Kao did so well, so much better than I expected him to do with having back to back events. He did so well in fact, that he was robbed of the title.
ISU I am once again under your bed.

Useless Idea - Demo Tape from 1999
From my archive of cassette demos, a track from 1999, the tune must have been done with a Casio, I don't remember the model. Imperfect music, that will never be released on record, imperfect but full of memories and passion, maybe I will share other naive tracks. Enjoy

My delulu coping rn is that USFS doesn’t know whether Bratti/Somerville are going to be ready in time for Canada, and if they pull out Bella/Vanya get that spot, so the mid MIDA team would then get the host spot. If B/V don’t get Budapest I’m hoping it’s because they’re going to Skam (since Skam is the next weekend), but if they do get Budapest, I wonder if that’s confirmation they go to Canada in place of Bratti/Somerville. Idk this whole thing is stupid. They won the head to head, so they should get the host spot.
Tumblr media
the Flores/Desyatov fandom right now
But in all seriousness, I know I'm still new to this sport but I can't believe how complicated it is to even compete as an ice dancer. You would think that considering their scores they'd get assignments right away for at least a challenger 😑
The most upsetting thing is that Bella and Vanya have earned that host spot by now. They're the best of the middle pack of ice dancers in the US!
USFS, just send them somewhere and let them do their thing! Let them show how hard they've worked, how fantastic they are.

Next up:  Parallel Pieces of You and Me, written by Jules, with art from maxence4ever. An AU set in British Columbia, and a mountain setting, yes please!
Jules what inspired your story: Spider-Man into the Spiderverse meets all my SKAM faves, basically!  I pictured them all older, in their early twenties, first in a kind of in limbo and then in British Columbia, Canada at a snowed-in resort.
katmylittlesunshine what inspired your art: parallel love universe, connexion and magical story
The SKAM Big Bang starts June 21st! Follow us for more sneak peeks and share!

In this Young Royals post you mention that teens start their 3 year high school career the year they turn 16. Which means their last year of high school would take place when they’re 18, and they wouldn’t start university until 19.
https://at.tumblr.com/skamenglishsubs/subtext-and-culture-young-royals-season-1/l5oa8fjasrml
I’m in Canada. In Canada, the US and the UK, your final year of high school is when you’re 17. You start university (or whatever else you’re going to do after high school at 18. So does Sweden have an extra year of high school compared to those Anglosphere countries?
Finally, what is the birthday cutoff in Sweden for starting school? In most of Canada, the school year starts in September, but the age cutoff is December 31 of the year you first start school. In the UK and many US states, the school year also starts in September. But the age cutoff is August 31 of the year you start school. How does it work in Sweden?
That last question is pure trivia, but I’m curious. And couldn’t find an answer on Wikipedia.
I can't really answer your first question, because your description of Anglosphere schools is generalized and wrong, there are way more differences between countries and states and provinces than that. For example, it seems Saskatchewan does school cutoff in September instead of calendar year like the rest of Canada, Scotland does high school one year longer than England, and the US does everything, everywhere, all at once, in five more different ways.
But generally, yes. Normally you start "high school" in Sweden the year you turn 16, which means you graduate the year you turn 19, and this also means you start university in that same year.
University is also different in that you don't have the major minor thing, but instead you typically pick a programme before you apply, and go straight into that, so when I went to university last century my Master's programme was 4.5 years, not 5. That said, Sweden is a Bologna process signatory since 1999 and it appears my old programme is now 5 years long instead. 🤷‍♂️
The school cutoff is based on calendar year, which means that everyone in your class and your year has the same birthyear. This system extends to junior sports as well, and the whole thing is so ubiquitous that instead of talking about how old you are or asking others how old they are, you say what year you were born, and you ask what year someone else was born, well into adulthood.
(This never really comes up in Young Royals, but it comes up all the time in SKAM, because Norway works the same way.)

do you have any recs for good skates to watch from this season so far?
elsa i am so sorry you asked. here we go
(bolded skaters are going to the gpf)
(all links require a vpn bc isu youtube hates usa; rec using opera browser's built in free vpn)
i mainly follow singles, so i'll mostly stick with those, but for pairs stellato-dudek/deschamps are absolute breakouts featuring queen deanna who is the oldest gp medalist and oldest gp gold medalist !!! stan deanna. i rec watching their skate america skates, particularly their short. i wept
ALSO for dance by far my favorite thing i've seen is demougeot/le mercier's weird ass sad mime ex which hits EVERY time.
ANYWAY. to the shit i actually care about deeply
WOMEN
rika kihira's titanic free from sci: the nhk one was probably better technically but i saw this one in person in the front row and wept the entire time. outstanding vibes. beautiful skating.
kaori sakamoto's sia free from skam: speaking of things i saw live from the second row and wept through. that's MY world champion
mai mihara's espoo short and also her sheffield free: 30 point grand prix queen enough said
yelim kim's short and free from nhk: won nhk against an absolutely stacked lineup of women. has one of the most beautiful ina bauers in existence
honorable mentions that i'm not going to find the links for: every single thing gracie gold did at skam. listen to the audience reactions for her!!! absolutely not a dry eye in the house. also amber glenn did incredible at skam, if you're into her. also faves rinka watanabe at sci and loena hendrickx at angers to round out the gpf lineup. (uhhhh. minus isabeau who is talented but i don't care for as a skater atm)
MEN
oh god
shoma uno's nhk free and exhibition: this tiny man owns my entire ass. i also saw both of these skates live and my brain turned to mush and i made noises no human should ever make but i think the nhk ones are better. his short also fucks but he keeps screwing it up lmao. these are some of my favorite programs of all time tbh
roman sadovsky's nebelhorn trophy short: romsky is my goated flop worstie parasocial boyfriend and this program fucks. what if he could ever pull off a free skate.
adam siao him fa's short program from angers: i mean. my god. he did that
kao miura's short program from skam: had no expectations from this kid and then he comes out and drops a 94 point sp in front of us. TWO WEEKS IN A ROW. IN FRONT OF MY EYES. this program is fucking incredible except for the slowest cannonball spin of all time. his beauty and the beast free is also sooo fun but it WILL get stuck in your head and he keeps having bad falls on the first jump
kazuki tomono's miyavi ex: king of gala skates strikes again. pleaaaase learn how to jump for the actual competitions
deniss vasiljevs's sheffield free and sci ex: does the free hit as well without knowing how hard he flopped it during sci? idk and idc. his englishman in new york sp is also worth a watch. we love u deniss. anyway the sci ex happened in front of me and stopped my brain function for like half an hour
junhwan cha's nhk free and skam short: the second we saw jun skate in person we dedicated our lives to seeing him skate again. please know that a good portion of that intensely high pitched screaming from skam is me and kim and lee anne. it was his BIRTHDAY
keegan messing's free at sci: now, this one is simply for the vibes. it was his last ever skate canada and the vibes during this event were terrible. everyone was flopping. energy was low. then keegs saved us and we all stomped and yelled and cried
kevin aymoz's short in espoo: he is sooooooo good and soooooo fun. his free is also good and hilarious bc it's a song of achilles program set to gladiator. i'm not kidding
ilia malinin's free at skam: so, listen. i am not an ilia girlie but he DID land a 4a 15 feet from us and it WAS impressive and i did scream about it, and since he is shoma's main competition at the gpf this year i feel that i should link this
unfortunately i only really care about 2 of the men in the gpf this year and the rest of my faves flopped bad enough at least once to keep them out of the running.
anyway yeah if anyone else wants to watch some figure skating. watch these ones

would shoma qualify for the gpf if he got second or third at nhk? shoma is my favourite and I'd love for him to win it all, but I really like jun as well and since he's competing at nhk and "only" got third at skam I'm worried he won't qualify if he doesn't win nhk... I'm a little torn I guess lol
Shoma would qualify with a 2nd or 3rd place for sure. It could even be 4th depending on how the rest of the competitions go. Shoma won 15 points for Skate Canada, could earn 15, 13 or 11 points for the medal places. 26+ points should easily be enough to qualify.
Junhwan Cha could make it with a win and a 2nd place should qualify him as well. He would have 11 points from Skate America and 15 or 13 points from NHK. 26 or 24 points were normally enough in the last years. It would also be possible that two 3rd places would bring you to the final but it depends how much points other skaters gain and if you're tied with someone else the better placement and score matter.
If Shoma and Juhnwan compete to their best abilities, Shoma has clear advantages on difficulty, which would make him a clear winner, BUT anything is possible in men skating...Shoma's win at Skate Canada wasn't as clear as you could have expected looking at the scoring potential of Shoma.
I would love to have Junhwan and Shoma at the GPF! So good luck to them both! ❤️

Let's assume everyone has a great skate in the World Championships, do the Italians have a chance at the World Title or is it coming down to a Chock/Bates vs Gilles/Poirier duel? (Additionally, does Canada have to tactically tank Fournier-Beaudry/Sorensen to boost G/P?)
Q #202:
Hi anon,
Good question, I’ve gotten a few asks on this. With the officiating panel just released, I think it’s increasingly likely that Gadbois lands two teams on the podium, and kicks G/F out of podium contention. The top 4 seems to be essentially locked barring mistakes with C/B, G/P, G/F, and FB/S. Given Molina and Higashino in those TC and TS spots with their respective relationships to Marie France, I would be shocked if G/F were given the technical merit above other teams to give them a big enough gap to absorb their general deficit in PCS. G/F while coming off a euros win are at a disadvantage to C/B and FB/S who come off of very recent 4CC placements.
Obviously, there’s a bit more uncertainty with FB/S given Laurence’s knee injury, and G/F have probably been the most consistent skaters of the bunch this entire season. G/P are really suffering from peaking early and losing momentum, kind of similar to what happened with W/P in 2014-15 and 2015-16 where they just stalled in the back half of the season. In many ways, G/P so solidly winning GPF while C/B had an incredibly shaky GP season resulted in USFSA throwing even more weight behind them as a panic reaction to them losing to FB/S at NHK and their almost (should have) loss to H/B at SkAm. In combination with the timing of Piper’s appendectomy surgery… I think it will be very hard for them to make it close for 1-2 given the rather absurd score C/B received at 4CC. Honestly, while Canada has very much backed G/P over FB/S, I doubt that weight is going to seriously factor into that 1-2 decision given how much more coaches matter in ice dance. Hope this answers your question!
