looking at the feasibility of going to worlds... why is everything so expensive 😭
#air canada you seriously want $300 for no seat choice no checked bag weekday tickets? that i am buying 4 months in advance?#at least montreal accommodation is cheaper than boston and it has real transit so i wouldn't need to pay for ubers everywhere#but then counter that with a single session ticket for worlds being almost as much as i paid for all event ticket to skam last year#jury's out for now i will need to wait and see if i get a raise#figure skating

Useless Idea - Demo Tape from 1999
From my archive of cassette demos, a track from 1999, the tune must have been done with a Casio, I don't remember the model. Imperfect music, that will never be released on record, imperfect but full of memories and passion, maybe I will share other naive tracks. Enjoy

i do plan on watching skam (og) at some point, and i already know i am glad i didn’t watch it before now. i just know that it would have altered my brain chemistry so hard at fifteen. lol.
#skam#skam norway#plus also not being able to find it in canada would have me loose so much interest in it.#but i do know a lot of shit because of me googling it#and because i used to see gifsets of noora a bit.

It's wild that the whole global trend of gay-focused happy ending romance shows and movies has only been going on for *looks at calendar* a measly ten years!
Just ten years ago. 2014. That's when you get the discovery of a market for queer romance series and films with happy endings. That year the OG Love Sick in Thailand came out. Brazil puts out The Way He Looks, which deserves so much more credit than it receives for influencing the aeshtetics of the genre. Looking premieres on HBO, and despite low ratings, it's an important touchstone. South Korea has the darker Night Flight. And, despite Nickelodeon’s censorship and shifting the program from tv to its website, the Legend of Korra confirms Korrasami in its season finale.
The next year, in 2015, we get Love Sick season 2, and China, pre-censorship laws has a few options: Happy Together (not the Wong Kar Wai one lol), Mr. X and I, and Falling In Love with a Rival. Canada, premieres Schitt's Creek. In the US, Steven Universe reveals Garnet as a romantic fusion between two female characters, and will proceed to just be so sapphic. Norwegian web series Skam premieres and sets up a gay protagonist for its third season, which will drop in 2016 and entirely change the global media landscape.
Then, 2016! This is the MOMENT. That aforementioned Skam season happens. Japan puts out the film version of Ossan's Love and anime series Yuri!!! on Ice. China has the impactful Addicted Heroine, which directly leads to increased censorship. The US has Moonlight come out and take home the Oscar. In Thailand, GMMTV enters the BL game and Thai BL explodes: Puppy Honey, SOTUS, Water Boyy, Make It Right, plus, the Thai Gay OK Bangkok, which, like its influence, Looking, is more in the queer tradition but introduces two dramatically important directors to the Thai BL industry, Aof and Jojo.
By 2017, Taiwan enters the game with its History series. Korea’s BL industry actually kicks off with Method and Long Time No See. Thailand’s got too many BLs to mention. Call Me By Your Name, though not a happy ending, makes a big splash that will send ripples through the whole genre, and God's Own Country offers a gruff counter-argument to problematic age differences and twink obsessions. This is also the year of Netflix reboot of One Day At a Time bringing some wlw to the screen, and the Disney Channel has a main character come out as ‘gay’ on Andi Mack ( I’m am ready to throw fists with anyone who thinks the Disney Channel aesthetic isn’t a part of current queer culture). And I'd be remiss not to mention the influential cult-following of chaotic web-series The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo: "Sometimes things that are expensive...are worse."
All this happened, and we hadn’t even gotten to Love, Simon, Elite, or ITSAY, yet.
Prior to all this there are some major precursors some of which signaled and primed a receptive market, others influenced the people who'd go on to create the QLs. Most significantly you have Glee, and its ending really makes way for the new era that can center gay young people in a world where queerness, due to easy access to digital information, is less novel to the characters. And the QL book and graphic novel landscape was way ahead of the television and film industries, directly creating many of the stories that the latter industries used.
There's plenty of the traditional queer media content (tragic melodramas and independent camp comedies) going on prior to and alongside QL, and there are some outlying queer romance films with happy endings that precede the era but feel very much akin to QL genre tropes and goals (Saving Face, The Wedding Banquet, Big Eden, Maurice, My Beautiful Launderette, and Weekend). I don't mean to suggest that everything I’ve listed ought to be categorized as QL.
Rather, I want to point out how all of these new-era queer romance works are in a big queer global conversation together, in the creation of a new contemporary genre, a genre that has more capacity and thematic interest to include digital technology and normalize cross-cultural relationships than other genres (there's a reason fansubs and web platforms are so easily accepted and integrated to the proliferation genre).
You're not too late to be part of the conversation. Imagine being alive in the 1960s and 70s and participating in the blossoming of the sci-fi genre. That flowering is where gay romance sits now. Join the party.
#just constantly gob-smacked to be alive right now#i know there's plenty of reason to be horrifically distressed about the condition of the world#queer history#thai bl#japanese bl#korean bl#chinese bl#skam

My delulu coping rn is that USFS doesn’t know whether Bratti/Somerville are going to be ready in time for Canada, and if they pull out Bella/Vanya get that spot, so the mid MIDA team would then get the host spot. If B/V don’t get Budapest I’m hoping it’s because they’re going to Skam (since Skam is the next weekend), but if they do get Budapest, I wonder if that’s confirmation they go to Canada in place of Bratti/Somerville. Idk this whole thing is stupid. They won the head to head, so they should get the host spot.
the Flores/Desyatov fandom right now
But in all seriousness, I know I'm still new to this sport but I can't believe how complicated it is to even compete as an ice dancer. You would think that considering their scores they'd get assignments right away for at least a challenger 😑
The most upsetting thing is that Bella and Vanya have earned that host spot by now. They're the best of the middle pack of ice dancers in the US!
USFS, just send them somewhere and let them do their thing! Let them show how hard they've worked, how fantastic they are.
#just bc i opened with a meme doesn't mean im not serious about it btw#diffusing tension with comedy is just kinda my thing i grew up watching sitcoms#asks#flores/desyatov#isabella flores#ivan desyatov#ice dance#us figure skating#usfs

Next up: Parallel Pieces of You and Me, written by Jules, with art from maxence4ever. An AU set in British Columbia, and a mountain setting, yes please!
Jules what inspired your story: Spider-Man into the Spiderverse meets all my SKAM faves, basically! I pictured them all older, in their early twenties, first in a kind of in limbo and then in British Columbia, Canada at a snowed-in resort.
katmylittlesunshine what inspired your art: parallel love universe, connexion and magical story

Not to rain on anybody's parade but looking at the results... The women's podium, C/B losing to the Brits, Ilia losing the free skate...
Homescoring was reasonable and really everyone's memory is selective because SkAm isn't the worst GP in terms of scoring usually...
NOW Skate Canada, that's where the real fun of homescoring works
#figure skating#really skate canada is so much more blatant and for what?#besides ice dance and 1 pair the canadian fed stay flopping#look at g/p's scores#the women sp in 2022 most clown scoring of the quad

back on my fs bullshit <|:D
finally caught up with the skate canada men's sp and I'm gonna give some Thoughts bc it is once more figure skating season and I am so very normal about this sport
(apologies to my non-fs moots, this will keep happening)
I've never seen Aleksa Rakic skate before but I thoroughly enjoyed that! very graceful and musical, I'm curious to check out more of his performances actually
Romsky... that was rough :( it's not my favourite program of his but ouch, praying for the free to go better
Luc!!! that was so fun!!! one of the frenchiest programs to ever french. he sold it so well, I LOVE that music choice for him! I'm excited to see this more over the season
Jason's costume was.. A Choice.. but the program was lovely as per usual :) shame about the fall but honestly I'm past caring about his tech scores, I'm a sucker for a Jason Brown program and they bring me so much joy! he Gets It
I enjoyed the second half of Gabriele's program! step sequence was quite nice, I'm not super convinced Benoit's choreo works for him but hey ho, I still liked a lot of elements of it. the costume on the other hand.... I am on my knees begging for even the tiniest bit of pizzazz
JUN CLEAN!!!!!! oh this was SO FUN, imagine dragons is a perfect choice and he absolutely delivered!!!!! I loved this sm, it was CRISP, it was SASSY, it was CONVINCING, just yes!!! had some very nice choreo details, spins were gorgeous and I loved the little heel flick in the camel (I've taken to calling it a Selevko lol). my man was ROBBED by the judges and I'm incredibly salty about that, pcs was criminally low. sigh.
Sota Yamamoto GODDAMN that was good, mans ATE!! first jump had me fistbumping, the technicality was very nice to watch and the artistry + choreo were pretty convincing too! very solid, I enjoyed that a lot
Shun Sato - oh yessssss that was everything, the grace, the fluidity, the power... I know this is maybe an unpopular opinion but personally I quite enjoyed ladies in lavender for him, I think it worked very well as a musical choice. I'm a little lost for words tbh but I LOVED this program, it sold me completely, i was whsiper-yelling 'YES' at my screen!! excited to see this progress over the season. (also props to Shun for having the least boring/questionable costume in this group)
okay look, I have to confess.... I have officially become an ilia fan. his artistic delivery has improved SO MUCH, I found this a really enjoyable program and not just because of the jumps! I'm glad he's embracing his own style, he seemed to connect with the music really well in a way that made for a convincing artistic narrative, I LOVED the way he played with ebb and flow of the piece, and the little pauses worked very nicely. and like, you have to admit, the jumps ARE insane, mans has fully just mastered the art of flying I think
yes he was very overscored, and yes I'm mad about that (like come on, he would have won even without the inflated pcs, literally what was the point); but I can't help but enjoy each of his performances more and more. and the Ina Bauer at the end was SO DELICIOUS!! I love that he's embracing more musicality and very intrigued to see where he'll go in the future!
overall quite a nice comp! men were menning and the ice was definitely a little cursed, but that's just another day in men's fs I suppose. I think this will be a very interesting season! (but please for the love of this sport can we start having some more interesting costumes)
(also side note I haven't caught up with SkAm yet but apparently Kevin Aymoz slayed big time and almost bet ilia??? I will be watching the MOMENT I have some free time bc holy shit)
#I love it when fs takes over my personality for half a year#ahhhhh it feels good to be back#cursing at the judges and yelling at my laptop. perfection.#figure skating#gpfs 24#<- my grand prix tag for this year (feel free to mute as there will likely be a fair amount of spam)
