“Cher ami!" Poirot had said to me as I left the room. They were the last words I was ever to hear him say.”
Ten years ago, David Suchet completed his iconic 25 year run as Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot in Curtain: Poirot’s Last Case.
Undoubtedly one of the best actors to portray the literary character and who has a special place in the heart of the Agatha Christie fandom.

@mashumaru I hope you don't mind me answering your question here? There was no way this was fitting in the comments section. 😅 So these are what I'd call more Sunday afternoon murder mysteries then gritty crime dramas, as that's what I'm mainly watching at the mo. But if you'd like some darker recs, just let me know.
Anywho...
Midsomer Murders
The ultimate Sunday afternoon watch. Murder most foul, represented artistically in the form of a cream tea. Starring Inspector Barnaby(s), the most teddy bear men ever to exist. Every episode will include chocolate box village eye porn. Murder weapons have included but are not limited to: a cheese wheel, drowned in chocolate, a headless horseman and a steampunk werewolf. It sounds ridiculous but once you start, you won't be able to stop. I promsie you. The horrors: 0/10, though may leave you with a life long phobia of morris dancers and village fetes.
The Morseverse (Endeavour/Inspector Morse and Lewis)
Ah Morseverse, my beloved. The English academic elite does crime. Oxford is it's own splendorous character, with every episode crammed full of towering libraries, awe inspiring architecture and fanatically manicured, college quads. A must watch for those whose hearts belong to dark academia. Endeavour and Morse are set in the 60s/70s and 80s/90s respectively. And follow the same character, Endeavour Morse, from brilliant, blue eyed, troubled twink to brilliant, blue eyed, grumpy old man with a definite alcohol problem. (Never play drink along with Morse, it's a surefire way to get alcohol poisoning.) The baton is then passed to his sergeant, Robert Lewis in Lewis, set in the relative present (as of this post). The relationship between Inspector and Sergeant is what ultimately makes these series, be it Fred Thursday and Morse, Morse and Lewis and Lewis and James Hathaway. And you'll come to treasure them. Be prepared to leave these series with a well earned fictional degree in classical music. Murders CAN and WILL be based on obscure, literary references. The horrors: Well it depends.... I'd say Endeavour is the darkest, Lewis is the lightest with Morse settled nicely in between. If you finish this series not wanting a Jaguar Mark II, you did it wrong.
Vera
Vera Stanhope, my northumbrian queen, my geordie goddess. A middle aged plus woman, with no makeup (or two f*cks to rubs together) decked in a brown hat and mac and driving the world most beaten up land rover.... Owns everyone. And it is sooo satisfying to watch. The scenic southern eye candy of the two previous recs is replaced with the wild, isolated landscapes of the North, very much reflecting our DI. She's joined by sergeant dark and dishy and the ever more put up Kenny Lockhart, as well as host of others. But what really makes this series is Vera herself. As equally formidable as she is kind hearted, with no hint of glamour. She's the kind of female representation we both need and deserve. The horrors: Vera passive aggressively calling vicious murderers 'pet' fixes all world problems. It's scientifically proven.
Things you may have heard of:
Sherlock Holmes, the Granada edition starring Jeremy Brett. No finer Sherlock has ever graced our screens to this day (And yes, I will stand and fight for that statement.) One of the most loyal adaptations of the books ever made.
Poirot, staring David Suchet. No offence to Kenneth Branagh (Your Henry V got me through high-school English lit sir). But David Suchet is THE Prirot for me. Another loyal book adaptation. Over a 25 year period Suchet lived and breathed Poirot and it shows.
If anyone's got any other recommendations please feel free to add them on. I know I've missed a ton! Anywho, I hope that helps me dear. 😁

A bit of a rant and reflection
First post on this blog that is not about Sherlock.
But I can sense a new hyperfixation kicking in.
My Dad made me watch a few episodes of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot (1989) and now I can only think of Sir David Suchet's unique accent and his distinctive way of walking.
I vaguely remember watching it when I was ten or eleven years old but I could barely understand anything back then.
And here's another thing. I'm sort of realising this while I'm typing this but, 2024 has sort of reinstilled my love for sleuths all over again.
It started with Benoit Blanc, working its way through Sir Kenneth Branagh's portrayal of Hercule Poirot, that crack youtube channel making me fall for Sherlock for a second time in eight years and the most recent one being the Belgian detective, again.
I hope I carry my reignited fascination with detectives and the world of mystery into the new year as well.
Who knows, I may be interested in the Granada Sherlock Holmes next 🤷🏻♀️

So, last night I got a bit of a sour menage (AGAIN), and inspired by @fictionadventurer really enjoying The Warden, I decided to sit down and finish The Barchester Chronicles (a 1980s BBC adaptation of The Warden + Barchester Towers, with Donald and Angela Pleasance, Geraldine McEwan, Alan Rickman, Nigel Hawthorne and Barbara Flynn), and I have to say I did enjoy it! Definitely the Church politics renders an interest and certain comedy to the story that are very welcome.
So, full of naïveté this morning, I thought maybe it was I who had changed taste about Trollope, and that I should try to watch The Way We Live Now (2001), which has one of those star studded casts as well (David Suchet, Matthew MacFayden, Shirley Henderson, Cillian Murphy, Joanna David, Miranda Otto, Douglas Hodge, David Bradley, Jim Carter, Helen Schlesinger). Two episodes in, I have to say I was wrong. Barchester is the exception XD
Also, what is it with Victorian writers and long protracted plotlines about young gamblers in which I'm supposed to get invested? There's Sir Felix here, there's Nikolai Rostov in War and Peace... I would have said "male writers", but then I remembered Gwendolyn from Daniel Deronda (diversity win! Female author writes a young FEMALE gambler plotline!). There's also of course Anne Brontē with The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, but that's a different and much better case because A) she doesn't make thrill scenes of gambling scenes (stale and repetitive as they always are, the gambler always loses, and almost always the opponent is a guy who cheats at cards but who never is suspected, for some reason) B) I can feel for Lord Lowborough because I'm given a sense that the man hates his vice and is actively struggling with it, instead of "uwu, isn't it sad that he can't resist the temptation when a friend invites him, how could he poor sod."
So, anyways, I guess Trollope remains a no for me, except a qualified exception XD
#i never finished the Doctor Thorne miniseries despite how much I love Tom Hollander#but there on top of the dense dull tense plot#there was Fellowes over airbrushed aesthetic that grates on my nerves#no surprises there

Regrading Taskmaster: S04E01 A fat bald white man.
*Score changes noted in parenthesis.
New series alert and I'd say we've finally reached one of the series that most consider a peak of Taskmaster. I've said as much in the post where I ranked the series, but I'm not quite as fond of this series as most. However, Joe Lycett might be one of my favorite contestants of all time . . . so if this regrade ends with him as the winner, you can call me biased.
Prize Task: The most interesting autograph on the most interesting vegetable.
Two possible methods of grading this exist: (1) It can be evaluated by the total completed submission, or (2) The vegetable and autograph can be evaluated separately. The former seems more appropriate because some of the contestants use a theme for their whole submission.
Hugh brings in a forged "Malcolm X" signature on a carrot. He's actively sacking his points for a joke here. Joe had Sara Pascoe trick Greg into signing a yellow courgette and gets marked down because she lied about it being for charity.
Lolly tries a workaround by placing a signed Black Eyed Peas CD on some black eyed peas. Even if this is considered "on the vegetable," it's a very temporary or conditional sort of on. I'm dropping her below Joe because, to quote him: "fuck charity."
Mel had four of the five members of Take That sign different vegetables (I don't think there was any connection as to the specific vegetables, but they were all interesting). While incomplete, she quadrupled the amount of signatures anyone else got (presumably Lolly just bought a pre-signed CD).
Noel had Sir David Suchet sign a broad bean. Impressive signature, but I'm wasn't familiar with him so I'm struggling to see how it can beat Mel's four, no matter how impressive he is.
Hugh: 1 (0) Joe: 3 (+1) Lolly: 2 (-1) Mel: 5 (-1) Noel: 4 (-1)
VT 01: Destroy this cake. Most beautify destruction wins.
No disagreement on the winner here. Joe using fireworks to blow up a cake looks just as good as it sounds. Production even helped him out with slow-mo and a little Hoist.
I cannot figure out how Noel beat Lolly here. Chucking a cake in a washing machine is not more beautiful than what is actually a pretty good heart portrait. I honestly find Hugh's knife-work a little hypnotic and might have put him above Noel had it been a little cleaner.
Sorry Mel.
Hugh: 2 (0) Joe: 5 (0) Lolly: 4 (+1) Mel: 1 (0) Noel: 3 (-1)
VT 02: Create the best caricature of the person on the other side of the curtain. You may not look at the person.
Let's address the Hugh situation. He was looking at the model. Telescopes use mirrors to enlarge things and it is not incorrect to say that you are "looking at that thing through a telescope." Greg gave him one point because his drawing was terrible. He deserved a DQ.
The other thing I just noticed about this task is the word "caricature," so it's supposed to be ridiculous. Noel's is easily the best actual drawing and probably more accurate than Lolly's (despite her adding a properly colored dress). Joes is a better drawing of a human than Lolly's but at first I thought it was a caricature of himself. I'd probably put Lolly ahead for accuracy.
Mel's is really bad. So including the bonus point for getting the name, the scores are:
Hugh: 1 (-1) Joe: 3 (-1) Lolly: 4 (+1) Mel: 3 (0) Noel: 5 (0)
VT 03: Fell all the rubber ducks.
TM has done this task so many times and most people have figured out that the answer is "string." Since it's a matter of time the only question is whether someone breaks the rules. Weirdly, Alex explains they have to stay behind the rope in the studio and it's not read out on the task.
Regardless, no one tries to get around it and there doesn't seem to be any inadvertent crossing (unless you count them leaning over it to throw things).
Hugh: 5 Joe: 3 Lolly: 4 Mel: 1 Noel: 2
Live Task: Make the most juice. You must pick one fruit and one tool. If you pick the same tool as someone else, you must juice blindfolded. If you pick the same fruit as someone else, you must juice one-handed. If you pick the same fruit and tool as someone else, you must juice blindfolded, one-handed and bouncing up and down.
Everyone but Mel needed to juice one-handed and blindfolded. Joe immediately starts off by trying to pick up his bucket with two hands, realizes his mistake and drops it. I think this is mostly forgivable because I'm not even sure if he actually gets the second hand on it.
Less forgivable, Noel and Hugh just ignore the one-handed rule and use both regularly throughout the task.
I cannot fathom why they didn't get disqualified.
Hugh: DQ (-4) Joe: 4 (+1) Lolly: 3 (+2) Mel: 5 (0) Noel: DQ (-2)
Final:
Hugh: 9 (-4) Joe: 18 (+1) Lolly: 17 (+4) Mel: 15 (-1) Noel: 14 (-4)
So already a win to Joe originally achieved by Noel. Sort of hinges on whether or not Joe ought to have been disqualified in the live task. Even if he touched that bucket, I'm pretty confident he never "juiced" with both hands.

Rules: list eight TV shows for your followers to get to know you better!
Tagged by @ruleofexception oh gosh oh boy do I even remember a full eight off the top of my head
1. The Rings of Power. Yeah sue me. Of all the recent adaptations of fantasy series, this is the only one that got its assignment right, which makes it a champion in my eyes already. Also. Hot butter tension.
2. Arcane. I am a sucker for both art nouveau and art deco and guess what, it’s everywhere in this animation. Also high-stakes drama and intense eye contact and beautiful art in general.
3. Hajimete no Otsukai! So wholesome I could die. And just. Look at what a magnificent way to teach children responsibility and kindness and how to approach the world. It even made my mother cry. Haters can fuck off.
4. All of Sir David Attenborough’s Documentaries. I mean all of them yes.
5. Poirot. My favourite crime solver, and a guaranteed comfort watch. But I mean only, and ONLY, David Suchet’s Poirot. The rest are impostors.
6. Nytt på Nytt. (News on news) norwegian news satire show, with sometimes splendidly caustic takes. Comes on every friday to summarize the last week’s news. Much shade is thrown.
7. The Pacific. *loud sobbing noises*. I may be a history nerd, but that doesn’t mean I’m immune to human suffering.
8. Filmavisen. (“Filmpaper”) Not so much a TV show as a collection of old “news bulletins” from the time when Norwegians went to the cinema to watch the news. Greyscale clips presented in Ye Olde Man Talks Eloquently And Very Speedily.
As always, I am tagging whoever wishes to do this and hopes for someone to tag them~ you’re free to say I did, for in spirit, it is true~

Agatha Christie Tumblr Fandom, I’m bored and wanna know your thoughts on the (so far) only Christie approved full body portrait of Hercule Poirot by W. Smithson Broadhead.
It fascinates me since it’s noticeably different compared to Albert Finney’s and David Suchet’s Poirot’s who are considered the closest to Poirot, with Finney being approved by Christie herself and Suchet being the family’s favorite (bar the small moustaches of course.

That's right, sir Suchet: you will always be the one and only Hercule Poirot, the very best. From this moment until forever.
(meanwhile, sir Kenneth Branagh goes to cry in a corner).
Sir David Suchet on which detective he would play other than Poirot → January 12 2024
"People always ask me what is it about my Poirot that is so endurable and memorable. It's nothing to do with me, actually. I lifted the character from Agatha Christie's books and, hopefully, got it right, for Agatha Christie and her millions of fans worldwide. But, for the viewers, I think, he's also a great moral compass. So, when you're watching him, you feel safe, you feel secure, and everything is gonna be alright. And, I think that's a lovely feeling." - David Suchet, Capital Theatres interview
