Review: Ebony and Ivory -- Fantastic Fest 2024
Ebony and Ivory is screening as part of Fantastic Fest 2024, which runs from September 19 to September 26. Ebony and Ivory is absolute nonsense, and that isn’t entirely a bad thing. Imagine a biopic about the creative experience behind one of the best-selling duets in pop history (the Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder song of the title), then pay a back-alley surgeon to lobotomize that idea out…

BACK ROADS (2018) Grade: D+
I found it to be pretentious & poorly directed with horrible framing & camera movement. Not as dramatic as the reviews claim to be.

(Trailer) Marriage is for Better, Marriage is for Worse, Marriage is Not for Everyone in 'I Do... Until I Don't'
(Trailer) Marriage is for Better, Marriage is for Worse, Marriage is Not for Everyone in ‘I Do… Until I Don’t’
“You are ovulating.” “You have an app on your phone for my ovaries?” “The green days are fer-tile.” ‘I Do…Until I Don’t’ is a comedy investigating the concept that marriage should be a seven-year contract with an option to renew. The story is told through the lens of three couples in Vero Beach, Florida at various points in their relationships. “How often do you sleep with other people?” “All…

The Greasy Strangler (2016)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plot: Father Ronnie (Michael St. Michaels) and son Brayden (Sky Elobar) run a disco tour, when Janet (Elizabeth De Razzo) captures their attentions. So the two compete for her love, while the mysterious Greasy Strangler starts killing their clients.
Tumblr media
Review: The Greasy Strangler arrived last year to strong reviews from all the usual cult film sources, while being routinely ignored by the mainstream. And with good reason.
Let’s be honest right off the bat: The Greasy Strangler only exists for the same reason as the Human Centipede and it’s ilk, and that is to disgust people. There is no real interest in making a good, accessible film, only in committing the most disgusting acts imaginable and putting them all on a cheap, straight-to-DVD release. This is what happens when you knowingly try to make a 1980′s tributing video nasty, but do so knowingly, by way of Napoleon Dynamite and Gentlemen Broncos. Thus everybody is too aware of their roles, and the escalation of gross moments just becomes more and more forced.
This film does share certain DNA with those films; off-putting to the vast majority of the audience, and only really of value to those who get it, The Greasy Strangler nonetheless sets itself apart by eschewing their redeeming features entirely. Worse still is that it relies upon cheap tactics to try and disgust, such as nude and sex scenes with people who don’t look like typical buff Hollywood celebrities. Early on it looks as though there might be a semblance of an interesting story, but it soon gives way to a brand of ridiculousness that even some hardened cult aficionados will find hard to tolerate.
The meager rating is earned solely of technical achievements; it’s shot very well, and looks like a much better made film. It’s such a shame that it isn’t.
