so he's great. Chase is an interesting character that's very fun to watch. Koda is the heart of the team and he's a perfect little angel. Riley is our canonically gay (via the actor) overachiever representation. Shelby is also overachiever representation, with academic pressure from parents too! Then you have Ivan. Our loyal and chivalrous knight out of time. The gay devotion is real with this one.

I'm going to cut myself off here, because you probably get the point. I love the cast of Dino Charge. Barring Zenowing and Keeper. They're just useless to me

And because these characters are interesting people, they also have such fun dynamics with each other. I love that the Rangers really feel like a found family. You can examine any relationship between the Rangers and have something to talk about. I mentioned Kendall, Phillip and James earlier as my fave platonic dynamic, but there are a lot more to look at. Tyler and Chase as himbo bros, Riley and Shelby as gay besties , Koda, Kendall and Chase with their familial bond as they were the first Rangers together... they're all great.

And the villain situation in Dino Charge was.... interesting.

The concept of fighting a bounty hunter that captures his monsters from all over the universe is cool, especially because it gives an explanation as to why the monster of the week fights so hard - they'd win their freedom if they brought back an energem. But Sledge himself was kind of a boring villain to me. He never actually has any kind of motivation for getting the energems - we don't know if he wants them for universal domination or to sell them to the highest bidder. So he felt kind of flat to me. I did love Poisandra, Curio, Wrench and Fury though. I liked that they had more personality. And Poisandra is my girl and I love her. She should've gotten a redemption arc. Fury was also an interesting character because of his rivalry with Ivan. I do wish they explored it more, but what we did get was cool.

And after Sledge was defeated, we got Heckyl and Snide! Quite obviously a Jeckyll and Hyde reference, these two were much more interesting to me than Sledge. Heckyl's backstory is so sad 😭 and I love him more for it. The concept of a villain infiltrating the Rangers place of work and pretending to be their friend was so awesome. I wish he was a double agent for longer (and that they didn't wipe his memory of their base) but I liked it.

Then you had Arcanon for a little bit. This was so fucking stupid. Dino Charge made an original villain in Sledge, so I think they shouldn't have bothered with trying to work Arcanon in there (his Sentai counterpart was the head villain). It felt too rushed and they could've introduced the dark energem with something else.

And then surprise! Sledge again! Also hated that to be honest. They defeated him the first time. Why bring him back.

Technically I have to if I want to talk about Dino Charge (unfortunately) so all I'm going to say is that it's stupid and I hate it. Ivan and Koda never leave and they never fuck up the timeline with that dumbfuck idea thanks <3

(Genuinely there's a discussion to be had about the character assassination that was committed by making Koda and Ivan - who had accepted that they were men out of time and living lives with their new family - went back in time for some fucking reason, but that's for another post)

Now! Onto something I actually want to talk about! The Sentai adaptation vs the Power Rangers. I've seen both, so y'all are getting my thoughts as to how well they adapted it. I think Dino Charge did an amazing job. They didn't take what happened in Kyoryuger and copy that exactly (cough cough Samurai cough cough). They made their own story and used the footage well

I also want to talk about the thing that makes Power Rangers iconic - the actual Ranger bit. I'm talking about the power source, the suits, the zords, and the Super mode.

I really liked the energems as a power source. The idea of ancient stones created at the dawn of the universe that bonded to dinosaurs, then people, is really cool. I have issues with the "energems give them immortality" bit (because I'm sad that they have to watch their friends and family die) but it really does make sense. They are bonded to something that is ancient and powerful, and there should be some side effects from that.

Now for the suits! (One could argue that the suits are more of the Sentai's influence but I'm treating them as solely Dino Charge right now). I really love the Dino Charge suits. They already get points in my book for not having fucking lips (which I hate with a burning passion), but they do look cool on their own. I love solidly coloured suits that don't have white or black pants. The helmets are also really cool, and I love the dinosaur heads incorporated in them. So the DIno Charge suits are great to me

The zords in Dino Charge are also awesome. They look really cool. I wish they could be small to hang out with their Rangers, but alas, we can't have everything 😔

The Super mode in Dino Charge was a pretty solid one. I liked that Rexy could be small to fight alongside Tyler. Don't love the white on the suit, but at least his normal suit is a nice, solid red.

So yeah! That's my Dino Charge review. Thanks for sticking around after that word vomit lol. I love this season so fucking much

So Darkest Hour is over, the MMPR main series has wrapped, so what do we do now? We......check out the adventures of this team led by a giant polar bear? Sure!

It's Power Rangers Infinity!

= For those who haven't seen the previews: our main character, Lola! She's cute, I like her a lot; even if admittedly BOOM has really been dishing out the Green Ranger girls one after another lately. (As for her last name being Navarro.....put in a pin in that for a second. Unfortunately it doesn't go where you might think it goes.)

= Obviously there's no way to prove it but moments like this kiiiiiind of feel like this was written back when BOOM figured they were finished with the PR license. It's a little too on the nose

= GIRL YOU LOOK SO GOOD

= Though I am a little annoyed because her lines here about looking for Lola for a long time made me think my theory that she was targeting her because she was related to Tyler/Shelby (or Poisandra just THOUGHT she was) was real. Unfortunately Lola's last name being Navarro isn't at all relevant (she targets Lola because she overhears that she writes PR fanfiction, so she wants Lola to make a weak team she can beat, it's a whole thing) so I guess in the end it was just an Easter Egg. I guess it's not too much of a surprise as this is set in "our" world rather than the Dino Charge world, but still, if you were going out of your way to pit a Dino Charge villain against a main character with the same last name as a Dino Charge character, you'd think that was leading up to something

= Also I just noticed Braylee's visor is shaped like a megaphone. That's cute

= Unfortunately the Poisandra Stan Society skipped out on PMC 2024. I totally would have gotten a picture with them otherwise

= Obviously as this is a one-shot book making gags out of the concept of "unlikely character archetypes as Power Rangers" the Infinity team members don't have the most complex personalities, but it's vital for you to know that the Pink Ranger, Penelope Prescott, is a lesbian. Anyway hot bear time

= I literally went into this book thinking the polar bear (Coach Kumo) would end up being a joke one-note "haha is that an ANIMAL as a ranger??" a la Yale but he actually ended up being my favorite character so uh. Yeah. Power Rangers Infinity did the whole "animal ranger" thing better than the main series. Make of that what you will

= And a look at the other teams. And okay, I'm just going to come out and say it; we did canonically have a pirate team in the show. I KNOW THEY DIDN'T DO PIRATE STUFF BUT I DON'T CARE, THEY STILL EXISTED, IT'S NOT AS OUTLANDISH AS THE HOCKEY BEAR UNIVERSE

= I do have to admit, for as much as this book tries to joke about how Poisandra isn't a threat and can't find a team weak enough for her to defeat, they're pretty casually talking about how she's basically committing mass genocide. Like their teams/universes are literally dead. I think that counts as beating them

= Proud of the book for not calling them "Paisley Force"

= Anyway actual worst part of this book is it implies Poisandra took out Curio too which SHE WOULD NEVER DO!!!!!!! THAT IS HER BESTIE!!!!!!! Sledge getting her this ship is 100% in-character though

= Poisandra has committed mass murder and kidnapping but nothing compares to the evil of committing Lola to the path of customer service

= Still a better Green Ranger reveal than M/tt

= This silly one-shot parody comic sure has a lot of death in it

= This is sweet and everything, but it kinda takes me back to how members of this fandom would uhhhh kinda harass the writers and BOOM about including their own ideas in the comic. (And the actors too. Firsthand witness to that at PMC 2024!) So to all up and coming writers and artists: please keep your submissions and pitches to professional settings

Request: “Power Rangers imagines: …Stingrage.” Fun thing about writing for monster men is you learn biology facts. Rays are batoids/batomorphi. Another fun thing is that you learn that what you think should be a word, like batomorphic, isn’t. Sting Rage/Stingrage isn’t that batomorphic, anyway. But if he’s like Vexacus down there…

Most men, even monster men, should have backed off when presented with a taser. Unsure if the alien recognized it as a weapon, you turned it on. Neither of you spoke as the sparks provided the sole artificial light in the woods. The moon was near full. Besides its effect on the tides, moonlight made it easier for predators to spot prey. And got certain ocean life in the mood. 

Despite the name, Sting Rage didn’t seem very aquatic to you. Aside from his trident. Later you’d learn his attempts at courtship were batoid. But pupiless eyes and a respirator made it impossible to tell Poisandra’s underling had been interested in you from the get-go.  

Red’s right, you thought. Sting Rage does kinda resemble an “overgrown insect.”

Maybe there was some shrimp DNA in there. What with the antennae. Truth be told, the villain interested you a little. He just had so many cool features cobbled together. Maybe they weren’t antennae and a trident, but horns and a pitchfork. The faces composing his armor evoked the screaming damned. Flames and all. What you initially figured was tubing looked corniculate up close. 

Okay, enough waxing poetic, you thought, glancing at the moon again. 

Meanwhile, Sting Rage’s thoughts on your appearance weren’t nearly as complicated. Sparks were flying and he was horny. The electronic currents you were giving off were irresistible. If he had stopped to think, Sting Rage might have realized that wasn’t bioelectricity. But the taser’s distant shock had so stimulated his ray instincts, he may have just lodged a stinger in your back and fucked you senseless anyway. If he’d suspected you were just trying to defend yourself at that moment. 

You were an acquaintance of the Rangers. Yet you’d sent out a very clear signal you wanted to mate. With him, of all choices. He stepped closer. You braced yourself to be impaled with his weapon. Then he laid his trident against a tree before continuing his advance.

With a sinking feeling, you realized the battery might run out. And he clearly had decided you weren’t a threat, as he was even removing his mask! 

Sting Rage shot you a benevolent smile. He couldn’t sense the current anymore. This would be his first time mating with a human. He wondered if it would be your first time interspecifically, too. Maybe you weren’t used to this kind of foreplay. But he was glad you initiated this. Up close, he could see how nervous you were. Male humans tended to have only one penis, right? Hopefully you wouldn’t be overwhelmed by two. 

“Please,” you pleaded, switching the taser on again. It probably looked pathetic; brandishing a weapon he clearly wasn’t afraid of while begging for your life.  

Oh no. His partner wasn’t able to produce a charge on her own. She had to use some kind of tool to gain his attention. Sting Rage’s heart swelled with pity. And desire. How thoughtful of you! Even with your apparent inexperience with his species’ copulatory habits, you were courting him! Humans didn’t have anything like an estrus. They were ready to go whenever. Yet you were coming onto Sting Rage during his mating season!  

What happened next made you drop your taser.

He ducked down and nipped at your chest. 

Before your mouth could form words, his attacked again. Even in your confusion, you could guess Sting Rage was a little frustrated by the layers.

And he was! The cups wouldn’t even let him bite your pecs through the shirt’s fabric. If he managed to satisfy you enough, get you to agree to be his mate, then you might agree to work for Poisandra. So she could take you shopping. He knew from accidentally walking in on her and Sledge that the bustier unzipped easily and the black top, which showed underboob, was very removable as well. 

“Okay,” you drawled, pocketing the taser. I clearly misread the situation.

“You can keep that out if you want,” he replied, burying his face between your tits. “If you need.”

“You’d have to get off.”

“I’m trying. If you could be so kind as to remove your bra, I can complete our mating ritual.”

“What kind of mating ritual involves a taser?”

It took him a second to put two and two together.

“That’s not a sex toy?”

“What?”
