The Chosen, 4.08 "Humble"
John 13:1 (NKJV): Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

It’s really, really annoying how many women will wear bikinis and lowcut tank tops and see-through leggings and booty shorts with their buttcheeks hanging out, but then turn around and be all, “Men should be able to control themselves and stop lusting after me!” Like girl, we know why you’re dressed like that, you know why you’re dressed like that, everyone knows why you’re dressed like that. Stop pretending, lol.

Christianity arrived in South Africa with the arrival of European settlers, primarily Dutch colonists led by Jan van Riebeeck, who established a settlement at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652, bringing with them their Dutch Reformed faith, which became the dominant form of Christianity in the region;.
Tumblr media
Key points about the introduction of Christianity in South Africa:
Early settlers:Jan van Riebeeck and his Dutch East India Company crew were the first to introduce Christianity to South Africa when they landed in 1652.
Dominant denomination:The Dutch Reformed Church became the primary Christian denomination practiced by the early settlers.
Later influences:Following the Dutch, other European groups like French Huguenots also settled in the region, contributing to the diverse Christian landscape.

this is definitely a digression, but in addition to everything else, 1.2.13 seems very much like a tale of two priests: Bishop Myriel and the nameless priest on a horse.
Priest-on-a-horse is not an actively malicious guy! He just sort of doesn't care. He says, offhand, about Petit-Gervais: "He is a little stranger. Such persons pass through these parts. We know nothing of them." And when a hysterical Valjean says something that alarms him, he races off. He wants to "know nothing" of strangers passing through; he is unwilling to risk his own comfort or safety to help.
This seems like a pretty deliberate nod to the Bad Priest of the parable of the Good Samaritan, who "happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man [in need], he passed by on the other side." Not a man he knew; unpredictable and distressed; ignorable. (Hugo is really not subtle on this point; see also Jesus, saying "Depart from me, you who are cursed, [because] I was a stranger and you did not welcome me.")
Myriel is only present in Valjean's memory. But the memory of Myriel's care and mercy toward him, a stranger, a criminal, is so transformative for Valjean that Myriel is raised into the place of Christ in his mind. Parts of this chapter read like the very best of conversion literature — Saul blinded, Augustine turning — with the Bishop quite literally acting in persona christi.
"As the Bishop grew great and resplendent in his eyes, so did Jean Valjean grow less and vanish. After a certain time he was no longer anything more than a shade. All at once he disappeared. The Bishop alone remained; he filled the whole soul of this wretched man with a magnificent radiance."
compare Colossians 3:3: "For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory."
just an extremely neat contrast here, the nameless erasure of the priest who knew nothing of the stranger, the hagiographic elevation of the priest who, despite all his faults, welcomed and fed and forgave Jean Valjean.

Note
Terfs are always like like "people are always dwindling us down to our reproductive parts" and then turn around and call others "penis havers"
i’m gonna be honest here i think calling someone a “penis haver” isn’t really used by radfems/terfs much. from what i’ve seen, it’s been used as a more inclusive term instead of saying “male” or “female” to denote bio sex. /info
although they probably do use it as another way to say “male”, but in a more derogatory context. (if that makes any sense)
but they definitely do boil down women to their reproductive parts in other ways. Like for the most obvious example they’ll say shit like “women is when boob and vagina!!!!1!1!!1” (not that exact wording but you get the idea 😭)

Saint Mary Magdalene
Artist: Francesco d'Ubertino di Bartolomeo Verdi known as Bachiacca (Italian, 1494-1557)
Date: ca. 1525-1530
Medium: Oil on wood
Collection: Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy
Description
Magdalene is presented half-length and three-quarter-length, her gaze turned towards the viewer as she displays an onyx vase, an attribute often associated with her with reference to the Gospel passage (Luke 7:38) where the woman, after washing Jesus' feet with her tears, anoints them with perfumed oil. The red damask robe, contrasting with the acid green of the background, is cut at the elbow to reveal the white camisole, while the collar and sleeves are trimmed in lynx skin. The gold chain and the jewel pinned on the head complete the saint's elegant outfit, presented in the style typical of private portraiture of the early sixteenth century (a half-length cut that includes the hands, close-up perspective, fashionable clothing). This choice has led some scholars to believe that the effigy of a noblewoman, as yet unidentified, is concealed beneath Magdalene's guise.

I think the Fear and Hunger fandom overlooks the whole ancient lizardmen civilization part of the lore.
I'm especially curious about how it relates to Nosramus, his lab is just right next to a bunch of corpses, skinned by the lizardmen... How come they don't try to harm him or mess with his lab? Is Nosramus studying their ancient society? Is it a symbiotic relationship situation?

Does law school ever have a legally blonde moment
ok weirdly enough, legally blonde is BY FAR the most accurate law school movie, to the point that my professors recommend everyone watch it when we started 1L year lmao. the way it depicts law school culture is soo accurate, and all of the things elle talks about studying (like the cold calls she answers in class) are pretty spot on. i love that movie
