The layers of tragedy in Sky’s death.
The tragedy isn’t “The Hexcore killed Sky,” it’s “No one saw Sky’s potential as a scientist in her own right until it was too late.”
Especially if the fan theory about Sky’s research being about purifying Zaun’s air with plants is right*
Viktor is dying because of the gases where he grew up, which is “exactly the sort of thing (they) wanted to fix with Hextech.” But they didn’t need Hextech to fix that! All they had to do was give Sky a chance.
I think this is also why Viktor feels so much guilt over Sky- he sees himself in her. He asked Jayce, “Do you think it was my life’s ambition to be an assistant?” It wasn’t Sky’s life’s ambition either.
Throughout Viktor’s whole life people had overlooked him. Unknowingly he had done the exact same thing to Sky. She was doomed to the fate he most feared- dying without leaving a mark on the world.
I think it sucks that Sky’s storyline follows the pattern of scientifically minded women being relegated to a subordinate position focused on supporting the careers of their male counterparts.
No I don’t think the writers are sexist but it rubs me the wrong way that the only female scientist on the show is overshadowed by her male colleagues, never gets to pursue her own career, then it’s barely addressed in the show.
*Why I think this theory is plausible:
In the alternate universe, Claggor is working on a project to make plants that purify air in the underground. AFAIK they’re the only two botanists in the series- Sky had been working on a long term project to better Zaun as well. Especially since they both grew up in the undercity, they understand how bad the pollution is there.
Also: If Viktor learned about her research, he could have assisted her with it with the precious time he had left. He could have died at peace knowing the thing that caused his disease would never again poison Zaun, and that he had a hand in improving lives like he always wanted.

I had a moment to think about it.
The heartbreak has cleared and I'm remembering a lot about Season one.
I'm remembering Viktor in particular. He was always a character I loved to discuss the most because of how....alive he is. Even though he was the one that was dying. Jayce is a bit more expressive in body language but Viktor also had a wild personality, he had a cute happy smile, he had sass, a funny sense of humour. He can get vocally upset, he voices his thoughts, he reacts.....like a person...smacking Jayce's hand away when he's upset.
Viktor is human. Viktor was human.
Viktor's different in season 2.
We've been waiting for the Machine Herald since forever, and I remember someone mentioned that the saddest thing would be to watch Viktor lose his emotion when he's always so alive and he feels deeper than anyone else does. But that's the thing, we don't even notice it. We don't even notice his feelings being stripped away because we are so relieved that he is alive. Maybe even Viktor doesn't properly notice it, but he knows something is off when Jayce hugs him and he cannot feel his touch, or the cold.
We think Viktor is channelling his depth and his love into helping people, and helping people with science is something Viktor has always wanted to do. He also greatly regrets killing Sky.
It's amazing. Like the hexcore is showing us all the parts of Viktor that we recognise and love, without letting us realise that he's lost the parts that make him human. It's like when a drug addict gets high and they look happy, oblivious and unaware of the drug killing them from the inside.

“This is amazing!” Sky gushed over the boat that he had brought that day. It wasn’t the first time she had marvelled over something he had built and it was safe to assume that it really wouldn’t be the last time either.
All Viktor could do was shrug. To insist that it was nothing never did help anyway.
“One day you’ll get to make a big one. I know it.” She hummed while putting the toy into the water after winding it up, watching as it took off at a steady pace.

if your "viktor adopts Jinx" au doesn't have this kind of vibe then I don't want it
(Not pictured: Jayce fainted when he saw the arrow sticking out of vik and they had to drag him to the emergency room)

Flower Herald Sky Art! Inspired these AU headcanons:
What if the Hexcore allowed Sky to ascend as a spirit protecting Zaun's flora? Similar to Janna, the wind spirit who looks after Zaun
Instead of Sky appearing in Viktor's consciousness on the astral plane, he stumbles across her when building the commune because he's also able to see spirits that roam the physical world.
She can also enter and exit his astral plane at will
Sky uses her energy to stimulate growth in the precious few plants that can still grow in Zaun, restoring any bit of nature she can.
While she still retains her memories and personality, she's ascended to a higher form of existence. She's interconnected with nature now, able to sense when even the smallest blade of grass pushes through the ground, when seeds first take root, when a tree is chopped down, and is one with it.
Her influence is strongest in the commune and surrounding areas, where much spiritual energy is focused. She works in tandem with Viktor.
Sky and Viktor are like Persephone and Hades. Sky is a goddess of agriculture and the spring, while Viktor is the "god of the dead" in the sense that members of his commune were once good as dead, but find a resting place in his domain. And, the commune is in the depths of Zaun, which is thematically similar to the underworld.
Some members report glimpses of the herald sitting in the fields with an ethereal flower woman.
Children especially are able to catch glimpses of Sky's presence. A brush of a flowing robe when they move a plant to sunlight. A gentle hand tucking their hair back while they tend to the garden. The tendrils of a vine curing about their finger like a small embrace.
When Viktor chooses sacrifice his humanity, Sky's spirit leaves the commune. Suddenly the peaceful haven they crafted wilts away into barren land, creating a shadow of doubt in his mind about the Glorious Evolution.
Thanks to LBBCtimeout on twitter, the original artist, for allowing me to repost their art!
