In case you're confused about how I feel about the two latest Sisi series, it's something like this:

Netflix Die Kaiserin: awfully historically inaccurate trashy series (derogative)

RTL Sisi: awfully historically inaccurate trashy series (affectionate)

Officially became obsessed with "The Empress" series on Netflix this summer, and I ship Elisabeth/Franz so hard!

So of course, that meant I had to write a little fanfic about them, which I've posted over at AO3:

Sorry if you were asked this question, but which series did you like more - Sisi or The Empress?

I haven't received this question yet...I think? I'm honestly not sure. Both played a lot with the material and basically turned it into fanfiction of what we know happened.

I mean Sisi is also already on its fourth season production cycle while The Empress is only just now wrapping up filming its second season, so comparing them is really difficult when you have three times as many episodes for one series. I think I enjoy Dominique's Sisi a bit more to Devrim's while I like Philip's Franz over Jannik's, but this isn't on the actors but the stories written for them and how they are directed to play them.

But overall I recommend watching Sisi (2009) over both of them.

I've just seen Corsage (2022) and I don't know what to think of the film. Yes, I liked Vicky Kreips' performance, I think she gave us a Sisi with a complex personality, closer to the historical character. My problem is the plot (to be honest, I got quite bored) and the historical context... sometimes I didn't feel I was watching a film set in the 19th century, but in the 21st century (the boat thing killed me lol). I understand that the director wanted to make a more psychological film, but I was expecting to see a bit more of the family tragedies that led Elisabeth to suffer a severe depression in the last years of her life.

PS: I can't believe I've seen FJ and Sisi having s*x in two series and a movie in the same year. I need to know what's so appealing about seeing two first cousins hooking up.

Is there a reason why Netflix shows' productions are so slow? Because it's kind of incredible that RTL Sisi is already shooting its fourth season while we don't even have a sneak peak of the second season of Die Kaiserin that finished shooting months ago. The shows don't even look different visually so I don't think it's a matter of budget difference.

Corsage (dir. Marie Kreutzer) x VIFF 2022.

Kreutzer’s direction and the wonderfully sour performance by Krieps, a treasure who needs to be protected at all costs, breathe new energy into the otherwise typical historical royal biopic formula. However, it still maintains the expected hallmarks of high-level costume, production, and set design to make the tale of an Empress in crisis all the more relatable.

Screened at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Special Presentations program.
