The Last Bookstore is one of those places that I want to visit...but honestly I might have to make a trip to SoCal -=just=- for that. (I have acquaintances in SoCal, but no friends. I'm also not a fan of amusement parks, having worked in one for five years while in HS/college.)

Honestly, it’s a cool bookstore and it’s got some neat design, but I don’t know that I’d plan an entire visit around it, unless you’re pretty close to SoCal anyway. It was fun to wander around in, but it’s about an hour’s worth of fun and then you’ve pretty much seen everything. On the other hand, the area around it is pretty cool too -- the historic Pueblo of Los Angeles is nearby, which has a small museum and some nice outdoor spaces.  The LA area does have more to offer than Disney! It’s just often kind of spread out.

If you stick with a navel and very, very carefully separate the sections so that none of them are torn open, they will roast into little puffy pillows filled with an orange jelly-like substance. This will not work with a clementine or a mandarin and probably not with a tangelo. And not everyone is into hot orange jelly.

Is that the Japanese-American internment camp? I read a really interesting novel that mentioned it, focus was more on Japanese-Canadian camp. I didn't realize the camp was memorialized.

Yes -- the camp isn’t exactly “preserved” in that the barracks buildings are almost all gone and the empty spaces are pretty overgrown, but there’s a road around the camp so you can drive through it, and there are placards every so often where you can get out and look at things. Several of the “gardens” (mostly decorative ponds and some landscape features) are preserved but not operational; they also keep up the baseball field, basketball court, and a couple of buildings. It’s quite a haunting site, and they’ve done very well at trying to put you into the shoes of the people imprisoned there. 

Because I went to high school in California we had a lot of internment history in school -- I think I read the novel you may have read, was it Obasan? But if you’re interested in Manzanar, there’s a compelling memoir called Farewell To Manzanar, written by a woman who was seven when she and her family were imprisoned following Pearl Harbor.

You are getting some California weather at its most typical- an oddly warm Thanksgiving!

It was really amazing -- even when we were up in the mountains the only time I needed to wear layers was at Mammoth Lake on Wednesday night. The entire rest of the time my leather jacket or a wool sweater were almost too warm. I hiked the sequoias in a t-shirt and wished I’d worn shorts.

I grew up in the high desert! Enjoy the Joshua Trees!

I SO ENJOYED THEM. We took a shortcut from 395 that involved cutting through the southern end of Sequoia national park, and right at the start of it we found ourselves in this MASSIVE forest of Joshua Trees, it was pretty spectacular. (178 west from 395 to Bakersfield, but DO NOT take 155 from 178, it’s the windingest winding road ever).

Your OPSEC is Bad and You Should Feel Bad

Okay so one of the many things that drives me absolutely nuts about most TV shows and (some) books that involve secret or classified information or secure facilities is how absolutely not secure everything is, so these are a few basic things that people get wrong:

You can't carry around classified information. There are, I assume, exceptions in specific cases, though they are assuredly very carefully managed, but random intel agent #12 cannot legally just take home classified information so they can work on it at home. That's incredibly illegal. And that's for a reason--secure facilities are, as the name suggests, secure. Everywhere else is varying levels of not secure. Even for people working with regular business or government materials on their work phone or laptop, there are varying levels of strict rules about where you can leave it, how to report a lost device, and not keeping it in checked bags.

Badges should be innocuous and limited in visible information. Any sensible security system doesn't have badges that are numbered/colored/otherwise identified by access level, because that is a really easy way to identify targets for thieves/people who want to break in. American federal ID cards (CAC for military, PIV for civilian) have really specific layouts. Some companies distinguish between full time employees, interns, vendors, etc in their cards.

Badges shouldn't be displayed outside of the office. This is not really followed by real people (if you get on the metro on DC you will see a wide variety of visible badges), but displaying a badge is not security-wise because 1) it makes them easier to steal, and 2) it can make you a target.

Names/access level/information shouldn't be openly announced. I'm looking at you, MCU Spider-Man fanfiction. Just. Don't.

Confidential/classified information shouldn't be openly discussed. Stop having your characters talk about confidential or classified information in front of people who shouldn't know it, or even just out in the open at all. They shouldn't be telling their parents, their friends, their spouses, etc. Even businesses or government buildings that deal with sensitive information, there may be spaces where certain things can or can't be discussed, and employees/contractors will go through approximately 8 million trainings on where you can't discuss certain information. This also involves erasing whiteboards, locking computers, etc.

You can't have cell phones in certain secure facilities. People shouldn't be having their cell phones with them in SCIFs. This prohibition extends to all things that can be recording devices, including furbies.

dude ace attorney is GLORIOUS. the first game came out in 2001 so the graphics are a bit gritty but the games are fanTAStic and the plot twists give u whiplash and the characters are very well written and the friendships are very beautiful and wholesome and its so rare to see media pull off friendship dynamics as well as ace attorney does. if u ever get an opportunity, definitely it a go!

Yeah I’ve spent the better part of the past week on a deep dive of TV Tropes and various tumblr blogs with ace attorney tags, and i’m 40 pages deep in the narumitsu tag on ao3. It’s Hollow Knight all over again, except now there’s a ship in the mix too.

Incidentally it was Game Grumps that kicked this off for me, but since they’re only partway through Turnabout Goodbyes and I’m an impatient little bitch I’m switching to Press Buttons ‘n’ Talk because they’ve at least done the first 3 games and ProZD is cool.

when i started TLWA i somehow ignored the Major character death tag, completely forgetting abt it till abt 27 chapters later. on an unrelated note, id been kind of out of the bnha fandom lately and ur fic reminded me of how much love i have for all might and how i think he isnt appreciated nearly as much as he should be in the fandom. im on the last chapter and all might just called izuku in the middle of the night and im kind of having a mental breakdown as shit's clicking into place in my head

mental breakdowns aside, can i just say? i love ur writing style so much and ur characterizations are so on point sometimes i had to re read parts bc i got too distracted being impressed by how u wrote the characters😅. heck, i usually avoid reading fics with too many ocs but i fell in love with every single one of yours. and the thing, beyond all of this, that i appreciated the most? its a GEN fic. bro we need more of those and ur out here delivering it on a silver platter. i love u man.❤ 

asdfghjkl;’ thank you!!!! lmao you have no idea how many reviews I’ve gotten saying they missed the Main Character Death tag, when you think about it, how many people DO read the entirety of AO3 tags? I loved All Might but I think the highlight for me was writing Yagi Toshinori and how it’s HIS legacy that Izuku is carrying on in the end. I’m so glad you liked it, you never know how fics are going to perceived once they’re published but it’s always a treat knowing other people enjoyed reading it. OCs were kinda necessary since Izuku started in a whole other classroom but it was a huge relief most people liked them.
