Obito's reading list
Tumblr media
[if this post is about Obito's taste in literature then why is he asleep, and it's Kakashi doing the reading, you might ask? Well, i believe Obito's reading habits are healthy, while our boy Kakashi here can't simply put his smut down in the dead of night. Also, Obito might be woken up soon by... y'know]
Anyway, i was typing a reply to @hairybeardtongue 's idea about what books Obito would enjoy reading and got inspired ٩(。•́‿•̀。)۶ (my personal post-war Obito headcanons below the cut)
Tumblr media
Definitely! I can see Tobito going a full-blown Machiavelli mode. He must've read it in his villain era (that would explain some of his evil-but-proficient management choices).
But if we speak post-war, Obito will have to find his place again in the ninja world (which is still a mess despite Kakashi's impeccable hokageing). He'll need to catch up on all those years of denying the reality, break the delusions and prejudice he's been fostering all his adult life. I like to believe that he'll find solace in the written word and try to challenge the existing dogma. He might've lost his chakra privilege, but his mind is as sharp as ever, so why not have Kakashi deliver all the books and scrolls he requires to figure out the world he chose to save. In one of my post-war obkk aus Obito becomes a philosopher and provides valuable theoretical basis for Kakashi's and Naruto's executive hokage decisions. What if the guy who almost destroyed it all found a way to end the war-is-all-you-need dictatorship peacefully? (that would make more sense than brutally killing him for the second time, Kishi!)
As for leisure reading ("Pleasure reading!" Kakashi, please don't interrupt), I believe Obito'd enjoy stories about a wanderer who is always on the move and contemplates the world in all its beauty and messiness. (i'm thinking about Mushishi somehow xD) If the Sage of Six Paths published an autobiography, Obito would want to read it too probably. He might even enjoy Jiraya's Tale of the Utterly Gutsy Shinobi! Can you imagine how happy Kakashi'd be to learn that Obito finally decided to read his favorite author?! (he is this close to making him read the Icha-Icha series, who knows, maybe one day...)
Another curious aspect is Obito's seal-free heart, from now on vulnerable and open to compassion and strong emotions. Would that prompt him to read tragic novels to experience the catharsis of vicariously reliving grief, sadness, desperation, or hope? I think he might ("Return of the Crybaby!" dude, please). And whenever he's overwhelmed with his ideas destined to fix the society or sheds too many tears over some dramatic fiction, there's always Kakashi to lean on and rest while those nimble fingers massage his head so very soothingly.

One thing i always liked about naruto was the amount of eye symbolism the series uses.
The sharingan being described as "eyes that reflect the heart" as it gets stronger from the lose of a person's loved ones.
The byakugan in a way were "eyes that reflect the truth" with both neji and hinata wanting see beyond their own respective fates.
The rinnegan are the "eyes of the sage of six path", and they were used by obito, madara and nagato, all characters who were wronged by the shinobi world and had the ambition of wanting to change it even if their methods caused destruction.
Gaara saying sasuke's eyes were filled with hatred and loneliness similar to his own, and even later seeing so much of his past self in sasuke that he emphasize with him.
Haku saying kimimaro's eyes were the same as his before he met zabuza, as they both needed to validate their existence even if meant becoming a human weapon to those who gave them a purpose, the only difference is haku found someone similar to him, who cared for him even if he did not show it, while kimimaro didn't.
It's very simple but still interesting symbolism.

about to blow that madara-tobi freak out of the water 🧨
📃🏙️📄
as is becoming a habit, more details under cut :)
take a look at this bustling city we can be proud to call our own! in the embrace of waters deep six hundred billion seeds i have sown (all ready to bloom. aren't they pretty?) now comes a time for you to reap (every piece is a piece of me)
the paper collage part was made from a single newspaper in a fit of inspiration
the vaguely heart-like shape in the middle was a pain to make natural while keeping the wings as i wanted them.
i wanted to include a faint rainbow, or rather several color-tinted arches of exploding tags in the reflection. it didn't want to work with the composition.
most of the papers in her wings aren't distorted by the water. wonder what that means
deep dark... deep dark... alluring light at the very bottom...
now to the poem:
amegakure is suspiciously modern. best place to live! except for the war and rain and heavy industry and vaguely threatening leader with a god complex.
if this was the closing verse of something longer, the opening verse would be this: we were made out of stainless steel where others were left out to corrode only the strongest welcome the rain over a pit stop on war road
kishimoto has no idea how numbers work. i usually play with the timeline & ages to get something that makes sense at the moment (even thinking about team minato ages hurts). however 600,000,000,000 is an insane number i'm keeping.
(can't find the original post that first mentioned this but i've already incorporated it into my konan lore:) konan has a plan to take down any member of the akatsuki. very batman-like of her. except every plan involves an incredible number of exploding tags. "konan is the only sane one in the akatsuki"? she is sitting in their meetings while silently making exploding tags somewhere else. every time she lays her eyes on hidan or deidara or madara-tobi she ups the rate of production. i'm scared of big numbers because they overflow on accident or you have to think about what special type to give them & when you mess up an algorithm complexity they want to compute way over the heat death of several universes... (amateur c programmer with math background spotted) (btw in c it's long long int, 64 bits)
konan & flowers! i mean it's literally part of her design so why not indulge when she has created a literal minefield (except the whole field is made of bombs)
madara-tobi goes boom! poor obito finds field imagery around him (hatake, nohara). seems to be a normal japanese thing, but psst, let me enjoy this. mr fan-the-flame is drowned in fire
every piece is a piece of her. first of all, literally. don't tell me she sat down (cloned of course) and did calligraphy on regular paper by hand, and/or ruined the whole economy just for this. talk about putting your heart into something... second, she uses paper butterflies for spying. as in, she turns into hundreds or thousands of pieces (ch371; jiraiya assumes he's arriving in ame suuuper stealthily), all of them presumably directed by one consciousness. solid clones have copies of the original mind, and shadow clones can return memories only when they dispell. i can't imagine all the butterflies with a mind of their own and konan casually integrating such a number when she reforms. if that is the case, she is truly on another level. sidenote: nagato's paths of pain share line of vision. he's literally operating 6+1 bodies at once. you know what? i bow to that. let him enjoy his godhood!
Tumblr media
in conclusion: she had the audacity & the 600,000,000,000 plan almost worked! my top 3 female character in naruto

tbh i think the thing with pain wasnt nearly so thematically deep and we'd be giving kishimoto a lot of grace by assuming so 😔 i felt the ending was a pretty straightforward reactionary interpretation of what was acceptable anti imperialist/"pacifist" action coming from a mega typical 2nd baby boom mangaka who talked to his grandparents abt ww2 and came out saying "war is that bad because of lingering grudges" in interviews. that's not to mention i dont exactly expect deliberate thematic density or even understanding of his own allegories from a guy who outright said he hadn't decided on who itachi even was until volume 16 was released. i just feel like the easiest way to interpret the narrative trajectory is through remembering 1. if kishimoto read any fanon his head would immediately implode into dust 2. his introduction of jiraiya/neocon talking points directly coincided with the anti-japanese protests across east asia in the early 2000s
actually maybe i do think kishimoto is conscious that he's written a fascist military-industrial complex. i think he's super duper aware on some level lmao

You know, I didn't dislike the Kaguya battle as much as I thought that I might. I'd probably have different, more interesting feelings on this if I'd been reading "Naruto" properly instead of skipping over a bunch of stuff in the middle, but I'd already been spoiled on her as a villain and expected her appearance. And also the story has dropped so many threads and fumbled the landing of so many character arcs by this point that the vibes were kind of like, "Sure, this might as well happen next."
My favorite parts of that excruciatingly long final battle were anytime the fight involved ugly, complicated personal histories between characters. So, I liked "Hashirama versus Madara" and "Tobirama versus Madara". (I initially went looking for the "Senju versus Uchiha" flashback chapters (622ish; 619-ish is where Orochimaru resurrects the previous Hokages) and kept on reading from there out of curiosity.) And I also really liked the "Kakashi versus Obito" moments and "Minato (+ Naruto + Tobirama) versus Obito".
Thinking about it now, it seems really weird that there wasn't a bigger emotional confrontation between Sasuke and Madara, or else one between Sasuke and Obito. Sasuke seemed kind of checked out for most of the battle until it was time to him to fight Naruto after Kaguya was defeated. I guess he's just done with most of this shit after Itachi died. But Madara and Obito are partially responsible for a lot of the tragedy in Sasuke's life? I guess yelling at the villains for being shitty people and shitty family is already Naruto's job...
There's a lot about Kaguya that I actually think is kind of cool. She's pretty scary. I think the lore is pretty neat, actually. And even though she has basically zero personal connection to any of our heroes (Sasunaru being reincarnations of her descendants do not count as "personal" connections in my eyes), the Kaguya battle FINALLY cut the cast down to a far more reasonable number of people so that the story stopped being split in half-a-dozen different directions.
It's just Team 7 plus Obito! We're down to like 6-8 characters (depending on whether or not you count Zetsu, and also the Sage of the Six Paths, I guess). Nicely focused! I liked seeing Team 7 reunited and struggling forward together to save the world all on their own. I thought that this narrowed focus helped the pacing a lot, especially because the fight with her specifically didn't actually drag on for very long, and so I found it surprisingly easy to get through her part of the super long final battle compared to some of the earlier waffling back and forth between Madara and Obito and Zetsu.

What canon says about Indra Ōtsutsuki
Indra Ōtsutsuki is the inventor of ninjutsu and the first human to bear the Sharingan, making him the ancestor of the Uchiha Clan.
He has just three appearances in the entire manga, all of which are from secondhand sources.
1. Our most direct source on Indra is his father Hagoromo, the Sage of Six Paths, in chapters 670-671:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hagoromo goes on to talk about the beginnings of his sons’ reincarnation cycle:
Tumblr media
As well as the prior generation of incarnates:
Tumblr media
He also makes one intriguing mention of how Indra anticipated the reappearance of the Rinnegan, which requires Indra and Ashura’s chakra to fuse together in one vessel:
Tumblr media
Since we have no corroborating testimony elsewhere, assessing the accuracy of Hagoromo’s story requires us to examine it for bias.
It is worth mentioning that Indra shares the Sharingan with his grandmother Kaguya, who was sealed away by Hagoromo and his brother. This likely had a negative effect on Hagoromo’s view of his son, as he seems to distrust the Sharingan’s power:
Tumblr media
Hagoromo connects his mother and his son in other aspects, as shown in the panels below where Hagoromo describes his own views on power compared to Kaguya's. His description of Kaguya’s hunger for power resembles his earlier description of what he claims are Indra’s views.
Tumblr media
If you need further proof that Hagoromo negatively equates his mother and his son, despite the two never having met, look no further than the panel below:
Tumblr media
In short, Hagoromo says the world of the Fourth Shinobi World War is Indra’s (and Kaguya’s) world. Hagoromo blames his son, and his son’s refusal to accept Ashura, for the current war. This seems a curious thing to assert, since Hagoromo never states outright that Indra killed or even harmed anyone, despite the panel of Indra in armor. He only says that, “Indra turned upon Ashura.”
Tumblr media
One final note on the Sage’s story. In a great irony, at some point the historical record credited Hagoromo with the creation of ninjutsu, instead of Indra himself:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once more, Hagoromo outright equates his son with war, and accuses his son of being a warmonger.
We have to question Hagoromo’s knowledge of his son’s internal motivations, especially since we have no evidence except Hagoromo‘s own testimony. Inventions can be used outside of their inventor’s intended purpose. Ninjutsu being used in war does not automatically mean it was made to create war. Was this really what Indra intended, or is this Hagoromo‘s own assumption after the fact?
2. Black Zetsu also knew Indra firsthand, and briefly mentions him in chapter 682.
Despite being an enemy, Black Zetsu can be considered a fairly reliable source. He recounts his story to Naruto and Sasuke while Kaguya is draining their chakra. With the two already immobilized and helpless, there’s no need for manipulation. Zetsu gains nothing by lying to them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crucially, Hagoromo’s story never once mentions Black Zetsu. Hagoromo appears to know nothing about Zetsu’s influence on Indra and Indra’s descendants. Hagoromo claims to have precognition and the ability to read signs (670) and also claims to have watched his children fight throughout history (671), but Zetsu gives us direct evidence that Hagoromo’s omniscience is fallible, and his story is far less authoritative than it seemed on the surface.
Hagoromo is missing important pieces of the narrative, though he is not aware of it. His ignorance calls his testimony about Indra’s nature, Indra’s motivations, and the true sequence of events further into question.
3. Our last source is Obito, who tells a mythologized version of Indra’s story in chapter 462.
This version has the most questionable accuracy. Rather than direct testimony by someone who knew Indra, it’s a story passed down over generations.
Another complicating factor is the context in which this story is told. Obito (pretending to be Madara) tells the story to Naruto and Kakashi with the aim of convincing Naruto that Sasuke’s desire for revenge is genuine. Obito is lying about his identity; it is possible that Obito is further altering the story to manipulate his listeners.
Tumblr media
Hagoromo made no mention of any curse in his story. Did he just leave it out? Is this a misinterpretation of Hagoromo’s belief that power drives people mad? Or did later generations invent the idea of a curse?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obito, in his Madara persona, claims his battle with Hashirama was destined and that Naruto and Sasuke are equally destined to be enemies. Obito’s intent to influence Naruto makes the way he also casts Indra and Ashura as implacable enemies somewhat suspect. But that doesn’t mean Obito’s version is a complete lie; there’s probably a grain of truth in the basic events.
One question worth asking: who does the seed of this myth belong to? Is it from Konoha? The Uchiha?
Consider instead: who is famous for calling the Uchiha a cursed clan?
Senju Tobirama. He is the oldest character to call the Uchiha cursed; a manga chapter is even titled after this exact quote from him (619). The way Obito’s story equates the Uchiha with hatred resembles the rumors Tobirama related to Hashirama prior to the Hokage election (625).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This fact, plus the unflattering portrayal of Indra, makes me believe Obito might actually be telling the Senju version of events.
4. What final conclusions can we draw about Indra’s character from these three portrayals?
The narrative insists Indra believed in power and blames him for the current war...but we have little to no corroboration for this. The only crime directly attributed to Indra was from Obito’s mythology version, where he attacked his brother after being passed over for inheritance.
The anime chose to make Indra into an a villainous character, but without much basis. There’s a lot of room for fandom to question, re-interpret, and develop new portrayals.
His invention of ninjutsu, for example, must have been extraordinary for its time, but is consistently cast as a negative achievement. His relationship with his father is another point worth re-examining.
In the end, what do we know?
Indra was born with strong chakra to a father who believed no one person’s chakra should be much greater than any other's. He was hailed as a genius and inherited the power of his grandmother’s eyes, which his father distrusted, but still chose to create his own techniques. Ninjutsu was Indra’s most lasting legacy, but one he never received credit for. He became a ghost in Shinobi history - and also a ghost of the narrative.

*Sasori and Konan waiting at a checkpoint for Deidara and Tobi*
Konan: So … are you excited?
Sasori: Excited? Why would I be excited?
Konan: Because Deidara’s been on this mission for six months, and this is the first time you’ll be seeing him in all that time.
Sasori: Tsk; are you kidding? I’ve been so relieved to be rid of the brat.  My work on my puppets has gone a lot smoother without him around to pester me, and I’ve been relishing the peace and quiet.
Konan: Oh? Well maybe this return isn’t such a good thing, then. You —
*Deidara and Tobi come into view about half a mile down the road, and Tobi spots them and waves*
Konan: Ah, there they are. Perhaps we should walk to go meet them? They —
Konan: *looks; Sasori is gone from her side and flying down the path*
Sasori: *races up to Deidara and throws his arms around him hard, knocking them both into the dirt*
Deidara, startled: D-Danna?!
Sasori: My Deidara, my most precious love … *starts kissing all over Deidara’s face* I missed you so much I could barely stand it. You can’t ever go away for so long again, or if you do, I’M going with you. Okay?
Deidara, tearing up and kissing back: Okay, hm!
Konan, having caught up, to Tobi: Mission went well?
Tobi, low, in Obito voice: Never send me with this guy again. Six long months and every single day I had to listen for HOURS to him wax poetic about the damn puppet.
Konan, also low: So I take it your efforts to seduce him didn’t work — ?
Tobi, pulling off his mask and plopping down on the ground: What the hell do YOU think?!
*Obito starts loudly crying while Sasori and Deidara are now rolling around next to him making out*
*Zetsu suddenly pops up out of the ground*
Zetsu: Konan. Leader said to retrieve you at once. Hidan attempted to make dinner, he gave something with nuts in it to Itachi, Itachi’s face swelled up, and Kisame tore off Hidan’s head and flung it into the tree. We need you to use your paper wings to fly up and get him. *leaves*
Konan:
Konan: I don’t think I’m being paid enough to deal with this …

When they realised they're in love with you:(!fem Reader)
Characters: Sano Shinichiro, Hatake Kakashi, Gojo Satoru.
Warnings: None
Sano Shinichiro:
We all know that he is a hopeless romantic.
And when you finally accepted his ass after the 20 rejections he faced. He was beyond happy.
First few weeks of dating he thought you were only dating him because of some stupid dare your friends gave you. And any moment you would shout "SIKE" to tell him it's all a joke.
Don't blame him though he's been through 20 rejections so he's a bit insecure.
Anyways his imagination never happened and he knew that you're with him cause you want to.
I think Shinichiro would fall in love rather quickly with you during your relationship.
Like it's only been 4 months you having been dating and you were chilling at his shop.
You were watching him work on bike. You loved watching him work. It made him hotter when he was concentrated on something.
You were interrupted by his 3 siblings entering his shop who were arguing among each other.
Both of your attention shifted to them and Shinichiro tried to calm them down but they we're paying heed to any of his words.
That's when you decided to step in and after a few moments all three of them were calm and were paying attention to you.
Shinichiro looked at you with his eyes full of love. He loved the way you interacted with his siblings. Sure you did interact with them previously but this time was different to him.
It amazed him how easily you sorted their argument which is something that Shinichiro fails at quite a decent amount of time.
That was when he knew he was in love with you. And that he will be damned if he ever let you go.
Hatake Kakashi
He has lost many people his his life. And that's why he's very hesitant to let people into his life.
But when you came into his life. He was ready to give life another chance. Another chance to prove itself wrong. Another chance to show him that love really exists.
You were paired with him for a long mission and in that time, he learned everything about you.
With you he felt that he could talk about anything, and he did. He told you about his father, Obito and Rin.
After the mission was over, both of you tried to meet up often instead of your busy schedule.
Then Akatsuki started to carry out their plan and you both became busy protecting your village.
When Pain attacked the village, you both were positioned at different locations to save people.
At some point you couldn't sense his chakra anymore, you wanted to cry, scream, tell him that you love him since the day you met and regretted not telling your true feelings to him.
After Naruto saved the village, you went to look for Kakashi and you saw him sprinting towards you.
"Kakashi-", he cut you off by giving hug.
" Y/n, I was scared, so scared, not because I was dying but because I couldn't tell you how much you mean to me. Before I died, I saw your smiling face and I realized I have loved you all this time."
You let out a sob, "I love you too, Kakashi. Please don't even leave me again."
Gojo Satoru:
Gojo has always liked you since your first year at Jujutsu tech.
You, Shoko, Gojo and Geto were best friends that was until Geto choose a different path.
All of you were devastated by his actions, especially Gojo. He started to spend more and more time alone.
With his best friend gone and Shoko busy with her medical practice, Gojo was left alone.
That's why you decided to step up, you started to spend more time with him, bringing him sweets from his favorite shops and helping him raise Megumi.
Gojo had gone on a long mission, so you went to his apartment to take care of Megumi.
As you were talking with the little boy, you didn't notice the six-eyed sorcerer was back at home.
"But why are you so worried about him? He always says, " I'm the strongest " ", Megumi impersonated Gojo's cocky voice.
You giggled and answered, " He might be the strongest but he's still a person with limits.", you paused for a second then continued, "And I care for him. He might not express it but I know he is all alone now and I want to help him."
"Anyways, why am I even saying this to a kid?", you said and Megumi pouted, " I'm not a kid".
Gojo's heart fluttered at your words, everyone always talked about how special he was how powerful he was but no one ever understood what he goes through everyday. No one but you.
Gojo thinks might be in love afterall.
